ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 21, 2024

A tantalizing novel of two women bound by blood but divided by a long-buried secret, and the island that holds the key to the fateful summer that changed everything forever. In 1959, Hollywood ingenue Mercy Welles seems to have the world at her feet. Far removed from her Nebraska roots, she has crafted herself into a glamorous Oscar-nominated actress engaged to an up-and-coming director… Until she shockingly vanishes without a trace, just as her career is taking off.

Almost sixty years later, Kit O’Neill, a junior television producer in Manhattan, is packing up her recently deceased grandmother’s attic, only to discover a long-lost box of souvenirs that reveal that the grandmother who raised her and her sister Claire was, in fact, the mysterious Mercy Welles. Putting her investigative skills to use, Kit is determined to solve the riddle of her grandmother’s missing life, and the trail eventually leads to Martha’s Vineyard. Mercy retreats to the island nursing a broken heart, only to be drawn to the roguish Ren Sewards, who is not just the simple oysterman he appears to be but a scion of one of the island’s wealthy founding families. With her attraction to Ren quickly growing, Mercy soon finds herself entangled in the intrigues of the tightly knit community and the secrets of the Sewards.

Alternating between Mercy and Kit’s timelines, including excerpts from letters Mercy wrote the summer she disappeared, The Lost Letters from Martha’s Vineyard unfurls into a heart-stopping story of love, betrayal, and even murder.

REVIEW: THE LOST LETTERS FROM MARTHA’S VINEYARD by Michael Callahan is an adult historical story of woman’s fiction focusing on Hollywood actress Mercy Welles aka Edith, and journalist Kit O’Neill

Told from several third person perspectives and numerous timelines ( 1944, 1959 and 2018), using present day, memories and letters from the past THE LOST LETTERS FROM MARTHA’S VINEYARD follows journalist Kit O’Neill as she goes in search of her grandmother’s past. After hunting through the attic of her late grandmother Edith’s home, Kit discovers a collection of letters, pictures and memorabilia focusing on the Hollywood actress Mercy Welles, a woman she will come to learn is her grandmother Edith aka Nan. Retracing her grandmother’s past, Kit will discover somethings were better left behind.

Meanwhile, back in 1959, Mercy Welles is struggling with betrayal and heartbreak. Needing a short break from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood, Mercy Welles spends the summer on Martha’s Vineyard, where her life will be forever changed.

As the past collides with the future, threatening to repeat itself, Kit O’Neill is caught between the secrets and lies for which people were willing to kill.

The secondary characters include Mercy’s best friend Cass Goldman; Mercy’s summer romance lover Warren ‘Ren’ Stewards, his brother Patrick, and their mother Mint; Kit’s sister Claire, and an eclectic cast of characters, most of whom with an axe to grind or secrets to hide.

THE LOST LETTER FROM MARTHA’S VINEYARD is a thought-provoking story of betrayal and vengeance, secrets and lies, murder and chaos, family and friendships, love and loss. The premise is detailed, dramatic, and heart breaking; the characters are determined, desperate and animated.

I wrote my first story when I was five.

As I recall, it pertained to a king, a princess, and some missing treasure, though not necessarily in that order. At the end of the tale, it is revealed that the king had died of a broken heart—at the age of 96. My parents found this hilarious.

The point is, I have been telling stories for a long time. In eighth grade I entered the archdiocesan essay contest, whose topic was “What the Canonization of St. John Neumann Means to Me.” Evidently it meant quite a lot: I won. It was then, at the tender age of 13, that I decided I was going to be a writer. Not many people determine their careers in grammar school, but I did.

I was blessed to work as a writer and editor during an era when American magazines were still glossy, thick, and glamorous. My career took me from Atlantic City to northern New Jersey to Boston to New York to Philadelphia and, eventually, out to Los Angeles. I’ve worked as an editor at and written for some of the most storied titles in publishing: Vanity Fair, Esquire, ESPN The Magazine, Departures, Town & Country, The Hollywood Reporter, and Golf Digest, among many others. As an editor I’ve worked with some incredible award-winning writers, including Buzz Bissinger, Jessica Pressler, Simon van Zuylen-Wood, Terry McMillan, Alexandra Styron, Samantha Power, and Benjamin Wallace, to name a few. Today I am proud to be the editorial director at UCLA Magazine, helping to tell the story of the top-ranked public university in the nation, while also serving as an occasional contributing critic for both the New York Times Book Review and W.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 23, 2024

Ten years ago, Vadim Ivanov broke my heart.
Now he’s back. Bringing death and chaos with him.

VADIM

Hearing Kesera’s voice on the radio makes me want her. But wanting a woman won’t help me win a mafia war, especially not the mother of my child. I can’t expose them to the violence in my world. Love makes you vulnerable. It’s a luxury I can’t afford.

She needs to disappear, even if she takes my heart with her a second time.

KESERA

I spent a decade searching for a man who didn’t want to be found. I learned to fight my own battles and bring up our daughter like her father never existed. Now he thinks he can tell me what to do. I don’t take orders, even from a mafia boss.

Even if he’s the man I love. Can love survive odds like this?

••••

REVIEW:Brutal Secrets is an emotional roller coaster filled with drama, spice and all the Daddy vibes. For all the mafia lovers out there, this will be right up your alley. The storyline moves a little slow at first, but as the plot develops, the pace does pick up.

Kasera is a singer, living a normal-ish life, trying to get through to the next day without being seen. After a set one night, her skeezy manager makes a move on her and doesn’t take no for an answer. Enter in Vadim.

Vadim works for the Russian Mafia as hired muscle, on the night of a special event, he is starstruck by the voice of an angel. It does something to his soul that he has never experienced before, and he wants to hear more of it. While he is out on his run of the property, he sees the owner of the voice (Sera) being harassed, and does what he does best. Protect. He whisks her away to safety where they spend the weekend together.

Alas, a good book always has a twist. Sera had to return to the states and now ten years later she is searching for Vadim again with their ten year old daughter in tow. A whole lot of crazy happiness when Sera does finally find, he is not the same man she fell in love with all those years ago.

Honestly this book was a little difficult to follow at first, it moved a little slowly to start, but once it does finally get going, boy oh boy does it go. Brutal Secrets is an intense, romantic suspense, mafia trope that is sure to keep its readers engaged and entertained.

WHEN LIES UNFOLD by RC Boldt-review tour

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 23, 2024

The moment I witness a murder, my quiet, careful existence goes up in smoke. I’m thrust into the world of Santiago Hernández, Central America’s most ruthless cartel leader.

In exchange for my life, I’m placed under his watchful eye. Day in and day out, he waits for me to betray my promise of silence.

The longer I stay in his world, the deeper I fall for the glimpses of the man beneath that handsome yet cunning exterior. The man whose possessive touch ignites a long-lost part of me.

But I should know better than to open my heart to a cold-blooded criminal with a laundry list of deadly sins and secrets. Especially when he has no idea who I really am.

Because when the lies unfold, he’ll discover I have a list of sins and secrets of my own.

••••••

REVIEW: WHEN LIES UNFOLD by RC Boldt is a stand alone, contemporary, adult, crime world, romance story line focusing on Central America cartel leader Santiago Hernandez, and twenty-nine year old, cleaning lady Lola Arias.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise including graphic violence, there WILL BE triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Lola and Santiago) WHEN LIES UNFOLD follows in the wake of a murder. Lola Arias is the lone witness to a murder while cleaning her client’s home but when she is discovered by the people responsible, including cartel leader Santiago Hernandez, Lola finds herself a virtual prisoner, able to do her job, but with a caveat and security watching her every move. Santiago Hernandez struggles between head and heart knowing he should take out the only witness but something about Lola tugs at his heart. Moving Lola into his home is his first line of offense but when Lola charms and falls for Santiago’s only daughter, our hero finds himself falling for the woman as well. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Lola and Santiago, and the potential fall-out when Lola’s secrets reveals a connection to the man in charge.

The world building is complex. We are up close and personal with Lola’s past, her ability to heal when others cannot, and her love for a young child whose own past is dark and lonely. Santiago Hernandez’ reputation precedes his introduction to our story line heroine but Lola refuses to acknowledge any connection or the truth about her past.

The relationship between Lola and Santiago begins as jailer and captive. Santiago’s men have no idea why he has saved the life of the only witness but as the story line develops, there is something more about Lola that Santiago cannot ignore. The $ex scenes are intimate and provocative.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, energetic and interesting characters including her best friend Sabrina; Santiago’s six year old daughter Alma; his right men Nando, Gordo, Luis,Diego, Miguel: CIA agent Juarez; crime boss Hidalgo Carrera and Santiago’s ex Keyna. I am hoping the author has future story plans for Sabrina, Nando, Gordo and Alma.

WHEN LIES UNFOLD is a story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, secrets and lies, abuse and survival, acceptance and love. The premise is dark, gritty and dramatic; the romance is provocative; the characters are broken, dynamic and determined.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 21, 2024

She’s the quiet, small town girl who gets along with everyone. Except him.

He’s the new guy in town who’s determined to turn her world upside down.

All Chloe Donovan ever wanted was to teach kindergarten and live a simple life in Sweetbriar Ridge. Until she decides she wants more in her life. Like maybe a good man to share her quiet life. But when she meets Tanner Westyn, Sweetbriar Ridge’s biggest ego-maniac and newest kindergarten teacher, she can’t help but feel unsettled with all the new changes happening around her town. Especially the unexpected feelings Tanner sparks in her.

A former champion Alpine skier, Tanner loves competing in all aspects of his life. But with his skiing career behind him, he’s ready to tackle the next phase of his life—teaching. When he lands in Sweetbriar Ridge, a town with a brand-new ski resort, he looks forward to quiet days on the slopes. The one thing he didn’t anticipate is how much his competitive nature would rub his new neighbors and colleagues—especially Chloe—the wrong way. What started as a schoolroom challenge with Chloe quickly snowballed into something else outside the school walls.

Everything about Tanner annoyed, frustrated, and intrigued Chloe. But when their heated banter evolves into looks of longing and a connection that can’t be denied, she starts to question if they could even have a future together. But if Tanner doesn’t want to lose Chloe, he will have to accept that coming in second place means more when the person you love takes the win.

•••••

REVIEW:WANTING YOU is the third instalment in Samantha Chase’s contemporary, adult THE DONOVANS: SWEETBRIAR RIDGE romance series-a spin off from the author’s THE DONOVANS series. This is former professional skier Tanner Westyn turned teacher, and teacher Chloe Donovan’s story line. WANTING YOU can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives (Tanner and Chloe) WANTING YOU follows the building romance and relationship between our story line couple. Tanner Westyn is embarking on a new career, a primary school teacher, but never expected to find himself teaching kindergarten in Sweetbriar Ridge. Meeting fellow kindergarten teacher Chloe Donovan doesn’t start well, in fact, Chloe is put off from the very start. Chloe Donovan has been teacher of the year twice, and Chloe sees Tanner as her only competition, so much so, that her attitude towards our hero is questionable at best. Having already established herself at the school, Chloe offered Tanner some help but Tanner was willing to go it alone. Completing out of his element, Tanner struggles in the beginning but quickly discovers he is just as able as our story line heroine. What ensues is the building but sometimes acrimonious relationship between Tanner and Chloe, and the potential fall-out as Chloe struggles with Tanner’s ongoing fame and his growing popularity amongst the teachers and students, and his ability to easily fit in everywhere.

The relationship between Chloe and Tanner begins acrimoniously. From the outset, Chloe’s most is out of joint, and Tanner’s former lifestyle will become a bone of contention. Tanner Westyn is only trying to do the best for his students but Chloe’s need to outshine Tanner is threatening their growing relationship. Both are competitive but Chloe continues to struggle with jealousy and her lack of maturity is not a good look. There are no $ex scenes-everything is implied or fades to black.

Once again, there is a large ensemble cast of colorful and energetic secondary and supporting characters, most of whom are Chloe’s large extended family. We are re-introduced to Chloe’s embattled parents.

WANTING YOU is a story of family and struggling relationship, acceptance and love. The premise is endearing and sweet; the romance is subtle; the characters are dynamic but liking the heroine may take some time.

Description:
Two homicide detectives must separate the puzzling truth from a growing web of lies while investigating a murder victim’s friends and lovers in Lost Beach, Texas.

Detective Nicole Lawson is fed up with her job and nonexistent love life. Her first date in months gets cut short by an urgent call from the chief of police. A body has been discovered at Lighthouse Point, and the medical examiner finds an array of strange clues. When the death is ruled a homicide, the news quickly reverberates through Nicole’s beachside hometown.

The Lost Beach police department swings into high gear. Leading the investigation is Emmet Davis, a veteran detective who is Nicole’s fiercest rival at work and also the man she has secretly harbored feelings toward for years. With Emmet calling the shots, Nicole sets out to search for leads, starting with the enigmatic yoga instructor who first discovered the body. Nicole is certain the witness knows more than she’s revealing and may even hold the key to unlocking the case.

When another person turns up dead under suspicious circumstances, Nicole sees a bizarre pattern, but no one believes her theory. Under the gun to solve the case, Nicole must put aside her tumultuous feelings and work closely with Emmet to figure out who is targeting her beloved hometown . . . before she becomes a target herself.

Review:

Liar’s Point by Laura Griffin is the 5th book in her fantastic Texas Murder Files series; which was another exciting mystery thriller in this series. I am a huge fan of Laura Griffin, as she is one of the best at murder, mystery, thrillers, and romance suspense. Detective Nicole Lawson, our heroine, is not too happy these days, as her boyfriend, a medical examiner, is always on the job; and she is always second fiddle to Emmett Davis, her rival on cases.  Her chief sends her to Lighthouse Point, where a body was discovered in a car, in their town of Lost Beach, Texas.  Nicole interviews the woman who discovered the car, who also knows who the victim is. Emmett is given the lead on this case, with Nicole working with him.

At first, they suspect it is suicide, but the medical examiner finds a few clues, and the case is changed to homicide. Nicole is very smart, independent and has no problem speaking her thoughts. She respects Emmet, and he also respects her, but there is a layer of tension between them, as Nicole feels because she is a woman, she is never the lead.  Both Nicole and Emmett know that they each have feelings for each other, but not really allowed on the force; though as the case escalates, Emmett is determined to protect Nicole from possible danger.

The plot changes when another yoga instructor is found dead. Nicole is convinced that the instructor who found the body is a harboring secret, with a different pattern that the police team doesn’t think anything into her theory. When Nicole is hit by a car, that seemed to be aiming at her, Emmett decides to watch over her, as well as help solve the crime together.  In a short time, Nicole and Emmet succumb to their feelings, with great chemistry between them.   I also loved Nicole, who was doing an excellent job of getting clues, as she learns more during her investigations. I also loved Emmett, who knew he was falling hard for Nicole, and was determined to protect her.

What follows is an exciting, intriguing, suspenseful thriller that kept me on the edge throughout, especially as we raced to the climax. The last half of the book was extremely tense, I could not put the book down.

Liar’s Point was another excellent mystery in this series, which to no surprise, was very well written by Laura Griffin. The last half of the book was very exciting, as Nicole while unable to move around, discovers clues that will lead to the truths revealed by the yoga instructor, and the real murderer.

Laura Griffin once again, gives us a fantastic exciting suspenseful mystery, with a great romantic couple and wonderful secondary characters. If you enjoy murder mysteries, police procedurals, lots of intense action, suspense, with a touch of romance, you should read this book.  If you have never read Laura Griffin, it’s time to start now, as she is an amazing writer for romance suspense.

                 LIAR’S POINT by Laura Griffin
Berkley Paperback | On sale May 21, 2024
                                      Excerpt

Nicole Lawson felt naked.

It wasn’t the minidress or the strappy sandals. It wasn’t even the weird slit that left the entire side of her thigh on display.

It was the Smith & Wesson .40 caliber pistol-or absence of it-that was making her feel exposed. She was so accustomed to those twenty-nine ounces riding on her hip, and the lack of weight was making her antsy as hell.

She checked her phone, then flipped it over.

Nicole glanced around the restaurant, which was wall-to-wall couples, of course. She’d never been in here before, and the decorations grated on her nerves. They were going for elegant, she knew-this was the Nautilus, after all-and it wasn’t like the place was covered in pink balloons. The bloodred rosebuds on every table looked nice, actually. Ditto for the votive candles that emitted a soft glow. Really, it was the glitter that was giving her hives, all those tiny gold hearts sprinkled across her table like pixie dust. Just the sight was making her feel even stupider than she already did in this ridiculous dress.

She checked her phone again.

For the first time ever she had a date on Valentine’s, and not just any date. Tonight was the date. She and David had gone out three times already. The last time had ended with intense kissing in his car, which definitely would have continued if he hadn’t been called into work. Nothing like being summoned to an autopsy to kill the mood.

He wanted to make it up to her, though. Those were his exact words when he’d invited her to this expensive restaurant. And so Nicole had squeezed herself into a low-cut black dress that gave her the illusion of boobs, borrowed her sister’s stilettos, and come here to meet him for dinner.

“Are we still waiting?”

Her server was back again with that pitying look that was almost as annoying as the glitter.

She smiled up at him. “We are.”

“And would you like some wine, perhaps? Maybe a cocktail?”

“I’m good.” She nodded at her half-finished water. “Thanks.”

He walked off, leaving her to her silent phone. No text, no voice message. She’d even checked her email, but zip.

Nicole looked around, sure people were staring at her. God, the white-haired couple behind her was already paying their bill.

Her phone vibrated on the table, and she snatched it up.

“Hello?”

“Where the hell are you?”

Not David. She closed her eyes.

“I’m out. Why?”

“Didn’t you get the call?” Emmet asked her, and she pictured him at the police station surrounded by the typical Saturday-night chaos.

“I’m off tonight.”

“Not anymore.”

Her phone beeped with an incoming call, and she checked the screen.

“Listen, that’s Denise. I have to go.” Nicole got off with Emmet and took the call.

“Hey, what’s up?”

“The chief asked me to reach you. He needs you at a scene.”

Damn it.

Nicole pushed her chair back and grabbed her purse. “Does he know I’m off tonight?”

“Yep.”

She unzipped her little black clutch and left a ten on the table. They were going to have to bus it, even though she hadn’t ordered anything.

“Well, what’s going on?”

“One sec,” Denise said, and cut over to another call. When things were busy, the Lost Beach PD receptionist doubled as a dispatcher. She was also the chief’s right hand, doing everything from managing his calendar to deflecting reporters who called in from time to time.

The front of the restaurant was packed with waiting couples. Nicole scanned the bar and the area around the hostess stand but didn’t see any tall, handsome doctors looking around for their date. It was 7:32. She’d officially been stood up.

“Nicole?”

“I’m here.” She squeezed past the people and pushed open the door. A cold gust hit her, and she stepped back.

“He needs you at Lighthouse Point right away. And keep it off the radio.”

“What’s going on?” she asked again.

“I’m not sure.”

“Well, what did he say?”

“He said, ‘I need Lawson at Lighthouse Point ASAP. Keep it off the radio.’ That’s all I have.”

Nicole hunched her head down, wishing for her leather jacket as she strode across the parking lot. It had filled in since she’d arrived.

“What’s your ETA?” Denise asked.

“I’ll be there in five.”

“Roger that.”

REVIEW:ACQUISITION is the second instalment in Nana Malone’s contemporary, adult KINGS OF THE BOARDROOM erotic, romance suspense series focusing on billionaire businessman Atticus Price, and algorithm developer Gwen Becker. ACQUISITION should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the cliff hanger and events of book one TAKEOVER.

NOTE: For fans of Nana Malone there are a number of crossovers and characters from the author’s See No Evil, Speak No Evil, Hear No Evil interconnected trilogies. If you have not read TAKEOVER, there may be spoilers in my review.

SOME BACKGROUND: The Becks Corporation is struggling and in an effort to bump up the bottom line, James Becker offers up a deal to the highest bidder, a deal including marriage to one of his daughters. Atticus Price wants what the Becks Corporation has to offer .When Atticus discovers the deal comes with an arranged marriage, Atticus pushes to come out on top but the daughter offered is not the daughter he wants. Enter Gwen Becker, the woman with whom Atticus will fall in love

Told from dual first person perspectives (Atticus and Gwen) ACQUISITION picks up immediately after the events and cliff hanger of book one TAKEOVER. Gwen Becker has been spiralling since Atticus Price broke off their engagement, and kicked our heroine out of his life. Now working in London, Gwen will come face to face with the man who broke her heart but all is not as it appears to be, and Gwen will be targeted by the man at the top. Several attempts on Gwen’s life finds Atticus both guardian and protector of the woman he loves but someone is determined to take down our story line heroine.

The world building continues to focus on the tempestuous relationship between our story line couple, and the ongoing dysfunctional dynamics of two families whose lives have been upended by one of their own.

The relationship between Gwen and Atticus is a roller coaster of secrets and lies. Gwen’s life is in danger but our heroine is often TSTL demanding her independence, often times placing herself in the direct line of fire. Atticus continues to struggles between wanting to protect Gwen at all costs, and destroying the man who is taking aim at our story line couple. The love scenes are provocative and intense but, once again, I dislike the use of a certain four letter word, although only used once, more for shock than anything else.

We are reintroduced to Gwen’s sister Morgan, and their questionable father James Becker; Atticus’ brother Micah, their mother Jessica, Atticus’ driver Gavin, as well as Gwen’s best friend Lance Lakewood. The requisite evil is someone familiar.

ACQUISITION is a story of power and control, secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, greed and jealousy, family and friendships, forgiveness and love. The character driven premise is dramatic, gritty and twisted; the romance is fated and seductive; the characters are animated and dynamic. ACQUISITION ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

USA Today bestseller Nana Malone’s love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense she “borrowed” from her cousin.

It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a precocious thirteen. She’s been in love with kick butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination, and channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters.

While she waits for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, in the meantime Nana works out her drama, passion, and sass with fictional characters every bit as sassy and kick butt as she thinks she is.

Unable to comprehend their father’s mindset, brothers Ted and John struggle with their father’s choices including his marriage to fifth wife Serena, whose infidelities are matched only by her soon to be ex-husband Richard’s affair but a family retreat at a luxurious Laguna Beach resort during a firestorm and the Santa Ana winds brings forth the ultimate betrayal when not one but two Kingsley family members are murdered, and promises of retribution are directed to those now controlling the top but someone else is waiting behind the scenes to assume control, someone no one ever saw coming.

Once again, UNDER THE PALMS like book one BENEATH THE SURFACE is deeply reminiscent of televisions’ SUCCESSION™ and the questionable lives and reputation of the Roy family. From betrayal and vengeance to the behind the scenes manipulation of the board members, to the sons and daughters who have set into motion their own plans to assume the position at the top. Bargains are made; blackmail is a constant; infidelity, secrets, lies and murder are just the beginning of a power struggle for control. A fixer is hired to bury the dead and their secrets but the family will be outsmarted in their battle to remain at the top.

UNDER THE PALMS is a story of secrets and lies, power and control, betrayal and vengeance, dysfunctional family dynamics, murder, chaos, manipulation and madness. The premise is dramatic, intense and dark; the characters are one again pathological, disturbing, and deadly. UNDER THE PALMS ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

OC Scoop
Attention, Kingsley fans: your favorite family is back in the limelight! That’s right—hot off the presses in this month’s issue of Vanity Fair is a four-page spread featuring the fabulous new president of Kingsley Global Enterprises, the OC’s very own Paige Kingsley. We all remember how Richard Kingsley shocked the world when he named his daughter-in-law of twenty years as his successor, bypassing his sons and heirs to hand Paige the keys to their billion-dollar kingdom. Admit it, dear readers, we all raised a brow (as much as Botox permitted, of course) at the notion of the tennis-playing stay-at-home mom better known as Mrs. Ted Kingsley suddenly holding the reins of a Fortune 100 company . . . But could it be that Perfect Paige is something of a dark horse? In a few short months, she’s made good on her promise to usher the company into a new era of philanthropy—guess all that time volunteering as CEO of the Orange County food bank taught her a thing or two about giving to those less fortunate. (And let’s face it, who isn’t less fortunate than the Kingsleys?)
This charitable spirit is certainly a new look for Kingsley Global, and those of us who worshipped at the altar of King Richard can hardly be blamed for wondering what the diehard capitalist thinks of this bold new direction. Is he proud of his protégée, or does he privately wish he could turn the page on Paige? And what about Ted, the golden child of the Kingsley clan, who was rumored to be Richard’s first choice to helm the company before Paige got the gig? He plays the part of the doting husband in public, but one can’t help but wonder how Ted feels about his wife sitting in the office he thought would be his.
Then again, maybe Ted’s just happy that Paige is still alive, unlike his sister-in-law. Older brother John’s wife, Rachel, as you’ll recall, died tragically during a weekend mega-yacht trip to Catalina Island, à la Natalie Wood. They say she fell overboard during the storm, poor thing. A chilling death, really. And a good reminder to always wear one’s life preserver while aboard one’s yacht.
Of course, John’s marriage wasn’t the only one to end abruptly that fateful weekend. It’s no secret that Richard’s fifth wife, Serena, absconded to Italy with her Italian lover and baby daddy shortly after their return to shore. Nubile young bachelorettes around the world are no doubt bidding her a buon vioggio as they daydream about becoming the sixth Mrs. Kingsley. We hope for Richard’s sake that he finds a more faithful signorina this time around!
Speaking of signorinas, we hear Richard’s wayward daughter, Sibley, also ditched her boyfriend after that weekend on the yacht. And good riddance. Colson was hardly appropriate marriage material for the Kingsleys’ only princess, in this reporter’s humble opinion. Then again, perhaps that’s why Sibley dated him in the first place. The rebellious youngest Kingsley does seem to have a knack for making choices Daddy Dearest disapproves of. Which might explain why she’s currently hanging out in Florida with her uncle Walter, Richard’s estranged brother. Nobody seems to know quite what the two black sheep of the Kingsley clan are up to in the Sunshine State—but we do know that where Sibley goes, drama follows. We await her next scandal with bated breath.
Oh, who are we kidding—we await news of all the Kingsleys with bated breath. They are, after all, the family we love to hate and hate to love. Let’s hope they never change.Richard Kingsley, CEO, and Paige Kingsley, President,

FRIDAY
Paige
They say it’s always the husband—and in my case, that’s the truth. Well, to be clear, it’s always my estranged husband, Ted. I remind myself I’ve found a good divorce attorney and take a deep, cleansing breath.
Through the floor-to-ceiling glass walls of my office, I see him, pacing back and forth, today’s ridiculous gift in hand, trying to get my attention. It’s childish, this behavior. Unoriginal. This is an every-morning performance: sometimes he brings doughnuts; other times, flowers, or a single sparkling water tied with a pink silk bow. He keeps making these offerings, I suppose expecting a different response from me. Or maybe it’s all for show, for his family, for his ego.
I pick up my phone, pretend to be on a call, and wave him away with the flick of my hand. I shouldn’t be surprised he has betrayed me again. Fool me once, and all that. But this time it’s business. I’m not sad. No—this time, finally, I’m angry. For so many years, I looked at his handsome face and couldn’t believe he was mine. The first word that came to my mind those days was love. Now the only word I have for him is betrayal. Oh, and the phrase I’m filing for divorce.
I know I need to talk to Richard, my father-in-law and boss, and tell him what I discovered and why I’m ending it with Ted. I spent the morning reading and rereading the letter from the city; the attached legal notices all amount to a big stop sign for the largest project Kingsley Global Enterprises has ever greenlit. The first big land deal I approved as president. All based on Ted’s insistence it was a clean deal that would mean everything for Kingsley’s future. Because of this deal, Ted has driven a huge wedge of doubt into Richard’s opinion of me, after I’ve worked so hard to turn things around at the company.
I know the employees have begun to see me as an effective leader. While I’ve been winning them over slowly, Richard’s admiration has been slipping away quickly. It’s the look in his piercing blue eyes, the downturn of his lip. He’s disappointed in me, and I have no idea why. Could it be he’s jealous of me? Of the fact the staff seems to like me? My eight months on the job have been marked by Kingsley Global Enterprises’ reemergence into the community as a philanthropic force. A community-spirited company gains a certain type of protection from enemies, especially if ugly secrets are unearthed. And besides, I enjoy doing good in the community, and this company can certainly afford it. I could attend a fancy charity event every weekend evening if I choose to, and we have been equally well received by the media, too, touting fresh female leadership at one of Orange County’s most powerful companies.
There’s a knock on my door, and before I can say anything, Justin pops his head in.
“Hey, here’s today’s offering,” he says with a crooked grin. Justin is my assistant—a dashing, too-good-looking, dimple-sporting man who is ten years younger than me. When Richard hired him six months ago, I was wary; he was too good to be true. Maybe he still is, but I’m embarrassed to say I enjoy every moment in his presence.
I stand up and walk over to his side. “What is it today?” I hold out my hand, and he drops a red silk bag into it.
“I’m guessing jewelry. He hasn’t done that lately.” Justin grins again, pushing a hand through his dark, thick hair. He’s distractingly cute.
I open the pouch, and sure enough, it’s a heart encrusted with pavé diamonds on a gold necklace. I drop it back into the pouch, trying to decide which of my twin daughters will get this latest gift. I roll my eyes.
Justin smiles at my reaction. “Are you all set for the retreat? Need anything else from me? If not, I’m going to head on over to the resort, get you checked in, and walk the space once more.”
“I think I’m set. I just feel like I need to speak to Richard before I head over. Is he here? Can you try to get me a meeting?” I ask.
“Sure, let me go find out,” Justin says. He touches my shoulder, and a tingle zips down my spine. “You know, he’ll be at the retreat. He promised to attend. You could speak to him there.”
“I know. I just want to get ahead of this land deal story. The reporter is running it tomorrow.”
“It’s not your deal, Paige. It was Ted’s. Everyone knows that,” Justin assures me. “I’ll go find out if Richard has time to talk.”
“Thank you,” I say, closing the door behind him. Yes, it was Ted’s land deal. Yes, his brother, John, agreed it was a great deal. But Richard said I had to make the final decision.
I believed Ted. Again. After everything he’s done. After all his lies, his cheating, his gambling, his dalliance—or whatever it was—with his own stepmother. John assured me he’d looked at the numbers, and Ted promised he’d looked at all the land-use issues. Even Richard said the deal looked doable, but he left the ultimate decision up to me. I knew in my heart Ted was a liar. I never should have approved the deal. If I’m not careful, this will give Richard the ammunition he needs to get rid of me, replace me with someone else.
Sometimes, I think he wants to push me aside—I do. But other days, he seems . . . well, like the old grumpy Richard who is fond of me and likes having me around as president. You just never know where you stand with the Kingsley men. That’s why, from now on, I will stand on my own two feet. I’m stronger now. A role model for my daughters, who are working here this summer. Hear me roar. And I’m not going to allow any of them to walk all over me again.
Particularly—and especially—not Ted.
Justin’s back. “He’s already left for the resort. I’ll head over, tell him you would like a meeting before the retreat starts. Don’t look so worried. Everything’s fine.”
I shake my head. “I’m well aware this weekend will be a lot like herding cats, but I must make my mark. I have a lot to prove here. You know that.”
“You do, and you are. Remember, when I first started here—working with you—I honestly didn’t think you would make it.”
He’s told me this before, but it stings every time. “I know. I seemed too nice.” I take a deep breath and walk over to my desk.
“Yep. And maybe easy to manipulate, for some people,” he says. “But the truth is, you’re tough and smart. So pack up your things, and I’ll see you over there. It’s a gorgeous day. Santa Ana winds are predicted tomorrow and Sunday, unfortunately.”
“I didn’t know that,” I tell him, filling my briefcase with my computer, extra phone, and all the charging cables life requires these days. “I hope they aren’t too strong.” Those winds put everyone on edge. The air changes, people’s moods shift. It’s dry—and itchy. Really unsettling.
Justin sighs. “Well, it is what it is. At least it’s warm and sunny, even with the winds.”
I don’t make eye contact. I remember the wind-driven fires in Laguna Beach, the roaring red flames of destruction above us on the hill, the ash swirling, choking the air. Our frantic evacuation. I shake my head, try to force the memories away.
The winds are not what we need this weekend. The winds remind you of how tentative everything is and how fast it can all be lost.

The auction was an opportunity of a lifetime…or so I thought.

The highest bidder would get one night with me.

I’ve slept with plenty of bad dates for free, why not make it worth my while?

Little do I know that the man who buys me is my worst enemy.

Anderson West is arrogant, obnoxious, but also incredibly easy on the eyes. He was my biggest bully growing up, and my primary rival at law school. He hates everything about me and will stop at nothing to make my life miserable.

What happens when I find out he’s the highest bidder when I’m naked in bed waiting for him?
