REVIEW:RATE A DATE is the fifth instalment in Monica Murphy’s contemporary, adult DATING erotic, romance series. This is hair stylist Eleanor Murray, and professional football player Mitch Anderson’s story line. RATE A DATE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Mitch and Eleanor) RATE A DATE follows the building relationship between hair stylist Eleanor Murray, and professional football player Mitch Anderson. Mitch and Eleanor are tired of the dating scene. Eleanor Murray soon discovers that her best friend has signed her up on the Rate a Date dating app, and her first ‘date’ doesn’t go too well. Meanwhile, professional football player Mitchell Anderson, bored with the one-night stands, and the stream of women only looking for fame and money, finds himself ‘talking and texting’ to Eleanor Murray, a woman who is quickly stirring something within our story line hero. A bachelorette weekend in Vegas for Caroline Abbott (Save the Date #1) finds Eleanor meeting the man who is currently starring in all of her fantasies and dreams but a man whom she will discover is keeping secret his true identity. What ensues is the quick building romance and relationship between Eleanor and Mitch, and the potential fall-out as Mitch’s professional life is about to be exposed.

Mitchell Anderson wants to fall in love. He wants a woman to call his own, and meeting Eleanor Murray gives Mitchell a hope for the future but a future that is currently predicated upon a lie. Mitchell knows he has to come clean but our hero struggles with revealing the truth to a woman who only knows that the man with whom she is falling in love, is an ordinary man. Eleanor Murray is lonely. One of the two remaining single women in her group of friends, Eleanor battles between head and heart when her friend sets up a dating profile in an effort to find Eleanor someone to love.

The relationship between Mitch and Eleanor begins as a meet and greet in Vegas having spent days and nights texting and talking. Now that Mitch and his team have moved to Vegas, our hero spends with weekend getting know the woman with whom he will fall in love but a lie of omission threatens their potential happily ever after. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and energetic secondary and supporting characters-most of the women we have me in the previous instalments.

RATE A DATE is a story of secrets and lies; friendships and love. The premise is heart warming, uplifting and fun; the romance is sexy and seductive; the characters are animated and sassy.

“You’re just saying that.”“Not really,” I tell her truthfully. “You’re gorgeous.”

“Mitch.” She draws my name out, like she’s all embarrassed. “You really think so?”

“Oh, I know so.” I lean back, taking her in. “I can’t wait to meet you in person this weekend.”

“Wait a minute. You’re not some secret serial killer, are you?” She asks this with such seriousness, I start to laugh all over again.

“Even if I was, do you think I’d tell you?” I grin, unable to contain it. “I’d keep it a secret, right?”

“True.” She smiles. Laughs a little. “It’s just…my friends don’t want me to meet you by myself. They want to come with me.”

“Swear to God, I’m not a serial killer, Eleanor,” I say solemnly, holding my hand up and making the peace sign. “Scout’s honor.”

“That’s not what you do when you say scout’s honor,” she says quickly. Little Miss Smartypants. “You do your fingers like this.” She holds up her hand, the first three fingers up and pressed close together.

“How do you know that? Were you a secret Boy Scout? Have a brother who was one?”

“I, um, dated a guy who was an Eagle Scout.” Her expression turns sheepish. “He was really into the Boy Scouts.”

“Was that in high school?”

“Uh. No. College.”

I’m frowning. “College?”

“Well, he got his Eagle Scout status his senior year, but was still involved with the scouts through college. And—beyond.” She presses her hand against her forehead and briefly closes her eyes. “Fine, I went out with him after he graduated college. I never really went to college. I went to beauty school.” She drops her hand, sending me a meaningful look.

“So you went out with a guy who was still excited about being an Eagle Scout…and he was a grown man.” I start to laugh. “Sounds fun.”

“I’ve not had the greatest luck when it comes to dating guys,” she admits.

“Oh yeah?” I’m rubbing my chin again, contemplating her. Wondering what the hell is wrong with all the men in her life that they don’t know how to treat her.

And then I realize how lucky I am that they all blew it so now I have my chance.

“Yeah. I’m just—I don’t pick well. And I always get really awkward around guys.” She rolls her eyes. “I can say really dumb things. Or I just act all nervous and weird. I start to ramble.”

“Like now?”

“Yes.” She laughs. “Like now. I’m rambling. I’m totally rambling and you don’t look bored, so I take that as a good sign.”

“I think the rambling thing is cute. I like your awkwardness.”

“Wait until you see it in person.”

“I can’t wait to see you in person,” I tell her with a sly smile, making her blush. “I can’t wait to give you a hug. See what you smell like.”

“Mitch.” Her cheeks look on fire.

“What? I’m serious. You wear perfume?”

“Of course.”

“Use scented shampoo?”

“Duh. I’m a hairstylist.”

“Then I can’t wait to see how all those scents mix and create the essence of you.” Oooh, that was a good one. I didn’t even mean to say that. It just spilled out of my mouth.

“Aw, you’re being so sweet.” She sends me a heated glance. “Kind of sexy.”

“You think me talking about how you smell is sexy?”

“Honestly, Mitch? I think everything about you is sexy,” she says with a little sigh, right before she claps her hand over her mouth. “I probably shouldn’t have said that.” Her voice is muffled behind her palm.

“I love that you said that,” I say, warming up to this conversation big time. “I think you’re pretty fucking sexy too, Eleanor.” Hesitating, I wonder if I should tell her what I did in the shower.

Maybe not.

“Have you ever sexted with someone before?” she asks, sounding genuinely curious.

“I guess.” I shrug, not really wanting to answer her. Makes me feel like a slimy shit to admit that yes, I have. Lots of times. “Sort of. I’ve made plenty of  booty call messages. DTF, stuff like that.”

She frowns. “DTF?”

“Down to fuck.”

“Oh.” Her eyes are wide. Her mouth is formed in this perfect O. “Oh.”

“Back when I wasn’t big on relationships,” I add. “But I’ve changed.”

“You have?”

“Yeah. I’m looking for a special girl.”

“Really?”

“I want a long-term relationship.”

“It’s too bad you’re moving,” she says, sounding sad.

I don’t want to focus on that right now. I don’t even know if this girl is the one. She has great potential. But we need to meet in person first. Test it out.

“We’ll see each other this weekend,” I remind her.

“I know!” Her face brightens. “And I’m excited.”

“So am I, Eleanor.”

So am I.

Description:
Bake a chance on love.

Aubrey Choi loves living in her small town nestled in the foothills of California, running her highly successful bakery away from the watch of her strict Korean parents. When a cake mix-up and a harsh review threaten all of her hard work and her livelihood, she never thought the jaded food critic would turn out to be her one-night stand. And she sure as hell never thought she’d see her gorgeous Korean unicorn again. But when Landon Kim waltzes into her bakery trying to clean up the mess he had a huge hand in making, Aubrey is torn between throwing and hearing him out.

When she hears his plan to help save her business, Aubrey knows that spending three weeks in California wine country working with Landon is a sure recipe for disaster. Her head is telling her to take the chance to save her bakery while her heart—and her hormones—are at war on whether to give him a second chance. And it just so happens that Landon’s meddling friends want them to spend those three weeks as close as possible…by sharing a villa.

When things start heating up, both in and out of the kitchen, Aubrey will have to make a choice—to stick it out or risk her heart.

Review:

A Sweet Mess by Jayci Lee is a delightful sweet romance.  We meet our heroine, Aubrey Choi, as she runs a popular local bakery, and becomes upset when there is a mix-up and a cake she made for a young girl’s birthday party was given to the wrong person.  With the child upset, Aubrey promises to make another one in time for the party, but worries about who did get the cake with strange things inside, such as gummy bears & peanut butter (upon the request of the young girl).  That night, at the bar she meets and has a one-night stand with handsome hot stranger.

Landon Kim, our hero, is a famous food critic, who is stuck in a small town while his car is being fixed.  He is the one who got the wrong cake, and decides to write a horrible review.  To his dismay, after the article is written, he learns she is the beautiful young lady with whom he had a glorious one-night affair.  Landon’s boss tries to convince him to write a follow-up article explaining the mix up, and that it was intended for a child birthday; but Landon refuses, as he does not want to ruin his reputation.  He learns that Aubrey’s bakery has lost many customers, and she is having problems meeting the expenses. Landon, with help from his friend, a popular tv food show star, will offer Aubrey a chance to show her great baking and cooking skills on TV, helping to redeem her reputation; she jumps at the chance.  Though Aubrey is not too happy with Landon, especially with them going to spend 3 weeks in the wine country where they will film the show.

What follows is a fun romantic and comedic story, as both Aubrey and Landon do their best to not act on their lust for each other.  I really loved both Aubrey and Landon as they truly made a great couple.  But at times I wanted to smack Landon, as he always thought of his career first, and even when he wanted to help Aubrey, he thought it best to step away.  One of the best things about this book was all the wonderful delicious food and pastries recipes, as well as different kinds of wine.  A Sweet Mess was a delightful sweet, sexy sizzling romance, a wonderful couple, great secondary characters and so much fun.  This is the first book I have read by Jayci Lee, who wrote a fabulous passionate story that you can’t help but enjoy from start to finish.  I suggest you read A Sweet Mess.

“How’s this?” He’d chosen a small table at the back corner. When Aubrey nodded, he pulled out her chair and took a seat across from her.
Their proximity and relative privacy made the air between them hum with electricity. Their knees brushed every time either of them shifted in their seat, sending bolts of desire through him. A sharp intake of breath and a parting of her lips revealed Aubrey wasn’t immune to their magnetic attraction.
Landon had dated his fair share of beautiful women. There was no reason to act like a gawky teenager, but his roaring heart and churning stomach said otherwise. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt nervous around a woman. Her hand was resting less than four inches away from his, but he broke out in a cold sweat working up the nerve to brush his knuckles against it.
He started when Aubrey traced her fingers across the back of his hand with a shy smile. “So, Landon from out of town, what’s your dream?”
His blood had gone south at her touch, leaving nothing for his brain, but he was even more dumbstruck by her question. The woman threw him off balance on all fronts.
“Not big on making small talk, are you?” He managed to keep his voice steady despite his spinning head and hardening body.
“If I’m going to have a chat with a complete stranger, I might as well have an interesting one.” A deep blush stained her cheeks, and her lashes fluttered to hide her eyes. “Besides, you’re leaving tomorrow. I was hoping we could pack a lot into tonight.”
Landon sucked in a sharp breath. Her shy and earnest declaration moved him, and he fought the urge to pull her across the table to kiss her senseless. Instead, he lifted Aubrey’s hand and brushed a kiss on her pale inner wrist. A wolfish grin spread across his face when she gasped at his touch.
“My dream was to open my own restaurant.” To his shock, the truth stumbled out of him. A truth he’d refused to face for the past decade. Maybe he was desperate to give her an interesting conversation. A memorable one. “Someplace spacious and comfortable where people can enjoy a delicious meal without pretense or a six-figure salary.”
“That sounds amazing. What kind of food are we talking about?”
“Whatever inspiration strikes me. If I had to label it, New American–slash–Korean fusion will have to do.”
“I love Korean food. I would totally eat there.” Aubrey sat forward, her eyes round and sparkling. “So you’re Korean? I am, too.”
“Yes, I’m Korean, and you would be more than welcome to eat at my restaurant.”
“Are you a chef?”
“No, but I trained to be one. Have you heard of the CIA?”
“The Central Intelligence Agency? You learned to cook for undercover agents while dodging bullets and jumping out of airplanes?” She cocked her head to the side and gazed at him with solemn interest.
“I . . . um.” Landon was fairly certain she was messing with him, but insulting her wouldn’t be the best way to seduce her. “It’s . . .”
Aubrey’s pale skin turned from pink to crimson before she erupted into laughter, her frame trembling like a 6.8 earthquake. She held up a finger, gripping her side, pantomiming she needed a minute. He crossed his arms over his chest and leveled her with a steely glare, which wasn’t an easy feat considering her infectious mirth.
“I’m s-sorry, but you had to see your face. You couldn’t decide whether a small-town girl like me knew about the Culinary Institute of America or whether I was pulling your leg.”
Mischievous little fox. He needed to get her back for that. “Actually, that’s incorrect.” He drew closer to her, his lips close to her ear, and lowered his voice to a deep, gritty whisper. “I was debating whether or not I should tell you the truth, because if I did, I’d have to terminate you.”
Aubrey stared at him in silence for a second, and then a delighted grin spread across her face. “This is fun.”
“Yeah, it is.” Landon was surprised to find he meant it. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d had fun. He certainly had pleasant and interesting times, but fun times? No, this felt alien.
His earlier hesitation forgotten, he ran his knuckles down the side of her face, relishing the feel of her warm, silky skin. Aubrey leaned lightly into his hand, and her eyes slid shut. She was so responsive to his touch. Landon’s mouth went dry, and all he could think was more. He wanted to make her laugh again. He ached to make her fall apart in his arms with her swollen lips calling out his name.
“You’re beautiful,” Landon murmured, unable to look away from her.
“So are you.” Aubrey’s lips curved into a barely there smile that squeezed his heart.
He’d gone to the brewery for a pint to wash away the bitter taste of his sorry day, but he’d discovered something far more intoxicating—something potent enough to tip him off-balance. Aubrey made his blood sing and his rational thoughts melt away. The floor seemed to grow solid and strong, and his body settled heavily into his seat like he’d dropped anchor across from her—as though she had a gravitational pull all her own and he was helpless against it.
He’d led a nomadic life for a decade. He didn’t know how to stay still for long. The smart thing to do would be to run the hell away from this woman, whose mere proximity made it unimaginable to even leave the table.
But smart wasn’t part of his vocabulary at the moment. Greedy, feral, and desperate passion overwhelmed all else. He stood abruptly from his seat, and Aubrey’s mouth parted in surprise. Then he grasped her hand and raised her to her feet.
“Do you want to get out of here?” His eyes bored into hers, his desire and urgency displayed for her to see.
“Yes.”

The Dearly Beloved by Cara Wall-Review & Interview

The Dearly Beloved by Cara Wall-Review and Interview

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo / Google Play

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 7, 2020.

The Dearly Beloved traces two married couples whose lives become entangled when the husbands become copastors at a famed New York city congregation in the 1960s.

Charles and Lily, James and Nan. They meet in Greenwich Village in 1963 when Charles and James are jointly hired to steward the historic Third Presbyterian Church through turbulent times. Their personal differences however, threaten to tear them apart.

Charles is destined to succeed his father as an esteemed professor of history at Harvard, until an unorthodox lecture about faith leads him to ministry. How then, can he fall in love with Lily—fiercely intellectual, elegantly stern—after she tells him with certainty that she will never believe in God? And yet, how can he not?

James, the youngest son in a hardscrabble Chicago family, spent much of his youth angry at his alcoholic father and avoiding his anxious mother. Nan grew up in Mississippi, the devout and beloved daughter of a minister and a debutante. James’s escape from his desperate circumstances leads him to Nan and, despite his skepticism of hope in all its forms, her gentle, constant faith changes the course of his life.

••••••••

REVIEW:THE DEARLY BELOVED by Cara Wall follows the lives of four people, two couples and their relationships both in and out of the church.

Told from third person perspectives THE DEARLY BELOVED, set against the turbulent times of the 50s, 60s and 70s- following the end World War II, the Korean War, and the drama and protestations of the Vietnam conflict-THE DEARLY BELOVED is a story of opposites attract including the opposition to church and faith. Lily lost her parents at the age of fifteen, and in the ensuing aftermath walked away from church and God. Meeting Charles, a devout man with aspirations of the cloth found Lily struggling with a direction in life, a direction that would take Lily towards a path in opposition to her husband’s faith, and those of the Church for which he attends.

Nan grew up following the preachings and ministry of her beloved father but never expected to fall in love with a man who struggles with his faith. Charles earlier years brought with it the pain of hardship and the aftermath of war, but a life focusing on God gave Charles a purpose and a path, albeit a path that meandered both in and out of the spiritual belief.

THE DEARLY BELOVED is not a story of God and religion, but a story of faith, doubt and belief. Both couples will struggle with family, friendships, and acceptance. Lily is a woman intent on following a path of protests and equal rights, while Nan battles to accept that Lily will never be the friend she was hoping to find.

Cara Wall’s story will resonate with readers regardless of their religious beliefs. A journey of four unlikely friends, whose personal relationships, are in opposition to their professional lives, THE DEARLY BELOVED is a thought provoking and character driven story about the humanity of faith ( as religion is a man-made construct); the conflict and arrogance of a belief system that seemingly goes against the reality of the world; and the promise of acceptance, the optimism and judgment, and the perception that faith, belief and prayer are the balm to a world in pain and sin.

There are struggles and battles, a crisis of confidence between man and God, and a crisis of faith between man and church. The character development of Nan and Lily is lacking, to some degree, as neither one is willing to accept that which they do not understand including the belief in, or lack of belief in a higher power, while James and Charles waiver in their own beliefs as the personal struggles and hardships of both couples come to fruition.

TRC: Hi Cara and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of The Dearly Beloved.

We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Cara: I am a native New Yorker—I was born in New York City and grew up here and in London.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Cara: I was always a voracious reader and as soon as I realized that real, living people were writing books, I knew I wanted to do that, too. I went to a wonderfully supportive high school, Emma Willard—which, coincidentally, is the school the main character attends in Elizabeth Gilbert’s City of Girls. So many of my teachers there encouraged me to write: my freshman English teacher told me “I was not using the talent I so obviously possessed”, which I took as a challenge, the English department let me write a novel instead of taking senior literature, and my sophomore Creative Writing teacher introduced me to Writing Down The Bones, by Natalie Goldberg, which is the book that absolutely convinced me to be a writer. Because of their support, I never doubted that I had potential—even when I couldn’t figure out how to use it effectively.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties did you encounter writing and publishing this story?

Cara: My greatest challenge as a writer is ALWAYS getting myself to sit down to write. There were many years during the creation of this book when I did not write at all, because I was working, raising my child, and focused on the daily chores of being a grown up. Even now, I have to bribe myself with cookies to start typing.

Once I wrote it, the process of getting this book published was absolutely lovely! I met my wonderful agent, Wendy Levinson, at a mom’s night out for our kids’ school, and she found my incredible editor, Marysue Rucci. I have loved every moment of working with these two women.

TRC: Would you please tell us something about the premise of THE DEARLY BELOVED?

Cara: The Dearly Beloved follows two couples from their courtships through their first life crises. I have always been fascinated by the ways we create relationships with one another and wanted to explore the complications of the “after the happily ever after”. The two couples meet when the men become co-ministers at a church in New York City in 1963, and the women dislike each other at first sight. It was fascinating to spend so many years exploring how these two couples learn to live and work together, to support each other, even though they would never have chosen to be friends.

TRC: What kind of research/plotting did you do, and how long did you spend researching /plotting before beginning THE DEARLY BELOVED?

Cara: The characters in The Dearly Beloved are inspired by the two ministers I grew up with in my childhood church, so I had a pretty clear physical picture of them from the very beginning. I don’t write chronologically—I’m not a linear thinker—so I had many character sketches and scenes written before I started even thinking about a plot. I did quite a bit of research on autism, New York in the 1960’s, and how ministers are trained. But I did all of that during the process of writing, not before, so the most accurate answer to your question is that I just jumped into the book without a plan, and it grew on its own.

TRC: Do you believe authors should be historically accurate when writing an historical, fictional story line?

Cara: This is a hard question. Every author has to create a whole world for the reader, and I was a history major, so I find researching the details of historical time periods incredibly fun. I do think it’s the historical author’s job to represent history accurately—food, clothing, architecture, smells, sounds, current events. But there are so many wonderful ways to write historical fiction that subvert what we know of a time period; I’m thinking especially of books and stories that give minor historical characters time on center stage. Still, even if a writer chooses to revise history, I believe every author of historical fiction needs to have a good grounding in the details of their chosen time period—otherwise why write historical fiction?

TRC: Do you believe the cover image plays a deciding factor for many readers in the process of selecting a book or new series to read?

Cara: I think the synopsis on the book jacket is more important than the cover, but the deciding factor for me is always recommendations from friends.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Cara: The characters, every single time.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writers fail in this endeavor?

Cara: An acting teacher once told me that the purpose of art is to give people the gift of living through emotional experiences they could never have in their ordinary lives. She went on to say that the only way to give people those experiences is for the actor to live through them, fully and openly, on stage. “If you don’t cry, they won’t cry,” she said.

Writers need to truly feel what their characters feel in any given moment. You can’t just assume a character is happy, you need to sit with the character—or inside the character—and really tune into what’s happening in their body, in their mind, in their heart. It’s often very surprising. A character may, indeed, be happy but also angry, resentful, or bitter. This complexity is what brings characters to life on the page. When I write, my characters are real people to me, with strengths, weaknesses, biases, hopes and hatreds that are completely different than my own. I have to get to know them and then write THEIR stories for them, as carefully and truly as I can. It takes an inordinate amount of time, vulnerability, and empathy.

Another thing I learned in acting school is that it is crucially important to know what your characters want—not just in the big picture of the plot, but in each moment you choose to include on the page. This is especially important for dialogue. Conflicting desires make for electric conversations between characters. Put two people who want very different things in a room and give them a time limit to try to resolve the problem. The whole page will crackle.

TRC: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

Cara: I don’t ever listen to music when I write—I’m not a huge music person and it would really distract me.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

Cara: I have no idea! What is the biggest conception people have about authors?

TRC: What is something that few, if anyone, know about you?

Cara: I studied flamenco dancing for four years, and still get my castanets out every once in a while.

TRC: Who is your favorite author (living or dead)?

Cara: That’s an impossible question to answer! But some of my favorite books are A Little Life, by Hana Yanagahiri; The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert; State of Wonder, by Ann Patchett; Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward; and Me Talk Pretty One Day, by David Sedaris.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Cara: I am working on a book about a painting that is left on the steps on the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It follows two storylines: one in the present, about the people trying to figure out why the painting is significant, and one in the past that follows a painter in Italy in the years after World War II.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Nora and Carter), and a final chapter by Maggie, AFTER ALL follows the forbidden, workplace romance between forty year old, attorney, widower and single father Carter Shaw, and thirty-four year old, divorcee and executive assistant Nora Hayes. Nora Hayes has worked as Carter’s executive assistant for close to ten years, and in the five years since the death of his wife Darcy, Nora has become babysitter, caretaker and friend to his daughter Gabby. Married to the job, Nora’s divorce one year earlier finds our heroine working fourteen hour days to keep her boss and the office running smoothly but the sexual tension between Carter and Nora is growing exponentially, and it is only a matter of time before Nora and Carter cross the line into full blown romance when an unexpected snow storm strands our couple at the office, over night. Carter Shaw knows there is a work place rule about fraternizing with fellow employees, but as the boss and owner, Carter begins to push the boundaries with the woman with whom he will fall in love. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Nora and Carter, as our couple traverse the employee/boss / single father minefield, and a personal crises of which Carter will fail.

Both Carter and Nora struggle with their parental relationships destroyed by issues of control. Nora is about to get a crash course in restraint when Carter’s twelve year old daughter Gabby begins to push the child-parent boundaries, and Carter battles between head and heart as it pertains to his relationship with our story line heroine.

The relationship between Carter and Nora is a forbidden boss/employee affair but Carter finds himself intrigued by the woman that is currently running his professional life. Having remained single for close to five years, Carter’s partners Finn and Quinn push our hero to take the next step toward his future, and a relationship with Nora Hayes. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The colorful and strong secondary and supporting characters include Finn and London (All the Way #1), Quinn and Sienna (All It Takes #2), Carter’s daughter Gabby, and Finn and Quinn’s mother Maggie; Nora’s bestie Christopher, as well as the head of HR Mary, who may or may not have it out for our story line heroine.

AFTER ALL is a story of second chances for our leading couple. Both have love and lost, and are about to discover that love is better the second time around. The premise is heart warming, emotional and energetic ; the romance is sassy and provocative; the characters are playful, spirited and dynamic. AFTER ALL is my favorite instalment in the Romancing Manhattan series with a little bit of everything for the romantic in all of us.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 13, 2020

The feud between Weston Lockwood and me started at the altar.

Only neither of us attended the wedding, and the nuptials happened decades before either of us was born.

Our grandfathers had been best friends and business partners, at least up until my grandfather’s wedding day—when his bride-to-be blurted out she couldn’t marry him because she was also in love with Weston‘s grandfather.

The two men spent years fighting over Grace Copeland, who also happened to be their third business partner.  But in the end, neither man could steal half of her heart away from the other.

Eventually, they all went their separate ways. Our grandfathers married other women, and the two men became one of the biggest business rivals in history.

Our fathers continued the family tradition of feuding. And then Weston and I did, too.

For the most part, we kept as much distance as possible.

Until the day the woman who started the feud died—and unexpectedly left one of the most valuable hotels in the world to our grandfathers to share.

Now I’m stuck in a hotel with the man I was born to hate, trying to unravel the mess our families inherited.

As usual, it didn’t take long for us to be at each other’s throats.

Weston Lockwood was everything I hated: tall, smart, cocky, and too gorgeous for his own good.  We were fire and ice.

But that shouldn’t be an issue. Our families were used to being at war. There was just one minor problem, though. Every time Weston and I fought, we somehow wound up in bed.

REVIEW:THE RIVALS by Vi Keeland is a stand alone, contemporary erotic romance story line focusing on hoteliers and rivals Sophia Sterling and Weston Lockwood.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Sophia and Weston) THE RIVALS follows the enemies to lovers relationship between hoteliers and rivals Sophia Sterling and Weston Lockwood. Decades earlier Grace Copeland fell in love with two men-Oliver Lockwood and August Sterling-thus ending a friendship and partnership that would turn into a rivalry that pitted the Lockwoods and Sterlings against one another for years to come. With the recent passions of Grace Copeland, the Lockwoods and Sterlings each inherited 49% of the Grace Copeland’s The Countess Hotel, forcing our story line couple to work together in an effort to prove who was worthy of the remaining 2 %. But like the previous generations, Sophia and Weston grew up hating one another, a hate based fed by the competitive nature of the Lockwood and Sterling patriarchs. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Sophia and Weston, and the potential fall-out as secrets and lies threaten any chance of happiness for our story line couple.

Weston Lockwood is the proverbial bad boy but as such our hero struggles with his place in the Lockwood family. Having lost the only person he has ever loved, Weston has floundered, slowly spiralling out of control. Working along side Sophia Sterling is Weston’s last chance to prove he is capable of taking control but in the end it is Sophia who is taking control of Weston’s heart.

The relationship between Sophia and Weston is an enemies to lovers wherein our couple spent one night together years before. Forced to work beside the man whose attitude and ego push Sophia’s buttons, our heroine quickly finds herself falling for a man who is about to break her heart. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Sophia’s father, and her half-brother Spencer, Sophia’s best friend Scarlett, as well as several employees at The Countess Hotel.

THE RIVALS is a story of family, friendships, betrayal and love. A story about one woman who fell in love with two men, a love that would set into motion decades of hatred between two families for no other reason than jealousy and a broken heart. The premise is captivating and intriguing; the romance is passionate and seductive; the characters are energetic, colorful and charismatic.

REVIEW:BEAUTIFUL CRIMINAL is the first instalment in MN Forgy’s contemporary, adult OMERTA LAW erotic, romantic suspense, mafia series. This is heir to the DeAngelo family and underlying boss Kieran DeAngelo, and the Bravado family princess Leona Bravado’s story line.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Kieran and Leona) BEAUTIFUL CRIMINAL focuses on the upcoming war between two families in the criminal underworld-the DeAngelos and the Bravados. Fifteen years earlier, Leona Bravado’s father disappeared without a trace, and two young boys were indoctrinated into the dark world of the mob. Fast forward to present day wherein Leona Bravado is witness to a crime, a crime that sees one woman dead and her husband clinging to life. In an effort to keep our heroine silent, Kieran DeAngelo is ordered to marry the head of the Bravado family, currently run by Leona Bravado. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Kieran and Leona, as our couple are on the run from the people in charge.

Leona Bravado had no idea what happened to her father all those years earlier but inheriting the leadership of the Bravado family was never in the cards. Having witnessed a fire that took the life of a local business woman, Leona finds herself on the run when she discovers that she will be forced into a marriage of convenience in an effort to secure the power and control of the local mob. Kieran DeAngelo is a made man but never expected to become his father’s enforcer; his elder brother Romeo is more of a lover than a fighter, forcing Kieran to take charge in an effort to save his brother’s life.

The relationship between Kieran and Leona is an enemies to lovers relationship wherein Kieran has been tasked with marrying a woman he does not love. With the heroine on the run, Kieran goes in search of the woman that will call to his heart. A case of insta-lust to love quickly develops forcing Kieran to choose sides in a war between the DeAngelo’s and the Bravados. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters. We are introduced to the head of the DeAngelo family Emilio DeAngelo, Kieran’s brother Romeo, and uncles Tony, Leo and Gio; Leona’s advisor Dominic.

BEAUTIFUL CRIMINAL is a fast paced story of family, power, betrayal and control. The premise is dramatic but I missed the dark and gritty mafia-style trope; the characters are strong and determined; the romance is edgy -our couple are quick to fall in love. BEAUTIFUL CRIMINAL does not end on a happily ever after but a happily ever after –for now with a slight cliff hanger to keep your attention.

Description:
The Lakey sisters are perfect opposites. After their mother died and their father was lost in grief, Willa had no choice but to raise her sister, Harper, and their brother, Lucas. Then, as an adult, she put her own life on hold to nurse Harper through a terrifying illness. Now that Harper is better and the sisters are living as roommates, Willa has realized her dream of running her own bakery and coffee shop, bringing her special brand of caretaking to the whole Oceanside community.

Harper, on the other hand, is always on the go. Overcoming a terrible illness has given her a new lease on life, and she does not intend to waste it. When Harper announces her plan to summit Mount Rainier, Willa fears she may be pushing herself too far. Harper, for her part, urges Willa to stop worrying and do something outside of her comfort zone—like taking a chance on love with a handsome new customer.

Sean O’Malley is as charming as he is intriguing—a freelance photographer whose assignments take him to the ends of the earth. Soon Willa’s falling for him in a way that is both exciting and terrifying. But life has taught Willa to hedge her bets, and she wonders whether the potential heartache is worth the risk.

Life has more challenges in store for them all. But both sisters will discover that even in the darkest moments, family is everything.

Review:

A Walk Along the Beach by Debbie Macomber is a wonderful standalone novel focusing on two sisters.  The story takes place in Oceanside, Washington, where our heroine, Willa, runs a local coffee shop. Willa shares an apartment with her sister, Harper, who is the complete opposite of Willa; but they are very close.  Willa, is the more serious one, always looking out for her sister or brother, Lucas, as when her mother died, she assumed the overall responsibility of watching over her siblings.  Harper is happy go lucky, who occasionally helps Willa at the coffee shop, or is out having fun; especially since she is also a cancer survivor.

Harper also pushes Willa to open up to a new customer, who has been eyeing her.  Sean O’Malley, is not a coffee lover, but he has eyes on Willa, so he comes every morning just to see her, and finally gets to talk to her when Harper pushes them together.  A slow build romance will begin, as they both feel the attraction between them. Their brother Lucas is now engaged, and he and his fiancé (Chantelle) want to plan a wedding with Willa and Harper’s help.

Just when things are looking good for the family, as well as Willa and Sean’s relationship, Harper starts getting sick.  Despite their thinking she may have pneumonia, to their grief, the prognosis is worse; Harper’s cancer is back.  What follows is an emotional ride the rest of the way, which kept us turning the page.  This was a powerful story, with Willa, Lucas, their father (who has been sober for awhile) being there to help Harper through a horrific enhanced treatment to fight the cancer.  Can Harper beat this again?

The relationship between Sean and Willa begins to fall apart, as Sean is always away, and Willa feels his job is more important than her, especially with her needing his support during these difficult times.   The closeness of the family made this such a wonderful and heart wrenching story of love, sisterhood, friendships, family, illness and tears.  A Walk Along the Beach pulls on your emotions throughout the second half of the book.  Will Harper survive?  Will Willa forgive Sean?

Debbie Macomber wrote such a great story, with fantastic characters and family bonds.  A Walk Along the Beach was a heartwarming, emotional read, that was so very well written by Macomber. I will warn you that you will need tissues, for there are tears of happiness as well as sadness.  I strongly suggest you read this book.

•••••••••

REVIEW: HAIL is the third prequel in Crimson Syn’s contemporary, adult HELLBOUND LOVERS MC erotic, romance series focusing on the Hellbound Lovers MC. This is Jack ‘Hail’ Hailey, and Franky Campesato’s story line. HAIL can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Hail and Franky) HAIL starts twenty-four years in the past, and follows Hellbound Lovers MC member Jack ‘Hail’ Hailey as he is contracted to locate and return the daughter of mafia boss Frank Campesato, Franky Campesato, a woman who wants nothing to do with her father’s life. Finding our heroine was easy but falling in love was never in the cards. Refusing to return Franky to her father, Hail finds himself walking away to protect the woman he loves when his own life is threatened for disobeying the boss. Four years would pass before Hail walks back into Franky’s life, a life wherein Franky is now part of the mafia lifestyle.

HAIL is an intensely erotic story of love, hate, love and forever. Franky is an independent business woman who is capable of looking after herself but her father’s life is about to destroy everything and more. Franky will fall in love with the man sent to take her back home but Hail will quickly disappear without a trace.

HAIL, like RYDER and BEAR, focuses on the original members of the Hellbound Lovers MC. We get a quick peak, albeit sexy and hot, into the lives of the men and women who rode a path wearing the patch of the MC. The premise is edgy ; the romance is provocative and intense but I struggle with the use of a certain four-letter word; the characters are energetic and dramatic.

My name is Crimson Syn, not really, but what fun is it to use my real name. Instead I’ll use my inner goddess’ name, it’s much more fun that way. I grew up in New York City where I had a wonderful education, loving parents and awesome friends. What more could a girl ask for?

I started writing at the age of sixteen. The first romance I read was Stephanie Laurens’ Devil’s Bride. Since then I have been influenced by dozens of flourishing romance authors and even more dashing and daring rogues. I must say it, but Fifty Shades was not my first erotic romance, nor did it influence me to start writing them. If you’ve never read Mary Balogh, Elizabeth Hoyt, Lisa Kleypas, Bertrice Small or A.N. Roquelaure’s Sleeping Beauty trilogy, then you’re missing out. Those were my sweet introductions to erotic romance, and boy were they hot.

So here I am, after reading so many wonderful stories, I have too many sinful tales of my own not to share. I like my alphas rough and possessive, and I have no shame in saying it or writing it. I had delightfully wicked teachers growing up, their books took me to new worlds and brought me new loves. So, I want to do the same for you. I want to indulge my readers in those steamy reads that will send them into the arms of dangerous alphas and deliciously sexy rogues, without leaving the confines of their nice warm bed. If I am able to entice your inner goddesses, then I have done my job and I am satisfied.
