Description:
She’s dying, and she knows it. If only she can stay alive long enough to leave one last message. As the rain beats against the metal roof, she uses her blood-soaked fingertip to scrawl on the floorboards… The letters GB.

Detective Madison Knight has been house hunting, but a call from her real estate agent has nothing to do with finding the perfect property. She’s found a woman’s body, stabbed multiple times. Madison arrives on scene and is presented with an unknown Jane Doe and two letters written in blood. There’s no murder weapon, and it seems Doe was attacked somewhere else.

As Madison works to find justice for the victim, Madison’s own life is put at risk. What she comes to discover is some people will go to extreme lengths to protect their secrets—even as far as murder. But will learning that lesson come too late for her?

Review:

What We Bury by Carolyn Arnold is the 10th book in her Detective Madison Knight Mystery series.  As noted, many times in previous books, Carolyn Arnold always gives us exciting suspenseful murder mysteries, lead by a great detective like Madison Knight; and Arnold’s knowledge of police procedurals makes these investigations perfect.

Madison, our heroine, is a tough detective, who will let nothing stand in her way to find the guilty, as well as trying to find proof of corrupt police officers within the Stiles Police Department.  Madison is called by her real estate agent friend that a body was found in the garage. When she arrives with her partner, Terry, they discover the body of a female, stabbed multiple times, and no identity on her; the only clue is the initials of GB written in blood by the victim before she died.

While working on this case, Madison is also having problems with her boyfriend Troy, whom she has been waiting impatiently for him to propose with a ring.  At the same time, she alienates both Troy and Cynthia (her best friend), since she suspects some of their detective friends possibly working with the Russian Mafia. A few times while working on her case, she finds her life threatened, even suffering serious injuries that keep her from her case; Terry steps up to work on the case, keeping Madison on top of things.  Once she is released from the hospital, she does push herself too much, but together with Terry they will discover a number of twists and turns that changes the game.

What follows is an exciting, tense, action filled thriller with many suspects, twists, as well as Madison finding true love with Troy.  I also love her friendship with Cynthia.  I could not put the book down; especially with new developments changing constantly.  This story was very exciting and well written.  If you enjoy mysteries, murder cops, police procedurals and a tough as nails cop, then you need to be reading this series.

REVIEW:WHEN HE’S DIRTY is the first instalment in Lisa Renee Jones’ contemporary, adult WALKER SECURITY: ADRIAN erotic, romantic suspense trilogy focusing on former undercover FBI Agent and Walker Security specialist Adrian Mack aka Ramos and ADA Priscilla Miller. WHEN HE’S DIRTY can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments and connecting series is revealed where necessary. Several characters cross-over for cohesion and familiarity.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Adrian and Priscilla) WHEN HE’S DIRTY follows Adrian Mack, in the weeks prior to the testifying against the Texas Kings biker club, a club in which he was undercover for close to two years. Assistant District Attorney Priscilla Miller has been assigned the case against Nick Waters aka The King Devil but with the witnesses and people who will be testifying dying or disappearing, Priscilla is desperate to get Adrian Mack on her side. Unaware as to the true extent of Adrian’s sins while working alongside the ultimate evil, Priscilla is willing to offer complete immunity in exchange for his eye-witness testimony. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Adrian and Priscilla, and the potential fall-out as our couple are unable to trust the people involved including the DA, the FBI, and any number of assistants and attorneys who may or may not have already been compromised.

The relationship between Priscilla and Adrian begins as a lie when Adrian presents himself as someone else. Not willing to go agree to testify until his team at Walker Security has completely vetted and investigated our story line heroine, Adrian begins a slow seduction of the woman with whom he has pledged to protect with his life. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

WHEN HE’S DIRTY has a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting characters including Blake Walker from Walker Security; Rick Savage (The Savage Trilogy); a well as Walker Security agents and former members of SEAL Team six- Lucifer, Lucas, Asher and Adam; District Attorney Ed Melbourn , FBI Agent Kirk Pitt, ADAs Cindy, Grace; Priscilla’s ex fiancé Logan Michaels; Nick Waters and his right-hand man Jose Deleon.

WHEN HE’S DIRTY is a story of murder and corruption; sins and secrets; relationships and friendships; trust and lies. The fast paced and character driven premise is dramatic, intriguing and inviting ; the characters are animated, intelligent and spirited; the romance is intimate, provocative and seductive. WHEN HE’S DIRTY ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned

I exit the bathroom and halt to find him standing in the doorway, his hands on either side of the doorframe. “What are you doing?”
“This,” he says, and suddenly, his hands are on my waist, and he’s walked me back into the bathroom.
Before I know what’s happening, he’s kicked the door shut, and his fingers are diving into my hair. “Kissing you, because I can’t fucking help myself. And because you might not ever let me do it again. That is unless you object?”
That’s the part that really gets me. The “unless I object,” the way he manages to be all alpha and demanding and still ask. Well, and the part where he can’t fucking help himself.
I press to my toes and the minute my mouth meets his, his crashes over mine, his tongue doing a wicked lick that I feel in every part of me. And I don’t know what I taste like to him, but he is temptation with a hint of tequila, demand, and desire. His hands slide up my back, fingers splayed between my shoulder blades, his hard body pressed to mine, seducing me in every possible way.
I moan with the feel of him and his lips part from mine, lingering there a moment before he says, “Obviously, someone needs to protect you from me,” he says. “Like me.” And then to my shock, he releases me and leaves. The bathroom door is open and closed before I know what’s happened. And once again, I have no idea if or when I will ever see him again.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 27, 2020.

Macon Brady remembers every moment he lay on the ground, a bullet in his chest, his life bleeding out with each pulse. Yet his nightmares aren’t the only thing keeping him up at night.

Dakota Bristol left her ex with nothing but the clothes on her back and her child in her arms. She’s been hurt before and wants nothing to do with the shadows in Macon’s eyes. The problem? Her son loves him, and the more time she spends with the man, the more she’s afraid she’ll come to love him just as much.

Danger always comes back to haunt those who run. It was a lesson Dakota learned before. Now, it might be the man she refuses to fall for who makes the greatest sacrifice of all.

REVIEW: Far From Destined is the third book in The Promise Me series by the lovely Carrie Ann Ryan and what a tearjerker it is. Far From Destined can be read as a standalone, but I do think reading the first two in the series will help the reader understand the characters and also give them the back story so they may understand where the current book starts.
I have been loving this series, I love the sisterhood the pact sisters have and don’t even get me started on the Brady Brothers. We see more of previous characters from past books, which is always super interesting, seeing what they are up to. The more I read this series, the more I wanted from it.

Macon Brady.

Brooding veterinarian, survivor of bullet wounds and all-time alpha male with a soft spot for family and friends. Macon is troubled, dealing with the aftermath that comes with the scar on his chest, he takes to the one thing that helps; boxing.

Dakota Bristol, single mother and small business owner is trying to give her young son the best life she can. She has good friends that have become family, and now it’s her turn. The Blind date pact is upon her, and she won’t go back on her promise. Her pact sisters have found their partners in the Brady family, and they want her to find hers there as well. In Macon.

Macon the man that her son is clinging to, the man who looks good enough to eat and a lover of all thing’s animals. Too bad all they seem to do is snip at each other whenever they are in ear reach. Both characters have been through so much, each has their own fears to work through as the story lines progresses. Macon gets under Dakota’s skin and it turns out, she likes him there. When Dakota’s past, in the form of her abusive ex makes an appearance, Macon will stop at nothing to keep his new family safe.

Wow! Carrie Ann Ryan out did herself in this one. Today’s generalizations of men teach them not to show emotion, to not let a weakness show, they must never be weak. Carrie Ann Ryan chucks that out the window with the Brady Brothers. You feel everything that Macon is going through, the nightmares and the fear. It’s a great story, with even better characters and story line I can’t wait to see fulfilled. I can’t wait to see Myra and Nate, and Pop, I LOVE her! Four and a half stars for this glorious read!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 23, 2020

One year ago, I buried my husband.

One year ago, I held his hand and said goodbye.

Now I spend most of my days lost somewhere between trying to remember every smallest detail of our lives, and trying to forget it all. I fill my hours with work until I’m too exhausted to remember him, to feel anything at all.

One year, 365 days—and then one knock at my door changes everything. A letter from him, a last request, a secret will:

My dearest Nadia,

Trust me, my love. One last time, trust me. Sometimes the epilogue to one story is the beginning of another.

••••••••

REVIEW:THE CABIN by Jasinda Wilder is a contemporary, adult, stand alone story of romance focusing on three people: novelist Adrian Bell, and registered nurse Nadia Bell, and carpenter Nathan Fischer.

Told from three first person perspectives (Adrian and Nadia Bell, and Nathan Fischer) THE CABIN focuses on dying, death, grief and living. Adrian Bell had only months to live and in an effort to protect his wife, hid his illness until the very end. In preparation for his wife’s inevitable grief, Adrian maps out the beginning of her future beginning with a cabin in the woods, and a journey towards a second chance at love and a happily ever after.

THE CABIN is an emotional, heart breaking, real and raw story of life and death; tragedy and vulnerability; grief and acceptance. It is also a story of friendships, relationships, family and love. Jasinda Wilder pulls the reader into a captivating, absorbing and visceral tale where death is not always the end but often the beginning of something new.

1: NDA
“All right, Mr. Bell. You’re all set here, I think.”
The nurse is that peculiar, unique brand of brusque efficiency and Zen-like kindness you only find in an oncology department. She fiddles with the IV line puncturing my left arm, the off-white, veiny medical tape securing it to my forearm. Her eyes are brown, the exact shade of a chocolate Labrador’s fur. She is warm, and caring, but lurking beneath that veneer of caregiver kindness is the detached iciness of someone whose job it is to watch people die.
“It will take a couple hours for this to drip through, and then we have to monitor you for—”
“I know,” I interrupt. I open the lid of my laptop. “I’ve been through this a few times.”
She smiles. “Of course, Mr. Bell. If you need anything, just press the call button.”
I hesitate a few seconds and then say, “There is something.” Then I glance at the curtain which is not quite pulled shut.
She catches my meaning and brings the two ends of the curtain together, the metal rings rasping with a rattling ring. “What can I do for you, Mr. Bell?”
I reach into my messenger bag, sitting on the floor next to this monstrosity of a chair—a freakish, Frankensteinian thing, not quite a lounger and not quite a clinical, medical device, but something in between. It’s made from a rubbery plastic or vinyl material that squeaks at every slight movement, and is too hard and too upright to be truly comfortable, but when you kick back in it and lift the footrest, it forces you into a near-horizontal recline in an unnatural defiance of gravity.
The chair is distracting, and I hate the chair almost as much as I hate the ward, the IV, and the whole damned morbid circus.
In my bag is a thin manila folder. On the label I’ve written three letters in neat block handwriting, in black Sharpie: NDA. I withdraw a single sheet of paper, on which are two and a half paragraphs, single-spaced. It’s in tight, clear legalese, drawn up by my attorney, printed on formal, intimidating letterhead. I hand it to the nurse whose nametag, clipped to her pale green sleeve, announces her as Tiffany Snell, R.N, O.C.N.
“This is an NDA, a nondisclosure agreement.”
She allows a frown, briefly. “Okay?”
I keep my voice low, not whispering, but pitched for her ears only. “I’m here alone, as I’m sure you’ve noticed.”
“Yes. Which is why your observation period has to be so long.”
“I know.”
I reach into my bag and pull out a pen—it’s a nice pen, hefty, metal, with a satisfying clicker, and on the side is my name: Adrian Bell, and my logo, a coat of arms with my monogram. It’s recognizable to most people, that logo; you see it on the title page of my books, on my website, and expensively animated as a production company logo during the title sequences when you watch movies made from my books. I hand her the pen, tap the NDA with it.
“This says you will not disclose to anyone that I was here at all, let alone why. I’m paying for this with cash, so there’s no insurance paperwork trail.”
She frowns again as she reads. “Why is it a secret, may I ask?”
“I have my reasons,” I say. “Whatever else must be done in the process of this infusion, I would like you to do, including observation and my eventual discharge. All right? This means that just one person has to sign this little item.” I tap the NDA again.
“And if I don’t sign it?” It’s not meant belligerently, just…a simple question.
I smile. “Tiffany—Miss Snell. Do I really need to spell this out? You know who I am. I don’t want this getting out. That’s all. I’m protecting my privacy.”
She breathes out gently—it’s not a sigh, more of a thoughtful breath. “What about your wife? Why isn’t she here?”
It takes all I have to not wince at the question. “I’m going to have to decline to answer that, Miss Snell. Can you please just sign? It just means you don’t tell anyone I was here. If coworkers ask, you simply say you can’t talk about it. Don’t make a big deal about it, just that—I can’t talk about it. That’s all.” I pause, smile again. “Would it help you to know I’m a yearly donor to this facility?”
She rolls a shoulder. “Not really. I’m just a nurse.” Another of those thoughtful out-breaths. “Mr. Bell, I’ll sign your NDA. But I have to register my thoughts with you. Hiding this is not fair.” Her warm brown eyes momentarily reveal the sadness she normally keeps hidden. “I’ve seen your file, obviously. What you’re dealing with, it’s…it’s not…”
“It doesn’t have a stellar survival rate,” I finish. “I know.”
“Hiding it from your wife, Mr. Bell—”
“Adrian.”
“It’s really, really not fair of you, Adrian. You’re not doing her any favors. I obviously don’t know a thing about your marriage, but if she loves you—”
I let out a shaky breath, cut her off. “She does, Tiffany. More than I deserve. More than…More than is, perhaps, healthy.”
“So why—”
“I have my reasons,” I say again. Now I do not smile. I frown in a way that says this conversation has to be over. “It’s not fair of me, I know. Believe me, I know. But it’s not fair that I have this. That I’m here. It’s not fair that I’m paying as much for this treatment as I am. What in your life can you list as unfair, Tiffany? A lot, I’m sure. Fair is a myth. Fair does not exist.”
She gazes at me evenly, steadily and then takes the pen from me. Signs the NDA in a nurse’s hasty scrawl. Dates it. Hands me the pen.
“Keep it.”
She lets a small smile cross her lips. “I’ve read all your books, you know. I enjoy them. They make me feel like I can believe in love again.” She gestures with the pen. “Thank you.”
“If you happen to have a copy with you, I’ll sign it for you.”
She bites a lip. “I do, actually.”
“Bring it when you come to check on me.”
She nods, hooks the pen by the clip at an angle in the V of her scrub top. Smiles at me again, and leaves.
You catch more flies with honey than vinegar, my mother used to tell me.
I enter the passcode on my laptop; there’s Wi-Fi here, so I could check email, but I don’t. In fact, I turn Wi-Fi off, so I won’t be distracted by the siren song of email, pull my wireless earbuds from my bag, and turn on Rostropovich via my phone.
I open my manuscript. Close my eyes, take a deep breath, hold it, and let it out slowly. Repeat four times. Pushing away, mentally, the fog of the chemo, the pinch of the IV, the continual beeping of IV machines indicating a bag is finished, the occasional static PA announcements, the squeak of sensible sneakers, and the murmur of quiet conversations.
Push it all away. Find my flow.
It’s there, under the surface. It’s always there; it’s always been there. Like Louis L’Amour said, I could sit in the middle of Sunset Boulevard with a typewriter on my knees, and once I’m in the flow, I wouldn’t notice a thing but the words on the page.
With this story I’m working on now, though, it’s harder, and it takes more effort to sink down into it, more mental gymnastics to get into the flow. I need to find the right balance, tap into the necessary emotions, while still remaining the objective storyteller.
This one is personal. More than all the other books I’ve written over my career, this one…this one requires more of me.
And I have to get it right.
I’m writing it for an audience of one. Well, two. But really, just one. Her.
My love. My Nadia.

Crazy Stupid Bromance by Lyssa Kay Adams – a Review

Crazy Stupid Bromance by Lyssa Kay Adams – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM /

Description:
Alexis Carlisle and her cat café, ToeBeans, have shot to fame after she came forward as a victim of a celebrity chef’s sexual harassment. When a new customer approaches to confide in her, the last thing Alexis expects is for the woman to claim they’re sisters. Unsure what to do, Alexis turns to the only man she trusts—her best friend, Noah Logan.

Computer genius Noah left his rebellious teenage hacker past behind to become a computer security expert. Now he only uses his old skills for the right cause. But Noah’s got a secret: He’s madly in love with Alexis. When she asks for his help, he wonders if the timing will ever be right to confess his crush.

Noah’s pals in The Bromance Book Club are more than willing to share their beloved “manuals” to help him go from bud to boyfriend. But he must decide if telling the truth is worth risking the best friendship he’s ever had.

Review:

Crazy Stupid Bromance by Lyssa Kay Adams is the 3rd book in her fun Bromance Book Club series. I enjoyed the first two books in this series, and I thought Crazy Stupid Bromance was equally as much fun and possibly better.  This is always a fun series to read, as it centers around a male book club group of mostly athletes, and how they discuss romance novels and teach their buddies how to handle women with care and love.

Alexis Carlisle, our heroine, has opened a successful café, ToeBeans, which not only serves good food, but Alexis makes sure to offer help to people who need it, as well as having cats.  You will certainly fall in love with Beefcake, Alexis’s loving cat, except for when there is a man in the house.  No purring, but pure torture. Lol   When her friend, Noah is in Alexis place, playing games or watching tv, Beefcake always manages to torture him.

Noah Logan, our hero, is Alexis’s best friend.  They both enjoy each other’s company, and their friendship; neither of them wants to ruin things with adding any benefits.  Noah gets pressured by his book club friends, who try to push him to read a book, to learn how to get Alexis to recognize their true feelings.

This story centers on both Alexis and Noah, and a surprise shock, when Alexis gets a visitor to her café.  Turns out the visitor is an unknown half-sister, that Alexis did not know about, as well as learning that the sister has a father, who happens to be Alexis’s father, whom she never knew.  Alexis immediately learns the truth; her father is dying and needs a kidney transplant.  Can Alexis be a match?  If so, would she consider giving one of her kidneys to a man she never knew?

I loved Noah and Alexis together.  They were so good, as friends, and eventually as lovers.  The best part of the story is always the guys, who try to teach Noah how to seduce her and let her know his feelings.  The purpose is for each of them to keep their relationships with their wives/girlfriends strong and healthy. They are all a funny and great group of Hunks and the spa was a riot. With Mack and Liv’s (previous book couple) wedding upcoming, Mack pushes all the guys to learn how to dance and perform like the women do, but this time it will be the men.  Lots of laughs and fun.

What follows is a fun, as well as serious story line, with a great couple that we loved from the start.  Both Noah and Alexis have their own family issues from the past, but Alexis had it harder, having never heard about her father, and his family; though when her mother died a few years ago, she did try to use DNA to find him.  This was a good part of the serious story, with her father, and his family that was also shocked, as only the half-sister found Alexis and kept it a secret until she brought her to meet the family.  It was difficult for all, but Alexis rises up.

Crazy Stupid Bromance was humorous, fun, romantic, with a great couple and fabulous Alpha men that had me laughing often.  Lyssa Kay Adams did a wonderful job writing this fun story, which you need to read.  I know I will be waiting for the next book in this series.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 27, 2020

A man hiding from his nature

Henry Flanders never dreamed his past would catch up to him. After all, the man he used to be is dead and buried. He made a clean break with life in the CIA. He moved to Bliss under a new name. Life is perfect, or rather it was until a violent cartel showed up in Bliss ready to reap their bloody vengeance on the man he used to be.

Henry isn’t willing to give up on his life with Nell, but it’s going to take some Bliss magic to overcome the forces pulling them apart. REVIEW:HAPPILY EVER AFTER IN BLISS is the eleventh full-length instalment in Lexi Blake’s contemporary, adult NIGHTS IN BLISS, COLORADO erotic, BDSM, romantic suspense series focusing on the small town of Bliss, Colorado. This is the continuing story of former US army soldier/former CIA operative turned history professor John Bishop aka Henry Flanders, and his wife Nell Flanders . HAPPILY EVER AFTER IN BLISS can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading ONCE UPON A TIME IN BLISS for Henry and Nell’s backstory.

SOME BACKGROUND: Nell Flanders is an idealist; a naïve dreamer; an optimist who is hoping to change the world one protest at a time. A vegan, a pacifist, a woman who believes that even little white lies are unacceptable in the grand scheme of peace and unity. John Bishop is a former US army soldier/former CIA operative turned history professor who now identifies as Henry Flanders but Henry is always on the offensive knowing his past is always one step behind

Told from dual third person perspectives (Henry and Nell) HAPPILY EVER AFTER IN BLISS fast forwards Nell and Henry’s life approximately six years wherein Henry’s past is about to destroy any semblance of peace for our story line couple. Now pregnant with their first child, Nell Flanders has no idea about the life her husband once led, and with the past now intent of destroying their lives, Nell is no longer sure if the man that she loves, is the man with whom she will continue her life. With both the CIA, and the Mexican cartel hot on his heels, John Bishop attempts to head off any further attacks, but in doing so continues to anger the people he’s wronged.

The relationship between Nell and Henry struggles in the face of Henry’s secrets and lies. Nell, a woman with strong convictions against war, killing, eating meat and any number of ideologies and actions she which she is willing to protest, protect or panhandle-in other words, the complete opposite of the man with whom she had fallen in love. With the revelations about Henry’s past, and the life she knew nothing about, our heroine struggles going forward including the belief that the father of her child is capable of killing another human being. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate with some light discipline and Dom/sub scenarios.

There is a large ensemble cast of familiar secondary and supporting characters from a number of Lexi Blake’s interconnected series including the Masters and Mercenaries series including Ten Smith and Ian Taggart, and The Lost Boys.

HAPPILY EVER AFTER IN BLISS is a story of family, friendships, relationships and love. A story of secrets and lies; revelations and acceptance. The premise is emotional, heart breaking and engaging; the characters are energetic and captivating. HAPPILY EVER AFTER IS BLISS is a spicy, imaginative and intriguing second look at one of the oddest couples in Lexi’s series.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 26, 2020

What’s the actual last thing you’d ever want your executive assistant to see you doing the morning after you had hot, drunk, angry sex with her in a terrible hotel room? Dancing around your terrible hotel room to “Come and Get Your Love” like Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy—naked? Yeah. Me too.

And yet, here we are.

This isn’t even the most unprofessional thing that’s happened between us in the past couple of weeks.

The first was when I agreed to let her have Christmas Day off, but only if she goes with me to three family gatherings as my fake girlfriend.
The second was when she caught me belting out a Christmas song on stage in the awful hotel bar.
The third was the hot, drunk, angry sex that followed, but I do not regret it.

And she hasn’t even found out the real reason I need her by my side this holiday season.

I need to pull it together before I do the dumbest, most unprofessional thing of all—fall head over heels in love with the only assistant who’s lasted more than a month at the job and claims to hate me and my moods more than she hates eggnog.

And I’ve seen how much she hates eggnog.

REVIEW: . A VERY BOSSY CHRISTMAS by Kayley Loring is a stand alone, contemporary, adult, holiday themed erotic, romance story line focusing on thirty-two year old, high powered attorney Declan Cannavale, and twenty-eight year old, executive assistant Maddie Cooper.

Told from three first person perspectives (Declan, Maddie, Piper) A VERY BOSSY CHRISTMAS follows the forbidden relationship between thirty-two year old, high powered attorney Declan Cannavale, and twenty-eight year old, executive assistant Maddie Cooper. Maddie Cooper is Declan Cannavale’s executive assistant, and as such finds herself facing a Christmas working in the office with her ‘Scrooge’ of a boss but a home visit from Declan pushes all of Maddie’s buttons when our hero reveals he needs a ‘fake girlfriend’ for the Christmas holidays, holidays to be spent in Cleveland, with his family back home. Unable to resist, Maddie agrees only to discover that the Cannavale family dynamic is broken by betrayal and mistrust. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Maddie and Declan, and the potential fall-out as their time together comes to a close.

Declan knows there is a ‘no fraternizing’ policy at work but our hero is desperate. He needs a plus-one, or more specifically a buffer, to shield him from the anger and heart break of sins of the past. From Christmas Eve dinner, to a rehearsal party and the wedding of one of his brothers, Declan pulls Maddie into a potential disaster, only to discover that his heart has fallen for a woman who fears her heart will be broken when the holidays are done.

The relationship between Declan and Maddie is a forbidden romance; a fake boyfriend/girlfriend arrangement between the boss and his assistant, an assistant who very much wants to keep her job but once the couple crosses the line between a working relationship into something more, the struggle is real when both families see the potential for a permanent connection, and Maddie sees nothing but the potential for problems at work. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text. The sexual attraction is immediate and palpable.

We are introduced to a large ensemble cast of colorful, energetic and fun secondary and supporting characters including Declan’s rather loud and boisterous Irish/Italian family: sister Casey and her daughter Penelope; brothers Aiden, Eddie and Brady, and Brady’s fiancé Hannah, their parents Mamie and Tony, and Nonna Francesca and numerous cousins all raring to get down at Brady’s bachelor party- the frenetic back and forth energy between cousins is hilarious; Maddie’s sister Rebecca aka Bex, and her niece Piper; their parents Carly and Joe Cooper, as well as Maddie’s neighbour Mrs. Pavlovsky.

A VERY BOSSY CHRISTMAS is a story of family, relationships, forgiveness and love. The premise is engaging, clever and inviting; the characters are dynamic and real; the romance is spicy, flirty and seductive. A VERY BOSSY CHRISTMAS is a wonderfully, breath-taking and lively look at a forbidden relationship and another happily ever after.

Before writing steamy romantic comedy novels, Kayley Loring got a BFA in creative writing from a Canadian university and had a fifteen-year career as a screenwriter in Los Angeles (under a different name). She mostly wrote PG-13 family comedies that studios would pay her lots of money for and then never make into movies. In 2017 she decided to move to the Pacific Northwest and write about all the fun stuff that she wasn’t allowed to write about in those PG-13 scripts. Now she’s breathing cleaner air and writing dirtier words. It’s an adjustment she’s happily getting used to.

REVIEW:LOOKING FOR A COWBOY is the fifth instalment in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult HEART OF TEXAS romantic suspense series. This is former US Air Force airman Cooper Owens, and former Shell Ridge, California police officer turned PI Marlee Frampton’s story line. LOOKING FOR A COWBOY can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from several third person perspectives including Marlee and Cooper LOOKING FOR A COWBOY follows former Shell Ridge, California police officer turned PI Marlee Frampton as she investigates a potential serial killer who kills pregnant women then selling their babies for profit. Ten years earlier Marlee’s pregnant twin Macey was murdered, and her unborn child went missing without a trace. Fast forward to present day, wherein Marlee Frampton, now a PI, continues the search for her sister’s killer, reuniting other families along the way. Marlee’s latest clues take our heroine to Clearview, Texas where she will begin an investigation into a local couple, Clayton and Abby East, who recently adopted a new born baby boy. Enter Cooper Owens, Clayton’s friend, and the man with whom Marlee would fall in love. What ensues is the ongoing investigation into the murders and new born abductions, and the potential fall-out as both Marlee and Cooper find themselves caught in a trap meant to destroy them both.

Marlee Frampton was never going to stop searching for her sister’s killer, and the now ten year old niece she has never met but Marlee’s obsession brings her to Clearview, Texas, and with the possibility of her own happily ever after. To Marlee’s surprise, all of Cooper’s friends including Navy SEAL Clayton East and Abby Harper (The Christmas Cowboy Hero #1), Brice Harper (Cowboy Cross My Heart #2), former Green Beret Caleb Harper and veterinarian Audrey Martinez (My Favorite Cowboy #3); PI Cash, and Jace Wilder pull themselves together in an effort to take down a child abduction ring. Cooper Owens’ attraction to Marlee Frampton was immediate but within hours of meeting our story line heroine Cooper struggled with Marlee’s secrets about why she was searching in Clearview, Texas. When Marlee finally revealed the truth about her investigation, Cooper was the first to volunteer to help Marlee in her need for justice and revenge.

The relationship between Marlee and Cooper is one of immediate attraction but reality of Marlee’s appearance in Clearview Texas pushed all of Cooper’s buttons until the truth is revealed. Cooper knew immediately that he wanted Marlee Frampton for himself but there was definite competition, in only for the short term, for Marlee’s attention. Marlee Frampton never had time to settle down in the wake of her obsession with finding her sister’s killer(s). Meeting Cooper Owens stirred something deep within our story line heroine but her investigation is about to place Cooper in the direct line of fire. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

As mentioned earlier, there is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters many of whom we have me in previous instalments. We are also introduced to Cooper’s widowed mother Betty Owens, and the requisite evil may of may not have a familiar face.

LOOKING FOR A COWBOY is a story of murder, desperation, power and control. A story of friendships, relationships, family and love that follows a sickening business of baby brokering and killing, for the right price. The premise is heart breaking and emotional; the romance is seductive and captivating; the characters are energetic, wonderful and spirited.

Chapter 3
It was a good day. Cooper stood against the counter in the kitchen, a bottle of beer clasped in his hand as he watched Brice and Naomi with their new son. After all the heartache they had been through learning that they couldn’t conceive, they had found another way to have a family.
And Cooper couldn’t think of a more deserving couple.
“Ever think you’ll have one of those?” Jace asked, jerking his chin to the infant.
Cooper shrugged, twisting his lips. “Kinda hard to do when I’m single.”
“Pfft. Single people do it all the time.”
Cooper glanced at him with a frown. “I saw firsthand how hard it was for my mom being a single parent. And that’s when I was older. I can’t imagine doing it with a baby.”
“That was stupid. I shouldn’t have said that.” Jace’s gaze dropped to the floor before he took a long swig of beer.
Cooper studied his friend. “I know you didn’t mean anything by it. I just have some pretty harsh views on the subject. What about you? You want kids?”
“I do.”
“You’ve never told me that.”
“It’s not something guys talk about with each other,” Jace said with a shrug.
Cooper took a drink of beer and let what Jace had told him sink in. Then he said, “I can see you with kids. You’d make a good dad. But only because you’re just a big kid yourself.”
Jace laughed and then covered his mouth, nearly spitting out his beer. He swallowed then punched Cooper in the arm. “I can’t even say anything because it’s true.”
“So true,” Cooper replied with a smile.
Caleb walked up then, grinning. “I’m not even going to ask why Jace nearly choked just now.”
“It’s nothing, really,” Cooper said, still grinning as he glanced at Jace. “I just said he’d make a great dad since he’s a big kid himself.”
Caleb licked his lips to try and hold back his grin. “I already feel sorry for the woman.
She’ll think she has just one kid to take care of, but she’ll actually have two.”
“Hey, now,” Jace said, acting insulted, but his grin ruined it. “I can’t help who I am.”
The three laughed, then grew silent when the baby began to cry. Brice took the infant from his sister, Abby, and rocked him until the baby went back to sleep.
“He’s a natural,” Caleb said.
Cooper nodded. “When are you and Audrey going to have little ones running around?”
“In a few years. We’re not in any hurry,” Caleb answered.
Jace finished his beer and quietly set the empty bottle on the counter. “I’m glad this turned out well for Brice and Naomi.”
That made Cooper frown. “Why wouldn’t it?”
Jace rolled his eyes. “You really need to read the news.”
“Why? Not only is it damn depressing, but how can you believe any of what’s said? It’s all about who is reporting it. Same with history. It’s written by the conquerors.”
“Save me,” Caleb said with a dramatic sigh. “I can’t hear this argument for the millionth time.”
Jace nodded excitedly. “Exactly. Look, even Caleb agrees with me.”
“Hold up,” Caleb said and held up his hand. “I never said I agreed with either of you. I simply said I didn’t want to hear the argument. But, for clarity’s sake, I don’t listen to the news either.” He then turned to Cooper. “However, I do get breaking news alerts on my phone. You might want to at least do that.”
Cooper scratched behind his ear. “Fine. I’ll bite. Why should I be listening to breaking news?”
“You kill me. You really do,” Jace said as he squeezed the bridge of his nose with his thumb and forefinger. He then sighed dramatically and dropped his hand. “There’s been a rash of murders in several states involving pregnant women. The women are killed. The babies taken.”
Cooper was taken aback. “Who would do such a disgusting thing when there are plenty of women giving up children for adoption?”
Caleb turned and looked at his brother and sister-in- law. “You want to know why people would kill a pregnant woman for her child? All you need to do is look at Brice and Naomi.”
“No,” Cooper said, not buying it. “There has to be something else going on. Like I said, many women give up their children for adoption. That’s how Brice and Naomi got little Nate.”
Jace shot him a perturbed look. “And how many people aren’t accepted by the adoption agencies? How many can’t afford it?”
“So, you think there’re people out there stalking pregnant women, killing them, and hoping nothing is wrong with the infant so they can sell it to someone looking for a baby of their own?” Cooper asked.
Caleb nodded, his brows raised.
Cooper set his beer on the counter and gaped at his friends. “Have both of you lost your minds? No one can just pop up with a kid nowadays. There are social security numbers, fingerprinting, and too many other things that identify someone.”
“You seriously need to watch some crime TV, because you have no idea the lengths that some will go to,” Jace said. “As for everything you mentioned, if someone has the means, anything can be done.”
“Right,” Cooper said. “Money. Something you say these people with money don’t have to do is go through a regular adoption agency.”
Caleb held up a hand, halting them. Then he looked at Cooper. “Do you know what Nate’s adoption cost? It was over sixty thousand dollars.”
“Okay.” Cooper nodded, his mind working. “I was thinking around that amount.”
Jace gave him a pointed look. “How many people do you think have that kind of cash lying around? Some save their entire lives for retirement and never even get close to that amount. And, usually, it’s young couples who want kids.”
Cooper held up his hands. “Okay. Okay. I get the point.” He bit his lip, still thinking about the murders. “If someone is taking those infants from their mothers’ wombs, wouldn’t they charge more than an adoption agency? Not less? After all, they’re expending a lot more effort.”From Looking for a Cowboy by Donna Grant. Copyright © 2020 by the author and reprinted by permission of St. Martin’s Publishing Group.
