Description:
Lt. Eve Dallas is about to walk into the shadows of her husband’s dangerous past.

As it often did since he’d married a cop, murder interrupted more pleasant activities. Then again, Roarke supposed, the woman lying in a pool of her own blood a few steps inside the arch in Washington Square Park had a heftier complaint.

When a night out at the theatre is interrupted by the murder of a young woman in Washington Square Park, it seems like an ordinary case for Detective Eve Dallas and her team. But when Roarke spots a shadow from his past in the crowd, Eve realises that this case is far from business as usual.

Eve has two complex cases on her hands – the shocking murder of this wealthy young mother and tracking down the shadow before he can strike again, this time much closer to home. Eve is well used to being the hunter, but how will she cope when the tables are turned? As Eve and the team follow leads to Roarke’s hometown in Ireland, the race is on to stop the shadow making his next move . . .

Review:

Shadows in Death by J.D. Robb is the 51st book in her fantastic Eve Dallas series.  As I have noted many times, I am a big fan of this series, having read every single book, including novellas.  Eve Dallas and her husband, Roarke are the best couple in the literary world; they are so great together, not to mention their wonderful chemistry.  Even though this is the 51st book, I still cannot get enough of them and this series.

Shadows in Death is somewhat different than most of Robb’s stories, as Roarke becomes the center of an old grudge, putting Eve, his Irish family, and himself in danger. Eve is called to the scene of a violent murder of a woman, and as she is in the process of investigating with Peabody, Roarke, who is standing not far away, notices a face he has never forgotten from his Ireland days as a youth. Roarke later tells Eve that this man is the one who killed the woman, as it was his motto, using sharp knives to gut his victims.

Eve, Peabody and their fantastic team, manage to learn that the woman murdered, was a paid hit, and early on we discover who ordered the hit.  Once this person is arrested and offered a small deal to give all information on the hit man, who has committed more than 400 plus deaths worldwide, and has eluded police in all countries for 30 years.  Lorcan Cobbe, is the villain in this story, and his hatred of Roarke becomes his goal to kill Roarke, Eve, and their Ireland family.

What follows is an intense, exciting, action-packed race to find Cobbe, as he continues to kill and threaten them along the way.  What I loved was how all the members of Eve’s police team, were determined to help find the killer, as well as to protect Roarke and Eve.  Over time, Eve has built such a fantastic team and their loyalty was awesome.  I also enjoyed seeing Summerset again, as he knew of this terrible villain back in their Ireland days, also knowing his own life was in jeopardy.  Eve and Summerset still have those fun zingers, loved seeing Galahad.  It was also great to see Nadine, as I miss her.

The last 1/3 of the book was intense, and mindboggling, with the entire team, including the Commissioner, Feeny and Interpol inspector raced to stop the villain from hurting Roarke’s family in Ireland.

Shadows in Death was very exciting, tense, intriguing, nonstop action from start to finish, with never a dull moment.  J.D. Robb once again gives us a fantastic addition to this wonderful series, which I hope keeps on rolling for many years to come.  I thought that Shadows in Death was one of the best ones yet, which proves that J.D. Robb will continue to give us many more Eve and Roarke books.   J.D. Robb created a masterpiece addition to this fantastic series.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 25, 2020

A woman dragged into danger…

Dr. Samantha Park’s life is shaken when her best friend and research partner dies barely two months into their eight-month stretch at the South Pole. She hasn’t begun to face her loss when men from Cobra International Security arrive to recover sensitive military components from a crashed satellite—and ask her to come with them. As a scientist, she has always been suspicious of the military, and flying across Antarctica in austral winter is more like suicide than a rescue mission. But when she hears what’s at stake, she agrees to help and is forced to put her trust in Thor Isaksen, the tall, broad-shouldered Dane who leads the Cobra team.

The only man who can keep her alive…

Thor served as an elite soldier in Afghanistan and spent two years as part of a Danish spec-ops unit patrolling sea ice in the Arctic. He’s used to the cold and constant darkness. That’s why he’s been tapped to lead this mission. Under orders to do whatever he must to keep a dangerous weapon from falling into enemy hands, he’s prepared for every scenario—except one. Samantha, with her blue eyes and brilliant mind, takes him by surprise. She’s confident in her abilities as a scientist and yet so unsure of herself as a woman. Stuck at the station with his team until the weather clears, he can’t ignore the growing attraction he feels for her even if she’s the last thing he should be doing on the job.

A killer who will destroy them all…

As temperatures drop to one hundred below, the heat between Thor and Samantha flares out of control. But a killer is lurking on station, someone with an agenda that threatens not only the lives of every person there, but also global peace. It will take all of Thor’s skill and strength to stop the murderous traitor—and keep himself and the woman he loves alive.

•••••••••

REVIEW: HARD LINE is the fifth instalment in Pamela Clare’s contemporary, adult COBRA ELITE romantic suspense series focusing on the men and women who work for Cobra International Security. This is former Danish spec-ops solider Thor Isaksen, and astrophysicist Dr. Samantha Park’s story line. HARD LINE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Samantha and Thor) HARD LINE follows in the aftermath of a downed military satellite in the remote regions of Antarctica. Thor Isaksen, and several members of Cobra International Security had been tasked with the recovery of the US satellite before it fell into the hands of a potential enemy. Staying at one of the South Pole science stations, Thor would come face to face with astrophysicist Dr. Samantha Park, the woman with whom Thor would fall in love but all was not well at the research station when a young woman dies under mysterious circumstances, and everyone including Samantha become suspect in her death. As Thor and several members of the Cobra Elite team are quickly deputised as US Marshals, an investigation would reveal a killer was closer than anyone could have imagined. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Samantha and Thor, and the potential fall-out as our couple are targeted and left alone to die in the Antarctica cold.

The relationship between Samantha and Thor begins as a working assignment when Thor discovers Samantha was the victim’s best friend. Working together to retrieve the important parts of the military satellite, Thor and the agents from Cobra Elite would encounter a Russian Team hoping to take back what didn’t belong. As Samantha and Thor’s relationship begins to build, Samantha quickly realizes that their relationship comes with an end date, a date coming all too soon. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and animated secondary and supporting characters including several members of the Antarctica mission: site manager Steve Hardin, astrophysicists Greg Martin, Bai Zahang Wei and Kazem Hamidi, Kristi Chang RN, cook Jason Huger, Lance, and coms manager Charli ; Cobra Elite Team members including co-owner Derek Tower, Malik Jones, and Lev Segal; as well as several Russian agents with questionable pasts.

HARD LINE is a story of betrayal, greed, survival, power and control. The premise is intriguing and imaginative; the romance is seductive and provocative; the characters are energetic and spirited. HARD LINE is a startling and energetic addition to the Cobra Elite series.

One by One by Ruth Ware – a Review

One by One by Ruth Ware – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Getting snowed in at a beautiful, rustic mountain chalet doesn’t sound like the worst problem in the world, especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a cozy fire, and company to keep you warm. But what happens when that company is eight of your coworkers…and you can’t trust any of them?

When an off-site company retreat meant to promote mindfulness and collaboration goes utterly wrong when an avalanche hits, the corporate food chain becomes irrelevant and survival trumps togetherness. Come Monday morning, how many members short will the team be?

Review:

One by One by Ruth Ware is another of her exciting suspense thrillers.  One by One is told in two POV’s’, Erin and Liz.  We meet both Erin and Danny at the start, when they are preparing the Chalet (a French Ski Chalet) for the arrival of a group of developers and employees of Snoop.  The company is an app that allows anonymous people who listen to music that celebrities, family, social media are listening to at the same time. Erin handles and takes care of the Chalet, while Danny is the chef.

When the 8 members of Snoop arrive, we learn quickly that Eva, one of the partners, wants to accept a buyout that will make them millions, but Topher, the other partner, wants to keep control of the company and instead sell public shares.  Liz is the only member of the group who no longer works for Snoop, but was asked by Topher to come on the trip, as Liz owns shares of the company. Liz is very quiet, and avoids too much contact with the others, as she knows that both Eva and Topher want her support. There is a division between the 8 people, but they also want to enjoy their stay, and head out to ski.

When everyone returns, they realize that Eva is missing, with a few people thinking they saw her last skiing down a very dangerous mountain.  Within a short time, an avalanche hits, as well as a snow storm, and they are snow bound inside the chalet, suspecting that Eva is dead, especially after the avalanche. From that moment on the story intensifies, as electricity is lost, no Wi-Fi and no telephone to contact the police for help.

Later that evening, another member of the group is found dead, which looks like he was poisoned.  Now the group is down to 6, and everyone looks at one another suspecting each other of being a murderer. Then the following morning someone else is killed, and group is down to 5.  Who is the killer?  One of the assistants leaves in these terrible conditions to find a way to get to the police, before anyone else dies.  Will he survive?

This a classic whodunit, with the guessing game on as to who could be the killer.  This was a wild but fun story, even in this intense time. I did enjoy the whole chalet/ski location, and the desperate change in elements with the loss of power, phone, food, etc.  The last third of the book became a thrilling ride all the way to the climax.  I really liked Erin, as she did her best to keep everyone calm, even when she broke her ankle limiting herself.  Liz was a different POV, as she hated being in the middle.

In a desperate attempt to get help, they divide into three groups; one to trek toward the police, the others to head to the another chalet, and Erin and Liz to stay at the chalet, as both were too injured to travel.

One by One was a terrific, exciting, tense and fantastic ride, as I held my breath so many times, unable to put the book down.  I will not tell too much more, as you really need to read this book to find out what happens and who is truly the real killer.  I suggest you read One by One, which was so very well written by Ruth Ware.

She must race against time to uncover the truth about a catastrophe that will leave the world broken, divided, and at war.

Aurianna just wants answers. But the people need a saviour.

Review:

Dawn Rising by Lisa M. Green is a time travel book and the 1st book in her new Awakened series. Not my usual genre, but I’m always open to new authors and their ideas. The back cover intrigued me, so let’s go…..

People come out of the darkness, we should be scared, they are dangerous. But if captured they can be drained and then killed. But you need to burn the bodies. But who are the people? Are the citizens aware those people are drained and burned? There are lots of questions that need answering.

Aurianna knows she’s different, she doesn’t act the same as other, she can remember when the sun came out, when there was warmth in the air. But now there is only grey days and darkness. I did find Aurianna a little annoying at times, acting like a grown up one moment and then childish.

When a stranger comes to town, she begins to put pieces of a puzzle together. A time traveller, Aurianna is then told she’s the key to a prophecy, she can help the future, but it means she has to go to the past.

Pharis is a traveller, coming to the future is a dangerous thing, no one has come back yet, so it’s all resting on him. Meeting Aurianna didn’t go the way he expected, and trying to convince her to go to the past with him proves interesting.

What happens next is a fast paced race through this book. Going back to the past to change the future, sounds easy right? Wrong! And they have to train Aurianna to use her powers, but I also get the feeling they are leaving a few things out! And what is the darkness? Do Aurianna and Pharis need to be wary of it?

I have to admit i thoroughly enjoyed the book!

First books in a new series need to be finely balanced, too much information and we get stuck, not enough information and it doesn’t keep the readers interest. This had it. And it kept me turning the pages.

But I felt the characters needed a little more work, they felt a little stiff. I know we are in hard times, but there doesn’t seem any lightheartedness. And the like/hate/love between Pharis and Aurianna needed just a tweak, they almost seemed to gel, then they’d lose it.

And we have a twist I didn’t see coming. The ending has you wondering it the next book will start there…..

Eric is more than happy to learn anything Kyle brings to the table. And Kyle never expected their friends-with-benefits arrangement to leave him wanting more. Happily-ever-after might be staring them in the face, but it won’t happen if they’re too stubborn to come clean about their feelings.

Everything they both want is within reach… They just have to be brave enough to grab it.

••••••••

REVIEW: COMMON GOAL is the fourth instalment in Rachel Reid’s contemporary, adult, GAME CHANGERS erotic, LGBTQ, hockey romance series. This is New York Admirals goalie, forty-one year old, Eric Bennett, and twenty-five year old, bartender/ graduate student Kyle Swift’s story line. COMMON GOAL can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary. Kyle and Eric first appeared in book one Game Changer.

NOTE: COMMON GOAL is an age-gap, LGBTQ (MM) romance with graphic scenes of same sex scenarios that may not be suitable for all readers.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Kyle and Eric) COMMON GOAL follows the building romance and relationship between is New York Admirals goalie, forty-one year old, Eric Bennett, and twenty-five year old, bartender/ graduate student Kyle Swift. Eric Bennett is a bisexual man but has only ever had sexual relationships with women. Recently divorced, Eric has thought about his attraction to men but especially his attraction to bartender Kyle Swift, a young man whose obsession with Eric’s teammate Scott is slowly dying since Scott’s engagement to Kyle’s co-worker Kip. Coming out to Kyle, Eric found himself in a friends with benefits arrangement when Eric claimed he had no experience with the same $ex. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Kyle and Eric, and the potential fall-out as Eric struggles with their age-difference.

Eric Bennett is a man close to the end of his professional career, and falling for Kyle Swift left Eric feeling old and tired but with no experience with gay $ex, Eric jumped at Kyle’s offer to teach Eric about $ex with a younger man. Kyle Swift didn’t care about their age difference but in an effort to get to know Eric better, Kyle offered to find Eric a partner but found himself falling in love with our story line hero.

There is a definite lack of communication between both men that exacerbated the proverbial ‘elephant in the room’ especially as it pertained to Eric’s issues with their age difference (ad nauseam), and his need to keep Kyle in the friend zone. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and passionate.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting characters including Scott and Kip (Game Changer #1), Ilya Rozanov (Heated Rivalry #2), teammates Matti Jalo, Carter Vaughan, Kyle’s roommate Maria, and Eric’s friend and gallery owner Jeanette.

COMMON GOAL is a story of secrets, friendships and relationships. The character driven premise inviting and imaginative; the characters are spirited and inspiring; the romance is edgy and spicy. COMMON GOAL looks at the psychological side of coming out but stays clear of the social and professional repercussions that many professional athletes experience following such pronouncement.

ABOUT THE BOOK:Release Date August 25, 2020

I can’t believe I have to go home to Nebraska for my sister’s wedding. I’m gonna need a wingman and a whole lot of vodka for this level of family interaction. At least my bestie agreed he’d man up and help. Too bad he had to catch a different flight than me. Then his plane got delayed. And finally—because bad things always happen in threes—instead of my best friend, his evil twin strolls out of the airport.

If you looked up doesn’t-deserve-to-be-that-confident, way-too-hot-for-his-own-good billionaire in the dictionary, you’d find a picture of Will Holt. He’s awful. Horrible. The worst—even if his butt looks phenomenal in those jeans.

Ten times worse? My buffer was supposed to be there to keep me away from the million and one family events. But Satan’s spawn just grins and signs us up for every. Single. Thing.

Fine. “Cutthroat” Scrabble? I’m in. I can’t wait to take this guy down a notch.

But somewhere between Pictionary and the teasing glint in his eyes, our bickering starts to feel like more than just a game…

REVIEW: If you want a laugh with your read, you can’t go wrong with an Avery Flynn book. I’ve read most of her work, and it always leaves me with a smile.

Written in the third persons point of view. We watch as Haley and Will do battle to see who comes out on top over a family member?

Haley Loves her best friend, but does she have to put up E.T (evil twin) or Mr Obnoxious all the time? He might be a billionaire, he might be the most eligible bachelor, but to Haley, he’s always be annoying. Will thinks that Haley is a gold digger, his twin might be her “best friend” but he knows better, he’s seen her type before, and he’s determined to get rid of her.

When an opportunity presents itself. Will is quick to capitalize on it. But what he gets is turned on his head, Haley is fun, kind and gentle. Did he really get it so wrong? And now Will wants her for himself, can he really do that to his brother?

It’s a laugh a minute, anything and everything that can go wrong does go wrong? Haley’s family is extremely close, and she finds that claustrophobic, she loves them dearly, just not 24/7! Thank goodness her best friend is coming to this wedding to pose as her boyfriend, but fates not that kind, it sends her nemesis in his place! And that’s when the trouble starts.

Will doesn’t think his twin and Haley’s friendship is just that, he thinks she’s after his money, so he’s going to expose her. But spending time with her exposes her not as a fraud, but a kind and caring person. I did have to chuckle, boy did he have a lot of making up to do……

Loved Haley’s family, they were crazy in a good way. Ready to pitch in and help, but they could drive you nuts within minutes! Games night? Was hilarious. Her grandfather was so funny. And when an old boyfriend of Haley’s turns up, is it relief that his brother won’t be fleeced by her or jealousy that it’s not him holding her hand?

So can Will see past his ex taking him for a ride? Can he get past his jealousy of his brother? Well technically Web and not Will have Haley in his life. And when he finds out she really isn’t a gold digger can he apologize and get Haley to forgive him?

I’ve come to love reading anything by this author. I couldn’t put it down till it was done. Highly recommend this book and this author.

REVIEW: SILVER SPOON is the first instalment in Lyz Kelley’s contemporary, adult SILVER FOX RESORT over 40, romance series focusing on the Foster siblings. This is resort manager Zoey Foster, and award winning chef Nate Keller’s storyline.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Zoey and Nate) SILVER SPOON follows the rebuilding friendship and romance between forty-somethings resort manager Zoey Foster, and award winning chef Nate Keller. Zoey Foster has one goal-to reopen her late father’s Silver Fox Resort, and in doing so reuniting her siblings but Zoey never expected to come face to face with her teenage crush, the man who broke her heart, and ripped it in two. As a teen, Nate Keller worked the Silver Fox Resort but falling in love with Zoey Foster was out of his control. Years later life, love, loss and professional success would bring Nate Keller full circle and back to the resort he worked as a boy. What ensues is the rebuilding romance and relationship between Nate and Zoey, and the potential fall-out as Nate’s time at Silver Fox Resort comes to an end.

Nate Keller is only in town for a few weeks but he never expected to be working at Silver Fox Resort when the chef they hired refused to work with the local cuisine. Rekindling his friendship with Zoey Foster meant dredging up the past, a past Zoey knew nothing about. Zoey Foster struggled in the aftermath of her father’s death but battle between head and heart as it pertained to the mother that she accused of abandoning her years before. As Zoey’s relationship with Nate comes with an expiry date, too many heart breaking memories of loss threaten Zoey’s well-contained order and control.

The relationship between Zoey and Nate is a rekindling friendship; a second chance romance that never came to fruition years before. Zoey and Nate have never forgotten about the summers spend together but our heroine never understood why Nate kept his distance and refused to take the next steps into something more.

We are introduced to Zoey’s siblings: Sam (Samantha), Cade, Steel and their mother Victoria, as well as Nate’s father Doug Keller, and Nate’s son Connor.

SILVER SPOON is a story of family, friendships, relationships and love; a story of misunderstand, miscommunication, betrayal and heart break. The character driven premise is sweet, engaging and inviting; the romance is passionate-there are no $ex scenes; the characters are charismatic and animated. SILVER SPOON is a heart warming look at second chances, romance and love.
