ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 21, 2020

It’s 1913, and on the surface, Laura Lyons couldn’t ask for more out of life–her husband is the superintendent of the New York Public Library, allowing their family to live in an apartment within the grand building, and they are blessed with two children. But headstrong, passionate Laura wants more, and when she takes a leap of faith and applies to the Columbia Journalism School, her world is cracked wide open. As her studies take her all over the city, she finds herself drawn to Greenwich Village’s new bohemia, where she discovers the Heterodoxy Club–a radical, all-female group in which women are encouraged to loudly share their opinions on suffrage, birth control, and women’s rights. Soon, Laura finds herself questioning her traditional role as wife and mother. But when valuable books are stolen back at the library, threatening the home and institution she loves, she’s forced to confront her shifting priorities head on . . . and may just lose everything in the process.

Eighty years later, in 1993, Sadie Donovan struggles with the legacy of her grandmother, the famous essayist Laura Lyons, especially after she’s wrangled her dream job as a curator at the New York Public Library. But the job quickly becomes a nightmare when rare manuscripts, notes, and books for the exhibit Sadie’s running begin disappearing from the library’s famous Berg Collection. Determined to save both the exhibit and her career, the typically risk-adverse Sadie teams up with a private security expert to uncover the culprit. However, things unexpectedly become personal when the investigation leads Sadie to some unwelcome truths about her own family heritage–truths that shed new light on the biggest tragedy in the library’s history.

REVIEW:THE LIONS ON FIFTH AVENUE by Fiona Davis is a fictional, historical story line focusing on the Lyons family of New York.

Told from dual third person perspectives using two different time lines THE LIONS ON FIFTH AVENUE follows housewife/mother/ and feminist Laura Lyons in 1913-1914 as she struggles with family, friendships and a direction in life. Having always wanted to be a journalist, Laura enrols at the prestigious Columbia Journalism School where she will discover that life as she knows it is about to change. From exposure to the Heterodoxy Club, the thefts of valuable books from the New York Public Library where she and her family lived, to her husband’s death and her son’s disappearance, Laura will have to face the reality that her world was spiralling out of control.

Fast forward to 1993, wherein we will meet Laura Lyons granddaughter, New York City Library curator Sadie Donovan, a woman whose own life will begin to mimic that of her grandmother’s when a series of manuscripts, notes and books go missing from a rare collection at the public library. With the investigation quickly focusing on Sadie Donovan, Sadie begins to research her family history only to discover that the truth is stranger than fiction.

THE LIONS ON FIFTH AVENUE is a slow building story that bounces between two time lines, one family, and a series of missing and stolen books. We are witness to but a few months in the life of both leading heroines yet Sadie has only skimmed the surface of her grandmother’s tale. THE LIONS OF FIFTH is an impassioned, dramatic and tragic story of one family, two women, and the New York Public Library.

REVIEW:A DATE FOR THE DERBY co-authored by Heidi McLaughlin and LP Dover is a contemporary, adult, erotic novella, and the fifth stand alone story in their DATING series. This is horse trainer Colby Hensley, and Heiress Brielle Armstrong’s story line. Like the previous instalments A DATE FOR THE DERBY is a complete stand alone. You do not have to have read any of the other stories to follow along.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Colby and Brielle) A DATE FOR THE DERBY is a second chance romance between horse trainer Colby Hensley, and heiress Brielle Armstrong. Colby Hensley is in love with Brielle Armstrong but a few years earlier, while working and training horse at the Armstrong stables, Colby discovered that his boss and Brielle Armstrong’s father went behind his back on a deal for a horse. Disappointed and furious Colby called out his former employer and in doing so found himself looking for another job. Having walked away from the Armstrong stables meant walking away from the woman he loved but with the approach of the Kentucky Derby, Colby knew he would have to face Brielle Armstrong, and the hatred she continues to direct at our story line hero. What ensues is the rebuilding romance and relationship between Brielle and Colby, and the potential fall-out when the truth is revealed, and Brielle is forced to choose between her father, and the man that she loves.

A DATE FOR THE DERBY is a fast paced, quick read that focuses on family, second chances, betrayal, misunderstanding and love. The premise is energetic, captivating and engaging; the characters are colorful and dynamic; the romance is sexy, sweet and steamy. Colby Hensley risked everything for what he believed was right, and in doing so lost his family, his friendships and the woman he loved. Once the truth is finally revealed, Colby discovers that the losses are temporary but the love is forever.

Except I promised him one more thing—a baby. A Percy heir.

There’s no way out of this one. Either I comply or lose everything. Do I risk the husband I’m just learning to love or is this my breaking season?

••••••••

REVIEW:THE BREAKING SEASON  aka CRUEL MARRIAGE is the third instalment in KA Linde’s contemporary, adult SEASONS erotic, romances series focusing on a group of connected, powerful and well-to-do friends in the Upper East Side of New York City.. This is businessman Camden Percy, and socialite Katherine Van Pelt’s story line. THE BREAKING SEASON can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order as their story has been building for several instalments. SEASONS is a spin off from the author’s CRUEL Trilogy where we are first introduced to the players and manipulators of the rich and powerful on the Upper East Side.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Camden and Katherine) THE BREAKING SEASON follows the acrimonious relationship between businessman Camden Percy, and socialite Katherine Van Pelt. Camden Percy and Katherine Van Pelt are a married couple. Katherine’s father destroyed his family, and in the ensuing aftermath Camden offered Katherine a contract to save face, and prevent the family from falling from disgrace but Katherine’s struggling relationship with Camden is fraught with anger, miscommunication, jealousy, and perceived betrayal including the possibility of infidelity in body and heart. With their one year anniversary on the horizon, Camden demands Katherine honor the terms of their contract but not all is well in Katherine’s life. As Camden continues to do battle with his father at work, Katherine’s emotional and physical health slowly spirals out of control. What ensues is the tempestuous and heart breaking relationship between Camden and Katherine, and the potential fall-out as the sins of the father begin to pull Camden under, and Katherine struggles with issues of control.

Katherine and Camden’s marriage of convenience is a bone of contention between one another and their friends. Katherine has been miserable since her father’s destruction of the family’s finances, and Camden’s love for Katherine is masked by the anger and frustrations of a man who refuses to give in or give up. The bitter altercations and accusations are heart breaking and painful. The $ex scenes are intimate and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and familiar secondary and supporting characters including all of the previous story line couples: Sam and Larkin (The Lying Season), Anna English and Court Kensington (The Hating Season) , Penn Kensington and his wife Natalie ; Whitley Bowen, Gavin King, Robert Dawson, : Camden’s sisters Candice and Harmony, and their father Carlyle, as well as Katherine’s mother, and Camden’s ex Fiona.

THE BREAKING SEASON (Cruel Marriage) is an intense story of family, friendships, betrayal and trust. The emotional premise is edgy ; the characters are wounded, sassy, spirited and lost; the romance is provocative seductive yet tender.

Paris is Always a Good Idea by Jenn McKinlay – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
It’s been seven years since Chelsea Martin embarked on her yearlong post-college European adventure. Since then, she’s lost her mother to cancer and watched her sister marry twice, while Chelsea’s thrown herself into work, becoming one of the most talented fundraisers for the American Cancer Coalition, and with the exception of one annoyingly competent coworker, Jason Knightley, her status as most talented fundraiser is unquestioned.

When her introverted mathematician father announces he’s getting remarried, Chelsea is forced to acknowledge that her life stopped after her mother died, and that the last time she can remember being happy, in love, or enjoying her life was on her gap year. Inspired to retrace her steps–to find Colin in Ireland, Jean Claude in France, and Marcelino in Italy–Chelsea hopes that one of these three men who stole her heart so many years ago, can help her find it again.

From the start of her journey nothing goes as planned, but as Chelsea reconnects with her old self, she also finds love in the very last place she expected.

Review:

Paris is Always a Good Idea by Jenn McKinlay is a fun standalone novel.  We meet our heroine, Chelsea Martin, who is a workaholic, with a successful job, as her company’s top fundraiser for the American Cancer Coalition.  Even with her success, she has a co-worker, who annoys her to no end.  Jason Knightley, our hero, works with Chelsea and is always one step ahead of her with his annoying sarcastic comments that drive her crazy.

Chelsea gets a surprise, when she learns that her widowed father is planning to remarry, and has only known his future bride for two weeks.  Chelsea’s sister is happy for her father, and tells Chelsea that she has stopped enjoying her life after their mother died 7 years ago.  When Chelsea learns that Jason is going to work with her on a big project, she decides it’s time for her to quit her job and take a trip to Europe to revisit her wonderful journey before her mother died. She plans to retrace her fun times, with visits to Ireland, France and Italy, trying to meet the three young men in each country that made her feel loved and joyous. Before she leaves, she learns that her boss is sick, and insists that she remain with the company to help Jason with the project, but allowing her to go on the journey.

What follows is a wonderful fun story, as Chelsea looks to find happiness and love again.  With Ireland the first stop, she finds the man whom she fell for, and though he was happy to see her, things were not the same.  But most of all, Jason ends up surprising Chelsea by coming to Ireland to work with her, as they will be meeting the person who wants to build the new project, as well as donate a large sum to the fund.   In a short time, a friendship will build between Chelsea and Jason, with them getting past their work differences and spending time together getting to know each other better personally.  Their bantering and humor were fun, and we knew pretty quickly, despite Chelsea’s determination to find a romance with one of the three men, a slow built romance will eventually bring them together.

Though her Ireland ex-boyfriend, Colin, turned into a jerk, and her meeting her France ex, Jean Claude was not meant to be; but she was thrilled to see Marcelino in Italy. He ran a very successful vineyard, not to mention lived in a Castle and was a great guy; even Jason thought he was great.  Will Chelsea convince herself that she wanted to stay with Marcelino or does she fall in love with Jason?

Paris is Always Good Idea was a sweet, fun, enjoyable story, and I loved the travel in Ireland, France and Italy.  Lots of beauty, food and fun.  This was a different kind of book from Jenn McKinlay and I totally loved every moment.  I wholly suggest you read this wonderful romantic story.

•••••••••

REVIEW:KING OF DURABIA by Naleighna Kai is the first instalment in the multi-authored, multi-cultural contemporary, adult KNIGHTS OF THE CASTLE romance series-a spin off from the Kings of the Castle series. This is Afircan-American Ellena Kiley, and former Durabian Crown Prince Kamran’s story line.

WARNING: Due to the story line content, there may be some triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from several third person perspectives including Ellena and Kamran KING OF DURABIA focuses on the quick building romance and forbidden relationship between African-American Ellena Kiley, and former Durabian Crown Prince Kamran. A trip to Durabia for her high school reunion found our heroine, Ellena Kiley, rescuing the young, errant child of the King of Durabia. When said king offered Ellena anything she wanted, Ellena said she wanted a husband, and in the ensuing melee, Ellena found herself with the King’s eldest son, Kamran, as her current consort. Several touristy type trips with her class-mates and Prince Kamran, would quickly culminate in a proclamation of love but a relationship forbidden by Islamic law. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Kamran and Ellena, and the potential fall-out as Ellena becomes of the target of jealousy, discrimination and hatred in a country where racism and misogyny are rampant and excepted.

Having never produced an heir with his two previous wives, Crown Prince Kamran has been removed from the line of succession but meeting Ellena Kiley meant a chance at love for our story line hero but all is not well in the within the confines of the Durabian castle as threats against Ellena force Kamran to reveal to truth about what was and what may never be. Ellena Kiley knew she would struggle within the confines of Islamic laws so living in the free zone was going to be her only option but living in the free zone did not keep our heroine safe, as she would soon discover.

The relationship between Kamran and Ellena is one of immediate attraction. Ellena is quick to come to Kamran’s defense when his father, all but, throws his son to the wolves. Never expecting a union, the King and his sons quickly discover that Kamran’s love for Ellena, now includes the Kings of the Castle-Ellena’s pseudo family. The $ex scenes are passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including several of Ellena’s former classmates: Kamran’s large extended family of brothers and sisters, their husbands and wives; and the Kings of the Castle we previously met in the aforementioned series.

KING OF DURABIA is a story of family, betrayal, discrimination and love; a story of racism, sexism, religion and faith; an emotional and intense story of perseverance and love. The premise is dramatic and impassioned; the romance is captivating and seductive; the characters are energetic and strong.

A Touch of Stone and Snow by Milla Vane – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Danger lurks in the western realms. The Destroyer’s imminent return has sent the realms into turmoil as desperate citizens seek refuge—but there’s no safety to be found when demons and wraiths crawl out from the shadows. Even Koth, a northern island kingdom left untouched by the Destroyer a generation past, is besieged by terrors spawned from corrupt magics.

When Lizzan leads the Kothan army against these terrors, only to see her soldiers massacred and to emerge as the only survivor, she is called a coward and a deserter. Shunned from her home, Lizzan now wanders in solitude as a mercenary for hire, until she encounters a group of warriors seeking new alliances with the northern kingdoms—a group that includes Aerax, the bastard prince of Koth, and the man who sent her into exile.

Though they were childhood friends, Aerax cannot allow himself to be close to the only woman who might thwart his treacherous plan to save their island realm. But when a goddess’s demand binds them together, Lizzan and Aerax must find a way to overcome their painful pasts. Or there will be no future for the western realms…

Review:

A Touch of Snow and Stone by Milla Vane is the 2nd book in her fantasy series, A Gathering of Dragons.  Though they are mentioned a few times, the heroes of the first book do not play a part in this one, but I am sure in the next book we will see them all together in trying to defeat the Destroyer.

Lizzan, our heroine, is one of the best warriors for the Koth kingdom; but when she was the lone survivor of a massacre, they accused her of running away and not helping her soldiers.  She was shunned and exiled, with her name removed from the Kingdom.  Over time, she becomes a lone mercenary for hire to help those in need of protection.  Lizzan comes across a group of warriors from different kingdoms seeking alliances to fight the Destroyer.  She makes friends with some of them, until she learns that the man she always loved, Aerax, is part of the group with other Kothans.

Aerax, our hero and a prince of Koth, has been trying to find Lizzan, since he has always loved her; but he knows when she was accused of betrayal, he did not offer to help her, as he knew of her innocence. Aerax is determined to destroy Koth, and knew Lizzan would try to stop him; but now all he wants is to make amends.  I absolutely loved loved his snow leopard, Caeb.  The cat, who was loyal to both Aerax and Lizzan was a fantastic addition to this series, and all scenes with Caeb were wonderful.  There is more to what Caeb is, but I guess we will learn more in the next book.

What follows is a wild, exciting, action packed adventure, filled with myths, magic and gods.  When Lizzan goes to the god Vela for help, she is sent on a quest to protect the first person she sees, which does end up being Aerax.  They both will join hands with some of the other groups, as well as our wonderful Caeb to try to stop a demon.  It was great to watch Lizzan and Aerax begin to resume their relationship and love. It was funny to see Caeb push both of them together often.  Cute.  Knowing that if they can’t defeat the demon, their lives could be lost, they make the most of their lust for each other, which was sizzling.

A Touch of Snow and Stone is an epic fantasy at its best, with intense nonstop violent action, excitement, fantastic characters (some from the previous book) and a wonderful romance. There is a lot of details throughout as they head to Koth, keeping us on the edge of our seats to see who will survive.    If you enjoy fantasy, a great world building, with monsters, such as wraiths, and magical elements, I suggest you read this series.  Start with the first book A Heart of Blood and Ashes, and then continue to A Touch of Snow and Stone.

When she uncovers her ex, Brett, a higher-ranking officer in her unit, selling military secrets, she turns him in and returns to the simpler life she has embraced since leaving the army.  CID Special Agent Cam Harris is a career military man with a strong sense of duty. When a military prisoner who once saved his life in Afghanistan escapes while in his custody, he requests the assignment to track him down. Cam’s manhunt leads him to Audrey’s door. His prisoner—her ex—will resurface here, he’s sure of it. The feisty woman wants nothing to do with hunting down her ex, but when a terror cell she’s all-too-familiar with launches a deadly attack on army intelligence soldiers and officers, she knows it’s Brett.  Helping Cam is the right thing to do. But the attraction burning between them may be the mistake that gets her and Cam killed…

Review:

Zone of Action by Cathy Skendrovich is part of her In The Zone series.

“I’ll kill you for this, Audrey Jenkins. Sleep with one eye  open, because I’ll be coming for you, bitch. This isn’t over  by a long shot.” Excerpt from Zone of Action

Those words constantly haunt her, and they were uttered by her ex!!

Audrey had noticed her boyfriend acting really weird, and put it down to maybe an affair, that she could have coped with, what she couldn’t accept was the fact Brett was a traitor, to sell out his country was reprehensible, he had to be punished! And facing him in court took guts, he stopped being the man she loved. It was time to move on…..

CID Special Agent Cameron “Cam” Harris wanted to give his friend the benefit of the doubt. He surely couldn’t be a traitor?!  That benefit of the doubt turns out to be the biggest mistake of his career…..

Audrey is living the quiet life, serving her country as a terrorist expert has ended, she’s now a owner of a flower shop.

Having Brett escape him burned Cam, his friend was a traitor, he was going to prison, and Cam wanted to take him there. And now it’s his job to recapture him and put him back in handcuffs.

He’s almost certain Brett will go back and kill his girlfriend, but Cam thinks there is more to it than that, did she hear something she wasn’t suppose to? Or did she have something that Brett needed? Well he was going to find Audrey and ask her. She was either going to help him, or she’s bait!!

The attraction between Cam and Audrey is a slow burn romance, she isn’t ready for anyone yet, and certainly not the best friend of her traitorous ex!! But as they work together to find Brett, they can’t help but become closer. But is Cam using Audrey as bait? Will she be able to lure him out? And if Brett takes the bait, will they be able to stop him before he hurts anyone else?

Zone of Action is a fast paced action story. A few twists along the way. I don’t usually read mysteries, but I’m glad I did with this one.

Cam is ex army, a good career cut short after a good friend dies in the field. Taking his training in the army, he becomes an agent that investigates service men and women. He never once thought he’d have to take his best friend to prison.

Audrey is also ex military, so she doesn’t scare easily, which is a good job. Her being hunted by an ex would frighten most people. They work well together, find clues, working out where Brett might be, and what his game plan is.

The style of writing was really good, very descriptive, flowed really well. Nothing seemed wasted, I didn’t get that feeling of page filling.  Secondary characters Zack and Elena were great, Elena is best friend and coworker to Audrey, their friendship is lovely, very solid. Especially when Brett burns down the flower shop!  I liked Zack, very down to earth, liked his sense of humour (hoping he gets a book)

If you like your romance with a heavy dose of military and mystery, then this book is for you.

A warrior tempts a wicked goddess…

Seamus Lochlann is always up for a good time-or a battle. At least that’s how it looks to his friends and family who count on his infectious humor and lethal sword arm. Fighting the war goddesses’ rogue warriors on the dark streets of East LA to defend his best friend puts him on the radar of the lustiest goddess in the Celtic pantheon. Maeve wants to spend him in her bed-and she’ll stop at nothing to enjoy the pleasures she expects from him.

A talisman knows his fate…

Fallon Graham can’t shake the premonitions. Flashing through her mind are stories with an up-close-and-personal view of the war goddess stealing the life force of a noble warrior who fights back again and again. Her heart breaks as she watches the warrior’s desperate struggles for his dignity and a chance to die honorably on the battlefield. Never in a million years would she have predicted that dream-warrior would walk right into her office and ask for a date.

Together, they can change the story.

A chance encounter at a mountain cabin seals their fate. The woman Seamus has searched for, the woman the gods determined to be his mate, is the only woman who’s ever turned him down. REVIEW: BARD is the third full-length instalment in Tam DeRudder Jackson’s contemporary, adult TALISMAN paranormal, fantasy, Celtic mythology series. This is marketing promoter Fallon Graham, and twenty-six year old, security specialist Seamus Lochlann’s story line. BARD can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order or book one TALISMAN for back ground and history.

SOME BACKGROUND: Centuries earlier, the Morrigan cursed the descendants of the Sheridan family, a curse that has the potential to be broken with the mating of a warrior and his fated mate. Desperate to prevent the breaking of the curse, Morgan and her sister Maeve set into motion a series of battles that will pull the Sheridan family into a war where family and friendships will be tested. Morrigan is part of Celtic mythology representing the cycle of birth and death, but is also the patron of magic and revenge, prophecy and night.

Told from several third person perspectives including Seamus and Fallon BARD follows the building relationship between marketing promoter Fallon Graham, and twenty-six year old, security specialist and Celtic warrior Seamus Lochlann. Seamus Lochlann had yet to find his fated Talisman but a visit to a local sports centre found Seamus hoping the fiery auburn haired receptionist was his fated mate. A quick trip to his family cabin in the woods found Seamus face to face with Fallon Graham, when a sudden storm forced a hiking Fallon in search of a place to stay. Discovering each was the other’s fated mate, Fallon and Seamus got down to business but Fallon’s repeated dream where she watches as Seamus dies becomes the stuff of her nightmares when Maeve captures our couple and forces Fallon to watch as her beloved is sexually tortured to death. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Fallon and Seamus, and the potential fall-out as the naïve and ill-prepared Fallon, struggles with her powers, and how to help the man with whom she has fallen in love.

Fallon Graham comes from a long line of warriors and Talismans whose discriminatory attitude towards the magical Druid has affected their daughter’s Talisman training. Unaware of her true potential, Fallon battles between head and heart, and slowly loses hope when she is unable to help the man that she love. Seamus Lochlann is a carefree warrior but a warrior prepared to die to protect the lineage of warriors and Talisman. Hoping against hope that Fallon will be able to stop her dreams from become reality, Seamus will slowly succumbed to the Celtic goddess, when his mate is not strong enough to stop fate from happening.

The relationship and love between Seamus and Fallon is quick to develop. Once a warrior finds his mate, the Talisman quickly falls for the man she was chosen to protect but all is not well Graham family lineage, and Seamus may suffer when his Talisman is unable to protect the man that she loves. The $ex scenes are passionate without the use of over the to, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters, most of whom we have met in the previous instalments: Rowan and Alyssa (Talisman #1); Shanley and Alaisdair (Prophetess 2.5); goddesses Scathach (warrior woman and martial arts teacher), Maeve and Morgan, and god Taranis. We are introduced to Fallon’s aunt Keela and Uncle Griffin; her parents Clancy and Ivori Graham; and Seamus’ sister Siobhan MacManus and her warrior Duncan, and Duncan’s sister Jennifer.

BARD is a story of family, friendships, power and magic; discrimination, pain, anger and retribution. The premise is detailed and dramatic ; the characters are animated and colorful but I struggled with our heroine who was emotionally and magically weak ; the romance is seductive and captivating.
