REVIEW:TO HAVE AND TO HOLD is the fifth and final? Instalment in Aleatha Romig’s contemporary , adult BRUTAL VOWS erotic, Mafia romance series. This is twenty-nine year old, Roriguez Cartel lieutenant Emiliano ‘Em’ Ruiz, and eighteen year old, Luciano Mafia princess Isabella Luciano’s story line. TO HAVE AND TO HOLD can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for backstory and cohesion.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Em and Isabella) TO HAVE AND TO HOLD follows in the wake of Isabella Luciano’s arrival in San Diego, California where she is tasked with helping her cousin Dario’s sister Mia, in the wake of the birth of her child but Isabella believes she is being tested, in the hopes of crawling home with her proverbial tail tucked between her legs . As a princess in the Luciano Mafia, Isabella has been ordered to keep her distance from the Mexican Cartel but two of Isabella’s cousins have married into the Roriguez Cartel, and our heroine is about to lose her heart to their newest Lieutenant. Emiliano ‘Em’ Ruiz is a high ranking member of the Roriguez Cartel, and our hero has fallen for a woman who has been raised to fear, wholly unaware of the workings of the Mafia and Cartel. As Em begins a slow seduction of our story line heroine, the Cartel is pulled into war the Russian Bratva.

The world building follows several paths including the dysfunctional dynamics of the Luciano family. Isabella is nothing more than a naïve pawn for her father’s rise to power but our heroine refuses to stand down when her father demands her return and more. As the Cartel battles for control, Isabella quickly learns about the dangers threatening the man that she loves.

The relationship between Isabella and Em is an age-gap, forbidden love, Romeo and Juliet-esque story of insta-love. Emiliano knows immediately that Isabella is the woman he is hoping to claim as his own but Isabella struggles with the pre-conceived notion that all Cartel members are dangerous killers. Naive and young, raised in a proverbial gilded cage, Isabella quickly settles into life with the Roriguez Cartel, falling for a man who will lay claim to her heart. The $ex scenes are passionate and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

Once again, there is a large ensemble of colorful, powerful and energetic secondary and supporting characters, most of whom we met in the previous story lines including Isabella’s new friend Liliana. We are introduced to Isabella’s father Carmine Luciano, and her siblings Noemi and Tony, and her guards Horace and Silas.

TO HAVE AND TO HOLD is a story of power and control, family and restriction, acceptance and love. The character driven premise is engaging and compelling; the romance is seductive; the characters are determined and charismatic.The Brutal Vows series is not as dark or dramatic as some of the other Mafia romance story lines-the quick conflict resolution is subdued but there is plenty of sl&t shaming, which is addressed and condemned..

Told from dual first person perspectives (Ricky and Marilyn) ONE STRING follows the second chance relationship between our story line couple. Ricky Dunn was Marilyn James’ best friend’s older brother, and the man who stirred something deep within our story line heroine. A one-night stand, followed by years of ghosting, left Marilyn struggling with her attraction to the man who destroyed her heart. Reconnecting at Ricky’s sister’s wedding, Marilyn made it clear there was no future between she and Ricky, and walked away without looking back but karma came back to bite Marilyn when Ricky, having graduated college, applied for a position at the firm for which Marilyn worked. A fake-relationship ensued in an effort to present a united front but an accident back home pulled Ricky out of Marilyn’s life leaving our heroine battling with everything that went wrong. The world building follows several intersecting paths including the lifelong friendships between Marilyn, Devan and Jill; Marilyn and Ricky’s struggle to leave their hometown of Riverbend, and Ricky’s need to apologize again, and again, and again.

The relationship between Marilyn and Ricky is one of second chances, of a sorts. Marilyn was Ricky’s little sister’s best friend, and in this their one-night stand destroyed any hopes for a happily ever after. Ricky didn’t want a relationship, and Marilyn’s self-esteem plummeted in the aftermath. The $ex scenes are passionate and seductive without the use of over the top sexually graphic language and text.

We are reintroduced to Devan and Justin, Jill and Todd, and Kandace and Dax.

ONE STRING is a story of heart break and emotions, family and friendships, forgiveness and love. The premise is captivating and entertaining; the romance is impassioned and fated; the characters are charismatic and determined.

Mia believes Alejandro is an abusive Cartel member, and stubbornly accepts the inevitable in the wake of her brother’s orders and commands but Alejandro is not the man Mia believes him to be, becoming her guardian and protector when someone takes aim at our story line heroine.

The world building follows Alejandro as he struggle to uncover the threats against the woman with whom he is falling in love. Alejandro’s father easily accepts our story line heroine but not everyone member of the Cartel is a Mafia princess into the fold.The Cartel has already married off one of their own to the Mafia, and Alejandro is the next to cross the line between from foe to friend.

The relationship between Mia and Alejandro is an arranged marriage. Mia has already suffered at the hands of her former husband,and struggles with the possibility of jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Alejandro is a man determined to protect the woman entrusted with his care, and in this, Mia is surprised that her life is nothing like she had expected. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate .

There is a large ensemble cast of coloful and powerful secondary and supporting characters including several members of the Mexican Carter, Italian Mafia and Russian Bratva including Mia’s brothers Dante, Dario and his wife Catalina, Catalina’s sister Camila, brother Em, and their father Andres Ruiz. We are introduced to Alejandro’s brother Ria, and their parents Josefina and Jorge Roriquez, housekeeper Viviana, and bodyguard Silas. The requisite evil has many faces.

TILL DEATH DO US PART is another story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, death and destruction, acceptance and love. The premise is tense and thrilling but not as dark as some other Mafia story lines and series; the romance is seductive; the characters are determined, dynamic and animated.

In an effort to secure position, and shore up powers, Andres Ruiz, head of the Mexican Cartel, offered up his daughter to the Italian Mafia, wherein, she would marry soon to be capo Dario Luciano. All was not well with the Luciano Famiglia, of Kansas City, a power struggle for the seat at the top, was about to rain down, targeting our story line heroine, and all the women who came before. Dario Luciano has worked his way to the top of the food chain but a betrayal would threaten the peace, and the relationship with his young wife. What ensues is the building relationship between Dario and Catalina, and the potential fall-out as deception comes at a cost, and Dario must take action before more innocent lives are lost.

The world building reveals some of the back story and history between the members of the Luciano Famiglia: the fight for control, and the betrayal that forces Dario to destroy those who would destroy everyone else. Catalina’s never expected to be ‘sold’ to the highest bidder, and rumors about her intended threatened any sense of normality our heroine had hoped for the future.

The relationship between Dario and Catalina begins as an arranged marriage in which Catalina is a pawn used to bargain her father’s position of power.Raised to know her place in the Cartel society, Catalina was not surprised but expected never expected to find herself married to the Italian Mafia. Dario Luciano’s rise to the top meant choosing a suitable wife ; a woman who is completely aware of the lifestyle of a mobster; a woman whose duty is to stand by his side. From the outset, Dario warns he is a violent man but the women in his life never have to fear his temper or loss of control.
