A Tale of Two KittiesAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
With a well-placed paw on a keyboard or a pointed stare, Kathleen’s two cats, Hercules and Owen, have helped her to solve cases in the past—so she has learned to trust their instincts. But she will need to rely on them more than ever when a twenty-year-old scandal leads to murder…

The arrival of the Janes brothers has the little town of Mayville Heights buzzing. Everyone of a certain age remembers when Victor had an affair with Leo’s wife, who then died in a car accident.

Now it seems the brothers are trying to reconcile, until Kathleen finds Leo dead. The police set their sights on Leo’s son and Kathleen’s good friend Simon, who doesn’t have much of an alibi. To prove her friend innocent, Kathleen will have to dig deep into the town’s history—and into her sardine cracker supply, because Owen and Hercules don’t work for free…

Review
:
A Tale of Two Kitties by Sofia Kelly is the 9th book in her Magical Cats Mystery series.   I have not read the previous books in this series, but it read very well as a standalone.  With that being said, reading the early books would be fun and enjoyable.

Our heroine in this series is Kathleen Paulson, the librarian of Mayville Heights, as well as her adorable two cats, Hercules and Owen.  No..the cats do not talk (as in another series I read), but they do have some strange magical abilities like walking through a door, or just disappearing.  What make Hercules and Owen fun, is the little simple hints they give Kathleen in helping her solve crimes, and the cute humor is enjoyable throughout the book.

A Tale of Two Kitties is a murder mystery, as Kathleen is the one who finds her friend, Simon’s father dead and the mystery begins.  A 20 year old scandal will be the catalyst that sets the stage of this mystery.  Victor Janes has just returned to visit his brother Leo, to make amends  after he had run away with Leo’s wife twenty years hence.  When Leo is found dead, there are a number of suspects, including Victor, Simon and a few other suspects.

Kathleen gets involved in trying to solve the murder, and find a way to prove that Simon is innocent.  She will talk to the local people in trying to find clues, and as we get closer to the end, the danger and excitement escalates.  Though this is murder, the entire story flowed so well, and except for a short period, it was a calm fun read, with no tension.  As we held our breaths at the end, I loved how Kathleen got out of her predicament.   The characters that are part of this series were great, and I also enjoyed the sweet romance between Kathleen and her detective boyfriend, Marcus.

A Tale of Two Kitties was a lighthearted mystery that was a fun and fast read.  Hercules and Owen were delightful, as they always managed to get Kathleen’s attention ‘pawing’ out the clues. If you want a fast cute fun mystery , I wholly suggest you read this series.

With targets on both of their backs, Grace and Hugh will do whatever it takes to stay alive…not realizing the most dangerous threat of all is hiding right in front of their noses.

Review:

On The Chase by Katie Ruggle is the 2nd book in her Rocky Mountain K9 UnitTrilogy.  I enjoyed the first book in this trilogy, and was pleasantly surprised that On The Chase was even better.  Kaylee, our heroine, is on the run after attending a dinner with her boyfriend.  When she steps away to find the ladies room, she hears calls for help and steps into a situation she was not meant to see.  With her boyfriend’s Uncle trying to kill her, she runs to the Colorado mountains to hide with our previous book heroine.

Hugh Murdoch, whom we met in book 1, is a cop and friend of Theo (last book hero).  Hugh was suspicious of Theo’s Julie, and now that he meets Grace, he is determined to find out what she is hiding.  Hugh, who was on leave from work due to an injury,  followed Grace everywhere; trying to learn what she is hiding, and to act on his attraction to her.  Hugh also has someone trying to kill him, to stop him from a drug bust.

Grace and Hugh are in the middle of a few attacks, which Grace thinks is meant for her, but Hugh insists it is the drug lord. When Hugh gets hurt,  Grace will quickly tell Hugh and Theo the truth about who is trying to find her.  They both know how powerful this man is, and are determined to help Grace.

As Hugh protects Grace, their romance will become sizzling.  I was actually surprised that I did like Hugh and Grace together, though he was annoying early on.  I also liked how Julie would help Grace, knowing what it is like to be on the run.  Lexi was Hugh’s K-9 dog, and I enjoyed Lexi’s scenes, as well as seeing Viggy again.

The story was very suspenseful from the start, with a lot of action all the way through.  The last ¼ of the book had me holding my breath, as Grace’s life was on the line twice and no one knew where she was.  Grace did turn out to be a fantastic heroine, who managed to fight her way to survival.

On the Chase is another suspenseful story in this trilogy, and I look forward to reading the final book.  Katie Ruggle has written a great story, wonderful couple, and exciting action packed throughout.  I suggest you start with the first book, Run to Ground.

Excerpt

The floor in the entry creaked, reminding Grace of her most urgent issue at the moment: someone was in the house. As quietly as possible, she started backing up. This was not a good room to be trapped in. The only door was the one into the hallway—where the intruder was. The large, central window was solid. The two smaller panes of glass beside it would reluctantly crank out a few inches, but definitely not wide enough to fit her entire body through.
Why had she hesitated when she first heard the knock? If she’d immediately headed for the back door, she’d already be far, far away. Now she was stuck.
Her gaze ran over the room, searching for hiding spots, but there weren’t any good ones. The closet was too obvious, but it would have to do. Maybe they wouldn’t bother searching.
As she hurried toward the small closet door, her heart thumped painfully against her ribs. It beat so loudly that it felt as if everyone still left in Monroe could hear the pounding.
“What are you doing?”
She whipped around, grabbing the first thing within reach to use as a weapon.
Hugh looked from her face to her hand with his usual expression of barely contained amusement—a look that aggravated Grace more every time she encountered him. Even the dog standing next to him looked entertained. “The mute button doesn’t work on me. Trust me. Others have tried.”
There was still so much residual fear flooding through her body that Grace had a hard time understanding what he meant. She followed his gaze to the improvised weapon in her hand and realized that she was pointing the television remote at him. As her panic started to abate, anger took its place, along with a healthy dose of embarrassment.
“What are you doing here?” she demanded, allowing her arm to drop back to her side.
“I could ask you the same thing,” he said.
“What?” It was almost a screech. Grace blamed residual nerves…and the fact that Hugh was truly aggravating. “I live here!”
“Jules said you were job hunting today.” She opened her mouth, but he spoke again before she could ask how that justified him breaking into her house. “Why didn’t you open the door when I knocked?”
Her eyes narrowed. “You came in because you thought I wasn’t here? What were you going to do? Go through my stuff?”
The guilty look that flashed over his face disappeared quickly, but she still caught it. “You were!” Another thought occurred to her, and she almost growled. “How did you get in?”
His expression of pure innocence just made her suspicions double. “What do you mean? The door was unlocked.”
“No, it wasn’t. I definitely remember locking—”
“Hey!” he interrupted, his attention on the TV screen. “Is this the Tattered Hearts where Tatiana realizes that Natasha and Jorge are scheming against her?”
“What? I don’t know. I’ve never watched this show.”
“You’ve never seen Tattered Hearts?” He grabbed her hand and pulled her to the couch. Bemused by the sudden topic shift, she sat. “You are missing out. It’s the best show ever.”
Hugh plopped his oversized self on the couch right next to Grace, jostling her. He was so big, a wall of heat and muscle and sexiness—whoa. She shut down that thought abruptly. His dog stretched out in front of them, her furry head resting on Grace’s foot, which was comforting and kind of nice. She scowled and briefly considered telling Hugh to leave—although the dog could stay—but Grace was curious why he was so obsessed with this soap. Besides, as annoying as Hugh could be, arguing with him kept her mind off Martin Jovanovic. She honestly didn’t want to be in this big, creaky house alone anymore, especially after having the snot scared out of her, so she settled in to watch.
“Wait,” she said after a few minutes. “So the guy with the waxed chest—”
“Jorge.”
“So Jorge is cheating on the woman with the scary eyebrows—”
“Tatiana.”
“Jorge is cheating on Tatiana with the lizard-faced woman?”
“Natasha.”
“Why?” Keeping her gaze locked on the television, Grace made a face. “Tatiana is so much hotter, and Natasha is all about the drama. That gets so tiring.”
“I know.” Hugh sighed. “Jorge’s an idiot.”
“Yeah. He is.” Although she wanted to talk more about Jorge’s poor life choices, Grace went quiet so she could watch the show. As the soap continued, she found herself leaning forward, fascinated despite herself.
“Oh. My. God.” Grace clapped a hand over her mouth in shocked glee as a commercial filled the small screen. “Did Tatiana actually tell Jorge about the secret baby?”
“I know, right? Natasha knew all along, too.” Hugh shook his head and tsked. “Just wait. Javier—”
“Stop! No spoilers!” Lunging toward him and laughing, Grace clapped a hand over his mouth. As soon as she made contact, she froze. His skin was warm—almost hot—and his cheeks as stubbly as his lips were smooth. Grace stared at him. What was she doing? This was Hugh, a cop who was so suspicious of her that he’d broken into her house to dig through her things. Why was she flirting with him?
Realizing that she was still touching him, Grace started to yank her arm back, but he caught her hand before she could pull it away. He gave it a gentle squeeze before releasing it.
“What—”
“The show’s on,” Hugh interrupted. “Hush, or you’ll miss it.”
Watching Tattered Hearts was more important than smacking him down for shushing her, so Grace settled against the sofa cushions and tried to ignore the annoying, muscle-bound cop sharing the couch with her. She couldn’t deny how nice it was to have him there, though. It made her feel a little less alone.
Grace felt herself relaxing for the first time in over a week. With a relieved sigh, she let herself enjoy the warmth of Hugh’s shoulder so close to hers and the comfort of his presence. She got caught up in the drama of Tatiana, Jorge, and Natasha, and forgot about anyone with the name Jovanovic for a little while.

cat shining brightAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
The stakes are higher and more personal than ever for feline investigator Joe Grey when death comes to his beloved coastal California town in this twentieth installment of the enchanting cat mystery series.

While new father Joe Grey is overjoyed to teach his three young kittens about the world, he misses his cop work — secretly helping solve crimes alongside his human friends at Molena Point P. D. But when beautician Barbara Conley and one of her customers are found dead in the salon, Joe makes an exception, he heads for the crime scene. He has no idea that the kittens are following him, or how they will complicate the investigation.

But this is not the only danger to the kittens. A stranger is lurking around the home of Joe’s tabby lady, Dulcie, where the kittens were born. Both parents’ backs are up and their claws out, ready to protect their babies and to protect Wilma Getz, Dulcie’s human housemate.

As the death of the beautician becomes entangled with a gang of thieves working the village, Joe, Dulcie, Kit and Pan are all into the investigation; and they are led to unexpected connections, to the building of the new cat shelter and to a neighbor who becomes suddenly an unexpected part of the tangle.

Review:

Cat Shining Bright by Shirley Rousseau Murphy is the 20th book in her fabulous & fun Joe Grey series.  I have read every book in this series, and it is one of my favorite go to books when I want a sweet lighthearted mystery with a group of wonderful talking cats, and their humans.  These are magical sentient cats that live in Molena Point, California, but only their humans close to them know, and the cats are the real ones who solve the crimes.   I am amazed that into the 20th book, Murphy can still win us over each and every time.  I adore our cats, Joe, Dulcie and Kit.  They are awesome, sweet, daring, and clever.  The humans who are a major part of this series, are Clyde and Ryan; Wilma, Charlie (who is married to the police chief, and he does not know about the cats).  They are all an awesome group that makes this series so much fun and exciting.

In Cat Shining Bright, Dulcie has given birth to three kittens, two boys and a girl, and Joe, the proud father, is finally able to get past the stress of Dulcie giving birth.  Joe and Dulcie have always been a team from the start of this series, and we have enjoyed the love they have for each other.  A few books later, we met the wonderful sweet and daring Kit, who found her own love, Pan recently. It will take a few months, with everyone waiting with anticipation, for the kittens to begin to talk.  It was very well written and fun when they did.

It is Kit and Pan who will discover a car theft ring stealing cars during a storm; this after the death of a beautician found in her salon with a customer.  Though Joe has been spending most of his time with his kittens and Dulcie, he becomes intrigued by the car thefts, and will join Pan and Kit in their investigations.  The Molena Police department has gotten used to Joe entering the station and falling asleep in the Chief’s office’ of course they do not know he listens and learns all the information there.   One day, the kittens became interested in what their father was doing and secretly followed him; Joe will catch them before they are discovered, but their curiosity is now peaked.

What follows is an exciting mystery, trying to find out who murdered the two people, and who was behind all the car thefts.  There are trying times when Joe, Kit, Pan and even the kittens find themselves in danger.  When Wilma (Dulcie’s human), senses an intruder in her house, she will take Dulcie and the kittens to stay at Clyde & Ryan’s (joe’s humans) house for protection.  Someone knows about the secret book about the magical sentient cats, and their ability to talk; and they want the book.  Besides the cats finding clues, and making secret calls to the police, the humans will also play a big part in solving the crimes.  As I have noted before, I love the characters that have accepted our cats; Charlie, Ryan, Wilma, Clyde, Kate, etc.  We also spend time with the police department characters, such as Max, Dallas, etc, who have no idea about the cats.

This is a fun series, exciting mysteries, and fantastic characters, including cats and humans.  Do not let that fact that these cats can talk deter you into reading this series. It is a fun and awesome series, and so well written my Shirley Rousseau Murphy. Give yourself a chance to read this enjoyable series.

Description:

The only problem is: happily-single Zoe doesn’t actually enjoy weddings—but that might change when she meets the singer of a local band playing at one of her weddings. His name is Levi Dolson and he’s too gorgeous for his own good. And now he’s gone ahead and charmed her new dachshund. . .

It’s no secret that Zoe doesn’t believe in fairy tales, but that doesn’t stop her from wanting to make sweet music with Levi. While she’s convinced she doesn’t need a man, when someone starts setting one trap after the next to make sure she never plans a wedding ever again, she might need Levi in more ways than she could have imagined. But just how far is Zoe’s hidden enemy willing to go? The only thing Levi knows for sure is that he will do everything in his power to protect the woman who brings music to his soul. Maybe that will prove to Zoe, once and for all, that he is a man worthy of her heart. . .

Review:

A Wedding Tail by Casey Griffin is the 3rd book in her Rescue Dog Romance series. I did enjoy the previous books in this series; however I had mixed feelings about this book.  I will go into that later.

Zoe Plum, our heroine, is a wedding planner, and a friend of our previous heroines (Addison & Piper). Zoe loves planning weddings, though she has sworn off men since she was left at the altar years before.  The story begins with Zoe in the midst of making sure the wedding she is doing goes well, but it will turn out to be the wedding from hell, as everything goes wrong, which includes the best man claiming he loves his best friends bride to be.  Needless to say, the wedding did not go off, but it will haunt Zoe for most of the story.

Levi Dolson ,our hero, is a musician with his own band. He is scheduled to be a groomsman, but he also does side things to make extra money, like play a piano, ride a horse or sing anything.  Levi considers himself a catch or a womanizer, and he does everything to get Zoe’s attention.  Though she has no interest, and with everything falling apart, Levi will be there every step of the way to try to help Zoe, and win her over. Levi also gets a kick out Zoe’s side business (selling sex toys).

What follows is a slow build romance, as well as a suspenseful story about who is trying to destroy Zoe by sabotaging everything she is involved in; whether it is destroying her van, framing her for various attacks, stealing her assistant, and destruction of her business and reputation.  Zoe can’t seem to get a break, as she becomes a suspect in a possible murder.  Levi will be there for her, as he is very persistent and a calming influence on her; slowly she begins to have feelings for him.  We will also be introduced to Zoe’s new pet, as she ends up adopting a dachshund, Freddy, who was cute.

This had a good storyline, and the last third of the book was very exciting; especially with Zoe right in the middle of trying to save her friend from a serial murderer.  I also loved Zoe’s two friends, whom we had met previously.  What I had mixed feelings about was the wild craziness in the first half of the book, and the emphasis on the sex toys, which was intended to be funny, but it annoyed me more than making me laugh.  I also did not really like Zoe, nor Levi early on.  When the murder mystery element of the storyline picked up, I got to like our couple better and the suspense was very well done.  Overall, this was a good story, but some of  the early humor was a bit over the top.

A Dog Like Daisy by Kristin O’Donnell Tubb – a Review

A Dog Like DaisyAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Max meets A Dog Called Homeless in this sweet and poignant middle grade novel told from the humorous, thoughtful perspective of a rescued pit bull as she trains to be a service dog for an injured veteran and his family.

Daisy has only ten weeks to prove her usefulness or else be sent back to the pound. Yet if she goes back, who will protect Colonel Victor from his PTSD attacks? Or save the littler human, Micah, from those infernal ear muzzles he calls earphones? What if no one ever adopts her again?

Determined to become the elite protector the colonel needs, Daisy vows to ace the service dog test. She’ll accept the ridiculous leash and learn to sit, heel, shake, even do your business, Daisy when told to. But Daisy must first learn how to face her own fears from the past or risk losing the family she’s so desperate to guard—again.

Review:

A Dog Like Daisy by Kristine O’Donnell Tubb is a story told in the perspective of a rescue dog.  This book is marked for middle grade, but do not let this stop you from reading this book, as I totally loved it.  I did not know what to expect when I decided to read this, and I am so glad I did.  I loved Daisy, a rescued two year old pit bull, who is being trained to be a service dog.  The entire book is in the POV of Daisy, and it was so well written by Kristin O’Donnell Tubb.

We meet Daisy immediately when she is in the pound.  When three humans, walk in looking at all the dogs, one of them looks at her and says she is the one; but the other two are not too keen on the choice. Victor, a veteran who had PTSD, is the one who sees a bond with Daisy, who also recognizes that this man is the one she needs to protect.  Micah is Victor’s son, and he wanted a puppy; the other man, Alex is a trainer for service dogs. Alex tries to convince Victor that they only have 10 weeks to train Daisy and she might not be a good fit, but Victor is adamant about our sweet Miss Daisy.

When they arrive home, Daisy meets Annie the wife, and their baby, as well as seeing more of Micah, who really doesn’t want him.  What follows is a beautiful heartwarming, and intense at times story of Daisy determined to learn everything to be a good service dog, as well as to protect Victor from his horrible bouts with PTSD.  The story shows the family’s struggles with Victor’s nightmares, which is dangerous, scary and out of control at times.  All this is through the eyes of Daisy, who begins to see the signs quickly when Victor is ready to go off.

Another nice part of the story is Micah trying to understand his father, and at times jealous that Daisy seems to be getting closer to his father.  But it is sweet and emotional when Micah realizes later on how special Daisy was.

A Dog Like Daisy was to my surprise a wonderful touching and delightful story, as we follow Daisy throughout and listen to her thoughts.  Thank you, Kristin O’Donnell Tubb for this amazing story.  I loved every moment of it. So very well done.

All I Want
Animal Magnetism series

Release Date: October 6, 2015

All+I+Want

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM / The Book Depository

Description:
Pilot-for-hire Zoe Stone is happy to call Sunshine, Idaho, her home base. But her quiet life is thrown for a loop when her brother’s friend Parker comes to stay with her for a week. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife special agent is a handsome flirt with a gift for getting under her skin. And the situation only escalates when Parker hires her to fly him around the area while he collects evidence on a suspected smuggler.

Now she has to live and work with the guy. But when they’re in the air, she sees another side of him. He’s driven, focused, and sharp. And while he enjoys giving commentary on her blind dates, she quickly realizes with a shock that it’s Parker who gets her engines going…

Review:

All I Want by Jill Shalvis begins with Zoe preparing for a blind date, with the help of her sister, Darcy. As Darcy gives her a hard time over the “unsexy” dress she has chosen to wear, she also gives her some advice: kiss your blind date as soon as you meet him. Zoe, of course, thinks Darcy is nuts. When they hear someone drive up and look out the window, Zoe and Darcy are both struck by the hotness that steps out of his vehicle. Darcy slips out and leaves Zoe to handle herself. When Zoe opens the door, she has a WTH moment and kisses the guy on the lips, only to discover this is NOT her date. Rather, he is Parker, her brother Wyatt’s friend, who has come to town and is crashing at her place. To say she is mortified is a bit of an understatement, but she blows it off……….or at least tries to.

Parker is a little taken aback at Zoe’s “greeting”, but quickly reminds himself he’s here on business, even though his boss has told him to take some time off to recoup from injuries he sustained while on a case. A case where a fellow agent was killed. He and Zoe dance around each other and only offer up so much about themselves and they quickly develop a bit of a routine. However, when Zoe realizes that during one of her flights, when she is flying Parker over a remote area of Idaho, she decides that there is more to Parker than he is admitting. As things progress, they both are adamant that they are not looking for a relationship, but they decide to have a little fun. When Parker’s job places Zoe in danger, he knows what he has to do to keep her safe. Will they both be able to live with the fallout of those decisions? Or, will Parker finally realize that all he wants is right in front of him?

I LOVE JILL SHALVIS AND THIS BOOK! All I Want is a wonderful addition to her Animal Magnetism series. Zoe has always been everyone else’s rock. She practically raised Wyatt and Darcy and never really got to be a kid, so it is awesome to finally get to see her have her own HEA. We find out more about her and why she was so opposed to being in a relationship, and that knowledge will break your heart. Parker’s back story will break your heart a little and when you read the interaction with him and his little sister, your heart will melt and smile all at the same time. The chemistry between Zoe and Parker was off the charts and their interactions will have you laughing out loud. We also get to see most of the previous characters and that’s always a plus. The interaction with everyone in Sunshine, Idaho makes this a place anyone would be lucky to call home. All I Want is ultimately a story about not letting your past jade your hopes for the future, but even more than that, it’s a story about coming to terms with the fact that the most carefully laid plans not coming to fruition can be a very good thing. Well done, Jill Shalvis! Very, very, very well done.

Still the One
Animal Magnetism series – Book #6
by Jill Shalvis
Release Date: April 7, 2014

Still the oneAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM / iBooks

Description:
Darcy Stone is game for anything — except sexy Navy veteran and physical therapist A.J. Colten, the guy who’d rejected her when she’d needed him most. Now the shoe is on the other foot and he needs her to play nice and help him secure grants for his patients. Unfortunately, Darcy can’t refuse. She needs the money to fund her passion project: rescuing S&R dogs and placing them with emotionally wounded soldiers.

A.J. admits it — Darcy is irresistible. But he’s already been battle-scarred by a strong-willed, vivacious, adventurous woman like Darcy, and he’s not making the same mistake twice—until he and Darcy are forced to fake a relationship. Growing closer than they’d ever imagined possible, Darcy and AJ have to ask themselves: how much between them is pretend? What’s the real thing? And where does it go from here?

Review:

Darcy Stone has always been a bit of a free spirit. She and her siblings were raised by a set of globetrotting diplomat parents who didn’t have much time for their children and that affected Darcy in ways that she’s still trying to come to terms with. After a horrible accident that left her gravely injured, she only had her brother and sister to fall back on, and she didn’t make it easy on any of them. Including herself.

Still the One begins with Darcy trying to raise money to rescue yet another S&R dog. Since her accident, she’s no longer able to travel the world for National Geographic, so she has a couple of part time jobs that don’t pay quite enough for her to rescue and place the dogs. One of her part time jobs is at A.J.’s physical therapy clinic, and he knows that she’s struggling with the way that her life is playing out. He’s the one who put her through the wringer in therapy in order for her to be able to walk again and he needs someone just like her, a physical therapy success story, to travel with him to meet a philanthropist who is interested in funding the pro-bono work that A.J. does. The problem? Darcy and A.J. tend to not get along too well, and she definitely has a problem holding her tongue. But, when A.J. tells Darcy that he needs her help, and sweetens the pot with the promise to pay her for her time in order for her to rescue more dogs, she accepts. After all, she needs the money. And the fact that she’s been mooning over A.J. has nothing to do with her decision. At all……… And, what do ya know? Seems A.J. has been pining away over Darcy as well.

Once they leave for their trip, neither is sure this was such a good idea. They meet with the philanthropist and his wife, and things go very well……very, very well…..up to a point. And, once they get back home, things really get rolling between the two of them, until a partial conversation is overheard and changes everything……………

I love this series. The back and forth between the main characters, as well as the secondary characters, is wonderfully written. I’ve been waiting on Darcy’s story, and I knew it would not disappoint. She had always been so independent, and then the accident forced her to depend on others. She has a huge heart, but had a very hard time giving it over to anyone. A.J. was perfect for her. He’s hot as hell, but also has a huge heart and moves heaven and earth to try and make a difference in people’s lives. Still the One is ultimately a story about letting down one’s defenses in order to see that letting those that love and care for you just might, in fact, be a good thing. Well done, Jill Shalvis! Very well done!

“AJ held the door open for Darcy, doing his best to keep his tongue in his mouth, but he wasn’t sure he quite managed.
“Thanks,” she said, brushing up against his arm and shoulder as she stepped into the elevator.
His free hand came out to stabilize her, a purely instinctual move. He didn’t give a thought to the fact that she hated to be helped because he couldn’t give a thought to anything.
Holy. Shit. Hotness.
Her little black dress—emphasis on little—just about killed him.. The bodice was short, snug, and, at first glance, modest.
Second glance, not so much.
She bent over and fiddled with her heels, which had a strap around her ankle and screamed SEX. So did the way the hem of her dress rose up on her thighs, high enough that his eyes nearly popped right out of his head. “What are you doing?” he managed.
“Nothing.” Still bent at the waist, she shifted to her other heel, during which time he pressed his fingers into his eye sockets to keep his eyes in his head.
She was all leg and silken skin and crazy gorgeous hair, and he attempted to steel himself against her but he failed. He’d been wrong, oh so very wrong when he said he’d be able to handle her. He couldn’t, not in her yoga pants, not in a sexy little black dress, not at work, not in his truck, not in an elevator, not in anything anywhere—he couldn’t do it, Sam I Am.
She straightened and sent him a searching look. She’d piled all that long curly hair on top of her head but several silky strands had escaped, brushing her temples and shoulders, giving her a just-got-laid look. Her lips were siren red and he knew it made him a pig, but all he could think about was her mouth and how her lips would looked stretched around his—
“We’re on time still, right?” she asked.
He had to clear his throat to answer. “Yeah.” Jesus.
The door slid shut and silence filled the elevator while they stared at each other. To keep his hands to himself, he backed to the wall.
“So,” she said, looking like she was mentally cracking her knuckles. “What are the rules here? Kiss ass? Sit, shake, and roll over on command? Tell everyone how you saved my life? Obey your every order?”
Her sarcasm helped him roll his tongue back into his mouth. “I will ask you to kiss someone’s ass never,” he said. “Same for sit and shake and roll over. And you know damn well I didn’t save your life. But as for the obeying me? That. Lots of that would be great.”

Description:
When adrenaline runs high, so does the force of desire…

For Shay Appleton, it’s love at first sight when a gorgeous stray dog is brought into the animal shelter where she works. She just knows he’ll make a terrific watch dog—and with an abusive ex who won’t let go, she needs all the protection she can get. But Shay never suspected that her new pet is actually a trained police K-9 named Bogart—until Bogart’s even more gorgeous, human partner shows up on her doorstep.

Officer James Cannon is one tall, strong alpha male who’s convinced that Shay stole his dog. But once he gets closer to the suspect, he realizes that this stubborn, independent woman not only needs a guard dog, she needs James as well. It seems that someone from her past is stalking her, and threatening her life. When danger meets desire, will James risk his career and his best friend…to protect the woman who’s stolen his heart?

Review:

Irresistible Force by D.D. Ayres is the first full length book in her new K-9 Rescue series. I had read and enjoyed the novella prior to reading this book. Irresistible Force can be read as a standalone, as it is a different story revolving around K-9 rescue dogs.

We meet our hero, Officer James Cannon, as he is spying on a cabin in the woods. He is looking for his kidnapped partner, Bogart, whom we learn later is a K-9 dog. You can tell immediately how much James loves his partner. When he confronts the person who has Bogart, he is very angry and reacts badly to the owner of the house.

Here we meet Shay Appleton, who tries to keep her dog, Prince away from this intruder. James is confused why Bogart is happy and friendly, but his anger is out of control, and he forcibly handcuffs Shay. After the local Deputy comes to Shay’s rescue, James learns that she adopted Prince a month ago. James calms down and listens to her story, finding it hard to believe, but then when Shay describes the person who brought the dog to the animal shelter to be euthanized, he realizes it was his ex, who kidnapped Bogart, and Shay actually saved his life by adopting him. Shay is now angry at how James handled her, and wants to press charges, since she also does not want to lose Prince, whom she has grown to love and depend on. But he is a police dog, and she is heartbroken as they leave.

James, ready to head home after signing release papers at the police station, feels somewhat bad for Shay, and passes by her cabin. He finds her being accosted, and comes to her rescue. All of this is in the beginning and this should tell you that it is an exciting action packed adventure, with what will turn out to be a wonderful romance, not to mention the cutest and smartest dog.

There are so many stories within that will keep your attention throughout. Shay has a hard luck life that causes her nightmares…from her childhood, to her stalker ex-boyfriend, a possible mob hit, among other things. She has suffered so much, that one scene nearer to the end, actually bothered me. But she had James and Bogart/Prince to help her. James has his own issues with his ex-girlfriend, her attempt to win him back, then to threaten him, will cause more grief and danger to Shay.

The romance between James and Shay rapidly grows in a sizzling relationship, with each having to overcome their major obstacles. I loved how James, who came off nasty early on, became so sweet and caring to Shay. Will James be able to help convince Shay to trust him?   Will Shay be able to stand up against her ex? Can Shay overcome all things that have happened to her in the past and trust love? If they stay together, what name will they choose for their dog…Bogart or Prince? 🙂

D.D. Ayres has created an exciting storyline that has everything you would enjoy…romance, suspense, action-packed, danger, tension, humor, great couple and a wonderful dog. I wholly recommend that you read Irresistible Force.
