Description:
He’s arrogant, domineering, and… To. Die. For.

Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.

Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something… unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.

Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable—breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life…or is it Hunter?

Review:

Obsession by Jennifer L. Armentrout is a standalone book, which takes place in the world of her Lux series.  Obsession is not part of the Lux series, but focuses on an Arum (enemy to the Lux), as the lead.  Wheras, the Lux series is YA, Obsession is an adult book all the way. Jennifer does write erotic romance under the alias of J. Lynn.  But as Jennifer L. Armentrout, Obsession is her sexiest book yet, with a fantastic couple.

We meet our heroine, Serena, early on when she is caught in the middle of seeing her best friend murdered.  She herself survives, but her life is now in danger.  Enter Hunter, our hero, who is assigned to protect her.  Hunter is an Arum. If you are familiar with the Lux series, Arums are the enemy to the Luxen.  But in this book, we get a different perspective, as we see the Arum POV in the eyes of Hunter.  Let me make this perfectly clear, I don’t care how the Luxens feel about the Arums, as Hunter is the most gorgeous and hottest man around. Sigh.. Now I know Daemon is hot, but so far he is stuck in YA. Lol  Hunter is all man, and even Serena can’t keep her eyes, and eventually her hands, off of him.  This was a fabulous romance between an Arum (alien) and a Human.

Hunter at first wants nothing to do with Serena, as he looks down at humans. But over time he finds himself with feelings he did not know he could have, as he was becoming obsessed with her.  The wonderful thing about this book, besides the sensual steamy sex scenes, was the banter between Hunter and Serena.  He came across early on as arrogant, bossy, sarcastic, but Serena would come back at him full force.  She turned out to be a great heroine, tough, stubborn & feisty, who was a perfect match for Hunter, and it was such fun to see them interact with each other.  Sexually they were awesome together, and I do have to stress again, this book is not for the younger set.

Aside from the romance and sex, this was a great story, with the focus on saving Serena.  There was plenty of action, danger, and edge of your seat suspense. One of the most important part of the story is what Serena was able to find out from her friend, before she died.  This may effect what happens to the Luxens, Arums and Humans in the future.

Though Armentrout doesn’t talk about our friends from the Lux series,  there is a brief appearance (only those who read the series will know).  What Serena discovers will most likely have a bearing on the Lux series, especially the next book in that series, Origin.

I thoroughly enjoyed Obsession, as it was fun, exciting, wonderful characters, as well as a hot sexy read. If you think the cover is hot, as well as the guy on the cover, oh please read this book.  I cannot wait for Origin, because I will have a different view of the Arums, and I am interested to see how Armentrout handles this.  Even if you have not read the Lux series, please read Obsession, you will not regret it.  Jennifer Armentrout has become one of my favorite writers.  Well done.

  2. Barb, nicely done. I love it when the woman can give it right back to her male verbally! I don’t follow the YA series but I’ll definetly give this stand alone book a try. Yes, the cover is very hot.

  4. Wonderful review Ms. Barb. I have only delved into what can be called “alien” romance, via Deidre Knight, and Susan Grant….but your review has me adding Obsession to my TBR. You had me at “this is not YA” *laughing* I look forward to reading this book! That is…..as soon as I can stop thinking about you know who, and you know which book that we BOTH plan to read this week. That may take some time. 🙂
