Description:
Everything that was lost will be found again.

Jubilee PD Officer Wiley Pope thinks he’s ruined things with Linette Elgin. He hasn’t seen or heard from the local nurse since their date gone wrong. But when Wiley’s trip to the bank turns into a robbery with Linette as one of the hostages, his training and protective instincts kick into full gear. A heroic bullet to his armor-protected chest is enough for Linette to forgive Wiley’s past mistakes and begin anew.

While his love for Linette grows daily, Wiley finds himself in over his head when a murder investigation is linked to Pope Mountain. If that wasn’t enough, a woman from Wiley’s father’s past abandons her seven-year-old daughter at the police station in an attempted money scheme. But the minute the woman signs over her parental rights, Wiley and Linette welcome the wary little girl into their family and show her what real love looks like.

Review:

Left Behind by Sharon Sala is the 4th book in her wonderful Jubilee, Kentucky series.  The story focuses on Wiley Pope, who loves his job as a Jubilee police officer.  Wiley has a crush on Linette Elgin, who is a local hospital nurse, but after a date that ended up wrong, due to two ladies who ruined the date; Linette wanted nothing to do with Wiley.   When a robbery at the local bank occurs, Linette finds herself as one of the hostages; with Wiley one of the cops coming to the rescue. Linette sees how he protected the hostages, and sees all that he does, she relents and decides to give him a second chance.

A murder investigation begins in Pop Mountain, with a woman shot in the back. Turns out that the woman’s brother was murdered, and she was found in the mountains with a serious injury. Wiley is assigned to guard her at the hospital; and learning more about the attempt on her life.  There are bad people, who have tried to kill the women, who they fear would identify them; but friends and police are on top of things, with the woman safe.

A woman, Corina, from Wiley’s father’s past, brings her 7-year-old daughter, to the police station, in an attempt abandoned the child in a money scheme; Wiley finds himself adoring the little girl, Ava.  He makes a deal with Corina, that he will adopt her, and free Corina to her move on with her own life.  Ava, was a cute and adorable child that everyone, including all the Pope family, as well as Linette loved. Ava did have a rough life in her 7 years, and as she meets all of the Pope family, Linette, she is beside herself as now having a family that she will love.

Left Behind was an emotional, wonderful, sweet story, with all the members of the Pope family playing a big part in this story.  Wiley and Linette made a great couple.  Everyone love young Ava, and Wiley was so happy to have Linette and Ava as his family.  There were a couple of suspense mysteries that played a large part of this book.  Left Behind was very well written by Sharon Sala

Someone—or something—wants them off that lake.

••••

REVIEW:THE WOMAN BY THE LAKE is the third instalment in Kristen Ashley’s contemporary, adult MISTED PINES romantic suspense series focusing on the people of Misted Pines. This is single father and contractor Andrew ‘Doc’ Riggs, and primary school teacher Nadia Williams’ story line. THE WOMAN BY THE LAKE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary..

Told from first person perspectives (Nadia) and third person (Riggs) THE WOMAN BY THE LAKE follows Nadia Williams as she takes a leave of absence from her job, escaping the memories left behind in Chicago, Renting a cabin by the lake in Misted Pines, Nadia would come face to face with her neighbor, contractor Doc Riggs, the man with whom Nadia would fall in love but all was not well in Misted Pines, and the cabin she was renting would become the focus of ghost stories, hauntings, and a case of unsolved murders. As Nadia, Riggs, and Sheriff Harry Moran began to research the history of a family murder, Riggs would find himself embroiled in his own family squabble with the mother of his nine year old son. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Nadia and Riggs, and the potential fall-out as our couple, and the town of Misted Pines must reconsider what happened in the past and why.

The world building follows several paths; is detailed and intriguing as Misted Pines holds too many demons that have yet to let go. Add the usual small -town gossip and busybodies, as well as those who deem themselves above everyone else, and our couple must contend with secrets and gossip wherever they go.

The relationships between Nadia and Riggs begins acrimoniously as Riggs is known to throw obnoxiously loud parties. Nadia was hoping for to take time to rest, relax and reconsider her future but never expected to find herself falling for a man, and his nine year old son. The $ex scenes are passionate and intimate without the use of over the opt, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, enthusiastic and often questionable secondary and supporting characters. We are witness to the return of Cade and Delphine (The Girl in the Mist 1), Rus Lazarus (The Girl in the Woods) as well as Sheriff Harry Moran. We are introduced to Riggs’ son Ledger, as well as Rigg’s mom Gail, and friends Storm and Viggo, Bubbles and Lucille, Rigg’s questionable ex Angelina, and several local residents of Misted Pines.

THE WOMAN BY THE LAKE is a story of secrets and lies, murder and mystery, betrayal and obsession, family and friendships, relationships and love. The thought provoking premise is intriguing, haunting and dramatic; the romance is seductive and intense; the characters are stubborn, honest and charismatic

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA. She nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn’t taken her first breath!).

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana but has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

A tragic accident, loss of life, and two years of guilt find our heroine facing her past, a past that is now controlling her present. A Matter of Class by Mary Balogh – a Review

A Matter of Class by Mary Balogh – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM

Description:
Reginald Mason is wealthy, refined, and, by all accounts, a gentleman. However, he is not a gentleman by title, a factor that pains him and his father within the Regency society that upholds station over all else. That is, until an opportunity for social advancement arises, namely, Lady Annabelle Ashton. Daughter of the Earl of Havercroft, a neighbor and enemy of the Mason family, Annabelle finds herself disgraced by a scandal, one that has left her branded as damaged goods. Besmirched by shame, the earl is only too happy to marry Annabelle off to anyone willing to have her.

Though Reginald Mason, Senior, wishes to use Annabelle to propel his family up the social ladder, his son does not wish to marry her, preferring instead to live the wild, single life he is accustomed to. With this, Reginald Senior serves his son an ultimatum: marry Annabelle, or make do without family funds. Having no choice, Reginald consents, and enters into a hostile engagement in which the prospective bride and groom are openly antagonistic, each one resenting the other for their current state of affairs while their respective fathers revel in their suffering.

So begins an intoxicating tale rife with dark secrets, deception, and the trials of love—a story in which very little is as it seems.

Review:

A Matter of Class by Mary Balogh was a sweet historical standalone novel.  Reginald Mason is wealthy, refined, and, by all accounts, a gentleman. He is the son of a wealthy coal merchant, with his father not considered to be part of the regency society. Reginald has made friends in the society, using money and gambling for his fun.  Mr. Mason is not thrilled with Reginald’s constant playboy fun, and he is determined for Reginald to get married and have children. The Masons and the Ashtons have been neighbors for 20 years, but do not speak or interact in any way.

Annabelle is the daughter of nobility, well known for her incredible beauty, but after being caught running away with a carriage man, in a compromising position with all of her beaux having withdrawn their proposals, leaving her in a disgrace with no dowry available.    Upon hearing about Havercroft’s daughter’s disgrace, Mr. Mason goes to Lord Havercroft to offer a solution; he will marry his son to Annabelle, with a sizable dowry and redemption from her fall from grace.

There are a number of flashbacks, when Reggie and Anna would occasionally meet by the lake between the two homes.  It started when Anna was around 8, and the banter between them even at a young age was cute. As they get older and years pass, they would accidently see each other again; with both talking or bickering about their lives. I got a kick out of their distant entertaining friendship, that no one knew about.  I did like both mothers, who like each other, but the fathers were never willing to talk, even though they wanted Reggie and Anna to marry.   Both Reggie and Anna consent to the marriage, even if they are somewhat antagonistic to each other.  As the wedding approaching, I really did care about both of them, as they slowly learned to accept the marriage.

A Matter of Class was a very good historical story, with a wonderful couple, even though the families were distant to each other.  Reggie and Anna were great, and after the wedding, some secrets are revealed; I loved the ending.  A Matter of Class was very well written by Mary Balogh.

Emma Oxley and Nellie Yarrow have been inseparable their whole lives. Ever since they reinvented themselves, changing their names and wiping clean their digital footprints, they have made a game of following wherever the next adventure leads and challenging themselves to thefts, street cons, and mind games.

Adhering to only two rules—they will only swindle men, and only ones who deserve it—Emma and Nellie are secure in their reputation as the most trustworthy swindlers on the European black market. Until suddenly, they must play to save their own lives.

Blackmailed into stealing a priceless bracelet from a high-security exhibit, Emma will reexamine everything she believed to be true. This heist takes her far beyond her comfort zone…and she and Nellie will need allies among the glitzy bejeweled gathering in London in order to survive. Will they be able to do the right thing before it’s too late?

Review:

The Confidence Games by Tess Amy is a fun standalone novel about two best friends who are con artists. We meet Emma Oxley and Nellie Yarrow, who have been best friends forever.  When Emma lost her job, as well as her fiancée, she is despondent, but when Nellie shows up, everything is about to change.

They reinvent themselves, changing their names, and cleaning digital prints, with them becoming very successful con artists over a 5-year period; making a name for themselves in the European Black Market.  They develop many cons travelling the world, to swindle men, operating under fake personas, stealing valuable things and reselling to them to highest bidders. I really loved their wonderful inspiring friendship and how successful they were.

But when Nellie is kidnapped, Emma is forced make a plan on stealing a very expensive bracelet (worth millions), The Heart of Envy from a London high-security exhibit. The difficulty of the heist, is because of so much high-tech security, as well as people all over. Nellie is released to help Emma steal the bracelet, with death threats holding against them; they have to race against time to save their own lives. Dax is a member of their team, being a tech and hacking expert. Sophia was a young girl, who was locked up, as Nellie and Emma helped keep the girl save with Dax.  As the day arrives, and plans are put into place, they discover surprising reveals and a family that stays together to fight the battle. To say too much more would ruin it for you, and the last quarter of the books was very exciting.

I have to say I actually loved this book, as it was so much fun and very enjoyable.  I loved both Emma and Nellie, as well as Dax and Sophia.  The Confidence Games was very well written by Tess Amy, whom I have never read before but I will check out her next book.  The Confidence Games was a fun, delightful, action-filled, suspenseful, exciting story, with wonderful characters, and an amazing heist. I suggest you read this book, as it was so much fun.

•••••••

REVIEW: BRUTAL POWER is the third instalment in BB Hamel’s contemporary, adult BIANCO CRIME FAMILY erotic, Mafia romance series set in the author’s ROSSI CRIME FAMILY world. This is thirty-five year old attorney and head of the Irish Crime Family Brody Quinn, and Mafia princess Elena Bianco’s story line. BRUTAL POWER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order for backstory and cohesion.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Elena and Brody) BRUTAL POWER follows the arrange marriage between our story line couple. Brody Quinn is the new head of the Irish Crime Family, and in an effort to secure power and position, makes a deal with Don Simon Bianco, including asking for his sister’s hand in marriage. Elena and Brody have never met, and in this, another threat from within, forces a marriage within days but someone else is determined to take control, and Brody is about to place himself in the direct line of fire. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Brody and Elena, and the potential fall-out as family history and secrets threatens the Bianco family while Brody continues to work behind the scenes.

The world building follows Brody as he puts a plan into motion to take control but all is not as it appears to be, and Brody finds himself working with the Bianco’s in an effort to take control.

The relationship between Brody and Elena begins as an arranged marriage. Elena wants a marriage in name only but quickly discovers there is more to Brody than a brooding head of the Irish Mob. As their relationship continues to grow, Brody must make concessions to keep his new wife happy. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate but I dislike the use of a certain four-letter word, although only used once, it felt unnecessary.

All of the previous story line couples and family members return including Simon and Emily; Davide and Stefania, Laura, Elena, and their parents Alessandro and Freddie. We are introduced to Brody’s large extended family: Seamus, Nolan, Molly, Declan, Caitlin, and their mother Orla Quinn: crime boss Luciano Santoro, and dirty cop Luca Moretti.

BRUTAL POWER is a story of secrets and lies, twists and turns, power and control, betrayal and obsession, acceptance and love. The premise is intriguing, captivating and engaging; the romance is seductive; the characters are desperate, dynamic and powerful.

The relationship between Gwen and Sirus building towards something more. Sirus has fallen in love with a woman he believes belongs to someone else, and Gwen is determined to prove Sirus is worthy of his own happily ever after. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

WE are reintroduced to Barith (dragon), Levian (mage), Abigail (witch), and Sirus’ sister Niah. The requisite evil has many faces. Gwendolyn’s true identity will not be revealed until the end of the story.

A HEART OF ICE AND SHADOW is a story of secrets and lies, magic and obsession, acceptance and love. The slow building premise is enchanting and entertaining; the characters are magical ; the romance is subtle but impassioned.
