•••••

REVIEW: CHINOOK is the sixth instalment in ML Buchman’s contemporary, adult MIRANDA CHASE NTSB military, techno-thriller series focusing on NTSB investigator Miranda Chase and her team of former and current military members.

CHINOOK follows Tasia ‘Taz’ Vicki Flores aka US Air Force Colonel Vicki ‘The Taser’ Cortez aka Tanya Roberts in the aftermath of her ‘death’ following an unsanctioned attack on four major drug cartels on the south side of the Mexican border. Believed to not have survived her last mission, six months later, Colonel Vicki Cortez re-invented herself as Tasia Flores, part of a US hotshot wildfire crew, a position that would bring her up close and personal with someone from her past. Enter Jeremy Trahn, the newest member of Miranda Chase’s NTSB investigation team, and the man Tasia would always remember. As the wildfire crew disbanded for the season, Tasia would be forced to ‘work’ with the NTSB as they began in investigation into a series of ‘accidents’ involving Chinook Helicopters, and a jet plane crash on the border of Tawain, a crash meant to start a war.

CHINOOK is an infinitely detailed and complex story line rife with military and NTSB language and jargon; a story of vengeance, betrayal, power and espionage; a tale of one woman’s struggle in the aftermath of nineteen years of service to the US Air Force, and the fall-out of who she was, and the future going forward. CHINOOK is an imaginative, riveting and edgy story of a nation on the brink of war for nefarious purposes.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 25, 2021

To whom it may concern: I quit.

Preston Michael Shaw.

PMS, as I like to call him.

I don’t need his job. I don’t need his fancy designer suits or his arrogance or his claims that I put a hex on him, because of course a strong, empowered woman needs to put a spell on a man.

As if I want him.

Pfft. He should be so lucky.

I definitely don’t need his irritating demands for caramel-coconut coffee or his fixation on being on time.

Spoiler—I’m not, ever.

I certainly don’t appreciate how his touch singes my skin. Literally.

I need to stop obsessing about him. It’s just hormones.

One roll in the silk sheets and I’ll be over him.

But we can’t sleep together until my best friend—his real assistant—comes back from vacation.

Damn his admirable morals and my flaming panties.

And now I’ve been cursed, because I can’t resist the hottest, most annoying man I’ve ever known…

Author’s note: His Temporary Assistant is a standalone office romantic comedy set in our small town Kensington Square, which is near Crescent Cove. It has a happily-ever-after ending and no cliffhanger.

•••••••

REVIEW:HIS TEMPORARY ASSISTANT is the first instalment in Taryn Quinn’s contemporary, adult KENSINGTON SQUARE erotic, romance series set in the authors’ Crescent Cove world. This is podcaster. artist and Tarot reader Ryan Moon, and divorce attorney Preston Michael Shaw’s story line.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Preston and Ryan) HIS TEMPORARY ASSISTANT follows the building romance and relationship between podcaster, artist and Tarot reader Ryan Moon, and divorce attorney Preston Michael Shaw. Preston Shaw’s assistant April was taking a week of unscheduled vacation and hired her best friend Ryan to take her place but to Preston’s shock, Ryan Moon, was a feisty, otherworldly, woman with no legal experience but a woman who stirred something deep within our story line hero. Five days together would quickly turn into something more but their rapidly building relationship would have Ryan faltering with what the Tarot cards had to say, and the possibility that she was falling in love with a man who was only a temporary stop in her life. What ensues is the quick building romance and relationship between Preston and Ryan, and the potential fall- out as Preston struggles with both his personal and professional future, and Ryan battles between head and heart as it pertains to our story line hero.

Preston Shaw likes order in his life but the surprise announcement of his assistant’s vacation pushed Preston Shaw over the proverbial edge. From the outset his first encounter with Ryan was acrimonious at best but something about Ryan drew our hero like a moth to a flame. Ryan Moon never expected to fall for her best friend’s boss, knowing he had always been a consummate professional with April but Ryan was never one to tow the line, and in this, our heroine began to push all of Preston’s proverbial buttons.

The relationship between Ryan and Preston begins as a temporary position for our story line heroine but her dependency upon the Tarot cards meant Ryan struggled with the continuing results. Believing Preston to be her future, Ryan is willing to step out of her comfort zone pulling Preston along for the ride. The $ex scenes are intimate, passionate and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic, language and text.

We are introduced to Ryan’s best friend and Preston’s PA April; her mother Rainbow Moon; Preston’s brother Dexter, their parents; and veterinarian Grant Thorne.

HIS TEMPORARY ASSISTANT is story of revelations, acceptance, relationships and love; a story of family, denial, and changes. The premise is engaging and captivating ; the characters are fun and flirty; the romance is seductive and hot.

Stormland by John Shirley-a review

STORMLAND by John Shirley-a review

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo / Google Play

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 13, 2021

They call it Stormland: a sprawling, largely abandoned region of the southeastern coast of the USA, where climate change’s extreme weather conditions have brought about a “perfect storm” of perpetual tempests; where hurricane-strength storms return day after day, 365 days a year.

The heart of Stormland is Charleston, South Carolina, a flooded ruin where hundreds of people remain for their own peculiar reasons; where thugs prey on the weak, and a strangely benevolent cult tries to keep everyone insanely sane. Here, plutocratic evil takes advantage of Stormland’s lawlessness to cultivate a weirdly puppeted theater of cruelty.

Swept into the turbulent vortex of Stormland is an unlikely duo—a former serial killer and a former US Marshal—who must work together to bring light to America’s late twenty-first century heart of darkness.

A cyberpunk detective thriller set in a maelstrom of climatic upheaval, classism, and corrupt power, Stormland paradoxically dramatizes the resilience of the human spirit.

••••••••

REVIEW:  STORMLAND by John Shirley is an adult,  near-future, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk detective thriller set in the year 2039.

Told from third person perspective following several intersecting paths STORMLAND focuses on what was once Charleston, South Carolina and the eastern seaboard of the USA. An environmental apocalypse has rendered the eastern seaboard inhospitable and mostly under water as daily hurricanes and storms ravage the shores and the remaining few who are willing to fight but those who remain behind are caught up in a game controlled by the rich and powerful, leaving a trail of dead bodies in their wake. Enter former US Marshall Darryl Webb, who has been tasked with returning an escaped serial killer, a killer who is unlike anyone Darryl has ever met. As the number of bodies increase, Webb and his Stormland counterpart Gerald, begin to notice a pattern, including a physical injury between the victims.

STORMLAND is a story of power and control; of manipulation and murder; of nano-technology and mind control. John Shirley pulls the reader into a dark, edgy world of constant storms, and haunting virtual realities. The tragic few who remain struggle to survive against the odds, odds that worsen as technology, designer synthetic drugs, and the collapse of the city begin to take its’ toll. The character driven premise though provoking, gritty and edgy; the characters are tragic, desperate and wounded.

REVIEW:CRUCIBLE OF FEAR by D. W. Whitlock is a near-future, sci-if, techno thriller focusing on thirty-something advertising executive Dante Ellis, and the carnage that is about to become his life.

Told from third person perspective following several intersecting paths CRUCIBLE OF FEAR focuses on artificial intelligence, and organized groups of cyber hackers out to prove they have the ability to control whatever and whomever they want. A futuristic world of camera drones that record and spy, using the recorded booty for blackmail and more, advertising executive Dante Ellis finds himself the ultimate target of betrayal and revenge, never knowing the who, what or why, until the very end. With not only his life, but the life of his daughter now the focus of a group or entity calling itself the Dark Messiah, Dante is on his own when he discovers that the people meant to help have been compromised by the very entity targeting our story line hero.

CRUCIBLE OF FEAR has many similarities to the television show Mr. Robot™. In Whitlock’s world the cyber hackers take aim at several people in an effort to produce enough fear to obey their commands but the ultimate target is Dante Ellis, a man whose past and present is about to implode.

D. W. Whitlock pulls the reader into a complex scenario of cyber crimes, hackers, AI, and computers; a world that resonates with what is, and what could be, but a world where our entire existence can be destroyed by the stroke of a key. A thrilling, suspenseful and intriguing story, CRUCIBLE OF FEAR begins with a bang, then builds slowly revealing the interconnected pathways and characters, ending with the possibility of so much more.

The Idea

Some writers say it’s not what you write about, but how you write it. This approach tends to be more popular in literary fiction where the stories center around a character or characters reacting and dealing with a trauma. But for commercial fiction, writers such as Preston & Child, James Rollins and Michael Crichton have built their stories around a core idea that the believability of the entire story hinges on. Would Jurassic Park exist without its key conceit? I find the tried-and-true what if question is a good place to start for both analyzing existing stories, and the fun part, creating new ones.

What if…dinosaurs were alive today? Interesting question, but one that had already been asked and answered by Arthur Conan Doyle in his seminal work, The Lost World, all the way back in 1912! That story put dinosaurs on a raised plateau in South America, cut off from the rest of the world, safe from extinction. Plausible in 1912, a world still traveling by ship and rail on the cusp of flight, laughable in the technologically advanced and interconnected world of the 90s. Let’s start again with the what if, and expand upon it with the follow up, but how?

What if dinosaurs were alive today? What if we had access to their DNA? But how?

I remember reading Jurassic Park for the first time. That moment in the book when Crichton reveals how it was done was electric for me. As a life-long dinosaur nut and Crichton fan, I was already in. But how did this technological miracle happen? The planting of the ideas was there, the Chekov’s gun cleverly disguised as a series of questions: Why was Ingen, a genetic research corporation, stockpiling amber? Why were small dinosaurs, at first misidentified by experts as mere lizards, suddenly attacking children along coastal towns in Costa Rica? How had Ingen’s scientists achieved the impossible, the resurrection of extinct animals from Earth’s distant past?

DNA extracted from the blood of mosquitoes trapped in amber after feeding on dinosaurs over sixty-five million years ago.

It was an impossible, yet plausible idea, one that answered the what if in such a profound and clever way, that for this reader, the story shot home. At that point, I was bought in, disbelief suspended, prepared for the ride of my life.

I was not disappointed. Along with many, many other readers. From what I understand, the movie did pretty okay too.

So, what is the answer then? Is the idea itself important? According to John Truby, author of Anatomy of Story, he would say it’s at the very core of the process itself. He cautions writers to take their time with what they choose to write about, tap into their passions, aligned with what readers want to actually read. So, choose wisely. Take your time. Write something that will change the world, Truby says. Lofty ambitions, but why not shoot for the stars? The reality is, as an author, you’re going to spend years of your life with what you choose to write about. Planning, writing, editing, pitching, selling, interviews, sequels or series. Making sure your story is worthy of a commitment longer than most marriages is sound advice.

And what about me? What do I think? I believe that a story premise starts with the what if, and ends with the how. I believe the core idea of how something is, or has come to be, can be just as compelling and interesting as the what if itself.

It’s a personal decision, what to write about. For some, how you write it, the prose, the voice, is enough. But for me, the how can elevate the what if from the mere genesis of a story to an idea that can resonate across decades and thrill readers for years to come. And quite possibly, bring dinosaurs back into the world, if only in our collective imaginations.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date: April 7, 2021

Roses Are Red
Violets Are Blue
I hold the aces,
The loser is you.

My name is Rose, and I have a gift—call it a supreme “intuition.”

I’m the last one people suspect of cheating, but a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do. Cards are my game, and Vegas is my playground. What I’m doing might bend the law a little, but I dare them to prove it.

Storm Montgomery thinks he’s got my number. He’s bound and determined to stop me. He insists I’m going to get caught. Fat chance.

Except he might be right, because now I’m running for my life and he’s the only one who can save me.

Welcome to Nursery Crimes, where tales are twisted and happily ever after’s are not always guaranteed…

•••••••

REVIEW:ROSES ARE RED by Kristine Allen is volume seven in the contemporary, adult HEELS, RHYMES AND NURSERY CRIMES multi-authored, erotic, romance series. This is thirty-year old, billionaire Storm Montgomery, and twenty-three year old, card shark Rose Kristiansen’s story line. ROSES ARE RED can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Some of the characters from the author’s Royal Bastards MC series cross over for cohesion and familiarity.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Storm and Rose) ROSES ARE RED follows Rose Kristiansen as the tangles with the big players in Las Vegas, Nevada. A one night stand with billionaire Storm Montgomery finds our heroine skipping town only to find herself, months later, the target of the Russian mob. Desperate for help, Rose contacts Storm Montgomery, her one-night stand from months earlier. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Storm and Rose, and the fall-out as the target on Rose demands payback and more.

The relationship between Storm and Rose begins as a one-night stand wherein our heroine disappears the next morning but is never forgotten by Storm Montgomery. With a target on her back, Rose is desperate when she reaches out to Storm, a reconnection that will reveal so much more. The $ex scenes are intimate and erotic but I dislike the use of a certain four-letter word.

ROSES ARE RED is a story of obsession, power, money and control. Kristine Allen pulls the reader into a slightly paranormal novella wherein our heroine’s abilities help her to win against the odds but winning places her in the direct line of fire, and the Russian mob is demanding payback in full. The fast paced, character driven premise is intriguing and engaging;the romance is seductive; the characters are animated and dynamic.

THE RANCHER
The McAllister Brothers 1
by Julia Justiss
Release Date: April 8, 2021
Genre: adult, contemporary, romance

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo / Google Play

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 8, 2021

When he sets out to regain his family’s heritage, he never expects to fall in love.

Cowboy Duncan McAllister has worked tirelessly to make the family ranch profitable enough to buy back the section of land hard times forced them to sell a decade ago. When the owner of that land unexpectedly dies, leaving the ranch to his city-based daughter, Duncan finally sees his opportunity.

After her business partner boyfriend runs off with an intern—and all their clients—CPA Harrison Scott retreats to her Daddy’s Hill Country ranch to decide her next move. Her father’s sudden death leaves her floundering—does she rebuild her professional career or carry on the ranch he loved? After rebuffing Duncan’s offer to buy her out, Harrison is forced to turn to her handsome neighbor to learn the ropes of ranching.

Duncan tells himself he’s just being neighborly, but their immediate attraction soon deepens. How can he convince her that he wants her even more than his beloved land when she’s already been betrayed once before?

••••••••

REVIEW:Duncan is the oldest of the McAllister siblings, he’s worked the land his family has owned for as long as he can remember, and finally things are going his way, the land that use to belong to them is almost within reach, then in one sweep all his dreams come crashing down! How can he fulfil a promise he made to get back the land his stepmother had sold?

Harrison has had enough, losing her business partner/boyfriend was bad enough, but to find out he took clients and stole money was the last straw. Going home to lick her wounds seems like the best course of action. Then to add salt into the wound, she loses her father to a heart attack!

It’s not exactly love at first sight for Harrison and Duncan. They’ve known of each other for the last ten years, but not had an awful lot to do with one another. But losing her father has Duncan feeling sorry for her, he lost his own father and knew how close Harrison was to her dad. He comes to make an offer for the land that was sold to Harrison’s father. He goes away angry and empty handed! But over time they come to an understanding, and when Harrison needs help she turns to her neighbour. Spending time in such close proximity has them both taking another look at one another in a different light.

The first book in a trilogy of McAllister brothers.

Beautifully written, you could imagine yourself riding out and viewing the magnificent countryside. Seeing all those bluebonnets and watching as the cattle graze. The scenes just came to life through the authors writing. Duncan wasn’t really making me smile at first, he gave me the impression of an arrogant landowner, yes his family might have owned all the land, but he gave off a entitled vibe!!

Harrison I really liked and felt so sorry for. Being taken for a mug by the boyfriend was bad enough, losing him as a business partner stung, all that she could cope with as long as she had her father to give her love and support. So when she loses him, your heart just breaks. I did like how they worked together, the snarky comments and witty comebacks.

So can Duncan really show the woman he’s fallen for how much she means to him? Or will the past get in the way of Harrison really trusting Duncan?

A really good read, and one I’d recommend happily.

And now I’m eager to read the next book in this trilogy……

Deep River Promise (Alaska Homecoming 2) by Jackie Ashenden -a review

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo / Google Play

Welcome to Deep River, Alaska

Damon Fitzgerald’s only desire is to get back to LA and out of the tiny Alaskan town he’s somehow inherited. But first he has to keep a promise he made to his old army buddy and look out for his friend’s son. That would be a whole lot easier if the kid’s mother wasn’t the mayor of Deep River…

Astrid James didn’t ask to be mayor of Deep River but since she is, she intends to do right by the town and her son. The last thing she needs is an arrogant outsider coming in and taking charge, no matter how attractive he is. But when Astrid starts to realize that Damon is more than just a pretty face, she’ll have to decide whether she can risk her heart and her son’s happiness on a man who’s mission is to leave Deep River.

•••••••

REVIEW:DEEP RIVER PROMISE is the second instalment in Jackie Ashenden’s contemporary, adult ALASKA HOMECOMING romance series focusing on three friends who inherited the small town of Deep River, Alaska when their best friend died in a place crash. This is bush pilot Damon Fitzgerald, and Deep River Mayor and librarian Astrid James’ story line. DEEP RIVER PROMISE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalment is revealed where necessary.

SOME BACKGROUND: Thirteen years earlier Silas Quinn (Home to Deep River 1), along with his best friend Caleb West, swore never to return to Deep River but with Caleb’s death came the ownership of the town of Deep River, owned by the West family for close to one hundred years, now passed on to our hero Damon, and his friends Silas and Zeke.

Told from dual third person perspective (Damon and Astrid) DEEP RIVER PROMISE follows Damon Fitzgerald as he endeavors to come to terms with partial ownership of the small town of Deep River, Alaska but Deep River sits on a field of oil, a field of which the Big Oil companies are hoping to own. In an effort to strengthen the town, and bring in some much need tourism and money, Damon Fitzgerald, along with his best friend Silas Quinn, and the town’s Mayor Astrid James, begin to ferret out a number of possibilities but Damon never expected to lose his heart to the town and the woman with whom he would fall in love. What ensues is the quick building romance and relationship between Astrid and Damon, and the potential fall-out as Damon struggles with demons from the past, and an ailing mother back home in Los Angeles, California.

Astrid James is a single mother to thirteen year old Connor James but Astrid’s secret is about to be exposed with the arrival of Damon Fitzgerald, a man who stirs something deep within our story line heroine. Having loved and lost, and loved and lost again, Astrid ‘ran’ to Deep River, Alaska, a town with too many memories but a town that has accepted Astrid, and the boy that she loves. Damon Fitzgerald never wanted to own Deep River, Alaska, and is preparing to walk away once a plan has been put into action to save a town that meant much to his former best friend but Damon never expected to meet a feisty, single mother, a woman who isn’t afraid to call Damon out on his excuses and fears. After his death, Caleb’s request meant Damon had a responsibility, a responsibility that now included Astrid and her fifteen year old son, Connor.

The relationship between Damon and Astrid is one of immediate attraction but Damon’s time in Deep River comes with an expiry date, and Damon refuses to hang around for the long haul. Falling in love was never on the agenda but Astrid, and her son Connor, made it difficult for Damon to walk away. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are reintroduced to Silas Quinn and his girlfriend Hope Dawson; Astrid’s son Connor; Caleb’s sister Morgan West; as well as ferry operator Kevin Anderson; general store owner Malcolm Cooper; tourism operator Sandy; and wannabe luxury motel owner Mike Flint. Zeke and Morgan’s story line is next.

DEEP RIVER PROMISE is a story of family, betrayal, loss and love; a story of survival and reflection; promises and happily ever after. The premise is inspiring; the romance is spirited and heart breaking; the characters are sassy, determined and lost.
