Heart of a DoveAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
The Civil War has ended, leaving the country with a gaping wound. Lorie Blake, a southern orphan sold into prostitution at fifteen, has carefully guarded her aching soul from the disgrace forced upon her every evening. Two years have passed, leaving her with little hope of anything more. Meanwhile, three men – longtime friends – and a young boy with a heart of gold are traveling northward, planning to rebuild their lives in the north and leave behind the horrors of their time as soldiers in the Confederate Army.

Fate, however, has plans of its own, causing their lives to collide in a river town whorehouse. Forced to flee, Lorie escapes and joins them on the journey north. But danger stalks them all in the form of a vindictive whorehouse madam and an ex-Union soldier, insane and bent on exacting revenge. At last, Lorie must come to terms with her past and devastating secrets that she cannot yet bear to reveal.

Heart of a Dove is the first book in a gripping, sweeping romantic saga of pain, unbearable choices, loss and true love set against the backdrop of a scarred, post-Civil War America.

Review:

Heart of a Dove is a historical but romantic telling of life after the Civil War, yet it is so much more than that.

After the Civil War ended there was a generation of men returning to homes that were either no longer there or had been irreparably changed by the war and life. Many families had to deal with life after their brothers, sons, fathers, uncles and others had given their lives to a cause that was unrealized. Many of these families fought for something nobler than the ability to hold slaves, in fact many of those on the losing side did not believe in slavery but in other things that were at stake. While the men were away at war, life for the women was no better and sometimes so much worse.

This is the world author Abbie Williams takes us to. It could and often was a brutal and barbaric time for those unable to defend themselves. However, even in this time, love finds a way to bloom and grow.

I don’t want to spoil this marvelous tale for you by giving you too much detail, so let me just give you the circumstances of interest. A lovely Tennessee girl of very good family is left orphaned and in the care of neighbors, who did not care. Her life was a living hell…

When all seems lost enter three men traveling to a new home in the West. Three handsome strong and honorable men, who found something in common, her father. One takes her into his care and promises to honor and care for her. She travels west with them and one twelve year old boy, who she begins to love like she did her brothers who died.

While traveling, she falls in love with one of the younger men, and he with her. There is a small touch of the fey in this relationship. They seem to be fated to be together. The man who offered to take care of her is also in love with her. The third man, loves his friends and wants her happiness like a sister.

Okay, that’s the setup and I’ve purposefully left out the incredible details. To give away more would dampen the wonderful descriptive narrative of this marvelous tale. Ms. Williams’ writing flows smoothly, actually making you feel the emotions, terror, and despair as well as the beauty and love fighting for survival.

The only criticism I can offer is that she may have tried too hard to convince me of the couple’s overwhelming love…I got it right away. This did not distract from the story for me.

Can the situation be worked out, or will this tear the three friends apart forever? How this story and fate contrive to make this all come about is a marvelous display of storytelling, one which I’m looking forward to seeing again in the next installment of tales by this wonderful new (at least for me) author.

Grab you favorite treats, some tissues, something soft you can pound things with…LOL. Enjoy this great story. I certainly did.

The Magnate’s Manifesto by Jennifer Hayward – a Review

The Magnate’s Manifesto by Jennifer Hayward – a Review

The Magnate's ManifestoAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
Jared Stone: Visionary, rebel, the tech world’s golden boy…and now the most hated man on the planet!

Bailey St. James: Survivor, powerful female executive, the only woman who refuses to bow down to Jared Stone…and the only woman who can save him?

When Jared’s manifesto makes him public enemy #1 the only way out is to make Bailey an offer she can’t refuse—a very public promotion to VP! Now, with a major deal on the line and tensions rising, can it be long before Jared and Bailey move from spreadsheets to bed sheets?

Review:

Jared Stone doesn’t have a high opinion of women in the workplace. And, when his “manifesto” was leaked to the press, his world was turned upside down overnight. As his blurb says, he’s a force to be reckoned with, until a board member with an agenda of his own, leaks the email. Let the rebuilding begin…………

Bailey St. James knows that she should have been promoted over a male coworker, but she keeps plugging away. She’s worked hard to get where she is and she is bound and determined to climb the corporate ladder……… Until she reads the said manifesto and sees red. Once she arrives at the office, she is summoned to Jared’s office and is ready to hand in her resignation when she learns that Jared is offering her the promotion she’s been dreaming of. She knows down to her toes he’s doing it to show the world that he’s not the pompous, chauvinistic pig that the world now thinks he is, but she can’t refuse the promotion as she knows that she can show Jared just how valuable an asset she will be to the company and ultimately prove him wrong.

They almost immediately leave for France to meet with the owners and representatives of a company that Jared is wanting to partner with that will set the tech world on its ear. IF they can tie up this deal, it’ll be huge. As things get rolling, Jared, almost reluctantly, sees that Bailey St. James is more than he thought. She charms everyone she comes in contact with, including him. But, once Bailey’s past comes out and could threaten the entire deal, will Jared be able to completely trust her to complete the deal? And, when his past is revealed (which explains why he thinks of women the way he does), will Bailey be able to crack his icy façade? You’ll just have to read to find out, and what a read it is……

This is the first book I’ve read by Jennifer Hayward, but it won’t be the last. Jared Stone started out as a first class butthead, but when you find out what has shaped his view of women, you can’t help but feel for him. You will ultimately root for him as well! And, when Bailey’s past comes out?! Wow! You will instantly love her. She has literally built herself from the ground up, and is such a strong and believable character , that you will absolutely fall in love with her. Hayward’s world building was spot on as well. And, for you who have an aversion to “instalove” (is that a word??), this one is for you. Even though they are both attractive, it takes a minute for the actual emotional attraction to build. The Magnate’s Manifesto is ultimately about coming to terms with one’s past and knowing that we are all, at one time or another, guilty of letting our past shape the way we see others, and ourselves. Well done, Jennifer Hayward, very well done.

•••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: DAMAGE DONE is the third storyline in M.J. Schiller’s adult, contemporary Real Romance Collections series. Each book is a stand alone novel, not connected or interconnected to any of the previous storylines. Damage Done is the story of one family / two men-Teddy Passmore McKee and his son Michael Patrick McKee. The storyline covers approximately fifty years starting in 1960 to the present, when a then five year old Teddy McKee discovered life was never going to be easy.

Set in Ireland, DAMAGE DONE looks at choices made and the damage done when these choices result in heartbreak, destruction and death. We follow Teddy McKee from a young boy with a physical handicap whose earlier years have left him jaded and without the support of family and friends. Meeting Sean Hennessey will start a twelve year old Teddy on a downward spiral that does not stop for close to fifty years resulting in the breakup of his family, the loss of his freedom and a blight on the next generation. The sins of the father will destroy everything and everyone that comes in contact with Teddy McKee.

Told from third person point of view, DAMAGE DONE is a romantic narrative but not necessarily a tale of romance and love. It is a story about two men whose choices in life have affected the places and people that they meet. It is a story of passion, pain, forgiveness and hope but also a story that does not delve too deeply into the mind or the emotions of the leading characters.

The world building focuses on one family’s choices and the people they meet along the way. The secondary characters are colorful and drive a good portion of the story-in other words these characters set into motion the choices that will affect both Teddy and his son.

MJ Schiller’s DAMAGE DONE is an intriguing look at the ‘damage done’ or ‘the snowball affect’ of one man’s choices and another man’s sins.

guest post

Good morning! I am so glad to be back at The Reading Café talking about my latest release, DAMAGE DONE, an Irish romantic suspense. It may seem a little different for me, as the majority of my books are rock star romances, but it actually is similar in a lot of ways to my other romances. For one, I never stray too far from music. Michael is not a rock star—not by a long shot—but he is a musician, and a talented one. He plays rock music, but on the local level. Perhaps he hasn’t been discovered yet. (Hmm…do I see a sequel in the works?)

So why did I choose to write Michael and Tess’s story in the first place? It all began with the line, “Even through bloodshot eyes he could tell she was different.” That line kept playing over and over in my head until I was forced to explore it. Who is “he?” Why are his eyes bloodshot, and what makes “her” different? I decided the bloodshot eyes were from late hours, drinking and womanizing. (Maybe he’s a rock star after all!) But why? Why is he living his life this way?

That’s where the idea of DAMAGE DONE came into play. We all suffer our damages, just in different ways. You know what I mean? Those childhood scars that never quite seem to leave us. For example, growing up in an abusive home, like my character Chad Evans from TRAPPED UNDER ICE. Those sorts of experiences, especially in our formative years, leave a mark on us. Permanently change us, and it is up to us to rise above those circumstances, to adjust, to heal. Sometimes it takes meeting the right person to make us want to change and improve ourselves. For Michael, that is Tess. Tess has had her own damage done to her. Together Michael and Tess help each other to open up and trust again and a wonderful, lasting romance begins.

I’ve always been drawn to this idea of two people who have been hurt before mending each other, becoming each other’s salvation. Such a powerful thought! And it’s not good enough for only one of them to need the other, it needs to be a joint union of broken hearts that makes for one indestructible love. Sigh. I love my job! Okay. Enough of my blabbering. Why don’t I tell you a little bit more about DAMAGE DONE.

When an unhappy youth leaves him damaged, will Teddy Mckee be able to find love?

excerpt

“Tessie…” He offered again. “We have to get out of here.”
She remained frozen in her spot, staring blindly over the cliff. He moved a step closer and gently grasped her elbow. “Tess—”
She whirled around and his heart caught in his chest as he stared into her wild green eyes. Tears shone on her damp cheeks, glimmering in the moonlight like trails of scattered diamonds. “Nay, Michael,” she said, her words coming out choked. “I have to tell them the truth. It’s my fault. …I k-killed him.” She sobbed.
He looked at her sadly, begging her, “Let me help you.”
The back door creaked open and light spilled out from the bar across the grass, startling them. He saw Jimmy Flynn’s outline in the doorway. “They’re out here!” he yelled.
Without waiting for a response, Michael took Tess’s arm and steered her along the cliff’s edge. He stepped over the railing and helped her to the other side as well. They stood on a narrow ledge. To the left a trail dropped off toward the sea. He led her skittering down the path, loose rock pebbling the beach far below. He had taken the pathway many a night when he was drunk and feeling particularly reckless. Tonight he hurried over it with only self-preservation and Tess’s safety in mind.
They heard voices above them, coming from every direction as searchers fanned out along the top of the cliff. Their eyes met. They hardly dared to breathe. A flashlight beam ventured over the railing and along the cliff face. She clutched his hand, squeezing it until he lost feeling in his fingers. He tried to flatten himself even more tightly against the rock face, wishing it would somehow melt and absorb them. Several seconds passed and the beam of light was joined by another, and another, each swinging away, and then toward them again.
He grabbed a quick look at the churning sea below then closed his eyes for a second, and his stomach dropped. He took a deep breath before turning his head to look at Tess. Her eyes were closed and her lips were moving fervently, but she emitted no sound. He swallowed, wondering again why the sight of her affected him so. After several minutes a voice called out, “You won’t get away with this, Mikey.” Had someone seen them? He heard Jimmy Flynn mutter, “Wherever they are, we won’t find them tonight.” One by one the lights disappeared until only a solitary beam shone.

The Shadows of Stormclyffe Hall by Lauren Smith – a Review

The Shadows of Stormclyffe Hall by Lauren Smith – a Review

The Shadows of Stormclyffe HallAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM

Description:
To defeat a dark evil, they must face his family’s past…

Bastian Carlisle, the Earl of Weymouth, doesn’t believe in ghosts. Even though tragedy and mysterious hauntings have driven his family away from his ancestral home, Stormclyffe Hall, he is determined to restore the castle to its former glory. His plans are disrupted when a stubborn American shows up on his doorstep hoping to pry into his family’s tragic history.

Jane Seyton, an American graduate student, is convinced there’s more to the tragedy of Stormclyffe Hall than history claims. Ever the scholar, she is determined to discover the truth, even if it means putting up with the arrogant, yet sexy, Bastian.

Although Bastian wants nothing to do with the pushy American, it soon becomes clear that something evil is in the house—and that something is targeting both Jane and Bastian. The two must join forces to purge the ghosts of Stormclyffe Hall once and for all—even as they try to fight a physical attraction between them that grows more and more impossible to deny.

Review:

I had the pleasure of reading THE SHADOWS OF STORMCLYFFE HALL by Lauren Smith on a dark and stormy night. Lightning and thunder booming overhead greatly enhanced this reading experience! I would classify this novel as a modern gothic novel on par with the greats!

Bastian Carlisle, the Earl of Weymouth has returned to his family’s castle to restore it, even though the castle has only seen tragedy for the past two hundred years. Jane Seyton, an American graduate student has shown up on the castle’s doorsteps to finish her doctoral dissertation. She doesn’t admit to the arrogant Brit that she has been having nightmares about the castle for years.

Together, Bastian and Anya learn the secrets behind the evil that lurks in the hallways and the ghosts that appear to each of them! Bastian tries to make Jane leave, to protect her and his heart, but the castle needs both of them to defeat the curse.

I won’t give away too many spoilers, because everyone needs to experience the hair rising on their necks for themselves! I am a fan of this author and I love a good scare, but I have to say, I’m still questioning every noise I hear in the dark now! This novel is for the reader who loves the paranormal mixed with a hot romance!

A Seductive Melody
The Kelly Brothers – Book #5
by Crista McHugh
Release Date: September 15,  2014

a Seductive MelodyAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

Description:
She has the scoop of a lifetime, but only if she betrays his trust…

Ethan Kelly lost his best friend and bandmate to an overdose, but staying clean is proving harder than he thought it would be. His only safety net during his first weeks of sobriety is fellow recovering addict, Becca. As she guides him through the darkness, he begins to trust her not only with his secrets, but also his heart.

After years of trying to be the daughter her socialite parents wanted her to be (and failing miserably), Rebecca Shore finally has her life on track. Sure, she’s just an assistant at Moderne magazine when she’d rather be pursuing more serious journalism, but it’s a foot in the door. She’s just waiting for the scoop of a lifetime that will take her to the next level. But when she’s asked to help the reclusive and enigmatic rock star, her heart is torn between the career she’s always wanted and the man who bares his soul to her.

Review:

A Seductive Melody begins with Ethan struggling with the death of his best friend, and struggling with his own sobriety. And, in typical Kelly fashion, his family tries to be there for him, but he keeps pushing them away. He finally assures them that he is committed to staying clean and goes to a meeting. But when he meets his sponsor, he can’t help but think this girl would have no idea what being a junkie would be like. He truly has no clue…………

When Becca is asked to be Ethan’s sponsor, she can’t help but notice how hot he is, and how lost he looks. She knows better than most the long road to recovery. After having embarrassed her family, and herself, one time too many, she decided to get serious about her own sobriety and pursue a career in journalism. In the beginning, she and Ethan keep things light as she tries to help him stay clean. But soon enough, she realizes that “light” won’t work with him. And, wouldn’t you know it? They are extremely attracted to each other…. 😉

Ethan and Becca begin to navigate a relationship, which is difficult enough for two recovering addicts. Add to it Becca’s realization that Ethan is a rock star and Ethan’s trust issues, and you’re in for one hell of a ride. Oh, and on top of all of that, Becca’s dad is a bazillionaire jerkwad, who has all but cut her off, doesn’t have a clue who Ethan is and accuses him of being after Becca’s trust fund at Thanksgiving dinner. Yippee…………. Throw in a HUGE misunderstanding between Ethan and Becca just as they are becoming more comfortable with each other and, well, you get the picture.

A Seductive Melody is a wonderfully written story about two people dealing with their own demons, as well as each other’s. Ethan is an awesome guy with a huge heart who is struggling with not only losing his best friend, but also with losing his ability to write music. Becca is a sweet, caring soul who has made it her mission to not only keep herself clean, but to inspire Ethan to stay clean as well. There is always going to be temptation, but can these two beat the odds and inspire each other? Well, good people, you’ll have to read and find out. A Seductive Melody is ultimately about conquering one’s demons and finding redemption when all was thought to be lost. I’ll end this review by saying what I normally say at the end of a review for one of Crista’s books…..If you’re not reading the stories she’s telling, you’re seriously missing out. Well done, Crista McHugh, very very very well done!

Changing Constantinou’s Game by Jennifer Hayward – Review, Guest Post & Giveaway

Changing Constantinou's Game Banner

Changing Constantinou's GameAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository

Description:
Alexios Constantinou is notorious for his lethal charm, so when the exquisite Isabel Peters is—literally—dropped into his lap during a hellish elevator ride, he doesn’t waste the opportunity! With tensions sky-high after their near-death experience, an insatiable desire ignites between them, and all bets are off.

But when Alex discovers that reporter Isabel’s next story is him, he’s furious…yet determined to use it to his advantage. He’s calling the shots, but the closer Isabel gets, the closer she comes to discovering his carefully concealed secret. Now, with everything at stake, he’ll need a whole new game plan….

Review:

Wow!! CHANGING COSTANTINOU’S GAME by Jennifer Hayward starts out with a BANG or should I say a loud thump!!

Our elusive millionaire, Alex gets trapped in an elevator with Izzie, our tenacious reporter. Neither knows who the other is, so this trapped confinement lets them lower their guards. Alex discovers that Izzie keeps a drugstore in her purse (who doesn’t?) and her love of “smutty novels”. She makes him smile, due to her quirkiness and genuine fear of elevators. What starts out as a near death experience develops into a night of “no strings attached”!!

Wait, you didn’t think things would be that easy? Alex figures out that Izzie was sent to interview him and he feels betrayed. Both characters have major trust issues and while Izzie sits on her story, things still get complicated. This is a story of ambition, hidden secrets and most of all building trust. This novel does not follow a predictable format. There are many surprises along the way!

I have not read any of Jennifer’s other novels, but I am a new fan. Her writing is effortless and her characters soon wrap you around their fingers. Both characters are so endearing in different ways and their relationship is hot! This novel is a must read for the contemporary romance lover! I have to admit, I even shed a few happy tears at the end! Enjoy!

Shining A Light On The Elusive Alpha Hero

Alpha heroes – oh how we love them! They command and seduce us. Sweep us off into passionate tales. Stride into our pages like the larger-than-life figures they are and make us wonder why we haven’t met one at a cocktail party yet. I mean we’ve been getting out there right?

But as compelling as they are, many writers say they find the alpha male difficult to write. That that type of character just doesn’t come naturally to them. So I thought I’d tackle the subject of our sexy, scintillating alpha in this post.

I’ve been lucky in that I’ve been surrounded by alphas my entire life. First my father, an alpha surgeon, then in my career in PR where I worked with charismatic CEOs on a daily basis. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, one thing’s for sure – an alpha might be wrong, but he’s never uncertain. He is grounded in the fact that he is master of his domain and he commands it all with a firm, confident hand. In fact, there’s nothing in the world an alpha’s powerful authority and money can’t buy, except as we say in Presents land, “the love of a woman strong enough to tame him!”

So where do you find inspiration for an alpha if you don’t have one close by to study? How do you incorporate those key characteristics that make an alpha irresistible yet incorrigible all at the same time? I think of our modern-day superheroes. They all have something about them that elevates them to a level above the ordinary man. Spiderman spins his webs, Superman has his superhuman power, Aquaman can breathe under water and command the sea. Formidable? Yes. Yet all of these superheroes also have the necessary hubris that puts them in jeopardy, flaws that test their superiority. And this is what causes their problems.

If channelling a superhero is too far out for you, then think of the globe’s most powerful CEOs. Would Steve Jobs have forgotten to read a report before going into a meeting, taken no for an answer on a deal or let a competitor get in the way? I think not J He was brilliant, uncompromising and unafraid to trumpet a vision he had for what the consumer electronics industry should look like. He was, in essence, extraordinary.

For my current release, Changing Constantinou’s Game, I chose as my alpha, Alexios Constantinou, a legendary football quarterback who set the world on fire with his pro debut. A big lover of sports, I think quarterbacks are the biggest alpha of them all. How else would you step on a field and command a team of big, macho personalities with adrenalin racing through their veins? How else would you step on the field knowing at the end of the game you’ll either be a hero or the player everyone points the finger of failure at? (Not always, but you get what I mean). You have to have a certain ego to be a quarterback, you have to think you’re better than the rest. But despite being brilliant on the field, Alexios, like every alpha, has flaws that bring about his destruction. He is a wounded warrior who has never gotten over the loss of his identity when an injury ended his career. He prefers to ignore his pain and let it tear him apart inside rather than face it and move on. But the love of a good woman in my heroine Izzie might just bring him back from the darkness.

I’d love to know what you think makes an ideal alpha hero. What do you love most about them? And maybe a favourite or two?

Thanks for having me at The Reading Café! I’ve so enjoyed being here.

Shelter Me by Catherine Mann – a Review

Shelter Me by Catherine Mann – a Review

Shelter MeAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository

Description:
Nestled in the sunny fields of Tennessee lies the McDaniel family’s Second Chance Ranch Animal Rescue. Two new arrivals are on their way, but only one is the four-legged kind.

Staff Sergeant Mike Kowalski wants only one thing after he gets home from Iraq: to sleep in a king-sized bed with clean sheets. But first, he has to hand off his fallen commander’s dog, Trooper, to his family without handing off his heart to Sierra…

Sierra McDaniel needs a break. Her family life is crazy, and when she’s not mucking out kennels, she’s slogging through grad school. Sierra certainly doesn’t want another dog, especially one that reminds her of her father. And she definitely doesn’t want to see Mike with that charming smile of his…

But Trooper has a mission of his own. Before too long Mike is moving to the ranch to lend a hand—and hoping for his own second chance with Sierra.

Review:

Shelter Me by Catherine Mann is the first book in her new Second Chance Ranch series. I have been really enjoying these romances that take place in small towns, and if they have animals as part of the story, that makes it even better. Shelter Me hooked me early on as it was a sweet heartwarming story of a family trying to recover from a tragedy in Iraq, of a soldier who comes home to renewed feelings for his ex-girlfriend, and a dog, who is determined to take care of his new family. What is not to love?

Sergeant Mike Kowalski is coming home from Iraq, and he is bringing with him, Trooper, his late commanding officer’s dog. The McDaniel family is waiting for him, as was Sierra, the girl he left behind. Sierra is our heroine, and she knows Mike has had a hard time dealing with her father’s death, as her family has. But she does not want to become involved with him. Sierra still has feelings for Mike, but she doesn’t want to get hurt again, and Mike will not stay too long. He plans on becoming a career Army man, much like her father was, something she wants nothing to be part of.

Trooper is one of the stars of this story, and it was really cute to have some small parts where Trooper talked to us. Trooper gives them all a run for it, but of course they don’t know he is trying to bring them together. Some very funny parts. Nicely done.

This is a wonderful story, with the McDaniel family at the center of it all. Lacey is the mother, who runs Second Chance Ranch Animal Rescue, and she has her hands full. She is having a hard time trying to recover from her husband’s death; trying to help her 15 year old son from his withdrawal and rebellion; taking care of her father in-law, who is becoming deeper into dementia. Sierra is the only one able to help her mother, as she is also trying to finish grad school. The ranch is overrun with rescue animals, whom they put with permanent and foster homes, only to continue to rescue more at a pace they can’t keep up with. But the town loves Lacey and what she does to help all rescue animals.

Enter into this mix, Mike, who wants nothing better then to give the McDaniel’s Trooper and go home to sleep. Best laid plans do not always happen, as Trooper has other ideas. Mike eventually will stay at the Ranch to help the McDaniel’s fix up the Ranch, and doing so, he renews his own feelings for Sierra. This was a very hot sexy romance between Mike and Sierra, and believe me when I say their scenes could have melted my kindle. Though the future for them seemed slim, we found ourselves rooting for them.

The romance was part of this fabulous story, which pulled on many of our emotions. You are part of the McDaniel family all the way, and you feel their sadness, frustration, love, sexual tension for both Lacey and Sierra, but you will find yourself laughing out loud a few times, or tears some others. Catherine Mann has written a wonderful story that has a little bit of everything, and some wonderful characters, and animals. I cannot wait for the next book.

Review:

As I said before, when I need a break from all my paranormal and fantasy genre books, Nora Roberts is my go to author, and with her latest stand alone book The Collector, I couldn’t have been happier to step away from my favourite genres. Even though Nora is classified a romance writer, I find more and more with her stand alone books at least, that the romance in the book isn’t the central plot. For me, it feels more like she’s telling a story of suspense, murder and adventure with a lovely romance intricately weaved throughout the main plot. As is the case in her latest book The Collector.

Right from the first chapter Nora draws the reader into her story with her heroine Lila Emerson witnessing the death of a total stranger. Thanks to her joy of people watching while house sitting, her life is turned upside down and poor Lila soon finds she’s smack in the middle of a crime investigation /adventure where not only is her life in jeopardy, but so too is her soon to be lover and artist Ashton Archer(don’t you just love his name?), who just happens to be the half brother to one of the deceased.

While trying to solve his half brother’s murder both Lila and Ashton keep getting deeper and deeper into a world of high stakes thievery and murder. With a hit-woman hot on their trail as they try to discover who is behind the murders of his family members over lost Russian Faberge Eggs, Lila and Ashton find romance and love as he discovers she’s his muse and needs to paint or sketch her, and Lila discovers that it’s okay to let someone in and allow herself to depend on someone else for a change.

I really enjoyed the way Nora set up the romance between Lila and Ashton. At first I thought these two characters are complete opposites of each other, and just how is this romance going to work? Well, being Nora, she found just the right way and weaved a beautiful romance around mystery, murder and adventure. I love the fact that with any of her books Nora never rushes the romantic plot. She keeps it slow and low key at the beginning but then once the romance takes off, the characters run with it and it pulls the reader in even more. Yes I will admit at times I wanted to smack Ashton for his over bearing ways where Lila is concerned, but as we get to know more and more about Ashton and his life, I began to see why he’s like that. I finally stopped wanting to smack him and instead began swooning over him and his protective ways. As it turns out Lila is the perfect female for him because she brings out the best in him not only with his art, but also his personality. I also love Lila as the heroine, she’s funny, flirty, and keeps our poor hero on his toes every moment of the day. He never knows just where she’s going or what she’s rambling on about most times, and it’s these scenes in the book that pull the hero and heroine even closer together.

The romance between Lila and Ashton is fun, sexy, flirty but with danger and murder following their every move. I absolutely loved the whole Faberge Egg and Russian Tsar history we got in this one. I absolutely love that kind of history and the stories that go with it. Nora really did her research on that part of plot and had me wanting to book a trip to Russia and Italy to visit some of the places that our couple journey too as they try and solve the murder mystery while dodging a crazed hit-woman who’s after them. I got so carried away while reading this book thanks to Nora’s amazing way with words and the pictures she can paint in my head that there were a few times I jumped when my phone or doorbell went off. For all I know it could have been the crazed hit-woman coming after me, LOL!!! If you are a Nora Roberts fan I promise you this one won’t disappoint. Nora paints a world full of danger, thievery, murder, cons, Russian atifacts, and romance all wrapped up in one fun filled adventure.

Until next time, happy reading!!
