ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 16, 2021

It’s never too late for love.

Years ago, Mark Coleman made the only possible choice and left Rocky Mountain House before he tore his family apart. When he hears the four clans—Six Pack, Whiskey Creek, Moonshine and Angel—are working together to create a memory book, Mark also discovers the one detail that finally triggers his return.

Because he’s not just coming back to the family. Now that Dana is free and ready to move on, Mark plans to give the only woman he’s ever loved all the devotion and happiness she deserves, no matter how much sweet-talking, or dirty talk, it takes.

Meanwhile, when a shocking truth is shared with the oldest of the Six Pack sons, Blake Coleman begins a journey of assessment. Can he really fill his father’s boots and be the leader his generation turns to for guidance?

With lots of visits with all your favourite Colemans, this is a celebration of love and the lessons learned along the way.

Warning: this book is full of happily-ever-afters. Lots of I love yous, lots of babies, lots of laughter and happy tears. Pretty much, readers familiar with the series have a ton of feel-good hours of reading ahead. If you want angst—this isn’t it

••••••••

REVIEW: ROCKY MOUNTAIN FOREVER is the twelfth and final instalment in Vivian Arend’s contemporary, adult SIX PACK RANCH erotic, Canadian cowboy romance series. ROCKY MOUNTAIN FOREVER can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion as this particular entry is the culmination of several story lines and cross over romances with the author’s numerous series including Six Pack Ranch, Rocky Mountain House, Heart Falls, Colemans of Heart Falls, Holidays in Heart Falls, and the Stones of Heart Falls series.

Told from third person perspective using present day and memories (journal entries and memory book) from the past ROCKY MOUNTAIN FOREVER follows several months in the lives of the Coleman family, and the return of sixty year old, prodigal son Mark Coleman. Years earlier, Mark Coleman walked away from the family that he loved in fear of destroying their tight knit relationship. The few times Mark returned to the family fold he was greeted with disdain and anger, and in this Mark stayed away until it was time to return, one last time. With the large extended family embarking on a memory book, Mark decides it is time to come home, and claim the woman he has always loved, a woman who once loved somebody else forcing Mark Coleman to chose between family and love.

Meanwhile, the next generation of the Coleman clans continue to spread their wings, with the numerous pregnancies and births, graduations and job offers, and the fear that life as they know is ever evolving but not necessarily in a positive direction.

We are up close and personal with several couple as they witness the birth of their children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews, friendships and relationships. The memory book and journal entries reveal unforgettable events that shaped the lives of the clans, a memory book that is ever evolving with each new addition, and the additions are many.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN FOREVER is a wonderful and animated story of family, relationships, friendships and love; a story of one man’s heart breaking journey of yearning for a woman he could never have, and of one family’s connection to one another and the land they call home.

Description:
Meira Amon is the most reserved of the phoenixes, finding computers easier to deal with than people and their messy emotions. But she wants revenge against the Rotting King Pytheios for the murder of her parents just as much as her sisters. Offering herself as a queen for their ally, dragon shifter King Gorgon of the Black Clan, only makes sense.

Just one problem…

Samael Veles worked his lowborn ass off to become the fiercest warrior of the Black Clan. He has pledged his life to protect his king at all costs. Yet somehow, in the middle of war, he took one look at a woman in a reflection and gave up his heart. When that woman turns out to be the phoenix promised to mate his king and help bring peace to their kind, he has no choice but to accept it.

Until her fire unexpectedly destroys the king after they’ve wed. Now Samael must choose between his loyalty to his clan and protecting the queen who might be his mate from his people’s wrath, one of which will unlock a destiny no one could have ever imagined…

Each book in the Inferno Rising series is STANDALONE:
* The Rogue King

* The Blood King
* The Warrior King

Review:

The Warrior King by Abigail Owen is the 3rd book in her Inferno Rising series.

“Phoenixes were a prize sought by every creature. Particularly dragon shifters, whose right to rule as High King over all the clans was dictated by who mated a phoenix.”

Ok, I just need to tell you how excited I am to read this.

I love this series, I love the spin-off series (Fire’s Edge) and I was very excited to hear Meira (sister to Skylar, Kasia and Angelika) would be next to get a story. We’ve had Skylar and Kaisa’s stories, just waiting to hear more about Angelika…..

Meira is happy her sisters are all mated. So it’s down to her to suck it up and mate with the Black Dragon King! Is she happy? No, not at all, but with the Rotting Red King Pytheios trying to overthrow and rule all dragon kind, she thinks it’s the best option…..

Samael is a warrior to the core, but to align the black dragon clan to the Gold clan didn’t seem like the best option. But he follows his King Gorgon loyalty, and his King has decided to thrown his weight behind the new Gold and Blue King’s, to overthrow the Red King. Only time would tell if it was the right decision…..

These two were destined to be together, but neither will see that as the right option. Samael is sworn to protect the black dragon clan, but when he meets Meira, he has to hold his own dragon back! Of all the times to find the woman that could be his, he has to watch her mate with his king! And if that wasn’t bad enough, if the mating doesn’t work, Meira could die, or worse, the King!

(For a true mating the male blows fire into his female, if it works she becomes a dragon, if not she’ll die in a ball of fire! But for a Phoenix, fire won’t kill her, but if she doesn’t accept him, then the male could die instead!)

Fighting for what’s right is the common theme in these books, and it’s usually the woman that drags the realisation out of the dragon!

Meira would rather be behind a computer than face her decision, but it’s what she needs to do to get the Black Clan to help her sisters defeat the Red Dragon. Her ability she thinks is useless (two of her sisters can teleport and have visions) Meira can only turn a mirror into a portal) but as the book proceeds, that ability comes in very handy.

She knows Sam is her mate, but she’s promised her sisters and the Black Dragon King that a union between Phoenix and the black clan is what needs to be done to unite the clans together. She can’t back out…..And when the unthinkable happens and she has to flee, it’s Sam that takes care of her!

As usual the action is at a break neck speed! The ongoing story is about right over might. So I’d advise you to read this book in order. You don’t need to read the spin off series (Fire’s Edge) as it only touches on this timeline.

It’s great to see old characters from previous books. This story starts not long after the last book. It’s a rollercoaster of a ride, we barely have time to catch our breath, if it’s not dragons chasing Meira, then it’s plots unfolding, if it’s not emotional scenes, then it’s dragons fighting other dragons! I tell you, I was exhausted just reading it!!

Really well written, descriptions came alive as the pages flowed through my mind! It takes no effort to conjure up the fight scenes, the blood, the noise and sheer terror of being attacked!!

There isn’t a lot of sexy times in this book, they didn’t have time! ? But the emotions were felt, the anguish of unrequited love, the desperation and the sadness of loss!

And I love the Hellhound that guards the sisters, he’s so fierce with everyone except the sisters. He acts like a puppy, that’s the size of a small elephant! And he brings a bit of light relief and hilarity.

So if Meira is suppose to mate the Black Dragon King, but he’s not her mate. Where does Sam fit into this? Well he does, and really cleverly, but it does take time, patience and a few plot twists to get there!

I have to admit, I didn’t see a few things coming in the plot. But it’s all really coming together. There has to be a showdown with the Red Dragon King soon.

And with the last sister unmated! They will look to her to possibly unify the white dragon clan! But Angelika only has eyes for a certain dragon, and he’s in no shape to lead, love or even fly!!!

REVIEW: Selene is a struggling artist in New York, and she’s about to have her first art showing. But Selene wishes for more! She’s always wanted to meet some type of supernatural being, that’s probably why she paints them so much, her father told her so many wonderful tales, she believed him, and after he died, Selene wanted to be part of that magical world.

This is the first book by this author that I’ve read. I love Selene, she’s just a really nice soul. And totally clueless about what’s about to happen to her world. Griffin (Fae) and a really nice character, I think his role is peacemaker, he’s the one that brings Selene to the island after seeing her in a vision. Cyrus (Warlock) the one who brought her to the Island using a portal, the voice of reason. Emeric (demon) just thinks he can bond with Selene, then leave……

A curse ….. A Druid witch cast a spell that turns it into a curse ….. the curse is killing the supernaturals and only Selene can save them!! By bonding with them and sharing magic. Phoenix (vampire) bit of a dick if you ask me! Killian (werewolf) not met him yet, but I’m sure we will do soon.

Being kidnapped is not going to help win Selene over, but what else can Griffin do? He knows she the one to break the curse that both he and his friends have, he thought he’d tell her that and it would all be straight forward. But it’s not! She wouldn’t listen, she won’t believe and she’s always trying to escape! He needs to convince her fast, and before she meets the others!

Being told your a Druid witch after you’ve been abducted is just too much for her to take in. She’s looking to ignore the attraction she has for Griffin and looking for a way off this island! But spending time has Selene and Griffin falling for one another…..

Meeting Selene has Cyrus all confused! He knows he has to wait his turn, but having to watch Griffin and Selene together is proving difficult (especially as Griffin hasn’t told Selene about Cyrus and the others) Emeric thinks it’s just going to be about sex, no connection, but that’s not how it happens, and I liked watching him fall for his mate. He is just as protective and obsessed as Cyrus and Griffin. And Phoenix, well he’s just lost his coven! Slaughtered by the Holy Accolades! He’s in no mood to meet and greet Selene!

The Holy Accolades is an order of humans who are out to destroy the supernatural world. Selene is warned that the more they all bond and share her magic, the more danger she will be in, will the Order find her before she can bond with the five eldest sons?

I love my PNR and I’ve been reading a lot of RH, and I have to say this one has a lot of them beat. It’s fresh, it’s fast paced and it’s written very well. Love a descriptive story, actions and emotions too, I want to imagine the whole scene unfold in my mind, and with this book that was easy to do. And its got lots of passionate moments (she’s got five guys to please, what did you expect!) it’s got the drama of meeting demons who want her dead, and a vampire that wants to drain her dry!! And we get to watch Selene train with her magic.

And when Selene finally gets the magic she was promised, it totally opens her eyes. Getting her head around the fact she has to bond with five men seems daunting at first, but luckily Griffin, Cyrus and Emeric introduce her to the mate bond, Phoenix is going to be another matter!!

And I’m looking forward to meeting Phoenix and Killian……

Rolling into the coffee shop parking lot, I put my motorcycle in neutral and drop the kickstand. Unclipping my helmet, I hang it on the right handle and head inside for a warm dose of liquid caffeine. Last night, I woke up at three a.m. Unable to sleep, I started painting the image from my dream. Each dream I have is as fantastic as the next, but this one was especially intricate in detail. In the dream, blue fire swirled around me as if it had an essence of its own. From my fingertips, I wielded its power. The possibilities of what I could do were limitless. My brush stroked ravenously, bringing the vivid images of color to life on canvas. When I collapsed back in bed, exhausted, my eyes returned to the painting. Staring back at me was a resemblance of myself—exquisite and eerie. My eyes, an electric blue, share the same shade as the fire. Looking into those luminous orbs, there’s a secret she holds, a power she’s eager to unleash.
Over the years, I’ve come to the conclusion my dreams are my mind’s escape from our boring reality. Being adventurous and curious has led me to research many subjects, particularly the supernatural. Unfortunately, the closest I’ve come to anything of the former has been from movies, books, and art.
With my turn to order next, I rattle off my request to the barista for a cappuccino and a muffin. She takes my name and I leave the counter in search of a quiet corner. Dropping my backpack on the cushioned bench at my favorite window spot, I pull out my tablet and sketch pad. My email inbox is filled with ads for painting tools and, of course, makeup because I’m addicted to it, as well as adventure tour ads to feed my inner adrenaline junkie. Skipping over the ads, I click on an important email from Susan, the art gallery director of the 369 Studio Gallery, one of the swankiest galleries in New York. It took me two years to get a show there. I breathe a breath of relief when all her email includes is a confirmation that my art has been delivered and, tonight, they’ll begin preparation for my show tomorrow.
“Selene.”
Raising my head to the call of the barista brings my attention to a stunning man at the counter. Beneath a gray beanie is a messy mop of blonde hair with curls peeking out the bottom of his hat. Sunkissed golden skin is visible outside of his blue, short-sleeve shirt, white shorts, and leather flip flops. Not only is he handsome, but his beachwear causes him to stand out among the regulars. He’s definitely not from New York. He probably just flew in from a beautiful island on his private plane. Ugh, why can’t I meet a man like that?
Gathering my cappuccino and muffin, I catch beach stud eyeing me. Eyes as beautiful and blue as a turquoise ocean meet mine. A flutter of excitement and attraction shoots through me, drawing my lips into a curve. Beneath his heart-stopping eyes is a strong jaw, lips you want to kiss, and the kind of eyelashes women pay to glue on their lids. His features leave him in two categories—model or actor.
Not wanting to turn our moment into something awkward, I turn away from his golden angelic face, releasing a breath and all the butterflies with it. Back at my table, I peel away the wrapper from my muffin. Taking a bite, blueberry flavor bursts in my mouth and soothes the hunger pains in my belly. One of the things I like most about this coffee shop is the cute designs they make in the cappuccinos. Today, mine has five white leaves that are disbursed as my lips form over the edge of the mug.
Three tables down, beach stud is sitting alone with a cappuccino and laptop. As if he senses me ogling, he angles his head and pierces me with those sparkling ocean eyes. To be nice, his lips upturn in a kind smile. I’m sure he’s used to women staring.
Returning my attention to where it belongs, I shoot an email off to Susan, thanking her for the work and preparation she’s doing to ensure a smooth art show. The second email I send is to my cousin, Rachel, and my mother, Claire. It’s been a couple of weeks since I updated them on my activities, and I know they’ll be excited about the art show. With those emails sent, I turn off the tablet and reminisce about my vivid dream. More details come to mind, and I doodle on my sketch pad. Several minutes later, the image of a man with a scar on his cheek is looking back at me. I’m left wondering about the cause of that scar, then chuckle aloud at my ridiculous thoughts. The man is a figment of my imagination, yet I’m thinking of him as a living being. I need a boyfriend, I work too much, and now, I sound like my mother.
Gathering my belongings into my backpack, I swing it over my shoulder and head out to my motorcycle.
“Selene.”
I’m halfway to my motorcycle when I hear my name called with male bravado. Turning toward the voice brings me face-to-face with beach stud. Taking a step back, I finger the mace bottle dangling from my backpack. Just because he’s handsome doesn’t mean he’s not a threat.
“How do you know my name?”
The left side of his jaw flexes as he smiles. “I heard the barista call your name.”
“Oh, right. What can I do for you?”
“I’d like to ask you out for coffee, but since we both just finished a cup, how about dinner?”
Is that a hint of an accent I hear? Irish maybe? My eyes sweep up and down, taking in his tall height, toned arms, and broad chest. Can this guy get any more attractive? I’m guessing he wins over every woman he sets his alluring eyes on.
“You’re tempting, honestly, very tempting, but I don’t do flings or one-night stands, and you look like you won’t be here in New York very long.”
Beach stud reaches out and snags my wrist as I turn away. My gaze whips to his hand, and he immediately drops it.
“You’re right, I won’t be here very long. I’m here on business for two weeks, but I would love to have someone local show me the best of New York.”
“What makes you think I’m local?”
“Just a guess.” One hand slips into a pocket while the other rests on his beanie and rubs his head. “Are you always this hard on men when they ask for your company?”
“For my company?” Laughter shakes my shoulders and curls my lips. “Around here, when men ask for a woman’s company, he wants to pay her for sex.”
A pink hue fills his cheeks. “That’s not what I’m asking for. I prefer sex to be consensual and for there to be passion.”
Goosebumps pebble on my arms as those words leave his lips. Goodness, it’s painfully obvious how attracted I am to him.
“All right, enough of the sex talk.” Pulling a business card out of my back pocket, I hand it to him. “I don’t give out my number to people I just met, but I’ll be at an art show tomorrow at the 369 Studio Gallery. Meet me there, and I’ll show you around town after. That work?”
Beach stud pockets my card with a triumphant grin. “It does. I’ll be there.”
“Great. What’s your name?
“Griffin Hughes. It was a pleasure to meet you, Selene.”
“I’ll decide if I feel the same tomorrow.” I give him a smirk, and he laughs.
“I have my work cut out for me then, don’t I?”
As I walk away, I raise both hands in the air. “Just giving you the full local experience.”
Griffin remains there, glistening in the sun like a golden statue, watching me get on my motorcycle and ride away.

Her good friend…

Is suddenly a duke’s heir!

Miss Jocelyn Sudderfeld is working at Edge Hall, indulging her love of translating ancient texts with her librarian father—and evading the need to marry! She’s always enjoyed a teasing friendship with estate manager Mr. Alex Cheverton. Until he unexpectedly becomes the duke’s heir. Now his first duty is to marry a suitable debutante, not consort with an earnest bluestocking like her… So where does that leave their friendship?

•••••••••

REVIEW: Jocelyn and Alex have been friends for what seems like forever, and Jocelyn has had a crush on Alex for just as long, but all that is coming to an end!!

Alex is about to become heir to Edge Hall and become Duke of Farisdeen. Well, he’s being groomed to take that position, being estate manager for his cousin the Duke was enough for Alex, and getting to tease Jocelyn is a bonus. But being asked (well commanded) to become the heir to the Farisdeen estate and title is a great honour. So why isn’t Alex happier?

Jocelyn translates manuscripts from Ancient Greek into English. That makes her too smart for this period of time (ladies should be doing needlepoint and taking tea with other ladies) she loves working with her father and brother, but the most frustrating thing about working with her family, is that her brother is being credited with her work! But it’s a work of love for Jocelyn, so she just has to put up with it!

Sharing a chaste kiss changed their friendship, both have agreed that nothing would change, and how can it when Jocelyn is promised to another (a friend of her brother) it’s not a love match, but he’s promised Jocelyn she can continue her “work” of helping her father and brother with the Greek manuscripts. So she is spoken for, and he is in line to become the next Duke of Farisdeen, but neither can forget the kiss…..And when his uncle finds out!! Then that’s where the trouble begins, Alex is threatened with being disinherited, and Jocelyn is harassed to give up both her work and her friendship with Alex!!

Can Alex and Jocelyn really be together? Or will the duties that have been pushed upon Alex break this couple up?

It’s hard for us to imagine not being able to chose our own life, to find our own path, but women of that era had no such liberties, married off usually not for love, but for political gain! And for a woman to hold an intellectual conversation just wasn’t done!! And sometimes the men of title didn’t have it much better either! Finding the right wife didn’t necessarily mean the best for you, it meant continuing the line with people of the same standing!

Lots of rules, and tons of etiquette to learn!!

It’s a lovely book to read if your looking for a gentle romance, a small amount of angst and chaste kisses and smouldering looks.

West Sussex, late February 1834If his Oxford friends could see him now…they might not think so highly of his choice of profession. Not that he’d really had one.
With a sigh of annoyance, Alex Cheverton, estate manager of Edge Hall, the Duke of Farisdeen’s principal country property, got down on hands and knees and crawled under his desk to retrieve his waistcoat button. Castigating himself for putting off the task of repairing it, he backed out carefully, not wanting to compound his annoyance by banging his head on the desk.
Rising back to his feet, he stared at the offending button. Might as well leave the correspondence on his desk and tend to it now. Besides, he’d been craving a hot cup of tea since returning to his office after the chill of inspecting the stable block and the State Rooms the staff had just finished cleaning.
Button in hand, he walked out of his office and headed down the corridor to another of the smaller, private family rooms located, like his office, in a separate wing that backed onto and mirrored the U-shaped formal entry wing of Edge Hall. A moment later, he reached the sitting room, appreciating as he entered the warmth emanating from the fire on the hearth and the sunlight streaming through the window.
He shared this pleasant space with a handful of staff whose birth, like his, elevated them above congregating in the servant’s hall, yet was not sufficiently grand to entitle them to use the State Apartments or the sumptuous salons, bedchambers and anterooms reserved for the Duke. Soon after taking up his post, he’d had a small stove added to the fireplace in the room so that he could prepare tea for himself whenever he wished, without having to send to the kitchen. With wine in the decanter on the sideboard, a tin beside it containing the bread and cheese Cook sent up daily with his breakfast, he had sustenance to keep him going throughout the day.
The sideboard also contained an assortment of everyday necessities like needles, thread, scissors and thimbles.
He’d fixed the tea, taken a seat at the long table before the hearth, threaded a needle and bent over to begin his chore when a disturbance in the air of the room, followed by the wafting of rose perfume, announced a new arrival. Jocelyn, he thought, his senses stirring.
“Ah, you’ve heated the kettle, I see,” the newcomer said.
“Yes. There should be enough hot water left to make tea for you and your brother, if you’d like.” Distracted by her presence, he looked up to smile at her—and jabbed himself in the thumb.
Giving an undignified yelp, he rubbed at the spot of blood on his finger, not wanting to drip it onto the waistcoat.
“What’s this? Have you injured yourself?” she asked, walking over to the table. “Let me see.”
“I think I’ll live,” he said, holding up the finger for her inspection.
She took a handkerchief from her sleeve and wiped off his finger.
The pain of the pinprick forgotten, he savored the touch of her hands, acutely sensitive to the brush of fabric over his finger, the subtle scent of roses that clung to her. Guiltily aware that he shouldn’t be noticing it.
“Yes, you’ll do,” she said, releasing his hand. “Speaking of ‘do,’ whatever were you attempting here? “ She peered down at the thread, scissors, and waistcoat laid before him on the table. “Sewing on a button?”
“How very acute you are.”
“It’s my superior education. It allows me to rapidly evaluate a situation and discern the most salient points,” she tossed back, her beautiful dark eyes dancing.
He could stare into them forever, Alex thought. But of course, he wouldn’t. Trading barbs with Jocelyn Sudderfeld, the lovely, intelligent sister of the Duke’s librarian, who over the six years he’d worked here had grown from exuberant youngster into desirable young lady almost before he noticed it, was all he would allow himself. Especially now that he could no longer ignore how attractive her tall, graceful figure, gamin face, and fascinating eyes had become.
Fortunately, even if she didn’t view him merely as another pesky older brother, she was promised to another—or as close to promised as made no difference.
“Which begs the point,” she was saying, “of why the lofty estate manager of Edge Hall, cousin to the Duke of Farisdeen himself, is lowering himself to perform such a mundane task. Any number of housemaids could do it for you. Mary, in particular, would be delighted to be of assistance.”
“Which, if your understanding were as acute as you seem to think it, you would realize is exactly why I did not ask her—or any of the others.”
“Oh, my—has she turned love-sick, too? Well, what can a gentleman like you expect, when he is handsome, charming, intelligent—and cousin to a duke?”
“He expects to tread a very careful path away from love-sick housemaids,” Alex said with asperity, drawing a laugh from Jocelyn. “Although a little more respect from the sister of His Grace’s librarian wouldn’t come amiss.”
“Ah, but I’m not a lovesick housemaid.”
“No, you’re just an outspoken bluestocking whom I vainly hoped would have matured from the mannerless brat I encountered when I arrived six years ago”
“Perhaps, but a talented, outspoken mannerless brat,” she returned. “In fact, despite your cruel aspersions, which would have me bursting into tears, had I any sensibility, which fortunately I do not, I am still magnanimous enough to sew on that button for you. Can’t have you bleeding all over the parlor. If you’ll hand me the waistcoat and thread?”
Saying that, she seated herself at the table and held out her hand.
Quite happy to turn the task over to someone whom he didn’t have to worry about trying to sneak into his bed—much as he might welcome such a shocking but highly unlikely invasion from her—he offered her the threaded needle and handed over the waistcoat. “Are you sure you are able to sew on a button? Writing down your brother’s Greek translations all day doesn’t exactly qualify you as a seamstress.”
“Perhaps not, but since both he and Papa seem to shed buttons as freely as dogs do their winter coats in spring, I’ve plenty of practice doing that, too. You might cease insulting me and make me a cup of tea instead, while I mend your button. Preparing tea, I know you are competent to handle. Despite your lack of expertise with needle and thread, you’re not entirely the useless, idle cousin-of-the-Duke you were when you first arrived.”
“I’ll be happy to fix you’re a cup, if you will cease the cousin-of-the-Duke harassment. Since I am, as you very well know, merely the son of a country gentleman, just as you are. Only my father was content to occupy himself on his modest estate, rather than embrace scholarship, as your father and brother have.”
“If it earns me a hot cup of tea, I suppose I can desist.” Abandoning her teasing for a more normal tone, she asked, “How are the repairs going on the stable block?”
“Slowly,” he replied as he extracted tea leaves from the tin, put them into a pot and poured simmering water over them. “Although the local stone used in the original construction is a beautiful color, it doesn’t last well. There is chipping and cracking on almost every one of the carved cornices. Now that we’re reasonably sure there will be no further frost to exacerbate the cracks, the mason thinks he can start on it. But he expects it will be a lengthy and extensive project.”
“No riding with the hunt for you, then,” she said, pausing to accept a steaming cup.
“No, alas. Not that I ride with them often, anyway.”
“I know they are always pleased to welcome you when you do. And the Duke’s hunters do require exercise.”
“They do indeed. In fact, I’m planning to make a circuit of the tenant farms on the west side of the estate tomorrow, to inspect for any winter damage to cottages and barns and make sure the farmers have sufficient equipment and seed. All the weather indications promise it will be a fine, sunny day. Would you and Miss Morrison like to ride with me?”
“Emily is still tending her Papa as he recovers from a putrid cold, but I’ll send a note and ask her. Speaking for myself, I’d be delighted to ride. As long as I can choose which of the Duke’s hunters I get to exercise.”
“Knowing you, it will be the most skittish and ungovernable one in the stable,” Alex said.
“No, just the fastest. After all, the hunters do need to be galloped to keep up their stamina. So they can give the Duke and his guests a good run, if he should bring a party down to hunt. Do you think he will?”
“Since he’s waited this late, I doubt he’ll come now. He’s been attending a house party in the north with some political associates, and with Parliament to reconvene soon, I don’t think he’ll come all the way to Sussex before heading back to London. All is in readiness, of course, if he should turn up. I just looked through the State Rooms, and they are immaculate—not that I expected anything less. Still, I told Simons to pass my compliments on to the staff.”
“They have all been working like Trojans, getting the house ready. Farisdeen usually does come to Edge Hall to hunt before Parliament reconvenes. I imagine some will be disappointed to miss having the excitement of a grand party visit the house. You, I expect, will not.”
Alex laughed. “Disappointed not to add the work of housing, feeding and entertaining the Duke and a hunting party of anywhere from ten to fifty guests for several weeks, while at the same time helping the tenants prepare for spring planting and supervising the never-ending task of repairs and upkeep on the Hall, the stables, all the other outbuildings, and the tenant cottages? Not one bit. Though I expect that means I shall receive instructions shortly to meet the Duke in London and give him my spring report there.”
“Papa will be disappointed. He’d hoped to show His Grace all the progress Virgil and I—well, Virgil–has made on the translation of the Euripides tragedies. With the Duke of Portland having commissioned a new set of Aristotle translations from his chaplain, Reverend Owen, Papa knew Farisdeen hoped to have Virgil complete his work first.”
“Winning the first-to-the-finish competition among patrons sponsoring the translation of Greek classics into English?”
“Something like that. Just as well that His Grace won’t descend on us. Virgil is much happier with his nose buried in Greek text than he is presenting a report to the Duke–a prospect which always sends him into a state of high anxiety.”
“Speaking with Farisdeen often has that effect on people,” Alex said drily. “If Virgil is in such a hurry to finish, will he allow you to ride tomorrow?”
Jocelyn laughed, a delightful tinkling sound that always made Alex smile. “You must realize that ‘finish’ is a relative term. I doubt either Virgil—or the Duke of Portland’s chaplain—have any expectation of completing their projects for years yet. I think my brother can spare having me here to record his pristine words for an afternoon. Besides, I can tell him I’ll be helping Reverend Morrison by checking on his parishioners while he is laid up. ” She angled her head up at him, her dark eyes dancing. “Despite being mounted on the Duke’s fastest hunter, I promise not to outrace you…too often.”
“Only if you also promise not to sulk if I outrace you.”
“Easily done—since there’s little chance of that happening.”
Alex laughed, as she meant him to. Sometimes, when she challenged him to a gallop or to a game of chess, she seemed once again the vibrant, saucy girl who’d shocked him when he first arrived by riding the feistiest horse in the Duke’s stables—clad in her brother’s breeches. Unconventional, outspoken, endlessly curious about everything around her.
Her manners had improved—and she no longer rode about in breeches. But sometimes he’d catch a whiff of her rose perfume…or a glimpse of her in profile, her lushly rounded figure definitely no longer that of a child.
It had certainly been easier when he could think of her only as an engaging brat. But despite the temptation she presented, even if it were possible, he wasn’t sure he’d opt to return her to her girlish state of six years ago–and thereby forfeit the pleasure of appreciating the beauty and allure that both enticed and bedeviled him.
Fortunately for the maintenance of his control and good character, she lived with her little family in the Dower House. No chance of running into her in her night rail as she came down to the kitchen to prepare her wakeful father a glass of warm milk. He saw her only in the public rooms at Edge Hall, or out riding and walking the fields and farms, often with her friend Miss Morrison, the vicar’s daughter, accompanying them.
Tomorrow, he could rely on her desire to outrace him and her delight in meeting with the tenants, as well as the presence of Miss Morrison, to reinforce his control over the annoying amorous impulses she seemed to inspire in him of late.
Not that he really needed any help to avoid crossing the lines of propriety. After the searing experience in his late teens that had seen him secretly engaged and then summarily rejected by the young lady’s father, he’d become very good at reining in both unruly emotions and amorous impulses.
Besides which, though they might both be offspring of obscure country gentlemen, lowly members of the gentry whom the ton in London might consider beneath notice, he was a gentleman, and she was a lady. He liked and respected her too much to abuse her trust.
No matter how much her beauty and spirit might speak to him.
“There!” she said, pulling him from his thoughts as she held up his waistcoat. “Button firmly reattached. With, I’ll have you note, perfect, fine, even stitches of which even your Mama would approve.”
He took the garment, a shock of awareness zinging through him as, for a moment, their fingers touched.
Maybe it would be better if she were to regress to being a saucy sixteen-year old, he thought with a sigh.
“Very fine stitchery,” he said, recovering his wits. “My Mama, a notable needlewoman, would approve.”
“Mine was, too,” Jocelyn said, her teasing look fading and a distant expression coming over her face. “She was so patient, teaching me, restless and irritated as I often was with the lessons. She knew I’d far rather be with Papa in his study, learning Greek and Latin and French and Italian, than sewing samplers and practicing embroidery.”
“She despaired of having so unnatural a daughter?” he teased.
“No, she was proud of Papa’s scholarship, proud enough to defy her family and marry him in the teeth of their disapproval. A Randall of Innisbrook should have done much better for herself than to wed a former Oxford don whose chief goal in life was finding a patron to support his translation projects. She was pleased that I shared his interests, pleased that my aptitude for languages allowed me to assist him.”
“You copied out the translations for him, even before you began doing it for your brother, didn’t you?”
“Yes. It began as an exercise, when he was teaching me Greek. Then, when he developed rheumatism in his hands and writing became difficult, he found that I was able to take down his words as quickly and accurately as he could dictate them. So I was already quite accomplished by the time he passed the work on to my brother.”
“Still an unusual occupation for a female.”
She grinned. “Ah, but I am a very unusual female. Now, if I am to go riding tomorrow, I’d better get that tea for my brother and get back to work. Shall we meet at the stables around one? Emily can meet us there.”
“One would be fine. I need to work on the ledgers in the morning.”
“I’ll have the Dower House Cook make us up some provisions,” she said as she added more tea leaves to the pot and poured in some additional hot water. “If the tenants don’t press too much food and drink upon us, we can picnic on top of Trethfort Hill. If it is as fine and sunny as you claim it will be, we’ll get a wonderful view over the South Downs, from Edge Hall village all the way to Charleton.”
Extracting a tray from a drawer in the sideboard, she put her cup and saucer on it, added another set and the teapot, then poured a bit of milk into the cups. “I’ll see you tomorrow, then.”
“Shall I carry the tray to the library for you?”
“Thank you, but I can manage. You’d better get back to your reports. Besides, it wouldn’t do to have His Magnificence, the Duke’s cousin, carrying a tea tray like a lackey.”
“Minx!” he threw at her as, laughing, she hefted the tray and walked out of the room.
She was set to marry a curate, a friend of her brother’s from university, once the young man secured a living sufficient to support her, he knew. Alex wondered how this lively, intelligent, unusual lady who loved galloping hunters and spending her days transcribing ancient Greek would fare as a vicar’s wife serving a small rural parish. Where hunters, and scholarship, were likely to be thin on the ground.
He would certainly miss her when she did marry. That liveliness and intelligence and her always-unexpected view of the world brightened his days as much as her beauty attracted him. Her brother was polite enough, but not even his doting sister would describe him as “lively,” and her father, though a fine gentleman, was rather garrulous, with a tendency to ramble on and on about his work. Except when the Duke was in residence, bringing along his secretary, like Alex a gentleman from a modest but respected family, Alex had no other company of his station.
He knew he was welcome to visit the Squire and the handful of gentry families who lived in the area. But as a bachelor—the Duke had made his remaining unmarried for at least ten years a condition of his employment, a restriction, after his previous unpleasant experience, Alex had embraced–he couldn’t return the hospitality. And since that stricture was not generally known, neither did he wish to visit any of the local families with marriageable daughters with enough frequency as to give rise to any marital expectations.
Should he be foolish enough to wed, thereby forfeiting his position, the small competence he thus far managed to save from the salary the Duke paid him wouldn’t allow him to support an independent household. While he knew his father would receive him and his bride back at Wynborne, he’d witnessed first-hand with his younger sister’s marriage how unpleasant it could be to have a wife and a mother-in-law under the same roof. Nor did he want to add to his father’s burdens the necessity of supporting both him and a wife. Removing the drain of his expenses from the family purse had been the main reason he’d accepted the estate manager’s job to begin with.
All of which meant he attended only the celebratory events or holidays for which the whole neighborhood was invited. Dinner or cards with the Sudderfelds provided the majority of his evening entertainment, and with Jocelyn the most dynamic member of her family, life after she married and left Edge Hall would lose much of its sparkle.
For now, he thought as he doffed his coat, shrugged on his repaired waistcoat, then replaced the outer garment, he would continue to enjoy her company—and hope that her vicar took his time finding a living.

The Tratchar by M.A. Abraham – Review & Giveaway

The Tratchar by M.A. Abraham – Review & Giveaway

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Apple

Description:
Cambria is a highly powered Tratchar, and her task is to take care of the Sentinels, in the same way her ancestors did, many millenniums before. She is good at her job and proud of what she does. She is also deadly as she is beautiful.

Anders isn’t one of the elite among the Guardians of the Empire, but he is happy to be numbered among them. To him, it is a point of pride. For, although he is one of the younger dragon shifters, he figures he has lots of time to develop.

All thoughts of his status, however, disappear into the mist when he sees a pretty young Elven female create a tree out of a seed she holds cupped in her hands. He watches in awe, as the small tree forms, and then loses all that he is to her as their eyes meet, for she is his life mate, and he can tell she is as aware of what he is to her as he is to her.

Review:

The Tratchar by M.A. Abraham is the 5th book in her Guardians of the Empire series. Brief refresher:  This series is set in the same world as Abraham’s Elven Chronicles, but thousands of years past.  This series is set in the same world as Abraham’s wonderful Elven Chronicles series, but thousands of years after that series ended; with all surviving humans having been granted a land called The Valley, to live in peace and prosperity.  Over the years, these humans did not remember the Elves, who were in their own portal.  In the earlier books, the Elves will got to meet many of these humans, as well as having to fight against the evil in those lands.

From the start we spend time with Cambria and her lifemate Anders, as they enjoy their love and free time away from others.  But soon they are called back, with Cambria stepping forth to help a major move of the Guardians, Sentinels, and Elves to leave the Valley and their own homes to where it all started. This is a major undertaking, as it involves the humans to be able to defend themselves, especially against Evart’s family. Evart, who is the youngest son of the King, previously helped send away Sonya and later Alexis to their safety with the Elves.

What follows is an exciting wild adventure where Gabriella, tries to help train Evart, as he returns to his homeland, and secretly fight his family for control and to stop their plans of destruction in the Valley.  But the majority of the storyline revolves around all the Elves working together, as well as with the Fae to leave their own homes and return to the Elven lands that were hidden away long ago. Now that there is peace, the fates and oracles have told them what they must do to bring the Sentinels back home.

I do not want to say too much more, as it would be spoilers, with a lot going on.  It was an interesting story, giving us a glimpse of the future, as well as leaving things open for Evart helping the Elves against his family.  The Tratchar was a well written and entertaining story. A great addition to the series. You should read this series, and start with the first book to get to know all the characters.

REVIEW:MAINELY MONEY is the third instalment in Matt Cost’s contemporary, adult GOFF LANGDON, MAINELY MYSTERY suspense series focusing on part time private investigator and book store owner Goff Langdon. MAINELY MONEY can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary. MAINELY MONEY advances the series approximately twenty years.

Told from third person perspective MAINELY MONEY picks up approximately twenty-two years after the events of book one MAINELY POWER, and an old adversary has returned. As a part time investigator, the now fifty-something Goff Langdon is often called upon to find the ‘dirt on cheating spouses’ but a request from US Senator Margaret Mercer’s husband Max to locate a possible blackmailer finds Goff running in circles. From a search for a serial rapist and murderer, a femme fatale’s missing sister to the Russian mob, and discrimination and accusations against a newcomer to America, Goff has his hands full until everything begins to spiral out of control. When Goff gets too close to the truth, a couple of rogue and former military spooks threaten everyone he loves, forcing Goff and his intrepid gang of wanna-be heroes to take matters into their own hands.

MAINELY MONEY is an intriguing story of mystery and suspense. The world building is colorful and richly detailed. The political ramifications of Goff’s investigation begin to take on a life of their own.

The return of several friends adds familiarity and cohesion to the current timeline: Bart the cop, Attorney 4 by Four, Jewell and Richam Jones, Goff’s daughter Missouri, his twin brothers Nick and Lord, and Goff’s new wife Chabal (whom we met in the previous story lines but she had yet to become Goff’s wife.)

Matt Cost pulls the readers into a story of power and control; secrets, lies and manipulation; blackmail, rogue assassins, the powerful and political elite. The premise is investigative, intricate and detailed; the characters are energetic, lively and passionate. MAINELY MONEY is another welcome and captivating addition the Matt Cost’s GOFF LANGDON MAINELY MYSTERY series.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 4, 2021

It was only supposed to be for a few days.

When Mr. Tall, Dark, and Sexy asks me to play tour guide to him and his friends for their bachelor getaway weekend, I’m helpless to resist. Then again, I’ve always been a sucker for an accent, piercing blue eyes, and a panty-melting grin.

Luke and I shared an immediate attraction. From the moment our eyes met, I was a goner. I would have done practically anything for a little more time with him.

Even wanting to be his three-day vacation fling.

Reckless? Maybe. Do I regret it? Not a chance – even if I can’t get him out of my head.

When a wedding invitation shows up at my door, it takes all of half a second to make up my mind to see the man I can’t stop thinking about.

Only I may be in over my head.

Royally.

REVIEW:Who doesn’t want to be swept off their feet by Prince Charming himself? This is not your average Cinderella retell, heck, it’s not even a modern-day Cinderella. It’s so much better!

Gia is a bartender from the lovely city of Chicago, she is funny, smart and open, people like her. Well one shift, she meets a group of customers from out of town, visiting friends. When they ask her to be their tour guide around the new city, she agrees to help the group out. Not expecting to connect with Luke, she finds herself enjoying spending time with him. When their time together comes to an end, Gia wants more time with Luke, but alas he must return to his home abroad. Later, when she receives an invite to Luke’s homeland of Lecara, she is over the moon to see him again. When she arrives however, she gets the shock of her life, as Luke isn’t just the average Jo she thought he was. Not everything is what it seems when Gia arrives, as always drama ensues and the wicked witch in the form of the Queen…. Luke’s mother. Enter into the world of Royalty, nothing is what it seems and Gia and Luke will be put to the test.

Just to say, this series would make a killer show/movie. I was enthralled with the first chapter; it embraces you and doesn’t let you go. Gia is a girls girl, proud and strong, she doesn’t expect to be treated any differently than any other person and is always willing to help others. What I loved the most about this book was the chemistry between Luke and Gia. I can’t wait to see what comes next!

The Accidental Fiancé by Christi Barth – a Review

The Accidental Fiancé by Christi Barth – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple

Descripition:
Is it the chance of a lifetime or his biggest mistake?

When former hotel manager Alex Kirkland, his sister and their best friends pooled their money for an unusual lottery prize—a historic, dilapidated inn on the Maryland shore—as a last-ditch attempt to escape rotten circumstances, they never expected to win. But they’re all looking for a fresh start and a second chance, so Alex convinces everyone to move in and repair the building in time for the spring wedding season.

Sydney Darrow never planned to return to her hometown. But her family needs her and Sydney can endure anything for 90 days—including making sandwiches and serving coffee with a smile until she returns to her jet-setter career. When her grandma mistakes a handsome customer for the “fiancé” Sydney created when she thought her grandma was on death’s door, well…Sydney will do anything to keep her spirits up during treatment. She can persuade him to keep up the charade for a few months, right?

But when Alex agrees to play along, will they both fall for their own fiction?

Review:

The Accidental Fiancé by Christi Barth is the first book in her new Love Lottery series. Alex Kirkland, our hero, has lost his job, and his sister, plus two close friends are also in dire financial shape.  When his sister, Amelia, buys a lottery ticket (to win a historic inn), since it’s Christmas and the other three also buy a ticket.  They actually win the lottery and the 4 of them are partners, as they head to Maryland, for a fresh start, and hope.  The Inn is in bad shape, totally dilapidated, but they are determined to work hard to renovate and manually repair the Inn, and hope they can make some money when it is restored.  In a short period, they begin to meet the wonderful townsfolk, who are happy to see the inn possibly return to its former glory.

Sydney Darrow, our heroine, returns home to help her grandmother, who is undergoing chemo, run the family mercantile. Sydney is also on leave from her job, which she was hoping for a promotion; but has put everything on hold until her grandmother is done with her treatment.  While working at the store, Sydney meets a handsome stranger, who came across as arrogant, even though he was a hunk.

Alex, the handsome stranger, comes to the store to buy stuff, and her grandmother misunderstands, and thinks he is Sydney’s fiancé.  Alex goes along with the ruse (for a couple of months), and soon they become good friends, helping each other, and the town actually believes they are engaged; except for a select few who know the truth.

In a short time, the chemistry between them is sizzling hot, and a romance will begin.  It was fun to see Alex, Amelia, Ever and Teague work hard on the house, and the girls especially becoming close to Sydney, who was not used to having girlfriends.  I also loved a number of characters in the town, and how many would help the group at the Inn.  Alex is also concerned, since he has put out most of his money to pay for the restoration, and the others keep adding to the bills.

What follows is that both Alex and Sydney have some past issues, that somehow are interconnected to Alex losing his job, with neither telling the other.  Will they stay together after the truths are revealed?

The Accidental Fiancé was a sweet, heartwarming, romance that was very well written by Christi Barth.  This was a fun read, likeable characters, great couple and some steam. If you enjoy a pure romance, I suggest you read this book.
