ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 20, 2022

At thirty-nine years old, I have my life together.
I’m a successful photographer, own my own home, and thanks to a teenage pregnancy, I’m already an empty nester.

The only thing missing is love. And who has time for that?

That’s my thought process the day my daughter, Gracie, calls to tell me she’s bringing her roommate home with her for spring break.

Dax Shelton is charismatic, funny, and ridiculously sexy. And for some reason, whenever I’m with him, he aims all that charm my way.

I try to keep my space and not take him seriously, but when he pins me against the kitchen counter and whispers all the dirty things he wants to do to me, I can’t ignore him any longer.

So, at thirty-nine years old, I have a secret fling with a man seventeen years my junior.
Or at least I think it’s just a fling until our late nights become less about sex and more about our feelings, and I accidentally fall in love with my daughter’s roommate.

Things are about to get messy. Not only because Gracie won’t understand how I let this happen but because she’s in love with him too.

REVIEW:  GRACIE’S MOM is a contemporary, adult, stand alone, erotic, age-gap, forbidden romance between thirty-nine year old photographer and divorcee Abby Young , and twenty -two year old, college student Dax Shelton.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Abby and Dax) GRACIE’S MOM follows the forbidden, age-gap romance between thirty-nine photographer Abby Young, and twenty-two year old college student Dax Shelton. For four years Dax Shelton has lusted after his roommate’s mother, the woman that stirs something deep within our story line hero but Abby is thirty-nine years old, and struggles with the possible ramifications of an affair with a much younger man. Not only is Dax seventeen years younger but he is our heroine’s daughter Gracie’s roommate and crush. An affair ensues, our couple fall in love, but an attack against Dax leaves our hero dependant upon the woman with whom he had fallen in love. What ensues is the building romance and highly sexual relationship between Dax and Abby, and the potential fall-out when Abby’s daughter discovers her mother’s secret affair.

The relationship between Abby and Dax is one of mutual attraction but their Abby continues to struggle with their age difference, especially in the face of Dax being the same age as our heroine’s daughter. Dax fell in love with Gracie’s mother the first time they met but has bided his time, waiting for the right opportunity to seduce our story line heroine. The $ex scenes are erotic, passionate and intense.

We are introduced to Abby’s daughter Gracie, and Abby’s neighbor Joelle, as well as Dax’s best friend Kyson.

GRACIE’S MOM is a quick read; a fast paced, erotic story of forbidden love; a reverse, age-gap romance between a sexy younger man, and the woman with whom he had fallen in love. The premise is interesting and spicy; the romance is provocative and fun; the characters are energetic and determined.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 20, 2022

He’s a gorgeous former Interpol agent.

Tall, dark, and Italian.

He’s way out of her league, but when danger explodes around them, she finds herself on the run with the sexiest man she’s ever met.

CIA analyst Gabbi Hansley has a plan—escape her dysfunctional family, excel at her job, and build a safe, stable life for herself. Boring? Maybe, but she likes boring. When tasked to meet a security contractor and give him an encrypted drive, a quick, simple job goes terribly wrong.

Gabbi didn’t expect her contact to be the hottest man she’s ever seen. Nor was she expecting the bad guys who turn up and spray the restaurant with bullets.

After years of wading through the muck, dismantling mafia crime syndicates in Italy, former Anti-Mafia officer and Interpol agent Matteo “Hades” Mancini likes his job at Sentinel Security. He also knows he has nothing permanent to offer any woman, so he keeps things fun and temporary.

But when his dangerous past rears its head, he finds himself trapped with the tough, no-nonsense Gabbi, and on a second glance, he sees past her sensible exterior to the tempting woman beneath.

Now Gabbi and Matteo are in a race for survival. While they work to track down who’s after them, attraction burns hot and bright. Gabbi knows a man like Matteo won’t be interested in her for long, and she asks him to show her all the things she’s been missing in the bedroom. But the possessive need to keep her safe is growing in Matteo, and soon he has two mission objectives: take down the bad guys, and convince Gabbi Hansley that she’s his.

REVIEW:HADES is the second instalment in Anna Hackett’s contemporary, adult SENTINEL SECURITY erotic, romantic suspense series- a spin off from the author’s Norcross Security series. This is CIA analyst Gabbi Hansley, and former Interpol agent Matteo ‘Hades’ Mancini’s story line. HADES can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Gabbi and Matteo) HADES follows in the wake of an attack against our story line hero. Gabbi Hansley was on her way home when a fellow analyst asked for a favor, a favor that would place Gabbi in the direct line of fire. Matteo Mancini had made many enemies in his life but none more so than when he worked for the DIA-Direzione Investigative Antimafia group, a group known for hunting the mafia syndicates. With a target on their backs, Gabbi and Matteo are forced to work together in an effort to uncover the people responsible for the attacks, working together is about to push our couple together. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Gabbi and Matteo, and the potential fall-out as Gabbi struggles with issues of low self-esteem, believing to be a minor convenience for our story line hero.

Gabbi Hansley isn’t a CIA operative; she doesn’t do field work but finds herself working with the team at Sentinel Security. Betrayal from someone close forces Gabbi to choose sides in a war she knows nothing about. Matteo Mancini prefers to work alone but Gabbi refuses to stay behind when Matteo continues to place his life in danger. Falling for Gabbi was easy but Matteo must find a way to convince our heroine what they have is real.

The relationship between Gabbi and Matteo is one of immediate attraction but an attack by four gunman leaves our couple running for their lives. Forces to stay with the team, and of course, Matteo Mancini, Gabbi finds herself falling for a man whose own life is spiralling out of control. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are re-introduced to Nick’s fellow Sentinel Security specialists: boss Killian ‘Steel’ Hawke; former US Navy SEAL and CIA agent turned security specialist Nick ‘Wolf’ Garrick: former MI6 agent Hadley ‘Striker’ Lockwood; hacker Jet ‘Hex’ Adler and Bram ‘Excalibur’ O’Donovan, as well as the introduction of CIA agent Devyn, Cain aka Shade, and British billionaire Bennet Knightley. The requisite evil has many faces.

HADES is a story o betrayal and vengeance, power and control, espionage and danger, family and friendships, relationships and love. The fast paced, character driven premise is intriguing and captivating; the characters are powerful, determined and charismatic; the romance is seductive and passionate.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 22, 2022

I can’t remember anymore if my grandfather’s eyes were blue or green, but I’ll never forget the way they wrinkled at the corners when he laughed at one of his own jokes. Or the way they sparkled with mischief when he told me tales about the magical creatures that dwelled in the forest behind his humble Irish sheep farm—shy fairies who liked to eat tea biscuits, cruel witches who liked to eat children, a moody lake spirit with a taste for expensive gifts.

As a child, I believed every fantastical word. But when he warned me about the mute boy who also lurked in those woods, the one the priest had declared to be the spawn of Satan himself, I refused to listen. Kellen wasn’t evil. He was kind, and beautiful, and special, and hurting. He was my friend. And with every summer I spent stolen away with him in those enchanted woods, he grew to become so much more.

But when I return to Glenshire as an adult, grieving and engaged to someone else, all those legends quickly morph into nightmares.

My grandfather had been right about everything, especially the boy.

If only I had listened.

REVIEW: DEVIL OF DUBLIN is a contemporary, adult, stand alone, dark, erotic, Mafia romance shrouded in Irish folklore and magic. This is Kellen ‘Devil of Dublin’ Donovan, and Darby Collins’ story line.

WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise there may be triggers for more sensitive readers

Told from dual first person perspectives, covering several years in the life, DEVIL OF DUBLIN follows the building relationship between American Darby Collins, and Irishman Kellen Donovan. For several years, from the age of eight, Darby Collins and her mother would visit Ireland, where she would meet a young battered and bruised ten year old boy Kellen Donovan, a boy she believed had lived with the fairies but several years would pass wherein Darby lost her way, and Kellen continued to suffer at the hands of a man determined to destroy his soul. Years later, Darby would return to the magical land of fairy tales but the fairy tales were now stories of horror, and Darby was about to fall into the middle of a criminal nightmare. What ensues is the rebuilding relationship between Darby and Kellen, and the fall-out as the Russian Bratva, and Irish Mafia take aim at our story line couple.

The relationship between Darby and Kellen began when Darby was eight years old, and every year after, Darby would return with her mother, hoping to see the boy that had stolen her heart but life and death did their best to destroy our story line couple, leaving two broken souls whose lights no longer shined, in the wake of betrayal and abuse. Reuniting with Kellen, twenty-two year old, Darby knew her path going forward was beside the man that she loved but the path had never been easy, it was crooked, dangerous, magical and long. The $ex scenes are intimate, intense and heart breaking.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Darby’s mother and grandfather, and a curmudgeon uncle, as well as several members of the Russian Bratva, and Irish Mafia.

DEVIL OF DUBLIN is a story of betrayal and vengeance, power and control, abuse, assault and neglect, acceptance and love. The premise is dark and raw; the romance is heart breaking and emotional; the characters are broken, determined and struggling to survive.

Description:
Colby Mills once felt destined for a musical career, until tragedy grounded his aspirations. Now the head of a small family farm in North Carolina, he spontaneously takes a gig playing at a bar in St. Pete’s Beach, Florida, seeking a rare break from his duties at home.

But when he meets Morgan Lee, his world is turned upside-down, making him wonder if the responsibilities he has shouldered need dictate his life forever. The daughter of affluent Chicago doctors, Morgan has graduated from a prestigious college music program with the ambition to move to Nashville and become a star. Romantically and musically, she and Colby complete each other in a way that neither has ever known.

While they are falling headlong in love, Beverly is on a heart-pounding journey of another kind. Fleeing an abusive husband with her six-year-old son, she is trying to piece together a life for them in a small town far off the beaten track. With money running out and danger seemingly around every corner, she makes a desperate decision that will rewrite everything she knows to be true.

In the course of a single unforgettable week, two young people will navigate the exhilarating heights and heartbreak of first love. Hundreds of miles away, Beverly will put her love for her young son to the test. And fate will draw all three people together in a web of life-altering connections . . . forcing each to wonder whether the dream of a better life can ever survive the weight of the past.

Review:

Dreamland by Nicholas Sparks is another one of his excellent standalone novels. Dreamland has two POV’s that focus on Colby, and a different one focusing on Beverly.   We meet Colby, our hero, who runs a farm in North Carolina, with his sister, Paige and Aunt; he loves writing songs, but gave it up to assume his responsibility to be the head of the family and restore the farm.  While things seem to be working good, Colby, accepts a three-week gig at bar in St. Pete’s Beach, Florida with his sister and aunt, encouraging him to take a break.

While performing his music, he meets Morgan Lee, who also loves music, and plans to move to Nashville.  Colby finds himself falling hard for Morgan, who knows what she wants, coming from a wealthy family, musical education and a wonderful voice. Morgan and Colby begin to spend more time together, romantically and musically.  It was nice to see them write songs, with each helping each other with the words.  Colby thinks Morgan can become a big star, with her voice, and as they fall in love, she tries to convince him to join her in Nashville.   But an unexpected crisis will change everything.  Will Colby and Morgan find a way to be together?

The other POV, deals with Beverly, who is on the run with her six-year-old son, fleeing her abusive husband.  She begins a new life in a small town; living in a house, and finances are low.  Beverly knows she needs to get a job, and while Tommy is in school, she looks around for a cash paying job, since she left without her id.  Beverly knows her husband has contacts, and works for Homeland; she continues to be alert. Then she discovers unusual things in the house, as well as a truck that keeps stopping by the house; she panics and makes plans to run again.

Reading through the first half of the book, I was sort of confused, as to how these POV’s fit in the story.  But when we get closer to the last quarter, there is a major twist that throws us for a loop.

Dreamland is a wonderful story of responsibility, family, tragedy, music and love.  I loved Colby and Morgan together, as they made a wonderful couple, and their songwriting was terrific.  Beverly’s story was scary and tense, with a surprising twist. Dreamland was so very well written by Nicholas Sparks, which kept me unable to put the book down.  I suggest you read Dreamland.

Description:
Margot Noble needs some relief from the stress of running the family winery with her brother. Enter Luke: sexy, charming, and best of all in the too-small world of Napa, a stranger. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and Margot is delighted that she lucked into the perfect one-night stand she’ll never have to see again. That is, until the winery’s newest hire, Luke, walks in the next morning. Margot is determined to keep things purely professional, but when their every interaction reminds her of the attraction still bubbling between them, it proves to be much more challenging than she expects.

Luke Williams had it all, but when he quits his high-salary tech job in Silicon Valley in a blaze of burnout and moves back to Napa to help a friend, he realizes he doesn’t want to tell the world–or his mom–why he’s now working at a winery. His mom loves bragging about her successful son–how can he admit that the job she’s so proud of broke him? Luke has no idea what is next for him, but one thing is certain: he wants more from the incredibly smart and sexy woman he hooked up with–even after he learns she’s his new boss. But even if they can find a way to be together that wouldn’t be an ethical nightmare, would such a successful woman really want a tech-world dropout?

Set against a lush backdrop of Napa Valley wine country, nothing goes to your head as fast as a taste of love–even if it means changing all your plans.

Review:

Drunk on Love by Jasmine Guillory is another one of her sweet romantic standalone novels. We meet Margot Noble, who runs a winery in California Wine Country with her brother, Elliot.  Margot is the CEO, who handles marketing, wine tasting, parties; and her brother handles the land.  Because she has been overworking, planning on a special wine party, she is stressful due to her brother not happy about the plans; she ends up at her best friend (Sydney) restaurant/bar to relax.  A very handsome man enters the place, and in a short time they spend the evening talking, and ends up having a one-night stand, that was memorable; neither expecting to see each other again.

Luke Williams, quit his job and moves back to Napa, where is mother and best friend live.  He gets a temporary job, and when he meets the beautiful women at the bar, he is immediately attracted to her; as they spend the night together. But the next morning when he starts his new job, he is shocked to see the woman whom he spent the night with is indeed his new boss.  Margot was also shocked to see Luke, and goes out of her way to keep things professional, even though she still feels their chemistry. Luke offers to quit, but Margot convinces him to stay, as they do need help in the marketing area; despite their attraction, they both do their best to not act on those feelings.

I really liked all of the characters in this story; including Margot, Luke, Sydney, Elliot, Ashley, Taylor, just to name a few.  I loved the concept with the winery, and Margot’s plans for the party, and how wonderful they all were.  In time, Margot and Elliot will clear out the misunderstandings, which will open things in the winery even more.   When Luke has to quit to help his mother, both Margot and Luke finally act on their feelings, as they made a great couple, so much fun.

Drunk on Love is a sweet lighthearted wonderful romantic story, in a winery setting, with a couple that were afraid to admit their feelings, until things opened up and the chemistry was off the wall.  Margot and Luke were so very likable, as was their friends and family.  Drunk on Love was a fantastic story, so well written by Jasmine Guillory.

•••••••••

REVIEW: THE VIPER is the third instalment in JR Ward’s contemporary adult BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD: PRISON CAMP paranormal romance series-a spin off/interconnected series from the author’s Black Dagger Brotherhood. This is vampires Kanemille aka Kane, and Nadya’s story line. THE VIPER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from third person perspectives, following several intersecting paths, using present day and memories from the past, THE VIPER continues to focus on the relocation of, and the Brothers search for the illegal supernatural prison colony used by the former Glymera to control the so-called deviants of paranormal society. No longer under the control of the once powerful Glymera, the colony has become the epi-center of drugs for Caldwell, New York.

Approximately two hundred years earlier, vampire Kanemille was sentenced to the original prison colony for a crime he did not commit. Along with hundreds of vampires and wolvens, Kane suffered abuse and torture at the hands of those in charge but a fire was about to force Kane to choose between the ‘Shade’ or something else. With the only light in his life, a severely scarred female named Nadya, Kane chooses something else, in an effort to go back and rescue the female with whom he will fall in love but all does not go according to plan when the vampires and wolvens set a plan into motion to rescue and release the prisoners inside, a plan that begins to crumble at the hands of their former jailers.

Meanwhile, the wolven Callum is falling for the vampire Apex, a vampire who once thought he was in love with Kane, but as the world begins to implode, Callum is captured, and the fall-out threatens his sanity and the man with whom he was falling in love.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including several members of the BDB; the requisite cameo from the Scribe Virgin, as well as the return of Lucan and Rio (The Wolf), and The Jackal.

THE VIPER is a story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, ethereal magic and mystery, acceptance and love. The premise is heart breaking yet engaging-both Nadya and Kane’s back stories are dark and raw; the romance is emotional but struggles in the face of past betrayals: the characters are broken but battling to move forward.

My dirty little secret.

We fell for each other at Lancaster Prep. Sneaking around. Not wanting anyone to find out. He was my first love, my protector, my knight in shining armor. We were made for each other, and I truly believed he was my forever.

But then I did the unthinkable, and betrayed him in the worst possible way. I thought I lost him for good…

Until I saw him at my brother’s wedding. Now he’s older. Crueler. Unbearably handsome. We’re drawn to each other still, but will Spencer be there for me when I need him the most? Or did I ruin us once again?

•••••••••

REVIEW: PROMISES WE MEANT TO KEEP by Monica Murphy is a contemporary, adult, dark, erotic, romance story line set in the author’s Arranged Marriage / A MILLION KISSES IN YOUR LIFETIME / THINGS I WANTED TO SAY worlds. This is Spencer Donato, and Sylvie Lancaster’s story line. PROMISES WE MEANT TO KEEP can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary. Several characters cross over for back story and cohesion.

WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Sylvie and Spencer) PROMISES WE MEANT TO KEEP follows the frenemies to lovers, second chance relationship between Spencer Donato, and Sylvie Lancaster. Sylvie Lancaster has been in love with her brother’s best friend Spencer for as long as she can remember but Sylvie’s life has been difficult in the wake of a number of illnesses and problems including her mother’s need to suffocate and protect our story line heroine.Forced into a marriage with a man she did not love, an early death meant Sylvie would be free of her family’s charge. On her own for the first time in her life, Sylvie would come face to face with the man who has starred in her fantasies and dreams, a man who battles between head and heart with his attraction and need for our story line heroine. Enter Spencer Donato, and the man with whom Sylvie has fallen in love. What ensues is the rebuilding friendship and romance between Sylvie and Spencer, and the potential fall-out as Sylvie’s pas refuses to let go, a past that few people believed or acknowledge.

The relationship between Sylvie and Spencer is one of second chances, of a sorts, Having loved one another since the first time they met, Spencer struggled with Sylvie’s back and forth, off and on emotional instability, something with which everything battled including our story line heroine but all was not as it appeared to be, and the truth would reveal an obsession and madness directly at our story line heroine. Together without fear of repercussions from family and friends, Sylvie would regain her independence, something she needed to move on with her life. The $ex scenes are intimate, passionate and intense but I struggle with the use of a certain four-letter word, although only use once, more for show value than anything else.

Three is a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting characters, many of whom we meat in the previous story lines. We are introduced to Sylvie’s mother Sylvia and her father Augustus Lancaster; sister Carolina, and brother Whit and his new wife Summer.

PROMISES WE MEANT TO KEEP is a story of power and control, obsession and madness, betrayal and vengeance, acceptance and love. The premise is emotional and heart breaking; the romance is seductive and fated; the characters are broken, struggling but moving forward with their lives.

Description:
If there’s something Ravenna Chastain knows, it’s when to end things. And after she almost winds up the victim of a cult that believes she’s a witch, it’s easy to walk away from her dead-end career, ready for a new start. But where to find a job that would allow her to use her very specialized skill set? The answer is clear: she becomes a matchmaker.

But even a successful matchmaker can’t find someone for everyone, and Ravenna considers Ethan Sweetwater her first professional failure. After nine failed dates, Ravenna knows it’s time to cut Ethan loose. But Ethan refuses to be fired as a client—he needs one final date to a business function. Since Ravenna needs a date herself to a family event, they agree to a deal: she will be his (business) date if he will be her (fake) date to her grandparents’ anniversary celebration.

What Ethan fails to mention is that attending the business function is a cover for some industrial espionage that he’s doing as a favor to the new Illusion Town Guild boss. Ravenna is happy to help, but their relationship gets even more complicated when things heat up—the chemistry between them is explosive, as explosive as the danger that’s stalking Ravenna. Lucky for her, Ethan isn’t just an engineer—he’s also a Sweetwater, and Sweetwaters are known for hunting down monsters…

Review:

Sweetwater & the Witch by Jayne Castle is the 15th book in her Ghost Hunters series.  Having read the previous book in this series, I looked forward to reading this new book, even though I had not read the earlier books.   One day, if time ever allows, I might go back to some of those books This takes place in Illusion Town within Harmony, which is a colonized alien world, and the underground maze in Illusion Town, has weird paranormal activity/hallucinations, with many people never escaping.

We meet Ravenna Chastain, our heroine, at the start, when she was captured by an evil cult, who considered her a witch; Ravenna actually was a profiler for the police. She managed to use some of her fire ability to escape, with the police finally arriving to arrest the cult members.  Ravenna decided that she did not want to continue working at this dangerous job, and moved to Illusion Town and became a matchmaker.

Ravenna has a well-known client, Ethan Sweetwater, and wasn’t having any luck in finding a good match, with 9 unsuccessful tries.  When she tries to offer him a refund, he turns her down, and insists she find him someone else; with one last match, Ethan convinces her to be his fake date to an event, and she can monitor what he does wrong.  While waiting for Ethan to arrive for their date, a former date forces his way in and attempts to kill her, with her using her fire witch ability to stop him, and Ethan arriving in time to send the unconscious man elsewhere for the police to find him.  Ethan alerts Ravenna that the Guild Boss, needs him to do some espionage, and she is thrilled to help.

Slowly, the chemistry between them escalates, even if Ravenna denies her feelings, since matchmakers are not allowed to date a client.  Ethan, already knows he is falling hard for Ravenna, as she is the one for him.  I absolutely loved Harriet, the dust bunny, who is always with Ravenna and Ethan; they were a wonderful threesome.  ?  The danger escalates for Ravenna, as well as Ethan’s attempts to stop a dangerous enemy trying to gain control; both of them recognize that they are indeed a match, with sizzling chemistry between them.

What follows is an exciting mysterious, intense and romantic story, with a fantastic couple in Ethan and Ravenna, and little Harriet. There is a lot of non-stop action, as we race to the climax, with lives on the line.  To tell too much more would be spoilers, and I do not want to ruin it for you.

Sweetwater & the Witch was a very good paranormal mystery, great world-building, lots of fun, especially between Ravenna and Ethan, as well as Harriet.  I really loved Ravenna and Ethan together.  I enjoyed this story, which kept me glued to my kindle.  Sweetwater & the Witch was very well written by Jayne Castle.

“You can’t dump me,” Ethan Sweetwater said. “I’ve got a contract with this matchmaking agency. You owe me one more date.”

“To be clear,” Ravenna said, “I am not dumping you. I am trying to explain that I cannot help you.”

“I don’t believe it. When my nephew Jeff recommended you, he said you have the eye.”

“Your nephew met me one time, and that was several months ago, when I was doing criminal profiling, not matchmaking. This work is quite different.”

Actually, it was not all that different, she reflected. It turned out that criminal profiling had a lot in common with matchmaking. The emotional drivers were key.

“Maybe you’re not trying hard enough,” Ethan suggested. That was nothing less than an insult.

“I am a professional, Mr. Sweetwater,” She said coldly. “ I assure you I have given your case my closest attention. In fact, all four of us here at Ottoway, including Ms. Ottoway herself, have gone through the files several times trying to find good matches for you.”

She did not add that there were only two reason Ethan Sweetwater—aka the client from green hell—was still on the books. The primary one was the contract. It stipulated that he was to receive a minimum of ten matches. The second reason, of course, was that Bernice Ottoway, the proprietor of Ottoway Matchmakers, was desperate not to lose such a high-profile client. The Sweetwater name carried a lot of weight, not just in Illusion Town but throughout the four city-states. A successful match for a member of the notoriously private clan that controlled a huge chunk of the amber market would give Ottoway a major promotional hit. It also would do a lot for her career, Ravenna thought. Sadly, a successful outcome did not appear to be in the cards.

“We will be happy to refund your money and refer you to another agency,” Ravenna said. Mentally she crossed her fingers. Bernice Ottoway never returned a client’s money if she could help it, but surely she would understand that Ethan Sweetwater was a hopeless case.

“I don’t want to waste my time starting from scratch at another agency,” Ethan said. “I was assured that here at Ottoway the process would be efficient and professional.”

“It would have helped if you had been more forthcoming on the Ottoway questionnaire,” Ravenna said.

“Don’t try to blame this on me, Ms. Chastain.” I’m the client, remember? The customer is always right.”

He was standing in front of her desk. He reached down somewhat absently to scratch Harriet behind her ears. The dust bunny was in the process of rearranging the pens in the tray. She paused to chortle appreciatively. Ravenna stifled a groan. She and the entire staff at Ottoway might have a problem with Ethan, but Harriet’s relationship with him was just fine. Uncomplicated, she thought. Unlike me.

“I must tell you that, according to the after-action reports I received from the nine dates I arranged for you, your dating technique leaves something to be desired,” she said.

“There you go, blaming the client again. If I’ve got a technique problem, you should help me fix it.”

“Ethan adjusted his black-framed glasses, turned away from the desk, and crossed the office. He took a stance at the window overlooking the quiet residential street.

She liked watching him move, Ravenna thought. He reminded her of a specter-cat, all prowling grace and elegant strength. He had the eyes to match. They were a dark amber gold and infused with the cold heat of controlled power—the eyes of an apex predator. The amber stone in his gold signet ring was the same color.

Eyes like Ethan’s probably made some people nervous, she thought. Maybe that was the reason he chose to wear glasses. Or maybe he thought they went with the rest of his persona.
