REVIEW:SILVER LINING is the first instalment in Aleatha Romig’s contemporary adult BLURRED LINES erotic, romance series. This is forty-three year old, billionaire business woman Lena Montgomery, and thirty-one year old tech innovator CJ ‘Chandler’ Thompson’s story line.

NOTE: For followers of Aleatha Romig, SILVER LINING and the BLURRED LINES series is set in the same world as the author’s SIN series.

Told from dual first person perspectives (CJ and Lena) SILVER LINING follows in the wake of the sale of Architech to Montgomery Holdings. CJ and his brother Colton sold their business to Montgomery Holdings, and to celebrate CJ headed to Cancun where he would meet, and spend a glorious week, with a stranger, a woman who refuses to give more than the present. Upon his return, CJ would come face to face with the new owner of Architech, the woman with whom he was falling in love. Enter Lena Montgomery. All is not well in Lena’s life; Lena has a stalker, someone who is determined to make our heroine’s life miserable, someone who is desperate enough to pull CJ in the direct line of fire. What ensues is the building relationship between CJ and Lena, and the potential fall-out as Lena struggles with the power struggled between herself and CJ; and Lena’s stalker ups their attempts to destroy our story line heroine.

Lena battled between head and heart-CJ wanted to retain his position at Architech, a position that Lena claims would be a conflict of interested if our couple were to continue with their vacation affair. CJ is willing to step back or step-down but when the stalker gets up close and personal, CJ offers his protection to the woman that had stolen his heart.

The relationship between CJ and Lena begins as an island affair. One week together-no talk about lives back home, talk that would have revealed the reality of their situation, and their connection that runs deeper than sexual attraction. The $ex scenes are erotic and passionate without the use of over the top sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to CJ’s brother Colton: Lena’s partner and advisor Jeremy Wilde, as well as her personal security Kelsey and Adam.

SILVER LINING is a story of betrayal and trust, vengeance and grief, acceptance and love. The premise is intriguing and captivating; the romance is seductive and provocative; the characters are energetic, charismatic and determined. My only complaint, the conflict resolution was too quick and too easy.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 13, 2022.

They call me a soldier of fortune, a hired gun, a man with no morals only looking to get paid—a mercenary.
That’s true… mostly.
From where I stand, I don’t see it as a bad thing.
Getting paid to do the dirty work, to take the jobs saner people refuse is my bread and butter.
I love the danger, the thrill, the warmth that attempts to spark something in my cold, black heart.
Why shouldn’t I get paid for that?
Does it really matter if I’m indifferent about who I step on to succeed? The job always gets done, and I never look back.
The same went for Lauren Vos, an undercover FBI agent working in some of the most dangerous trafficking circles known to man.
Our paths crossed on a job years ago, and somehow fate has thrown us together once again.
Only this time around she isn’t interested in letting me forget.
The problem for her is that I’m not the same man she thought she left for dead.

REVIEW: LESSONS LEARNED is the first instalment in Marie James’ contemporary , adult MISSION MERCENARIES dark, erotic, romance series. This is mercenary for hire Angel Guerra, and rogue, undercover FBI Agent Lauren ‘Lola’ Vos’s story line. The MISSION MERCENARIES series is a spin off from the author’s CERBERUS MC series. Lauren and Angel were first introduced in THUMPER (Cerberus MC 17).

WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise there WILL be triggers for more sensitive readers.

NOTE: If you have not read THUMPER (Cerberus MC 17) there may be spoilers in my review.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Lauren and Angel) using present day and memories from the past, LESSONS LEARNED follows the unconventional relationship between mercenary for hire Angel Guerra, and rogue, undercover FBI Agent Lauren ‘Lola’ Vos. Months earlier Lauren Vos’s undercover operation within an El Salvador $ex trafficking ring went all to h*ll, including the take down of our story line hero but Lauren had no idea Angel was working as a mercenary for hire, leaving the man struggling for his life. Fast forward to present day wherein, Lauren is now living with the Cerberus MC but the MC has informed Lauren it is time to move on. With no place to go, Lauren ‘reconnects’ with Angel Guerra, the man that is about to slay the demons that continue to destroy her life.

The relationship between Lauren and Angel is unorthodox, dark and atypical. With the Cerberus MC no longer willing to house our story line heroine, Lauren finds herself at a crossroads between standing still or moving forward. Angel’s latest mission brings a face to face confrontation with the Cerberus MC, a confrontation that sets into motion Lauren and Angel’s descent into H*ll. Both Lauren and Angel’s pasts are shrouded in abuse, torture, murder and loss but our heroine struggles to overcome what happened and why. Lauren’s needs are individualistic- only Angel is able to give Lauren what she needs and wants. Borderline Personality Disorder / Impulsive Personality Disorder are but two possibilities for our heroine’s behavior. The $ex scenes are aggressive, dark and abusive.

The secondary and supporting characters include some of the members of the Cerberus MC, and mercenary Liam Jones.

LESSONS LEARNED is a story of desperation and obsession, abuse and madness, acceptance and understanding. The premise is dark, gritty, raw and often difficult to read; the characters are broken and damaged.

Let’s see…where to begin…

I’m inching up on the BIG 4-0. The gray hairs are doubling what seems like daily, and the wrinkles and laugh lines are more pronounced than ever.

I have an amazing husband (Married just over 15 years.)

We have two boys we’re doing our best to raise as respectful gentleman.

I have a master’s degree in criminal justice which I used to work as a juvenile probation office until deciding to write full-time in June of 2019. So that means there’s usually always some criminal/law element to my novels.

If I’m not writing; I’m reading.

My favorite genres recently are bully/reverse harem and enemies to lovers. Maybe I’m reliving my traumatic teen years through the girls who actually end up with the boys. (Not that I would change my history since it’s gotten me exactly where I need to be!)

I love coffee. I miss carbs. Music is LIFE. I try not to be too serious.

REVIEW: “I…I don’t have a home.”

“I don’t have one either, But baby, I think I just realized that home isn’t a place. It’s a person. And my home’s with you.”

Excuse me while I go sob into a dark corner. Helen Hardt and Vanessa Vale have taken their talents to the next level with their newest series. Scarred is a tale of light and dark, family and fear, betrayal and hope and loss and love. The first in the new series, Scarred offers a beautiful journey with amazing characters.

All Austin wants to do is help his sickly mother and save his flight business. He does nothing but work and tries his best, but nothing ever seems to give enough for him to move forward. When he finds out that the father that never wanted him left him an inheritance, he sees a faint hope that life is looking up. Too bad to gain the billions that the old man left, he has to go live in the middle of nowhere Montana on his father’s ranch. Best of all that also includes meeting and then living with two brothers as well. With his mother getting worse and no end in sight, Austin has no choice but to take the chance.

Little did he know what was waiting for him.

Carly used to be a normal college student, she came and went to classes, went to parties with her friends, that was until she was abducted from a small town diner. Three years later, she’s home, but not unscathed, she has scars. One that you can see, and ones you can’t. Determined to find some sense of normalcy, she takes a job at Bridger Ranch in the stables where there aren’t many people and she can help the animals. When she meets Austin all her plans fly out the window. Sparks and feelings she thought were long dead rise to the surface, but can she let her past go long enough to let Austin in.

Austin and Carly are like a balm to each other, neither believing that the past they each carry would allow them happiness. Nonetheless, on the ranch they find more than just each other, they find family.

Oh how I loved this read. It was so soulful, Vale and Hardt sure know how to tug on the heartstrings. I loved Carly and Austin together, but also how their brothers bond and come to love each other. That is family, no matter where they come from. I can’t wait to see what brother is coming next.

#1 New York Times, #1 USA Today, and #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author Helen Hardt’s passion for the written word began with the books her mother read to her at bedtime. She wrote her first story at age six and hasn’t stopped since. In addition to being an award-winning author of romantic fiction, she’s a mother, an attorney, a black belt in Taekwondo, a grammar geek, an appreciator of fine red wine, and a lover of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. She writes from her home in Colorado, where she lives with her family. Helen loves to hear from readers.

About Vanessa Vale

Who doesn’t love the romance of the old West? USA Today Bestselling author Vanessa Vale takes the sensual appeal of rugged cowboys a step further with her bestselling books set in the Montana Territory. They are much more than just sexy historical westerns. They’re deliciously naughty reads that sometimes push the boundaries of fantasy. It’s pure escapism with quite a few very hot, very alpha cowboys. When she’s not writing, Vanessa savors the insanity of raising two boys, is figuring out how many meals she can make with a pressure cooker, and teaches a pretty mean karate class. She considers herself to be remarkably normal, exceedingly introverted and fairly vanilla, which does not explain her steamy stories and her fascination with cowboys, preferably more than one at a time. She lives in the Wild Wild West where there’s an endless source of ‘research’ material.

REVIEW:: IRON EMBER is the first instalment in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult SKYE DRUIDS paranormal/fantasy romance series-a spin off from the author’s REAPER series which in turn is a spin off from the author’s many interconnected series and stories. This is Druids Elodie MacLean and Druid Scott Ryan’s story line. IRON EMBER should not be read as a stand alone- I recommend reading DARK ALPHA’S COMMAND (Reaper 15) for back story and cohesion as many of the events of the current story line are as of a direct result of the events in Dark Alpha’s Command. Several characters from the other series including Reaper Balladyn and Druid Rhona (Dark Alpha’s Command) and some of the original Dark Warriors / Dark Sword characters appear as secondary and supporting characters.

SOME BACKGROUND: Months earlier, betrayal and vengeance forced a take-over of power on the Isle of Skye but someone or something is killing the Druids, not only on the Isle of Skye, but around the world including Edinburgh Scotland. With the focus on the death of the Druids on the Isle of Skye, Balladyn and Rhona begin an investigation that reveals a danger targeting the Druids and the MacLean family, in particular.

Told from third person perspective IRON EMBER follows Elodie MacLean’s return to the Isle of Skye. Fifteen years earlier Elodie’s life spiralled out of control, and our heroine found herself acting out and misbehaving in a manner that labelled her persona non grata on the Isle of Skye. Having lived in Edinburgh for a number of years, her return to the Isle of Skye to face the demons from her past finds Elodie coming face to face with her future in the guise of Druid Scott Ryan but Scott has a secret, a secret that may push Elodie out of his life, a life that may no longer be under his control. Estranged from her family, Elodie struggles in the wake the loss of her magic, and the memory of what may or may not have happened. As the attacks against Elodie, and the Druids on the Isle of Skye increase, the past resurfaces revealing the truth about what happened and why. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Scott and Elodie, and the potential fall-out as Scott’s lies of omission threaten our heroine, and a predator demanding revenge focuses their energy of the Isle of Skye.

The relationship between Scott and Elodie begins when Scott, and his best friend Filip offer to help with repairs on Elodie MacLean’s family cottage. Remaining empty for close to fifteen years, the cottage is in disarray, having fallen behind in upkeep and love. As Scott and Elodie’s attraction to one another turns into something more, Elodie finds herself facing secrets, lies and betrayal at the hands of the man with whom she is falling in love, and the family with whom she is no longer close. The $ex scenes are limited but intimate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters many of whom cross over from the author’s numerous interconnected series including warriors, Druids, Reapers and Dragons. We are introduced to Scott’s friend Filip, their ‘mentor and leader’ Georgiana, as well as Elodie’s siblings Edie and Elias.

IRON EMBER is a detailed and complex story that continues to build upon the events of Dark Alpha’s Command. Balladyn’s mate Rhona is the new leader of the Druids on the Isle of Skye, having won by default in the face of deception and betrayal by the former people in charge. The premise is intriguing and entertaining; the romance is passionate and captivating; the characters are energetic and charismatic.

Chapter OneShe was back.
It was the last place she wanted to be but the only place she had to run to.
Elodie threw open the curtains. Dust danced in the air, the sunlight catching it. She stared out the dirty window to the sea beyond. Skye. The home she’d proclaimed she would never leave because she loved it so fiercely.
It was also the place she had sworn to never return to.
And yet, here she was.
“Bloody hell,” she murmured as she turned her back to the window and looked over what remained of the furniture from her parents’ cottage.
Her gaze slid to the hearth where echoes of children’s laughter clung to the stones. Her mother had made the best hot cocoa. After playing for hours outside in the winter, Elodie, her elder sister, Edie, and her brother, Elias, would sit before the fire with steaming cups of cocoa and her grandmother’s strawberry scones.
Elodie squeezed her eyes shut. She wanted to hold onto the lighthearted memories, but the other ones were always on their heels—the ones that had altered all their lives, throwing them into chaos.
She blew out a breath and focused on the clutter and mess before her. The dust was so thick that she knew she would end up with respiratory problems for days if she didn’t take precautions. And it wasn’t as if she could use magic to prevent it.
Returning to Skye was like walking through one of Dante’s nine circles of Hell. Elodie didn’t know how she would survive being back on the island. If only she’d had somewhere else to go. Anywhere else. If she still believed, she would think Skye had interfered and brought her back.
“If that’s the case, then my magic wouldn’t be gone, now would it?”
It was hard not to be bitter and angry about her life. She owned her decisions, but she had been on a different path. Then, everything had imploded with the force of a nuclear explosion.
When she looked around after, everyone just went about their lives as if her family hadn’t been rocked to its core. As if she and her siblings hadn’t had their blinders ripped off with such force that it’d changed all three of them in one heartbeat—their innocence gone in the blink of an eye.
Corann had tried to help, but the old Druid hadn’t been able to reach any of them. And Elias had left. Elodie still hadn’t forgiven him for leaving her and Edie to navigate the churning waters of their society. Elodie might have been the youngest, but she was the one who’d ended up taking care of Edie. Her sister had the kind, gentle spirit of their mother. Elodie had lashed out and turned to drinking and drugs, but Edie had gone into herself.
Elodie walked through the main area of the cottage and past the kitchen to the hallway. Pictures of their family still hung on the walls. Snapshots of a happy life that had hidden the rot beneath. She stopped at one where Edie smiled brightly with a cake and lit candles before her. Maybe Elodie hadn’t been the one to take care of Edie. They had leaned on each other, clinging to one another and struggling to keep their heads above water. It was only because of her sister that Elodie hadn’t sunk too deeply into the hard life. She’d known she had to be there for Edie. And in the end, they’d kept each other afloat.
Until Elodie hadn’t been able to stay another minute on Skye.
Fifteen years. It seemed like a lifetime, but it was much too soon to be back. Nothing would keep her on Skye longer than necessary this time. Not her sister. Nothing. Skye had annihilated her family. It had destroyed her. How Edie could remain on the isle was a mystery. And Elias? All Elodie could hope for was that her brother had found some semblance of happiness. They all deserved it.
Elodie forced herself to walk to each room, but she couldn’t manage to go inside her parents’. She stood before the closed door as screams and shouts from that horrible day filled her head. Elodie backed away and turned on her heel. How in the world would she stay in the cottage? Sleep just feet from where it’d all happened.
“I can’t,” she stated with a shake of her head.
Elodie grabbed her purse and the single bag that held her measly belongings and started for the door. Then she remembered why she was on Skye.
“Fuck!” she yelled and fought the sudden urge to release the scream of frustration that welled up.
She wasn’t a crier, but everyone had their breaking point. She forced the tears back and dropped her bags. The only way to get on with her life was to take her sister’s offer. All Elodie had to do was clean up the cottage so they could sell it. It was a good deal. Elodie had the place to herself instead of sleeping on the sofa at Edie’s crowded house with her sister’s kids and husband. And all without having to pay any sort of rent.
Since Elodie was homeless and jobless and had less than two hundred pounds to her name, it really was a blessing. At least she’d thought that until she arrived on Skye. Even driving around the island had made her chest constrict. Her anxiety rose with every mile. Then she’d arrived at the cottage. It had taken Elodie half an hour to work up the courage to actually walk inside.
“Maybe I deserve this torture,” she said aloud. “I didn’t exactly live a good life.”
This was supposed to be her chance to start over. To travel the path she’d been on before she got derailed.
“Fine. Let’s do this.”
She opened the door, then went to all the windows and opened them despite the frigid temperatures and the threat of rain. The dust had to go somewhere, and the sooner she got it out of the house, the better. Elodie started in the bedroom she had once shared with her sister. She carefully folded the bed linens from each twin bed and dumped them outside. Thankfully, Edie had given her fresh sheets, pillows, and blankets.
Next, she found an old towel and used some cleaner to wipe down the walls and window, sweeping the cobwebs from the corners before vacuuming the carpet. Only then did she bring in her bag and purse.
Elodie wiped her face with her arm and made her way to the main area. Someone had placed sheets over the furniture. She slowly and carefully folded them, but there was so much dust that some still escaped. The pile joined the bed linens outside. On her way back inside, she smiled as she saw the dust wafting out the windows. Hopefully, most of it would land outside instead of back in the house.
The smallish living area didn’t take long to wipe down. The windows would take more than one cleaning. She didn’t want to touch the outside yet. That was a whole other matter entirely. Her first priority was to get the inside clean enough that she could locate any repairs that needed to be addressed. Only after she did that would she tackle the outside.
The old cottage was too quiet. Elodie pulled out her phone and put on her favorite playlist as she went back to cleaning. She kept moving, which helped to keep her warm. There was a brief shower, but she didn’t bother closing the windows. The house needed to be aired out to get rid of the musty smell. She suddenly froze, the hairs on the back of her neck lifting. Slowly, she straightened from scrubbing the bathroom counter and looked at the doorway. No one was there. At least no one she could see.
A chill raced down her spine. With the sponge still in her gloved hands, she walked into the hallway. She glanced at her parents’ room, then looked the other way. Elodie slowly made her way to the kitchen. Her gaze landed on a tall, gorgeous man with black and silver hair, standing next to a pretty female with red hair.
The man was a Fae. It seemed there was no escaping them anywhere, but they hadn’t been allowed on Skye in decades. At least as far as she knew. What was he doing back?
“Hi,” the woman said.
Elodie swung her gaze to the female. She looked close to Elodie’s age, and something about her seemed familiar.
“You don’t remember me, do you?” the woman asked with a smile.
Elodie shook her head. It was unnerving that people already knew she was on the isle. Worse that they remembered her when she had done everything to forget Skye and everyone on it. “I don’t.”
“You’ve been gone awhile. I’m Rhona.”
In an instant, Elodie remembered Rhona and her cousin, Sorcha. They used to come over occasionally. She had always liked both girls. Elodie glanced at the floor, slightly embarrassed for the harsh welcome she had given them. “Of course.”
Rhona looked at the man beside her, love shining in her eyes. “This is Balladyn.”
“A Fae,” Elodie said before she could stop herself.
Balladyn inclined his head of long hair. His eyes were silver, but she saw a ring of red around them. “Reaper, actually.” His voice had an Irish lilt.
Reaper. Elodie wasn’t sure what that meant.
“We wanted to welcome you back and see if you needed anything,” Rhona said.
Elodie shifted her feet nervously. Did they know she’d lost her magic? “That wasn’t necessary.”
“You’re one of us,” Rhona said with a soft look. “We look after our own.”
Resentment threatened to choke Elodie, and she had to remind herself that she shouldn’t direct her anger at Rhona. She hadn’t been any older than Elodie back then. Corann was a different matter. “Corann sent you?”
A frown moved over Rhona’s face so quickly that Elodie almost missed it. “We lost Corann. I’ve taken his place.”
“Oh.” Damn. She should’ve had Edie bring her up to date on things. Then again, Elodie hadn’t wanted to talk to any Druids, so she had made sure not to take an interest in anything. “Honestly, I won’t be here long. As soon as I get the place fixed up and sold, I’m leaving.”
Rhona’s green eyes narrowed slightly. “That’s a pity. We could use you.”
No one ever had use for her. Elodie glanced at Balladyn to see that the Reaper’s gaze hadn’t moved from her. It was unnerving to have him watch her in such a way, and yet she didn’t feel threatened. “It’s for the best.”
“Why don’t you come for tea later this week? We can catch up,” Rhona said.
Elodie’s plan to keep to herself was rapidly disintegrating. She liked Rhona—or at least the person she had once been. It wasn’t in Elodie’s nature to be outright rude, but Rhona would likely ask questions that Elodie wasn’t prepared to answer. And she was tired of lying. “I’m no–”
“Please don’t decline. Think it over.” Rhona smiled. “Please.”
Well, bugger it. “I’ll consider it.”
Rhona’s smile was huge. “Great. And if you need any help, we can get this place together quickly.”
The offer was so tempting that Elodie nearly took it. If they did, she could leave Skye that much quicker. However, if she agreed to Rhona’s offer, it would inevitably lead to those pesky questions she was intent on dodging. “Thanks, but I’ve already made good headway today.”
“At the very least, let me fix the leaking roof,” Balladyn said.
Her gaze snapped to him. The roof was leaking? She glanced around but didn’t hear any dripping. Then a drop landed on top of her head. This might be a bigger project than she’d thought. She faced him and forced her tight lips into a smile as her stomach churned with anxiety. “I would appreciate that.”
“It’s done,” he said with a bow of his head.
“Thank you.”
Rhona flashed another smile. “It’s good to have you back. I hope you’ll consider the tea.”
Elodie held her smile until the two of them suddenly disappeared. She blinked and frowned. Balladyn must have teleported them out. At least the leak was fixed. She looked up at the ceiling and spotted the water damage.
“I’m going to be here forever,” she grumbled.

After flunking out of the Auditor training program and being dismissed as “not Department material,” Grimsby tried to resign himself to life as a mediocre witch. But he can’t help hoping he’ll somehow, someway, get another chance to prove his skill. That opportunity comes with a price when his former mentor, aka the most dangerous witch alive, is murdered down the street from where he works, and Grimsby is the Auditors’ number one suspect.

Proving his innocence will require more than a little legwork, and after forming a strange alliance with the retired legend known as the Huntsman and a mysterious being from Elsewhere, Grimsby is abruptly thrown into a life of adventure, whether he wants it or not. Now all he has to do is find the real killer, avoid the Auditors on his trail, and most importantly, stay alive.

Review:

Dead Man’s Hand by James J. Butcher is his debut novel, which is the first book in his new series, The Unorthodox Chronicles.  The Unorthodox Chronicles is a magic world, with human Usuals and paranormal Unorthodox; the Department of Unorthodox Affairs and Auditors are government magical elites, with witches who use spells to control their power.  There are two main characters who lead in this story.

Grimshaw Griswald Grimsby failed in his attempt to be an Auditor, and with his mentor now dead, Grimsby has become the prime suspect.  He works at a restaurant to make some money, using his witch abilities, until he is approached by The Huntsman (a retired assassin for the Unorthodox), who at first plans to kill him; but then Mayflower (the huntsman) realizes that Grimsby is innocent.  Despite their obvious differences, they partner to find the real culprit.

Where Mayflower, is considered a legend, who has been around forever, and is an expert in all Unorthodox and Auditor affairs; even though he is now retired, he needs to find out who killed his former mentor.  It is Grimsby who Mayflower needs to help him, with his witch abilities.  Grimsby was in many ways a coward, bumbling up many things, while Mayflower would usually save him.  I found that both main characters were not totally likeable, with Mayflower being hard and sarcastic throughout, and Grimsby totally off the wall for the most part.  Closer to the end, they managed to work well together.

Dead Man’s Hand is a unique urban fantasy adventure, at times suspenseful; with witches that enforce the Unorthodox.  Grimsby and Mayflower are constantly thrown into chaos and danger; with Grimsby a reluctant witch, Mayflower a grumpy veteran, and mystery that has many twists and turns.   Will they survive?  Dead Man’s Hand was well written by James J. Butcher, though I did think there was too many details and redundancy.  If you like Urban Fantasy, I do suggest you give this book a try.

The High Notes by Danielle Steel – a Review

The High Notes by Danielle Steel – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Iris Cooper has been singing ever since she can remember, hitting the high notes like no one else. When she is twelve, her father convinces the owner of a bar in Lake City, Texas, to let her perform, and she stuns the audience. In the ensuing years, never staying anywhere for long, father and daughter move from one dusty town to the next, her passion for music growing every time she takes the mike in another roadhouse.

But it is not an easy life for Iris with her father in charge and using her income to pay for gambling, women, and booze. When she starts to tour at age eighteen, she takes on a real manager. Yet he exploits her too, and the singers and musicians she tours with are really the only family she has. It is they who give Iris the courage to finally fly free, leave the tour, and follow her dreams.

After years of enduring the hardships of the road, exploitation, and abuse, to do what she loves, her big chance comes as her talent soars. But at the top at last, Iris still has to fight every step of the way. In The High Notes, Danielle Steel delivers an inspiring story about finding the strength to stand up for yourself and your dreams, no matter what it takes.

Review:

The High Notes by Danielle Steel is another one of her wonderful standalone novels.  We meet Iris Cooper, who at 12 years old, lived with her drifter father, as they moved around a lot.  Iris loved to sing, and had an amazing voice for someone her age.  Her father, who also drank, took her to a bar to sing, and over the next number of years, he made money on her singing, until she reached 18 years old, when she decided to go on her own, as her father always spends her money for himself.

Iris tours for over nine years, as her manager also exploits her, but she makes friends with other musicians on her tours. Her friends give her the courage to pack up and leave the tour and follow her dreams.  She goes into hiding in a small town, and meets Boy, a singer on a band, who becomes her friend (no romance), and together they make great music.  Iris convinces Boy to go with her to New York, to meet with a recommended manager. She auditions with Clay Maddox, who is a very successful and likeable manager.  He loves Iris voice, and when she mentions to Clay about Boy, who she feels also has a very nice voice.   Clay hires both Iris and Boy, with Iris career soaring, with a tour and album.  Boy ends up being the opening act, and he too with eventually become famous.   Iris’s ex manager tries to force her to return, but Clay will stop him, proving the ex-manager was a bad man.

Over a period of time, Iris and Clay (there is an age gap), will slowly begin to fall in love, and her life becomes filled with happiness.  Iris also wants to bring some old friends who stood by her into life.  The High Notes is a wonderful sweet story, filled with hope, tragedy, friendship, love, bad people, with a fantastic heroine.  I loved The High Notes, which was so very well written by Danielle Steel.  This is a story not to be missed.

Vasilisa Sidkorolyavolkva is a Lycan of royal blood. She knows what is expected of her, but all she wants is to be out from under her family’s watchful eyes. There is a fire inside her that is building. A restlessness coupled with a sense of growing dread. Every day she feels the weight of the legacy passed down through generations. The prophecy that says a man will come to claim her as his mate, and that she will guard his soul. She knows nothing about him except that he is hers. But nothing seems real until the night she meets him in the flesh….

Afanasiv Belan is a Carpathian, an ancient one. In all the centuries of his existence, no one has ever affected him like Vasilisa. He can see into her mind and feel what is in her heart. They are so alike, warriors bound by honor and plagued by secrets. They both know they must reveal the darkest parts of their souls if they hope to survive and protect the ones they love.

But if they claim each other as lifemates, it will change them down to the bone. They will become something more—something feared by both of their kinds.

Sandy’s Review:

DARK WHISPER is the thirty-sixth instalment (or thirty-second depending upon where you look) in Christine Feehan’s contemporary, adult DARK /CARPATHIANS erotic, paranormal, romance series. This is ancient Carpathian warrior Afansiv Belan, and Royal Lycan Vasilisa Sidkorolyavolkva’s story line. DARK WHISPER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

SOME BACKGROUND: All Carpathian males must find their lifemates before they turn vampire or greet the dawn. Without a lifemate, the males no longer see in color, feel pain or experience emotions. A lifemate is the light to their dark. She is the keeper of his heart and the keeper of his soul. As the unmated Carpathian male ages, the darkness begins to envelope his soul, eventually turning the male vampire or forcing him to greet the dawn.

Told in five parts, leaning strongly on the belief of the Tarot, using third person perspectives DARK WHISPER follows another ancient Carpathian warrior as he finds his lifemate. Afansiv ‘Siv’ Belan is much more than an ancient Carpathian, and it is his heritage that makes him a target of Lilith and the Underworld but meeting his fated lifemate brings Siv into a world of color, sounds and emotions, a world in which he is about to come face to face with his tormented path. Vasilisa Sidkorolyavolkva is a Lycan of Royal blood, and with it comes the powers bestowed by DNA and prestige but through the years, Vasilisa has had the opportunity to share blood with a female Carpathian, and in doing so, makes Vasilisa a Sange rau-a hybrid of mixed blood, no longer pureblood, a Lycan often discriminated against by their own kind. Vasilisa has always known she carries the other half of a Carpathian soul, and with it, readily accepts our hero as her Carpathian lifemate but all is not well in the world of the Lycan, when her brothers are trapped in the Underworld, becoming something or someone Vasilisa no longer recognizes. Along with several ancients, as well as Dimitri and Skyler, Razvan and Ivory, and the few remaining Dragonseekers in the area, Afansiv must undertake a spiritual and psychic journey into the depths of H*ll, in an effort to save the Royal Lycan bloodlines, and stop the master vampires from killing them all.

DARK WHISPER continues to focus on a new enemy, Lilith and the demons of H*ll, an enemy controlled by a former foe who is alive yet not, whose existence was once thought dead and gone. The four portals to H*ll continue to be guarded by four ancient Carpathian females, females who have yet to find their lifemates but powerful woman whose job it is to protect and defend.

The relationship between Siv and Vasi is one of fated mates. Vasilisa is a warrior unto herself, trained to fight and to kill the vampire, with most of the same abilities as the Carpathian people. Afansiv Belan is an ancient but has accepted, to some degree, the modern women’s need for independence but like all lifemates, his duty is to protect and defend the woman he loves. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including many of the Dragonseeker lineage and their mates-Dimitri and Skyler, Razvan and Ivory; Ancients Petru Cioban, Nicu Dalca, and Benedek Kovac; as well as the introduction of Vasilisa’s brothers: twins Garald and Grigor, and their ruler Andros Sidkorolyavolkva, their Aunt Olga, and several members of various Lycan families including Andros’ girlfriend Lada, the rogue Sacred Circle, and Gaia, a young Carpathian woman kidnapped and forced into H*ll, a woman who refuses to leave behind the ‘demon’ that saved her life.

DARK WHISPER reveals a new concept in the world of the Carpathian-ancients with tattered souls, thickened with dark scars through years of battling the vampires, and the fear of turning demon, not only vampire, but a demon meant to serve in the Underworld. The entertaining premise is detailed and complex- awash in numerous action-packed fight scenes with both vampires and demons, Carpathians and Lycans, magic and power. The romance is limited, not the main focus on the story line, almost an afterthought to the overall premise-I didn’t feel the attraction, it was a relationship based on fate. The characters are powerful and charismatic.

Love Love Love the cover !

Barb’s Review:
Dark Whisper
by Christine Feehan is the 32nd book in her wonderful Dark/Carpathian series. We meet at the start, Vasilisa (Vasi) Sidkorolyavolkva, our heroine, a Russian Royal Lycan, who is an important member of this family of Lycan’s, with three brothers; as they take care of their people, both human and wolf. Vasilisa is a very powerful warrior, having been trained to use her supernatural skills, by her mother as a child; she is also a demon hunter.  Vasi has been sensing her soulmate, who is in deep danger, fighting vampires; she begins to have mental contact with him, trying to help him.

Afanasiv (Siv) Belan, is an ancient Carpathian, who spend many years at the monastery, with other ancients; protecting the innocent as they fight demons and vampires. Siv has almost given up in finding his lifemate, until he feels the connection to his fated mate; as the world changes when he begins to see colors again.

I loved meeting Vasi and Siv, as they were so good together.  Vasi accepted her bond to Siv, and he was absolutely awesome respecting her wonderful powers. Siv will constantly keep her close and safe throughout the danger they must face in the coming war of the Russian terrorists, as well as the demons from the underworld.  Vasi’s brother, Andros is the oldest brother who is the leader of their family and their people.  She has two other brothers (twins), Garald and Grigor, who are always there for both Andros and Vasi. They are under assault from evil enemies who want to take over her brothers and their village. Siv’s cohort of other Ancients comes to help as well as Lycans and Dragonseekers.

Dark Whisper begins the story of the remaining 4 ancients to find their Lifemates, with Siv being the first one. We can expect the remaining three men (Benedek, Petru, and Nicu ), to have stories upcoming, as they played a major part in this story.  I loved seeing so many of our previous favorites, who were there to help when the danger escalates.  It was so great to see Dimitri, Skyler, Ivory, Razvan, Fen, Tatijana, Branislava, just to name a few.  Loved seeing them all. We learn that the underworld and mages, desperately want a Dragonseeker, which Siv is also one.

Dark Whisper was an exciting, tense and fun story, with a fantastic couple in Vasi and Siv, as well as all the wonderful secondary characters. The action was non-stop, with battles throughout against the demons, as well as the Russian group trying to destroy the royal family.   Dark Whisper was very well written by Christine Feehan.  If you are a Dark/Carpathian fan, you need to read this book.

He framed her face with both hands and looked into her vivid blue eyes. She had beautiful eyes. Eyes a man could drown in. He brushed kisses gently over both eyes, the tip of her elegant nose and then the corners of her mouth. “I’ll add my safeguards to yours,” he murmured against her soft lips. “The weaves will be in my mind for you to follow.”
He ran the pad of his thumb over the curve of her bottom lip, etching the feel and texture of it into his soul for all time. Then he took her mouth. Gentle. Coaxing. Tender. Promising. Tasting her as she opened for him. The rush started. The heat. The flames. The fire. He wasn’t certain if he was the match or she was. They came together in a fiery explosion that was never-ending. He didn’t want it to end. It was the most feeling he’d ever experienced. Overwhelming. Good. Paradise. His brain turned off, so there was no real ability to think. He had Vasilisa and the way she made every nerve ending in his body come alive. Hot blood rushed through his veins and thundered in his ears, roared in his groin, pooling to make urgent demands.
He didn’t know who pulled back first, but suddenly he felt very much bereft, his mouth just scant inches from hers. “I know I was supposed to go somewhere and do something very important, but that’s gone up in flames.”
Her laughter was low, her blue eyes soft. Her fingers traced his bottom lip gently. “I believe you were about to go off on a rescue mission to retrieve my brothers from the depths of hell. Something easy like that.”
He nodded and captured her hands. “Be safe, Vasilisa. Don’t take any chances. Anyone coming to the cabin—anyone at all—related to you, looking like one of your friends, could easily be someone compromised.”
She nodded her head. “I’m well aware. I won’t allow anyone in, no matter the circumstances.”
“They can get inventive. Wolves devouring someone right outside your door.”
“They could try that, but I control the wolves. If they didn’t obey me, I would know immediately that it was a setup. Go before the sun is up.”
“Seal the fault after me. Leave one tiny space my spirit will come through that only you know of. Do not share with me.”
He saw the uneasiness on her face. “You cannot. We need to take precautions. A part of you will be with me, so you’ll know if you will need to escape quickly. This is a dangerous place. I cannot emphasize that enough. I have demons in me; you do not.”
She nodded. “Go then. Hurry back to me.”
He turned away from her, one of the most difficult things he’d ever had to do. He knew what it was like in the underworld. It hadn’t been easy escaping. He’d been there with his physical body. This time he was only taking his spirit. That gave him both advantages and disadvantages. He lay down on the cot, stretching out to full length and, without allowing further thought on the subject, shed his physical body.
Vasilisa touched his mind. Afanasiv felt her entrance, that sweet feminine brush along the walls of his brain. So light. Not tentative. She was never that. She knew what she wanted, and she acted with confidence most of the time. She generally filled every empty, lonely space with her energy, making him feel whole and complete. Right now, she found a very small space, barely there, and fit her spirit inside it.

She is my captive.
My revenge.

I took her in a blind rage.
Retribution for a vicious attack on my family.
She deserves to be punished for her crime.
And I’m the one who will make her suffer and beg for mercy.

My job is to defend my family’s empire against this gorgeous enemy.
But her sinful body and sassy mouth captivate me,
Feeding the wickedness in my soul.

My desire for revenge became something much darker and more twisted.
I want to break her.
To own her.
To spank her bright red so she never forgets the sting of my palm against her flesh.

Most of all, I need to hear her scream my name over and over
When I show her what it means to be mine…forever.

REVIEW: DIRTY DEVIL is the second instalment in Kristen Luciani’s contemporary, adult VENGEFUL VILLAINS, dark, erotic, Bratva, romance series. This is twenty-six year old Nikolai ‘Nik’ Malikov, and twenty-year old Kenzie Wheeler’s story line. DIRTY DEVIL can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Nik and Kenzie) DIRTY DEVIL follows in the aftermath of the bombing of the restaurant La Gioia, a restaurant co-owned by our story line hero. Kenzie Wheeler wants revenge against the people she believes killed her father, and with the help of her siblings and her uncle Hank, Kenzie sets a plan into motion to destroy the Malikov family one business operation at a time but all does not go according to plan when, in the aftermath of the attack, Kenzie and her siblings find themselves prisoners of the Malikov family, as the family struggles in the face of destruction and death. As Luka Malikov battles between life and death, Nikolai takes aim at our story line heroine. Demanding her complete submission, Nikolai must come to terms with the feisty and belligerent female that is claiming his heart, a heart he thought was dead and cold. What ensues is the acrimonious but building relationship between Nikolai and Kenzie, and the potential fall-out as betrayal comes from outside and within, a betrayal that focuses on Nikolai Malikov, and the woman with whom he is falling in love.

The relationship between Kenzie and Nikolai begins as prisoner and warden. Nikolai Malikov wants information but the torture of a woman is not something Nikolai wants or craves. Keeping Kenzie his prisoner means up close and personal with the woman that will steal his heart but Kenzie is not an easy prisoner, pushing all of Nikolai’s buttons at every opportunity. Kenzie will eventually discover she make a horrible mistake, used as a tool to manipulate the Malilkov family. The $ex scenes are intimate, aggressive and provocative, and not without some issues of questionable consent.

The secondary and supporting characters included Kenzie’s siblings Noah and Charley, and their uncle Hank Wheeler; auto mechanic Torres, Alek Severinov, Boris Vetrov; We are re-introduced to Nik’s siblings: Luka and Natasha (Twisted Tyrant 1), Danil, Taras, and Tori. The requisite evil has some familiar faces.

DIRTY DEVIL is a story of betrayal and vengeance, power and control, grief and loss, forgiveness and love. The premise is dark, gritty and impassioned -the Malikov family must still contend with the secret society known as The Brotherhood 7 who are taking aim at the surviving siblings; the romance is seductive and impassioned; the characters are broken, desperate and trying to heal.
