Description:
The woman panics as the thick smoke starts to curl under the locked door. She can’t breathe and desperately tries to open the window, but it’s been sealed shut. Falling to the floor, she finally accepts there’s no way out of this room alive. And as her vision starts to fade, she prays she dies before the flames find her.

When human remains are discovered behind a dumpster in Woodbridge, Virginia, Detective Amanda Steele rushes to the scene. Her heart drops when she arrives and is hit by the unmistakable stench of gasoline. Soon, her worst fear is the victim was burned alive.

With only an engraved gold wedding band surviving the blaze, Amanda knows it could be days before they have a confirmed ID. But when her partner Detective Trent Stenson arrives, he pales at the sight of the ring, recognizing it as belonging to his Aunt Gertrude’s husband, Don.

Trent is convinced his aunt isn’t involved, but as more is unearthed about her troubled relationship with her husband, and she fails to provide an alibi, Amanda isn’t so sure. Desperate to prove his aunt’s innocence, Trent soon discovers someone from Don’s past is back in Woodbridge—someone who wants revenge. But Amanda and Trent are shaken to their core when that person is discovered brutally murdered.

Convinced the cases are linked, Amanda knows she has to find the cold-blooded killer before they strike again. And as Trent becomes even more emotionally entangled in the case, she’s terrified he could become the next victim…

Review:

The Wildfire Girl by Carolyn Arnold is the 11th book in her wonderful Detective Amanda Steele series. I am a big fan of Arnold, having read most of her books, and I love this series, which continues with another great addition.  Amanda Steele, our heroine, is a homicide detective in Dumfries, Virginia Police Department. Amanda and her partner, Trent are called to the scene of a violet murder, as a man was burned to his death. Upon arrival, Amanda is hit with a terrible stench of gasoline, with the knowledge that the victim was burned alive.  Trent reveals to Amanda that he recognizes the victim’s wedding ring, which belongs to his Aunt Gertrudes abusive husband, Don.

Despite his believe that his aunt isn’t involved, more clues do point at the aunt being the possible perpetrator, especially with her not revealing a few lies, such as being in the vicinity at the time of her husband’s death. Amanda worries that Trent isn’t being objective.  Another woman is found murdered, and Amanda and Trent learn that the woman who was stabbed is someone from the husband’s past, whom he brutally abused, causing severe burns on the woman’s face years ago. Was this woman out for revenge, and did Don kill her before he was killed?

Amanda and Trent are a great team, and I like them together. Amanda is a great detective, very strong, independent, and always able to solve any case. Amanda has an adoptive daughter, who she worries about a lot, because of her always busy on a case.  She seems happy with Logan, who always watches over Zoe.

What follows is an exciting, suspenseful, intriguing, tense mystery, that kept me unable to put the book down, as this was a fantastic thriller. From the start, you become engrossed into the story, as Trent was determined to prove his aunt’s innocence, and Amanda doing her best to protect him from being too involved. The storyline was very interesting, especially the abuse by the victim against his wife, and former woman of the past. To say too much more would be spoilers.

The Wildfire Girl was a fantastic crime thriller, that was another gripping addition to the Detective Amanda Steele series. It was a compelling intricate suspenseful plot, excellent police procedural, great characters, edge of your seat thriller, with some surprises at the end.  The Wildfire Girl was once again so very well written by Carolyn Arnold, which is the norm for this author; as I am loving this series. If you like mystery thrillers, police procedural, then you need to be reading this series.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 18, 2024

I’m scared.
When will this nightmare end?

Darkness and cold has tortured me.
I can’t remember anything.

He’s coming.
His footsteps echo like a wrecking ball in my head.

He’s getting closer.
Breathe.

He’s almost here.
I must escape.

He’s here.
Breath tickles my face.

With what little strength I have, I find my way to the sunlight.

Tortured moans become more distant.
Run faster.

I drop with exhaustion.
Did I make it far enough?

I’m being lifted.
Warmth engulfs me.

Please let this be my savior and not my captor.

REVIEW: AMNESIA by Kelly Elliott writing as Ellie Grace is a contemporary, adult , stand alone, thriller focusing on twenty-seven year old Mallory Wilson, and rancher Liam Sanders.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspective (Liam and Mallory) AMNESIA follows in the wake of the abduction and captivity of our story line heroine. Approximately one month earlier, Mallory Wilson sold her house, and placed everything into storage, and headed to Chicago in the hopes of a new future. Several days later Mallory was living a nightmare-a captive of a madman who had plans for our story line heroine . Having escaped, and on the run, Mallory would be rescued by rancher Liam Sanders, and man whose own past may be running parallel to the horror of Mallory’s life. Without any memory of what happened or why, Mallory would struggle to remember, as the memories begin to reveal a little at a time. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Mallory and Liam, as they navigate a potential betrayal.

The world building focuses on the search for a kidnapped, a possible killer, and the connections to our story line couple. Mallory and Liam never met prior to Mallory’s rescue and recovery but their attraction is immediate.

The relationship between Mallory and Liam begins as a rescue. Mallory’s escape culminates in the building romance between our story line couple, as Liam relives the heart break from his past. There are no $ex scenes, everything is implied.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and questionable secondary and supporting characters including family, friends, law enforcement and ranch hands.

AMNESIA is a story of madness, murder, obsession and betrayal, secrets and lies, power and control. The premise is intriguing and intense; the romance is subtle and fated; the characters are desperate and animated.

Honey Cut (Lyonesse 2) by Sierra Simone-review tour

Honey Cut (Lyonesse 2) by Sierra Simone-review tour

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 18, 2024

I have one job in this arranged marriage, and that’sto seduce my husband.

It should be easy; I’m the heiress to a transatlantic fortune, bred and raised to make a good match. I’ve spent a lifetime building up my endurance, my discipline, my dedication to my god and my church. The danger lies in falling for the devil who put his ring on my finger—a mistake I made years ago, and can’t afford to make again.

There is one more danger: handsome and green-eyed, emotionally wounded. Tristan Thomas, former soldier and my new husband’s bodyguard. A hero who stole my heart with salt-soaked kisses on the sea.

But Lyonesse is not like other places, and this isn’t like other marriages. Soon Tristan, Mark, and I are tangled in a knot of vicious jealousy and gorgeous wickedness, where suspicion is an aphrodisiac and secrets and vows are one and the same.

And there is something far darker at play than my real purpose, than the machinations of the Church I serve. Darker even than the twisted longings of my own heart. Because my husband has secrets of his own, and the reason he’ll stop at nothing to possess me could slice my soul deeper than the honeysuckle-hilted knife he gave me once upon a time.

Because when it comes to Mark Trevena and his games, the first cut is more than the deepest—it’s the sweetest.

And he always leaves you begging for more…

•••••

REVIEW:Honey Cut is book two in the Lyonesse series by the ever spicy Sierra Simone. I don’t even know where to start with this book, the lies, the pain, the mistakes and regret, all there front and center for everyone to experience. Book one in this trilogy is a MUST read!

Tristan, Mark and Isolde are back again in the continuation of book one, and Lord almighty, I was not prepared, there was no getting prepared, or being prepared, it was simply..raw. Tristan and Isolde, fall deeper in love as the book progresses all while trying to hide those same feelings, and then there is their attraction and chemistry with Mark. The quiet, always brooding, sullen Mark, both drawing them together and keeping them apart all at the same time.

HC is most definitely a slow burn, but have mercy Ms. Author, the spicy bits in the book need to come with their own warnings, hot and heavy don’t even cover it. There is so much to unpack in this second book, and more so makes me want Mark’s POV and how his mind works. There are parts to the plot that I am still a little confused on, and others I can’t wait to see how they work out. Of course the Queen Devil herself had to go and end it the way she did, I think she likes to torture us just a little, keeps the readers coming back for more that is sure.

One Star Romance by Laura Hankin – Review & Giveaway

One Star Romance by Laura Hankin – Review & Giveaway

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Bookbub

Description:
Natalie and Rob couldn’t have less in common. Nat’s a messy artist, and Rob’s a rigid academic. The only thing they share is their devotion to their respective best friends—who just got engaged. Still, unexpected chemistry has Natalie cautiously optimistic about being maid of honor to Rob’s best man.

Until, minutes before the ceremony, Nat learns that Rob wrote a one-star review of her new novel, which has them both reeling: Nat from imposter syndrome, and Rob over the reason he needed to write it.

When the reception ends, these two opposites hope they’ll never meet again. But, as they slip from their twenties into their thirties, they’re forced together whenever their fast-track best friends celebrate another milestone. Through housewarmings and christenings, life-changing triumphs and failures, Natalie and Rob grapple with their own choices—and how your harshest critic can become your perfectly imperfect match.

After all, even the truest love stories sometimes need a bit of rewriting.

Review:

One Star Romance by Laura Hankin is a standalone enemy to lovers rom-com novel. The story focuses mostly on Natalie, who has just published her first book; she lives with her bff, Gabby.  Natalie meets Rob, who happens to be Angus, bff; and during a party, where Angus asks Gabby to marry him. Natalie learns that one person gave her book 1 star, and after a bit of investigation, she realizes that Rob was the one who gave her the 1 star.  From that moment on, both of them got off on the wrong foot, and as the years passed, both Natalie and Rob, only saw each other only due to their respective best friends.

At times they were forced to be together, such as when Gabby and Angus got married, Rob was the best man and Natlie was the maid of honor. Throughout the passing years, they met at their friend’s parties, housewarming, birth of baby, life changing or another milestone; as both of them dealed with their own life and ambitions.

This was a slow burn romance, with years having passed, and a tragedy will bring both Natalie and Rob together.  The friendship between the foursome (Gabby, Angus, Natalie, Rob), as well as other secondary character was lots of fun, and wonderful to get to know them over time. It was very well done, as we got to see the journey between the four of them during that period.  I got a kick out of Christina (Gabby/Angus) daughter. I did like some other secondary characters that played a nice part in this book. I did in time enjoy the love-hate relationship between Rob and Natalie.

One Star Romance is a fun story that focuses on friendship, romance, growth and humor over a number of years. It is a charming, witty, fun story that seamlessly combines life’s complexities and growth, as we change over a period of time.  If you enjoy slow burn romances, with lots of humor; you should read One Star Romance, with was very well written by Laura Hankin.

Winter Lost by Patricia Briggs – Review & Giveaway

Winter Lost by Patricia Briggs – Review & Giveaway

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Bookbub

Description:
In the supernatural realms, there are creatures who belong to winter. I am not one of them. But like the coyote I can become at will, I am adaptable.

My name is Mercy Thompson Hauptman, and my mate, Adam, is the werewolf who leads the Columbia Basin Pack, the pack charged with keeping the people who live and work in the Tri-Cities of Washington State safe. It’s a hard job, and it doesn’t leave much room for side quests. Which is why when I needed to travel to Montana to help my brother, I intended to go by myself.

But I’m not alone anymore.

Together, Adam and I find ourselves trapped with strangers in a lodge in the heart of the wilderness, in the teeth of a storm of legendary power, only to discover my brother’s issues are a tiny part of a problem much bigger than we could have imagined. Arcane and ancient magics are at work that could, unless we are very careful, bring about the end of the world.

Review:

Winter Lost by Patricia Briggs is the 14th book in her wonderful Mercy Thompson series. I am a big fan of this series, and its heroine, Mercy Thompson.  It is always fun to spend time with Mercy and Adam, and their pack. Refresher:  Mercy has always been independent, and she continues to surprise many as she always manages to find a way to outsmart her enemies, who constantly underestimate her.  Mercy is strong, savvy, smart and a coyote shifter, but it is her love for Adam that makes her very loyal to the pack also; she will do anything to protect those she loves.

Winter Lost picks up not too far when the last book ended, with Mercy still feeling the effects of what the Soul Taker did to her. She still hides some of the symptoms left over, but those close to her still try to find a way to heal her. When her brother Gary shows up, they discover he has been cursed. The local frost giant Ymir is called in to find out why Gary was cursed, but he tells them his other brother, Hrimnir created the curse. Mercy and Adam embark on a journey to Montana to find the person behind the curse, to help her brother.

When they meet Hrimnir, he explains that Gary had stolen an important artifact; in retaliation, he has brought a major blizzard to the hotel, where a wedding will take place.  No one can leave the resort until the artifact is returned, or all will die.  Mercy and Adam go to stay at the hotel and try to find the artifact; while there they meet a host of supernatural beings, such as fae, vampires, wolves, etc. We also learn about the myths and traditions, such as the wedding, as well as end of the world threats.  I did like some new characters, such as Liam (Fae), and Grandmother Spider, who was a great addition, with her magical abilities.

What follows is an exciting, non-stop, tense, action packed adventure that captivated me from start to finish.   Winter Lost was a tense, exciting, wild, pulse pounding climax. To tell too much more would be spoilers, which would ruin the story.

Winter Lost was a page turner, and so very well written by Briggs, with so much action throughout. I loved every moment of it.  I love Adam and Mercy together, as they have a wonderful bond.  This is a fabulous series.  If you have not read the Mercy Thompson series, and love paranormal, shifters, wolves; it is time to start reading this series.

They’ve been trying to avoid each other.
But this town has other ideas…

When Berkley Carr opened The Love Shack Animal Haven, she thought she’d finally put her past behind her. But sometimes she feels the sting of the scandal from her youth, especially when she keeps crossing paths with her handsome neighbor. So, she keeps her head down and pours all her love into caring for animals.

Lawson Salder moved to Cemetery, Indiana, to escape from the grinding poverty of his childhood. He barely knew Berkley from their old neighborhood, but every time he sees her, the shame and pain come crashing back. He knows she’s got major baggage of her own. They’re better off just avoiding each other.

But that’s downright impossible in a town full of matchmaking busybodies. Then there’s the hard-to-ignore attraction they feel every time they see each other. When the universe is conspiring to bring them together, will Berkley and Lawson let past hurts go and embrace the love they deserve?

••••••

REVIEW:THE LOVE SHACK is the third instalment in Lori Foster’s contemporary, adult INDIANA SUMMERS romance series focusing on the people of Cemetery Indiana. This is animal shelter owner Berkley Carr, and tradesman Lawson Salder’s storyline, as well as the building relationship between business owner Oliver Roth, and hair stylist Lark Penny. THE LOVE SHACK can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from several omniscient third person perspectives THE LOVE SHACK follows two building romance relationships. Berkley Carr escaped her past, and settled in Cemetery Indiana, where no body knew about what happened years before but Berkley never expected to come face to face with Lawson Salder, the man with whom Berkley would fall in love but a man who knew what happened back home. Lawson Salder’s escape to Cemetery came with demons from his past, and together he and Berkley would begin a new life, that is, until Berkley’s past returns demanding a second chance.

Meanwhile business owner Oliver Roth is considering settling in Cemetery Indiana, having walked away from the questionable actions of his immediate family. Tired of the destructive nature of his brother, Oliver set up shop in a town that protected their own, a town where he would meet his future in the guise of Lark Penny, a woman with secrets of her own.

The world building follows several paths, two new relationships, new business ownerships, a mannequin whose ability to appear is just creepy enough to scare newcomers to town, and town matriarch Betty Cemetery who is feisty as a rabid dog when someone takes aim at the people she loves.

THE LOVE SHACK is a story of family and friendships, relationships and love with small town energy; the protective nature of a close knit family, and a little bit of romance to spice up the lonely nights. The premise is entertaining; the romance is passionate but mostly implied -there are no $ex scenes; the characters are dynamic and energetic.

As Maria, she must resist falling for Tomas, who is doing his best to change her mind about love and relationships. Her two lives are on a head-on collision course and Maria doesn’t know if she’ll come out alive or with her heart intact.

•••••

REVIEW: MASKS by Sydney Ashcroft is a stand alone, contemporary, adult, slightly paranormal romance story line focusing on twenty-five year old business woman Maria Grayson, and Brazilian security specialist Tomas Dorrance.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise including violence, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives (Tomas and Maria) MASKS focuses on the double lives of our story line couple. Maria Grayson is a business woman by day but a supernatural crime fighter by night named Balestra, a crime fighter whose ‘costume’ and ‘mask’ hides her true identity but with the uptick in a new designer street drug, comes a stranger, another crime fighter who is determined to help ‘Balestra’ in her nightly take downs, help Balestra does not want. Meanwhile, as Maria Grayson, our heroine doesn’t do relationships but the arrival of a security specialist Tomas Dorrance pulls Maria into a relationship from which she may never recover when her nightly excursions begin to point the finger at someone she knows. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Maria and Tomas, and the potential fall-out as Maria is willing to walk away when the truth, identities and reality are revealed.

The world building is limited in such a way that it is never revealed as to the nature of the heroine’s enhanced abilities yet the crime fighting ‘costumed’ hero is a familial legacy passed on from generation to generation. Very little is known to the reader; the inherent gifts and traditions are just there but never revealed, and in this I was somewhat confused and lost as to the precipitating factors of the who, what and why.

The relationship between Maria and Tomas begins as a ‘friends with benefits’ as Maria doesn’t do relationships, and refuses to accept more than one-night together. Tomas is persistent in his desire for our story line heroine but secrets revealed threaten the growing love between our story line couple. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Maria’s PA and friend Gayle, as well as Maria’s extended family: grandfather Wayne Grayson; her father Rickard Grayson, and mother Helen Martinelli, as well as Tomas’ sister Caroline, and their father Antonio Dorrance. The requisite evil has many faces.

MASKS is a story of betrayal and vengeance, power and control, secrets and lies, family, forgiveness, acceptance and love. The premise is intriguing but left too many questions; the romance is intense but I didn’t feel any palpable attraction; the characters are energetic and dynamic. The story is left open-ended, perhaps the author has plans for something more.
