ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 23, 2022

Two witnesses. One heinous crime. A future together is against all odds.

Fate put them in the same place at the wrong time. That moment landed them in the crosshairs of one of the country’s most dangerous men. And keeping Dr. Willow Barnhill alive became Andre’s only focus.

But the feisty brunette didn’t just wake up the protector in him. She set him on fire. And Andre made the epic mistake of dreaming about a future.

Yet, he knows women don’t love men with pasts like his. Especially when he learns that he stands for everything she fought so hard to forget.

A mutual contact holds the secret of his ugly career. And if Willow learns about it, Andre will be the last person she will want coming to her rescue.

But he will never leave her unguarded. Even if that means standing in as her husband. And selling his soul to the man who can make or break him.

Keeping her safe is all that matters. He’s determined to stop a deadly drug lord’s attack because a shot at the future with her is worth the ultimate sacrifice.

REVIEW:Andre Navarro, ex Marine Corps sniper now working for Agile Security-Rescue, is living and breathing the job, he doesn’t have time for relationships..

I love Andre, he’s a man you’d want beside you in a crisis. We find out in the book why he doesn’t do relationships. He’s calm, considerate and a no nonsense man.

Dr Willow Barnhill can’t believe she’s in the middle of a war zone! Witnessing a drugs hit, and then being whisked away was not how her day intended to end! Willow for me was a great character, a strong character with a good sense of justice, she keeps her head and doesn’t break easily.

I liked how we get both characters POV’s (points of view) laughed at their inner dialogues and held my breath when the danger closed in.

Fast paced action all the way through this book, plenty of plot and a few twists along the way will keep you reading this book. Part of a series, this is book three, I’ve not read the previous books, and I don’t think it matters where you start. But I’m definitely interested in reading the previous books in this series.

Throughly enjoyed the interaction between Andre and Willow. Their emotions might have stemmed from being in close quarters with one another, but it soon becomes apparent that they need one another for so much more.

But can she break past that wall Andre has built around his heart? And what happens when the danger has passed?

A highly recommended read if you like an action paced adventure.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 9, 2022

Only a bad girl enters a monster’s house.

Julieta Suarez is a cartel princess. She’s beautiful, alluring, and incredibly off-limits.

Her father placed her under my protection while she goes to college in my territory.

She’s a temptation and the ultimate sin. Touching her means war.

I’m supposed to be keeping her safe, not lusting after her every move.

There’s something about the way she smiles and laughs and teases. We’re living together, and it’s agony whenever she parades herself around my home.

It’s like my mind can’t control my hands when I press them against her hips.

But she’s hiding something. A dark past. A history of broken bones and shattered bodies. Little white pills in plastic baggies.

I’ll pry each and every dirty secret from her pretty little lips and make her beg for me to keep going.

REVIEW:SHATTERED PRINCE is the second instalment in B.B. Hamel’s contemporary, adult DARK MAFIA ROMANCE series-a spin off from the author’s THE OLIGARCHS series. This is Texas Mafioso Don Carmine Falsone, and cartel princess Julieta ‘Jules’ Suarez’s story line. SHATTERED PRINCE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading book one BITTER PLEDGE for back story; some of the characters from The Oligarchs cross over for cohesion and familiarity.

WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Carmine and Jules) SHATTERED PRINCE follows cartel princess Julieta ‘Jules’ Suarez as she attends her first year of college in San Antonio, Texas. Hired to ‘guard’ the cartel princess, Mafia Don Carmine Falsone finds himself falling for a woman who may be as broken as our story line hero but Jules’ past is about to catch up to our story line heroine, when vengeance and blackmail force Jules to betray the man with whom she is falling in love. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Jules and Carmine, and the potential fall-out as past sins come full circle, revealing secrets and lies.

Jules Suarez is the only survivor of an attack years before but a survivor who battles the daily pain and suffering of what happened and why. Carmine Falsone is desperate for revenge against the person who destroyed his life but revenge comes at a cost to everyone involved.Hoping to rebuild the Falsone crime family, Carmine finds himself working from the bottom up.

The relationship between Jules and Carmine begins as guardian and ward. Carmine Falsone struggles with his attraction to a woman whose father could destroy our story line hero but Jules is more worried about past sins destroying the people she loves. Blackmailed and bruised, Jules must come to a decision to reveal the truth. The $ex scenes are intimate, seductive and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Capri and Mal (Bitter Pledge 1), as well as Oligarchs Maxim, Nervosa and Roman; Smierc Gang leader Cezary; crime lord Mauro Balestra, and Julieta’s father Alejandro Suarez, and Jule’s bodyguard Oscar.

SHATTERED PRINCE is a story of secrets and lies, family, power and control, obsession and addiction, friendships and love. The premise is dark, gritty, dramatic and intense; the romance is captivating and seductive; the characters are broken, powerful and dynamic.

Jason’s just missing a pinky today. No, wait, two. And a toe. His son is dissolving in front of him, and David will do anything to save him.

But how can David save his son from something no one can see?

REVIEW: ARACHNISS by Shawn C Butler is a stand alone, adult, sci-fi, horror thriller focusing on children’s book author David Chambers in the months and years after a ‘viral pandemic’ has killed or maimed most of the world’s population. Known as the vanishing or erasure but formally called SHAS-selective human autosarcophagic syndrome-a virus of unknown origins, SHAS ‘eats’ away at body parts, sometimes eating away at the entire human existence.

WARNING: Due to the detailed and graphic nature of the story line premise including domestic abuse, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from third person perspective (David ) ARACHNISS follows children’s book author David Chambers as he struggles in both his personal and professional life but a struggle that also includes years of potential hallucinations in which spider-like creatures are slowly or sometimes quickly devouring the people of Earth. David believes he is going mad. Every day millions of people are losing body parts from an unknown cause, memories erased without knowing what happened or why, but at some point David will discover that his hallucinations are real, a virtual albeit actual front row seat, into the demise of the human existence. The majority of Earth’s population have accepted their fate as a side affect of the SHAS pandemic but a few ‘lucky’ inhabitants, including David Chambers and his neighbor Franzia, bear first-person witness to the truth that lies beyond the veil of human acceptance and comprehension.

ARACHNISS reads like a study in social psychology; a sociological study of humanity and human nature; a psychological test of power and control bearing similarities to the Milgram Yale Obedience experiments of the 1960s. With a slight nod to more famous works of science fiction -War of the Worlds by HG Wells, Twilight Zone’s TO SERVE MAN episode, The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham, and Soylent Green by Harry Harrison-ARACHNISS is a graphic, detailed, haunting and complex story of artificial intelligence, alien invasion, human nature in opposition to everything around us, and the obliviousness of mankind. The thought provoking premise is dramatic and visceral; the characters are tormented, desperate, dismayed and vulnerable. ARACHNISS follows David Chambers as he must come to terms with those in charge, terms that would choose between life and death for the people he loves.

Heed my warning, ARACHNISS is a graphically detailed story line that will not be suitable for all readers.

As a relatively new author, one thing I’m constantly focused on is how to build the most compelling worlds for my readers. This means not just things that are cool or make you say “Wow!” when you’re supposed to be sleeping, but all the details that make a story and its characters feel real and thus relatable.  So, here are some of the rules I try to follow

Ten Sci-Fi World-Building Rules

As with all systems, you can probably come up with a hundred rules for world building, some vital, some trivial, and spend the rest of your writing life making sure you’re doing things “right.” There is no absolute right in science fiction world building, but there are pretty basic rules that will help you avoid obvious issues that will cost you readers.

The following are ten of those rules, which are a bit random because they reflect where I am in my writing career and process. A year ago, I probably focused on more basic issues. A year from now, I’ll be worried about something else, like what to do with all this money (buy one gumball, or two?). These are the ten that most concern me in my current WIPs.

1 / Know why you’re building worlds in the first place

All of my published works take place on Earth within 100 years of the present, in locations you can find on a map today (or close). The world building for these books was therefore the minimum necessary to encompass new technology, politics and the occasional alien invasion. I wanted this proximity to reality because each book is clearly about today’s society and/or warnings for things to come. You, however, might want to escape the planet, solar system, universe and time-space continuum entirely. Which is great. Just keep in mind that the more you leave the known, the greater obligation you have to build a world the reader can understand…and appreciate.

So ask yourself, are you building a world because it’s a cool way to procrastinate, and it’s fun, or because that’s what you need to tell the story? Neither answer is correct, but the more time you spending building the less time you spend writing…unless you’re building a world that will be used for multiple works, in which case, build away.

2  / Be internally consistent

Whether you’re writing fantasy or science fiction, the structure and behavior of your world should remain consistent by whatever set of rules you’ve defined for that world. If they’re not, you’re going to lose readers and, if you care, get worse reviews.

In Dune, there are rules about (not having) computers and artificial intelligence that allow for the semi-religious power dynamic of the books (not to mention the dependence on spice for navigation in space). Frank Herbert can’t then have robots magically appear later on to solve some poorly thought-out plot issue.

In Star Wars, you can’t jump straight from one point to another in space without running into things, which at least retroactively explains why the Kessel Run record was expressed in distance and not time (using the shortest safe route). The same franchise runs into massive consistency problems in later installments when, for instance, we learn that you can fly any ship into another at “lightspeed” (which in Star Wars is much faster than the speed of light) and destroy it, making it obvious that you could have obliterated the Death Star or anything else just by ramming it with a small ship. This breaks the plotline of almost every Star Wars film.

So, if you give readers a rule, you need to follow it unless there’s a clear and rational reason not to, and all other rules should make sense in that context. To understand how hard this is, look at Marvel’s Avengers. It’s practically impossible to keep clear which superhero has which relative power because they keep changing according to the needs of a movie or scene. We overlook this because we love the movies, but you probably won’t be as lucky in your books…

3 / If it’s in the near future, there should be a clear path from here to there

In writing Run Lab Rat Run, I had in mind a series of prequels that explained how the world got to where it was (as a hierarchical genetic dystopia), and thus left a lot of this backstory out of the book. A few readers asked how all this madness happened, and I realized that (absent the prequels), I’d left the backstory too vague. I can’t fix that now, but in future novels, this will be a key checklist item for me. Meanwhile, the prequels are coming!

4 / If it’s in the distant future or after a disaster that breaks the connection between the past and present, that should be clear

This is rarely a problem, as authors love to write about disasters / end of the world / plagues / meteors / viruses / invasions / loud noises that result in the rapid decline of society so they can talk about a woman and her dog lost in the radioactive wastelands of wherever, but it’s vitally important that you as an author understand what happened, when, why and how it impacts the world of your story–and communicate enough of this to give the reader an anchor.

Don’t get me wrong; sometimes this horrific event is the very thing you want to hide. In Planet of the Apes, the surprise is that the planet of brainy but mean apes is …Earth! Spoiler? Hmm. Anyway, you might be intentionally hiding parts of the world’s history to allow for this type of reveal, but it should still be very clear how the world got from A to B (at least by the end). I’m assuming the apes drank too much Red Bull.

5 / No matter what the world looks like, your story should be more about people / beings and the obstacles they face than the technology itself

I remember reading Larry Niven’s short stories, including one about how someone died inside an allegedly impenetrable General Products hull. But even with a black hole, killer gravity, an invincible ship and concerns about warranty violations, the story is still about a guy trying to solve a problem before he dies. Which is basically the same story as The Martian, where we care about Mark Watney a lot more than the technology he’s trying to salvage.

6 / You should have a massive backstory that never goes in your book

Because this gives your world a feeling of fullness / richness that you don’t get if there’s just a skeleton and no flesh. In world building articles, they’ll often talk about this in terms of hard vs. soft world building, which is different from hard vs. soft science fiction. Hard SF concerns itself heavily with science and the details of technology, while soft SF tends to use technology and science as (important) background that’s not central to the story. Hard world building is about how much of the world you know and show to the reader (a lot), whereas soft world building means more is implied and less is shown. I tend to think that even if you’re writing soft SF and doing soft world-building, you should still know far more about the world than the reader does.

The challenge here is, of course, that you’ve built this cool world and you want to show it to everyone. Trust me, almost no one cares. Share the parts that move the story forward and hide the rest. If you want to add adjunct materials to your website, great (I have a massive glossary for Run Lab Rat Run), but leave it out of the book. The story will move faster, the reader will stay more engaged, and your books will do better.

Why develop all this if you’re not showing it? Because you need to know how, when, where and why things happen even if the reader doesn’t. Otherwise, you’ll have trouble fleshing out the story and remaining internally consistent (See #2).

7 / The same is true of characters

Meaning, you should know the backstory of your characters even if the reader doesn’t need to. Where did they go to space laser college? Did they graduate with a minor in Babble Fish? What’s the scar from? Is they cybernetic right arm haunted or just made by the lowest bidder? Do they have past trauma their working through, and how does it affect them in your story? Do they prefer Twizzlers or Red Vines (there is a right answer, and it rhymes with lead mines).

Whenever I read something by Margaret Atwood, for instance, I know she knows way more about the characters than she’s telling, and that brings them to life. You know, until they die horribly. And then you’re really sad about that.

8 / If you’re doing hard science fiction, get your science right

Let me correct that: If you’re writing anything that is based on fact, even if it’s only the facts in your world, get it right. Don’t leave the reader picking up your bad math, physics, chemistry, laser optics or (in fantasy) spells. That’s not their job. This is especially true if you’re writing in areas that have…hobbyists. Enthusiasts? For instance, never screw up military ranks, military history, guns (even space guns), gravity, relativistic math, time travel paradox magicology, genetics, etc. At least one of your readers is going to have a PhD in that thing, and they’ll let everyone know you screwed up.

9 / In soft SF, the feel of your world matters more than the details (but see #2)

And because the feel of your world and its characters matter more than detailed scientific exposition, I’d suggest changing the minimum number of things from present reality and culture to tell your story. If having nineteen genders isn’t relevant or important, then leave it out. If you’re not comfortable changing languages and dialects, don’t. Tell your story using the world you build; don’t let the world take over your story. For instance, I love the lingo in Clockwork Orange and Blade Runner, but I try to minimize linguistic quirks in what I write so I’m not constantly explaining what a word means. Change a few things that matter, and move on. A little goes a long way.

10 / Minimize jargon, abbreviations, acronyms, etc.

One thing I know is technically “wrong” about Run Lab Rat Run is that there will be far more changes in language than I present in the book (whether my predicted future comes to pass or not). The reason is simple; if you’re not a native of that future world, you’ll need a while to learn the language, culture, usage, etc., and you don’t have time for full-immersion language class in the middle of your book. Your novel isn’t Lord of the Rings (sorry), where you can spend time developing entire languages and the reader will go along for the ride. They probably won’t. They won’t even look at a glossary if you put it in the book. You’ll just frustrate and lose your audience. For instance, I used “WIP” in the intro paragraphs (for Work in Progress). Many probably knew what it meant, but many didn’t, and I didn’t gain anything by using the acronym.

11 / Have a Little Fun

World building is a blast, and a great way to procrastinate. Don’t focus just on the serious stuff. What changes / new things are in this world that your reader will find humorous, disgusting or both? Put some of that in there. Science Fiction is about imagining alternate worlds and futures, including all of their glorious absurdity. If your dominant species is dogs, there should be some butt sniffing and dry humping because that’s what dogs do. If it’s about genetic engineering, like some of my books, then there’s going to be some random, stupid, irresponsible genetic experimentation that’s worth a joke or two (e.g., the sex model references in RLRR). Include eleven items in a list of ten. Get crazy.

In Blade Runner’s infamous “I only do eyes scene,” a replicant eyeball is placed on a man’s shoulder. It’s disturbing, threatening, and darkly funny, but it also reveals how truly synthetic the replicants are. In The Martian, we learn that you can’t grow potatoes on Mars without poop, which is both funny and pretty essential to not dying. If you’re enjoying your world, your readers will too. Unless they’re Vogons, in which case, run before the poetry starts.

Other Resources

It might surprise you to know that I’m not the first one to write about world building in science fiction. Here are some other articles that do a good job, especially the John Fox one. Most of them conflate SF with Fantasy as if all speculative fiction is just one big blob, but the rules are pretty much the same (just replace magic with science or vice versa).

Thanks your time. I look forward to hearing about your new worlds.

Peace, Shawn

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 1, 2022.

Minor league player Stone Dumelin lost his younger brother when the Titans’ team plane went down. He never expected the phone call that followed.

After a shoulder injury put my NHL career on ice, I resigned myself to the fact I’d never see my way out of the minor league again. As my career faded, my estranged brother’s star shot into orbit as the first line left winger for the Pittsburgh Titans. But when the team’s plane crashed returning home one night, his light was snuffed out, and I was given the opportunity of a lifetime.

Now I’m in Pittsburgh, playing for the Titans, and face-to-face with my dead brother’s ghost at every turn. His locker, his legacy, his persistent and annoyingly gorgeous attorney who won’t stop contacting me about his estate, even though I’ve demanded she leave me alone.

Harlow Alston would be extremely appealing if she wasn’t so aggravating. Only…that’s a complete lie. She pushes all the right buttons for me, and as much as I want her to quit pestering me about Brooks’s estate, I find myself intrigued by the fiery redhead who can’t take no for an answer. And the more I learn about Harlow, the more I find she might be the key to understanding who Brooks really was, and who I want to be.

I’ve got a second shot at a career I thought I’d lost and the opportunity to build something real with Harlow, but can I find strength to move forward or will my past dictate my future?

••••••

REVIEW:STONE is the second instalment in Sawyer Bennett’s contemporary, adult PITTSBURGH TITANS hockey, romance series-a spin off from the author’s ARIZONA VENGEANCE series. This is left winger Stone Dumelin, and attorney Harlow Alston’s story line. STONE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

NOTE: If you have not read the author’s Arizona Vengeance series, there may be spoilers in my review. Most of the events of STONE run parallel to, and cross over with the events of book one BADEN.

SOME BACKGROUND: Several weeks earlier, a devastating plane crashed claimed the lives of the entire Pittsburgh Titans hockey team including coaches and staff. Rebuilding the team, owner Brienne Norcross, offered positions to one-time professional and semi-pro players, including our story line hero.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Stone and Harlow) STONE follows the building romance and relationship between left winger Stone Dumelin, and attorney Harlow Alston. Stone Dumelin lost his younger brother Brooks in the plane crash that claimed the lives of the Pittsburgh Titans professional hockey team but when the new owner offered Stone a position on the rebuilding team, Stone struggled with what was and what will never be but an insistent attorney for his brother’s estate forces Stone to look at the bigger picture, a picture of which Stone knew little about. Enter attorney Harlow Alston, and the woman with whom Stone will fall in love. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Stone and Harlow, and the potential fall-out as Stone struggles with secrets revealed, and his position in the life of Harlow Alston.

Stone Dumelin had been estranged from his younger brother Brooks for many years, an estrangement forced and built by someone they both knew. Unable to forgive himself or his brother Stone struggles going forward until Harlow reveals some truths, and the special place Stone had always held in his brother’s life. Harlow Alston battles her own demons on a daily basis but the loss of Brooks means more than anyone ever knew. Hoping to ease the suffering of Brooks’ brother Stone, Harlow offers up some friendship and advise, watching from the sidelines in case Stone’s life implodes.

The relationship between Stone and Harlow begins in the aftermath of the plane crash that took the life of Brooks Dumelin. Harlow is a representative for the estate of Brooks Dumelin, and Stone struggles with the demons that continue to drive a wedge between the once tight-knit brothers. As Stone slowly discovers the truth about what happened and why, Harlow becomes his angel and support when things spiral out of control. The $ex scenes are passionate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting characters include the members of the Pittsburgh Titans: Gage Heyward, Coen Highsmith, head coach Matt Keller, and team owner Brienne Norcross, as well as goalie coach Baden Oulett. We are introduced to Stone’s parents Mason and Nancy Dumelin, and his aunt Bethany; Harlow’s parents Robert and Celia, and Harlow’s assistant Bonita.

STONE is a story of family and fractured relationships, betrayal and trust; obsession and greed; struggled and loss. The character driven premise is emotional, revealing and tragic; the romance is intimate and edgy; the characters are edgy and dynamic.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 25, 2022

The storm.
The man.

Both come without warning.

My heart opens to Cooper Haywood the moment we meet. How can it resist? He’s charming, devastatingly handsome, and sweeps me off my feet before I realize the impact he’s making. And then it’s too late.

We fall too fast to worry about the consequences.
We love so hard that we ache when we’re apart.

Even though I have a past that still haunts me and he has a future that could put us at risk, none of that matters when we’re together.

Until it does.
And then everything changes.

Although the best thing he ever gave me now calls me Mommy, I can’t help but wonder if Cooper Haywood and that fateful storm were one and the same.

••••••

REVIEW:This is a new author to me and one I’d not heard of before. This story is told in three parts no cliffhanger, and as Cooper likes to quote its his life before and after meeting Story.

Cooper Haywood has it all, but he’s constantly fighting with his family, he’s generous, thoughtful and genuine (not at all like his family) I liked we got to see his side of the story.

Story Salenger is a great character, not coming from a great background it’s made her see things in a different light, but I wouldn’t call her bitter, she’s resilient, she’s resourceful and she was great to read about.

There is drama, heartache and sadness. But there is also joy, love (of a different kind) and we get to see how each character has grown through the book.

First part of the book: I loved, it told of their story, how close and how wrapped up in one another they were (almost instalove feel)
Second part of the book: I found a little slower and a bit repetitive.

The third and final part of this book: Not nearly as long as I would of liked. But when they finally catch up with one another, I couldn’t put it down.

Secrets and hidden pasts weren’t really necessary in my opinion (felt they were for drama purposes) the storyline was strong enough to carry it without them.

So will I recommend this book? Definitely. It’s really well written, thought out and carried out with lots of care and consideration.

I’m going to add this author to my ever growing list of new and to watch authors.

Description:

On her first day in the new house, a large, slobbering Saint Berdoodle wanders in. Molly winds up taking on the responsibility of training Noodle since his owner is too busy to do the job. On one of their daily beachside walks, Noodle digs up a severed hand. Once Molly alerts the police and they run a background check on her, she’s an immediate suspect–after all, Noodle’s testimony to clear her name won’t hold much water in court.

To prove her innocence, Molly must rely on instincts keener than a canine’s to sniff out the real killer. But when Molly’s life is put in danger, will her two very loyal pups be able to rescue her?

Review:

A Deadly Bone to Pick by Peggy Rothschild is a stand-alone mystery novel.  Molly Madison (our heroine) has just moved with her golden retriever, Harlow to a small beachside town, Pier Point, California. Molly is a former police officer and P.I., and after the death of her husband, she plans to start over, becoming a dog wrangler.  Turns out, Molly is very good training dogs, and as she meets her friendly neighbors, and she gets off to a great start.

However, on the first day she moved in, a big slobbering Saint Berdoodle, stands outside her door, wanting to come in. Molly meets one of her neighbors, who explains that Noodle (the dog) is always walking into people’s houses, as he is an escape artist, when his owner (emergency room doctor) is away working long hours at the hospital. Molly, of course, takes it upon herself to train Noodle, after getting permission from the doctor.

Molly takes Harlow and Noodle on their daily walk on the beach, and Noodle finds a severed hand; she calls the police.  She meets two detectives, who question her, one being nice and cute, and the other a mean and nasty. In a short time, it will be discovered that Molly was a suspect in the death of her husband, who had been murdered; but the real murderer was found, exonerating her; the bad detective kept pushing that she might be responsible for all the bad things happening in town.  Molly doesn’t want to get involved, but her police training makes her look into finding clues.

While the mystery remains, it was nice to see Molly become friendly with some of her neighbors, helping train their dogs, and teach a young girl. I thought that was a fun part of the story, especially with so many dog tips along the way.  Most of all I loved both Noodle and Harlow.

What follows is an exciting, fun cozy mystery in a town filled with secrets that will put Molly’s life in danger.  I did like some of the secondary characters, especially the good cop, and some other neighbors.  Harlow and Noodle were so great with Molly, and it was fun to see other dogs benefiting from her expertise. A Deadly Bone to Pick was an excellent story that was very well written by Peggy Rothschild.  The last half of the book was tense and exciting. If you like mystery suspense stories, you should read A Deadly Bone to Pick.

ABOUT The BOOK: Release Date March 1, 2022

The Castillo Family: Follow Rafael, Matteo, Javier and their nephew Santos a billionaire family they made their fortune in the construction business. When it comes to building relationships all their money can’t help them when it comes to women who want what money can’t buy.

Javier Castillo might be a gorgeous, brilliant billionaire—but he’s also a massive a$$hole. His only redeeming quality is how much he loves his baby daughter. A daughter he wasn’t aware existed until her grandmother dumped her on him like she was returning lost luggage. Her mother is dead and her grandmother decided she couldn’t take care of her after all. Okay, it’s kind of amazing the way he didn’t flinch from the baby thrust into his arms. He wants the best for her but doesn’t believe I am it. I’m the nanny with a thirty-day trial hanging over my head.
He’s trying to get me to quit, I just know it. Except I refuse to go easily or quietly, no matter how mean or rude he gets. There’s no way I am going to mess up this job. If I do, I’ll be homeless again. I’m positive he’s just worried I’ll develop a crush on him and become a clingy, lovesick pain. So why do I feel his eyes on me when he thinks I’m not paying attention? What about overhearing him warning a man away from me with a feral, jealous possessive air?
It’s wishful thinking—poor, plain, fat women like me don’t get the gorgeous billionaire like him anywhere but in the movies.
I’m here for his daughter, not him. Except before long it isn’t just his daughter who has stolen my heart, and I wonder if maybe I’m not imagining things after all

REVIEW:JAVIER is the second instalment in Fiona Murphy’s contemporary, adult THE CASTILLO FAMILY erotic, romance series focusing on the Castillo Billionaire family. This is thirty-six year old, attorney Javier Castillo, and twenty-four year old nanny Esperanza ‘Hope’ Martinez’s story line. JAVIER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous storylines is revealed where necessary.

WARNING: There are two familial suicides off page that may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Javier and Hope) JAVIER follows the building romance and relationship between thirty-six year old attorney Javier Castillo, and twenty-four year old nanny Esperanza ‘Hope’ Martinez. Hope Martinez is desperate for a job when she overhears a group of nanny’s complaining about Javier Castillo, and his struggle to find a nanny he likes. Javier is a single father to a five month old daughter, the result of a one-night stand months before but Javier wants a specific kind of nanny, and Hope is all kinds of wrong for our story line hero. Refusing to keep Hope as his daughter’s nanny for the long haul, Javier offers a one month trial wherein Hope must leave at the end of thirty days. What ensues is the building but acrimonious relationship between Hope and Javier, and the potential fall-out as Javier struggles with his attraction to Hope Martinez, a woman who is falling in love with Javier and his infant daughter Ava.

Javier Castillo doesn’t want Hope Martinez as his daughter’s nanny because of his attraction to a woman who probably wants marriage and family. Javier doesn’t do long term relationships, and his need for Hope is palpable and strong. Hope Martinez knows Javier is barely holding onto to his control but his treatment of our heroine is heart breaking and wrong. The emotional back and forth is meant to push Hope out of the lives but Hope refuses to leave, having fallen in love with Javier and his daughter.

The relationship between Javier and Hope begins as employee and employer but a relationship that quickly turns volatile and unfriendly. Javier’s attraction to Hope is manifested with anger and reluctance. Javier knows it is only a matter of time before he crosses the line from which there will be no return. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic, seductive and intense with some scenes of spanking.

We are reintroduced to Javier’s brother Rafael and his wife Carrie, as well as their mother Elizabeth, and grandfather Luis Castillo. Hope’s large extended family is present but mostly off-page.

JAVIER is a story of family and relationships, support and acceptance, revelations and surprises, hope and love. The premise is entertaining and captivating; the romance is passionate and edgy; the characters are determined and energetic.

REVIEW:RAFAEL is the first instalment in Fiona Murphy’s contemporary, adult THE CASTILLO FAMILY erotic, romance series. This is thirty-eight year old, businessman Rafael Castillo, and twenty-six year old Carrie Whitney’s story line.

NOTE: RAFAEL is the re-release of the author’s Rafael’s Woman with additional content and a change in perspective.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Carrie and Rafael) RAFAEL focuses on the building relationship between thirty-eight year old, businessman Rafael Castillo, and twenty-six year old Carrie Whitney. Carrie Whitney has been raising her thirteen year old twin brothers Riley and Elliott since the death of their mother seven years earlier but the twins are beginning to act out and causing problems. Having moved to Dallas for better employment opportunities, Carrie finds herself at the end of her rope when her brothers destroy thousands of dollars of Rafael Castillo’s construction property, money she hopes she will be able to repay but the shocking price tag sends Carrie into a spiral where she reveals everything about her past and more. Rafael has no patience for people who destroy his property, and he is determined to punish the young boys to the fullest extent of the law but Rafael’s attraction to Carrie and our heroine’s story begin to melt the ice around Rafael’s heart, and he reconsiders his plans for the immediate future. Offering Carrie a job as the property manager of one of his buildings, a new place to stay for Carrie and the boys, and the opportunity for her brothers to work off their debt, Rafael begins a slow seduction of our story line heroine, a seduction predicated upon $ex and nothing more. What ensues is the building relationship between Carrie and Rafael, and the potential fall-out as Carrie’s heart wants something more than Rafael is willing to offer.

Rafael Castillo is all about control; a businessman who doesn’t do romantic relationships but Carrie Whitney offers a friends with benefits option, a relationship wherein Rafael finds himself struggling with jealousy and rage at every turn. Rafael’s attraction to Carrie is immediate and intense, and discovering Carrie is offering a relationship without love, Rafael jumps at the opportunity, only to realize that his heart wants something he can no longer control. Refusing to accept that he has fallen in love, Rafael slowly pulls away from the woman that owns his heart knowing Carrie would never be accepted into the world in which he lives. Carrie quickly realizes that her life is no longer her own but accepts Rafael’s need for control, often backing down when she is accused of doing something wrong. A bit of a doormat, Carrie is desperate for Rafael’s touch, she is willing to beg for all the wrong reasons. The $ex scenes are intimate, passionate, erotic and intense.

We are introduced to Carrie’s twin brothers Riley and Elliott, and her best friend Jennifer; Rafael’s brother Javier who is often pushing all of our hero’s buttons, as well as their mother Elizabeth Castillo, and several employees who work for the Castillo Corporation/ Castillo Construction. Javier’s story is next.

RAFAEL is a fast paced story of power and control, obsession and attraction, insta lust, acceptance and love. The premise is engaging; the romance is provocative and passionate but questionable on so many levels; the characters are desperate and charismatic.

I will suggest another round of edits as there are a number of spelling and grammar errors as well as missing words. As this is a re-release and refurbished edition, there should not have been so many issues.

Due to commitment issues I have lived in many different cities and my favorite is Chicago but I have managed to settle into Austin and perhaps my commitment issues are behind me.

I have enjoyed reading from a very young age and it wasn’t long before the children books bored me and I read the books my mother enjoyed Stephen King and Dean Koontz and I didn’t sleep without the light on until I was about ten.

I came across my first Harlequin by accident and it was love at first read, no one died and happy endings? It was a whole new world and I loved it.

I wrote my first story at eight and everyone died, of course. Since then I would like to think I’ve gotten better and now I’m writing the happily ever afters I first fell in love with, with some hot sex thrown in along the way.

As a plus size woman myself, I have started writing the stories I always wanted to see myself in but never did. And now I’m ecstatic to give BBWs the happily ever afters with hot Alphas I want to read.

Let’s see…where to begin…

I’m inching up on the BIG 4-0. The gray hairs are doubling what seems like daily, and the wrinkles and laugh lines are more pronounced than ever.

I have an amazing husband (Married just over 15 years.)

We have two boys we’re doing our best to raise as respectful gentleman.

I have a master’s degree in criminal justice which I used to work as a juvenile probation office until deciding to write full-time in June of 2019. So that means there’s usually always some criminal/law element to my novels.

If I’m not writing; I’m reading.

My favorite genres recently are bully/reverse harem and enemies to lovers. Maybe I’m reliving my traumatic teen years through the girls who actually end up with the boys. (Not that I would change my history since it’s gotten me exactly where I need to be!)

I love coffee. I miss carbs. Music is LIFE. I try not to be too serious.
