Thirty Nights with a Highland Husband

Daughters of the Glen series by Melissa Mayhue,  had been recommended to me by a number of friends, and this series promises to be a light and fun read. Let us begin with the first book of the series.

Thirty Nights with a Highland Husband was an excellent relaxing read. The premise of the story started long ago, when a powerful faerie, angered at the mistreatment of his love and his daughter, forced the responsibility of care on all of their male relations with a resulting curse if they should fail, and the Legend of the Faerie Glen began.

Connor MacKiernan, a descendant of the Fae Prince, is a warrior from Scotland in the year 1272.  Connor serves his king, but he needs to protect his sister Mairi. His aunt Rosalyn comes up with the solution. She will arrange for an emerald pendant to come into the possession of one who can help. Though he’s vowed never to marry, that’s exactly what he must do to save his sister.

Caitlyn Coryell, is from the present time in 2007. Caitlyn works for her family’s security firm. She has purchased an emerald pendant at an antique store to wear for her wedding, and then finds her fiancée with another woman. While in her bedroom, alone and upset, out of nowhere Connor appears begging for her help.  She of course is in her nightgown and wearing her antique emerald pendant. He offers a simple yet outrageous adventure: travel to his time, marry him, and return home.

I enjoyed the story of Cate and Connor, as they made a great couple…loved them both. For much part of the book, it was frustrating that neither one of them could see that they were both falling in love with each other. But when they did, it was awesome. Loved the setting in medieval Scotland, the castles, as well as the added element of the Fae.

Very good secondary characters, such as Rosalyn, Robert, Duncan, Mairi, loved Beast too, and as usual, the cast of bad guys. Many of these great characters you will continue to see in future books.  Blane was a surprise, as they led us to believe he was the bad guy all through the book. Though no rape scenes (thankfully), the women are still treated with no respect, such as Mairi being offered to older men for money, lairds or ones they do not love. But that is probably true of those medieval days.

The end was pretty exciting, and I thoroughly enjoyed Cate going home to her time, and knowing what to do to help save Connor. Upon finding her brothers & father, she had them help her get Connor back. It was an interesting concept to allow them all to go back in time and save Connor, Robert and Mairi. After meeting Connor, I would love to see stories for Robert and Jesse and the girls waiting for them.

This series has nice concept with the time-travel switching between modern times and Scotland in 1272. I was also nice to see a different & nicer view of the Fae’s. Mayhue does an excellent job of keeping the reader interested throughout, with no dull periods/unnecessary details to skip.  Next book is “Highland Guardian”.
