ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 27 2020

Being a highly skilled operative for a company like Jameson Force Security is exhilarating and important work…until it comes time to date. I like to keep my profession under wraps for a number of reasons. Some of what we do is top secret, most of what we do is dangerous, and more than one woman has tried to latch onto me because she was more enamored with what I do than who Cage Murdock really is. And since I’m more of a ‘here for the night’ than a ‘here for forever’ kind of guy, what’s the harm in a little white lie about my job?

My harmless deceit has never failed me. Until now. Because I met the most amazing woman and did the unthinkable. I married her. And now my beautiful, unsuspecting, probably-going-to-leave-my-sorry-behind-when-she-finds-out-the-truth wife doesn’t know that I’m not a used car salesman like I told her when we met.

As it typically does with lies, the truth is about to come out in a big way when Jaime unwittingly gets herself mixed up with some unsavory characters and I, along with the team at Jameson, have to intervene. Now I need to save my girl and hope I can save my marriage too. Let’s just say I have some serious explaining to do.

REVIEW:CODE NAME: ROOK is the sixth instalment in Sawyer Bennett’s contemporary, adult JAMESON FORCE SECURITY erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on the men and women who work for Jameson Force Security. This is twenty-eight year old, US Navy SEAL and Jameson Security specialist Cage Murdock, and twenty-six year old, social worker Jaime Dolan’s story line. CODE NAME: ROOK can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty . Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary. CODE NAME: ROOK runs parallel to and crosses over with CODE NAME: GHOST.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Jaime and Cage) CODE NAME: ROOK follows the quick building relationship between twenty-eight year old, US Navy SEAL and Jameson Security specialist Cage Murdock, and twenty-six year old, social worker Jaime Dolan. After returning from his last mission, a mission where they rescued his fellow Jameson Security Agent Malik Fournier, Cage Murdock needed a little down time and found himself at a local bar where he would meet social worker Jaime Dolan. Several hours later, and one night together, Cage knew he wanted something more but our hero lied about his occupation, leaving Jaime to believe he was a used car salesman. Weeks together, and a few days in Vegas, resulted in a spur of the moment wedding to a woman who had no idea about Cage’s real life but all was about to spiral out of control when Jaime would be targeted by the Irish mob, targeted for sins and secrets of someone close. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Cage and Jaime, and the potential fall-out as secrets and lies threaten Cage and Jaime’s happily ever after, and the threats against Jaime become dangerous and deadly.

Cage Murdock was always a bit of a player, and knew when he revealed the truth about his life as a US Navy SEAL, women always saw something different than the man behind the job. Hoping to be accepted as a normal man, Cage lied to Jaime, a lie that was about to snowball out of control. Preparing to tell Jaime the truth, our couple are blindsided when the Irish mafia take our heroine prisoner, demanding money for her life. Jaime Dolan’s last relationship ended with lies and betrayal, and Cage’s lies were too much to bear. Having fallen in love with our story line hero, Jaime is willing to walk away when the truth is revealed.

The relationship between Jaime and Cage begins as a one-night stand that quickly turns into something more but a relationship predicated on a lie is doomed to fail, and Cage struggles with the potential loss of the woman he loves. The $ex scenes are intimate, captivating and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic, language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of energetic and familiar characters including most of the Jameson Security Force family. We are introduced to new agent Ladd McDermott; Jaime’s parents, as well as her sister Laney, and brother Brian.

CODE NAME: ROOK is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and revenge, friendships, relationships, romance and love . The premise is engaging and intriguing; the romance is seductive; the characters are colorful, dynamic and charismatic.

Bane’s Choice (Vampire Motorcycle Club #1) by Alyssa Day – Dual Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
When a centuries-old vampire in search of redemption meets a doctor who’s on a mission of her own, a searing, world-destroying passion is the last thing on either of their minds.

Minds can be changed.

A doctor with secrets of her own is drawn to a dangerous predator in this pulse-pounding paranormal romance from New York Times bestselling author Alyssa Day.

What better way to hide the existence of vampires from humans than in plain sight? Thus, the Vampire Motorcycle Club was born. Bane, the 300-year-old vampire who leads the club, has fought for years to protect his kind. But the truth about vampires is not only that they exist, it is that they are creatures of pure desire. Conscience and restraint has been burned out of them by the process of Turning. Any woman Bane meets is either prey—or food.

Dr. Ryan St. Cloud finds out that vampires exist when one steals her patient out of the hospital right beneath her nose, leading her to question her own sanity. But when the dangerous man whose touch inflames her senses and whose gaze enthralls her comes to her for help, she is unable to refuse. Bane is a dangerous predator, but somewhere beneath his arrogance and power, she can see his heart—and she knows it could belong to her if she is strong enough to claim it. She is bound to a vampire, but loving her would be … Bane’s Choice.

Barb’s Review:

Bane’s Choice by Alyssa Day is the first book in her new Vampire Motorcycle Club series.  I have been a huge fan of Alyssa’s Atlantis series, and I did not know what to expect from this new series. I am happy to say I absolutely loved Bane’s Choice.

Bane, our hero, is a 300-hundred-year-old vampire, who runs Savannah, as well as the Vampire Motorcycle Club; the Club is mostly humans and vampires (though the humans do not know what they are), who help those in need of medicine.  Bane and his sister run the fund raisers to spend money to purchase the medicines for the poor.  When Bane’s human firefighter friend is near death from being seriously burned, Bane kidnaps him from the hospital and to save his life begins the transformation to a vampire.  Before Bane leaves the hospital, he is accosted by a beautiful woman, who threatens him to leave the man alone, as she is a doctor.  When he tries to compel her, he sees that it is not working, and also notices she is glowing a bit.  Who is this woman he cannot control?

Dr. Ryan St. Cloud, our heroine, doesn’t understand when she asks everyone in the hospital to find the patient, only to discover no one has ever heard of this patient (vampires can erase memory). In a short time, Ryan herself is kidnapped and brought to Bane, who cannot get this woman out of his mind; as he begins to feel things for her, especially those he has not had for all these years.

While this is going on, there are evil warlocks and sorcerers who try to do mind control on a group of werewolves to kill and destroy Bane and his team and take over Savannah and all of Georgia.  Bane manages to meet with the werewolf leader to work together to stop the warlocks, as war is on the horizon. Ryan did not understand why she was in this house with Bane, Meara, and their team; to her utmost surprise, they tell her they are vampires, which she laughs off.  But learns quickly that vampires do exist, as do werewolves, warlocks, necromancers and many other paranormal beings.  This was pretty funny when she begins to believe them, and ends up trying to help Bane’s friends, as well as begin to fall hard for Bane, who is already unable to let her go.  The chemistry between them was sizzling, and so much fun to watch them together.  I loved Bane’s team, especially his sister, as Day has created a wonderful group of secondary characters.

Bane was a wonderful hero, who at first was rough and unbending, willing to kill anyone who stands in his way; but once Ryan comes into his life, he is determined to keep the woman who has opened his heart.  Ryan was a very good heroine, independent, smart, savvy and feisty, willing to stand up and fight on her own.  We will learn why she does glow.

Bane’s Choice was a fun, exciting, action filled romantic adventure, with a great couple, and wonderful secondary characters; as well as evil villains.  I look forward to seeing what Alyssa Day has in store for us in the future books.  If you enjoy paranormal romance thrillers, I suggest you read Bane’s Choice.

•••••••••••

Sandy’s Review: BANE’S CHOICE is the first instalment in Alyssa Day’s contemporary, adult VAMPIRE MOTORCYCLE CLUB paranormal, romance series. This is three hundred year old vampire, and VMC president Bane, and physician Dr. Ryan St. Cloud’s story line.

Told from several third person perspectives including Bane and Ryan BANE’S CHOICE follows the building romance between three hundred year old vampire, and VMC president Bane, and physician Dr. Ryan St. Cloud. Bane’s friend Hunter Evans was burned so badly he would never survive but a quick trip to the hospital to bring home his friend, is anything but when Bane comes face to face with Dr. Ryan St. Cloud, and finds himself in a stand off with a feisty woman who may or may not be completely human. Unable to control her mind, Bane quickly realizes that there is much more to Ryan than he could have imagined. Hoping to see Dr. St. Cloud again, Bane sets out to locate the woman that stirs something deep within our story line hero but all is not well in Bane’s territory when warlocks, necromancers, and a group that call themselves the Chamber enter into a battle to take over Bane’s territory. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Bane and Ryan, and the potential fall-out as the fight for Bane’s territory pulls Ryan in as collateral damage.

Ryan St. Cloud is a physician but has no idea that she is something more. Quickly accepting the existence of vampires and werewolves, Ryan’s jump into the supernatural quickly turns onto herself when she defends the man and the family with whom she is falling in love. Bane is the President of the Vampire Motorcycle Club, a biker club hiding in plain sight although a number of their members are only human. Never having fallen in love, Bane is caught off-guard when he meets Dr. Ryan St. Cloud, a woman who is more than she appears to be. Believing Ryan is his fated mate, Bane goes all alpha and over protective but it is Ryan’s power that will that will draw trouble to their front door.

The relationship between Ryan and Bane is one of immediate attraction but Ryan struggled with Bane’s ‘kidnapping’ of her severely injured patient. Unable to explain their palpable sexual attraction, Ryan moves into Bane’s mansion in an effort to stay close to the injured man. As Ryan and Bane’s attraction builds, threats from an outside source release Ryan’s power, and with it the realization about who and what our heroine might be. The Sex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Bane’s family: vampires Meara, Edge and Luke as well as their human housekeepers Mr. and Mrs. C. There is a large assortment of werewolves including alpha Carter Reynolds of the Wolf Pack MC. The requisite evil has many faces including warlocks, necromancer and members of the group known as The Chamber.

BANE’S CHOICE is a story of betrayal and revenge; secrets, magic, power and control. The premise is engaging but struggles between sluggish and energetic; the romance is intimate; the characters are energetic and dynamic-Ryan’s need to call it she sees is often fun and snarky.

I would like to add that the ‘motorcycle club’ aspect of the story line is limited, and definitely not akin to the usual MC story lines. The motorcycle club plot point is negligible, and more of a background element than anything else.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 27, 2020

SOMETIMES IT TAKES ONE BROKEN HEART TO HEAL ANOTHER.

Courtney Winston is a writer on a deadline. Eager to finish her book and get over a recent break-up, she ditches Christmas with her family and retreats to a secluded cabin in the mountains.

Appliances rarely work, and cell service is spotty, but Courtney senses there is more to her rustic rental—something dark and haunting.

Then Peter, the attractive Stone Mountain Lodge owner, and a meddling cook, Mrs. Finn, keep coming around, shattering her peace and offering advice on how to fix her heavy heart.

Courtney grows closer to Peter, but Mrs. Finn warns her of his troubled past. Undaunted, Courtney sets out to win him over. But being with the brooding stranger may end up costing her more than she ever imagined.

REVIEW: THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT by Alexandrea Weis focuses on accountant/ author Courtney Winston in the days prior to the Christmas holiday.

Courtney Winston’s manuscript had been accepted by a big name publisher but in an effort to get the book ready for a new year push, our heroine had to spend the holidays making revisions she didn’t want to make. A secluded cabin in the Smoky Mountains was the ideal spot for our story line heroine but strange noises and even stranger visitors began to push Courtney out of her comfort zone. If not for the frequent visits by a black cat, the lodge owner Peter Morris, and cook Mrs. Finn, Courtney believes she never would have made it through the holidays or finished her book. From Austrian folklore and mythology about tragedy, spirits and the Christmas holidays, Courtney would find herself at a crossroads between the real world, and the ethereal world of spirits and ghosts.

THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT is a story of good vs evil; loss, heart break and romance, hope and love. Alexandrea Weis pulls the reader into a transcendent story of dark and light, spirits and ghosts, love and happily ever after.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 30, 2020

Robots, sex, lies, adventure, and chaos. Who can you trust when you can’t trust yourself? And what truly defines humanity and consciousness?

Running from a violent past, Leo Knox desperately decides to participate in a scientific experiment conducted by the infamous and greedy tech-giant, AlgorithmOS. Soon, Leo learns that she has agreed to take part in a Turing Test, a test that measures the ability of artificial intelligence to blend in among humanity, but what she doesn’t know is that the test set to take place is unlike any other of its kind.

Leo enters Eden, the contained preserve where the test will occur, with twenty-three others. While everyone appears to be human, four of the individuals are an indistinguishably advanced form of humanoid AI. The task is simple: identify the AI while trying to survive. The twist? The four AI are completely unaware of their nature, causing every participant to question what they know as reality.

The group embarks on a journey within the preserve, rigged with obstacles devised by the controllers of the experiment to elicit human response and emotion. Quickly, madness ensues and divides form, partnering Leo up with Avery Ford, a Marine who wears his demons on his sleeve. Romance falls together for the two as the world around them falls apart, revealing the lengths people will go to protect those they love, to achieve monetary gain, or simply to survive.

Back at AlgorithmOS, the story unfolds on the screens of Nathan Aimes, a scientist responsible for monitoring the experiment’s surveillance cameras. Nathan studies the humans involved as they wrestle with where they stand on the polarizing issue of AI and its applications. He watches the AI unknowingly fight to prove their humanity just to leave the experiment unscathed. All the while, Nathan is intimately aware of his company’s plans to weaponize or commodify the AI should they pass the test, and he must reconcile this with the chaos that plays out before him.

REVIEW: SENTIENCE by Courtney P Hunter is a sci-fi story line, set in the not too distant future focusing on a sociological and psychological experiment grouping AI (Artificial Intelligence) with human beings.

NOTE: Due to the graphic nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers

Told from several third person perspectives SENTIENCE follows twenty-four volunteers and recruited participants on a dangerous journey of survival. The tech-giant AlgorithmOS is conducting a closed experiment known as the Turing Test to determine if artificial intelligence is able to integrate into human society without being detected. Unaware of which four of the twenty-four are human or machine, two weeks together will prove that humanity, whether real or artificial, is unable to resist the drive for power. Emotions running high, injuries, murder, the fight for food, issues of trust, and a struggle for control split the group where survival of the fittest plays out on the screens of AlgorithmOS.

The group of twenty include physician and lawyer, prisoner and biker, former service men, teacher, student, priest, dancer, architect ,corrections officer, FBI forensic artist librarian and more. The mixed blend of professionals and ideologies is perfect fuel and fodder to pit man against man, whether real or machine.

SENTIENCE is a haunting, twisted and edgy amalgam of Westworld™, The Hunger Games™ , I,Robot, and Lord of the Flies™. A sociological experiment, of ‘man’s inhumanity towards man’ regardless of the real or perceived, SENTIENCE delves into the perspective of Karl Marx’s Conflict Theory where social order is maintained by power, domination and control. On the flip side, can artificial intelligence be aware, autonomous, conscious or able to distinguish between right and wrong-if they are soulless, will punishment fit the crime if the conscious is not aware?. As AlgorithmOS directs the story line, the end result will prove whether or not artificial intelligence can be programmed to be the ultimate weapon in man’s ability to survive.

Eventually, Wynn and Scarlett become involved but tragedy strikes not once, but twice, threatening to end their relationship before it has a chance to grow and flourish.

Can Wynn and Scarlett overcome overwhelming odds and find lasting love?

Hollywood Enigma is the fifth and final book in the Hollywood Name Game series. Each book in the series is a standalone story that can be enjoyed out of order.

••••••••

REVIEW: Hollywood Enigma is the fifth and final storyline in this marvelous series (The Hollywood Name Game). Like the others, I kept waiting for the interesting and unique storylines to fade…not a bit! This story is as poignant and well done as the others.
This is the story of Wynn (Youngblood) Gallagher and Stephanie Corrigan.

Wynn is called an enigma in Hollywood because he doesn’t join in on the party lifestyle. He keeps pretty much to himself except when shooting his incredibly successful Carbon Man superhero movies or doing the necessary marketing appearances. His parents died in a car crash when he was in college. Betrayed badly, just as he wanted to propose, he doesn’t trust women much, hence he keeps to himself.

His closest contacts are his brother Del and his younger sister, Cady who lost a leg in the car crash that killed his parents (his other brother, Payne, died of cancer a few years prior). His sister handles his social and other personal business, as his assistant.

He has lots of money, due to Del’s legal and financial management of his career. However, he’s bored with the role and fears never getting to do more kinds of roles but getting out of the ironclad contract seems all but impossible. Del told him he needs an entertainment lawyer (Del’s actual field is family law.). Googling entertainment lawyers, Stephanie Corrigan’s name comes up and he likes what he reads about her success. She’s also the sister of Rhett Corrigan, Wynn’s idol. He has donated to Rhett’s charity for years, but never gone to the events. He has Cady pull some strings and accept a late invite, with the stipulation that he sits with Stephanie for dinner.

Stephanie Corrigan is 34. She’s known as a legal shark and has become one of the most successful lawyers in her field. She works at a very prestigious firm, which gives her as many problems as it does money. She dates frequently, but never seems to get close to anyone for more than a short time. However, her biological clock has begun to tick louder recently. All her friends and family are settling down and having families of their own. She wants to have children too and is willing to go it alone if she doesn’t find “Mr. Right” soon. When she sends her latest romance prospect to the curb and gets seated next to Wynn Gallagher at her brother’s charity event, not just sparks but fireworks fly! Yes, she wants to take him on as a client, but the attraction is just too strong to keep it strictly professional.

That’s pretty much the basic setup. There is so much more to all the details of this, but you need to enjoy it for yourself. Enjoy it you will, I promise. There is so much to this final storyline. It has the steamy romance, the wonderful and fun conversations as these two characters find their way to love. As always, tragedy and danger are a part of the package as well. It’s given me tears to know there won’t be more in this series. However, as creative as Alexa Aston is, I’m confident the future will be bright.

REVIEW: ADDICTIVE is the second instalment in KE Osborn’s contemporary, adult HOUSTON DEFIANCE MC erotic, MC romance focusing on the members of the Houston Defiance MC. This is twenty eight year old, club Vice President Talon aka ‘Wraith ‘ , and twenty year old Kharlie aka ‘Prinie’’ Walker’s story line. ADDICTIVE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading book one EXPLOSIVE for back story and history. Some of the timeline of ADDICTIVE runs parallel to and over laps with Explosive-the current time line picks up immediately after the events of book one.

WARNING: Due to the graphic subject matter of the story line premise, there may be some triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Prinie and Wraith) using present day and memories from the past, ADDICTIVE follows the forbidden relationship between is twenty eight year old, club Vice President Talon aka ‘Wraith ‘ , and twenty year old Kharlie aka ‘Prinie Walker. Twelve years earlier, a then sixteen year old Talon escaped a life from h*lll only to find himself struggling to fit in until the day he meets Houston Defiance MC then VP Krew ‘ Zero’ Walker who will take Talon under his wing, introducing him to the family he will come to call his own. Fast forward to present day wherein the tempestuous relationship between Prinie and Wraith reveals a prior history that is about to rain h*ll upon our story line couple but a police raid on the Houston Defiance compound finds Zero taken into custody as the MC members struggle to make sense of it all. With Wraith now the temporary President, our ‘anti-hero’ must take command in an effort to free his friend before there is no life to be freed. What ensues is the building but forbidden relationship between Prinie and Wraith; Wraith’s struggle with demons of the past; and the battle to protect the MC president from the fall-out of a vendetta years in the making.

The relationship between Prinie and Wraith is one of second chances; a forbidden romance wherein Wraith battles the demons that threaten to destroy the woman he loves, and an ‘addiction’ and need to punish anyone who gets in his way. The $ex scenes are disturbing and intense-with emotional and dark scenarios of erotic asphyxiation.

Once again there is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters, most of whom are members of the Houston Defiance MC: Club President Krew ‘Zero’ Walker and his old lady Rayne aka Cherry: Zero and Prinie’s younger brother Koda; Phantom, Liam aka ‘Kevlar’, and his brother Ethan, Fox and Bub, Texas, Neon, Chains and Chills (Dr. Rebecca), and their son Kobe, as well as prospect Luc, and his girlfriend Ruby, and attorney Finley Knight. The requisite evil has many faces.

ADDICTIVE is a dark and gritty story; a heart breaking and emotional tale of a young man whose life was destroyed by the very people who should have loved and protected him. The premise is controversial and dramatic; the characters are broken, struggling, battered and survivors; the romance is energetic and raw.

Rhett Santos keeps his gym as a refuge for his former-military brothers and to sweat out his own issues. He’s ready to let the funny redhead join, but unprepared for the way she wiggles past his hard-won defenses.

When their dog rescue is threatened, the sisters fight to protect it. And they need all the help they can get. As Rhett and Constance slowly open up to each other, they’ll find that no one is past rescuing; what they need is the right person–or dog–to save them.

Review:

Rescue You by Elysia Whisler is a sweet, romantic and emotional story line revolving around rescue dogs. Constance Morrigan, our heroine, helps out her sister, Sunny, who runs a non-profit dog rescue, Pittie Place.  Constance’s main job is as massage therapist, which she is very good at; in her spare time, she will help find dogs that are suffering or treated badly, especially a local kennel who mistreats dogs, even using them as fighting dogs. Sunny, is our second  heroine, since there are two POV’s though out; and despite Constance telling her to be careful stealing the dogs in bad shape, as the woman in charge of the kennel threatens them.  Both were great sisters, always watching each other’s backs, with their heart and soul into helping the dogs.

Constance is still trying to get over her ex-boyfriend dumping her a year ago, and decides to join a fitness gym.  Rhett Santos, our hero, owns Semper Fit gym, who upon seeing Constance, decides to be the one to teach her. Rhett runs a hard-core operation, especially with former military friends, and though she is new to this kind of exercise, he pushes Constance beyond normal.  Constance  finds herself attracted to hunk who takes the time to teach her, and Rhett also begins to have feelings for her; but they both try to keep this strictly as a teacher and student.

Sunny works hard taking care of the dogs, with some good friends, such as Pete (who takes many of them to become service dogs), local doctor (who always help to bring the dogs back to health), and Detective Sean (who makes a deal to help her stop the evil owner of the kennel, as well as having Constance do her massage expertise on his friend, who suffers from injuries in the army).  They all made a great group of characters, who all were determined to help those dogs treated inhumanly. Cruelty to Animals was a major theme in this story.

I loved both Constance and Sunny, and enjoyed to romances that followed for both of them.  I enjoyed Rhett teaching Constance so much stuff in the fitness gym, some of which I thought may have been a bit overkill; though I loved them together.  It was very emotional when they rescued a dog, who was in very bad shape, and afraid to let anyone near him; and I loved Fezzi, Constance’s dog, who had lost a leg.

What follows is a sweet romance, wonderful couples, heartwarming and emotional story, that also becomes suspenseful after threats that put their lives, and the dogs in danger. Rescue You is a story that pulls on so many emotions, as well as finding love and happiness.  If you enjoy stories with great couples and dogs, you need to read this book.  Very well written by Elysia Whisler.

Constance slammed on her brakes. Steam rose from the street as rain gurgled through the ditches. She killed the engine, stepped into the pattering droplets and scanned the shoulder of the road. Nothing there but the remains of a goose carcass. “Where are you, boy?” Constance gave a low whistle.
It hadn’t been her imagination. The picked-over goose only made her more certain she’d seen a dog, weaving through the foggy afternoon air like a phantom. A lost dog, with his head bent against the rain as he loped along the muddy ditch.
Constance whistled again. Silence, but for the sound of rain hitting the trees that lined the road. “Maybe I’m just tired.” She’d done a lot of massages today, which made her feel wrung out. Constance almost ducked back into the van, but halted.
There he was: a white face with brown patches, peeking at her from behind a bush. “Hey, boy.” Constance squatted down, making herself smaller, less threatening. The dog watched, motionless. Constance drew a biscuit from her coat, briefly recalling the cashier’s amusement at the grocery store today when she’d emptied her pockets on the counter, searching for her keys. Five dog biscuits had been in the pile with her phone, a used tissue and the grocery list.
“Dog mom, huh?” the elderly cashier had said.
“Something like that.” More like dog aunt, to all of the rescues at Pittie Place. Her sister, Sunny, had quite the brood.
Constance laid the biscuit near her foot and waited. A moment later, the bush rustled and the dog approached. He had short hair and big shoulders. He got only as close as he needed to, then stretched his neck out for the prize. As he gingerly took the biscuit, Constance noted a droopy abdomen and swollen nipples, like a miniature cow.
So. He was a she. Constance inched toward her. The dog held on to the biscuit, but reared back. Constance extended her fist, slowly, so the mom could smell her. “You got puppies somewhere?”
The dog whimpered, but crunched up the biscuit.
“Where are your puppies?”
The dog whimpered again. Her legs shook. Her fur was muddy, feet caked with dirt. She had blood on her muzzle— probably from the dead goose. By her size and coloring, Constance decided she was a pit bull.
Constance rose up, patted her thigh and headed toward her van. She slid open the side door, grabbed a blanket and spread it out, but when she turned around, the dog was several yards away. Her brown-and-white head was low as she wandered beneath a streetlamp, the embodiment of despair in the drizzle that danced through the light.
Constance followed, slipping on the leaves that clogged the drainage ditch. The dog glanced once over her shoulder, but her pace didn’t quicken. Constance decided her calm demeanor was working, keeping the dog from fleeing. And let’s be honest: the biscuit hadn’t hurt. Chances were, the dog would be happy to have more as soon as she got wherever she was going. “Let’s see where you’re headed, then. Show me if you’ve got a home.”
Constance followed her across the road, around the curve and down the narrow lane. Frogs popped like happy corn all over the slick street, but the chill of the oncoming winter slithered through Constance’s blood.
She followed the dog for a good quarter mile. Even before she hooked a left down the unpaved road hidden behind the trees, Constance had figured out that the mama was headed to one of the handful of empty places that sat decomposing on the hundred or so acres the Matteri family owned. Constance paused only long enough to squelch the sizzle of anger that bubbled up inside before she pressed on, determined to know if the dog was a stray or a neglected mother from Janice Matteri’s puppy mill.
Constance took the same turn and watched as the dog neared the abandoned house up ahead. Nobody had lived there in years. It was only a matter of time before it became condemned. The dog bypassed the crumbling porch of the old colonial and went around back. Constance knew little daylight was left, and she hadn’t brought a flashlight. She broke into a trot, clutched her coat tighter around her and didn’t slow until the dog came back into view. Constance followed her, her heart thumping harder with each step.
The dog passed the rusted chain-link fence and disappeared over a rise in the property, near an old shed so overgrown with trees it was only recognizable by a pale red door. Just as she reached the hill, Constance heard a squeak. The sort of high-pitched noise that echoes from everywhere and nowhere all at once. Another squeak came. And another. She crested the hill and saw the dog slink inside the shed door. Constance got to the shed and pushed inside. The dog had reached her destination: a battered old mattress, three shades of brown, lying a few feet inside. The mewls, now loud and hungry, came from a shredded section of the mattress.
Constance narrowed her eyes. At first, she counted only two bobbing, brown heads, but as she drew closer there was a third. Then a fourth. The last one didn’t move nearly as much, just sort of waded on his stomach. The puppies had cocoa-colored fur and black muzzles. Eyes open. The ones that moved didn’t really walk, just stumbled into each other, like drunks. Mama dog curled around them and they all wiggled toward her abdomen.
Constance knelt down next to the mattress and watched the suckling puppies. She decided they were about two weeks old. The air in the shed smelled of sour milk, poop and urine. She dug out another biscuit and reached, slowly, her hand in a fist to protect her fingers, her gaze on the mama for any sign she was upset, such as pinned ears, bared teeth or a raised ridge of fur down the back. The energy around the mom and her pups was calm, to the point of exhausted. Constance had certainly helped with enough of Sunny’s dogs over the years to know. She offered the biscuit and the mom took it. With her mouth busy, Constance carefully touched the smallest puppy, who shook so hard the tremble came from deep inside, beneath his skin and fur, straight from his bones.
Constance rose slowly and did a quick search of the vicinity for more puppies, which turned up nothing but trash, vermin and an old orange crate, which she brought over to the mattress.
Now to see if Mom was going to accept help.
Though daylight was precious, Constance waited until the pups were done suckling before she offered a third treat. “Let’s go back to my place,” Constance said as Mom accepted the biscuit. “My sister has a rescue for critters, just like you. And I help her all the time. You’ll be safe there. Does that sound okay?”
While Mama crunched, Constance reached for the two pups closest to her and, keeping an eye on Mom the whole time, she lifted them and settled them in the crate. Mom’s chewing quickened, so Constance acted fast, lifting the last two pups swiftly but carefully. She rose to her feet, crate in her arms. The mother dog was on her feet almost ahead of her, pointing her muzzle at the crate and whining.
Constance knew the mom would follow her anywhere she took those pups, but she also lacked any signs of aggression, almost as though she knew that this was their only chance. Or as Pete, owner of Canine Warriors and Constance’s longtime childhood friend, would put it, “You just got something about you, Cici. Everybody trusts you. People. Dogs. The damn Devil himself.”
Constance headed back to her van, chasing the sunset. As expected, the mother followed. Once to the vehicle, Constance opened the van and set the crate full of pups next to the blanket she’d spread out earlier. The mama dog leaped in after them.
Constance slid the door closed, settled behind the steering wheel and let out a great sigh. Mission accomplished. She edged down the long, lonely road. The rain pattered on the windshield and the scent of dirty puppies hit her nose. She’d take them home tonight and get them settled in, see how they reacted to a new environment, then text Sunny in the morning. Constance had worked with enough dogs, and people, to know that introducing another new person this evening was bad news. Let Mama get used to Constance first, and get some good food and rest, before she was moved to Pittie Place.
Tonight, at least, this girl and her babies belonged with Constance.

Ava Callahan.

Love of my life.

Wrecker of my soul.

I would have sworn on anything that what we shared was real.

But she broke my trust. And then my heart. I don’t think I can piece it back together without her, but I’m sure gonna try.

I’m better off on my own, anyways, right? Who needs girls when you have football?

If only I believed that. Look, when you need someone in your life, you don’t want to let her go. And I can’t let go of Ava. I love her. She loves me. Nothing can convince me otherwise. It’s as simple as that. I know no matter what, this girl belongs to me. We may have issues, but we’re meant to be. So I’ll do whatever it takes to get her back.

Even if I have to fight dirty.

REVIEW: MEANT TO BE is the fourth instalment in Monica Murphy’s contemporary, young adult THE CALLAHANS erotic, romance series focusing on the second generation of the Callahan family; and the second half of sixteen year old, Ava Callahan and seventeen year old, Eli Bennett’s story. MEANT TO BE should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the events and cliff hanger of ADDICTED TO HIM (The Callahans #3).

NOTE: MEANT TO BE is a young adult story line ( characters under eighteen years of age) with adult sexual situations that may not be suitable for more younger readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Ava and Eli) MEANT TO BE follows in the aftermath of what Eli Bennett believes is a betrayal by the young woman with whom he has fallen in love. Eli’s family life is a mess but he never expected the world to be witness to their embarrassing fall-out. Blaming Ava sends our heroine down a rabbit hole of disbelief pushing Ava to discover the who and how of what happened and why. As Ava and Eli’s relationship is threatened by outside sources, Eli’s acrimonious relationship with Ava’s brother Jake continues to fester and draw ire from family and friends. What ensues is the continuing and building romance and relationship between Eli and Ava, and the potential fall-out as issues of jealousy, family dynamics, and competition between opposing football teams both on and off the field, threaten Eli and Ava’s tenuous hold on their already struggling relationship.

Ava Callahan has it all but believes herself to be the black sheep in a family of successful athletes and stars. The requisite mean girls push our heroine over the edge, and Ava finds herself on the outside looking in when she has finally had enough. Her relationship with Eli is fodder between friends and enemies, and in this Ava’s brother Jake struggles with his sister’s love for a boy he doesn’t deem worthy but all is not well in the Bennett household, and the fall-out begins to affect the young man Ava loves.

The relationship between Ava and Eli is one of the forbidden. Ava’s parents are not thrilled with Eli’s reputation, a reputation fuelled by her brother’s hatred and distrust of a young man whose family life is spiralling out of control. Eli’s reputation both on and off the football field has followed our young hero into his relationship with Ava Callahan, and in this Eli tries to prove he is worthy of Ava’s love. The $ex scenes are intimate, passionate and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful energetic and charismatic secondary and supporting characters including Fable and Drew Callahan, Owen and Chelsea McGuire (One Week Girlfriend series): Jake and Hannah (Falling For Her #2), Autumn and Ash (Close to Me #1); Ava’s best friend Ellie; Jake’s ex-girlfriend Cami, and rival football players Diego, Wyatt, Jackson and Caleb. The requisite mean-girls continue to be all up in Ava’s face.

MEANT TO BE is a story of family, friendships, and relationships; a story of rivalry and competition, of heart break and love. MEANT TO BE is a young adult story line with all of the requisite YA plot points including mean girls, jealousy, sex, drugs, drinking and fights. The premise is captivating : the romance is tender and seductive; the characters are young and struggling to come into their own.

Can you die from a broken heart? Not asking for a friend.
The street is empty. Eli is long gone. I clutch my phone in my hand so tight, my fingers cramp up. He won’t respond to my texts or my calls. He’s ghosting me.
Pain radiates from my chest, a constant, throbbing reminder that Eli just destroyed me with a few choice words. He doesn’t believe me. Worse, he doesn’t trust me. I never told my brother about his parents. I don’t know who did. Eli may have hinted at things and flat out told me his mother drank too much, but he never talked about his dad cheating. And why would I tell Jake any of that?
There’s no way I ever would.
So who did?
I make my way to the backyard to find my entire family is gone. Glancing toward the kitchen windows, I see they’re inside. Waiting for me. My parents and Jake, who’s sitting on a barstool at the counter with a glower on his freshly abused face. It serves him right that Eli got a few punches in. I don’t even feel bad that it happened, though I suppose I should.
Mom catches my gaze and raises her brows, the look on her face plainly telling me, get in here.
If I could turn around and run away, I would. I’d run and run and run until I was out of breath and so, so far, no one could find me again.
But I don’t move. I definitely don’t go inside. Not yet. Dad says something to Mom, and I can tell they’re having a minor argument. About me? I wonder if she told Dad about our little secret. How she knew about Eli and I dating.
My gaze sweeps over the scene of the crime, AKA the spot where Jake and Eli fought. The moonlight catches on something on the ground, making it glint and I kneel down, reaching toward the shiny piece. My fingertips touch cool metal and I grasp it between my fingers.
A gold #1 pendant. Eli’s. I feel around for the chain, almost desperately, on my hands and knees, but I don’t see it. I wonder if he knows he lost it. I’m sure he’ll be upset. He loves this necklace and the fact that his father gave it to him.
But would he want to know I have it?
Maybe.
Maybe that’ll be my one way to reach out to him. I have something he wants.
Unfortunately, from the way everything just went down, it’s not me.
“Ava!” I lift my head to find my mother standing in the open doorway of the kitchen, her expression somber. “Come inside. Now.”
Rising to my feet, I clutch the pendant in my palm and march toward my punishment. I hang my head as I enter the kitchen, not wanting to look at any of them. Especially Jake. His anger radiates off of him, all of it aimed straight at me. Mom closes the door but, otherwise, says nothing. Neither does Jake. Or Dad.
It’s a very uncomfortable silence full of thick tension that seems to last ten minutes, but is probably more like thirty seconds before my dad can’t take it any longer.
“Ava.” His tone is firm, yet gentle. He’s mad, but he doesn’t want to show it. “Tell me what Eli Bennett was doing at our house at this time of night.”
Jake snorts. “What do you think—”
“Enough,” Dad says, silencing my big brother.
This gives me immense satisfaction. Lifting my head, I meet my father’s gaze head on. “We’re together. Well…we were.”
