REVIEW: HUNTED is the first instalment in VM Nelson’s contemporary, young adult DHAMPYR paranormal series focusing on eighteen year Dhampyr Anastasia ‘Tasi’ Vasile.

Told from first person perspective (Tasi) HUNTED follows eighteen year old Tasi and her thirteen year old sister Emily Vasile, as they navigate a world in which vampires are hunting the duo for their blood. Tasi and Emily are hybrid-part human, part vampire- known as Dhampyrs. Dhampyrs are stronger, faster and more powerful than most vampires something that threatens the vampire population. On the run in the wake of their parents’ murder, Tasi and Emily go to New York in search of a woman called Sonya, a woman whose secrets run dangerous and deep but Tasi and Emily will find themselves in the company of vampires, vampires who will become both friend and foe, leaving the sisters with no one to trust. As Tasi trains with the resident vampires to fight the enemy coming for their blood, she finds herself falling in love with a young man she is unable to trust. Emily will undergo the change, a change very few Dhampyrs ever survive; the sisters are about to face an uncertain future when betrayal comes at the cost of friendships and trust.

We are introduced to several vampires: Ethan, Austin, Cas, Lizzie, and their mentor/master Sonya, as well as the resident librarian/researcher Jelena.

HUNTED is a slow building story of betrayal and vengeance, power and control, family and friendships, secrets and lies. Like all young adult story lines, there is the requisite love triangle, the mean girl and jealousy, the secrets, and the questionable adult care…but HUNTED is also a very familiar story line akin to The Shadowhunters Series, with a little side serving of Vampire Academy, and The House of Night series. The similar overtones are many and recognizable. The premise is entertaining and interesting; the characters are familiar but energetic and young (even though many are decades old 😉 ). HUNTED ends on a bit of a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

REVIEW: CREED is the first instalment in Kathleen Kelly’s contemporary, adult ROYAL B*STARDS MC: Jacksonville, FL, erotic, MC, romance series-a part of the multi-authored RBMC series. This is President of the RBMC: Jacksonville chapter Creed, and Australian Vivian Lewis aka ‘Devil’s story line CREED can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary.

WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise ,there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from three first person perspectives (Creed, Devil, Camilla) CREED follows in the wake of a luggage mix up at the airport. Vivian has arrived in Florida for a six week vacation, a vacation predicated upon the break up of her relationship to a man who was having an affair with her best friend Jade but Vivian mistakenly picks up the wrong luggage, luggage that contains several blocks of heroin belonging to the Diablo Cartel, wherein Vivian will find herself a prisoner of the Royal B*stards MC. Enter MC president Creed, and the man with whom Vivian will fall in love. What ensues is the building relationship between Creed and Devil, and the potential fall-out as the Diablo Cartel demands retribution including the death of our story line heroine.

The relationship between Creed and Vivian is predicated upon an order by the Diablo Cartel. Camilla Sanchez, head of the Jacksonville cartel demands Vivian pay for her mistake, payment in death for knowing too much. Creed is ordered by Camilla to take care of the problem, a problem with whom Creed is about to fall in love. Keeping Vivian safe at the RBMC compound means staying up close and personal with our story line heroine but Creed never expected to fall in love with a woman as feisty as the ‘Tasmanian Devil’. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense.

We are introduced to Creed’s RBMC brothers: VP Reaper, SAA Winchester, Road Captain Highway, Tail Gunner Scout, Justice, Lucy and Missy; Officer Peter Schulz, as well as several members of the Mexican Cartel including Camilla Sanchez, her brother Gabriel, and their father Mateo, and Hector. The requisite evil has many faces. Reaper and Lucy’s story line is next.

CREED is a story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, murder, drugs and human trafficking, respect, acceptance and love. The premise is dark but intriguing; the romance is steamy and provocative; the characters are numerous and energetic.

The Many Sides of Morality in Siege by Robert DeSimone Jr.

Probably the most important part of writing any story for me is having likeable characters you can get attached to. To know their histories, wants, fears, etc. One important theme that goes into most of my stories is morality. As something of a goody-two-shoes since I can remember, I love exploring the idea of morality in my characters. And it is the main theme I try to (and hopefully) convey in the science fiction/mystery novella Siege.

What’s interesting about morality is that it is completely subjective based on the individual and/or the culture. Some say that there are universal truths regarding morality including not killing or stealing, however, if you consulted a Viking raider from the 9th century, he may disagree based on the norms of his culture. Regardless, when I wrote the characters of Siege, I installed some of my own ideas on right and wrong.

The four aspects of morality I explored was separated into four characters: Rain, the serial killer, Sofia, and Binder. Rain, as the de facto protagonist, is a character who has a strict black-and-white sense of right and wrong and generally follows the universal truths of morality. After finding the alien infant Crocadelia, he spends a great deal of time making sure she is safe and fed despite some of his teammates voting to have her killed. In this instance, his teammates argued that because she was the same species as their enemy and because she may one day, far in the future, be a threat, she should be killed, but Rain chooses to advocate for her life because she has done nothing wrong and is an innocent regardless of her species. To him the decision is easy: she’s innocent so she must be protected. Nothing else matters.

Rain’s biggest moral dilemma, perhaps, is the perceived temptation of the beautiful electrical engineer Sofia. Because Rain has a girlfriend named Annabelle back home, the question is: will Rain betray Annabelle in favor of Sofia or will he stay loyal? While I present this dilemma to the reader as if it is a possibility, Rain never actually considers betraying Annabelle. He simply admits to himself that he’s attracted to Sofia and that’s as far as he’ll ever take it. Because he has a cookie-cutter sense of right and wrong, he sees everything in black and white and would never betray someone he made a promise to. And he would never delve into the world of grays to satisfy his lust because that’s not in his moral programming.

Sofia, on the other hand, represents the gray area of morality. Partway through the story, it is revealed that Sofia is afflicted with a disease that will kill her by her mid-fifties and there is no cure in sight. Because her life will be cut almost in half, in her I explored morality mixed with mortality. She has a clock that is constantly ticking in the back of her mind, which is further exacerbated by the threat of being killed at any point during the siege, which leads her to make decisions she may not normally make if she were completely healthy. While she is empathetic, caring, and very protective (especially towards Crocadelia), she is more than willing to steal Rain away from Annabelle because she feels she may not have the time a healthy person would have to find a partner she truly loves.

The serial killer lurking within the walls of The Krag represents amorality. After the serial killer’s childhood and upbringing is explored, it is revealed he suffered trauma, lacked a mother figure, had a non-existent social life, and murdered his first person at a young age. Due to this, he grew up without morality being a factor in his life. Morality, in a practical sense, serves as a buffer to keep people from engaging in horrible

Immorality was explored, mainly in the character of Binder, but also in a few other minor characters as well. Binder is presented as a selfish person with little sympathy towards anyone but himself. This is shown in his treatment of Osman, one of his subordinates. He also has no empathy towards the animals he paralyzed during his time as a research assistant. He remarked that he preferred paralyzing the test subjects from their necks rather than their backs because it was more convenient for him. It didn’t matter to him that he would cause extra suffering to the animal who would no longer have use to any of its limbs.

I enjoyed being able to explore these themes in Siege. When writing the immoral and amoral characters in Siege, I tried to present them as cautionary tales to those who have no regard for others because I can’t imagine one can have a fulfilling life without empathy towards others and no moral code whatsoever. Consequences usually follow bad deeds.

And while these are my opinions on morality, others may find that people who do the right thing simply use morality as  the excuse for being a coward. Another may not think animal experimentation is an immoral act, rather a practical one to obtain data. What importance do you think morality plays in a story or life for that matter?

When The Echo Calls by Steve N. Lee – a Review

When The Echo Calls by Steve N. Lee – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play

Description:
Sometimes a dog isn’t just a dog — it’s hope.
Left for dead in the gutter, Rio struggles to his feet and lurches into the shadows for a place to hide. Life has always been brutal, thanks to a monster of an owner, but at least he’d had food, a bed, a place to call home. Now…?

Ben’s life ended when he lost his family. Drink no longer dulls the pain; therapy is a joke; friends have moved on. He’d had everything, yet now…?

But when the broken man meets the broken dog, they discover something neither had ever dreamed could exist… a reason to go on.

In a story as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking, When the Echo Calls explores how hope can be found in the most unexpected of places if only we have the courage to look for it.

Review:

Where the Echo Calls by Steve N Lee is another one of his standalone novels that centers on a dog.  Having read the previous books by Lee, I looked forward to reading this one.  I really enjoyed this book, though I did have mixed feelings, which I will detail later in this review.

We meet Rio at the start, when he is kicked out of a car; badly injured, he struggles to get up and hide in the shadows. Rio’s life has always been rough, being a dog fighter, and with a mean owner.  As Rio tries to heal a bit, he is desperate to find food, and keeps an eye out for his missing owner (who never comes); he doesn’t understand why people are mean, and looks at other dogs, who seem happy.  After a short time on the outside, animal control will capture Rio, and bring him to a hospital, with the Vet fixing his bad injuries.  I really liked the hospital assistant (he called her Wierdo), who was so wonderful taking care of Rio, and desperately trying to find a home, knowing the people tend to shy away from a dog that did fighting.   I will say close to the first half of the book, it was very emotional and depressing to see what Rio had to go through.

It was difficult to read when Rio was adopted, by not really good people.  The story changes when Rio meets Ben, who lost his family a long time ago. Both Ben and Rio were broken, and perfect to help each other. I loved how Ben did everything make Rio learn how to be a dog, and I got a kick out of Rio seeing other dogs in the park.  To say too much more would be spoilers, as the last half of the book was very well done as well as emotional; so much happens at the last quarter of the book, that you need to read.

Where the Echo Calls was a heartbreaking, as well as heartwarming story.  I loved Rio, and Ben, and some added characters later on.  My mixed feelings were the first half of the book, which had me putting the book down for a bit, since it was depressing; and I do love dogs. Where The Echo Calls was well written by Steve N Lee.

A meeting in secret threatens Anissa’s relationship with her fiancé Cole, and Cole ensures Anissa never again places her life in danger. Once again, not a fan of a certain four-letter word.

WITHOUT PAUSE OF GUILT is a story of deception, secrets, lies and obsession. The premise is intriguing; the romance is erotic and intense.

EMBER IN THE HEART by Samantha Young

EMBER IN THE HEART twenty-five year old, single father and real estate investor Foster Darwin, and thirty-six year old massage therapist/business owner Ember Bonet. EMBER IN THE HEART was originally released in the author’s LOVE STORY: A Novella Collection.

Foster Darwin met Ember Bonet at his best friend and partner’s engagement party, an engagement to Ember’s sister Jade but the meeting between Ember and Foster didn’t go according to plan, and Ember would soon discover that her new neighbor was none other than Foster Darwin. Foster Darwin is a snob, and constantly looked down his nose at our story line heroine but when he needed help with daughter, Ember was quick to jump in and help. Falling for his daughter’s temporary ‘nanny’ was out of the question but fall he did, if only for a short period of time.

EMBER IN THE HEART is an age-gap romance wherein Foster Darwin is unable to let go of his snobbish upbringing, and in doing so, hurt the woman with whom he would fall in love. The premise is emotional and heart breaking; the romance is seductive; the characters are feisty and energetic.
