Description:
Legend goes that long ago a Flores woman offended the old gods, and their family was cursed as a result. Now, every woman born to the family has a touch of magic.

Sage Flores has been running from her family—and their “gifts”—ever since her younger sister Sky died. Eight years later, Sage reluctantly returns to her hometown. Like slipping into an old, comforting sweater, Sage takes back her job at Cranberry Rose Company and uses her ability to communicate with plants to discover unusual heritage specimens in the surrounding lands.

What should be a simple task is complicated by her partner in botany sleuthing: Tennessee Reyes. He broke her heart in high school, and she never fully recovered. Working together is reminding her of all their past tender, genuine moments—and new feelings for this mature sexy man are starting to take root in her heart.

With rare plants to find, a dead sister who keeps bringing her coffee, and another sister whose anger fills the sky with lightning, Sage doesn’t have time for romance. But being with Tenn is like standing in the middle of a field on the cusp of a summer thunderstorm—supercharged and inevitable.

Review:

Witch of Wild Things by Raquel Vasquez Gilliland is a fun, interesting and romantic stand-alone novel, about a family of female witches, with a paranormal element. Sage Flores, our heroine, left home 8 years ago, after her youngest sister died in an accident. She has recently lost her job, and now returns to Cranberry Rose to live with her aunt Nadia and estranged sister, Teal. Each of the family women have different magic abilities, as they are witches; Sage is a plant whisperer; able to communicate with the plant’s souls; Teal, when angry, can create havoc on the weather/storms; Aunt Nadia has the ability to know things.  Both Sage and Teal do not get along, mostly due to the sister’s death.

Sage gets a job working where she used to work, at the Cranberry Rose Company to help find new plants and help increase the farm’s sales. She is shocked to find her high school crush (who broke her heart), Tennessee (Ten) Reyes is also going to work there, and now they have been teamed up to search for elite special plants.  At first, Sage was a bit sarcastic with Ten, but in a short time, the sparks between them sizzle, as they are both extremely attracted to one another. Ten went out of his way to work closely with Sage, also learning more about her plant whisperer abilities.  Working side by side, brought back memories of the past, and strong new feelings bringing them closer together.

Sage tries hard to solve her family issues, especially the past when Sky died. Sage, also has another secret, that she has not revealed to her family.  Seems her dead sister, Sky, appears quite often (she is a ghost), giving her advice or coffee. When she and Sky (who no one sees) visit another witch older witch, to find out why Sky cannot move on, which will bring them back to Aunt Nadia to use her knowledge to find an amazing and magical discovery.

Witch of Wild Things was a very good story with many things, such as dysfunctional family, romance, sisterhood, friendship, trauma and magical witches.  I loved Sage and Tenn together, as they were a great couple.  By the end, I loved all of the family and female witches, with their individual magical ability. Most of all, I loved the wonderful happy ever after ending.  Witch of Wild Things was very well written by Raquel Vasquez Gilliland. I suggest you read this book.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 12, 2023

Scarlett Fontaine is a true Hollywood legend—a singer, actress, and beloved fashion icon. But Scarlett dies tragically at just thirty-six years old, leaving behind no children. Or so the story goes…

Gwen Hollingsworth is the curator at a museum dedicated to Scarlett’s life. She’s also sole heir to Scarlett’s fortune as a descendant of the star. But all is not well in Gwen’s world. She’s dealing with a messy marital separation and is struggling to move forward. So when Peter Miller, a biographer and photojournalist, comes to the museum with shocking claims about Scarlett—a life of exile in Alaska, a baby born in secret—Gwen’s whole world is turned upside down. Again.

Determined to uncover the truth, Gwen and Peter set out for Alaska together but soon find themselves on a path toward something far deeper and more meaningful than either of them ever expected.

A Storm of Infinite Beauty takes readers on a breathtaking journey from a lush vineyard in Nova Scotia to a rustic lodge in Alaska where old family secrets are revealed and the quest for true happiness begins.

•••

REVIEW: A STORM OF INFINITE BEAUTY by Julianne Maclean is a stand alone story line of women’s fiction focusing on two timelines, two women, two pregnancies, and a family history ripe in fame, secrets and lies.

Told from omniscient third person perspectives and dual times lines 1963-64, and 2017, A STORM OF INFINITE BEAUTY focuses on Hollywood legend Scarlett Fontaine aka Valerie McCarthy in the year before her life changed in the blink of an eye.

In 2017, former photojournalist turned author Peter Miller is hoping to write the biography of the late award winning, Hollywood legend Scarlett Fontaine, and his search for the truth brings him to Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada where the Scarlett Fontaine Museum is located and housed in a large Victorian mansion. Meeting curator and Scarlett Fontaine descendant Gwen Hollingsworth sets into motion a journey to Alaska where Gwen and Peter will uncover the heart breaking story and beginnings of the woman the world would come to know as Scarlett Fontaine.

In 1963-64, the reader is ‘told’ the story of Valerie McCarthy as she is banished, by her family to Alaska, where she will never come to terms with a perceived betrayal, accepting of the present, and a new direction in life going forward. A secret pregnancy, the Great Alaskan earthquake of 1964, and the death of 139 lives forces Valerie to take on a new role, a new life, and the personification of someone who has it all.

A STORM OF INFINITE BEAUTY is a dramatic, heart breaking, emotional and tragic story of betrayal, unrequited love, dysfunctional family behavior, loss and acceptance set against the real world earthquake and ensuing tsunamis in Alaska in 1964. The premise is edgy, haunting and real; the characters are desperate and impassioned. A STORM OF INFINITE BEAUTY is a journey; a trek into the past focusing on loss, love and taking back control.

TRC:Hi Julianne and welcome to The Reading Café.

Congratulations on the release of A STORM OF INFINITE BEAUTY.

We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

JM:  Sure! I’ve been writing novels for thirty years, and I have a wonderfully supportive husband and a 26-year-old daughter who is currently studying to be a chiropractor. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

JM: There have been many influences over the years. I was very lucky to have a mentor early on when I began writing historical romance. I joined a writers’ group in the 1990’s and met the late Jo Beverley, who was incredibly generous in sharing her knowledge. It was amazing to meet a real published author when I was just starting out. Later, when I began publishing novels independently, Bella Andre was an incredible inspiration for me. She’s very smart about the business of publishing and I learned a lot from her about focus and discipline.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties have you encountered writing and publishing your stories?

JM: It was tough to break into the publishing world in the late 1990’s. It took me six years before I landed a contract, so I spent those years writing and submitting — and usually getting rejected! But I have no regrets about that because it forced me to keep improving my manuscripts to become a better writer. I also learned to persevere and not give up, even in the face of rejection.

TRC: Would you please tell us something about the premise of A STORM OF INFINITE BEAUTY?

JM: A STORM OF INFINITE BEAUTY is a dual timeline novel which takes readers back to the great Alaskan earthquake of 1964 (a true historic event), so there’s quite a bit of action surrounding the main character’s emotional journey. I think readers will enjoy the escape to stunning and beautiful Alaska while also learning about what happened there in 1964. And they’ll experience it through the eyes and hearts of the two female leads who each have personal battles to fight in their own lives. There’s also a love story at the book’s core, which readers have come to expect from me. I don’t think I could write a book without a love story, even if it’s tragic or unrequited.

TRC: How do you keep the plot(s) unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

JM: That’s a great question, and it’s a challenge to keep things fresh when sometimes it feels like everything in books and movies has been done before. But generally, when I’m plotting a novel, I try to lead the reader down what looks like a predictable path, but then I steer away from the obvious and take a sharp left turn.

In my opinion, whether something feels believable depends on the characters’ thoughts, emotions, and actions. If those feel real and make sense, how they navigate through unexpected events should also feel real and authentic.

TRC: Do you believe the cover image plays a deciding factor for many readers in the process of selecting a book or new series to read?

JM: I can’t speak for other readers, but for me, the cover image is often what initially attracts me to a book. It’s what catches my eye if I’m simply browsing in a store or online. If it looks like a quality read, and the title is intriguing, then the back cover description becomes the most important element that truly sells it to me.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

JM: For me, it’s a little of both. I usually have the broad plot points figured out before I begin writing a novel, so I know the main events that are going to happen, but within each scene, and while getting from one major plot point to the next, the characters lead me there. Sometimes I’m not sure what will happen within a scene until the characters start talking and interacting.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen?  Where do you believe writers fail in this endeavor?

JM: At the most basic level, I think a good writer needs to write cleanly and clearly, and that’s where craft is important. I’m referring to the use of strong verbs, avoiding passive sentences, repetition of words or ideas, and making sure the structure and length of each sentence is varied so that they all flow together with a pleasant rhythm. (Note that this can be handled during the editing and polishing phase.)

Outside of that, I feel the writer needs to get into the mind—as well as the skin—of the character and strive to feel the emotions as they write. This of course requires the all-important use of imagination. If the character is being chased by a bear or is falling down a mountain, the writer’s heart should be pounding as they imagine and describe such an experience.

The icing on top of all that is the use of all five senses. The writer shouldn’t lose sight of the physical world when his character is moving through a scene. This might be where writers fail in the goal of pulling a reader into the storyline and keeping them there. The writer might communicate the character’s thoughts and feelings very well, but the reader wants to be transported fully into the character’s personal experience. They want to feel what the character is feeling, emotionally and physically as well. For example… Is it raining? Is the character’s skin wet and cold, and is this making him shiver when he’s trying to talk to someone? Or is he drunk and losing his balance? Or is the smell of lilacs reminding a character of her childhood and helping her to make sense of her current situation? So, the bottom line is this: emotions are important, but so are physical sensations. The reader needs the whole experience.

Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

JM: I don’t listen to music. I need absolute quiet, or at least white noise. The rhythm of the words is my music!

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family.  With whom do you bounce ideas?

My husband is my sounding board for plot ideas, and he’s great at it. My cousin is also my critique partner, and she will let me know if something in my book needs a shot in the arm.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

JM: I’m not sure, but maybe there’s an expectation that an author should know everything about every single aspect of the world. Sometimes we make mistakes (about a setting detail for instance) because we’re human. It’s not because we don’t care or are too lazy to do research. We’re really trying to do our best. Sometimes even a copyeditor won’t pick up on an obscure detail that a certain reader might notice. Mistakes happen to us all, and it only bothers me when a reader says it ruined the whole book for them and they didn’t bother to finish.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

JM: I have a weakness for crystal stemware.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

JM: I’m almost finished the first draft of my next book which is due in a few months. It’s set on Sable Island off the coast of Nova Scotia, my home province.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

JM: Thanks for having me!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 7, 2023

The lost Mafia princess has been found, and I will make her mine.

Bianca Carlotti might despise me, but little does she know that only feeds the beast within. I will marry the innocent princess and use her to exact revenge on the enemies who would destroy me.

Kidnapping her is easy and, as my wife, Bianca will be tamed. I will seduce her with the pleasures and privileges of the life she should have had, mold her into the type of woman who can hold her own in my world, and teach her to obey.

Whether she likes it or not, Bianca is now mine, and it’s time to use her to make my enemies pay. But my wife—my weapon—might just be the cause of my downfall.

•••••

REVIEW: RUTHLESS POSSESSION is the first instalment in Zoe Delaney (aka Jen Katemi) contemporary, adult DARK ENEMIES dark, erotic, Mafia romance trilogy focusing on twenty-five year old, heir to the Carlotta empire Bianca Carlotti, and Gregorio ‘Rio’ Agosti, head of the Carlotti-Agosti Crime syndicate.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Bianca and Rio) RUTHLESS POSSESSION follows in the aftermath of the abduction of our story line heroine. Believing herself to be Bree Walker, Bianca will quickly come to discover she is the only living heir to the Carlotti Crime Empire. Adopted as an infant, Bianca never knew the truth about her parents, and their connection to organized crime but within hours of her kidnapping Bianca will discover that all is not as it appears to be, and she is about to get a crash course on life, living with a mobster. Married and forced to sign over her family’s control, Bianca must learn to play the doting wife or face the consequences at home. What ensues is the building but acrimonious relationship between Bianca and Rio, and the potential fall out as betrayal and and fear sit at the heart of Bianca’s need to run.

The world building introduces some of the background behind Bianca’s abduction. As the sole surviving member of a powerful crime family, Bianca has been targeted by those hoping for a seat at the top but Rio Agosti is the first to discover Bree Walker’s true identity, an discovery that threatens our story line heroine.

The relationship between Rio and Bianca is an enemies to lovers, forced marriage in which Bianca is slowly falling for the man who is about to steal her life but marriage to a mobster means facing down the dangers of life living in the criminal underworld, and Bianca wants only to survive without losing it all. As Rio continues to threaten the people she loves, Bianca knows that to protect everyone, she may have to run to protect herself. The $ex scenes are erotic, provocative and not without some issues of consent.

We are introduced to Rio’s brother Nikolas, their aunt Francine, as well as several members of competing crime families.

RUTHLESS POSSESSION is a story of power and control, crime and punishment, secrets and lies, trust and fear, betrayal and vengeance. The fast paced, character driven premise is dark, intriguing and dramatic; the romance struggles in the face of possession and fear; the characters are desperate, determined and edgy. RUTHLESS POSSESSION ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

Description:
TROUBLE COMES IN THREES…
One doomed love affair after another has made lovely Alex Walton swear off men. Now, she’s determined to try something that maybe she can succeed at: a writing career. Little does she know that a chance meeting with a strikingly handsome stranger, a mysterious obelisk, and lost kingdom will change her life forever. As Alex is about to discover, truth can be stranger–and far more dangerous–than fiction.

…BUT TRUE LOVE COMES ONLY ONCE
After three years inside a terrorist organization, Phillip Turman is trying to rebuild his life. His first assignment is to pick up Alex Walton, the maid of honor for his best friend’s wedding, at the airport. His second is to deal with his instant attraction to her. But his third may be the toughest: to keep Alex out of danger as his past–and her need to know about it–threaten to destroy their future.

Review:

The Art of Desire by Selena Montgomery (aka Stacey Abrams) is a standalone thriller. I have not read the previous books by Montgomery, but I did enjoy this book, so I will have to look into more of her books.

Phillip Thurman, our hero, is a secret agent, who was held behind bars for three years, by a terrorist organization. Phillip is trying to resume his life, and is attending his best friend’s wedding as best man. He has soured on any relationship, as his previous girlfriend, before he was taken prisoner, dumped him.  Phillip is assigned to watch over Alex Walton, especially to pick her up to bring her to the wedding, where she is the maid of honor. Despite his determination to not become involved, Phillip finds himself becoming extremely attracted to Alex.

Alex Walton, our heroine, is a very talented artist, as well as a writer, not to mention she is beautiful. Alex has had her share of men, whom never stays long with. Then she meets Phillip and the attraction between them is sizzling. Alex was a great heroine, very talkative and witty, and she will rival Phillip along the way. We get to see Adam and Raleigh from the previous book, Rules of Engagement; as it is their wedding, and Adam is close to Phillip and Raleigh is best friends with Alex.

All of them will team up, as there is a conspiracy to seize the kingdom of Jafir, and Alex’s friend, Damon turns out to be the true heir.  The danger escalates as those determined to rule will stop at nothing to kill Phillip, Damon and Alex. It is Alex who has what the terrorists need, an Obelisk and a Ruby, which is required for the accession. Phillip, who has totally fallen in love with Alex, is determined to keep her away from Jafir, being too dangerous; not to mention he still is threaten by those terrorists.

What follows is an exciting, wild, intense last half of the book, that kept me glued to my kindle.  Who will survive? The Art of Desire was very well written by Selena Montgomery.  If you enjoy political thrillers, I suggest you read this book.  I did enjoy it very much.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 29, 2023

Star Shine Meadows is all about freedom, thanks to the hippie parents who raised her. Juggling her jobs as a professional costume character actor and a line sitter, she believes in no expectations, no stressful ambitions, and no-strings-attached relationships. So when she meets a birthday girl’s grumpy uncle while working a princess party, she can’t help but needle him. She’ll never see him again, and honestly, he’s pretty hot.

Rafe Whitman may be a veterinarian with a great bedside manner, but that doesn’t mean his patience extends to anyone with opposable thumbs. His family will not stop nagging him about finding “the one,” so when he runs into obnoxiously cheery Star again, he makes her an offer: He’ll pay her more than she would make doing her odd jobs if she’ll pretend to be his girlfriend at family gatherings. She can stop sitting in line waiting for someone else’s new phone, and he’ll get his family off his back.

When the tension between them heats to a breaking point, Star’s desire for “no strings” is tested against Rafe’s staunch stability. They say opposites attract, after all.

•••••

REVIEW:THE LOVE PLOT by Samantha Young is a stand alone, contemporary, adult, romance story line focusing on Star Shine Meadows, and thirty-three year old, veterinarian Dr. Rafe Whitman.

Told from first person perspective (Star) THE LOVE PLOT follows the fake relationship agreement between Star Shine Meadows, and thirty-three year old, veterinarian Dr. Rafe Whitman. Star Meadows grew up with unconventional parents, in an unconventional life style, has two unconventional jobs, and a tight knit group of unconventional friends. A job posing as a Disney princess finds Star face to face with Dr. Rafe Whitman, the birthday girl’s uncle, and a man whose family is desperate to find him a wife. Butting proverbial heads from the outset, Rafe offers Star a six month, financially exclusive contract as his ‘fake girlfriend’ in which Star will discover her unconventionality does not fit well with the Whitman side of life. As Star slowly falls for the man in question, his family is slowly changing our story line heroine. What ensues is the building relationship between Star and Rafe, and the potential fall-out as Star begins to lose herself in an effort to support the man with whom she has fallen in love.

The relationship between Star and Rafe begins acrimoniously. Rafe is troubled by Star’s methods of employment but desperate times force Rafe to offer Star another ‘unconventional’ contract, a contract to play the loving girlfriend of a man who is struggling in his personal life. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Star’s friends, and her Bohemian parents, as well as Rafe’s extended family of rich snobs and questionable friends.

THE LOVE PLOT is a ‘sunshine-grumpy’ story line of desperation and determination, friendships and family, acceptance and love. The premise is entertaining, engaging and inviting; the characters are flirty, sassy and lively; the romance is edgy, tender and emotional.

I was shocked to find Rafe striding determinedly in my direction again. His broody face was more brooding than usual, so I braced myself.
Rafe Whitman drew to a stop before me and blurted out, “You’ll literally do anything for money?”
Anger flared in an instant from the tips of my toes to the ends of my hair, so I didn’t hear the tone in which the question was asked. I threw back my shoulders. Taller than average height at five-seven, I was still a good seven or eight inches shorter than this arrogant Manhattanite, but I was prepared to take him. Anyone who knew me knew I was a patient, laid-back kind of person . . . but Rafferty Whitman had crossed the line!
“What the hell does that mean?” I seethed. “Are you suggesting I charge money for sex?”
Rafe’s blue eyes flashed with indignation. “No, I am not,” he hissed at me, eyes darting around. “And lower your voice.”
“I will not lower my voice.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “I like most people, but you sure do make it difficult, Whitman. It’s like you get off on being as insulting as possible.”
He mirrored me, crossing his arms over his chest. “I’m not insulting you. If you’d paid attention, you’d realize the question was not meant to be untoward.”
“Untoward?” I grimaced. “What, are you from the nineteenth century? Is that why you hate phones? Because if the technology is difficult for you to grasp, I can teach you how to use a phone.” I was being a little shit now, but he brought it out in a person.
Rafe sneered. “How much will that cost me?”
Argghhh! I narrowed my eyes but smiled. “Oh, for you . . . twice as much as I’d charge anyone else.”
“I see. Well.” Rafe uncrossed his arms to reach into his back pocket. He removed his wallet and then a business card from that. Holding it out to me, he continued, “I guess you stand to make a lot of money for doing very little. If you’re interested, call me.”
Flummoxed, I took the card. “Um . . . doing what?”
But he was already walking away.
“Doing what, Whitman?” I yelled after him.
He didn’t answer, just casually strolled off. His suit pants molded perfectly to his sculpted ass. So unfairly physically perfect.
“Are you going to call him?”
I looked up from the business card that read Whitman Veterinary Clinic, Dr. Rafferty Whitman.
His vet clinic was on the busy, tree-lined Columbus Avenue. Nice location, Dr. Rafe.
There was his phone number right beneath the address.
Yvonne grinned at me, and I answered her question. “Nah.”
Her eyes bugged out of her head as her friends gaped at me in shock. “Uh, Clark Kent just asked you to call him, Star. You don’t turn down Clark Kent.”
“You do if he’s an asshole. Life lesson, girls: an attractive face should not sway you if a pompous, arrogant, insulting, offensive turd lurks behind it.”
Yvonne chuckled. “You did yell at him and try to embarrass him with the peanut butter and jelly stuff. That’s not true, is it?”
I rolled my eyes. “No, it’s not true.” But she was right. I had antagonized him.
“You should make it true. I’d roll in a bathtub of jelly with that man.”
Slipping the card into my purse, I shrugged. “Impossible. His ego would take up the whole tub. No room for jelly. Or me—I mean you.”
“You’re not the least bit curious to find out what he wants to pay you to do?”
“Considering how that sounds, nope. Not at all. Ooh, look, the line is moving. Yay.”
But as the girls turned to move with the line, I knew I was lying.
I was so curious, my heart still raced from my encounter with Rafe.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 22, 2023

What if you could have one more day with someone you lost?

Diana Merriman, a physical therapist, is probably the only person in the small town of Snow Haven, North Carolina, who isn’t looking forward to Christmas. It’s been three weeks since her fiancé Linus was critically injured when a car hit him as he biked home from the toy store he owns and manages. Watching him open his eyes is the only gift she wants, but she can’t help losing a little more hope every day.

But an unexpected visit from a friendly neighbor and finding a snow globe of Snow Haven—a gift Linus had hidden in the closet—the night before Christmas Eve changes things in ways Diana never would have imagined. Because on Christmas Eve Diana wakes up to find that it’s not—Christmas Eve, that is. Instead, it’s somehow December 4 all over again, the day Linus got hurt, and as mystified as Diana is, she immediately starts a plan to save her partner from his fate.

Nothing is that simple, of course. Instead of a single repeat of that day, Diana finds herself in an endless loop of December 4, experiencing every possible variation of events. Along the way, she uncovers startling truths about herself, her relationship, and even her career that illustrate the ways she’s retreated from her life—and in the face of life’s slights and outright blows, from her deepest feelings. Suddenly hope is second only to joy as Diana opens her heart to the people she loves in every way she can.

REVIEW:THROUGH THE SNOW GLOBE by Annie Rains is a contemporary, adult, women’s slightly paranormal fiction story line focusing on physical therapist Diana Merriman.

Told from omniscient third person perspective (Diana) THROUGH THE SNOW GLOBE follows Diana Merriman, a physical therapist who lives in Snow Haven, North Carolina. Diana Merriman is struggling with her job, her fiance and her direction in life ,and is doomed to repeat the day an accident left her fiance in a coma. December 4th is repeat on an endless loop when a visit from her neighbor on Christmas Eve finds Diana getting what she wished for, but at a cost. As Diana attempts to change the events that lead up to her fiancé’s accident, Diana will discover she isn’t the only person reliving the same day or heart break in their life.

THROUGH THE SNOW GLOBE focuses on new discoveries, new family, new paths, and new friendships. The sweet and gentle yet familiar premise blends a bit of ‘Groundhog Day’ with ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, as our heroine believes her own life is an endless cycle of the same but a wish reveals that change may be necessary when the heart begins beating anew.

Barb’s Review:

Shadow Dance by Christine Feehan is the 8th book in her fantastic Shadow Riders series. I have note that I loved this book, as we got to meet the New York Ferraro family, and throughout the whole book we spend so much time with all of our favorite Chicago family.  So much fun and entertaining. Refresher:   Shadow riders have the ability to blend themselves to the shadows wherever they are, making themselves invisible to anyone.  The Ferraro family runs a legitimate business; they use their ability to help others in need to solve various problems and dispense justice.  They are an extremely powerful and close-knit family that is totally loyal to one another, also protecting the people that in live in their community.

We meet Geno Ferraro, the head of the New York Shadow Rider family. He protects his territory, and his two brothers.  Geno senses something is amiss, with a number or murders against shadow riders all over the US & Europe. He thinks he has found an assassin, and calls Stefano to help him interrogate this person.

We meet Amaranthe (Amara) Aubert, our heroione, who is a famous dancer, now in New York to perform in the upcoming Romeo and Juliett show.  Amara, is captured by Geno, as he threatens her, thinking she is one of the murderers.  But soon he realizes with Stefano’s help, that she is a shadow rider working for the Archambault family to secretly find the enemies.  Amara knows that she needs to reveal her true reason for being in New York, especially with two powerful Shadow Riders leaders. Geno realizes that Amara is the one for him, and their attraction to each other is immediate, though Amara will not open up her heart, as she is determined to complete her mission. In a short period, Amara begins to fall hard for Geno, as well as his two fun brothers.  The romance between Geno and Amara was fierce and inspiring, as they were fantastic individuals, with Amara also being a powerful shadow rider.  Everything changes for both of them, as Geno never thought he would find the woman of his dreams, and Amara never had a family.

As noted above, all the members of the Chicago Ferarro’s played such a big part in helping fight the enemy, as well as other riders from various states.  I just loved seeing all of my favorites, and the fun they had teasing each other. Amara was an amazing heroine, with her fast-moving ability within the shadows, including at one time saving Stefano’s life.

Shadow Dance was an emotional story on many levels; the danger and threats from the evil shadow riders, as well as the sizzling romance between Geno and Amara, not to mention the wonderful bond all the Ferraro’s have for each other.  Geno wasn’t thrilled that Amara wanted to continue be a shadow rider, but he knew that any fears he had, resulted in her own fears for him. I will not give spoilers, as I do not want to ruin it for you; especially since this was a masterpiece.

Shadow Dance was a captivating, exciting, suspenseful, action-packed from start to finish; especially the fantastic last third of the book; where all the Ferraro family was is in danger.  Their romance was sizzling and I did love Geno and Amara together. This was an awesome addition to this series, and I was very happy that we will get more Shadow Riders stories from other families.

Christine Feehan once again gives us a fabulous story, which was so very well written.  This is a fantastic Paranormal series (quickly becoming my favorite series).  If you have not read this series, you need to start with the first book.  If you have read them all, you will love this one.

Sandy’s Review:

SHADOW DANCE is the eight instalment in Christine Feehan’s contemporary, adult SHADOW RIDERS paranormal, erotic, romance series focusing on the Ferraro Crime Family. This is Shadow Rider Geno Ferraro, and ballet dancer Amaranthe “Amara’ Aubert’s story line. SHADOW DANCER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

SOME BACKGROUND: The Shadow Rider male must find his mate –a woman who is capable of riding the shadows-or at the very least with the ability to bear children with the shadow-riding gene. Within the family, the Ferraro siblings are tasked with finding a mate, fated by DNA, who is capable of continuing the family line. People with the ability to ride the shadows are few and far between, and future generations are at risk if no mates are found with the shadow-riding gene. The Ferraro’s are also part of the Chicago Underworld-a crime family linked to both legal and criminal activity.

Told from third person perspectives SHADOW DANCER follows in the aftermath of the murder of Geno’s parents Eugene and Margo Ferraro. Someone is killing Shadow Rider couples, and Geno is about to discover the Ferraro family has been targeted. Enter ballet dancer and elite investigator Amaranthe Aubert, the woman with whom Geno will fall in love. As Amara and Geno begin investigating a series of attacks against anyone connected to the Ferraro family, our couple will discover that all is not well in the world of the Shadow Rider, past sins are about to reveal a darkness that has targeted the Ferraro family. What ensues is the building relationship between Amara and Geno, and the potential fall-out as Geno’s need to protect Amara threatens their future and their own happily ever after.

The world building continues to focus on the world of the Shadow Rider: their ability to ‘ride the shadows’, and those who are trained to serve justice when a ‘rider’ cannot be sentenced through regular law enforcement. As each member of the Ferraro finds their own happily ever after, secrets will reveal a past haunted by neglect and abuse.

The relationship between Geno and Amara is one of fated mates but Amara has been tasked with investigating the people or person’s responsible, having been lead to believe the Ferraro’s may be the key. When Geno’s ‘shadow’ entwines with our story line heroine’s, Amara knows immediately that separating from Geno could mean death to them both. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate and intense.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and powerful secondary and supporting characters including most if not all of the previous story line couples, even if just by way of mention of total involvement. We are reintroduced to Geno’s brothers Salvatore and Lucca, and Dario Bosco, a non-rider who is aware of the Shadow Rider’s existence. The requisite evil has many faces.

SHADOW DANCE is another dramatic story of family and relationships, betrayal and vengeance, power and control, fate and love. The premise is edgy, detailed, complex and dark; the romance is spirited and provocative; the characters are impassioned, desperate, powerful and determined.

She nodded, never looking away from his dark gaze. She did love his eyes. “I’m very sure. I’m not going to doubt us again.”
His smile was slow in climbing to his eyes, but when it reached them, it lit up the deep blue until her stomach began to perform loops and somersaults.
“You’re lethal to women, Geno.”
“Just to you, I promise.”
He cupped the back of her head gently and bent to brush his lips across hers, featherlight, before she could protest that she was wearing lipstick. As kisses went, it was fairly virtuous. It shouldn’t have made her heart pound like a drum out of control, but it did. He didn’t stop there. He shifted her, easily bringing her onto his lap, urging her to straddle his thighs.
Amaranthe knew better, but she couldn’t help herself. He mesmerized her. Large hands at her waist, he lifted her, and she settled one knee on either side of his thighs. His lips moved on hers again and again. Barely there. Whispering. Never hurrying. So light. Coaxing her with tenderness as if he knew everything she said was bravado. She was still afraid to go into his world with him.
Geno had kissed her with fire, but not like this. Not with tenderness. Not so she could taste raw emotion. He was giving her a gift—showing her how he felt. Her lips trembled beneath his. This was a terrifying moment even as she reveled in it. His chest was hard as it rose and fell against the softness of her breasts. His tongue slid along the seam of her lips, and her heart contracted.
I want you for myself, Danzatrice Ombra. You’re the only thing I’ve ever wanted for me. The only woman I’ve looked at and known I had to have, or it would be no one. If you turn me down, there will be no arranged marriage. No children with another rider. You are my partner, Amaranthe. I feel it with every breath I take. Feel it, too. Want me the way I want you.
He whispered poetic words like that into her mind, and she knew she would never be able to resist him. It didn’t matter that he was so far out of her league, and she had no idea how to be with a man like him, she knew she couldn’t walk away from him.
She saw his absolute resolve. He meant every word he said. His life had been dictated to him, his every path, his every breath and step. He was done with giving every aspect of his life to everyone else. He would choose his wife. The woman he would marry. If he couldn’t have the woman he loved, he would choose to be alone. She saw that determination in him. When Geno made up his mind, he was absolute steel.
I’m so afraid I’ll embarrass you, Geno. I have no idea what to do or say around these people. I don’t belong with them.
His mouth brushed across her lips again. Gently. Coaxing. So tender her stomach did a slow somersault and her sex clenched. She held herself very still, frozen in place, but the need for flight was paramount. Every inch of the front of her body was pressed tightly against him. His masculine scent enveloped her so that each time she inhaled, she took him deep into her lungs.
You don’t need to belong with them, Amara. You belong with me. I’m the one who needs you, not them. I don’t belong. Haven’t you noticed? I’m not the same as the rest of them and I make them uneasy. I’ve never minded, but I don’t want you to feel that way. I don’t want you uneasy around me.
How could he think that? Did she make him think it was him? She slid her palms up his chest and linked her fingers behind his neck, her mouth moving under his in answer.
It isn’t you I’m afraid of, Geno. I love being with you, and I’m comfortable with you. It’s the others in your world.
His teeth teased at her lower lip, tugging very gently while his palm curled around the nape of her neck and his thumb swept along her cheek.
Give yourself to me, la mia danzatrice ombra. I swear, you’ll always be safe with me. I’ll make you happy.
There was no resisting him. She didn’t even want to resist him. He was right.
I want you to know you will always come first. Always.

Review:

Resonance Surge by Nalini Singh is the 7th book in her Psy-Changeling Trinity series. As I have noted many times, Nalini Singh continues to be one of my musts read go to authors, always loving her Pys-Changeling and Guild Hunter series.  She never fails to give us fantastic stories, great couples and fabulous secondary characters; not to mention her amazing ability to make sure her continued world building is totally flawless.

We meet Theodora (Theo) Marshall, our heroine, who has been tortured as a young child, by her grandfather, who was evil; since she was considered a low- gradient Psy.  Theo has a twin brother, Pax, who with the current death of Marshall Hyde (the grandfather who separated them), assumes control of the Marshall family.  Many years had passed when Pax and Theo were separated, but now that Pax is in charge, he only trusts his twin, who is assigned to check out an unregistered rehabilitation center that their grandfather controlled, and work with the Stonewater clan to discover who is still controlling the center.

Yakov Stepyrev, our hero, has had nightmares since he was young, and now recently the nightmares have come back.  Yakov (Yasha) has been assigned by Valentin (Stonewater leader), to meet Theo Marshall, and work with her to find the answers of who is killing innocent people, as well as who is controlling the center, that was created by the deceased Marshall Hyde.  When Yasha meets Theo, he is shocked to see that she is the woman in his nightmares, and his inner bear knows she is their mate. Yasha is determined to protect Theo, as well as prove to her that she is not a monster (since her grandfather did horrible things).

Yasha and Theo arrive at the center compound, searching for clues as who is behind the what is still happening at the center.  Theo cannot remember much of what the experiments her grandfather did to her, and when she sees the site, she has a panic attack, which brings forth rages in her body.  Yasha finds a way to help her out of the attack, and in a short time, as they are always together, the attraction between is very strong; Theo begins to trust Yasha, especially since their chemistry and bond were amazing..

Pavel (Yakov’s twin ) and Arwen Mercant have been together over a few books, and their relationship has made them a great couple.  Arwen, being an E psy and the heart of the Mercant family, plays a big part in helping Theo overcome her panic attacks and open her heart to Yasha. I really like Pavel and Arwen together.  Pax, Theo’s twin, is slowly feeling his life ending soon, due to the Scarab Syndrome; which I hope will resolve in the next book.

What follows is an exciting, suspenseful, intriguing and action-packed story, with me unable to put the book down. Resonance Surge was an emotional love story between Yasha and Theo, who was damaged, with a bond that will bring them totally together. The romance between them was wonderful and I love how the Stonewater bears accepted Theo into their clan. I really enjoyed Yakov and Theo’s story.  I also loved seeing many of our previous heroes, such as, Valentine, Silver, Kaleb, Ena, Pavel, Arden, and the rest of the Stonewater Bears.

Nalini Singh once again gives us another wonderful story in Resonance Surge, which was so very well written by Nalini Singh, which has always been the norm. She never fails to captivate me with her engaging creative stories, fantastic plots, and seamless world building; wonderful couples in each and every story; super secondary characters and fantastic world-building.   I loved every moment of Resonance Surge.  As I have noted many times, if you have not read Nalini Singh, you are missing a gem of an author.
