Schasm
Schasm series – Book 1
by Shari Ryan
Release Date: January 25, 2014Links to order Schasm: Amazon / Barnes & Noble/ The Book Depository
Book Description: Chloe Valcourt drifts between two worlds: the dark reality of her domineering mother and feeble father and the vivid fantasy of her imagination. With her condition comes the harsh observation of doctors who intend to cure her of it. But a chance encounter with a handsome and vaguely familiar young man in her dream world hints at the possibility of hidden truths—and a life she can’t remember. As her drifts become a greater escape from the cruelty of the real world, Chloe finds herself lost between what is real and what is imagined, questioning her very existence. Can she remain in the lush new imagined landscape to find happiness in a realm of her own invention? Is she doomed to return to the harsh reality of the outside world forever? Or will she become trapped somewhere between the two…unable to return to either?
Review:
Schasm is the first book in The Schasm Series by Shari J Ryan. Nineteen year old Chloe Valcourt has a condition that has plagued her since childhood. Her ability to “drift” into other realities is labeled mild schizophrenia by her doctors and mother. Secluded and sheltered from the outside world she is basically a prisoner in her own home, in her own room. The only time she can escape her real life is going for tedious weekly treatments at the mental ward and her drifting.
Her drifts are slowly becoming the life she wants as her true reality. Even more so now that she has met Alex Levette, a young man who saved her from drowning during one of her accidental drifts. Yet, there is a strange familiarity to Alex. Has Chloe met him before? With his help Chloe becomes more comfortable and agile at drifting. All the while her mother sees her becoming more defiant and closed off to her, so she becomes more overbearing and abusive. Chloe’s reality and drifting begin to cross, intersect and overlap. She no longer can comprehend what is real and what is reality and does she even want to know!
This book takes you on the emotional journey through mental illness. Striking, schizophrenic and breath taking are the words to describe the world created by Author Shari Ryan. At times I could feel the anxiety, turmoil and confusion creeping off of the pages and capturing me full on. I began to question everything and doubt what may be real or unreal for Chloe. Turning each page I wanted her to find her happy ending but with any mental illness happy endings tend to be elusive.
Book one leaves you gasping for air wondering “What just happened?” Hoping to find the answers and clarity in book two as to what has caused the Schasm so to speak! Anxiously awaiting!

Nice review Erin. All of these authors are new for me.
Mental illness is finally finding a foothold and hopefully will gain attention to all facits that are now known. Isn’t it interesting that anything that has been ignored for so long
has to be written into fiction to draw attention to the need for research and daylight to bring it out of the dark. Kudos to the author and thanks from those who have family who have suffered so long with people looking away and ignoring the issues.
These authors are all new to me. Thanks for the opportunity!
