Betting on a Duke’s Heart by Royaline Sing -a Review

Description:
Aetius White, the Duke of Saxton, couldn’t save his father, but he’ll be damned if he won’t save the man’s dream. He’ll acquire a Triple Crown–winning horse at any cost, even marriage. Luckily, the lovely lady in mind loves challenges as much as he. Certainly he can win her heart without losing his own…

Hell will freeze over before Miss Dina Campbell agrees to marry a horse-mad man who wants her dowry of a prize stallion, no matter what her father wants. The duke may be handsome, but he’ll have to prove he is a suitable match for her before she’ll even consider the offer. And there’s no way this love-averse man will ever succeed with the wager that she has planned…

Review:

Betting on a Duke’s Heart begins with Dina Campbell checking her appearance before descending the stairs to meet yet another suitor whom she does not want.  She, as always, has tried to make herself as unattractive as possible.  When she enters the room to meet Aetius White, the Duke of Saxton, she is astonished when he tells her “…you are to be the Duchess of Saxton”.  She immediately tells him that she is not, but she is even more surprised when she is told that her father has already agreed to the marriage.  Dina is even more put out when Aetius basically tells her this is the way of it and he’ll be back in touch.

Dina knew of the Duke and knew well his love of horses, but it galled her that her horse was what he wanted and not her.  She didn’t want to be anyone’s second.

Aetius finds himself intrigued by Dina.  But his first priority is to win the Triple Crown which he can do if he marries her and is able to use her prized horse.  What he does not count on is that just as he is determined to marry her, she is just as determined to not marry.  What neither count on is the growing attraction between them and how to handle it.

Betting on a Duke’s Heart is a nicely written story.  Dina is a strong and independent woman, albeit a little naïve at times.  Aetius is your typical male who was only marrying to further his personal endeavors.  I did enjoy some of the banter between the two of them. However, there was so much about horses (breeding and all!) that it almost overwhelmed the story.  Do not get me wrong.  Horses are part of the plot, but breeding in detail? I also enjoyed getting to explore a little of Dina’s mixed heritage.  Overall, even though I found Betting on a Duke’s Heart a little slow, it was an enjoyable read.  If you’re a fan of the genre, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as well.

♥♥♥Emma♥♥♥

I was a willing sacrifice in an arranged marriage.
Until my father made a new deal and gave me to another.
Now I must marry a savage.
A Northerner- the very thing I had been taught to hate.
I vow to never be his. I will never belong to Shay O’Reagan.
I will defy him every step of the way.
He may lay claim to my body, but he will never own my heart.

◆◆◆Shay◆◆◆

In order to secure my place in the Irish Mafia, I agree to an arranged marriage.
A marriage with a willing bride, one groomed to be the wife of a mafia king.
What I get is a redheaded beauty hell bent on my destruction.
Turns out, she was meant to be the perfect mafia wife- just not mine.
That treacherous detail doesn’t stop me from wanting her.
From needing to taste her ruby red lips.
The fire that blazes in her defiant eyes lights a desire inside of me that demands I claim her as my own.

While she wastes my time defying me with every breath, the North rises up demanding retribution for a crime that was buried a long time ago.

The clock is ticking as I battle a war around me and within my own walls. Every minute takes us both closer to certain death.

I’m unsure of who my true allies are and where my enemies are hiding. There’s only one thing I’m certain of.

I will never give up.
I will fight to the end, no matter the cost.

I am a King and I will die on my feet.

REVIEW: MAFIA KING is the second instalment in Vi Carter’s contemporary, adult YOUNG IRISH REBELS erotic, dark, Irish Mafia romance series. This is Shay O’Reagan, and Emma Murphy’s story line. MAFIA KING can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line content including graphic violence, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Shay and Emma) MAFIA KING follows the arranged marriage relationship between Shay O’Reagan, and Emma Murphy. Shay O’Reagan is about to take his place as King in the East as part of the Mafia rule of Ireland but to seal the deal Shay is forced into an arranged marriage with Mafia princess Emma Murphy whose father is a King in the South but all does not go according to plan as deals made behind the scenes threaten the life of our story line heroine, deals meant to secure more power for everyone concerned. But the death of Shay’s brother in an illegal underground fighting arena has Shay focusing on revenge against the people involved, revenge that splits Shay’s attention placing Emma in the direct line of fire. What ensues is the building but acrimonious relationship between Emma and Shay, and the potential fall-out as promises made threaten any chance of a happily ever after for our story line couple.

Emma Murphy had no idea that her life was about to implode. Believing she was betrothed Shay’s brother Jack, our heroine is blind sided when a deal is made for her to marry Jack’s brother Shay. Refusing to accept her fate, Emma is miserable and attempts to make Shay’s life miserable any way she is able. Shay was already a King in the North but an opening elsewhere meant marrying Emma Murphy would secure his place as the King in the East but Shay found himself falling for the immature but feisty Emma Murphy, a woman who would become a pawn in a much larger game of power and control.

The relationship between Shay and Emma is an arranged marriage. Their immediate attraction to one another is cooled by Emma’s hostility and immaturity, as well as Shay’s need to gain control of the people taking aim at both himself and the woman with whom he will fall in love. On the run, trying to stay one step ahead of the people in charge, Emma finds herself falling for a man who is willing to die to protect the people he loves. The $ex scenes are intimate, passionate and intense.

We are introduced to Shay’s parents Liam and Ava O’Reagan, as well as his brother Jack; Emma’s father Red Murphy, and her brothers Noel, Mark, and James; IRA Chief Commandant Lucian Sheahan; Underground match arranger Amanda.

MAFIA KING is a story of family and relationships, power and control. The premise is dramatic, dark and gritty; the romance is energetic, sizzling yet aggressive; the characters are stubborn and spirited.

She’s fiery, and she seems different this morning. I can see interest in her eyes when she looks at me, and that look makes her appear older. She no longer appears so child-like. I’m trying to picture her out of that fucking Irish dancing dress. I can’t see her properly with it on. It swallows her, hiding the truth that she is, in fact, a woman. Yet, her green eyes hold an innocence that tempts me. Right behind it, I see intelligence; she’s analyzing things. But most of all, right now, she’s pissing me off to no end. She needs to learn who’s King here.

I grin at her, and her earlier smugness dies as I leave the kitchen and make my way upstairs, taking the steps two at a time. All her luggage is piled up in the middle of the floor where she left it last night. I grab the first one and open the bedroom window.

If she won’t get changed, then she has no use for her clothes.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 15 , 2021

How did my life spin this out of control?

What was meant to be the trip of a lifetime has devolved into utter heartbreak.

The man I thought I was falling in love with believes the worst of me, thanks in part to his scheming mother—the evil queen.

It seems as though her sole mission is to tear us apart, and she’s using every dirty trick in the book.

Lies, deceit, subterfuge…this isn’t what I signed up for. I don’t care about the title or the prestige.

All I want is Luke.

How fitting that another lie is what I’m told will save us. My prince says he has a plan in place. To be patient. To wait.

But I’m not sure my heart can take much more.

REVIEW:I NEED the last book!!!

It’s rare to find a book, let alone a series that catapults you into the world of the story. His Royal Plan does this tenfold. This book is the second in The Lecara series and continues where the first book leaves off. For readers that haven’t read the first one, I do strongly recommend reading it first before starting this gem.

I don’t want to spoil anything, so I won’t say much but wow! Love and betrayal, hot spicy moments, toss in some funny giggles and you have yourself a killer story. Just when you think you know what is going to happen, the next plot twist rounds the corner. This book defines the word page turner, it’s so good!

Gia and Luke will make you fall in love with them all over again, but not before Luke makes you want to shake some sense into him. Jodie has blown me away with this new series and I can’t wait to see how it ends!

Raine knows that Mariana is his mate but refuses to tie her to a potential life on the run, a life that is threatened by otherworldly beings, and the possibility that Raine will not be around for the long haul. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Mariana and Raine, and the potential fall-out as Mariana’s stalker is determined to claim our heroine as his own.

VAMPIRE is a story of obsession, power, fate and love. We are reintroduced to vampire/demon and assassin/mercenary Noah Siosal, and Abby Miller; detective Evan McConnell, and his fiancé purebred demoness Tabitha (Tabi); Deputy Baker and his son Johnny. Mariana tried to swallow and wet her suddenly dry throat. Having him near was too much for her libido, and if the guy had any idea of the dreams he’d starred in lately, he’d probably blush. Well, maybe. Something told her that Raine didn’t blush. “Why did you leave town?” she asked.
One of his brows arched. How could a freakin’ eyebrow look sexy? “The job was done.”
Ouch. Okay. Well, then. He’d only been there for the job of watching Ivar and Noah. “Then why did you come back?” She looked away from him.
His sigh was long-suffering and didn’t tell her a thing. “That’s a long story, and I can’t go into it.”
“Seriously?” She whipped around to face him. “Are you kidding me? You show up on my porch, get kidnapped, admit you were in my group under false pretenses, take off for Montana, and then return without being able to explain why? Oh, I don’t think so. Either you start talking right now or you get the heck out of my house.” The place already seemed smaller and somehow safer with him in it, but she knew better than to start depending on him. He’d be gone again soon.
His eyes flared in a way that didn’t even look human. “I’m out of here the second we find this guy.”
Yikes. Okay. That hurt a little bit. She’d thought she’d gotten an interested vibe from him a couple of times, but maybe she’d misread him? He was the sexiest man she’d ever been this close to in real life, so maybe he went for perfection like Tabi Rusko? Mariana was fine with her curves and looks, but maybe she’d overestimated Raine’s interest when he’d thrown Johnny Baker up against the wall after the kid had insulted her. “I think you should leave.”
“No.”
Heat flashed up her spine to tingle at her nape. “No? Are you joking?”
“No.” He cocked his head, watching her.
She had the strongest urge to punch him again, but her wrist still ached from last time. The guy had abs of solid rock. “I don’t think you’re understanding me,” she gritted out.
He moved toward her without warning, pivoting and putting her back against the wall. “You’re not understanding me.” His big body loomed over her, and an unexpected heat rolled off him.

Description:
The battle has been won, but the war is just beginning.

Although at long last Razia Khan has found peace with herself and love with her prince, Arjun, her trials are far from over. In order to save her prince and his city from certain destruction, Razia made a deal with the devil–her father, the Sultan of Nizam. Now the bill has come due.

Razia must secure the province of Zindh, a land surrounded by enemies, and loyal to a rebel queen who has survived her father’s purge. But when her old tormentor Prince Karim invades her new home and forces her into a marriage alliance, Razia finds herself trapped in the women’s quarters of a foreign palace, with her beloved Prince Arjun exiled from her side.

Now, in order to free herself, and her province, from Karim’s clutches, she must call upon all of her training as a royal princess, a cunning courtesan, and a daring thief to summon new allies and old friends for a battle that will decide her fate, and the fate of an empire.

Review:

Gifting Fire by Alina Boyden is the second book in her Stealing Thunder fantasy duology.  I am happy to say Gifting Fire was another excellent read.  Razia Khan, continues to be the wonderful heroine in this story.  When we left off in Stealing Thunder, her father, placed Princess Razia, to lead the province of Zindh, with her love Prince Arjun and her two sisters, joining her.  Soon Razia finds herself with new allies, such as Hina, whose brother was murdered by Razia’s enemy Karim.  Hina brings all her girls and their zahhaks to help Razia, and hope to defeat Karim, who she wants to kill for murdering her brother.   In a short time, things drastically change when Razia’s father comes and brings with him Karim, as they have agreed on an alliance; Razia to marry Karim.  Despite her desperation and deviance, she will agree in order to save her sisters, as well as Arjun. She manages to get Karim, with her father’s insistence, to allow her sisters to join her, as well as Hina and her maidens (who are warriors in their own right).

They travel back to Karim’s home, where Razia is trapped and pretending to be willing to marry Karim, especially with his evil parents watching her every move.  She works closely with Hina, to find a way to get help to rescue them, and playing safe for now.  We learned in the first book how smart and cunning Razia was, with her amazing ability and skills to create ways to win these wars.  Will she survive Karim and his family?

What follows is an exciting and at times tense story, with Razia using her climbing ability to get free during the wee hours to send messages to possible allies; and get back in time before she is discovered.  I really hated Karim, his mother and father, as they were truly evil.   At the same time, Boyden gave us some fantastic secondary characters that I loved, such as both of her two sisters, Hina, Arjun, as well as all those allies who were willing to risk their lives to fight the enemy.  I loved her wonderful dragon, Sultana, who was amazing, and the other zahhaks.  To tell too much more would be spoilers, and you really need to read and enjoy the wild and climatic ending.

The last half of Gifting Fire was very exciting, tense, nonstop action, with flying dragons, aerial battles, and a heroine who stood up to the challenge.  This was also a sweet romance, as I really liked Razia and Arjun together.  Alina Boyden did a great job writing this wonderful fantasy.

The Girl and the Mountain by Mark Lawrence – Review & Giveaway

Description:
On the planet Abeth there is only the ice. And the Black Rock.

For generations the priests of the Black Rock have reached out from their mountain to steer the fate of the ice tribes. With their Hidden God, their magic and their iron, the priests’ rule has never been questioned. But when ice triber Yaz challenged their authority, she was torn away from the only life she had ever known, and forced to find a new path for herself.

Yaz has lost her friends and found her enemies. She has a mountain to climb, and even if she can break the Hidden God’s power, her dream of a green world lies impossibly far to the south, across a vast emptiness of ice. Before the journey can even start, she has to find out what happened to the ones she loves and save those that can be saved.

Abeth holds its secrets close, but the stars shine brighter for Yaz and she means to unlock the truth.

Review:

The Girl and The Mountain by Mark Lawrence is the 2nd book his Book of the Ice series. I loved Lawrence’s Book of Ancestor series, and did enjoy the first book of Book of the Ice series, The Girl and the Stars. Though I did enjoy much of this 2nd book, I did have some mixed feelings.

The Girl and the Mountain picks up where the first book left off, with our heroine, Yaz waking up back on the ice, Abeth, with the evil priests imprisoning her and determined to change her to their rule and the Hidden God.  With some of her friends having risen to the top, in a short time she is rescued and despite meeting the evil Hidden God, and learning the truths, she will go to find the sea and the land of green.  With Quell and Zeen deciding to stay behind in their homes on the ice, Yaz, Maya, Erris, Quina and Thurin go on their way to a wild, dark, dangerous trek, with so many dangerous creatures and evil to battle all along the way.  They learn more about the other clans, including the Missing, the evil Gods, etc; and meet new friends, such as Mali and Zox.

This was an exciting non-stop action filled story, but my mixed feelings are based on the so many details, which got confusing at times, especially with a lot of changes in the lands and evil beings. Everyone was trying be a step ahead of the enemies, who were constantly trying to kill them, with Yaz being pulled away from her friends a lot.    What I did love about the story was Yaz being a great heroine, and her fabulous friends that we spend a lot of time with.

This is a difficult review to do, since there is so much that happens from start to finish, and to tell too much more would be spoilers.  As I had noted previously, The Girl and the Mountain was a fantasy in a different kind of world that is beyond normal.  The cruel conditions, the dangerous people, the constant battles and the need to survive keeps us engrossed into this story.  I will say there is sort of a cliffhanger at the end.  If you enjoy fantasy, you can never go wrong with Mark Lawrence. I suggest you read The Girl and the Mountain.

Yes, I have to save the world, but my priority has now become rescuing my sister from the Underworld. While there are many questions still to be answered about my long-lost twin, I know I will not win this battle without her by my side.

In the midst of all the doom and gloom, Carrick has become my beacon of shining light. Our connection unimaginable, my heart recognizes his as the other half of its whole. Inexplicable and deeper than one could ever imagine, the love I hold for him is forged by destiny, however ill-fated it may turn out to be.

And those are the feelings I must hold close…to keep me going. Because a painful lesson is on the horizon—betrayal never comes from your enemies.

A Battle of Blood and Stone is book four of the Chronicles of the Stone Veil series and is best enjoyed if read in series order.

•••••••

REVIEW:A BATTLE OF BLOOD AND STONE is the fourth instalment in Sawyer Bennett’s contemporary adult CHRONICLES OF THE STONE VEIL paranormal/urban fantasy series focusing on twenty-eight year old Finley Porter, and Carrick Byrne. A BATTLE OF BLOOD AND STONE should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the events and cliff hanger of book three THE EVOLUTION OF FAE AND GODS.

SOME BACKGROUND: All of her life Finley Porter has been treated for hallucinations but days before her twenty-eighth birthday Finley is pulled into a world of the Light and Dark Fae by a man who stirs something deep within our story line heroine. An end of the world prophecy declares our heroine the savior, and in this Finley struggles with her fated destiny. As the gods watch the prophecy play out, some take it upon themselves to interfere where they do not belong.

Told from first person perspective (Finley) and third person (Carrick) A BATTLE OF BLOOD AND STONE picks up immediately after the events and cliff hanger of book three wherein Carrick remains missing, and Finley continues to prepare for her role and fated destiny. Struggling to remain under the protection of Demi-gods and daemons, Finley is desperate to locate the the ‘Blood Stone’ purported to give the user immortal powers but a desperation brought about in an effort to keep the stone out of the hands of the Dark Fae. As Finley and Carrick, Carrick’s brothers Maddox and Lucien, and daemons Boral and Zaid head to a magical island to retrieve the missing stone, lives are lost, and our intrepid ‘Scooby gang’ is no further ahead but falling farther behind.

Like the previous instalments, A BATTLE OF BLOOD AND STONE is a complex, detailed and riveting entry in Sawyer Bennett’s Chronicles of the Stone Veil. As the prophecy begins to take shape, Finley is desperate to reach into the Underworld, in an effort to make contact with someone from her past. Sawyer Bennett pulls the reader into an exciting and wonderful story line of revelations, betrayal and secrets, power and control that ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

The first in her new On My Own series is a hit in more ways than one. For a hopeless romance reader like myself, this new adult/young adult book was really fun to read.

When I read the blurb for the book, I was thinking that it was going to be another killer story about a one-night stand that turned into an insta love. I was so wrong. Now don’t get me wrong, this definitely turns into love, but its more than an insta love story. Dillion and Elise truly hit it off, their chemistry is real and its oh so sweet. C.A.R stories always have underlining layers to them, depth and emotions that her readers can relate to.

My One Night is a reader of what college was, and what we all wanted it to be like. Growing, changing, parties with friends, drinking and doing stupid things just for the heck of it. Being young and not knowing what you want to do with the rest of your life. Dillion and Elise struggle like any young person would with the possibility of finding “the one” and that leads to fear and mistakes.

Then, when things finally seem all good, life comes in and kicks you in the face, Dillion’s past comes knocking and poor Elise is struck with tragedy that rocks her to her core. Can the new pair face their fears and move forward, or will the bumps of life knock them down?
