Description:
At seventeen, Lenora Hope
Hung her sister with a rope

Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Stabbed her father with a knife
Took her mother’s happy life

It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night. In her seventies and confined to a wheelchair, Lenora was rendered mute by a series of strokes and can only communicate with Kit by tapping out sentences on an old typewriter. One night, Lenora uses it to make a tantalizing offer—I want to tell you everything.

“It wasn’t me,” Lenora said
But she’s the only one not dead

As Kit helps Lenora write about the events leading to the Hope family massacre, it becomes clear there’s more to the tale than people know. But when new details about her predecessor’s departure come to light, Kit starts to suspect Lenora might not be telling the complete truth—and that the seemingly harmless woman in her care could be far more dangerous than she first thought.

Review:

The Only One Left by Riley Sager is another one of his gothic thriller novels. I have read a number of books by Sager, and in each book, he continues to surprise and shock us with so many twists we never expect.

The story starts off in 1929, when the Hope family was murdered. Lenora was the only one who survived, telling the police that she did not kill her family.  She became the lead suspect, but the police could not find evidence to convict her, becoming a legend, which she never left her estate.  Fifty plus years later, Lenora is paralyzed and constantly needs care, and her latest caregiver left.

We meet Kit McDeere, our heroine, who lost her job as a home-health aide, after her mother died under unusual circumstances, which she pleaded innocence. She is given another chance to be a caregiver, but she is hesitant, since she would need to care for Lenora Hope, who everyone thinks killed her family all those years ago; but she accepts the job, as she needs money.

Kit is surprised to find the infamous Lenora confined to a wheelchair, unable to speak or move, except for her left arm; having suffered multiple strokes. In a short time, while caring for Lenora, Kit is surprised that she wants to tell what happened all those years ago; especially claiming her innocence.  Lenora communicates with Kit using a typewriter with her left hand, a slow process over time.

Kit begins to suspect that Lenora is not revealing the truth, especially when the remains of the previous caregiver is discovered; Kit is scared and wants to leave, but she needs the money.  She tries to learn more from other staff members, who have been there for a long time.  The cliffside mansion is falling apart, increasing the danger of living there. To say too much more would be spoilers, as the last third of the book is filled with twists and surprises.

What follows is a wild last third of the book, with so many secrets, twists, turns and deception.  The Only One Left was so very well written by Riley Sager, with shocking surprises, as we race to the climax.  Sager outdid himself with this book, as it was a thriller all the way.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 20, 2023

She never expected her hero to be the bad boy from her past…

They hate each other .

Or at least, Smith Sanders always believed Madelyn Lake hated him. But when the city plunges into darkness and he finds himself trapped in an elevator with the prim and ever-so-reserved Madelyn, he realizes that hate and desire can be twined dangerously close together. The simmering tension that has existed between them since they were sixteen years old explodes in a sensual frenzy that sweeps past their control.

It won’t ever happen again.

Power returns. So does sanity. They go their separate ways except…he can’t get her out of his head. Madelyn is haunting him, and Smith already has more than enough ghosts dodging his steps. But he goes back to her, helpless against a desire that won’t end, just in time to save her from a vicious attack.

He never knew her at all.

Madelyn’s whole life has been a lie. A carefully orchestrated cover to protect her from the monster in her past. Only now that monster has found her once more. Protection from the past comes in a most unlikely form—the ever so sarcastic and far too sexy Smith. Former Special Ops, Smith is vicious, deadly, and, quite possibly, the answer to her prayers.

Needing him is dangerous. Falling for him? That’s so much worse.

Madelyn is ready to stop the killer who has taken so much from her, but she can’t do it alone. She needs Smith’s help—Smith and the Ice Breakers, a diverse group of hunters who excel at solving cold cases. Madelyn has spent years pretending to be someone else, and Smith is her key to finally ending her nightmare. But ending that nightmare means returning to her blood-soaked past, fighting an enemy who thrives in the dark, and putting all of her faith in Smith’s callused hands. Her faith, and her heart.

Because with every moment that passes, she finds herself starting to fall deeper and deeper for her unlikely hero…The bad boy from her youth is now the vicious protector who swears he will do anything to keep her safe.

A cold case is about to get brought back to red-hot life as Madelyn and Smith team up to stop a killer. TRAPPED IN ICE is a steamy romance with twists, danger, and a hero who enjoys laughing in the face of danger. Smith is sarcastic, fierce, and totally about to fall for the good girl from his past. Years ago, Madelyn was always out of his reach—even as she starred in his fantasies—but this isn’t a fantasy any longer. She’s his now, and he will do whatever it takes to protect her. Buckle up and get ready for the ice to melt…

•••••••

REVIEW: TRAPPED IN ICE is the fifth instalment in Cynthia Eden’s contemporary, adult ICE BREAKER COLD CASE romantic suspense series focusing on the men and women who work for Ice Breakers, an online team of crime solvers whose goal is to solve cold cases. This is security specialist Smith Sanders, and art authenticator Madelyn Lake’s story line. TRAPPED IN ICE can be read as stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

NOTE: For fans of Cynthia Eden, there is a slight cross over with the author’s Wilde Ways series.

Told from third person perspective TRAPPED IN ICE follows the search for a suspected killer. Years earlier, at the age of thirteen Madelyn Lake aka Maggie was abducted by a stranger but upon her escape would discover she was not the only victim of a possible serial killer, a killer who was never found, and the murders never solved. Fast forward to present day, the demons from her past begin refocusing on our story line heroine, demons with a possible connection to the who, how and why. Enter security specialist Smith Sanders, a childhood acquaintance of Madelyn Lake, and the man with whom Madelyn will fall in love. What ensues is the protection of Madelyn; the rebuilding friendship and building relationship between Madelyn and Smith, and the potential fall-out as a killer sets their sights on our story line heroine.

Smith Sanders fell in love with Madelyn Lake at the age of sixteen but within days of introduction Smith would disappear never to be heard from again. Since her abduction Madelyn had been ‘warned’ not to draw attention to herself, and in doing so, kept her life separate from everyone else but as an adult Madelyn was always distrustful of people she didn’t know, but it may be the people closest that can cause the most harm.

The relationship between Madelyn and Smith is a second chance, of a sorts. Smith never had time to get to know our story line heroine, as his own life was spiralling out of control. Now a chance to protect the woman with whom he is falling in love give Smith the opportunity to claim the young woman who had stolen his heart. Madelyn Lake also suspected that one day her past would return but she never expected to get up close and personal with the young man who was hoping for a second chance. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting characters include Aiden and Tony (Touched by Ice), Memphis Camden (Falling for the Ice Queen 2) , as well as the introduction of several people connected to our heroine’s past.

TRAPPED IN ICE is a story of betrayal and vengeance, obsession and madness, murder and mayhem, mistrust and acceptance. The premise is intriguing, twisted and dramatic, ; the characters are animated, broken and desperate; the romance is seductive and energetic.

The Duke of Wilby is nearing death and has tasked his grandson and heir, Lucas Arden, Marquess of Roath, with marrying and producing a son before it is too late. He is instantly attracted to his sister’s new friend, until that young lady asks a simple question: “Remember me?” And suddenly he does remember her, as well as the reason why the daughter of the Earl of Stratton is the one woman he can never marry—even if his heart tells him she is the only woman he wants.

Telling Philippa the full truth is the hardest thing Lucas has ever faced, and the discovery of it will change them both before they discover the healing power of love.

Review:

Remember Me by Mary Balogh is the 2nd book in her Ravenswood series. I have been a big fan of Balogh and her wonderful Historical romances, especially the epic Westcott series. Remember Me focuses on Lady Philippa Ware, sister to Devlin (previous book hero), now the Earl of Stratton; and Lucas Arden, the Marquess of Roath and heir to the Duke of Wilby.

Philippa, being the eldest daughter, looked forward to her debut, but after her father’s scandal, as well as hearing a nasty insult from the handsome Marquess of Roath (Lucas), she decided she would not go to London.  A few years later, she finds the courage to attend the ball and meet the ton; and becomes an instant success, with many suitors enamored by her.  Philippa also develops a close friendship with Jenny, the granddaughter of the Duke of Wilby; determined to avoid the Marquess, as she has never forgotten his insult.  At dinner, with members of the Wilby and Dare family, she ends up sitting next to Lucas, and decides to whisper ‘Remember me’. Looking at Philippa, Lucas tries to remember her; but then realizes a terrible comment he made a few years ago to a friend, and did not know she overheard the insult. Lucas apologizes to Philippa, realizing those hurtful words he uttered then, was not the man he is today; however, she goes out of her way to not spend any time with him.  Lucas will visit Philippa at her home, to make amends, and he explains where that nasty comment came from; she learns the truths about the scandal.

Pippa and Luc found it hard to stay away from one another, especially with his grandfather pressuring him that Philippa was the right woman for him; with his grandfather helping him find a way to woo her.  Luc finds himself fully attracted to Pippa, and they end up attending many events, with both families and friends. Pippa finds herself becoming very close to Jenny, and the entire Wilby family; especially the autocratic duke and duchess; who are determined that she is the perfect wife for Lucas.

It was wonderful to see them find their way to a possible love; when the Duke falls sick, Philippa agrees to accept the marriage proposal to Lucas. I really loved them together, especially after Lucas explained what happened four years ago.

Remember Me was another great addition to this new series, so very well written by Mary Balogh.  I did love both Philippa and Lucas, rooting hard for them to find a way to be together.  I loved the both the Ware family members, especially Stephanie, Pippa, Ben, Nicolas and Owen, as well as the many members of the Wilby family. Remember Me was a wonderful and emotional story.  If you enjoy historical romances, you can never go wrong reading anything my Mary Balogh.

The Happiness Plan by Susan Mallery – a Review

The Happiness Plan by Susan Mallery – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Bookbub

Description:
Heather is happy . . . ish. She has a successful business, a cute but contemptuous cat, and best friends Daphne and Tori who know where she’s broken and love her anyway. So why does she feel crushed when her ex gets serious about someone new? No problem, she has a plan. More connections will hold her together while her world falls apart, so she finally reaches out to the stranger who might be her dad.

Daphne isn’t having an emotional affair, despite what her husband believes. He started the rift in their marriage when he said they weren’t ready for a baby. They used to be the closest couple she knew. Can they find their way back to one another before it’s too late?

When Tori forms an inconvenient crush on Daphne’s brother-in-law, she suppresses her feelings. Until her apartment floods, and she moves in with the dog-loving doctor. If things go wrong, she could lose her friends. . . but if they go right, she could lose her heart.

Review:

The Happiness Plan by Susan Mallery is a wonderful heartwarming story with a fantastic friendship between three best friends. The story revolves around three friends, who have known each other for many years.  Heather, Daphne and Tori; they are each different, but have a strong bond between them, always supporting each other.

Heather had a hard childhood, with an abusive mother who always gave her a hard time, leaving her with horrible memories that constantly affect her life; she is afraid to open her heart. Heather has a successful business, which makes her happy, and Tori, also works for her; it is Tori and Daphne who are always there for Heather, when she becomes scared or depressed.  Heather will discover the father she never knew, and slowly open up and accept his family, filled with love.

Daphne is a successful lawyer, being part of a partnership, and working 80 hours a week.  One day, her coworker sends her flowers, and her husband thinks she is having an affair; which Daphne vehemently denies. Their marriage begins to suffer, as she cannot convince him that there is no affair with her coworker, they were only friends.  Will she be able to save their marriage and prove he is wrong?

Tori is lives in the same development as Grant, Daphne’s brother-in-law, and they have become best friends.  Her love life is none existent, with terrible dates; she encourages Grant to date, which is also unsuccessful for him.  When their apartment building is damaged with a sprinkler malfunction, they find a large house to share, for a few months.  In a short time, they both realize their feelings for each other, but Tori worries that if they don’t stay, she will lose the friendship all of them share. Will she find a way for them to stay together?

The male characters were very good, Grant, Campbell and Brody, as they all had an amazing friendship between both girls and guys.   Heather’s biological dad and his family were also wonderful.  The Happiness Plan focuses on all three couples, their friendship, relationships, family and the love that have for each other.

The Happiness Plan was an amazing and heartwarming story, that was so very well written by Susan Mallery. I loved this story, with each of the ladies being wonderful, even with difficult situations, which they were always there for each other.   The Happiness Plan is definitely a must read.

Description:

When her new job takes her to a New England boarding school, she’s surprised to find her roommates are all men – including a very handsome one who plays by his own rules.

Sophie Doyle has her dream job as the head athletic trainer for her favorite baseball team (go Red Sox!), a handsome boyfriend, and easy access to the finest cannoli in Boston. When she loses all three and the World Series to boot, she’s forced to apply for the open trainer position at an arts-focused boarding school in New Hampshire. The only available room is a glorified closet in an apartment with three guys: Jonas Voss, the aloof and attractive orchestra teacher, and his two rambunctious roommates.

Sophie knows that training a bunch of privileged high school kids whose idea of a play is A Chorus Line instead of a walk-off homer is going to be a big change from the pro athletes she’s used to. She wasn’t expecting that these students would have big-time talent and even bigger-time problems. Sophie has troubles of her own—Jonas is a full-fledged grump who clearly doesn’t want her near him or the precious piano he never plays.

With sunny optimism, Sophie sets out to win over Jonas and help the kids she’s growing attached to. But when her relationship with Jonas moves to the major leagues and plans change at the end of the season, they have to choose whether they are playing for keeps.

Review:

Play For Me by Libby Hubscher is a sweet fun romantic standalone novel. We meet Sophie Doyle, our heroine, at the start, when she is fired from her job as head trainer for the Boston Red Sox, after she made the decision to not allow the team’s star pitcher to play due to an injury.  The Red Sox lost the World Series, and Sophie, despite her making the correct decision lost her job, as well as her boyfriend.  Sophie, with help from her friend, Astrid, accepts a job at a school in New Hampshire, to be their sports therapist/trainer.

When she arrives at the school, the only room opening is an apartment with three guys, Andy, Ravi and Jonas.  Sophie is given a room, which is a bit small, but she is satisfied; until Jonas, who is the orchestra teacher, is nasty and tells her not to touch the piano. Andy and Ravi were wonderful, especially since they are a gay couple; they do tell Sophie to ignore Jonas’s behavior.

Jonas, our hero, is totally grumpy with Sophie, but in a short time, she begins to open the walls he has built around him. Sophie learns about his damaged hand, that does not allow him to play the piano, with doctors diagnosing his disability, and his unwilling to discuss it.  Sophie is very knowledgeable about all kinds of injuries, and is determined to find a way to fix Jonas’s issue.  They begin to work together, with Jonas doing everything Sophie shows him, and soon their relationship fully changes, with Jonas opening up his heart, falling in love with Sophie.  The chemistry between them was hot, and I loved them together.  It was great to watch Sophie work hard in helping Jonas, as well as a young violinist, who was also an amazing pitcher, with a future in both fields.

Play For Me was a wonderful enemy to lovers’ story, with a wonderful couple, fun secondary characters. Sophie was a fantastic heroine, who was always sweet, friendly, competitive, determined, and good at what she does. The banter between Sophie and Jonas was great, especially once their feelings escalated. Play for Me was a fun romantic story, so very well written by Libby Hubscher.  I fully recommend the you read this book.

REVIEW: ERASE is the fourth instalment in the contemporary, adult SONS OF GOD erotic, MC romance series co-authored by Elizabeth Knox and London Kingsley. This is Leon ‘Dionysius’ Spencer, and artist Lacey ‘Rebellion’ Nixon’s story line. ERASE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Lacey and Dion) ERASE follows in the wake of rumors regarding The Burning Heretics MC, a rival MC gunning for control of the streets in Alabama, with the help of the South American cartels. Offering to go in undercover with the rival MC, Leon ‘Dion’ Spencer finds an easy mark with Lacey ‘Rebellion’ Nixon, the daughter of The Burning Heretics MC. From the outset Dion and Lacey’s attraction is immediate but Lacey is often the target of her father’s anger and fist, and finds herself facing down a dangerous foe as she struggles to move on with her life. Discovering Leon is not the man he claims to be, Lacey struggles to move forward but another violent attack forces Lacey to chose the lesser of two evils. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Lacey and Dion, and the potential fall-out as Lacey’s father, and The Burning Heretics MC refuse to let go.

The relationship between Lacey and Dion is one of immediate attraction although predicated upon secrets and lies. Dion needs to uncover any and all information about the Heretics plans with the Cartels, but Lacey’s safety is about to become his number one priority. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate.

Once again, we are reintroduced to Dion’s father Zeus and his wife Jolene; Dion’a sisters Amira, and Calli, and her significant other Connor; VP Hades; Hermes; Pan and Trix, Pan’s sister Gemma. The requisite evil has many faces.

ERASE is a story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, secrets and lies, family and acceptance. The fast paced premise is engaging and twisted; the characters are animated and dynamic; the romance is fated and seductive.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 20, 2022

Callista

My father left when I was a toddler without so much as a word. As the years went by I craved answers, but my mother wouldn’t give them to me. Now I’m done with depending on other people. I packed up everything and moved to the town I knew my father still lived in: Birmingham, Alabama. You see, my father’s the President of the Sons of Gods MC. I was going to get my answers, and I’d do whatever I needed to. I just never expected to fall in love with one of the men in his club while I sought closure.

Connor

My life was centered around the club. As a prospect I had to prove it to everyone, and then one day when I proved myself enough I’d get patched in. Until then, I did what I was told, backed up the club when needed and life went on as usual. Proving myself to the club would happen in a variety of ways, even helping a friend’s sister with some issues at her house. That’s where I met her: Callista. She was more beautiful than any woman I saw before, and her eyes showed me she felt true pain. It made me curious and I soon came to discover the heart underneath the shell. I thought we were near perfect for each other. It didn’t matter what happened, whether it was a threat to Callista or the club, we overcame it. Until I found out something that changed everything.

REVIEW: EROTIC is the first instalment in the contemporary, adult SONS OF GOD erotic, MC romance series co-authored by Elizabeth Knox and HJH Wolfe. This is MC mechanic Connor aka Eros, and twenty-nine year old for US Navy member turned bartended Callista Spencer’s story line.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Calli and Connor) EROTIC follows Callista Spencer as she searches for her father, a man she hasn’t seen since she was a child. Callista’s mother refuses to acknowledge the existence of her daughter’s father so our heroine hires an investigator to search for the man she no longer knows. Having spent eleven years in the US Navy, Callista retires, instead heading to places unknown in the hopes of meeting the man she wants to call father. A job as a bartender at ‘Shots’ brings Callista up close and personal with several members of the local MCs including Connor aka Eros, the man with whom Calli will fall in love but all does not go according to plan when our heroine is targeted by the president of a rival MC, a man who is about to claim Callista as his own. What ensues is the building relationship between Callista and Connor; the rebuilding relationship between father and daughter, and the potential fall-out as Callista becomes fodder in a war between rival MCs.

EROTIC is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, obsession and madness, family and love. The fast paced premise is dark, gritty and engaging but some of the more raw and heart breaking scenes are off page and only alluded to; the romance is seductive; the characters are determined and desperate.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 17, 2022

Trix

I’ve lived my life in the dark since the very day I was born, but that’s what happened when you’re abandoned in front of a fire station at two days old. I was put into the state system and eventually after no interest, I was transferred to an orphanage. It’s where my life became hell until I was old enough to age out of the system. Since then, I’ve made a life for myself. It wasn’t easy, but I did it. I persevered, went through some tough shit, and made it through. I assumed I wouldn’t have any more tough conflicts in my life, but the moment the Sons of Gods MC made it their mission to knowingly keep the truth from my best friend, I lost it. I told her the truth and while I know the club’s intentions were good, I couldn’t let them lie to her. Not when she’d already been through so much. Only, as I stood up for telling the truth to one of my friends, I was faced with a hard decision with another: keep my growing relationship a secret, or tell Gemma I was sleeping with her brother. I didn’t want to lose her, and I didn’t want to lose him.

Pan

I never intended on being with Trix, but she was a spitfire I couldn’t keep my hands off. She pushed me at every point and argued with me just as much. She was a woman who didn’t bend her will to appease others, and I respected that the most about her. We went from hating each other for a while to being each other’s resident bedmates. I couldn’t imagine another woman in my bed and I didn’t want to. At the same time we were creating something between the two of us, things with the club were blowing up. Our Prez was shot, the man responsible evading us at every turn, and our sales were down. We all knew who was responsible for it and we just had to find him. We’d find him one way or another, and when we did, the entire club would have vengeance for what he did. I don’t know who’s a bigger threat: Thorn, or Gemma.

REVIEW: ERODE is the second instalment in the contemporary, adult SONS OF GOD erotic, MC romance series co-authored by Elizabeth Knox and JH Wolfe. This is Pan and baker Trix’s story line. ERODE can be read as a stand alone but for back story and cohesion I recommend reading book one EROTIC as many of the events of the current timeline are as a direct result from the events of book one.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers. If you have not read book one, there may be spoilers in my review

Told from dual first person perspectives (Pan and Trix) ERODE follows in the aftermath of the attack on the Sons of God MC wherein MC president Zeus was injured, struggling to survive, and his daughter Calli was abducted and forced at the hands of the Vile Serpents MC. Three months of recovery finds Zeus’ return to power, seeking vengeance for everything that went down, a vengeance that doesn’t go as well as planned. Meanwhile, Pan and Trix continue to dance around one another, a dance that isn’t appreciated by Pan’s sister Gemma. As Trix and Pan’s relationship continues to build, Trix’ past comes back, hoping to pick up where they left off.

ERODE is a story of friendships, relationships and love; revenge and retribution, acceptance and family. The fast paced premise is dramatic, entertaining and captivating; the romance is edgy; the characters are dynamic and determined

Zeus

As the President for the Sons of Gods MC, I’ve lived a hard life. I’ve made many mistakes, some greater than others. There’s not a day goes by where I don’t think about those mistakes. We all thought the worst was behind us, but an unexpected death rocked our worlds. It made me rethink everything, and in the process I used alcohol to numb my pain. Amira recommended grief counseling to me, and I wasn’t keen on the idea. Over time—and constant nagging on my daughter’s side—I ultimately gave in. I never thought I’d meet a woman who’s been through as much hell as I have in grief counseling, but I did. She’s constantly on my mind, and I know I have no place pursuing her in the first place, but I can’t stay away.

Jolene

Six years ago, I lost my husband and seven-year-old daughter in a car crash. Their loss left me a shattered wreck—but over time, I put my life back together. I went back to school and eventually became a counselor, determined to help others the same way my counselors helped me. Now I’ve opened a private practice in a new city and am ready to truly start again. The last thing I need is to get mixed up with the leader of a motorcycle club—not to mention a potential client, too. But when Zeus walks into the grief group I run on a volunteer basis, everything about him overturns my preconceived notions about MCs. And no matter what I do, I can’t stop thinking about him. If he continues to pursue me, I don’t think I’ll be able to say no.

REVIEW: ERUPT is the third instalment in the contemporary, adult SONS OF GOD erotic, MC romance series co-authored by Elizabeth Knox and London Kingsley. This is licensed professional counsellor /widow Jolene Bell, and Sons of God MC president Chip ‘Zeus’ Spencer’s story line. ERUPT can be read as a stand alone but for back story and cohesion I recommend reading the series in order as there is an ongoing premise throughout.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Zeus and Jolene) ERUPT follows in the aftermath of a devastating loss for our story line hero. Zeus is struggling, and his daughters Calli and Amira have suggested grief counselling but Zeus is reluctant to reveal that is heart is broken, and his grief is real. Enter counsellor Jolene Bell, the professional leading the group sessions about grief and loss. From the outset Zeus and Jolene are attracted to one another but Zeus is hoping for something more, and takes his ‘grief’ in another direction. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Zeus and Jolene, and the potential fall-out as the past continues to pick at the old wounds for our story line hero.

Jolene Bell lost everything six years earlier to a drunk driver, and in the interim went back to school to get her degree in an effort to help those struggling with grief and loss but Jolene never expected to meet her future in the guise of a man named Zeus, a man with whom Jolene will fall in love. Zeus Spencer’s grief is exacerbated by the guilt he feels having left his wife years before but Zeus needed to protect his family, and the only way was to walk without looking back. Getting a second chance with Jolene means forgiving himself but the past refuses to let go, threatening Jolene in the process. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate.

ERUPT is a story of second chances, loss and grief, forgiveness and acceptance, vengeance and understanding. The fast paced premise is revealing and engaging; the romance is seductive; the characters are struggling but working to thrive.

He’s a violent gangster. My life’s at rock-bottom.

It’s the perfect time to make a baby.

My life is a total wreck, which is why I go home with a knee-shakingly gorgeous, insanely rich stranger named Finn Crowley.

I’m into his bossy-and-controlling-alpha-jerk vibe, at least for one night.

But things get worse a few weeks later when I realize I’m pregnant.

And Finn leaves his arranged-fiancee so he can marry me instead.

Which I definitely did NOT ask him to do.

I don’t even want to be married to this guy, but it’s either say the vows or remain broke and alone.

I’ll put up with his possessive and demanding attitude for the sake of the baby.

At least until I find a way to escape

REVIEW: MARRIAGE OF SIN is the first instalment in BB Hamel’s contemporary, adult CROWLEY FAMILY erotic, Irish Crime family, romance series. This is businessman Finn Crowley and Dara Connell’s story line.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Finn and Dara) MARRIAGE OF SIN follows in the wake of a one-night stand between our leading couple. In an effort to secure a controversial government vote, Finn Crowley is forced to marry a member of a powerful family but Finn wants nothing to do with a marriage of convenience, a marriage that would be in name only. A woman in distress finds Finn claiming to be her boyfriend, a claim that will push our couple together, if only for one night. Enter Dara Connell, a young woman who has found herself without a job, soon to be homeless, and eventually pregnant with Finn Crowley’s child. Seeing an opportunity towards another direction, Finn proposes marriage to our story line heroine, a marriage that is about to threaten the woman with whom he is falling in love. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Finn and Dara, and the potential fall-out as Finn must take control to protect his new wife and child, a control that results in a show of power between Finn, his father, and the man who arranged the marriage between Finn and Robin McLaren.

The relationship between Finn and Dara begins as a one-night stand in which Finn all but ‘rescues’ our heroine from her aggressive boss. Six weeks will pass wherein Dara will discover she is pregnant, and with the help of her best friend Kathryn, goes in search of our story line hero. Dara does not want to be forced into a marriage for the sake of the child but our heroine is homeless and jobless, with no other prospects in sight. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate.

We are introduced to Finn’s business partner and best friend Genna; his mother Molly, father, and his brothers Carson, Nolan, and Liam; Dara’s ex-fiance Lucas; her best friend Kathryn; Irish Mafia soldier Shane, and Finn’s intended and manipulative fiancée Robin McLaren, and her powerful father Clive.

MARRIAGE OF SIN is a story of power and control, influence and authority, betrayal and vengeance, threats and manipulation, family and relationships, acceptance and love. The premise is intriguing, twisted and edgy; the romance is emotional; the characters are desperate, determined and spirited.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 13, 2023

Having just completed a challenging case, private detective Terry Luvello was hoping for some rest. Instead, a 3:00 a.m. visit from a thirteen-year-old neighbor is a prelude to what will soon become the most perplexing case of his career. The girl’s father, the director of the Cleveland Federal Reserve, has just been accused of murder. Even worse, the police are in possession of evidence that seems to confirm the father’s guilt.

Reluctant though intrigued, Terry is soon thrust into the world of deepfake videos—fabricated recordings so real they are virtually impossible to disprove. Shortly after Terry begins his investigation, similar videos implicate four other individuals with ties to high finance.

With the help of his partner and girlfriend, police detective Hannah Page, Terry soon realizes that disproving the videos is only half the battle. In a case filled with misdirection, Terry and Hannah must determine the true motive behind his client’s frame while matching wits with an unknown adversary willing to kill anyone who stands in his way. As they learn more about their enemy’s true intentions, Terry and Hannah race against time to prevent a crime on a scale far greater than they could have ever imagined.

A transgender male with a uniquely wry sense of humor, Terry seeks to solve his case while continuing with the clinical transition he began months earlier. As the investigation reaches a climax, he must decide just what he is willing to sacrifice to save the woman he loves.

REVIEW:DEEPFAKE is the second instalment in Joe Rielinger’s contemporary, adult TERRY LUVELLO mystery, suspense series focusing on transgendered male, private detective Terry Luvello. DEEPFAKE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from first person perspective (Terry) following several paths, DEEPFAKE follows in the wake of a 3am visit from PD Terry Luvello’s thirteen year old neighbor who claims her father has been arrested for murder. Ray West, a single father, is the director of the Cleveland Federal Reserve and has been accused of the killing of a female friend. An anonymous witness has come forward with a video showing someone who looks like Ray at the scene of the crime, a video that may or may not be a deepfake recording. With the help of his girlfriend, police detective Hannah Page, and IT genius Tomas O’Malley, Terry will begin to unravel the clues that lead to a well-planned, and soon to be executed theft of millions of dollars but Ray West is not the only high profile figure to be targeted in similar videos, videos that may all lead back to a familiar foe. An arson investigation ends with the death of a suspect, an investigation that also leads back to an unlikely source. From the Boston Irish Mob to the FBI, everyone becomes suspect in a technological nightmare.

Meanwhile, and secondary to the main story line, Terry Luvello’s transition from female to male is about to enter the pharmaceutical phase of his evolution. At this stage in the series, we are not privy to the intimate details, only that strangers and friends are aware of Terry’s life changing transformation.

DEEPFAKE is a story of greed, power and murder, deception and betrayal. The premise is intriguing and entertaining; the characters are interesting and thought-provoking.
