ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 3, 2023

Olive Thornbury only had one crush in high school, and his name was Asher Gallo. She was smitten with him from the first time she had laid eyes on him. But instead of acting on how she felt, she kept her nose stuck in a book, finding safety in the words rather than emotions.

Asher had never thought of Olive as anything more than a friend. She was aloof, preferring to read books. instead of spending time with her friends. And when she moved away almost a decade ago, their friendship quickly disintegrated.

But when Olive returns to visit a local university, she never expected to run into a very grown up and even more handsome Asher. And what starts off as a rekindling of an old friendship turns into a fiery relationship.

Do the opposites have enough in common to go the distance? Or will their combustible chemistry cause the flames to turn everything into cinders?

•••••

REVIEW: The next Men of Inked: Heatwave installment is here with Cinder by the ever talented Chelle Bliss. This is a continuation of an extended series, but a majority of the books can be read as stand-alones.

The Gallo family are near and dear to me, they almost feel like family with how much time I have spent reading about them. With Cinder, we get Asher and Olive’s story. It’s a bit of a coming home story for me, Olive and Asher grew up together and she had all the feels for him. As life went on, they went their separate ways, but when they both return to their hometown and see each other again, who knows what will happen. Their story is a sweet, loving, meaningful story that readers are going to love.

For a Chelle Bliss book this was a little fast paced and didn’t leave enough room to develop the character fully, but nonetheless a really good addition to the Gallo series.

REVIEW:WARRIOR’S HOPE is the sixteenth full length instalment in Rebecca Zanetti’s contemporary, adult DARK PROTECTORS erotic, paranormal/fantasy series. This is Paxton Phoenix, Drake, and Hope Kayrs-Kyllwood’s story line. WARRIOR’S HOPE should not be read as a stand alone. I recommend reading the series in order, or at the very least, this particular arc of the series focusing on the group of Seven beginning with book eight VAMPIRE’S FAITH, as there is an on-going premise throughout. Hope, Phoenix and Drake’s story has been building throughout the series

SOME BACKGROUND: A thousand years earlier, a number of immortal warriors went through a ritual that, if they survived, hardened their bodies against attack, a ritual meant to create a group of Seven known as The Shield. The Shield was created to protect the world from an evil race of vampires known as the Kurjans, their sect group known as the Cysts, and ultimately a rogue warrior once considered a friend- Ulric-a male of immense power. To protect the human race, Ulric was captured, and along with two of the Seven, was encapsulated in one of three spheres for all eternity but the spheres are no longer capable of holding the ‘Seven’, and the warriors have returned to Earth. As the warriors search for the ‘Keys’ to perform the ritual, the ‘Lock’ must be protected in order to take down the evil that is hoping to take over the world.

Told from a number of third person perspectives including Hope, Paxton and Drake, following several intersecting paths WARRIOR’S HOPE focuses on the impending war between the Realm of the supernatural and the Kurjan empire. Someone is determined to take control of the Kurjan empire but he must first set Ulric free. Ulric needs to destroy the Seven to gain his independence in an effort to dismantle and obliterate the Realm but Ulric’s only ally has other plans including claiming Hope Kayrs-Kyllwood as his mate. As the Realm prepares for war, Hope must come to terms with her destiny while Paxton discovers his entire life and history has been predicated upon a lie.

As per my last review, Hope Kayrs-Kyllwood is torn between friendship and love, duty and family as it pertains to her relationship with Paxton Phoenix, and the Kurjan warrior Drake, both young men who have now come into their prime and burgeoning powers. Drake, Paxton and Hope have been dream-walking together for years but betrayal will come at the cost of their friendships, a friendship predicated upon secrets and lies, and the hunt for power. Drake’s connection to the Kurjan and Cysts may be what takes down the Seven, a connection tightly woven with a young female who is purported to be the ‘hope’ of the immortal world.

Hope Kayrs-Kyllwood is desperate to uncover the truth. The direction she must take in an effort to destroy Ulric means there will be a sacrifice: the blood of the Keys, along with the Lock, are prophesized to work together, to merge their powers, to stop Ulric from taking control but someone else has set eyes on the top, and will use any means necessary including destroying family and friends, and the woman he once claimed to love.

WARRIOR’S HOPE is the final chapter in this particular arc of the series focusing on the Seven, Ulric, and Hope Kayrs-Kyllwood but Warrior’s Hope mainly concentrates on the breakdown of friendships, and the lies that will destroy Hope, Paxton and Drake. The secondary and supporting characters are numerous and familiar including the Seven, the Kings and leaders of the supernatural divisions of the Realm, as well as Hope’s parents, Paxton’s father, and Ulric.

Rebecca Zanetti pulls the reader into an action packed story of betrayal and vengeance, power and control, deception and double-cross, trust, acceptance, and love. The premise is intriguing, captivating and enthralling; the romance is fated and passionate; the characters are desperate, powerful, determined and dynamic.

Description:
Kennedy knew challenging the power-players of the supernatural world would come at a cost, but she always thought she’d be the one to pay the price.

When Kennedy dares to open The Rain’s doors to unsanctioned paranorms, she sets off a chain of events that will test her determination like never before. As retribution, the ruthless master vampire, Arcuro, captures one of Kennedy’s closest allies. Despite the advice from those around her, she refuses to let Arcuro’s actions go unanswered.

Kennedy must navigate the politics of the paranormal world to form new alliances, but one tiny misstep could result in disaster, and one small act of indiscretion might reveal feelings Kennedy has tried so hard to ignore. If she wanted to play it safe, she would stay away from Blake and his teasing smiles. Unfortunately, she’ll need his help to have any chance to free her friend.

With doubts chipping away at her confidence and old enemies resurfacing, Kennedy comes up with a risky plan. Can she outwit the cunning master vampire? Or will her resolve to undermine him lead her down a treacherous path, putting The Rain and everyone around her in jeopardy?

Review:

Fused in Earth and Stone by Sandy Williams is the 3rd book in her wonderful Kennedy Rain series. Refresher: Kennedy Rain, our heroine, is in sole control of the Rain Hotel. What makes the Rain Hotel unique?   The hotel is a null zone for paranormals, with a treaty that has been in effect for hundreds of years; a place to recover, be at peace, or just time to relax with no pressure; a werewolf can avoid the full moon or a vampire can see the sun, or recover from an injury. The Werewolves and Vampires, plus some other unknow species take turns to come and stay at the hotel.

Kennedy is still forbidding the werewolves or vampires to enter the Rain Hotel, despite both the Wolves and Vampire leaders being very angry with her.  Kennedy knows that Shelli, the witch and her coven were the ones who killed her parents, and she wants revenge. With the inn still closed, Kennedy realizes she needs to do something to open the hotel, and allows any unsanctioned paranorms that are willing to put their names on a list that she puts up, without the approval the Lehr (or Arcuro). A number of wolves enter the hotel, which sets off a chain of events.

Beside Lehr (Werewolf leader) being angry, it is the ruthless Arcuro (Vampire master) who acts out by capturing Daegen, one of Kennedy’s allies.  Though Jared, Nora, Blake try to tell Kennedy that there is no hope to save Daegen; but she is determined to find a way to save him.  Kennedy will devise a risky plan to meet with old ancient vampires to help kill Arcuro.  Will the plan work?

When everything falls apart, she finds herself, as well as Christian, in extreme danger, with their lives in jeopardy.  Not only has an old enemy resurfaced, Kennedy will need to be a step ahead to defeat the evil who killed her parents.  Blake will also put himself in danger, when trying to rescue Kennedy at the hands of Arcuro. Can they outwit the nasty master vampire?

Kennedy is also determined to keep her human friends safe, as they have never been aware of the hotel, and the paranormals.  I liked Kennedy, who was a great heroine, as she was as stubborn as ever.  I have hoped at some time in the future, she and Blake might have a possible romance in future books; though the werewolf leader would never allow it.

What follows is a, tense and exciting story, with Kennedy in the middle of it all. There was so much action from start to finish, I could not put the book down; as it was an edge of your seat thriller.  I do not want to tell too much more, as it would ruin it for you.  As we raced to the climax, with the evil always threatening Kennedy, I really liked the ending and can’t wait for the next book. Fused in Earth and Stone was an excellent addition to this series, which was very well written by Sandy Williams

REVIEW:Mr. Hook Up is book one in what I hope will be a lengthy series by Marni Mann. For a spicy romance reader like myself, this checked ALL the boxes for a must read.

While in their final years of University, best bud trio Easton, Holden and Greyson create an app to make, you guessed it, “hooking up” easier for them, they didn’t know what they were really getting themselves into. When Drake finds himself with an almost hundred percent match, he is beyond excited to see who this mystery lady really is, all he knows about her is the username she goes by. Love. With one encounter, Easton was hooked, their chemistry was off the charts hot, and their emotional connection even stronger. But life got in the way and after their one night together, Love is in the dusk.

Fast forward five years later and Love has left an impact on Easton, he doesn’t take to relationships anymore. Enter Drake, aka Love from five years ago. She takes a job at Easton’s company not knowing who he is to her. It takes them a little while to figure out who they are to each other, and then the rest is on Easton to convince Drake to give them another shot at love.

Mr. Hook Up is a fast paced, second chance, office romance with all the feels readers are going to love. The Trio of Buds as I like to call them are freaking hilarious and I can’t wait to see what is in store for them.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 3, 2023

Safia Meziane has trained since birth to protect her tribe, the family she holds so dear. All along she told herself the legends she was raised with were simply that. But now, she must call upon all of her skills to fight what lies ahead. Evil has come to their small town on the cost of Algeria, evil that Safia can feel but cannot see.

She is terrified she will not be able to protect the ones she loves. As her family’s “chosen one,” she has always believed she would face this task alone—until her family reveals she has been promised to a warrior who will join her. An outsider. A Carpathian. . . .

Petru Cioban is one of the oldest Carpathians in existence, and he has spent all that time without the soothing presence of his lifemate. For two thousand years he has waited for this woman to be reborn, only to find her in the sights of a monster he has fought before, a vampire risen again to finish a battle started centuries ago.

Now, Petru must face his greatest enemy and his greatest shame. He has no hope that Safia will forgive his betrayal once the memories of her past life return to her. But he will not make the same mistake again, even if he has to sacrifice everything for the woman who has claimed his immortal soul.

••••

Sandy’s REVIEW: DARK MEMORY is the thirty-seventh instalment (33 plus 4 novellas) in Christine Feehan’s adult DARK CARPATHIAN erotic, paranormal romance series focusing on a group of powerful warriors known as Carpathians. This is ancient Carpathian Petru Cioban, and Safia Meziane’s story line. DARK MEMORY can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

SOME BACKGROUND: All Carpathian males must find their lifemates before they turn vampire or greet the dawn. Without a lifemate, the males no longer see in color, feel pain or experience emotions. A lifemate is the light to their dark. She is the keeper of his heart and the keeper of his soul. As the unmated Carpathian male ages, the darkness begins to envelope his soul, eventually turning the male vampire or forcing him to greet the dawn.

Told in several parts from dual omniscient third person perspectives, once again leaning strongly on the Tarot cards, DARK MEMORY follows the building relationship between Petru and Safia. Thousands of years earlier Petru found his lifemate, a five year old child, then lost her to a vampire’s madness. Fast forward to present day Petru has been told his ‘lifemate’ is alive in the current timeline, a woman who is very aware of the vampire’s existence. Safia Meziane has been trained in the ways of killing vampires and demons who escape from behind the gates of the Underworld, gates that are guarded by three powerful and ancient Carpathian women. When Petru comes face to face with his lifemate, he will discover that the danger is already present and he must claim our heroine before it is too late. What ensues is the quick building relationship between Petru and Safia, and the potential fall-out as Lilith was determined to take control

Safia Meziane has been trained to kill with a magical sword; to take down a vampire, a demon and all sorts of evil that threaten the lives of her family and friends. With the aid of Aura, an ancient Carpathian, a female whose duty it is to guard the gate to the Underworld, Safia is more than aware of the coming war, and the man that is about to take control of her world.

As per usual, there is a large ensemble cast of colorful, powerful and often dangerous secondary and supporting characters: many of Safia’s extended family and friends; Carpathian ancients Nicu Dalca, and Benedek Kovac, Tomas, Lojos and Mataias, as well as Lilith who commands the demons, the vampires, the mages from the Underworld; and a not so surprising Master vampire

DARK MEMORY continues to focus on a new series arc, one that now follows a form of reincarnation; the Tarot cards that tell the ancients of the existence of a mate, gate keepers, demons and demon slayers, hellhounds and the Underworld, as well as the woman in charge. The arc also renegotiates the death of a lifemate; the scarring of a Carpathian, and vampires that continue to work with someone else. The slow building, action-packed premise is intriguing and captivating but also familiar with a very prolonged fight scene; the romance is insta-lust to love, provocative and intense; the characters are charismatic and determined.

Barb’s REVIEW:  Dark Memory by Christine Feehan is the 33rd book in her fantastic Carpathian series.  I absolutely loved this book, as Dark Memory was fascinating and thrilling from start to finish.   Dark Memory continues the story of the remaining 4 ancients to find their Life-mates, Petru is the hero in this book, with Benedek and Nicu still to come in future books. We meet at the start, Safia Meziane, our heroine, who is an important member of her family, who live in Algeria.  Safia has trained her entire life to defend against demons, to protect her family, as she is a demon hunter. Safia worries that she will not be able to protect her family, as she is the ‘chosen one’; she is very independent, devoted to her family, and has extraordinary abilities to fight evil. She can sense the evil coming, she learns from her grandfather that she is not alone; since years ago,  she was promised to an Ancient Carpathian warrior, who will join her, with some other warriors to help in the battle.

Petru Cioban, our hero, is one of the oldest Carpathians, knowing that 2000 years he found his life mate, who was still a child, only to have lost her to the evil vampires under control by Lilith. Petru waited all these years for her to be reborn, and is determined to get there in time to help her fight another evil battle, but this time he will do anything to keep her safe.

Even though Safia, senses her life mate on his way, she manages to stop an early attack, using her ability to control animals/insects, as well as mind control others (vampires/hounds). As soon as things escalate, Petru and his group (Benedek, Nicos, Mataias, Tomas, Lojos) appear and they stop the onslaught for now; but evil Lilith is even angrier and will bring everything she has soon.   Lilith and her demons, hellhounds, vampires will use everything to kill Safia, Petru and all the family.  Can they survive?

Petru and Safia get to know each other, and in a short period, they both know they were destined to be together.   Petru was wonderful with Safia’s family, and together they all made plans on how to defeat this horrific evil. Petru marveled at how Safia had amazing mind control abilities, and knew she would always want to be able to use her powers when needed; and he easily worked closely with her. I got a kick out of Petru teaching Safia how to shift into a small bird. I love that Petru was sweet and caring, giving her time to accept their bond; I loved Petru and Safia together, as they were so good.  I did like that Safia near the end, would be able to read the cards, letting the other 4 men know they do have life-mates.

What follows is an exciting, intense story line where both Safia and Petru were in constant danger, with lives on the line.  Dark Memory was a pulse-pounding, edge of your seat thriller, that kept me unable to put the book down.  Safia and Petru were such an amazing couple, not to mention all the wonderful members of her family, who would join the battle against evil.  Dark Memory was another masterpiece by Christine Feehan. If you are a Dark/Carpathian fan, you need to read this book.

Petru drank in the sight of her. Her hair was sleek, shiny and dark from the water. It hung thick and long down her back. The moon seemed to spotlight her beauty, the oval of her face with her dark lashes framing her large, jeweled eyes. It was impossible to keep from looking at her full lips and not imagine kissing her, which was a little shocking to him. He didn’t have thoughts like that, not in the middle of a crisis.
Safia wore a royal blue one-piece bathing suit that hugged her figure like a second skin. Petru had dulled the brightness of colors to keep from hurting his eyes, but even with keeping them blurred, it was impossible to stop the vivid beauty of her from nearly blinding him. She shone like the brightest star. More, she had a natural sensuality in every line of her body that appealed to him.
There was no way to stop himself from putting his hands on her hips to hold her steady in the rough water. The moment his palms settled around her and his fingers pressed into the contours of her feminine shape, his body reacted. Discipline was gone. Unexpected fire swept through his veins every bit as hot as the blue flames in her crystal sword. Her green gaze jumped to his, confusion mixed with reluctant desire.
“Have you been here all along?” Her gaze didn’t leave his.
He realized he had to be very careful. “Yes, we have no knowledge of these demons or how to best fight them. You are the expert, and we thought it best to learn from you. We did not give away our presence for fear of distracting you.” He hoped it didn’t occur to her that he could just pull the knowledge from her mind the way he did from everyone else around him.
Benedek and Nicu both made some disparaging sound in his mind, which could have been a snicker on their private ancient path established in the monastery.
Petru thought it best to ignore the brethren and concentrate on his lifemate. Evidently, he’d given her the best answer possible. Her eyes lit up briefly, despite the wariness she was exhibiting.
“I think it best, Safia, if we allow Petru and these men to help,” Izem said. “I have little air in reserve, and if the last sea centipede is a giant, you’ll need to rest and regain your strength before you take on that large of an opponent.”
Carpathian males never allowed interference when it came to their lifemates, but Petru had gone to Safia’s father and oldest brother to ask for their advice. He was aware he knew nothing of relationships or humans. He had hurt her feelings once already through careless words. He knew she felt less than confident around him, even though those emotions were buried deep. He knew the vampire had planted those seeds in the child for Lilith. Now he kept quiet and was grateful for Izem taking control.
“But Izem . . .” Safia gave a halfhearted protest.
Izem gave her a stern look. “I don’t wish to argue over this. I will wait with Mataias for you. Rest on the boat while the demon is led farther from the harbor. Gain strength and then destroy it. Hopefully vampires stay away this night.” He leaned over, gripped his sister’s forearms and then looked at Petru. “I leave her in your care.”Excerpted from Dark Memory by Christine Feehan Copyright © 2023 by Christine Feehan. •••••

REVIEW:THE INTERN by Michele Campbell is a contemporary, adult , legal thriller focusing on law student Madison Rivera, and Judge Kathryn Conroy.

Told from omniscient third person perspectives (Madison and Kathryn) following several intersecting time lines, THE INTERN follows in the wake of Madison Rivera’s position as Judge Kathryn Conroy’s new intern. Madison Rivera is desperate to prove her brother’s innocence and with the revelation of Judge Conroy’s connections to the case, Madison is determined to uncover the truth behind her brother’s arrest and ultimately his accusations of corruption against everyone involved but all does not go according to plan when Madison finds herself blackmailed into working in the gray areas for the woman who is currently the gate keeper to her brother’s freedom . As the story progresses, Madison will find herself in the middle of a decades old investigation of betrayal, murder, and questionable law enforcement.

THE INTERN is a story of secrets and lies, power and control, betrayal and vengeance, blackmail and murder, family, double cross and deception. Akin and reminiscent of the television show ‘How to Get Away with Murder’, THE INTERN focuses on a community of law makers on the take, using their positions of power to control everyone who gets in the way. The thought provoking premise is dramatic, detailed, complex and multi-layered; the characters are questionable, devious, tragic and impassioned.

But then Andy’s world is upended. The studio is sold, and the buyer’s son demands the top seat. Out of a job and humiliated, Andy spirals. When his head clears, he decides to get as far away from Los Angeles as possible until the dust settles and he can find a new way forward.

Andy signs a six-month rental agreement for a luxurious home in a tiny, forgotten coastal town two hours from London. When he arrives, he hires a local woman to help get his affairs in order. A former journalist, Violet Smith is at a crossroads as well, and this temporary job is exactly what she needs to tide her over. But when Violet leaves the manuscript of her unfinished novel behind after work one day, Andy lets his curiosity get the best of him and is captivated by a story that begs to be adapted for the big screen. Could this be the miracle they’ve both been looking for?

In Second Act, Danielle Steel presents a heartening tale of how challenging times give way to opportunities and an original outline does not always contain the perfect ending.

Review:

Second Act by Danielle Steel is another one of her wonderful romantic novels. We meet Andy Westfield, our hero, from the start, as he is a very successful CEO of a prestigious movie studio, Global. He is the son of Hollywood royalty, always putting his career first, with a divorce years ago; but he is close to his ex and daughter. Andy loves his job, having been the head of the studio for almost 20 years; he also has no problem having women fall all over him, especially during events.

Andy is shocked to find out that the studio is being sold, and the new owners want their son to take the head honcho role; with Andy now fired, which did come with a huge severance package.  Unable to handle this shock, he began drinking, until his assistant convinces him to go abroad, he leases for 6 month a quaint home in a small coastal town near London. Andy hires a former journalist to help him organize his affairs during his stay.

Violet Smith, our heroine, is at a difficult time in her life, and is happy to accept the job as an assistant.  One day, after Violet left for the day, Andy notices a folder, which looked like a manuscript she was writing, and he became intrigued.  The next morning, he mentioned it to Violet that he thought it was an enthralling story and had so much potential to be adapted for the movies. Violet has put her heart and soul into the story, and she agrees to work with Andy on this journey to create a masterpiece.  Andy contacts his friend, Dash, who does indie movies and when he reads the story, he wants in; and together with Dash planning to set up the movie and cast; Violet fixes and completes the book, and Andy decides to be the screenwriter turning the book into a movie format. Andy was a screenwriter many years ago, before he became a CEO, and he also teaches Violet the makings of doing a screenplay.  In a short time, the relationship between Violet and Andy escalates, as they both being to fall in love with each other, as they also made a great team.

Andy, Dash and Violet put together a magnificent movie that becomes very successful, and nominated for a Golden Globe award.  At first Andy refuses to go back to the states for the awards, but Dash and Violet convince him to go, as they and some of the cast will stay at his luxury home while there.  When the movie wins best picture, Andy realizes that he has a second chance in doing what he always loved. Violet was already completing another story, and Andy would do the screenplay, with Dash doing the movie.

What follows is a heartwarming, emotional and uplifting story of hope and second chances.  I loved all the characters, as Andy and Violet were wonderful together, Dash was very good, and Andy’s daughter was very welcoming with Violet.  Andy started to receive offers, but he knew he was enjoying his current life, and he needed to decide to accept an offer or continue with his happy current life. Second Act was so very well written by Danielle Steel.  This was an enjoyable read, and I suggest you read this book.

REVIEW: GUARDING TEAGAN is the first instalment in Kaylea Cross’ contemporary, adult CRIMSON POINT SECURITY erotic, romantic suspense series-a spin off from the author’s Crimson Point Protectors and Crimson Point series, and a slight cross over with her Vengeance Series. This is Crimson Point Security agent Decker Abrams, and MI6 agent Teagan Kim’s story line. Decker and Teagan were introduced in Lethal Reprisal (Crimson Point Protectors)

Told from several omniscient third person perspectives including Teagan and Decker GUARDING TEAGAN follows in the aftermath of the murder of Teagan’s cousin Lily, a woman who witnessed a possible crime. Determined to bring the killer to justice, Teagan now working with the DEA, finds herself up close and personal with a former one-night stand, in the guise of Crimson Point Security (CPS) agent Decker Abrams. CPS has been contracted by the DEA in a joint investigation into a possible drug smuggling ring, and our couple are about to be caught in the middle when Teagan suspects a possible mole in the DEA. From the outset, the investigation begins to spiral out of control when Teagan becomes the target of a desperate man. What ensues is the rebuilding relationship between Decker and Teagan, and the potential fall-out as the DEA refuses to back our story line heroine.

The world building brings together some of the characters and couples we met in the interconnected series, giving the new series a sense of cohesion and familiarity. We are introduced to new agents, and old friends, as the author sets up the who and why of Crimson Point Security.

The relationship between Teagan and Decker is one of second chances, of a sort. Teagan and Decker spent one glorious night together after rescuing Decker’s sister but Teagan ghosted Decker, and our hero has never forgot about the woman that got away. Working together to take down a killer, Decker finds himself falling hard, refusing to walk when all was said and done. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top sexually graphic language and text.

We are reintroduced to several previous story line characters including Decker’s half siblings: Marley and Warwick (Lethal Reprisal) as well as Gavin and Tristan; former Special Forces soldier Creed; DEA Agent Clive, and Teagan’s parents Joseph and Annie. The requisite evil has many faces. Creed and Bella’s story line is next.

GUARDING TEAGAN is a story of power and control, murder and drug smuggling, suspense and intriguing, friendships and love. The fast paced premise is entertaining, dramatic and thrilling; the romance is seductive; the characters are charismatic, determined and dynamic.
