REVIEW: VELVET KINGDOM by BB Hamel is a contemporary, adult, dark, Mafia romance story line focusing on the Rossi Famiglia Don Renzo Ross, and his office assistant Madeline ‘Maddie’ Sorrento.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Renzo and Maddie) VELVET KINGDOM follows the fake relationship and marriage between our story line couple. Maddie Sorrento’s boyfriend took everything the day he said they were never going to work but Maddie never expected to find herself considering her boss’s offer of a fake marriage and real pregnancy in the face of his own humiliation when the woman he was contracted to marry ran away. With no other options, and her own sense of self esteem in the proverbial gutter, Maddie accepts Renzo’s offer, an offer with an expiry date and the potential sacrifice of a child she could love. What ensues is the building relationship between Maddie and Renzo, and the fall-out when the other heads of the crime world families don’t agree with Renzo’s plans for the future.

The world building focuses on several paths including the Rossi family matriarch’s health struggles, the siblings inability to accept what will be, and the jealousy and threats inflicted upon our story line heroine. From the outset, Renzo treats Maddie with respect and love, and in this, our couple will find themselves falling in love against their original plans.

The relationship between Maddie and Renzo begins as employee and boss but desperate for an heir and internal support, Renzo offers Maddie money and marriage, a marriage that comes with an expiry date should they have a child together. Maddie refuses to leave any child behind, and a pregnancy may be the biggest threat to their growing relationship. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to the Rossi family siblings: Stefania, Carlo, Saul and Gian, as well as their mother Stella, and Renzo’s right hand man Dante; several heads of competing crime families, as well as Maddie’s friend Nicole, and housekeeper Tara. The requisite evil has many faces.

VELVET KINGDOM is a story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, secrets and lies, acceptance and love. The fast paced premise is entertaining and inviting but the conflict is limited; the romance is seductive and sensitive; the characters are energetic, sassy and spirited. VELVET KINGDOM ends on a happily ever after-for now, as the main threat to the family has yet to be resolved.

REVIEW: CONTACT is the first instalment in Jessica Marting’s adult NEW EDEN erotic, sci-fi romance series. This is RH103 aka Rhys Hammond, and Hannah Forsyth’s story line.

Told from omniscient dual third person perspectives (Rhys and Hannah) CONTACT follows in the wake of the arrival of a spaceship and a crew of cyborg soldiers on New Eden. Approximately two years earlier, a devastating earthquake destroyed most of New Eden, and in doing so, killed all but twenty-one of the original inhabitants. Desperate for help, Hanna Forsyth sent out an SOS but never expected to come face to face with her future in the guise of RH103. RH103 and his crew had been searching for a new home since an ion storm wiped out the planet where they had been. Responding to Hannah’s SOS , RH103 and his crew would find the peace and friendship they had been looking for but RH103 aka Rhys never expected to fall in love. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between our story line couple, and the potential fall-out as memories from the past threaten to end the life of our story line hero.

The world building reveals some of the back story and histories of our story line couple. RH103 and his crew were once human but centuries of cloning created the ultimate soldier. Hoping to settle,RH103 intercepted Hannah’s transmission, and discovered a planet in need of help. Hannah Forsyth had become the de facto leader of their small community, a community of twenty survivors of a deadly earthquake. Unprepared and without most the minimal resources built by their founding fathers, Hannah worked diligently to keep the survivors alive, some who did not appreciate the work being done.

The relationship between Rhys and Hannah is one of immediate attraction although Rhys is unaware of the how or why. Centuries of obedience and working on command, would be replaced by autonomy and self-awareness such that each member of his crew would become an individual within the cyborgenic hive. As Rhys re-discovers his humanity, Hannah will discover she has fallen in love with more than a man. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to several members of the New Eden community including Hannah’s friends Jasmine and Rodelle, as well as Rhy’s twenty-man crew of fellow cyborgs: SP29 aka Samuel, and DL16 aka Darius-there is something developing between Jasmine , SP29 and DL16.

CONTACT is a story of discovery and acceptance, family, friendships, relationships and love. The intriguing premise is captivating but most of the conflict is contained to first contact; the romance is seductive and exploratory; the characters are charismatic and charming.

REVIEW:I just love small town romance! Love in Kentbury is the third installment in the series, and while it may be third, it can be read as a standalone in the series. This story was so sweet and loving, it was like getting the best bear hug when you really need one.

Henrik and Louanne’s story is sweet like the first bite of chocolate after a really bad day. Henrik is a bit broken and lost after his hockey career with the Boston Blizzards takes a hit. He spends his time leading a much more mellow life than before, in his remote cabin, teaching others to ice skate. Louanne is a bit the same; her husband cheats on her, then puts her through a horrible divorce, takes her kids from her and leaves her with nothing. So she returns home in hope of mending some family fences and getting her life back, aka her kids.

When Henrik learns that Louanne has returned, and what happened with her children, he is all on board to help her, he just isn’t sure how to at first. Neither have seen each other for years, so when they start working together they don’t know what to think of the chemistry they are feeling. Louanne, however much into her feelings for Henrik, is scared to get too close and have the chance at getting her kids back, taken away. They both know that sometimes in life, things don’t go the way you think and love doesn’t always mean forever.

This book is all about feelings and I can’t believe how real it felt reading. Henrik and Louanne
and the emotions they were experiencing, were so real. I give the author major great for her plot and storyline, this book was amazing.

REVIEW:Let’s see if I can keep this short and sweet…Broken is book three in the paranormal romance series by Layla Frost. The first two books, Styx and Stoned must be read before going into Broken, there is far too much goodness that happens in the first two books that readers can’t miss.

Lennon and Lilith’s story was the best way to start off the month of love. These two are such a kick in the pants together, even without all the other drama going on in the storyline, the two main leads will take you on the best adventure. Readers who love a little grumpy/sunshine romance, tossed in with fated mates and paranormal vibes, you will love Broken. Be warned though fellow readers, you will live in all your feels for a while after this one! I sure did.

Fantastic job to Ms. Author, we patiently waited for the next book in the Four series, and I can totally say it was well worth the wait. But I totally can’t wait to see what comes next of our lovely little group of crazies.

Growing up, Layla Frost used to hide under her blanket with a flashlight to read the Sweet Valley High books she pilfered from her older sister. It wasn’t long before she was reading hidden Harlequins during class at school. This snowballed into pulling all-nighters after the promise of “just one more chapter”.

REVIEW: INTO THE BARGAIN by Colleen Cowley is an adult, fantasy romance, dystopian novella set in the author’s CLANDESTINE MAGIC world. This is twenty-five year old Pen Novak, and the omnimancer’s assistant story.

SOME BACKGROUND: Some time in the middle of the twenty-first century, America is controlled by wizards and magic, and women’s rights are behind by more than a century. Only men aka wizards are granted the use of magic, women are meant to be seen and not heard.

Told from omniscient third person perspective (Pen) INTO THE BARGAIN follows Pen Novak and her desperate attempts to find a husband. Two weeks before she will be homeless, Pen wants to meet the local omnimancer, a man searching for a woman to be his wife but the wizard is not at home. Pen finds herself returning daily, and with the help of the omnimancer’s assistant, is willing to stake her claim before anyone else. All is not as it appears to be, and Pen will find herself falling for a man whose own life has been destroyed by someone else.

The relationship between Pen and the assistant begins as a bargain, of a sorts. Pen visits every day, staying in the house owned by the wizard, while the assistant begins to slowly reveal the reality of the situation. Falling for the assistant was never in the plans but Pen will discover the secrets and lies of the man she was hoping to love. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate but mostly implied.

INTO THE BARGAIN is a novella length story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, magic and mayhem, secrets and lies, acceptance and love. The fast paced premise is intriguing and entertaining; the romance is seductive; the characters are desperate yet dynamic.

1. “Colleen Cowley” is not my normal, everyday name. It is a family name of sorts, though.

2. In my teens, I wrote a really awful high fantasy with a portal and many other clichés. And then I took a novel-writing break that I thought would be permanent.

3. As much as I love The Hobbit, my favorite sort of fantasy is set in our world. There’s such possibility in the idea that something magical could be happening right under your nose.

4. I am a sucker for stories with billowing coats, banter and wizards.

5. All forests, I suspect, are at least a little bit magic.

Told from four first person perspectives (Henny, Raiden, Reaper and Devil) TWISTED IRON focuses on the take down of a cult, a child trafficking ring. When the RBMC come looking for information, Henriette aka Henny will offer herself up a collateral, in the hopes her friend will hand the information to the RBMC but days together find Henny falling for her captors, three men with special abilities, and powers she could not have imagined. What ensues is the building and aggressive relationship between Henny and Raiden, Reaper and Devil, and the potential fall-out as Henny is targeted by the demons from her past.

The world building focuses on the search for information, and the take down of the cult / Order known as The Sect of Primordial Light. Not only do several members of the RBMC have dark memories but so too does our story line heroine.

The relationship between Henny and the men begins as a sacrifice, of sorts. The men are looking for a package, information about the who, how and why, but when no one is willing to reveal the truth, Henny offers herself up as prisoner in exchange for the life of her friend. Within day, Henny realizes the trio are more than your average men but men with special abilities that she is learning to see through. The $ex scenes are erotic and intense but there are no scenes with all four together.

The secondary and supporting characters include several member of both the RBMC Tonopah, and Las Vegas chapter, as well as Henny’s friend Amelia. The requisite evil has many faces.

TWISTED IRON is a story of secrets and lies, power and control, betrayal and vengeance, acceptance, love and the supernatural. The premise is dramatic and dark; the characters are powerful yet broken; the romance is desperate and gritty. TWISTED IRON ends on a bit of a cliff hanger-you have been warned.
