Only so much pain the mind can take before it succumbs to the beast within.

Beast

I watch her lose herself. Saw the pain she endured. No matter the help I wanted to give her, nothing will do. She’s lost to me. There’s no way she can take anymore. Nor does she need a man like me. A man who has his own demons to hold on to.

With her at the clubhouse, I need to get away, but when death comes to our door, my demons demand out. Secrets I’ve held onto are revealed and there’s only one who keeps me sane. Her. Will she be able to handle it all? Or am I left to my own demise?

My brothers can’t help. Not this time. I’m called Beast for a reason and now they all know why.

••••••

REVIEW: HOLDING BEAST is the seventh instalment in EC Land’s contemporary, adult SATAN’S KEEPERS MC dark, erotic, MC romance series. This is Jarrett aka ‘Beast’ and Bristol Hensley’s story line. HOLDING BEAST can be read as a stand alone but for back story and cohesion, I recommend reading the series in order.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there WILL BE triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Beast and Bristol), and a final chapter from Diablo, HOLDING BEAST follows in the wake of an attack on our story line heroine that left her for dead. Eight months earlier, Bristol worked at the MC owned Keeper’s Pub, and in the aftermath of the attack Beast kept his distance believing he was not worthy of our story line heroine. Months will pass before Beast returns, and in doing so, Beast will claim Bristol as his own but all is not well in either of their lives, and connections to family and the past refuse to let go. What ensues is the building relationship between our story line couple, and the potential fall-out as secrets and lies threaten to destroy what Bristol and Beast are struggling to rebuild.

The world building follows several paths including two powerful families, organized crime, European royalty, spousal abuse, betrayal and lies. As Bristol and Beast struggle to move their relationship forward, Bristol’s mother has plans for her daughter that do not include our story line hero.

The relationship between Bristol and Beast is acrimonious at best. Secrets and lies, miscommunication and misunderstandings threaten what little relationship there is. Months apart force Beast to acknowledge his need for our story line heroine but Bristol struggles with what happened and why. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, familiar and questionable secondary and supporting characters including the members of the Satan’s Keepers MC and their wives. We are introduced to extended family including Beast’s brother Everett; and Bristol’s brother Ben, their sister Giselle, and father Quinten Hensley. The requisite evil has many faces.

HOLDING BEAST is a story of betrayal and vengeance, greed and obsession, jealousy and money, family and relationships, friendships and love. The fast paced premise is dramatic and intense; the romance is seductive and provocative; the character are desperate, determined and dynamic.

The Boy Who Cried Bear (Haven’s Rock 2) by Kelley Armstrong-review

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Google Play /Chapters Indigo /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 20, 2024

Haven’s Rock is a well-hidden town surrounded by forest. And it’s supposed to be, being that it’s a refuge for those who need to disappear. Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton already feel at home in their new town, which reminds them of where they first met in Rockton. And while they know how to navigate the woods and its various dangers, other residents don’t. Which is why people aren’t allowed to wander off alone.

When Max, the town’s youngest resident—taught to track animals by Eric—fears a bear is stalking a hiking party, alarms are raised. Even stranger, the ten-year-old swears the bear had human eyes. Casey and Eric know the dangers a bear can present, so they’re taking it seriously. But odd occurrences are happening all around them, and when a dead body turns up, they’re not sure what they’re up against.

REVIEW:THE BOY WHO CRIED BEAR is the second instalment in Kelley Armstrong’s contemporary adult HAVEN’S ROCK mystery, thriller series set in the fictional town of Haven’s Rock, Yukon a spin off from the author’s ROCKTON series focusing on Detective Casey Duncan and her husband Sheriff Eric Dalton.

SOME BACKGROUND: Rockton Yukon did not exist on any map, and the residents all had a questionable past, fake names and false histories. Most were once considered to be white collar crimes but with increasing regularity, hardened criminals have somehow paid their way into Rockton, seeking sanctuary against future prosecution, a safe place for two years before seeking asylum somewhere else. A serial killer destroyed the people and ultimately the town of Rockton Yukon, and with the help of some of their former friends and a big influx of cash, Detective Casey Duncan and her husband Sheriff Eric Dalton, begin the task of building a new town, known as Haven’s Rock, a town that will expose our couple to more murders and questionable inhabitants.

Told from first person perspective (Casey Duncan) and several omniscient third person perspectives including Max, THE BOY WHO CRIED BEAR follows in the wake of the possible abduction of a ten year old boy. Out for a walk in the Yukon wilderness, ten year old Max claims he saw a man-bear, a possible wild man but no one believes his story. Desperate to prove everyone wrong, Max goes into the forest alone, and doesn’t return, leading the people of Haven’s Rock to believe one of their own may have taken the ten year old boy. A search ensues under the direction of Detective Casey Duncan and her husband Sheriff Eric Dalton but a missing boy is the least of their worries. A dead man from a neighboring mining camp is just the beginning, and now there is a possibility of a killer on the loose.

THE BOY WHO CRIED BEAR is a slow building story of mystery and suspense. Like most of the townsfolk, we no very little about the individuals who have sought refuge in Haven’s Rock, but the possibility of a another killer in their midst means someone else may have lied about the who, how and why. The members of an all-male mining camp are suspect but when lines are drawn, Casey and Eric begin to suspect a much bigger issue at play.

Kelley Armstrong pulls the reader into a story of power and control, madness and obsession, family and friendships. The premise is dramatic and intense. There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, determined, and desperate characters, not all of whom will survive.

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers’ dismay. All efforts to make her produce “normal” stories failed.

Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She’s the author of the NYT-bestselling “Women of the Otherworld” paranormal suspense series and “Darkest Powers” young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.

REVIEW:THE MURDER CLUB is the fifth instalment in Alexandra Ivy’s contemporary, adult PIKE, WISCONSIN mystery, suspense series . This is pawn shop owner/ television personality Dom Lucier, and registered nurse Bailey Evans’ story line. THE MURDER CLUB can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty . Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary . Bailey is Sheriff Zac Evans’ (UNSTABLE #3) cousin.

Told from omniscient dual third person perspectives (Dom and Bailey) following several intersecting paths, THE MURDER CLUB follows in the wake of the death of a local nursing home resident, a death blamed on our story line heroine. Months earlier Bailey Evans met television personality Dom Lucier at the wedding of mutual friends (Kaden and Lia: Desperate Acts #4), and his arrival in Pike, Wisconsin coincides with Bailey’s life spiralling out of control. Dom Lucier is temporarily living at Kaden’s place in Pike where he will seek out the woman who stole his heart but Pike’s reputation as the murder capital of America is about to push our couple together in more ways than one. Enter Bailey Evans. Bailey is a nurse who loves her clients but the death of a resident, and her subsequent inheritance of several thousand dollars places our heroine at the top of the list when several other items go missing, and the nursing home owner refuses to listen to reason. With the help of Dom, Bailey goes in search of the truth, a search that has more twists and turns the deeper our couple dig into the investigation. With everyone having a motive, and a potential stalker targeting our story line heroine, Dom and Bailey begin an investigation of their own only to discover there are more players and suspects than they could have ever imagined.

The world building is detailed and complex as the number of potential suspects, clues and possible red herrings enter into the investigation. As a former member of an online Murder Club, a group that re-investigates murders and deaths that were never solved, Bailey finds herself in a threatening situation when she refuses to ‘play the game’, a game playing out in Pike, Wisconsin. As the number of victims begin to amass, Bailey and Dom’s search reveals a web of vengeance for sins of the past.

The relationship between Bailey and Dom is one of friendship that will quickly turn into something more. Bailey is in need of protection, and Dom volunteers to guard the woman with whom he is falling in love. There are no $ex scenes , everything is implied.

THE MURDER CLUB is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, jealousy, obsession and murder, friendships and love. The premise is intriguing but not believable on so many levels-in this I struggled to accept the concept of our couple as the principle investigators. The characters are energetic; the romance is limited, but I felt no palpable sexual attraction.

REVIEW:THE SECRETS THAT KILL is the first instalment in Kristen Luciani’s contemporary adult OBSIDIAN KNIGHTS SECRET SOCIETY dark, erotic, romance series focusing on a secret society of billionaires and assassins. This is billionaire Mercer Vale, and twenty-three year old, college student Ivy Gardner.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise including graphic scenes of BDSM and Dom/sub scenarios, there WILL BE triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Mercer and Ivy ) THE SECRETS THAT KILL follows the unconventional and questionable relationship between our story line couple. Mercer Vale blames Ivy Gardner for the implosion of his life, years before. Demanding payment for sins of the past, Mercer takes control of Ivy’s life, forcing our heroine into a world she knows nothing about. As Mercer’s submissive, Ivy is about to become a pawn in a dangerous game of murder and vengeance wherein years of betrayal culminate in the ultimate showdown, and consent is questionable at every turn.

The world building is complex and gritty. Power and vengeance are the focus for one man who is struggling for control of his life. His need to avenge is bred from years of trauma and abuse, and Ivy will become a victim of revenge, jealousy and obsession.

The relationship between Ivy and Mercer is atypical and forced. Ivy will become Mercer’s captive, a sexual slave, a submissive to be used when and how Mercer demands. Consent is questionable from the outset but Ivy will succumb to Mercer’s needs and demands, often instigating and pushing Mercer to the edge of control. The $ex scenes are aggressive, intense and provocative.

There is a large ensemble cast of questionable, controversial and dark characters. We are introduced to a secret society whose members are cruel, and their actions are heinous.

THE SECRETS THAT KILL is a dark story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, secrets and lies, domination and submission, acceptance and love. The premise is dark, dramatic and tragic; the characters are desperate and contentious.

The moment she walks into the party, the air pressure changes.
It becomes thicker, alight with all the dark fucking possibilities that come along with her.
I know, because I can think of things so depraved, twisted, and thrilling even the unrepentant in Hell’s depths would moan with pleasure.
I know, because I’ve done many of those things.
She sets off a vibrating edge, a sliver of excitement. The air sings when she’s near.
I can use that.
And I’m going to.
Just not yet.
Because the wait brings the pitch up to a sweeter level.
I’m also busy watching a dead man walking.
Right now, the poison’s destroyed his liver and kidneys, unraveling his DNA. He’s dead. It just hasn’t come full circle. Even if he was rushed to a hospital, he’d still end up dying.
I spent a long time devising the poison. Tasteless, odorless. Untraceable. Death cap mushrooms are a marvel, my favorite weapon when I’m not working with guns or knives.
But poisons take time. The right approach, the right formula, the right administration. And then they require time to work. Get one thing wrong, rush a step, and it all crumbles.
Patience, they say, is a virtue. And I play that game like a prodigy.
Stone-cold. A killer. These are me. I’m also rich as fuck. So rich my past can’t touch me. That long and scarred path that stretches as far back as I can remember might not have ever been paved with gold, but tools? Things that have enabled me to become who I am? This version of Mercer Vale?
Fuck yes.
Logan Cooke begins to sweat. There’s a flicker of light in his eyes, a sign of things not quite right. But nobody notices.
And no one will.
The people surrounding me are off their tits and balls on coke and drunk on thirty-dollar artisanal cocktails. Not one of them is going to notice until Cooke hits the floor.

This is the height of the below-Fourteenth Street crowd’s pomposity. As one of the silent, hidden owners, Seven7Seven makes me a shit ton of money, and I can keep an eye on movers and shakers of all kinds.

Some of them I might need to dispose of.
The Barnes and Noble and Japanese convenience store on the ground level don’t even hint at what’s up here. A person has to book a spot weeks in advance or receive a special invite. The place is well-known to its very specific target audience, and entry is highly coveted.
I settle back in the shadows and observe.
I don’t need to be here. Cooke’s demise is a done deal, and glitterati parties are not my fucking jam. With the next job I decided to take on? Let’s just say there are other avenues to get what I need. But there’s a certain symmetry, an air of fate about doing it this way.
Not real fate. This is crafted down to the finest detail of the evening, complete with her arrival on the dot. But like all good artists, it’s going to appear seamless, effortless. A natural occurrence, just like fate. And when she realizes there isn’t a drop of serendipity or chance of any kind involved, her real fate, her future, finite as it is, will be sealed.
But I still refuse to look at Ivy Gardner. Not yet.
I want to time everything perfectly. Cooke, my revenge, my next project—

Too bad I’d already betrayed him.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 15, 2024

I’m the Director of Haven, a newly established sanctuary for all the misused and mistreated humans that The Harem Project recovers from the Division of Silence. I have my hands full, trying to save as many lives as I can.

Then a chance meeting has me virtually running into the men that hold a piece of my heavenly soul and my world shifts. My sense of duty pulls me to focus on Haven, but my instincts insist I make these men mine.

Finding balance isn’t easy, but somehow I manage to find peace in both the professional and personal aspects of my life. I can do this. I can do good and make my home with these divine men.

My name is Tatum and I just joined an all out war with a family whose power is such a threat to the monsters of Silence that we’re nearly number one on their hit list. Instead of waiting for them to target our family, we just jumped into the massacre happening before us.

••••••

REVIEW:There were so many things happening and character crossovers in this book that I think it would be helpful to read the series in order.

There are a couple of triggers you need to aware of, so my advice is check the warnings for jumping in…..

This book is all about Tatum and her relationship with the Malak family. (It’s been the one I’ve wanted to read for a while, they have been mentioned a few times in previous books.)

Whilst learning about the men that will soon become her husbands, she is also working at The Harem Project. She’s working in the facility called Haven, and is on a project for the orphaned children that have lost family through the fight against The Silence and ORKA. (See, I told you there was lots going on.) She’s also looking after the women who were taken and impregnated and children who are the result of those unwanted pregnancies!

Tobiel/Aden/Cobalt/Hawthorn/Lazarus/Hadrian/Rahael are an established family, but they still long for their wife. And when Tobiel meets her, he wants to take her back to his home and introduce her to the rest of the family. But bumping into briefly and then not being able to find his angel (yes she’s an actual archangel) is frustrating Toby. And to make things worse, his husbands don’t seem to be in a rush to find her!

But when he finally meets her, it’s full steam ahead with the courtship ? he’s certain Tatum is the one. And Tatum is definitely interested in getting to know the Malak family.

In this book you also get a few questions answered from previous books. It really starts to come together.

The Silence and ORKA have been increasing their attacks on the families we’ve read about, but it’s the Division of Silence that have taken a darker turn! Using women and children in their fight to win against the “houses” and the “monsters” that live in this world! When I’m fact they are the monsters!

I don’t think it’s a smexy as previous books in the series, I got the feeling we are focusing on the storyline. It’s more of a slow burn this time and again as there are so many characters in this family (seven established if I remember correctly) pages seem to focus mainly on Tatum/Tobiel (which can be a blessing at times ?) but we get to meet and interact with the whole Malak family.

So when The Silence coordinates an attack on the families, will they be able to protect themselves and the children? Will they be able to fight back?

There is betrayal. Plot twists and catching up with previous houses. I really did enjoy reading this one.

Highly recommend you read in order then this one.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 16, 2024

Winston Ashford, not exactly Prince Charming.

Arrogant. ✅
Bastard. ✅
Gorgeous. ✅

I’d mistaken him for a ten when he turned out to be a minus five. He was so beautiful but damaged beyond repair. There was no amount of understanding or loving that could save a man who didn’t want to be saved. So after one night together, I gladly washed my hands of him.

Until everything went south.

My father was dead. My sister needed help, and it was time I behaved like a responsible older sister, one with a plan.

Unfortunately, my plan was slightly…lacking.

When I was caught red-handed stealing from my less than wonderful one-night stand, Winston Ashford became intent on bending me to his will.

It turned out that he was as ruthless as he was gorgeous and cruel as he was tender.

Forced into an unwanted arrangement with the arrogant bastard, the kind that required rings, my last name became his. I became his reluctant, yet thankfully, secret wife. Unfortunately, he became the man who unknowingly held all the cards. At least we went our separate ways even if legally we were still bound together.

Six lonely years later, our paths crossed again.

There was still a darkness inside of him that scared me down to my very core.

He claimed he wanted a real marriage. That he was a changed man. But deep down, he was still the same. Damaged. Battling invisible scars and habits that were hard to break.

He saved me once upon a time. It was time for me to save him.

But what happens when I’m not enough?

REVIEW:SECRETS OF A BILLIONAIRE is the third instalment in Eva Winners’ contemporary, adult BILLIONAIRE KINGS dark, erotic, romance series. This is billionaire businessman Winston Ashford, and jewelry designer Billie Swan’s story line. SECRETS OF A BILLIONAIRE can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading book two Misdeeds of a Billionaire, Byron Ashford and Billie’s sister Odette’s story line. SECRETS OF A BILLIONAIRE runs parallel to, and crosses over with events of book two MISDEEDS OF A BILLIONAIRE.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Winston and Billie) covering six and a half years, using present day and memories from the past, SECRETS OF A BILLIONAIRE follows in the wake of a one-night stand. Six years earlier, Billie’s beloved father lost everything, and desperate to help, Billie devised an ill-conceived plan to rob our story line hero. Caught, with only two choices, Billie reluctantly agreed to marry her target, Winston Ashford, but a conversation she was not meant to overhear, forces Billie on the run for six years before coming face to face with the man to whom she was married. Enter Winston Ashford. Winston was desperate to reconnect with his wife, a woman in trouble but a woman he believes is keeping too many secrets. Along with her sister Odette (Misdeeds of a Billionaire), our heroine found herself in a life and death situation with a bag of stolen diamonds, and a price on their heads. Reuniting with Winston meant bowing down to a man she refused to love, a man who was about to offer everything and more. What ensues is the building but acrimonious relationship between Billie and Winston, and the potential fall-out as Billie refuses to accept our story line hero.

The world building is complex. We are up close and personal with Winston’s time in the military, the abuse and neglect of a father who ruled by power, and a young woman desperate to save her family and friends. Billie’s attempted theft placed her in a precarious position, a position in which she acted beyond contempt.

The relationship between Billie and Winston is tempestuous at best. Billie is belligerent, immature, condescending and always angry but secrets reveal a connection between the Ashford and Swan families, secrets that push Billie to run from the man with whom she will fall in love. Six years apart, on the run with her sister Odette, Billie finds herself in a precarious situation brought on by desperation and greed. Winston is a man with the ability to take charge but the past refuses to let go, and Winston struggles with the ghosts from the past. The $ex scenes are provocative and intense.

The colorful and charismatic secondary and supporting characters include Winston’s brother Byron, Royce, and their sister Aurora; their father Senator Ashford, as well as Billie’s sister Odette.

SECRETS OF A BILLIONAIRE is a story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, dysfunctional family values, forgiveness, acceptance and love. The premise is dark and dramatic; the romance struggles in the face of numerous betrayals; the characters are desperate, determined, questionable and dynamic.
