Unfortunately, once Georgia’s former mother-in-law ambushes her at the library and threatens Georgia with legal action, the afternoon of fun is soured.

When Georgia’s litigious in-law is later found dead and the friendly baker is implicated, Kathleen is eager to help prove her innocence. Luckily, Kathleen and her intrepid magical cats, Hercules and Owen, have solved their fair share of mysteries. As a result, she knows that in life as well as crime solving, it is all relative, but with hard work, she can make sure the right criminal is booked.

Review:

Whisker and Lies by Sofie Kelly is the 14th book in her wonderful Magical Cats Mystery series.  Our heroine in this series is Kathleen Paulson, the librarian of Mayville Heights, as well as her adorable two cats, Hercules and Owen, who have some strange magical abilities like walking through a door, or just disappearing.  It’s fun to see Hercules and Owen find ways to give Kathleen little hints to help solve crimes.

Kathleen’s friend, Georgia, is a baker, and helps with the Halloween party.  Georgia went on the run, when her husband died, and his parents wanted to take full control of her young daughter, Emmy. Years later, they find her and threaten to take her daughter away. When the mother-in-law is found dead off a cliff, Georgia becomes the suspect. Kathleen is determined to find the real killer and prove Georgia’s innocence.

There are so many wonderful secondary characters, and Kathleen will talk to the local people in trying to find clues. I loved Hercules and Owen, who were so much fun.  I also loved Kathleen and Marcus (her detective boyfriend) together, as they made a great couple.

Whisker and Lies is a lighthearted, fun and comforting mystery, that was so very well written by Sofie Kelly.  Again, Hercules and Owen were delightful, as they always managed to get Kathleen’s attention ‘pawing’ out the clues. The story was fast paced, and kept me glued to my kindle.  If you want a fast cute fun mystery, I wholly suggest you read this series.

REVIEW: TWISTED TYRANT is the first instalment in Kristen Luciani’s contemporary adult, VENGEFUL VILLAINS erotic, dark Mafia romance series. This is assassin Luka Malikov, and twenty-one year old musician Natasha Resnov’s storyline.

WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Luka and Natasha) TWISTED TYRANT follows several paths including the tempestuous relationship between assassin Luka Malikov, and twenty-one year old musician Natasha Resnov. Natasha Resnov is the victim of a violent kidnapping wherein she finds herself the prisoner of the Malikov family. Dima Malikov, second in command, is forcibly taking Natasha as his bride but uses his brother Luka as the man to take charge but all does not go according to plan when Luka begins to fall for our story line heroine, and Natasha falls for Luka in return. Minutes before Luka and Dima’s sister Valentina’s wedding to fellow crime lord Dmitri Stepanov, gunfire erupts, killing several important people in the Malikov family. With Valentina missing and on the run, Luka Malikov circles the proverbial wagons, in an effort to protect the woman with whom he is falling in love. On the hunt for the truth, Luka, and his brothers Nikolai and Taras must come to terms with what has happened including the possible involvement of one of their own as well as our story line heroine. What ensues is the building relationship between Luka and Natasha, and the fall-out as Natasha becomes a pawn in an impending war between several crime families.

The relationship between Natasha and Luka is a forced proximity, forced marriage, kidnapping affair wherein Natasha quickly falls for our story line hero. Luka struggles with his attraction to the woman his brother is claiming as his own but Luka quickly discovers that all is not as it appears to be. There are other pieces and people at play, and the people involved go much higher in the organization than anyone could have imagined. Keeping Natasha safe means protecting our heroine from her family and his own but it may be Luka’s heart that needs protection from our story line heroine. The $ex scenes are aggressive and intense.

We are introduced to Luka’s brothers: Dima, Daniel, Nikolai and Taras; their sisters Tori and Valentina; their parents Viktor and Irina Malnikov; Natasha’s father Ivan Resnov ; Malikov family friend Boris Vetrov; Denis Stepanov and his son Dmitri; as well as several members of various factions of the criminal underworld including the Brotherhood 7, and the Red Ladro. Several characters cross over from the author’s various series. Not everyone survives in the face of betrayal and murder.

TWISTED TYRANT is a story of betrayal and vengeance, power and control, dysfunctional family dynamics, acceptance and love. The premise is dark, gritty and intense; the romance is impassioned and erotic; the characters are powerful, dynamic, and captivating.

The friendship that changed the destiny of a nation…

Their shared pledge of honor would endure for a lifetime to secure power in the Isles for Angus Og Macdonald and a crown for Robert Bruce. This is the story of their friendship, their times and the battle that secured their future.

Standing beside them would be two women from Ireland, Áine O’Cahan, the dark-haired beauty from Ulster, who captured the heart of the Lord of the Isles, and Elizabeth de Burgh, the fair Norman heiress who stood by her man, King Robert Bruce, though it would cost her dearly.

Enter the world of medieval Scotland and live the adventure!

••••••

REVIEW:Bound by Honor begins in 1286 with Angus Og Macdonald watching his father, Angus Mor Macdonald, Lord of the Isles, speaking with the captain of his galley. Angus Og had sailed with his father several times before and asked if he might again sail with him. His father agreed and Angus Og was even more intrigued with his father’s reply about the purpose of the trip: Scotland’s future. Being the second son, Angus Og’s older brother, Alexander (called Alex) would travel with them as well and be involved in the meetings their father had planned.

Once they arrived at their destination, Angus Og was introduced was introduced to Robert (referred to by his friends as Rob) Bruce, Robert the Noble’s grandson, along with others in attendance. Once the true meeting starts, Angus and Robert keep themselves busy talking and a game of chess. When the meetings are finally over, neither Angus nor Rob knew just how the pledge that bound their families together that fateful day would play out in their fight for Scotland’s freedom.

As Angus navigates the politics of Scotland and the King of England’s desire to possess it, he meets Aine O’Cahan, a widowed lady from Ireland. It doesn’t take either of them long to start having feelings for the other, although it takes one longer to admit. However, Angus is in high demand with his warriors and his fleet of ships and finds himself often in high demand as things heat up in Scotland. When duty calls, Angus answers knowing Aine will be there for him.

Bound by Honor is another wonderfully written book by Regan Walker. The characters are written extremely well. Angus’ loyalty knows no bounds and his sense of honor will endear him to all who read his story. Aine was the perfect match for him. Her loyalty and faith are what keeps Angus going battle after battle. Rob has his own love interest, Elizabeth de Burgh, but it is Aine who inspires him when he is at his lowest point in his quest for Scotland’s freedom. Angus and Rob’s friendship and support of each other is palpable. The respect they hold for each other is a thing of legend. The secondary characters are all well written as well. I did find myself lost a time or two trying to keep all of the characters straight, but it didn’t detract from the story. Once again, her effortless entwining of actual historical facts and characters with her stories is amazing. The worldbuilding is amazing and leaves you feeling the spray of the ocean or hearing the call of Aine’s birds. This story packs more history and details than any of Walker’s previous books, which does make it a longer tale. If you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll never go wrong with one of her books. Not only do you enjoy the story, but I always say I feel a tad bit smarter after I’ve read one of her books. Well done, Regan Walker! Very well done!

Description:

Paige and her joyful Aunt Glo have learned that the home they inherited comes with a magical library. They put together a book club group of loveable kooks to explore the magic. They’ve recovered from their first book journey, and they all agree on their next book which takes place on a cruise ship bound for Hawaii. Problem is, they were so excited about the cruising idea that they didn’t read the entire blurb on the back of the book. (“It was entirely too long,” explains Zell.) Once on the ship, they meet a charming and likeable man who blends seamlessly into their motley group. Too bad they don’t know why he’s so scarce during the day but shows up to join them every evening for dinner, drinks, and a show. When a dead body shows up on board, their new friend is labeled a suspect. Can they help him out by finding the real murderer? Or is he the real murderer? The book club will need to solve the case to get off the ship, out of the book, and back to their home.

Review:

Vampires and Villains by Elizabeth Pantley is the 2nd book in her fun Magical Mystery Book Club series. Refresher: Paige and her Aunt Glo, inherited the grandmother’s country inn, which comes with a magical library. Upon arriving at the Inn, they meet the resident cat, Frank, who talks (love Frank). With Frank’s help, they discover a secret library in the locked basement, which is enchanted.  They learn that they need to continue the existing magical book club, and bring in 6 more members.

In Vampires and Villains, Paige, Glo, and the eclectic and quirky members, pick a new book, which is a cruise to Hawaii; since they are short one member (from the previous book), a new member, “Million” joins.  This is a misfit group with each very different (talking cat, teenager, 80-year-old original member, etc) but they have become friends.

After boarding the ship, they meet intriguing new characters, including vampires.  Vincent, a vampire, who they immediately like, joins them often at dinner, and becomes their friend.  When a dead body is discovered, Vincent is considered a possible suspect, but the group is determined to find the real murderer, and help save Vincent.

The story was fun, with all of the members in the middle of this mystery, as they find a dead body at the casino; the ships security are mostly Vamps, and they take over. The team spends lots of time enjoying their cruise, and excursions, as well as trying to find new clues. As the mystery moves on to being solved, and the killer apprehended, the story winds down toward their return home.

Vampires and Villains was another enjoyable story, that was very well written by Elizabeth Pantley; which was totally different and unusual.  There were a number of surprises throughout, which was so much fun and a blast to read.  I loved the talking cat, Frank. Vampires and Villains was a wonderful lighthearted mystery and I look forward to the next book.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 1,2022

Giovanni Russo has forged a very particular life. Working in the world of rare books, he’s independent, self-sufficient, and alone. Withdrawn but combative, he engages in personal relations only to do business and, on occasion, have sex. His aloofness draws people in. Good for business, he says to himself. Good for sex. Of course, someone so enigmatic is asking for trouble.

Following his father’s sudden death, he inherits the family home, a modest place with no redeeming features other than the roomfuls of memorabilia left by his grandfather. Seeing the house as a chance to further consolidate his very private life, Van moves in. But there’s a catch. The will stipulates that neither the house nor anything in it can be sold, displaced, or otherwise moved for twenty-five years. There’s a notarized list.

One evening while moving his books out of the building where he works to his new home there’s a power failure and, from the darkness, Maurice appears. Claiming to be the janitor, he offers to help Van navigate his way. While slinking through the dark together their encounter develops into something so intense that Van finds himself obsessed. Used to living his sexuality as a series of hit-and-runs, he’s destabilized. Meeting Maurice, however, is only the first in a series of events that will disrupt his ordered existence.

He’s burglarized at both home and work, but nothing’s missing. Given Maurice’s nebulous past, Van suspects him but reconsiders when Maurice saves him from an apparent kidnapping. As he becomes increasingly attached to this mysterious man, Van’s defenses crumble and troubling events from his own past resurface. As Maurice asks him — “Why are you alone all the time? Why doesn’t somebody as amazing as you have a life?”

But Van has no time for therapy. Somebody wants something he has and they’re willing to do anything to get it. And he doesn’t even know what it is. Suddenly, he’s very popular. A woman claims to be his dead father’s fiancé. A colleague takes an interest in his movements. Another is intrigued by his family history. A neighbor is always in his face. And then there’s the thugs, sometimes masked, sometimes not, but always violent.

With Maurice by his side, Van searches not only for the answer but for the question. What does he have that everyone wants? His search leads him to a very unusual book, a hidden letter, an unresolved childhood trauma, and a fabled story of lost treasure that may be more than fiction.’

•••••

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 17, 2022.

Vocalist Audrey Reine has enjoyed local stardom at a famous music club in New Orleans for nearly two decades. When her lover, the club owner, replaces her with an ingénue, Audrey must negotiate an unexpected new life while trying to rescue her tentative musical career. The Repertoire is a jazz novella for a new era.

••••••

REVIEW: THE REPERTOIRE by Kristin Fouquet is a stand alone, contemporary, adult, love story focusing on New Orleans’ vocalist Audrey Reine aka Cleo, and night club owner Monsieur Emile.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Audrey and Emile) THE REPERTOIRE follows the love story and fall out of Audrey Reine and Monsieur Emile. For eighteen years, singer Audrey Reine was Monsieur Emile’s protege and lover but Audrey never expected to be replaced by a much younger version of herself. Alone and destitute Audrey contacted a former friend who gave our heroine a much needed push towards her own independence. An afternoon cocktail at a local New Orleans’ dive bar found Audrey looking forward, not back, where her climb to the top, would begin anew but our heroine never expected to come face to face with her past, a past that became all too clear when the proverbial rose coloured glasses are removed and the truth is revealed.

THE REPERTOIRE is a fast paced, novella length story of love, loss, obsession and betrayal set in the smoky jazz halls of New Orleans. Audrey Reine is a character, a caricature of the past, someone’s memories of what was and what will never be again. The premise is entertaining and intriguing; the romance is an homage to music, the era of Blues and Jazz; the characters are desperate, captivating and lost.
