REVIEW:WICKED EVER AFTER: One Mile and Brea is the second instalment is the second instalment in Shayla Black’s contemporary, adult WICKED AND DEVOTED erotic, romance merging of the Wicked Lovers, and Devoted Lovers series. WICKED EVER AFTER should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the events of book one WICKED AS SIN. Wicked as Sin, and Wicked ever After run parallel to and cross over with the author’s Devoted to Pleasure (Devoted Lovers #1)

Told from dual third person perspectives (Pierce and Brea) WICKED EVER AFTER continues to follow the struggling relationship between US military sniper Pierce ’One-Mile’ Walker, and preacher’s daughter /hair stylist Brea Bell. Pierce Walker works for EM Security Management but struggles with an assignment that went all to h*ll. Desperate for vengeance, Pierce will leave a heart broken Brea behind when he goes in search of Montilla, the head of the Mexican Cartel and the man who destroyed his life but all is not well within EM Security Management when a mole is suspected among one of their own. Meanwhile Brea Bell battles between head and heart when more devastating revelations affecting her life threaten her relationship with her father, prompting the narrow-minded gossips of Sunset, Louisiana to continue to bury the knife, opening wounds and breaking her heart.

The relationship between Brea and Pierce struggles with secrets and lies, miscommunication, jealousy, vengeance, and time spent apart. Pierce has gone underground and rogue in the hopes of taking down the man who tortured and abused our story line hero, and in this Brea finds herself alone at a time when she needs Pierce Walker the most. Brea’s relationship with her father, and his strict religious beliefs take precedent as Brea struggles with the ramifications of her relationship with the man that she loves, a relationship she believes is now in the past. The $ex scenes are intimate and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text but I struggled with the ongoing separation between our leading couple as we were no longer up close and personal with their building relationship-in this, I felt disconnected from their growing romance.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting characters including Brea’s best friend and Pierce Walker’s nemesis Cutter Bryant (Devoted to Pleasure , Devoted Lovers #1), Brea’s father Preacher Bell, her fellow workers at the local salon, and several members of EM Security Management whom we previously met in both the Wicked Lovers, and Devoted Lovers series.

WICKED EVER AFTER is a story of heart break and betrayal; secrets and lies; friendship, family, hope and love. The premise is emotional and captivating; the characters are numerous, energetic, broken and wounded; the romance struggles in the face of preconceived notions, religious beliefs and time apart.
