Description:
The glow from the fireplace throws an eerie light over the woman’s carefully arranged body, her lifeless eyes reflecting the flames that slowly burn the evidence of who did this to her…

When Detective Amanda Steele is called to the brutal murder scene of successful local author Felicity Kelley, her blood runs cold. Because Amanda not only knew the victim, but was the last person Felicity called moments before she was murdered. Plagued with guilt that she never answered, Amanda is left wondering whether she could have prevented the murder, and vows to catch the killer, no matter what.

Desperately searching the crime scene for clues, Amanda is shocked when she discovers a Queen of Hearts playing card, suggesting the murder could be an imitation of a scene from Felicity’s bestselling crime novel. Terrified that she is dealing with a crazed fan who could strike again, Amanda’s worst fears are confirmed when another innocent woman is viciously murdered, with the same chilling calling card left behind.

But when Amanda connects the murders with a cold case from fifteen years ago, a case that Felicity appears to have been researching for her next novel, she is forced to question if the killer’s motive is even more sinister than she first suspected. But the closer Amanda gets to unearthing this motive, the closer she gets to becoming the next victim…

Review:

Her Last Words by Carolyn Arnold is the 9th book in her fantastic Detective Amanda Steele series. I am a big fan of Arnold, having read most of her books, and I love this series, which continues with another great addition.  Her Last Words was a fantastic read, with me unable to put the book down.

Amanda Steele, our heroine, is a homicide detective in Dumfries, Virginia Police Department. Amanda returns home from a vacation with her boyfriend Logan and adopted daughter, Zoe: when she sees a voice message from a famous writer, Felicity Kelley. The following morning, Amanda receives word that Felicity Kelley was found murdered.  Since she and Trent were on an old case revolving Felicity’ sister, they both headed to the crime scene, and were given control of finding the case. Felicity was stabbed with a knife in her heart, as well as a Queen of Hearts playing card in her throat, which turns out to be a clue from Felicity’s newest bestselling crime novel.

In a short time, Amanda begins to connect the murders from a cold case 15 years ago, which Felicity was researching for her next novel. Amanda and Trent interview all the people involved with a publishing house, as well as investigating the dead woman from 15 years ago, to tie in the missing pieces. When another woman is murdered, with the same Queen of Hearts playing card, her and Trent suspect that someone is trying to throw them off the case.

I loved how Amanda is able to allow herself to take a weekend off to be with her daughter and Logan, to spend some quiet fun peaceful time away from the case. This was a very good change.  Her and Trent make great partners, always helping each other.

What follows is an exciting, suspenseful, intriguing, tense mystery, that kept me unable to put the book down, as this was a fantastic thriller. From the start, you become engrossed into the story. The last third of the book was fast-paced, intense, exciting thriller, with many twists along the way. To say too much more would be spoilers.

Her Last Words was another fantastic crime thriller that held my breath throughout.  This once again is an excellent police procedural, great characters, gripping storyline, and surprise twists along the way.  Her Last Words was once again so very well written by Carolyn Arnold, which is the norm for this author; as I am loving this series. If you like mystery thrillers, police procedural, then you need to be reading this series.

Love at First Bark by Michelle Major – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / BAM / Bookbub

Description:
Sometimes love happens in the most re-bark-able way.

Cassie Raebourn’s love life has gone to the dogs—literally. A childhood trauma inspired her career as a veterinarian where she indulges her special fondness for dogs. Then, Aiden Riley unexpectedly walks into her clinic and steals her heart. The reckless rodeo star was at the center of the trauma all those years ago. Cassie knows Aiden feels the attraction too. Can they bury the past and find the courage to let each other in?

Review:

Love at First Bark by Michelle Major is the 12th book in her Crimson, Colorado series.   I have not read the earlier books of this series, not really knowing about it.  I have become a fan of Michelle Major having loved her Carolina Girls, Magnolia Sisters series.

We meet Cassie Raebourn and Aiden Riley at the start, when they were young teenagers; in a heartbreaking scene where Aiden’s dog was brought to the veterinarian clinic in hope to save his dog, who was brutally beaten by Aiden’s abusive father.  Cassie worked part time to help at the clinic.  The dog died, and Aiden left Crimson, with his mother and sister, getting away from the terrible father/husband.

Twenty years later, Cassie also returns to Crimson to be near her mother, and fills in at the same veterinarian clinic where she volunteered as a youngster. Cassie has always been an animal lover, is hoping to become a partner at the clinic; with one vet she was close to and the other vet, very unlikeable.  Residents who come to the clinic love Cassie, with her sunny personality and wonderful care and compassion of the animals. Cassie is surprised to see Aiden again, after all the years, as he arrives at the clinic with his nephew, George, who is carrying an injured puppy.

Aiden came back to his home town to help out his sister and nephew, as his sister Lila recently lost her husband.  He is surprised when he sees Cassie, who is now a veterinarian, come out to look at the dog, Spud. He was happy to see her again, but because of his terrible past, Aiden comes across as difficult, telling his nephew that they will not take care of the dog. Other then his sister and nephew, Aiden has closed any feelings for anyone.  He doesn’t plan on staying long, especially remembering all those bad memories. Cassie having witnessed the horrible time years ago, understands how Aiden has shut himself down, with the exception of his sister and nephew.

It is Cassie’s mother and Lila (Aiden’s sister) who work toward pushing Aiden to open himself up, as well as Cassie to try to get Aiden to allow for Spud to be adopted.  Cassie is wonderful vet, so caring, and a few times, she gets Aiden to help injured animals, and eventually he will adopt another dog, who lost his leg in an accident.  Though at the start, Aiden and Cassie do feel some sparks, but both are not in the best situation in their lives.  In a short time, we can see a romance forming between them, but Cassie who finds herself eventually falling for Aiden, recognizes the difficulty of getting Aiden to open his heart. Will Cassie succeed in winning Aiden over and staying in Crimson?

Cassie is also dealing with Dr. Smith, who is mean, heartless and not a caring vet, and he is determined to fire her, since everyone likes her.  His constant demeaning attitude against Cassie was terrible. Aiden will come forward a few times to defend Cassie. Lila, to her happiness, receives an offer to sell the land, as she could not handle it.

Love at First Bark was a wonderful story, revolving around family, animals and love. It was nice to see Cassie and Aiden slowly finding love along the way.  I loved all the dogs, especially Spud and Rosie, who were so great to watch. The epilogue at the end was great.   I really enjoyed the book, which is no surprise, as I enjoy Michelle Major’s books.  If you like a slow burn romance, great secondary characters and wonderful dogs, you should read this book.

Description:
The oldest of seven sisters, Ursula Simmons has followed in her mother’s footsteps as a novelist. With a bad case of writer’s block, she brings her notebooks and computer home to the old brothel called Paradise where they all grew up, in the hope that being home for the holidays will inspire her—and since it’s Christmas, all her sisters will be there too. The sisters take the holidays very seriously, and as soon as they’ve celebrated Thanksgiving, it’s on to decorating for Christmas. As all pitch in to make the spirits bright, younger sister Endora is dismayed to find some of the handsome men who’ve come to help doing more flirting than anything else. She’s determined to show her sisters that no relationship is worth the heartbreak. But it might be Ursula who reminds the family that Christmas is a magical time, and finding new love is always a gift.

Review:

Paradise for Christmas by Carolyn Brown is the 1st book in her new Sisters in Paradise series. We meet Ursula Simmons, who is the oldest daughter of the seven sisters in this family.  Ursula has decided to move back home to Paradise, which used to be an old brothel, with her mother still living there with her husband, Joe Clay (she was divorced at a young age, with the first husband leaving her to bring up seven young girls).  The story revolves around the holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and all seven children return home to be together to decorate and celebrate the holidays, (we meet the Simmons sisters, Ursula, Ophelia, Tertia, Rae, Bo, Endora and Luna)

The girl’s mother, Mary Jane is a famous novelist, and Ursula is also a writer, in the midst of a writer’s block that she hopes coming home will find her muse. She is trying to write a historical novel, based on Daisy, a mail order bride, who made friends with the madam during the old days.  Ursula meets Remy, who lives next door, and someone she had a crush on in high school.  In a short time, both Remy and Ursula will begin to have feelings for each other, as well as Remy helping her find old books about the brothel and Daisy, her muse.  I really enjoyed Remy and Ursula, who were so great together.

Luna, the youngest sister (she is a twin, Endora), and she too finds someone she is falling in love with.  Shane is her boyfriend, and their relationship escalates over time.  They too were both great together.  However, Luna and all the sisters try to help Endora get over her broken heart, when her boyfriend, was she caught having an affair with her best friend.

It was nice to see all the sisters return home to help celebrate the holidays, as well as all seven of them spending the day together buying presents for all.  They all take the holidays very seriously, jumping from Thanksgiving and then Christmas. I loved how Mary Jane and Joe Clay (all the girls called him Daddy, since he was always part of the family) created such a wonderful family. I thought Aunt Bernie (a former bar owner) was a hoot, always pushing and using curses forcing Ursula and Luna into relationships. This was a great family with wonderful strong bonds.

Paradise For Christmas was an enchanting delightful family-oriented story that not only captured the holiday spirit, but emphasized a family filled with love, support, happiness and heartwarming. Paradise for Christmas was so very well written by Carolyn Brown. I look forward to seeing who will be the next two sisters.

Review:

A Dawn of Onyx by Kate Golden is the first book in her new debut The Sacred Stones series. We meet Arwen Valondale, our heroine, who lives all of her life in a small town, taking care of her sick mother and her younger sister; she also has the ability to use her healing powers to help people.  Arwen’s brother is in the army, helping to fight against a war against the Kingdom of Onyx; when her brother escapes a battle, he also steals some Onyx gold. The family knows they need to leave to another Kingdom, as the brother is being chased; Arwen runs back to get something and is captured by soldiers of the Onyx Kingdom. Arwen offers herself in exchange for her families lives; where she ends up in the dungeons, next to a handsome stranger. Arwen begins to work as a healer to help the injured in Onyx, where she will meet the feared King Kane Ravenwood.

Kane Ravenwood, our hero and the Onyx King, is charming, sexy, mysterious and cute flirtations; which Arwen will learn a short time that he was the handsome stranger, who was indeed the King. From the start, Kane found himself attracted to Arwen, being very protective, supporting her along the way; his devotion to her was wonderful, despite her determination to escape and find her family. Arwen was very well liked, as she seemed happy to be able help cure the injured, and made friends on Onyx; especially Mari, who became a great friend to Arwen.

In a short time, both Arwen and Kane begin have feelings for each other, with the banter, tension and chemistry between them being fun. I did like Kane, as he was always protective, and willing to help Arwen.  I also liked Arwen, as she was finding herself happy in Onyx, but was determined to do anything to find her family; but at times she was foolish in her attempts.  This was a slow burn romance, with Arwen knowing she was falling for Kane, but she continued to try to escape.

In the last third of the book, everything changes, as we learn the truths of the enemy leader Arwen thought was good, turns out to be a major enemy of Kane; and secrets are revealed. The warring kingdoms, fae magic, dark prophecies lead to danger.

A Dawn of Onyx was a fun fantasy, in a unique world that was not only romantic, but dark kingdoms, fae, humans, as well as an excellent world building. The ending was a cliff hanger, leaving us to having to wait for the next book.  A Dawn of Onyx was well written by Kate Golden. I look forward to the next book.

Long Past Dues by James J. Butcher – a Review

Long Past Dues by James J. Butcher – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Bookbub

Description:
Grimsby, the newest Auditor in the magical Department of Unorthodox Affairs, finds himself in hot water when he intercepts a friend’s case in this fast-paced and thrilling urban fantasy.

Against all odds, Grimshaw Griswald Grimsby has become an Auditor, enforcing laws about magic for Boston’s Department of Unorthodox Affairs. But Grimsby soon realizes the daily grind of his job is far removed from the glamour he imagined. Overlooked for every exciting case, Grimsby tires of being told to handle mundane magical troubles, and appropriates a case file intended for a friend.

Alongside Leslie Mayflower, the temporarily unretired Huntsman, Grimsby aims to crack the case and discover the origin of a strange, unfinished ritual—one that seems to imitate the handiwork of a foe Mayflower put down twenty years ago.

Together, they’ll have to deal with escaped werewolves, a cursed artifact, and a perilous journey to the mysterious subterranean city below Boston, all to uncover the shocking truth. At any cost, Grimsby must stop this ritual from finally being completed. Yet the cost may be paid not by himself but by his friends. . . .

Review:

Long Past Dues by James J. Butcher is the 2nd book in his urban fantasy The Unorthodox Chronicles series. Refresher:  The Unorthodox Chronicles is a magic world, with human Usuals and paranormal Unorthodox; the Department of Unorthodox Affairs and Auditors are government magical elites, with witches who use spells to control their power.  It is a world where magic is out in the open but tightly regulated.

Grimsby, our hero, has recently become an Auditor, working for Boston’s Department of Unorthodox Affairs. He is partnered with Mayflower (Huntsman), an assassin for the Unorthodox; but lately Mayflower hasn’t been around, thinking of retiring; and Grimsby is stuck doing menial jobs.  When he is in his boss’s office to complain, he sees a folder for a friend (Rayne) and switches folders to take on an exciting case.  When Grimsby shows the folder to Mayflower, he becomes interested, as he sees something long in the past, that bring them together to find out the truths.

Together, they begin an investigation to discover who performed a recent incomplete ritual, that reminds Mayflower of someone he eliminated 20 years ago. Mayflower does not have certain abilities, such as Grimsby’s witch powers, which helps them discover the danger in the horizon. In a short period, Grimsby becomes concerned about his friend, Rayne, and worries she is in danger, pushing Mayflower to help him find Rayne.

I had noted in my first book review, that Grimsby was a bit unsure of himself, always bumbling things; this does continue in the second book, though nearer to the end he got better.  Having Mayflower as his partner eventually gave him more confidence. I did like Grimsby’s pet friend, Wudge, who was off the wall for the most part.  I also liked Rayne, but the ending was left so open. Because of the cliffhanger, I have not decided if I want to read the next book.

Long Past Dues is an urban fantasy adventure, slow going at times and suspenseful closer to the end.  The last half of the book, Grimsby and Mayflower are constantly thrown into chaos and danger. Long Past Dues was a good story written by James J. Butcher, though I did think there was too many details and redundancy.

Review:

Devil of the High Seas by Lauren Smith, is the third book in her Pirates of King’s Landing Series. It’s not necessary to read the other books as they all stand alone on their own, there are characters from previous books (but you’ll only know that if you’ve read them.)Twists and turns will keep you on the edge, the battles and fight scenes are great, the sad parts will make you reach for tissues, and the chemistry between Gavin and Josie will have you wishing it was longer…..

Gavin left his home seven years ago when the love of his life chose his twin Griffin!! But now he’s back, for revenge!! Returning home after losing his ship (to a mutiny) he’s home to lick his wounds and salvage his pride….

Josephine is due to marry the upstanding Earl of Castleton, it’s not the life she’s dreamed of, but she’s not about to disappoint her family…..Being abducted by a pirate sweeps Josie into a world that’s beyond her wildest imagination. That’s the thanks she gets for helping a stranger who’s wounded!

Her family chase the pair across the seas, there is danger lurking in every corner! But that doesn’t stop this couple from falling in love ?

But how can they possibly be together when Gavin is a pirate and she’s already betrothed?

It was great to see previous characters from the other books (I personally love to catch up with couples from previous books.) I loved Jodie’s father (there is a scene in the book which I loved ?)

Yes, it’s a little cheesy in places. Yes it’s also predictable in its ending. But I love this authors style of writing, and I love this series, so I’m going to continue to read and recommend these books.

Review:

Fall of Ruin and Wrath by Jennifer L. Armentrout is the first book in her new Awakening series. Background: Long ago, the world was destroyed by gods. Only nine cities were spared. Separated by vast wilderness teeming with monsters and unimaginable dangers, each city is now ruled by a guardian―royalty who feed on mortal pleasure.

Calista (Lis), our heroine, was an orphan at a young age, not knowing her parents; she befriends Grady, who becomes her best friend and together they manage to live a hard street life. Lis was born with intuition and mind reading abilities, and as she gets older, she finds a safe and comfortable life as a courtesan (and paramour) of the Baron of Archwood. In exchange for his protection, Lis grants the Baron with information, such as her intuition and foresight; as well as giving Grady a job as guard.

One night, Lis senses something wrong, and walks out to the forest, only to see a group of men hurting a man, who happens to be a Hyborn, and she helps safe his life, as well as fix his injuries. In a short time, she will meet Thorne again, when he arrives at the Baron home, and she learns he is a Prince. Thorne is immediately enamored by the beautiful Lis, and the banter between them was fun.  Lis is fighting her feelings for Thorne, as she is torn between her intuition that senses danger and facing a possible doomed fate.  I really liked Lis, as she was brave, strong, independent, though I was not a fan of the many spicy smut scenes Lis has with both the Baron and Thorne. I did really like Thorne, especially since he seemed to really care for her; though despite his charismatic attitude, he was also possessive.

The last third of the book was very exciting and intense with Lis’s life very much in danger. There were a number of surprising twists and turns along the way. Fall of Ruin and Wrath was a compelling story, which I look forward to the next book. Fall of Ruin and Wrath was an amazing world building, at times confusing, filled with great characters, mystery; but it was very well written by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Fused in Earth and Stone by Sandy Williams – a Review

Fused in Earth and Stone by Sandy Williams – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play

Description:
Kennedy knew challenging the power-players of the supernatural world would come at a cost, but she always thought she’d be the one to pay the price.

When Kennedy dares to open The Rain’s doors to unsanctioned paranorms, she sets off a chain of events that will test her determination like never before. As retribution, the ruthless master vampire, Arcuro, captures one of Kennedy’s closest allies. Despite the advice from those around her, she refuses to let Arcuro’s actions go unanswered.

Kennedy must navigate the politics of the paranormal world to form new alliances, but one tiny misstep could result in disaster, and one small act of indiscretion might reveal feelings Kennedy has tried so hard to ignore. If she wanted to play it safe, she would stay away from Blake and his teasing smiles. Unfortunately, she’ll need his help to have any chance to free her friend.

With doubts chipping away at her confidence and old enemies resurfacing, Kennedy comes up with a risky plan. Can she outwit the cunning master vampire? Or will her resolve to undermine him lead her down a treacherous path, putting The Rain and everyone around her in jeopardy?

Review:

Fused in Earth and Stone by Sandy Williams is the 3rd book in her wonderful Kennedy Rain series. Refresher: Kennedy Rain, our heroine, is in sole control of the Rain Hotel. What makes the Rain Hotel unique?   The hotel is a null zone for paranormals, with a treaty that has been in effect for hundreds of years; a place to recover, be at peace, or just time to relax with no pressure; a werewolf can avoid the full moon or a vampire can see the sun, or recover from an injury. The Werewolves and Vampires, plus some other unknow species take turns to come and stay at the hotel.

Kennedy is still forbidding the werewolves or vampires to enter the Rain Hotel, despite both the Wolves and Vampire leaders being very angry with her.  Kennedy knows that Shelli, the witch and her coven were the ones who killed her parents, and she wants revenge. With the inn still closed, Kennedy realizes she needs to do something to open the hotel, and allows any unsanctioned paranorms that are willing to put their names on a list that she puts up, without the approval the Lehr (or Arcuro). A number of wolves enter the hotel, which sets off a chain of events.

Beside Lehr (Werewolf leader) being angry, it is the ruthless Arcuro (Vampire master) who acts out by capturing Daegen, one of Kennedy’s allies.  Though Jared, Nora, Blake try to tell Kennedy that there is no hope to save Daegen; but she is determined to find a way to save him.  Kennedy will devise a risky plan to meet with old ancient vampires to help kill Arcuro.  Will the plan work?

When everything falls apart, she finds herself, as well as Christian, in extreme danger, with their lives in jeopardy.  Not only has an old enemy resurfaced, Kennedy will need to be a step ahead to defeat the evil who killed her parents.  Blake will also put himself in danger, when trying to rescue Kennedy at the hands of Arcuro. Can they outwit the nasty master vampire?

Kennedy is also determined to keep her human friends safe, as they have never been aware of the hotel, and the paranormals.  I liked Kennedy, who was a great heroine, as she was as stubborn as ever.  I have hoped at some time in the future, she and Blake might have a possible romance in future books; though the werewolf leader would never allow it.

What follows is a, tense and exciting story, with Kennedy in the middle of it all. There was so much action from start to finish, I could not put the book down; as it was an edge of your seat thriller.  I do not want to tell too much more, as it would ruin it for you.  As we raced to the climax, with the evil always threatening Kennedy, I really liked the ending and can’t wait for the next book. Fused in Earth and Stone was an excellent addition to this series, which was very well written by Sandy Williams
