ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 29, 2020

Months after stealing two time machines from a madman who wants them back, the Lanes, a family of six, seek safety and contentment in 1893, the latest stop on a journey through time. While parents Mark and Mary find relief at Chicago’s World’s Columbian Exposition, an extravaganza of science and splendor, children Jeremy, Laura, and Ashley find romance, friendship, and thrills.

Older son Jordan, meanwhile, heads west in search of answers. Grieving the loss of a lover from 1865, he travels to Virginia City, Nevada, where he integrates himself into a storied mining community and the heart of a pretty library clerk.

Billionaire Robert Devereux could not care less. Reeling from the theft of his million-dollar devices, he sends an assassin to the past to retrieve his property and rid the world of his former business partner and his troublesome clan.

Filled with humor, heartbreak, and suspense, THE FAIR follows a modern family on the adventure of a lifetime as they navigate their way through an unforgettable year in American history.

••••••••

REVIEW:THE FAIR is the second instalment in John A Heldt’s TIME BOX time travel series focusing on the Lane family. THE FAIR can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and history as there is a common theme and continuing premise throughout.

SOME BACKGROUND: Having created two time machines in 2021 known as the Time Box, patriarch Mark Lane discovers that his business partner, billionaire Robert Devereaux, wants to use the Time Boxes for questionable purposes. Having prepared for weeks, Mark Lane and his family pull up roots, and send themselves, along with the Time Boxes, back in time. Robert Devereaux desperate to retrieve the time boxes, and punish his one-time partner, hires a modern day assassin who goes on a time travel hunt for Mark Lane and his family.

Told from several third person perspectives THE FAIR follows the Lane family from 1865 to 1790 back to 1893 and a quick trip to 2022. Trying to stay one-step ahead of Devereaux’s assassin, the Lane family makes plans to travel to Chicago circa 1893 as the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition aka The Chicago World’s Fair celebrates the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the New World but all is not well in 1893 as a serial killer has set his sights on Chicago, and the Lane family is about to interfere in recorded history.

THE FAIR follows the Lane sons Jeremy and Jordan as each falls in love but only one will get his happily ever after. Jordan’s beloved accepts the idea of time travel and everything the Lane family has to offer but Jeremy struggles with the fact that his beloved is betrothed to someone else.

Meanwhile back in 2022, the Lane family’s co-conspirator Randy works desperately to foil all attempts at sending an assassin through time, Robert Devereaux has his people searching the historical archives to uncover the who and where of his time travelling targets.

THE FAIR and the Time Box series is a story of family, friendships, relationships and love; a series of science fiction, betrayal and power, history and revelations. From heart break to happiness, THE FAIR is a playful, energetic and transcendent story of one family’s travel through history and time.

The Roommate Problem by Mariah Ankenman – a Review

The Roommate Problem by Mariah Ankenman – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple

Description:
To Moira “Mo” Rossi, the world is full of sunshine, goodness, and happily ever afters—so of course she figures finding the perfect roomie will be easy. But after four creepos who ask if benefits come with the room and one woman who claims she’s a vampire, Mo is officially desperate. So what if the guy she agrees to on paper ends up being the Derrick Downer to her Sally Sunshine in person? She’s the queen of making lemonade.

August Porter expected his new roommate Mo to be like him—neat, practical, and oh yeah: male. Not the outrageous hippie with more stars in her eyes than there are in the sky. She’s infuriating, exasperating, his exact opposite in every possible way…and the bright ray of sunshine he didn’t even realize his gray world was missing. Suddenly, falling into bed with his roommate isn’t the worst idea he’s ever heard. Just falling in love with her is.

But one of them is keeping a secret that could turn their opposite attraction into utter disaster.

Review:

The Roommate Problem by Mariah Ankenman is the 3rd book in her Mile High Happiness series.  Moira has a sunny disposition, her rose coloured glasses outlook works for her. Her devil may care attitude and boho style. Add in her love of junk food, and you’ve got a fun loving wedding organiser.

August is a neat freak. Everything in its place, nothing wrong with a home that’s immaculate. He likes organic food, the gym and helping others. Not really a fun loving guy, more practical.

I had a chuckle through the whole book. Poor Moira, all she wants is someone like her to help pay the rent, what’s she gets is a procession of weirdos and creeps!

And when she meets August, at first she thinks he’s kind of cute, then he goes and ruins it by being a jerk. August on the other hand isn’t too impressed, she’s untidy, she’s just the total opposite of him.

But the more time they spend together, the more August sees past the mess, the jangling jewellery and pineapple on the pizza, and begins to like what he sees.  Mo sees the good in everyone, wants to give the benefit of the doubt to people. And bouncing everywhere. She lives life to the full, and she just had so much energy (probably the sugar coated cereal)

The book bounces along beautifully, the characters just spark off each other. Love August’s Gran, she’s just a fun loving person.  The romance between Mo and August is such a rollercoaster of emotions. Mo is determined to make August have fun, August is determined to help his Gran, then go back home. The attraction might sizzle between them, but he can’t fall for someone so sloppy.

But when the sparks ignite, both August and Mo try to keep to fun only, no commitments, no promises, just fun until August goes home.  And the secret one of them is keeping…. I can’t tell you, that’s for you to find out when you read this funny book.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 4, 2020

Dawn Galioto is an expert in self-defense and the most in-demand personal trainer at her Jersey gym—a perfect position for a woman fighting her way out of a troubled past and the anxieties that come with it. Then, after complaints about baffling Wi-Fi glitches at the gym, Dawn calls in disarmingly hot, high-powered computer consultant Leland Rockwell. If she can trust anyone to fix her on-the-job problems, it’s Leland. As for healing her off-hours fears, time will tell.

The cybersecurity genius of KRG, Leland sees a lot to admire in Dawn. She’s strong, quick-witted, and sexy. And something of a puzzle—one Leland wants very much to solve. If only she’d let him. Every new reveal brings him intimately closer to Dawn, but there’s another, more dangerous riddle to decipher. After going undercover to solve her Wi-Fi problem, Leland’s found a dark workplace secret. As Dawn’s past threatens a burgeoning romance, the deepening mystery they’re discovering threatens their lives.

•••••••

REVIEW:THE HACKER is the second instalment in Nancy Herkness’ contemporary, adult THE CONSULTANTS romantic suspense series focusing on three friends and business partners Derek Killion, Leland Rockwell, and Tully Gibson who own KRG Consulting Group and their Small Business Initiative offering complimentary assistance to local businesses . This is cyber security specialist Leland Rockwell, and personal trainer Dawn Galioto’s story line. THE HACKER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary. Dawn is Alice’s best friend (The Money Man #1).

Told from dual third person perspectives (Dawn and Leland) THE HACKER follows the building relationship between cyber security specialist Leland Rockwell, and personal trainer Dawn Galioto, and the complaints regarding the Wi-Fi issues at Work It Out gym where Dawn is employed. Unable to get a decent response from the gym’s current owner and IT staff, Dawn’s friend Alice suggests cyber security specialist and her fiance’s business partner Leland Rockwell, an in effort to uncover what is happening and why. When all offers of help are refused by the owner, Leland Rockwell goes undercover as a member, in an effort to ferret out the reasons why. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Leland and Dawn, and the potential fall-out as Leland uncovers a dark web connection to the Work It Out gym.

The relationship between Dawn and Leland is an acquaintance to lovers relationship when Dawn is contacted by Leland Rockwell as a favor for his partner’s fiancé. Dawn has been attracted to Leland since the first time they met but Dawn felt intimidated by her lack of a degree and Leland’s genius status and overall smarts. Back and forth emails left Dawn wondering about the who and why of our leading hero when his attempts at getting to know Dawn stir something deep within our story line heroine. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large colorful and energetic cast of secondary and supporting characters including Derek and Alice (The Money Man #1), Leland and Derek’s business partner Tully Gibson, hair stylist and Alice’s friend Natalie, as well as gym owners Vicky and Ramon Vazquez, and trainer Chad.

THE HACKER is a story of intrigue and suspense; secrets and lies; relationships, friendships and love. The premise is captivating and entertaining; the romance is flirtatious and seductive; the characters are dynamic and spirited. THE HACKER is a welcome and enjoyable addition to The Consultants series.

Falling into him was a dance with destiny; little did she know it would be her unravelling.
Zina at 24 and fresh out of the academic world, arrives in London for a new paralegal job. She is thrown for a loop when her chance at something new and uncomplicated is threatened from the moment she meets business magnate, Niklaus Clarke.

He wants more from her than she’s willing to give, because giving him more means undoing her past which she’s been running from. Unable to resist the undeniable attraction she feels or the allure of the unyielding billionaire who didn’t get to where he is by giving up, Zina surrenders.

What should have been a mere awakening turns into blurred lines and shattering of boundaries. Until their secrets, lies and half-truths threaten the gravity that pulls them toward each other.

Bridges will be crossed, bridges will be burnt. But, will bridges be rebuilt?

•••••••••

REVIEW:AWAKENED BY HIM is the first instalment in debut author Eyta Jade’s contemporary, adult ZINKLAUS erotic, multi-cultural romance series focusing on forty year old, billionaire Niklaus Clarke, and twenty-four year old, paralegal Zina Wright.

Told from first person perspective (Zina Wright) AWAKENED BY HIM follows the forbidden relationship between forty year old, billionaire Niklaus Clarke, and twenty-four year old, paralegal Zina Wright. First day on the job at the Burton Bright Law Firm, and our heroine Zina Wright comes face to face with her future but working as part of the legal team for billionaire Niklaus Clarke brought the complications of racism and xenophobia as it pertained to his family, his employees, and Zina’s roommate’s questionable boyfriend. As an African -British (Nigerian) woman Zina knows discrimination first hand but never expected to be accused of selling out her own race as a prelude to climbing the ladder with a billionaire white man. As her relationship with Niklaus Clarke takes on a life of its’ own, our couple’s secrets grow and spiral out of control. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Zina and Niklaus, and the potential fall-out as neither one comes clean about their pasts, and the secrets that could tear them apart.

The relationship between Zina and Niklaus is erotically charged; highly sexual in nature with very little in common between our leading couple. Although Niklaus wants to know everything about our story line heroine, Niklaus is reluctant to reveal the intimate details about himself, details that could affect their relationship going forward. The $ex scenes are passionate, erotic and intense but I dislike the use of a certain four-letter word in my romance story lines.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting characters including Zina’s immediate boss Mrs. Amelia; roommate and co-worker Evelina Rodriguez and her ‘boyfriend Jayce; via phone-her best friend Ashraf, and her brother Robert; Niklaus’s sister Perla, and their parents Burton and Michaela Hughes.

AWAKENED BY HIM is a story of discrimination, racism, secrets and lies-secrets and lies that have yet to be revealed. From the outset, the slow building premise did more telling than showing, then gradually changed direction largely focusing on the sexual relationship of our leading couple, and the fact that our heroine is a curvy, woman of color in a relationship with a billionaire white man, a relationship that will begin to struggle with the possibility of a hidden agenda. The characters are charismatic and energetic; the romance is aggressive and provocative. There is plenty of cultural jargon and slang (American, British, Nigerian, East Indian).

I did have a couple of issues including the perceived lack of any real chemistry between our leading couple. Yes, there are plenty of sexual situations but I didn’t feel any real palpable sexual energy. Niklaus has a need to control both in and out of the bedroom, almost Dominate in nature to a less than submissive heroine but a heroine who is willing to submit at all times. I would have also like to have had more information regarding the business interests of Niklaus Clarke, something I that I hope will be revealed in the second instalment. There is also an issue with the spoken language that didn’t feel or read like normal conversation but a stilted need to use proper grammar-contractions are in every day speech are allowed in fictional story lines 😉

Awakened by Him ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

Only my new husband isn’t what I expected. He watches me, silent and hungry, like he wants to own every part of me. And when he shares that he’s never been with a woman, I’m determined to show him his raw hunger for me is exactly what we both need.

But he’s still guarding his heart—and when secrets are revealed, our fragile love is threatened. How can I build a future with my solitary man, when our beginning was built on lies?

•••••••••

REVIEW:SOLITARY MAN is the third instalment in Sherilee Gray’s contemporary, adult SMITH BROTHERS erotic romance series focusing on the Smith family who live and work in the Colorado Rockies. This is pilot and builder Cash Smith, and erotic romance writer Riley Lewis’s story line. SOLITARY MAN can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Told from dual first person perspectives (Cash and Riley) SOLITARY MAN follows the building relationship between pilot and builder Cash Smith, and erotic romance writer Riley Lewis. Like his cousin Beau, Cash Smith placed an online ad looking for a wife never expecting to fall in love but Cash’s online ‘dating’ with Riley Lewis was built upon a lie, a lie Cash believes will destroy any chance of a future with the woman with whom he is falling in love.

Riley Lewis is on the run, running from a past that refuses to let go. Marrying Cash Smith gave Riley a chance for a future but Cash’s inexperience and his continuous withdrawals finds our heroine struggling to believe if there is any future between them. Cash Smith has no experience with the opposite sex, in fact, our hero has no idea where to begin, or how to act with our story line heroine. If not for his cousin Landon Smith, Cash believes Riley would never have agreed to marry.

The relationship between Riley and Cash begin as an online meeting when Riley replied to an ad for a wife. Believing Cash was a talkative, romantic at heart Riley will quickly learn that the man that she married is not the man with whom she had been having an online relationship. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting characters include Cash’s cousins Hank and his wife Birdie (Mountain Man #1), Beau and his wife Freya (Wild Man #2), their cousin Landon Smith, as well as the numerous children between the original brothers.

SOLITARY MAN is a quick read; a story of family, loneliness, desperation and love . The familiar premise is entertaining; the romance is sensitive and imaginative; the characters are charming.

Bully King is new-adult, dark, bully romance from New York Times bestselling author JA Huss featuring boys with power and girls at their mercy. It’s a campus shrouded in lies and a summer rush into an elite society that can propel a poor girl straight into the ruling class.

If… she’s willing to pay the price.

•••••••

REVIEW:BULLY KING is the first instalment in JA Huss’ contemporary, new adult, KINGS OF HIGH COURT COLLEGE dark bully romance duet focusing on the twenty-one year old, King of High Court College Cooper Valcourt, and the late gardener’s daughter, eighteen year old, Cadee Hunter.

WARNING: Due to the graphic nature of the story line premise, there may be some triggers for more sensitive readers. As the author says in her opening address to the readers: “ This is a bully romance and the hero will act accordingly.”

Told from dual first person perspectives (Cadee and Cooper) BULLY KING focuses on the summer ‘rush’ of new pledges to High Court College, a rush wherein our heroine, Cadee Hunter becomes the target of every bully and power hungry, spoiled trust fund kid that the school has to offer. Following a night of ‘debauchery’ on behalf of Cooper and his friends, Cooper Valcourt’s father Winston Valcourt, Chairman of High Court College sentences Cooper, and his friends Ax and Lars to ‘work’ at the summer rush camp knowing said sentence would filter out the powerful from the weak but Cooper struggles in the face of his father’s intended victim, a young woman who has suffered enough at the hands of Cooper and his friends.

Three years earlier Cadee’s life imploded, then her father died, leaving her mother struggling to make ends meet working in the campus kitchens. Fast forward to present day wherein, with Cadee’s mother’s death three weeks earlier, Cadee finds herself alone, facing expulsion or accepting a ‘job’ working in the kitchen for the College’s rush camp, work that disguises weeks of bullying at the hands of the wanna-be young and powerful rich and famous but all is not well behind the scenes, when the dirty truth and secrets reveal a hideous history of death, rape, power and control.

BULLY KING is a gritty, haunting, heart breaking and emotional story line of predator and prey; of the powerful versus the weak; of money and control. Cadee Hunter is a strong willed young woman, clearly not innocent or pure, who refuses to be a victim, and in this, places herself in the direct line of fire in an effort to secure one of the coveted scholarships to High Court College. As a target of some of the most horrific acts of bullying, Cadee consents to various forms of assault, both emotional and physical, claiming by acceptance she is no longer the victim, regardless of the outcome.

Cooper Valcourt is the ultimate spoiled, trust fund baby, who along with his best friends Ax and Lars, wreak havoc amongst those they consider beneath their status yet it is the havoc that now places Cooper in a precarious position, as he must prove he is worthy of wearing the Crown, a crown that comes with years of power, control, secrets and lies.

There is a large ensemble cast of destructive and ill-fated secondary and supporting characters: Ax Olson, Lars, Isabella, Sophie Bettington, Mona Monroe, Elexa Simpson, Dante Legosi, Michael Gottsworth, Roland Blanchard, Jamie Cruz, Ivan Turgenev, lead server Victor English, as well as Cooper’s brother Dane, and their father Chairman Winston Valcourt.

BULLY KING is not a story for the weak. There are questionable acts of consent, emotional, sexual and physical abuse, suicide attempts, domination and submission, all in the name of power, money and status. The trust-fund children are puppets, vying for a position of control but in the end, who will be pulling the strings when the truth is finally revealed?

REVIEW: Book 27 in the series!! And the only previous book I read was book 26!!

I don’t think you need to read the others, it stands alone pretty well, but you get the feeling some of the jokes or meanings are “in house” so if you’ve read them all, you’ll probably get them. And of course it explains her background and livers in more detail.

So …….

Anita is our main character in all the books. It’s told in her perspective (not a big fan, but it’s not a biggie)

We start with Anita getting off a tiny plane, not her idea of fun, but it gets her to her destination of Michigan.

She thinks it’s better not to get involved with the locals and the guy they have locked up. But chatting to him, Anita can’t distance herself, but is that a bad thing? She thinks he’s innocent, and the more time she spends poking around the small town, the more she’s convinced he didn’t do it. But if he didn’t do it, then who did? And why?

There is lots of technical jargon, some of it explained and some of it gets really explained (page filling? You do have to wonder) there is lots of internal monologue (some of it pretty funny) there is also the fact she’s seeing seven other people (from lovers, to fiancées) the group texting made me chuckle, her griping at the fact she needs to text and talk more to the people in her life. She doesn’t mind, but she does feel a little resentment at being told what to do! (Did we need to know that?)

She likes her weapons, there is lots of weapons, there is lots of talking about the weapons.

As we get further into the book, there are a few red herrings to try to catch you out, there are the usual suspects, but only one in jail. My money was on the family members that tried to rob their dead relative.

And what was with one of the deputies, chip on his shoulder or what!!

The marshal Anita teams up with is a great character, Marshal Newman is an old friend of hers, so it was great to read that interaction. The Sheriff in charge was a bit of an idiot, very singleminded and not open to change. It was fun to watch him squirm under Anita’s stare.

Oh and Anita is trying to get married…. she’s marrying Jean-Claude (a six hundred year old vampire) she’d marry Nathaniel and Micah if she could (shifters) but the alternate universe frowns on multiple people marrying! Then we have Edward “Ted” not a sexual partner at all (In fact he got married in the last book and Anita was his “best man”). And what about this Marshall Otto “Olaf” Jeffries?! Creepy guy if you ask me. It goes into a little detail, but I’m assuming there is past history there (don’t think sexual, but you never know with Anita)

So….. a murder mystery story basically.

Well written, very descriptive, and a fast paced read. I didn’t read any characters that didn’t seem unnecessary, they were all well thought out, and I grew to dislike a few of them.

We spend time getting to know the killer, and I really didn’t think he did it. But you’ll have to read it to find out?

And I really liked it. The author drew me in and kept me there until I was done.

Newman dropped Bobby and let him fall to his knees and one hand. The other hand was still chained to the bed and couldn’t touch the floor. Newman went for the door, but I could tell that the heat wasn’t enough yet. Bobby was still fighting his beast, still trying to win control back. I let myself glance at the door. Anthony had her shotgun to her shoulder like she knew how to use it. Leduc had opened the cell door for Newman. He barked an order at the deputy, telling her to put the barrel through the bars, not to hold it outside them. As soon as Newman was in the open doorway, Leduc drew his side‑ arm and aimed it at the fallen man. They had no idea that Bobby was still fighting to stay human. They couldn’t feel it. If I left the cell, they’d just shoot him, and I couldn’t even blame them.
I went to my knees beside Bobby and spoke low. “I’m here, Bobby. I’m right here.”
His yellow leopard eyes stared at me from inches away. His voice came out as a growl. “Get out. Can’t . . . hold it.”
“Get out of there, Blake!” Leduc yelled.
“He’s still fighting not to shift,” I said, but I never looked away from those bright yellow eyes. I touched Bobby’s arm, and his power jumped from him to me. It called my own inner leopard like I knew it would, but I trusted my control. I’d played this game before on both sides of the problem. My energy made his stumble, for lack of a better word.
“Anita, get out of there!” Newman’s voice was urgent. I didn’t look at him. I knew he’d have a gun in his hand by now, too. If I stopped blocking their aim, Bobby Marchand would die.
The man kneeling beside me blinked, his human face showing that he was already losing his words, because leopards don’t think in words.
“Your name is Bobby Marchand. You live in Hanuman, Michigan.”
He stared at me, frowning, as if he knew I was talking to him but in a foreign language that he couldn’t understand.
“Come on, Bobby, I know you’re in there. Talk to me.”
“If he shifts with the door open, we will have to shoot, and friendly fire is a bitch, Blake,” Leduc said from behind me.
“Then close the door.”
“Anita, no!” Newman said.
I just kept looking into Bobby’s face and willed him to answer me. “Bobby is still in there. He’s still fighting to stay human. He doesn’t want to hurt anyone. Do you, Bobby?”
He gave the smallest shake of his head; it was a start. I was so happy that he’d responded that I added my jolt of joy to the energy. It jumped down my hand into him. He shivered and then gripped my arm back where I still held on to him. The energy of our beasts swirled across each other’s skin, and when he blinked at me next, I saw his eyes widen in surprise. He didn’t whisper it, more breathed it out with his lips barely moving. None of the humans at the door heard him say, “Your eyes.”
I blinked and knew that if I’d had a mirror at that moment, my own eyes wouldn’t have been human either. My eyes were the only thing that ever changed for me. To save himself, he couldn’t find his words, but to warn me of danger, to save me, he’d found his human half.
I leaned in close to him, using his body to hide my eyes from the door, because if they saw us both with inhuman eyes, I didn’t know what would happen. No, I did know: They’d shoot us both. Maybe Newman would try to save me, but Leduc would shoot first and sort it out later, and his deputy would follow his lead. I hugged Bobby, resting my face in the bend of his neck on the side opposite the door. It gave him a perfect opportunity to tear my throat out, but I could feel the heat of his beast withdrawing like we’d finally found the knob to turn the oven off. From the doorway, people were yelling just my name or demanding to know what I was doing. But in that second, I knew if I looked back at my fellow officers with leopard eyes, they’d kill us both.
