Sliding Home by Kathy Lyons – a Review
Amazon / B&N / Kobo / iBooks / BAM / Book Depository
Description:
Shy and reserved, good girl Ellie McDonald is determined to break out of her shell–and her relationship rut. First order of business, woman up and finally ask her longtime secret crush, Jake Armstrong on an old-fashioned date. She’s not at all his type–which is great. Once Jake turns her down she can finally move on. Except he says yes…
MVP short-stop Jake Armstrong has tried to keep his bad boy nature under wraps. But there’s nothing he likes more than tempting sweet Ellie to the dark side. No one need know.
But when the hotel catches fire and their rescue–while nearly naked–is caught on camera, the two have a PR problem. Jake’s solution is a fake relationship, just for the season. Only for Ellie, there’s nothing fake about it…
Review:
I really enjoyed Sliding Home by Kathy Lyons. It was a fun, fast and flirty read. Ms. Lyon’s stories are fun to read, with charming and interesting characters who make you want to sit back, and relax with a good glass of wine in your favourite reading area.
In Sliding Home we meet Ellie and Jake. I liked both characters from the get go. Their personalities just seemed to resonate and jump off the pages for me. They carried the story seamlessly and allowed the reader to really get to know them and get a sense of where they are coming from. There were times my heart ached for both of them and I just wanted them both to be happy and get their HEA. They do, but not without the usual drama that precedes it. Ms. Lyon’s kept the story real, with real issues and allowed the drama to unfold as it needed to unfold.
I enjoyed the pace that Ms. Lyon’s set for this adventure between Ellie and Jake and never felt like it was rushed. I liked their romance, it was sweet and charming, with just enough sexy moments to keep things interesting. I especially liked the hero scene, where Jake had to save Ellie, himself and a young boy from a burning building. It was intense and sit on the edge of your seat worthy. It made me think of the many fire-fighters movies and tv shows I’ve watched. However, my favourite moment had to be when Jake came to his senses and realized he loved her. Even though he was in pain and sick with infection from a tear in his diaphragm from his daring fire rescue, he needed to get to Ellie. I was chuckling as this scene unfolded and he gave his poor PR person a heart attack, and proceeded to threaten her that he’d search the whole hospital to find her, infection be damned. When he tosses the sheet off, jumps out of bed, tries to pull his iv out and tells his PR person she has until his fever gets to 100 degrees to have her in his room or else, I was howling with laughter. Leave it up to Jake to go all He-man on his PR person after everything she’s done for him throughout his career. It was a priceless scene, but when Ellie finally makes her way to his room and he admits his feelings, tells her he loves her, wants to marry and have babies with her it was swoon-worthy. Even though Ellie thought he was delirious from the fever, it was still swoon-worthy. It was a touching ending to a drama filled, yet sexy romantic read. Ms. Lyons has hit another one out of the ballpark with this one.
Until next time, happy reading everyone.
