Adrina MacGill sees and hears things that no ordinary lass can. At first she attributes the visions and whispers as nothing more than her overactive imagination. But when everyone she loves is cursed by an evil enchantment, she’s forced to acknowledge the sinister reality. Following her inner guidance, she travels to Tancraig Castle where unexpected aid comes from a bold Highlander. But even though the handsome warrior repels her, she’s drawn to his electrifying kisses.

Duncan MacGregon scorns superstition and anything that isn’t rational and logical. When a pretty lass shows up at his brother’s castle he’s skeptical about her, and her fantastic tale. War is looming on the horizon, and he must strategize and gear up for battle. So when Duncan is commissioned to escort the attractive lass home, he balks at the task. Yet despite his resistance, he feels an irrational, scorching desire for the beauty. And as they continue their journey through the highlands, mysterious things start to occur. Was Adrina telling the truth after all?

••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE HIGHLAND CURSE is the second installment in Dana D’ Angelo’s adult THE SCOTTISH STRIFE Highlander historical romance series. This is Duncan MacGregon, and Adrina MacGill’s storyline. Duncan was first introduced to the reader in The Highland Chief #1. THE HIGHLAND CURSE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. There is a slight fantasy aspect to the storyline

Told from third person perspective THE HIGHLAND CURSE looks at the power of magic. Adrina MacGill approached Tancraig Castle in the hopes of procuring some assistance-our heroine believes everyone at home has been cursed by her father’s one-time cleric, but Adrina herself has some psychic abilities of her own. Our heroine is a seer with visions, and dreams of portents of doom. When the latest visions warn of her parent’s impending deaths, Adrina goes in search of aid, in the hopes of returning her father’s estate to its former ways. But a war between the English and the Scots has the MacGregon Clan stretched to the limits for men. Enter Duncan MacGregon, Laird Rory MacGregon’s brother, and the man who would become Adrina’s mate.

The relationship between Adrina and Duncan begins acrimoniously as Duncan wants nothing to do with the stranger, and believes her tales of ‘possession by magic’ are crazy and insane. But the more Duncan hears of the strange happenings at Adrina’s home, the more he begins to realize that perhaps Adrina is far from insane. What ensues is a cross-country journey where Adrina has several more visions that do not bode well for her family back home, and Duncan’s hardened heart begins to melt for the woman with whom he is falling in love.

We are reintroduced to Rory MacGregon (Duncan’s brother) and Darra (from The Highland Chief #1), as well as Darra’s mother Venora. Venora is a healer as well as a seer, and with it comes the realization that something is definitely amiss where Adrina is concerned.

THE HIGHLAND CURSE is first and foremost a story of romance set in the  Scottish Highlands of 1560 as war simmers between the English and Scots. As to the authenticity of Dana D’Angelo’s ‘historical’ accuracy in her storylines,  the author has stated the series is set in a ‘fantasy world’ of her own creation, but the backdrop of war is always a fascinating addition to any historical romance. THE SCOTTISH STRIFE series is not a series about the Anglo-Scottish wars but of a romance set against a culture and landscape where a long fought war has scarred the people of Scotland. The premise is engaging and entertaining; the characters are intense and magical; the romance is seductive without the use of sexual erotic imagery.

My only concern is the ‘supernatural’ path that the author has chosen to venture. I was not aware that the series would address supernatural elements such as magic, fae, Druids, and seers, and at this point, I am not aware if the remainder of the series will follow the same direction.

THE HIGHLAND CURSE is an enjoyable read with charming characters and a welcome happily ever after.

With their father nearing death, Rory MacGregon and his brothers fear the inevitable. But their hopes are renewed when the ailing man names a renowned Scottish healer who defected to England years ago. Rory crosses dangerous territory to obtain her help, only to discover that the gifted healer would rather kill herself than save his dying father. Rory gauges that kidnapping the woman is his only option when the healer’s beautiful daughter appears. The spirited lass declares that she is also a healer, and offers to go in her mother’s stead.

Darra Berchelaine has heard many stories about the bloodthirsty savages from the north. When she learns that the devil Scots plan to abduct her mother, Darra must protect her at all cost — even if that means feigning co-operation and luring the brutish Highlanders away from the castle. But even as she schemes to escape from her enemies, she finds herself inexplicably drawn to the brawny Highland Chief. Suddenly Darra realizes that the handsome Highlander is neither an enemy nor a savage. And the only thing she needs to protect is her heart.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE HIGHLAND CHIEF is the first installment in Dana D’Angelo’s adult SCOTTISH STRIFE historical, romance series. This is Rory MacGregon, and Englishwoman Lady Darra Berchelaine’s storyline.

Told from third person point of view using current day and memories of the past, THE HIGHLAND CHIEF focuses on the ‘kidnapping’ of Darra Berchelaine by Scotsman Rory MacGregon. Darra and her mother Venora are English healers, and Venora had a previous history with Rory’s father. What ensues is the attempted abduction of Venora Berchelaine wherein Darra offers herself up in exchange for her mother. Darra, an accomplished healer in her own right, finds herself a willing captive on a cross country journey that will find Darra and Rory falling for one another while trying to outrun the British Army, local bands of thieves, and eventually Rory’s family who despise Darra and everything she represents.

The relationship between Darra and Rory is one of immediate attraction but Darra is Rory’s prisoner, and the only person who may be able to save his dying father. The sexual tension between our leading couple is palpable; Darra is attracted to the man who has taken her from her family and home, and Rory fantasizes about the woman at every opportunity. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive without the over the top graphic erotic imagery.

The world building focuses on the struggles between the England and Scotland; the war between the countries; and the memories that allow the Highlanders to focus their hatred on a people they barely know. Cross-cultural barriers and a mutual hatred between the English and the Scots proves to be a continuous catalyst for battle and war.

THE HIGHLAND CHIEF is an entertaining and romantic storyline but there are some issues of spelling; typos and improper grammar that could have been corrected with a proper proofreader and editor but he errors did not detract from my overall enjoyment. The premise will captivate your attention; the characters are colorful, sympathetic and spirited; the romance leads to a happily ever after. There is always something magical about a Highlander and the woman he loves.

Interview red:black

TRC:   Hi Dana and welcome to The Reading Café.

We would like to start with some background information. Please tell us
something about your self?

Follow Dana: Website  / Goodreads / Twitter / Facebook

Dana:  Thanks for having me at The Reading Cafe! Ok, about me. I’m a stay-at-home mom, and have been writing historical romance stories seriously for the past three years. I live near Toronto, Canada, and am a die hard foodie. Readers will tell you that some food scenes in my stories made them feel hungry. So I’m coming clean and saying, “Sorry, I couldn’t help it!” I was hungry myself when I wrote those scenes.

TRC:   Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Dana:  In high school I decided that I wanted to become a writer. At the time I was really into reading romance novels, but I was determined to write literary works. Off I went to university to get my degree, and then life happened. When my second child was just about to enter Kindergarten, I dreaded the idea of going back to work. A friend told me about indie publishing, and so having my husband’s blessing, I continued to stay at home and work at my dream job.

TRC:   What challenges or difficulties have you encountered writing and publishing your stories?

Dana:  My biggest difficulty was/is getting self-disciplined. When my kids were young, I had the excuse of caring for them. But now both my kids are in school, and I technically have more time to work. If I can organize my day better and avoid distractions, I hope to write and publish more books.

The Highland CurseTRC:   Would you please tell us something about premise of THE HIGHLAND CURSE-the
latest installment in your Scottish Strife paranormal romance series?

Dana:  Just to clarify, The Highland Curse isn’t really a paranormal romance. My Scottish series is set in a fantasy world I created. In this 16th century setting anything can and does happen.

With this particular storyline, I play with elements of the supernatural. In terms of the premise of the story, Adrina MacGill has special psychic abilities to see and hear messages from another realm. At first she tries to ignore the otherworldly messages but she discovers that an evil wizard has cursed her clan. Suddenly, she can no longer deny the warnings. Following her inner guidance, she’s led to Clan MacGregon for help. The hero Duncan MacGregon is a very logical, analytical warrior, and doesn’t believe in the fantastic or the supernatural. But when he spends time with the attractive lass, strange things occur around them. All at once, he’s forced to confront his beliefs about Adrina, and the terrible curse that’s placed on her people.

TRC:   Have you ever had the opportunity to visit Scotland for research purposes
or vacation?

Dana:  No, I haven’t visited Scotland for research or for pleasure, although it’s definitely on my bucket list. Right now my only research visits are to the Toronto Reference Library. And you know what? It feels like a vacation because I don’t take the kids with me lol

TRC:   How many books do you have planned for the series?

Scottish Strife Series

Dana:  I’m currently planning to write seven books for this series, but if there’s a demand for it, the series will continue longer, and possibly explore other families.

TRC:   What’s next for your Medieval romance novella series?

Dana:  I don’t have a Medieval romance novella series per se. The two novellas I have were written in an English Medieval world I created for the trilogy. At the moment those sexy Highlanders from the north are calling for my attention. Still, if inspiration hits, I’ll revisit Medieval England.

TRC:   How do you keep your story line plot(s) unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Dana:  Even though my settings are fantasy based, I put in enough authentic details in the stories to give readers a sense of the people, time and culture of the era. For example, 16th century Scotland was known as the “Age of Feuds and Forays” so my stories reflect the climate of the time, although the clans and monarch are make-believe. In terms of how I keep the storyline unpredictable yet believable? I outline my plots, and add twists and turns to keep readers guessing.

TRC:   When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Dana:  It’s both, I think. I have a plot outline, but I’m not so rigid that I would ignore the characters if they urged me to go in a different direction.

TRC:   The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Dana:  In my opinion, I think the storyline has to be a compelling one. You also have to make readers care and/or root for the main characters. If a writer fails to have these two elements in her story, then readers won’t relax enough to experience the emotions along with the characters.

TRC:   Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

Dana:  I needed total silence while writing but then I discovered that I wrote better when there was upbeat pop music playing in the background. I don’t normally use music to influence my story direction, although I’ve found that it distracts my conscious mind and keeps that inner critic quiet while I work.

TRC:   What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

Dana:  In the next five years, I want to double my yearly publishing output, get into Regency Romance, and then move into Contemporary Romance.

TRC:   Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Dana:  My husband is the main person I bounce ideas. Sometimes talking about my ideas helps me to see holes as well as come up with fresh solutions to plot problems.

TRC:   What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

Dana:  I don’t know about authors in general, but I believe that the biggest misconception about romance authors is that we just write about sex. Yes, sex can be in the novels but that is only a small part of it. Many romance stories explore relationships and delve into a complex array of human emotions.

TRC:   What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Dana:  I love Mr. Darcy. But shhh, don’t tell my husband!

TRC:   On what are you currently working?

Dana:  I’m currently working on Griogair MacGregon’s story, which is book 3 of the Highland Strife series.

TRC:   Would you like to add anything else?

Dana:  Just a shout-out to all my friends and fans who’ve supported me and my works from the start. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 3, 2015

Secretly married…to a prince!

Zoe Sarris hasn’t seen Crown Prince Demetrius Castanavo since their secret elopement. So she’s shocked when he requests her interior design services. She’s only just pieced her broken heart back together, and seeing Demetrius–as gorgeous and guarded as ever–threatens to shatter it all over again…

However, the shocking news that they are actually still married changes everything. Especially when Demetrius reveals he wants his princess back…preferably in time for Christmas!

•••••••

REVIEW: The Prince’s Christmas Vow is a lovely romance by author Jennifer Faye. It’s a lovely seasonal story centering on Prince Demetrius Castanavo (of the Mirraccino Islands) and Zoe Sarris. They had fallen in love and married secretly and within two days she’d left a note and run away, breaking both hearts.

This is a lovely romantic story with a heart-wrenching disease at its center. Zoe’s mother has familial Altzheimer’s and she was afraid to pass it on to their children and let her husband down, so she’d run away without telling him why. A year later, he’d become the respectable prince he needed to be and was doing a renovation project and needed her help. He thought they could just work together on this and perhaps he’d get some answers, as well as annulment papers he thought she was holding onto.

That’s the set up. The story is twisty and fantastically romantic as they wind their way through misunderstandings and back into each other’s lives. There’s much story on both sides and they are both still very much in love with each other. The writing is descriptive, romantic and very well done. This is a delightful read and a very romantic tale for the holiday season.

Grab a glass of egg nog…and a few seasonal cookies and cuddle up for a wonderful read and thrilling ride through this fabulous story! Enjoy everyone, I certainly did.

Interview

TRC: Hi Jennifer and welcome to The Reading Café.

Jennifer FayeJennifer: Hi. 🙂 Thanks so much for having me.

TRC: Congratulations on the November 1, 2015 t release of THE PRINCE’S CHRISTMAS VOW (Twin Princes of Mirraccino, book 2) and the October 12, 2015 release of A MOMENT ON THE LIPS (A Whistle Stop Romance, book 3).

Jennifer: Thank you! I’m very excited about both releases.

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow Jennifer: Goodreads/Website/Twitter/ Facebook

Jennifer: I’m a wife and mother. I have two wonderful furbabies, otherwise known as cats. But shh…don’t tell them that. I’m also a writer with a vast imagination. I love to write small town romances and romances set in far flung settings. It keeps things interesting.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Jennifer: I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was a kid. My love of reading started with Dr. Seuss and then moved on to the Hardy Boys and Judy Bloom. When I was a teenager, I found Harlequins and I’ve been reading them ever since. 😉

TRC: What challenges or difficulties have you encounter writing and publishing your stories? Have you considered entering the ‘indie’ publication field?

Jennifer: When I first got serious about my writing in 2007, I received my fair share of rejections. The best ones were the personalized ones. I knew I was getting somewhere when they started to show up. But my dream had always been to be a Harlequin author and I wasn’t about to give up. 😉

As for going the indie route, I have done that also. I’m what they call a hybrid author. I have learned so much from following both paths. I think what I’ve learned from one form of publishing has helped the other side. And vice versa. The best thing about publishing/writing is that I’m always learning something new. 😉

TRC: Would you please tell us something about the premise of :

The Prince's Christmas VowJennifer: THE PRINCE’S CHRISTMAS VOW:

Secretly married…to a prince!

A Moment on the LipsA MOMENT ON THE LIPS:

Welcome to Autumn Fest…sweet treats, entertaining company, and a tender romance.

Piper Noble feels like she’s going places. Her business, the Poppin’ Fresh Bakery, is a culinary success story. Next on her to-do list is expanding the bakery into the vacant shop next door…and starting a new diet, like her mom keeps nagging her to. But when Joe Montoya steps into her life, her grand plans grind to a sudden halt.

Joe’s taken a big risk returning to Whistle Stop. But with his disastrous marriage over, it’s time for a fresh start, including opening a coffee shop…and coming to terms with his troubled past. Though his neighbor Piper looks like she’ll be a big distraction in getting Fill-It-Up Joe off the ground–with her honeyed smile, curvy goodness, and her unflagging determination to grab his storefront.

However, when Piper and Joe are elected as co-chairs of a fundraising committee to help the town’s revitalization project, the hostilities must cease. Joe’s not sure about spending time with a woman who, one moment, reminds him of all the good things he’s been missing, and the next minute drives him up a wall with her stubbornness. Meanwhile, Piper’s looking for the way to this gorgeous but grouchy guy’s heart–maybe serving him one of her fresh-from-the-oven pastries could be just the right start…

TRC: How do you keep the plot(s) unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Jennifer: I guess I’d have to say it comes into play when I’m outlining the story. It’s the first thing I do. I learned a long time ago that it was a lot faster to revise a short outline than to go back and rewrite the book. So if I can outline the story, playing off the character’s motivations as the driving force, then I hope the story will be believable and true to the characters and their desires.

TRC: Do you believe the cover image plays a deciding factor for many readers in the process of selecting a book or new series to read?

Whistle Stop Series

Jennifer: I do believe it plays somewhat of a role in whether a reader takes a closer look at a book. There are a lot of books out there so if a cover doesn’t strike them or the author’s name doesn’t click in their minds, I think they’re likely to move on and miss what might be an awesome book.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Jennifer: Life would be so much easier if I could direct the characters. 😉 Even though I expand my outline until it’s rather extensive, I find that my characters will take their own detours. Plotting by no means takes the surprise out of writing the story. I never know when we’ll be off on an adventure/detour. It really keeps writing interesting.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Jennifer: Oh my. I don’t know if I’m the right person to answer this question. I’m forever wondering if I went deep enough—far enough. It’s all so clear in my head, but sometimes it’s so hard to convey on the page. In the end, I do the best I can at that point in time and then I hope that I nailed it. I wait until my readers get back to me with their thoughts to know if I pulled it off or not. Either way, I do give it my all. 😉

TRC: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

Jennifer: Yes, I listen to music all of the time. Most of the time it’s country music. I’m a BIG Tim McGraw fan. And when I’m writing my Christmas romances, I play Christmas music on Pandora. 😉 And no, it doesn’t really influence my stories. It just keeps me humming along.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

Jennifer: Lots! I have so many story ideas in my head that are just bursting to get out. I either need to figure out how to squeeze more hours in the day or learn how to write faster. I have lots of plans to expand the Whistle Stop series. I have more Harlequin books in the works. I have some other series ideas that I’d love to explore.

TRC: Have you collaborated with any other authors/writers? If not, have you considered such an enterprise?

Jennifer: Yes, I have. I worked with a group of Harlequin Romance authors to write the Vineyards of Monte Calanetti continuity. It’s an 8-book series set in the breathtaking hills of Tuscany. The stories range around a small Italian village and an upcoming royal wedding. It was my first time working that close with other writers. It was very exciting. My book is the second in the series, RETURN OF THE ITALIAN TYCOON. FYI, each book can be read as a standalone as each has its own HEA.

And I also just took part in an 88-author cookbook, WE’D RATHER BE WRITING. It just released. It is full of time-saving recipes and tips. The blurb can explain it better than me:

TRC: Have you ever wished you could find more time to do the things you want to do, rather than just doing the things you have to do?

Jennifer: Most authors juggle day jobs and family responsibilities along with their writing. Because they need to find time to write, they look for ways to save time in other aspects of their lives.

Cooking often takes up a huge chunk of time. In We’d Rather Be Writing: 88 Authors Share Timesaving Dinner Recipes and Other Tips you’ll find easy, nutritious recipes for meat, poultry, pasta, soup, stew, chili, and vegetarian meals. All of the recipes require a minimum of prep time, freeing you up to read, exercise, garden, craft, write, spend more time with family, or whatever.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Jennifer: Honestly, I don’t bounce ideas much. When I do, they are bounced off my editor mainly and sometimes my husband. He has the most amusing reactions at times when his brow scrunches up and he asks, “Why would they do that?” Well, usually it’s because I’ve jumped over the beginning and gotten to the part I’m excited about—the part I’ve just figured out. 😉

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

Jennifer: That writing is easy. These days authors are so much more than writers. Basically they are small business owners. There is so much admin that needs addressed from marketing to bookkeeping to tackling the ever busy email. There’s always something that needs attention and when you work for yourself, there are no office hours. It just keeps going.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Jennifer: That my favorite time of the year to enjoy ice cream is in the winter. LOL. When the hubster figured this out, you should have seen his face, especially when it was snowing and he was standing in line at the ice cream shop to get me a hot fudge sundae. LOL.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Jennifer: I just completed and turned in a book to Harlequin, THE GREEK’S NINE-MONTH SURPRISE. It’s the second book in the BRIDES FOR THE GREEK TYCOON’S duet. It will be out June 2016.

And I’m just about to begin the fourth book in the Whistle Stop series, A MOMENT TO CHERISH…

Wedding bells are about to ring out in Whistle Stop. And trust me, it won’t be your typical wedding. It will be done up in Whistle Stop style. 😉 And if that isn’t enough, there’s a mayoral election underway that’s about to become rather sticky and not from the honey fresh pastries at the Poppin’ Fresh Bakery either. 😉 For years now, Mayor Ortiz has run unopposed, but all of that is about to change. Mason Noble is about to toss his hat into the election. But will his political pursuits endanger his engagement to the beautiful Bella Nez? And are the townsfolk of Whistle Stop ready to do away with tradition? So many questions. So many changes. Keep an eye out for the fourth installment in the Whistle Stop series ~ A MOMENT TO CHERISH coming Spring 2016.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Jennifer: Thanks so much for having me. I’ve really enjoyed my visit. I hope we can do it again. 🙂

But when a beautiful female trainee arouses his jaguar senses, there is no stopping the beast within. He must have her. Even if it jeopardizes the deadliest mission of his life…

When the heat is on—and the claws come out—the heart is the fiercest hunter…

For six years, Nivea has been waiting for Eli to take her in his arms, unleash his animal urges, and claim her as his mate. But once their passion is unleashed—in a reckless moment of pure unbridled lust—nothing can ever be the same. The battle lines are drawn: man versus animal, shifter versus shifter. And Eli must be prepared to fight for his life—and his love—or he will lose Nivea forever…

••••••••••••

REVIEW: PRIMAL HEAT is the sixth full length installment in A.C. Arthur’s adult, contemporary SHADOW SHIFTERS paranormal romance series focusing on a breed of feline shifters known as The Shadow Shifters. This is Guardians Eli Preston and Nivea Cannon’s storyline. Because of the developing storyline throughout the series I would suggest new readers to the series start at the beginning for cohesion, history and back story.

Told from several third person perspectives PRIMAL HEAT continues to focus on hunt for the person(s) responsible for threatening to ‘out’ the shifters to the human race. The Shadow Shifters have long hid their supernatural existence; blending into the communities and societies of man but a new species of hybrid is threatening to destroy the peaceful co-existence between man and beast. What ensues is an act of retaliation and revenge against the Shifters by several of their own kind.

Meanwhile, Nivea has known that Eli Preston is her mate but Eli’s history in the jungles of Sierra Leone have left Eli distant, cold and withdrawn. He is a Shadow Shifter Guardian who has come into a secondary power but with it comes memories and the guilt of a time not so long ago. Taking a mate is the last thing Eli wants or needs but it is the touch of a mate that will calm the beast within.

Nivea is a strong, alpha female who isn’t afraid to let Eli know what it is she wants from her mate but Eli continues to refuse to claim the woman that calms his soul. When Nivea’s life is threatened time and again, Eli can’t stop the need to protect and claim the woman with whom he is falling in love. The $ex scenes are intimate, sometimes aggressive, and provocative.

PRIMAL HEAT and thusly the SHADOW SHIFTERS series is an ensemble story with all of the previous storyline couples and characters in secondary and supporting roles. In fact, PRIMAL HEAL follows several developing and existing premises that intersect throughout the story and series.

The world building continues to focus on the Shadow Shifters: their history; their mating; and their struggles to survive. Now that their existence has been revealed their future battles will find them facing off against a different enemy-one that has already started to pass judgment in the face of the unknown.

PRIMAL HEAT is an engaging and character driven storyline with action, suspense, and some disturbing scenarios. The Shadow Shifters face an uncertain future-one filled with the potential for specieism, discrimination, prejudice and the possibility of a disaster on par with ethnic cleansing. Shifters are no longer safe in the world of man; everyone has been targeted now that their secret has been revealed. A.C. Arthur has written a passionate storyline with an all-too familiar historical formula.

Interview yellow:black

TRC: Hi AC, and welcome to The Reading Cafe. We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow AC: Goodreads /Website/ Facebook /Twitter /

AC ArthurAC: I am a full-time paralegal working for a federal judge, a mother of three, and a wife.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

AC: I’ve been reading since the early days of Sweet Valley High and Judy Blume’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. I graduated into adult books with Danielle Steele’s Star. During my sophomore year of high school I won a writing contest and from that moment I figured why not write stories and see if others enjoy them.

TRC: PRIMAL HEAT is your August 2015 release in The Shadow Shifters paranormal, romance series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

AC: Primal Heat is book #6 in the Shadow Shifters series. It brings to a culmination a war that has been brewing between the Shadow Shifters (a group of feline shapeshifters that originated in the Amazon rainforest) and the Rogues (a renegade group of Shadow Shifters). This is also the story of Eli and Nivea, two guards in the shifter world who are sworn to protect their secret. They’re also falling in love, despite Eli’s resistance. It’s a passionate and action-packed love story.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics) did you encounter writing this particular story?

AC: Not really so much as challenging, but I did take a trip to the Gaylord Hotel in National Harbor since the big fight scene takes place there. I also continued with the research I’d done for the previous books into the various big cats of the world—jaguars, cheetahs, white lions, white tigers, cougars—as they all play a part in this last story.

Primal HeatTRC: How many books do you have planned for the series? Have you considered writing any novellas to ‘catch up’ with some of the previous storyline couple?

AC: There are currently 6 full length books in this series and three novellas (which give a look into the new adults of the shifter world). I would love to continue writing books in this series, but I’m not sure if that will happen just yet.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

AC: I think that depends on the characters. When I begin writing I have an idea of where the plot is going and how it will all pan out, but the characters’ actions throughout the story sometimes changes things up a bit. For me, that makes the writing itself unpredictable and hopefully does the same for the readers.

TRC: Do you believe the cover image plays a deciding factor for many readers in the process of selecting a book or new series to read?

AC: Yes, absolutely. I believe this because as a reader myself, I’m always drawn to the covers first. They’re like a commercial on the shelf for me. I see something pretty or alluring and I immediately want to know what that book is about.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

AC: I outline each book before I begin writing so that I can clearly see my characters’ conflicts, sexual tension and resolution as it will roll out over the course of the book. But again, once I start writing the characters’ personalities really take the lead and while I have a basic road map for them, I tend to let them drive for the most part.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

AC: I think as a writer you have to know these characters as well as you know yourself. If you know them, you will feel what they feel. If you feel what they feel, you’ll be able to convey that on paper and when the reader reads the story they’ll feel it too. It’s very easy to write words, but if you’re not feeling them, they’re just words.

Writing an emotionally charged book can be difficult if the writer isn’t open to these same emotions themselves. We have to believe and feel everything we’ve written if we expect the reader to.

TRC: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

AC: Yes! I love listening to music while I write. For the fight scenes in this series I listened to lots of Imagine Dragons and Maroon 5. For the love scenes it was Trey Songz and Justin Timberlake. If you listen to Spotify I have playlists titled ‘Shadow Inspirations’ and ‘Shadow Shifter: Damaged Hearts’.

I like watching movie trailers, so when I listen to music while I write it really helps me to see the scene in my mind and sometimes the song lyrics influence the character’s feelings and actions.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

AC: I don’t even have three things. I just try to take one day at a time. That goes for each book I write, just one at a time and whatever happens does. I believe that whatever accomplishments are meant for me, I will have without focusing too much attention on reaching them.

TRC: Have you collaborated with any other authors/writers? If not, have you considered such an enterprise?

AC: No, I have not. I’ve been asked this question a lot and to be truthful that’s the only time that I actually think about it. LOL

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

AC: My family. I have a twenty-three year old son, a twenty-one year old daughter, a fifteen year old daughter and my husband. So I feel like I have a good range of opinions for whatever type of story I’m writing. They’re usually pretty good at telling me what’s ridiculous and what has potential.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

AC: That we’re rich! LOL I was just talking about that at my reader appreciation event. There’s a big misconception about how much money authors really make from their books.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

AC: That I would much rather watch old movies than anything current.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

AC: I’m working on a new series titled Wolf Tales and yes, you guessed it, they’re wolf shifters! This will be an even sexier series than the Shadow Shifters, focusing on the psyche of the shifters and what it takes for each of them to really give in to love.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

AC: Thank you so much for this opportunity!

REVIEW: SKELETON RUN is a contemporary, adult suspense storyline from author John L. Deboer. Told from first person point of view-Dr. Jim Dawson- and several third person perspectives SKELETON RUN follows four friends who twenty two years earlier, during their senior year of high school, were involved in a car accident that killed a young woman abandoning her eighteen month old son alone and helpless on a cold winter’s night. Promising never to speak of that night, our four friends will eventually find themselves the victims of blackmail when a deathbed conversation reveals too much information, and one of their own confesses the truth during a run for political office.

John Deboer builds a story of intrigue and suspense using personal tragedy and guilt to reveal the different experiences and resulting fall out for each of our four storyline ‘heroes’, and I use the term hero rather loosely. We follow the successes and failures from physician, and football hero: to governor, and a young life cut short by a deadly disease; lives will be threatened and lost when blackmail and politics take center stage in a struggle for power and the ultimate control of man by the political elite.

The world building follows four high school age students over a twenty two year period wherein the memories of that fateful night burrow into the sub conscious of each man but not everyone experiences the mind numbing guilt in similar ways. While three of the men are unable to forget about the child that was left behind, another presses forward as though nothing had happened to change the direction of his own life and that of his future plans.

John Deboer’s character development is thorough without the use of over the top romantic descriptive narration; their personal demons rarely ride close to the surface but the guilt is ever present and not easy to forget. The past will become their present when the future is clouded in what ifs and the possibility of what is to come.
SKELETON RUN is a well written storyline of mystery and suspense. The premise will keep your attention until the very end; the characters are colorful, intriguing and charismatic. John L. Deboer builds an intense, imaginative and fateful storyline that could have been ripped from today’s headline news.

excerpt

Chapter 1
Late February 1995
Richmond, Vermont
Jeanne Favreau kissed her eighteen-month-old son and put him in his crib for the night. Exhausted from her long day at Bolton Valley, she flopped into her own bed across the room. Sufficient snow on the popular ski resort’s slopes kept the snack bar busy on Saturdays. At least she had the next day off. She quickly fell asleep.
The baby cried, and Jeanne’s eyes snapped open. No light crept through the blinds. She turned on the nightstand lamp and glanced at the clock radio: 10:15. Crap! She stepped to the crib, where Timmy stood gripping the side rail and emitting unhappy squawks.
“What’s the matter, sweetie?” Jeanne lifted him over the rail and held him to her shoulder while checking his diaper. Dry and empty. Then she felt his forehead. Hot.
Oh, Christ! Another ear infection? Probably. With a sigh, she carried Timmy into the bathroom and took the bottle of Tylenol suspension from the medicine cabinet. She closed the bathtub drain and turned on the water. She went into the small kitchen and deposited him into his highchair, where he rubbed his right ear with a fist.
“I know, Timmy. You don’t feel good,” Jeanne cooed, “but Mommy will make it better.” She opened a cabinet drawer, got a spoon, and poured the liquid Tylenol into it. The pediatrician had said he could have a full teaspoon. Unfortunately, Jeanne had become experienced dealing with ear infections. After successfully getting her child to take the medicine, she picked him up and returned to the bathroom.
From the back seat of the Toyota Land Cruiser, I gazed out the window at the passing forest. Though clouds intermittently obscured the face of the half moon, enough light bathed the landscape to provide a contrast between the smooth, untrampled snow and the skeletal stands of hardwood trees rising above it.
My buddies and I had taken full advantage of the good conditions on the slopes, and with the end of the season looming, we wanted to double down and continue skiing into the evening under the lights. But our social director had another idea in mind.
Alan Granger chuckled as he piloted the SUV down the Bolton Valley access road. “Hot babes in a hot tub. Doesn’t get any better than that. Didn’t I tell you? Stick with the Grange if you want to party? Bring your swim trunks just in case? I’m definitely going to give that Tammy a call tomorrow.” Tall and lanky, with a shock of unruly dark brown hair, a handsome face, and a gregarious personality, Granger was well known in our high school as a chick magnet. And starring as a wide receiver on the football team hadn’t hurt.
Bob Kretchman, sitting next to me, grunted and took a gulp from his beer can. With his intimidating size and ferocious tackling exploits for that same team, his nickname of “Crushman” had evolved naturally. He scratched his scalp through his blond crew cut. “Yeah, it was fun. But I can’t see us taking this any further. They’re college chicks, dude.”
“Get me one of those Buds, will you?” Granger said. As I reached into the Styrofoam cooler behind me, he continued, “What difference does a year make, Crush? In seven months, we’ll be in college, too. So we lie a little to get laid. You know, like we usually do.” He laughed again.
I popped the can and handed it to our driver.
“What about you, Jimmy?” he asked me. “Going to give Green Bikini a call? You two seemed to be getting it on pretty good.”
I smiled, thinking of those luscious tits practically rubbing against me as we “got to know each other” in the spa’s swirling water. The girls, Pi Beta Phi sorority sisters, were sophomores at the University of Vermont, all from out of state. They were staying in the ski condo belonging to the parents of Granger’s date for the weekend. Unfortunately, the father and his wife were also there, so we had to confine the frolic to the public hot tub. But we’d all said we would like to get together again in the near future—hopefully to take our newfound “friendships” to the next level.
“The lighting helped,” I replied, “since I don’t look ancient like the rest of you guys. But I don’t think my face could pass for a college stud in the light of day.”
Tom Webster faced me from the front passenger seat. He twiddled his index fingers in his cheeks and grinned. “Mr. Dawson, she’d just think you’re cute. Go for it, man. Sometimes you gotta go for the long ball.” The team’s quarterback turned his broad shoulders back to the front and nudged the driver with his elbow.
“Amen to that,” Granger responded.
“Hey, Jim,” Kretchman added, “you can’t always dance your way through the line. Somebody like me could be waiting for you, stop you in your tracks.”
I laughed at the ribbing, since I was used to it. They had been my friends since grade school. Though in good shape, able to hold my own in the weight room, and certainly not short in stature, I was the “little” kid among them and the youngest by four months. Not to mention my young-looking face. “Well,” I said, returning the linebacker’s grin, “if there’s a hole, I’ll be sure to find it.”
“Good one, Jimmy!” Granger laughed and took a pull from his can.
“And,” I said, “you seem to have forgotten that ninety-five-yard touchdown run I made against Essex. The Burlington Free Press certainly thought it was noteworthy. Didn’t the article say it was a school record? And how about those two—I repeat, two—kickoff returns for TDs against BFA? I can go long, too.” I gave him a light punch in the arm.
“Yeah, you’re a legend in your own mind,” Granger said over his shoulder. “Anyway, those girls do open up some possibilities.”
The car came to a stop at the bottom of the hill before turning right onto US 2. The exit for I-89, the route we’d take back to Burlington, lay just a few miles ahead.
At eleven p.m., after bathing Timmy in tepid water, Jeanne checked his temperature again with the rectal thermometer. 103.6! His fever had risen a full degree. Listless and lethargic, Timmy was no longer crying. Not a good sign.
She placed him on the bed while she quickly dressed and put on her parka. Then she wrapped a blanket around Timmy, picked him up, and went out the trailer door. Along with her child, the decrepit singlewide was all she had left to remind her of her ex-boyfriend, who’d run off as soon as she revealed the positive pregnancy test.
She secured Timmy in the rear-facing infant car seat of her beat-up Yugo and then drove out of the trailer park. The medical center in Burlington, just twenty minutes or so to the west, was her destination. Richmond didn’t have a hospital. But that’s what my baby needs, and soon.
The heavy beat of Meat Loaf erupted from the Land Cruiser’s CD player as snowflakes began to hit the windshield.
Granger turned on the wipers. “Where the hell did this come from?”
“Some freak snow flurry,” Webster said from the shotgun seat.
“More like a freakin’ storm.”
I leaned forward to peer through the windshield. The headlights’ illumination reflected back at us from the fluffy crystals. We appeared to be the only car on the road, so playing Follow the Leader wouldn’t help us pick our way through the wall of white. Roadside lights were non-existent.
“Better slow down,” I said. As Kretchman had implied in his metaphor, I was usually the cautious one. I preferred to call it the “voice of reason.”
As the car rounded a turn, Webster yelled, “Watch out!”
At the same moment, I saw it as well. A dim red glow penetrated the heavy snowfall directly in front of us. A car’s taillight.
Granger tromped on the brakes, but the SUV skidded on the slick asphalt. “Oh, Jesus!” he shouted, and we all watched helplessly, knowing a collision was unavoidable. The heavy Land Cruiser slammed into the rear of the much smaller car, sending it careening off the road and into a stout maple tree.
“Shit!” Granger regained control of the SUV, pulled onto the shoulder, and put the car in park but left the engine running. He scrambled out of the vehicle and headed toward the stricken sedan, his open parka flapping.
The rest of us followed. Snow crunched beneath my boots as I hurried to the car. The initial shock of the collision became full-blown panic as I feared the worst. The Yugo’s right headlight had escaped damage and sent its beam onto the cornfield beyond the tree. The front of the driver’s side of the car had received the full force of the impact. Snow continued to fall, its insulation imposing an eerie quiet. Except for our heavy breathing and the slight tick of the Yugo’s engine, no sound reached my ears.
We gathered around Granger and looked through the shattered driver’s side window. Faint light from the moon revealed a young woman pinned to her seat by the steering column. She wasn’t moving.
“Are you all right?” Granger spoke through the window as he tried and failed to open the door. No response came from the woman who appeared to be, at best, unconscious. “Bob, give the door a try.”
While Kretchman put his bulk into the effort, I went around to the other side and opened the front passenger door. The dome light came on, illuminating the woman, and my fear became real.
The collision had driven the dashboard assembly, including the collapsible steering column, into her chest. Her unblinking eyes stared ahead as if expressing shock at the sudden catastrophe. Med school was still more than four years away for me, but I didn’t need medical training to diagnose the obvious.
Still, I felt for a pulse in her cool, lifeless wrist. “She’s dead,” I announced.
“Oh, my God!” Granger wailed. “What’re we going to do?” He banged his fist on the roof of the car. “Shit!”
From behind me, Webster said, “Look in the backseat, Jimmy.”
Though I’d thought my despair couldn’t get any worse, it climbed to a new level.
Webster opened the rear door, and I leaned in. The infant car seat lay askew but still restrained by the seat belt. The child in it was motionless, eyes closed. Oh, Jesus, no! I put my ear close to the baby’s mouth, and the sound of rhythmic breathing rewarded me. Thank God! I didn’t see any apparent injuries. Granger and Kretchman came around the car.
“I think the baby’s okay,” I said as I backed out and stood upright. “Call 9-1-1 on your car phone, Al.”
“Yeah… all right… good idea.” He started for his car then came back to us. “Oh, man. We should think about this first. I killed somebody, for Christ’s sake! Vehicular homicide is what they call it.” He shook his head. “I’m in big trouble, guys.”
“It was an accident,” Kretchman offered. “Bad weather conditions, slippery road. That car came out of nowhere.”
“And it only had the one taillight,” Webster added. “We’ll back you up, man.”
“Except they’ll say I was going too fast for the conditions, since I rear-ended her. Slam dunk there. And I was drinking. Unlike you guys, I’m eighteen, so I’m screwed both ways. I’m not allowed to drink, but legally I’m an adult. I am totally fucked!”
I couldn’t argue with that assessment, and apparently, the others couldn’t either as indecision paralyzed all of us. I glanced at the baby. We had to do something for it and soon.
“Even if I can stay out of jail and my old man doesn’t disown me, there goes law school. Think I could get into Georgetown or any other top school with this on my record?” Granger put his hands on the sides of his head. “Oh, man. What am I going to do?”
“So let’s get the hell out of here,” Webster said. “You gotta make that call because of the kid, but do it when we’re on the road and keep it anonymous.”
“I think the cops can trace those calls,” Granger replied. “Can’t take that chance. I need to find a pay phone.”
“What about the baby?” I asked. “We can’t just leave it here. If something happens to—”
“Uh-oh, car coming,” Kretchman said.
I looked to the east. The trees lit up from an approaching car that had not yet rounded the curve. We watched as the car came into view and then reached our location. I held my breath, but it continued past us without even slowing.
Maybe the snow had obscured the driver’s view. Maybe something else had distracted him. Maybe he had issues of his own and didn’t want to get involved in our problem. Whatever—his appearance on the scene emphasized our precarious position.
“We better get going before a Good Samaritan or a state trooper comes by,” Granger said.
“The baby?” I asked again.
Granger looked at the sleeping infant. “He’s got a warm blanket.” He reached in to tuck the wool fabric around the kid. “It’s not that cold. Gotta be above freezing.” He gazed at the sky. “And the snow is letting up.” The panic in his eyes told me whose welfare he was really considering. “The kid’ll be okay. He’s not even crying, Jimmy. I’ll call 9-1-1 as soon as we hit town. Twenty minutes, tops.” He headed to the Land Cruiser. “C’mon, guys, let’s book.”
Kretchman must have sensed my hesitation. “Jimmy?”
I didn’t know what to say.
Webster grabbed my arm. “C’mon, man. I don’t like this any better than you do, but we’re all in big shit here. Al’s right. This is the only way out for us.”
It wasn’t right to just up and bolt, leaving the mess behind us. Okay, it was Al’s mess, really. But Webster had a point. We were all involved. Even though I had only been a bystander, I wasn’t innocent. I had been drinking, too, had even given the driver a beer. Because of us, a woman lay dead, and her baby had lost its mother. A terrible thing.
Guilt was one thing. I’d have that regardless. Suffering real-world consequences was another matter. In the short term, I’d be grounded for sure. But I could imagine how this incident could forever mar my reputation. I’d be one of “those boys”—the drunken teenagers on a joyride who killed a woman. And Al, my buddy, was right. He would be in a shit-pot full of trouble, legal and otherwise, if this got out.
Self-defense and loyalty finally won the debate. We could do nothing for the woman now, and the baby would be fine, I told myself. I leaned in once more to check the baby and made sure the blanket was secured around his sleeping form. I closed the door and said, “Okay, let’s go,” then followed the others to the car.

Interview

TRC: Hi John and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of SKELETON RUN.

We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow John: Goodreads / Website/ Facebook / Twitter/ RAP

John L DeboerJohn: I was born in Long Island, spent my childhood in New Jersey, then moved to Burlington, Vermont for high school. Then college and med school in the same city. After that was my surgical training, followed by three years in the Medical Corps. Then I left Uncle Sam for private practice. Thirty years later, I retired and started a new career as a writer. I enjoy cooking, films and film history, playing tennis, politics (I’m a junkie), and the amazing wonders of the cosmos. And, of course, reading.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

John: My parents, both highly literate and authors themselves as sidelines (non-fiction) had to be my most influential motivators. When I gave them a school essay I wrote for them to critique, I could always depend on their opinions. My high school English teacher, Miss Dyke (yes, that was her name), was old school (literally!) and drilled the points of grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation into me. I’ve always enjoyed putting sentences and paragraphs together to make a point. While my surgical career did not allow for much literary expression, or the time to indulge in it, I kept my hand in by writing professional articles for surgical journals and writing the family Christmas letter. Friends and family recipients of these seemed to like my quirky prose and would occasionally suggest I write a book. So I did! And I’ve been writing novels ever since.

Skeleton RunTRC: SKELETON RUN is your April 2015 release. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

John: The Supreme Court decisions that currently allow billionaires to finance presidential campaigns was the starting point in my idea for this novel. I wondered how far someone would go to foster – and protect – this investment. Including murder? In “The Godfather,” Michael Corleone said to Kay, when she sneered at his explanation of his father being no worse than a powerful senator, Kay replied, “Don’t be naïve, Michael. Senators don’t have people killed.” And Michael said, “Now who’s being naïve?” When the stakes are high, who really knows? “Seven Days in May,” “No Way Out,” and “Absolute Power” are three films that touch on this subject. Fascinating – and believable, in my view. Anyway, I start out with three high school seniors, friends and members of the football team, who cause a tragic accident. Not wanting to get caught, they flee and guard the secret. Twenty years later they are snug in their adult careers, when the secret gets exposed and a blackmailer surfaces. One of those teens is now the governor of Pennsylvania, and the man a Las Vegas billionaire has decided will be the man he’ll put in the White House. But because of the blackmail attempt, the governor has to divulge his closet skeleton to his benefactor who decides that, with all the effort he’d expended to make the governor a viable candidate, he won’t be stopped now. Anyone with knowledge of that long-ago tragedy must not be allowed to reveal it. And that sets up the conflict for the rest of the novel.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics) did you encounter writing this particular story?

John: Because I was creating this fictional campaign with fictional players, I couldn’t set the story in the past or even present. It had to be in the near future. But, knowing how long it takes from writing a novel to getting it in print, I still had a problem in this regard. I needed a governor of a state that was important electorally, but not hugely covered by the national press. So I picked Pennsylvania. I happened to have lived there for a number of years, so I was familiar with it. But speaking of fictional characters, I wanted to use real-person Karl Rove in a small part; my publisher didn’t allow that. So I had to work around it. All of the settings in the book I was relatively familiar with, and that didn’t present much difficulty. I just had to make sure that what I described as being extant in 1995 when the story begins was accurate.

TRC: Did your career as a surgeon in the U.S. Army Medical Corps impact the premise of any of your storylines? If so, how?

John: I’ve written other novels in which a surgeon was the protagonist. And they’ve sometimes done their training in the Army. Write what you know? In this one, the main character is a pediatrician, university-trained. But medical expertise plays a role in most of my stories. In this one, it acts only as background, and in the two novels I’ve written since, none of the characters are physicians. So perhaps, unlike Robin Cook, I’m expanding my horizons!

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

John: In “Skeleton Run,” this proved to be a tricky problem. It took some doing to save the reveal for the right time. And it did sacrifice some word count!

TRC: Do you believe the cover image plays a deciding factor for many readers in the process of selecting a book or new series to read?

John: I’m very pleased with what the artist came up with for the cover. I submitted a list of elements I thought were important based on my vision, but she came up with her own idea based on her knowledge of the story. And frankly, I think she nailed it. The cover is what attracts the eye, so that’s a start. But if there’s no there, there, a cover won’t get beyond that. Personally, although I love this cover, I think covers are overrated. I’ve seen really bland covers of top-notch books by bestsellers. Okay, they’re bestsellers; a blank white cover and the author’s name would probably be enough. But I think you know what I mean.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

John: Good question! It has to be both. I write personalities into the characters, who then must act in keeping with them. The writer then has the option of allowing their personae to direct the action, or thwart them via other characters. And who will do what is the challenge. Not the why, because that should have been established.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

John: I think the key thing is to present a situation with which the reader can identify. Not necessarily from personal experience, but from expectation, if the scene/characters has been set up properly. If the emotions of a scene aren’t logical – Why is she laughing for no reason? – then the scene fails. Proper preparation is essential. No shortcuts allowed if an emotional response is important to the scene – and it should be!

TRC: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

John: No, I don’t listen to music. I usually have the TV on in my man-cave (the garage) to serve as background “white noise,” though. And it’s usually some talk show, so crescendos and decrescendos won’t affect my writing mood.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

JOHN: Number one, survive for five years! Number two, get more widely known for my novels. Number three, build that dream house at the beach.

TRC: Have you collaborated with any other authors/writers? If not, have you considered such an enterprise?

John: I tried writing a novel with another author once, but that didn’t work out. Delegation of responsibilities proved to be too difficult.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

John: I bounce ideas about new projects off my wife and a very few friends. Two, actually. I workshop all my novels in an online writing community, posting one chapter at a time. I find the feedback from this invaluable.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

John: I don’t really know. I find only positive responses when I meet strangers and tell them I’m a writer. That usually piques their curiosity and starts a conversation.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

John: If I told you, I’d have to kill you.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

John: My WIP is a story about the ISIS threat to Americans, tentatively titled, “When the Reaper Comes.”

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

John: A big thank you for participating in my “Skeleton Run” book tour!

The Millionaire’s Forever by Sonya Weiss – Review and Interview with the Author

The Millionaire's ForeverAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM

Description:
There are two sides to every Gemini guy…and one of them is red-hot.

Olivia Carter has a handsome, millionaire boyfriend. She’s madly in love with him. The hitch? He doesn’t actually exist. She told the lie to save Forever, her wedding design shop. And it worked—almost too well. As the media attention increases, so do the demands for Olivia to produce her “boyfriend.” With both her reputation and career in jeopardy, Olivia is desperate enough to do almost anything…

Which is exactly what millionaire Mason Parker wants. Thanks to Olivia and her father, Mason went through hell during his teen years, and now it’s time for a little payback—starting with the announcement that he’s her one and only. Now the sexy Olivia has no choice but to do what Mason wants. But none of his plans for vengeance included falling in love with the woman he planned to ruin…

Review:

The Millionaire’s Forever by Sonya Weiss is the third installment in the Men of the Zodiac series.  As with the other two books, its cover is another eye-catching “wowzer.” That’s almost enough to keep me coming back for more. Each book in this series is a complete standalone with no relation to the others.

Since I’m not one who favors the retelling of a story by the reviewer, I will refrain from giving many storyline details. The synopsis for this book is sufficiently generous and intriguing enough that readers will get the gist and be hooked. I truly believe that a book is best enjoyed when a reader is allowed to experience all its surprises, twists and turns on their own.

My thoughts were running towards a light and fluffy read when I first approached this book. However, a very pleasant surprise awaited me. Although the story follows often used plots, this one took on a more serious tone with complicated issues to address. Add in a nicely balanced mix of sexy and smart, sassy quick-witted humor, along with captivating characters, and I quickly became emotionally invested not only in these characters, but found myself immersed in a story that was much more than I expected.

Nothing ever comes without a price and, like the old adage says, “you’ve gotta take the good with the bad.” So when Mr. “Bad,” who’s looking for revenge, walks through her door gorgeously dressed in a suit and tie, it could be a disaster in the making, or a fairytale dream come true, for the girl who told the little white lie!

Cash Mason Parker was her high school heartthrob; Olivia Carter was his forbidden fruit. He was the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks with a reputation for being a troublemaker. Her father was the Chief of Police, who made it known in no uncertain terms that his “perfect” daughter was completely off limits to a guy like Mason Parker. No matter, there was still an ever-present attraction between them. And then one fateful night stole any chance they may have had for even a friendship between them – much less a serious relationship.

In the intervening years, both Olivia and Mason have faced adversity head-on to overcome major difficulties in their lives. Each has worked hard to become successful. These are two very proud, strong and determined characters. They are very likable both as individuals and as a couple, and I had no trouble cheering them on. Even years later, secrets and tangles from their past are yet to be unraveled. They are both struggling with loyalties to family and friends pulling each of them in different directions. But there still remains an intense connection between them that sparks an uncontrollable passion.   And those feelings might be the stronger force that wins in the end.

That magical formula for all those “feels” that romance lovers insist upon for a successful romance — heat, humor, and heart — was certainly present and packed with pure pleasure and indulgence. A well-crafted revenge trope, where one of our characters is determined to get revenge for being wronged in the past by the other, gave this story added intensity for a more notable read – and it just happens to be one of my favorites. Running alongside was also a forced “relationship of convenience” between Olivia and Mason that hoisted the level of tension, antagonism, friction, and passion another notch.

Readers will find some delightfully fun scenes between our main characters. One of my favorites is a baking escapade between Olivia and Mason when they set about to whip up a batch of chocolate-chip cookies. It takes baking to a whole ‘nother level as they join forces. The sassy and snarky banter leads to some rather sexy and sweet drool-worthy sizzle and burn, along with a burst of laughter.

Honestly, I wanted to love this book. At times I even felt it would be a 5-star read. It hooked me from page one setting my hopes high that I had struck gold, but as I read further the shine dimmed a shade. After starting with a slow strong build, the story slipped into a fast-paced rush to the finish line leaving some dangling ends behind. Suddenly, I’m looking at one of those situations where it could have/should have/would have been – if only.

The hero’s favored endearment for his lady love, “Sweet Olivia,” played repetitively and the cloyingly sweet overdose finally took its toll. Without a doubt, I love tender and loving nicknames but too much of a good thing ruins the overall effect and just becomes rote.

Another issue and probably the biggest where I’m concerned, is that the first time Mason and Olivia fall into bed together there’s no condom readily available. But that didn’t stop the fireworks from going off. Ignoring the fact that they haven’t seen or spoken to each other in years, they proceed with just verbal claims to one another that each is clean as a whistle and she, of course, gives a nod to the use of birth control pills. Sorry – this type of risky behavior just doesn’t play well with me.

There were several other places where I had a hard time stretching my imagination far enough to sink my teeth into falling hook, line and sinker for everything as the author presents it. There were some plot holes that dropped the story out of sync with reality. Mason’s strong need for revenge against Olivia’s father lost steam altogether and fell away without a clear resolution. A little more depth in the main characters’ earlier history screamed for more page time in my opinion. Some of the secondary cast, namely Olivia’s best friend Beth, as well as Mason’s three buddies, who shared in his quest for justice, deserved a little more fleshing-out to add some depth to that part of the story. I might have nudged myself once or twice as a reminder that this is, after all, fiction. Still yet, I found a lot to like.

For the most part, The Millionaire’s Forever is a well-edited and entertaining read that leads to a fairly predictable outcome. Readers will be happy to find that they are treated to a nicely wrapped happily-ever-after seven years down the road in an Epilogue that brings this standalone delightfully to an end.

Interview

TRC: Hi Sonya and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulation on the release of THE MILLIONAIRE’S FOREVER.

Sonya WeissSonya: Thank you for having me, Sandy. It’s a pleasure to be here, and thank you!

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Sonya: I am constantly writing. I write to entertain myself and I always have a story circulating in my imagination. I can draw and always wanted to take art classes to help develop that, but never did. Maybe one day.

TRC: Many authors develop their love of writing at an early age. What or who was the catalyst that started you on the road to publication?

Sonya: I did develop a love of writing at an early age, but I kept it to myself. I wrote novels, short stories, fan fiction. I wrote constantly, even making up book blurbs for books I hadn’t even written yet, LOL. Then, I joined a group of writers online. This group had an e-zine. Someone suggested I submit a children’s short story I’d written to the e-zine. I did, never thinking it would sell, but to my surprise, it did. Then I won a Harlequin writing contest so I would say it was actually those two events.

TRC: If you had a choice, which career, other than writing, would you like to attempt?

Sonya: I’d either be a veterinarian or a doctor. Or an artist.

TRC: Your bio states that you are a ‘ghost writer’. Will you please explain to us what a ghost writer does and why?

Sonya: A ghost writer is a writer who writes something and doesn’t get the byline for that work. It can be any type of writing work. The why is because it can be fun, interesting, and most of it pays well. There are a lot of people who want to write but don’t think they have the time or the experience, so they’d rather pay someone else to do it.

The Millionaire's ForeverTRC: THE MILLIONAIRE’S FOREVER is your March 31, 2015 release. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Sonya: Mason Parker is a millionaire determined to get vengeance for what he suffered through as a teenager. Falling in love with the woman he believes is partly responsible for his suffering wasn’t part of his plan.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading roles in THE MILLIONAIRE’S FOREVER, which models or actors would match your ideal image?

Sonya: For Mason, it would be Chris Hemsworth with dark hair. For Olivia, it would be Reese Witherspoon.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story?

Sonya: I did a lot of research on juvenile detention facilities as well as research into speech affected by a stroke. I didn’t really have a lot of difficulties. Just things I had to keep checking to make sure they could actually happen.

TRC: Are the storyline characters based in reality or a culmination of fact and fiction?

Sonya: All the characters are a product of my imagination.

TRC: Cole and Jake are Mason’s best friends. What plans do you have for their continuing storylines? Will we read more about Mason and Olivia?

Sonya: I do plan a continuing storyline, even if it’s just for me and never sells. I already know Jake’s story. I don’t know yet if I’ll have more about Mason and Olivia.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Sonya: I try to keep everything grounded in something that could actually happen.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Sonya: It depends on the character. Some characters will let me shape them while other characters will act in ways and speak in ways that I would never do. They’ll make decisions that are part of who they are and when I try to force these characters into a certain direction, they just won’t go.

Those are my favorite characters to write.

TRC: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

Sonya: Yes. It doesn’t influences the story direction or the characters, but rather helps the characters internal thoughts and feelings to be expressed easier. One of my favorite quotes about music is “Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” ~Victor Hugo.

I have a playlist for The Millionaire’s Forever HERE

Song 1 is Mason’s, the second one is Olivia’s. Number 7 is when Mason realizes what he’s feeling and goes after Olivia.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Sonya: I think the writer has to go deep into the character and show the emotions and the imperfections just like people have. I think that experiencing emotions with a character go hand in hand with having felt those same emotions. We all know love, hate, fear, excitement, and so forth.

I don’t know about other writers, but I know where I’ve failed in that endeavor are the times I pull back because the emotion can sometimes be difficult to feel. For example, in the story, Olivia references her late mother and the the mother-daughter things they would never get to do together. I wept as soon as I reread what I’d written because my mother passed away. The realization hit me that the mother-daughter experiences were forever over for me.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Sonya: I hate writer’s block. For me, it’s usually linked to a story problem. Once I work through the problem, then I can move on. Or, I put it aside and go work on another story. What also helps when I feel blocked is brainstorming with other writers.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Sonya: I’m a big fan of movies, but don’t really like animated movies that well.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Sonya: I usually have more than one project going on. Right now, I’m working on a contemporary romance for The Stealing the Heart series. I’m also working on another young adult novel.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Sonya: If there’s anyone interested in writing either nonfiction or fiction and has some questions, they can feel free to contact me.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 17, 2015

Who is she?

A single photo of herself as an infant on a beach, taken before the date on her birth certificate, throws everything Calliope Pearson knows about herself into question. Hoping to find answers, she takes advantage of her job as a travel writer to make a reservation at the Caribbean island resort in the picture.

Resort security chief Mac Brody distrusts Callie on sight. After all, she looks exactly like his deceitful missing wife, Nikki, who owns half the resort. But when Nikki’s found dead, Mac’s facing murder charges, and he’s sure that Callie must hold the key to proving his innocence.

The deeper Callie and Mac dive into the mystery of her past, the more bodies surface. And they’ll have to learn to trust each other, or become victims of a dark danger neither could’ve imagined…

••••••••••••••

REVIEW: ECHOES is the first installment in Laura K. Curtis’s new, contemporary, adult Harp Security romantic suspense series. This is resort security chief and former police officer Mac Brody, and journalist/travel writer Calliope ‘Callie’ Pearson’s storyline.

Told from several third person perspectives, the storyline follows travel writer Callie Pearson to the Paradis Hotel in St. Martin, French West Indies, as she sets out to uncover the truth behind a picture she discovered following the death of her father. The image of Callie and her parents, taken in front of the Paradis Hotel, is dated prior to Callie’s birth and she has no memory of ever having vacationed on or visited the Caribbean Islands. What ensues is a case of false accusations, betrayal, heartbreak and murder.

Mac Brody’s wife, Nikki Lewis, is missing. A former soldier and police officer with the Atlanta Police Department, Mac is the current head of security at Paradis Hotel, and his wife (co owner of Paradis Hotel) has been missing for nine days. When Callie Pearson, a woman with a strikingly close resemblance to his wife, shows up at the same hotel where Mac is employed, suspicion begins to cloud everyone’s mind. A series of break-ins, thefts and attempts on Callie’s life will find Mac protecting the woman he knows nothing about. Enter Nikki’s brother John Lewis, local law enforcement, a family tree that continues to grow, and rumored connections to drugs and murder, and the storyline takes on a new direction.

The relationship between Callie and Mac begins acrimoniously. Mac does not trust Callie; her timing in regards to Nikki’s disappearance is suspect; and the numerous attacks directed at Callie all point to questionable probabilities. When Callie’s friends back home are targeted, Mac knows that Callie is as much a victim as everyone else. When the threats against Callie increase, Mac becomes Callie’s guardian and protector, leaving our couple together both day and night. The romance scenes are intimate and seductive; there is no erotic sexual imagery.

The secondary and supporting characters include a number of island employees as well as Nikki’s brother John. We are also introduced to Mac’s former army buddy Nash Harper, owner and head of Harp Security, as well as several members of the Harp Security family. There is some definite history between Mac and Nash, one that does not go unnoticed by Callie.

The world building follows a path of clues that lead to a series of connected murders and a psychotic killer. The Harp Security personnel are slowly revealed as well as Nash’s connections, available fire power, and the vehicles needed to transport his charges-all over the world. From exotic island locations to New York, and yachts on the sea, our couple will travel in style while the world around them slowly implodes. Mac will be offered a position within the firm-a position that places Mac closer to the woman with whom he has fallen in love.

ECHOES is a captivating and wonderful storyline of family secrets and dangerous pasts; a suspense-filled tale of one man’s obsession with perfection, and another man’s history of lies and deceit. There are moments of betrayal and pain; heartbreak and loss; revelations and a final resolve. Laura K Curtis will pull you into a family mystery where the sins of the father will be revealed one missing person and dead body-at a time.

Laura K CurtisTRC: Hi Laura and welcome to The Reading Café

Follow: Website/Goodreads/Twitter/Blog

A little bit about Laura K Curtis: Laura K. Curtis does everything backwards. As a child, she was extremely serious, so now that she’s chronologically an adult, she feels perfectly justified in acting the fool. She started teaching at age fifteen, then decided to go back to school herself at thirty.

Laura has taught middle school social studies, high school literature, and college-level rhetoric, all with relative success. She’s also a full-on Mac geek who spent years as a consultant and running an academic computing lab. The only thing she completely failed at in the field of education was attempting to teach obedience to her pack of Irish Terriers. Currently, she lives in Westchester, NY, with her husband and two insane Irish Terriers who have taught her how easily love can coincide with the desire to kill.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Laura: Oh, so many people and things! Probably first and foremost the work of Mary Stewart. There was no romance section in the bookstore in the town where I grew up, so I didn’t realize there were books that focused on relationships. I found Stewart’s Gothics in the literature section after reading her Arthurian books, and I was hooked!

TRC: If you had a choice, which career, other than writing, would you like to attempt?

Laura: I’ve had a lot of careers over the years. I particularly enjoyed making and selling glass beads. I like things that make people happy.

EchoesTRC: ECHOES is the first installment in your new HARP SECURITY romantic suspense series. Would you please tell us something about the premise of the story line? The series?

Laura: In Echoes, you meet Callie Pearson. After her father’s death, she finds a picture of herself taken at an exotic resort as a baby. That wouldn’t be a big deal except that the date on the picture is *before* the date on her birth certificate and because her father, who documented everything in journals and pictures, never mentioned a trip to the island where the picture is taken. So she goes to the island of St. Martin in the French West Indies to investigate. When she gets there, she meets Mac Brody, whose wife, Nikki, is missing. Nikki bears and alarming resemblance to Callie so they team up to find out what the two mysteries they’re investigating may have to do with each other.

When Callie and Mac get in too much trouble for two people to handle, Mac gets in contact with a man he knows who runs a large paramilitary organization: Harp Security Enterprise. Mac doesn’t trust Nash Harper, but Harper has the resources they need.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Laura: Right now? Four. This one, Mind Games which comes out in November, then a story about one of the operatives, then a story about Nash Harper. And possibly a book about Travis, who you meet in this book as well.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading characters, which actors or models would best represent your ideal image?

Laura: That’s a tough one. I guess I imagine Mac as a Viggo Mortensen type in his dark-haired roles, like Lord of the Rings. Callie is an average girl looks-wise. Maybe Brittany Murphy?

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, military, background) did you encounter writing this particular story?

Laura: Oh, so many.

Luckily, research is my favorite thing, so finding out about everything was a lot of fun. I did change the geography of the island slightly to make it work for the story I wanted to tell, so there’s a disclaimer in the back.

TRC: Are the storyline characters based in reality or a culmination of fact and fiction?

Laura: A combination of fact and fiction. Mostly fiction

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Laura: Oh, that’s the fun part! This book definitely veers toward the unbelievable, but I hope it’s moving too fast for readers to care.

TRC: Do you believe the cover image plays a deciding factor for many readers in the process of selecting a book or new series to read?

Laura: I do, and I must admit that I wish this one reflected the contents a little better. But it hints at the contents, and that has to be enough. You don’t get a whole lot of input with a traditional publisher.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Laura: I create the characters, then set them loose to direct the plot.

TRC: Cliff hangers. Yes? No? Depends on the storyline?

Laura: No. Not a fan.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Laura: I think there are a number of ways to do this. The most obvious is to write in the first person. But a lot of it has to do with creating situations that will evoke the character’s emotions so that that we as readers can feel them. If the characters are too shallow, or we don’t relate to them, or we can’t see exactly what they feel, we won’t feel it either.

TRC: Is there a question that you would like to be asked in an interview, but nobody has asked? If so, ask away!

Laura: I can’t think of one!

TRC: What five things would you like to accomplish in the next ten years?

Laura: Settle the conflict in the Middle East? No? OK. Then make enough off my writing to pay my bills.

Toying With His AffectionsTRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Laura: I am pretty open, so most people know a great deal about me. Ask me anything!

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Laura: The next Harp Security book, Mind Games, that comes out in November. And also a contemporary romance, Gaming the System, which comes out this summer. (It’s a follow-up to Toying With His Affections.)

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Laura: I’d love to ask readers something–¦what they look for when they are considering whether to pick up a book buy an author unknown to them?

But when her art is panned as a fraud because she’s blind, she’s forced to seek help from Rick, a man she knows only as a sexy arts writer.

Helping beautiful, determined Caroline prove her art is her own gets Rick inside her well tended walls. But as he wins her trust, he finds he’s losing his heart. Now he has a choice–give up his dream or betray the woman he loves.

REVIEW:

Some background: Mages are a gifted species of people who source their power from the elements. But there is an enemy against their kind, who suck the power and life essence from the mage, known as ghouls. Similar to vampires, the ghouls take down their prey, both mundane and mage, to feed from their blood. Leaving behind a trail of venomous poison in their victim’s blood, those who survive will eventually become ghoul. All magic must be kept hidden from humans and anyone revealing the existence will be punished.

SENTINEL is the first installment in Nancy Northcott’s adult, contemporary Light Mage Wars paranormal romance series-a prequel to her formerly named Protector series. This is mage investigative reporter Rick Moore and blind tapestry artist Caroline Dare’s storyline.

Told from two distinct third person points of view SENTINEL follows Rick Moore as he sets about to investigate the story behind Griffin Dare- a mage who has presumably gone rogue- and the death of his own father for using dark magic. After meeting Griffin’s sister Caro, an up and coming artist whose faith in her brother borders upon worship, Griffin is no longer convinced that the man he is hunting is responsible for the number of deaths and murders for which he has been blamed but Rick’s editor is forcing his hand as it pertains to the investigation. A complication will arise when Rick begins to fall for Griffin’s sister knowing that if she were to know the truth about his investigation, his betrayal would sabotage any hopes of a happily ever after.

The relationship between Rick and Caro is based upon a lie. Rick has been hired to gather any and all information about Griffin Dare and he will use Caro and her family to get what he wants. As the storyline progresses, Rick’s attraction to Caro deepens and he is no longer willing to destroy a family for a newspaper byline. The sex scenes are seductive and intimate.

The world building introduces the magic, the mages, the sentinels and the warriors who are at war with the ghouls and the Collegium. The presiding governing body at the Collegium enforce the rules to which the mage must adhere and in this the Collegium has placed a price on Griffin Dare’s head. We will learn a little more about Rick’s family history –including Rick’s father’s death sentence and the break up of a family.

The secondary characters include Caro’s over protective family as well as Griffin’s best friend Will Davis, whom we met in the Protector series. Will’s connection to Griffin Dare has already been established in the original series so I will not give away any spoilers.

SENTINEL is a quick read that helps to establish some background information about the search for Griffin Dare. There are moments of heartbreak and betrayal for a woman who has spent years trying to defend a brother she no longer knows and for a family whose only son has been accused of the most heinous of crimes. Nancy Northcott blends a contemporary romance with a paranormal edge resulting in an entertaining series for your flights into the fantastic.

REVIEW:

SOME BACKGROUND: The Mage are a gifted species of people who source their power from the elements but their enemies-the ghouls-suck the life force and power from the mage to survive. Similar to vampires, the ghouls take down their prey, both mundane (humans without magic) and mage, to feed from their blood. Leaving behind a trail of venomous poison in their victim’s blood, those who survive will eventually become ghoul.

WARRIOR is the latest installment in Nancy Northcott’s adult, contemporary Light Mage Wars ( formerly The Protectors) paranormal romance series focusing on a supernaturally gifted group of humans who pull their power from the elements. This is mage and loremaster Will Davis and Native American archaeologist Audra Grayson’s storyline. When Audra’s team of archaeologists unearth a 4,000 year old sword from the Okefenokee Swamp, Will Davis’s team of mage warriors is called in to investigate the ‘out of place’ ancient weapon.

The storyline follows Audra and her team as they continue to uncover relics that do not belong to the area. Audra is hoping to clear up her previously tainted reputation that several years earlier ended her career with a nervous break down. What no one understands or knows is that Audra has a dark secret-one that controls her mind and at times her body- that is buried deep within the recesses of her consciousness. Hoping to keep the darkness buried, Audra avoids all confrontation and social interaction whenever necessary.

Will Davis has been a regular throughout the series. A call from the university archaeology department finds Will, undercover as a member of the Georgia Institute for Paranormal Research, partnered with Audra in the hopes of discovering the truth behind the ancient artifacts. But something about Audra draws Will like a flame to a moth; he senses something dark and dangerous in Audra, but not necessarily a part of her control. As the team continues to unearth the relics, lives will be threatened and a series of destructive attacks at the site will set into motion Audra’s introduction into the world of Light Mage and supernatural powers.

The storyline and thusly, the relationship between Audra and Will is very slow to build. Audra fights her attraction to Will- a man with a reputation with the ladies-and therefore Audra chooses to ignore the elephant in the room. She spends most of her time (and the storyline) avoiding any personal or intimate contact with Will and when our couple finally get together, Audra places an expiry date on their relationship. Audra’s constant self-deprecating and low self esteem as it pertained to any potential relationship including her building attachment to Will was oft times depressing and frustrating which made the slow build even slower. Will is a man who avoids long term commitments and it is in his nature to walk away from any potential permanence-I did not feel any emotional attachment to this couple. The romance element was sadly missing for most of the storyline.

The supporting cast of characters includes Audra’s archaeological team, museum foundation advisor Denise Larabee as well as several previous storyline couples from Nancy’s PROTECTOR SERIES including Edie and Josh, Stefan and Mel, Griffin and Val. The world building continues to focus on the war with the ghouls; the demons from the otherworld; and the possibility of another traitor in the Light Mage Collegium.

Nancy Northcott’s gifted world of magic and romance, demons and ghouls is incredibly detailed and passionately spirited. There are moments of heartbreak and betrayal, romance and love, drama and action wrapped up in a supernatural storyline that is imaginative, elaborate and defined.

Interview

TRC: Hi Nancy and welcome back to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of WARRIOR.

Nancy: Thank you, Sandy! I’m delighted to be back. I appreciate your having me here and reviewing my books.
Nancy Northcott
TRC: We would like to start with some background information. For anyone who does not know Nancy Northcott, would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow: Goodreads / Website / Twitter / Facebook

Nancy: I’m a lifelong book geek who discovered Nancy Drew, comic books, science fiction, and fantasy in grade school. I also love mythology and history, especially English, American, and ancient history, and, of course, romance.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Nancy: When I was small, my grandfather and I used to make up stories and draw stick people to illustrate them. That was the start of turning imagination into something that could be shared. My love of stories with a lot of action and of heroes and heroines who have a little something extra undoubtedly springs from my early reading.

TRC: When not writing, what do you do to relax?

Nancy: I read, watch TV, or go to the gym and zone out on the treadmill.

WarriorTRC: WARRIOR is the second installment in your new paranormal series THE LIGHT MAGE WARS. Would you please tell us something about the premise of the series and of the book?

Nancy: The tag line for the series is “Fighting back an ancient evil with the fate of humanity at stake.” Like the PROTECTORS series that preceded it, THE LIGHT MAGE WARS is about the Light Mages’ struggle to keep ghouls, who use dark magic and prey on humans and mages, from bringing demons to Earth from the Void between worlds. If the ghouls succeed, everything that breathes is an endangered species.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Nancy: There will be four more books, at least two more novellas, and some short stories under this series name. It already includes one extended-length novella, Sentinel, and one novel, Warrior.

TRC: Can each book be read as a stand alone?

Nancy: Definitely. Each book centers on one couple’s romance, tracking it from the beginning to the HEA. The bigger ghouls/demon plot develops from book to book, but I always include a brief recap so new readers know what has gone before.

TRC: Do you have any plans to continue THE PROTECTOR series?

Nancy: I’m so glad you asked me that! I know this is sometimes confusing for readers. THE LIGHT MAGE WARS are the continuation of that earlier series. I don’t own the PROTECTOR series name, so I had to come up with something different going forward, but the books are all part of the same external story arc.

Sentinel in THE LIGHT MAGE WARS is a prequel to Renegade, the first PROTECTOR book, and to Warrior, the first with the LIGHT MAGE WARS group. So anyone who wants to start with the earliest events the characters experience and go through chronologically should ignore the series names and read in this order: Sentinel, Renegade, Protector, Guardian, and Warrior. And then Nemesis, which will be out in the spring of 2015.

They’re arranged in reading order on the book page of my website, too, and listed that way in the Light Mage Wars product descriptions with online vendors. Here’s the book page link at my website- Nancy Northcott

Light Mage Wars Protector Series

TRC: How do you keep the plotline unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Nancy: Thank you for implying that I do! I try.

The overall arc of this series was mapped out before Renegade was published. That includes the main couples and the bare bones of their conflicts. While there are only so many types of romantic conflict, the origins of those issues can be as varied as the characters who experience them.

It helps that the story world is intricate enough that I have plenty to explore. Ghouls have been at the center of several books, but I also have demons, mage traitors, latent mages (those whose magic hasn’t yet manifested) and various magical entities I can use. There’s also still plenty to learn about the magic and the mage world’s politics.

TRC: What are your thoughts on cliff-hangers (between installments) in storylines?

Nancy: It depends on what type of cliffhanger it is. In general and for me–though others may feel differently–I think they work better in genres other than romance. When I pick up something labeled Romance, I want to be happy at the end. I enjoy short stories or novellas that may not go all the way to HEA but open the path for it and have a satisfying, romantic resolution to the conflict within that story. But that satisfying, romantic ending is essential for me in a romance, regardless of its length.

TRC: Do you believe that the cover plays any role in the reader’s selection process?

Nancy: It plays a role in mine, so I tend to assume it does for other readers. An attractive cover will get me to read the blurb. If I like that, I’ll read a sample unless I already know I like that author’s writing style. With authors I know I like, I tend to just buy the book.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular storyline and series?

Nancy: Warrior centers on an archaeological excavation in the Okefenokee Swamp, and the hero and heroine are archaeologists. I’m not, though I’ve always been interested in the subject. On top of that, the swamp is a vast (about 700 square miles) blackwater peat bog, an amazing ecosystem very different from anything else I’ve ever seen. It was first inhabited thousands of years ago. All this means I had a lot of research to do.

Okefenokee Swamp

I took several excursions in different areas of the swamp with guides from Okefenokee Adventures, the official concessionaire for the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. These are people who’ve spent decades exploring the swamp. The guides were very patient with my many, many, many questions, stopping or backing up the boats so I could get pictures I wanted, and showing me Billy’s Island, which was the inspiration for Mystery Island in the story.

They also referred me to a man who has spent his career researching the swamp’s ecosystem, inhabitants, and history. In turn, he recommended an archaeologist who has actually conducted an excavation in the Okefenokee. Very few people have done so.

My husband–who sat in a small motorboat on the water in 40-degree temperature at the end of this past February and never complained, so I give him major marriage points for that!–knew a local archaeologist, who answered lots and lots of questions about archaeology in general and Native American studies in particular.

People were very generous with their time and expertise, and I appreciate that so much. I asked all the questions I could think of. I’m just hoping I didn’t trip over one that never occurred to me!

I started visiting and researching the Okefenokee before Renegade was published. I quickly fell in love with the place. This seems strange to all my friends, who know I like my surroundings climate-controlled and my wildlife safely distant, but I find the swamp’s strange beauty truly magical. When the water is undisturbed, it’s a perfect mirror, and that will definitely matter in a book at some point!

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Nancy: It’s a bit of both. The characters are driven by the conflicts, which are designed to push them in certain directions. But within that framework, the characters dictate the ways the story events affect them. For example, one couple will progress to intimacy much faster and in different ways than another. The risks each character takes, and thus the way the story progresses, depend on that character’s nature.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Nancy: Hmm. That’s an interesting question. I can only answer it based on my experience and preferences as a reader, which also shape my writing.

I like to know fairly early what drives a character. That doesn’t mean I need to know the complete backstory in the first 50 pages, but I need to know what emotions spur this character’s choices. What makes him or her shy away from romantic involvement? What does he or she find challenging in life?

I can accept anything as long as it’s motivated, and I need the motivation built in before the moment of the critical choice. If it is, then I roll right along with the character. If not, then I feel as though the book took a left turn while I was going straight.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Nancy: I have two projects going just now. The first is the next LIGHT MAGE WARS novel, Nemesis. It’s centers on hunky deputy reeve (the mage equivalent of a deputy US Marshal) Carter Lockwood and kick-ass builder and interior designer (and mage) Tasha Murdock. They knew each other before, in circumstances that kept them from becoming involved, parted on difficult terms, and have now been flung back together.

The second project is a followup to my micro-story, “The Solstice Ball,” in the Tiny Treats: A Holiday Collection anthology. The story is about a deputy reeve and a mage teacher who unexpectedly connect. I’ve had some requests for the continuation of their story, so I’m working on that. I’m not sure when it will be available.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Nancy: Just that Tiny Treats is free and contains micro-stories by 19 authors. At this busy season, time to read drops off, so contributing editor Trish Milburn thought we should offer people some romances they could read in a few minutes.

TRC: Thank you Nancy for taking the time to answer our questions. Congratulations on all of your success.

Nancy: I appreciate that. Thanks again for having me. I wish everyone at The Reading Café a safe and enjoyable holiday season and a terrific 2015.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 4, 2014

Eve Perroniʼs quest to find her past leaves no time for love, until a chance prediction leads to the seductive Ky Ransom and a destiny that could make—or break—both their hearts.

Reeling from the death of her mother and the realization that she was adopted, Eve Perroni embarks on a quest to find her birth family. A chance encounter with a mysterious fortune-teller leads her to the Australian bush and Cavanagh Cottage, the birthplace of her infamous outlaw ancestor. She intends to research and write the story of her past, but in doing so finds herself in direct conflict with charismatic developer Kyan Ransom—the very man she has been told will fulfil her heart’s desire for a future centered around family…if she will just allow herself to love him.

Ky needs Cavanagh Cottage almost as much as Eve, and he has the money to get what he wants. Every single time. Can these two souls on a collision course find the true love that has been predicted, when everything they are searching for could be snatched away at any moment?

Heart’s Destiny was first published as part of the multi-author boxed set, Seduction – One Fortune at a Time (Cupid Publishing, 2 Sept 2014). This individual novella edition contains several expanded scenes.

REVIEW: HEART’S DESTINY is an adult, contemporary, erotic romance novella by Jennifer Lynne. Originally released in the September 2014 anthology-Seduction: One Fortune at a Time-HEART’S DESTINY focuses on Eve Perroni and developer Ky Ransom.

Told from third person point of view, HEART’S DESTINY follows Eve Perroni as she endeavors to uncover the history behind her birth family. Just prior to her mother’s death, it was revealed she was adopted and is descended from an infamous outlaw. When Cavanagh Cottage, her ancestor’s birthplace, comes up for auction, Eve knows it is something she must pursue. A local gypsy woman will reveal that a man named Ky is her destiny and to be sure to give him a chance. Ky is the man who will become Eve’s only other competitor for the ownership of Cavanagh Cottage. Ky has promised Cavanagh Cottage to someone else and he will make Eve an offer she cannot refuse.

The relationship between Ky and Eve is one of instant attraction, lust and love. The two are immediately drawn to one another as though predetermined by destiny and the fates. It is only a matter of hours to days that each will profess their love and need for one another. The sex scenes are erotic and seductive.  The secondary characters include Eve’s friend and journalist Tom, and Ky’s sister Chantel.

HEART’S DESTINY is a fast paced, interesting and telling storyline that focuses on two people who would never have met but for a death bed confession by Eve’s dying mother. Because the storyline is quick to develop, there is very little personal background information or history with regards to Eve and Ky. HEART’S DESTINY is about one woman trying to reclaim the past; family and falling in love.

Interview

TRC: Hi Jennifer and welcome back to The Reading Café.
Jennifer LynneJennifer: Hi Sandy, thanks so much for having me to visit once again. I love The Reading Café and am appreciative of all you do to support the romance reading/writing community.

TRC: For anyone who does not know Jennifer Lynne, would you please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW: WebsiteFacebook /Twitter/

Jennifer: I’m a mum of four (two daughters, a step-daughter and step-son) who lives in Melbourne, Australia. I work in admin by day, and at night I indulge my fantasies by writing short contemporary erotic romance – often with paranormal elements. I’ve been published by Red Sage and Breathless Press, and a couple of years ago took the plunge into indie publishing with my GODS OF LOVE series of erotic novellas that bring mythology (and sexy Greek gods) into a modern-day world.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Jennifer: I’ve always loved books and reading and in fact have a degree in Literature. Over the years a bit of dabbling in writing became first a rather consuming hobby, and then a professional career. In that time, organisations such as Romance Writers of Australia have had a huge influence in terms of motivation and honing my craft. I’m also a member of Romance Writers of America, and the Melbourne Romance Writer’s Guild which is a supportive group of local writers.

TRC: When not writing, what do you do to relax?

Jennifer: I work four days a week at a university, and yes, I have teenagers in the house, so that pretty much takes up my whole life outside of writing! On the rare occasions I have time to myself, I love reading. A perfect day for me would involve gentle rain outside, a cozy log fire inside, and me on the couch with a glass of red wine, a good book, and one of our three cats on my lap.

TRC: Is there any profession that you would have liked to enter but never had the opportunity?

Jennifer: When I was young I wanted to be a famous gymnast. Then I grew up and decided I wanted to be a writer! ☺

Heart's DestinyTRC: December 4, 2014 is the release date for HEART’S DESTINY. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Jennifer: HEART’S DESTINY was first published as part of a multi-author boxed set, called SEDUCTION – ONE FORTUNE AT A TIME, back in September. The overarching premise of the set was that a fortune-teller’s prediction in each novella would lead to love and hopefully a happy-ever-after for each heroine and her hero.

In HEART’S DESTINY, my heroine Eve has recently lost both her mother and her identity. The quest to uncover her past leaves no time for love, until a chance prediction by a mysterious fortune-teller leads Eve directly into the path of Kyan Ransom and a destiny that could make – or break – both their hearts.

This is a novella-length story, but it packs a lot in to a short space. HEART’S DESTINY is about many interwoven themes – the complexity of family, loyalty, trust, and about the importance of growth and moving forward rather than stagnating in the past.

TRC: Is HEART’S DESTINY a stand-alone storyline or do you have plans for a series?

Jennifer: I wrote HEART’S DESTINY as a stand-alone, but there are a couple of potential spin-off stories that I’m tempted to explore. One is the story of Rasa, the fortune-teller. Who is this mysterious woman who can predict love for others but seems so alone? The other is an historical romance – the story of Eve’s infamous ancestors, Sarah and Joe Cavanagh.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular storyline?

Jennifer: I think the main challenge was knowing that HEART’S DESTINY would sit in the first instance alongside six other stories with the same premise, and yet it also needed to be able to stand-alone. I’m very happy with how it turned out, and have been able to expand some of the scenes in this slightly longer version.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Jennifer: Definitely the characters! Sometimes they take me on a path I never even imagined could exist. I do try and wrestle them back to where I need them to be, but they just ignore me. I’ve learnt to listen to my characters – they usually know best.

TRC: Are you a plotter or pantser (write by the seat of your pants !)?

Jennifer: Pantser, 100%.

TRC: What’s next for your GODS OF LOVE series?

Gods of love series

Jennifer: I’m currently finishing ICE QUEEN, the sixth novella in my GODS OF LOVE series, which I’m hoping to release in January. This is the story of Meika, a former killer whose heart is frozen in darkness. Eros, the god-king of desire may well have met his match – he will need all the combined power of the erotes to melt Meika’s heart.

Ice QueenICE QUEEN was to be the last in the series, but I think there are many story possibilities still to explore, so I’m planning to keep going! So many Greek gods and goddesses with fascinating mythological backgrounds, and of course, so many mortals in need of sexual healing and love in this harsh modern-day world of ours.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Jennifer: I think the key is to draw the reader as deeply as possible into the character’s point of view. Show rather than tell your story. As soon as you inject a narrator’s voice, the reader becomes less immersed in the experience. To give a short example from HEART’S DESTINY, instead of saying something like: “Eve felt excited at the thought of making love to Ky”, we go deeper into her thoughts for a (hopefully!) more impactful experience:

What would it feel like, to be trapped beneath someone like you? To hand over power and control, to be totally at your mercy, thrashing in a parody of escape, only to have every thrusting movement drive you deeper, make you harder. Send you over the edge, taking me with you…

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Jennifer: I’m highly familiar with writer’s block, unfortunately. Our family has had a few health dramas in recent years and I find that the more drained I am emotionally, the less I’m able to write. I used to worry and obsess over it, but these days, I try and give myself permission to take time away from writing when I feel drained. Trying to reconnect with why you want to write in the first place is also helpful. Eventually, if you give yourself time and space, the well of creativity starts to fill once again. I can’t imagine a life without writing, so I try not to worry too much when “it” just isn’t happening.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

Jennifer: In terms of my writing, making the USA Today Bestselling Author list would be very nice! How about we add in the NY Times Bestseller List too? And last but not least, I’d love to be making a living from my writing – that has been my dream for so long, and giving up the day job is what I work towards every time I sit down at the computer to write. ☺

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Jennifer: I was skipping down the grass beside our driveway when I was child and fell down a sinkhole. I had to hang on to the edge of the concrete drive by my fingers. I eventually, somehow, climbed out and the council workers who came out to fix it discovered a leaking pipe had washed away the earth beneath. A terrifying experience that left a lasting emotional scar, for sure.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Jennifer: I’ve started work on a new highly erotic collection called NOT VANILLA. This will include a series of short novellas about fetish fantasies such as voyeurism, light bondage, ménage, exhibitionism and a few other fun little topics!

Then I’ll be heading in the other direction with a non-erotic romance series of full-length novels about bridesmaid myths. To differentiate the erotic from the non-erotic works, my brand-new alter ego, Jen Katemi, will be writing the non-erotic books 😉 Overall, I’m very excited about what 2015 will bring.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Jennifer: I’d just like to say a huge thank you for having me to visit once again, and for those who plan to read HEART’S DESTINY, I do hope you enjoy it.

TRC: Thank you Jennifer for taking the time to answer our questions. Congratulations on all of your success.

Jennifer: My pleasure, Sandy!
