ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 27, 2015

Born a slave, Mercury is an Arena Dog, genetically engineered to fight and die in the Arena for the entertainment of others. Trained as a gladiator from boyhood in a violent world, where men must form alliances and share what little bounty they have to survive, his only goal has been to keep his men alive. But two are dead and the rest are condemned to be hunted down and killed for sport. Worse, their demise will leave a woman Mercury has sworn to protect, alone and vulnerable. And then there is Samantha—a courageous human he has no right to claim. But she is his. He feels it deep in his soul and with an ache in his body he can’t deny.

Samantha Devlin is an indie-freight pilot who has lost everything: her ship, her crew, and her father. When an old friend hires her as an emergency replacement to pilot a cargo carrier for the Roma Company, she’s shocked to learn her cargo is three, living, breathing, and dangerously sexy Arena Dogs. When Samantha learns she’s taking the men to their deaths, she must decide if she is willing to risking everything for a man whose customs require that he share her with one of his men and demands he return to Roma to protect another woman. Mercury, their leader, and Lo, his emotionally broken arena-brother, challenge all her notions of honor, loyalty, and love. Her heart tells her Mercury is worth any cost, but her head sees nothing ahead but disaster.

REVIEW: STEALING MERCURY is the first installment in Charlee Allden’s adult Arena Dogs romantic fantasy, science fiction series focusing a group of genetically engineered slaves and gladiators. This is Arena Dog Mercury, and space ship pilot Samantha Devlin’s storyline.

NOTE: STEALING MERCURY contains M/F/M sexual situations and may not be suitable for all readers.

Told from third person point of view STEALING MERCURY follows the rescue attempt and escape of three fighting Dogs of the RomaRex Arena-Mercury, Diablo (Lo) and Carnage (Carn)-three ‘brothers in arms’ and pack mates whose tortuous lives have been nothing but abuse, fighting and destruction. Due to a lack of females, their lifestyle requires the males of their species to share one female, and in this Samantha has caught the eye of Mercury and his pack mate Lo.

Arena Dogs are genetically engineered hybrids with animal and non-human alien DNA whose sole purpose is to fight for the entertainment of intergalactic patrons. The Dogs are bred to be hunted, tortured, destroyed and abused, and in this our heroine Samantha Devlin-who is not quite human herself- will make every attempt to free the captives now imprisoned in the cargo hold of the space ship she is currently piloting. What ensues is a crash landing on an uninhabited planet where the Roma Company will hunt the escaped slaves along with their female accomplice.

The relationship between Mercury and Samantha is one of immediate attraction although Mercury is considered an animal and a threat by the whip-master and his handler. Samantha sees something different-she sees a man whose pain and suffering pulls at her soul, and in this she is determined to free the men from bondage. Not only does Mercury desire Samantha as his own, Lo’s need for a mate finds Samantha falling in love with both men. The $ex scenes are intimate, passionate, erotic and provocative. Mercury is the alpha male; Lo has sworn his protection and love.

Meanwhile, Mercury’s brother Carn is desperate to find his mate who has been imprisoned by the Roma Company, and Mercury has promised to return to the planet to rescue Carn’s mate. All does not go according to plan when the Roma Company recaptures the escapees with the sole intent to kill at the RomaRex Arena in the Earth Alliance Beta Sector.

We are introduced to Mercury’s brothers and pack mates: Diablo (Lo) and Carnage (Carn) ; the requisite evil comes in the form of whip master Drake, and handler Resler who have been entrusted to ship the Arena Dogs to another planet for ‘disposal’.

The world building follows the enslavement, abuse and history of the Arena Dogs from conception to training to Arena gladiators. Think of the storyline as ‘Spartacus’ meets Star Trek meets Science Fiction wherein the ‘Dominus’ is determined to control his slaves both in and out of the arena. There are some scenes of graphic violence due to the nature of the storyline premise. The Dogs struggle against discrimination and stereotyping, slavery and abuse resulting from a preconceived notion that the genetically engineered hybrids are animals or less.

STEALING MERCURY is a fascinating introduction to Charlee Allden’s ARENA DOGS sci-fi fantasy series. There are moments of heartbreak and sorrow; betrayal and revenge; romance and love. The characters are colorful, engaging, imaginative and inspiring. The premise is dramatic, powerful and intense.

Interview

TRC: Hi Charlee and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release
 of STEALING MERCURY.

Charlee: Thank you and thanks for inviting me to visit today!

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Please tell us
something about yourself?

Follow: Website/Goodreads/v/Blog/ Facebook/ Twitter

Charlee AlldenCharlee: I wish I could say something unexpected, like being an alien princess in hiding, but I’m pretty ordinary. I’m am average Florida girl, living too far away from the nearest body of water. But I’m close to family and I have a fantastic group of writing friends that I love like sisters. For them, I tolerate the humidity and the heat of Florida summers and dream of my own private swimming pool.

TRC: Many authors develop their love of writing at an early age. What or who
was the catalyst that started you on the road to publication?

Charlee: My wonderful grandmother was a bit of a poet. She wrote and recited funny rhyming poems about family and simple, everyday things. I followed in her footsteps writing poetry as a young adult. It wasn’t until much later I got the itch and courage to write something as long as a book.

TRC: If you had a choice, which career, other than writing, would you like to
 attempt?

Charlee: That’s a hard question to answer. I’ve actually done a lot of different jobs and nothing makes me as happy as writing. But if I were to dream a bit, I’d have to go for something like personal assistant to some wealthy, eccentric person who liked to travel to cool places.

Stealing MercuryTRC: STEALING MERCURY is the first installment in your new romantic
fantasy/science fiction ARENA DOGS series. Would you please tell us
something about the series and storyline premise?

Charlee: ARENA DOGS is set at the outer reaches of Earth-colonized space. It’s a place of infinite variety: from war torn planets to wealthy resort planets where culture, greed, and barbarism come together in the form of the arena games. Rich patrons come to watch the gladiators fight to the death. Like the gladiators of old, the Arena Dogs are slaves, unlike their predecessors they are genetically engineered and trained from childhood. They have their own unique customs and are fiercely loyal to each other. In Stealing Mercury, a freighter pilot is hired to transport three of them to a hunt planet where they will be killed. She quickly has to decide whether to help them. Adventure ensues.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Charlee: Book 2 and Book 3 (a novella) are definite, but I hope to be writing many more in the series. The world is vast and rich enough to support a lot of storytelling, adventure, and sexy romance.

TRC: What or who was the inspiration behind the series premise?

Charlee: Stealing Mercury started out as a novella that was never supposed to be published. Another manuscript was driving me nuts and I took a break to write something different. The Arena Dogs came together in my head as I mixed all the elements I love into a big tangle that I could unravel on the pages.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading roles in STEALING MERCURY which
models or actors would match your ideal image for Mercury, Lo, Carnage and
 Samantha?

Charlee: I’m much happier letting readers do the casting!

TRC: Is there a message in the novel that you would like your readers to
 understand or grasp?

Charlee: Thank you for this question! I don’t set out trying to send a message with my books, but they always explore things that are important to me and there are many things on the pages that I hope provoke some thought. The most important (to me) aspect of Stealing Mercury is that the characters must move past the negative and limiting messages that have taken root in their view of themselves and the right and wrong of things. If they are to be happy, they have to learn to accept themselves and others as they are. They must learn to see their own weaknesses as strengths.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you
 encounter writing this particular story?

Charlee: I discovered in this book that putting your hero in a cage for the first third of your story does present some challenges to building a romance. I vowed never to do that again… I won’t tell you how the third story starts.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and
believability?

Charlee: Hmm… I try to make sure that everything the characters (including the villains) do is well motivated and comes from some very real emotion. I believe that, if the reader believes the emotion is real, they can accept its consequences. Samantha, my heroine, is very impulsive and that sometimes makes her do things that could be called stupid or crazy—like stepping in-between two bigger men who are fighting. I try to make sure the reader knows what is motivating her to do that.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you
 direct the characters?

Charlee: As the author, I decide who the characters are and where the story will go. However, if I do a good job of developing the characters, I sometimes have to accept that they would never do something I planned the way I planned it. That just means I have to find another way.

TRC: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music
 influence the storyline direction? Characters?

Charlee: Often I do listen to music. More with some stories than others. Some stories call for a sound track that sets a mood. Others for reasons I don’t understand, don’t need music as much. Even for those stories, the right music can help get me in the right from of mind for a particular scene. I’ve learned never to try to write an action scene while listening to something mellow!

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that
they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you
believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe
writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Charlee: Oh, wow. This is a tough question with a complicated answer. I teach a 90 minute workshop that only scratches the surface of that question! The only things I can say without droning on and on are that writers must 1) engage their own heart in the writing process and 2) learn their craft. Even writers blessed with natural talent can make their writing stronger and richer by studying writing craft.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

Charlee: I see we’ve gotten to the tough part of the interview! I do have concrete, measurable goals in my career and personal life. I’m all about the goals, but it’s getting harder to look so far into the future. The Kindle is less than 10 years old but it has changed so much about the book world! When I do look five years out, I visualize myself freer to focus on the things I enjoy most: writing what I want to write, connecting with readers, and spending time with the people I love. I have always been a rules follower and trod the expected path. This year I shed some of the limitations of that habit by venturing into indie publishing. In five years I want to have left the rest of those limitations in the dust.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Charlee:  I was a slow reader as a child. I failed a reading comprehension placement test in fourth grade because I couldn’t finish the test in the time allowed. I was put in a “special” program to help me catch up and spent most of my time in that program playing backgammon.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

Charlee: That authors have to have some special talent and that since they do, the rest is probably easy. Writing is always hard work, often fun, rewarding work, but work all the same.

TRC: Who is the first person you think about when you need someone to talk with
and why?

Charlee: My mother because she knows me better than anyone. I’ve never doubted her love and acceptance. I’m really blessed to have that.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Charlee: Arena Dogs book 2 and 3 are my focus at the moment!

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Charlee: If readers would like to offer up casting suggestions for Stealing Mercury, I’d be happy to credit them and post to my Stealing Mercury Pinterest page: https://www.pinterest.com/charleeallden/stealing-mercury/ The page already has some of the images that inspired the settings in this book.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 15, 2015

A story of sex, love and rock ‘n’ roll

Aspiring singer Lillie and American rock star Jed seem like the perfect fit from the moment they meet. The pair are inseparable, but Jed’s jet-set schedule of shows and after-parties limits the amount they can see each other. So when Jed invites Lillie to sing with his band on their tour, she says yes. Yes with some hesitation, that is. After finding out that her ex-boyfriend was hiding away a wife and child when they were dating, Lillie’s trust in men is fragile and she also suffers from severe stage fright. As the tour progresses, Jed and Lillie are fast becoming rock’s hottest couple but with obsessive fan girls, a claustrophobic tour bus and a resentful guitarist, things start taking a turn for the worse. Lillie’s dream of singing may have finally become a reality, but can it last? The odds are stacking up against them and then the unthinkable happens…

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: HOW TO CATCH A (ROCK) STAR is an adult, contemporary, rock star romance storyline from author Gabrielle Aquilina focusing on Jed-the lead singer and front man for the hit American rock group The Dead Hour, and aspiring British singer Lillie whose stage fright has held her back-disabling her own dance and musical career. When she discovers her boyfriend of two years is married with a child, Lillie hopes to move forward with her life but never expected to find her future with a man whose own past is secreted away.

The storyline follows Jed and Lillie’s building relationship as Lillie is pulled not only into the maelstrom that is rock and roll, but finds herself on stage as a duet performer with Jed and the band. As the weeks pass, Lillie’s popularity with the fans begins to bloom but her stage fright amplifies her self doubt as both a singer and member of the band.

The relationship between our couple is one of immediate attraction and insta-love where heart-felt confessions happen within a matter of days. Jed and Lillie are inseparable from their first night together. Lillie will quit her dead end job to follow Jed and the band on their trip throughout Europe. What ensues is a sexually erotic and sensual love match that is tempered by the small secrets Jed continues to keep to himself.

The Dead Hour is a rock and roll success but with it comes the excesses of fame, fortune and notoriety. Drugs, sex and hard drinking are an every day part of the band’s lifestyle and there are times when the morning after is not always pretty. We watch as heartbreak, lies and betrayal follow the boys but none more so than for Jed and Lillie.

The amazing, and of times humorous and colorful supporting characters include Jed’s fellow band mates-Johnny, Chris and Eddie; their manager Steve; as well as Lillie’s best friend Kate, whose attraction to Chris sets up another storyline and love match. We will be introduced to Jed’s parents Sandra and Martin, as well as Lillie’s younger sister Tess who has caught the eye of Jed’s best friend and band mate Johnny. Johnny’s personality and antics softens the copious amount of tension that follows the band from backstage to home. There are also an assortment of groupies, fans and ex lovers who pose a bit of a problem for Jed and his fellow musicians.

HOW TO CATCH A (ROCK) STAR is an imaginative and revealing storyline that takes us behind the scenes of rock and roll. The characters are flawed, imperfect and human; the storyline is seductive, compelling and dramatic. From one night stands, viral you-tube videos and paparazzi stalker style images, the boys of THE DEAD HOUR find themselves front and center in a drama of their very own. Gabrielle Aquilina pulls the reader into a storyline that will break your heart and make you swoon. We all want to be able to say that we caught our own rock star.

Interview

TRC:  Hi Gabrielle and welcome to The Reading Café.

We would like to start with some background information. Please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW: Website/Facebook/Twitter/Pinterest/Goodreads

Gabrielle AquilinaGabrielle:   I’m from Portsmouth but have lived in America, Hong Kong and Australia as well as Exeter and Oxford. I’ve had a lot of different office jobs and am a qualified personal trainer, but I really hope to make a living from writing! Now, I live near the sea with my four-year-old daughter and try to resist baking Nigella’s cakes every day!

TRC: Many authors develop their love of writing at an early age. What or who was the catalyst that started you on the road to publication?

Gabrielle: I’ve written on and off my whole life, but I never seriously thought about being published until I went to an event about writing groups at my (then) local indie bookstore. The Oxford Writing Group encouraged people in the audience to set up their own writing groups and a girl behind me, Liah Thorley (now published, too), asked me if I wanted to set one up with her. And so Abingdon Writers was formed! With the help of the bookstore, Mostly Books, we grew to 18 members with a waiting list and encouraged and motivated each other to chase the dream of being published authors. Several of us are now published in one way or another.

TRC: If you had a choice, which career, other than writing, would you like to attempt?

Gabrielle: Ooh, that’s a tough one! When I was a kid, I wanted to be a vet and then a marine biologist… Now, I think I would like to be a furniture restorer or own my own bookstore.

TRC: Your bio states that you teach Combat. What is Combat and what does it entail?

Gabrielle: Combat is a high energy-mixed martial arts exercise class which is great fun and a brilliant stress reliever. If you’ve ever had a bad day, hit a Combat class and get all that aggression and tension out!

How To Catch A Rock StarTRC: HOW TO CATCH A (ROCK) STAR is your first novel. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Gabrielle: HOW TO CATCH A (ROCK) STAR tells the story of Lillie, a bored office temp and Jed, lead singer in an American rock band. Jed invites Lillie to tour with the band after hearing her sing and they rapidly fall in love. But Lillie’s past won’t let her be happy and Jed has a secret which eventually comes out, causing Lillie to do something that Jed just can’t forgive.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series or is the novel a stand alone story?

Gabrielle: There will be at least two more books in the series. I’m working on the second one, which picks up from where HOW TO CATCH A (ROCK) STAR finishes and is about Johnny, Jed’s best friend and the band’s bassist.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading roles in HOW TO CATCH A (ROCK) STAR, which models or actors would match your ideal image?

Gabrielle: I love this question! I’ve always seen Lillie as a young Liv Tyler – she’s incredibly beautiful but not in a really obvious, in your face way. For Jed, hmmm. That’s a bit harder. A cross between Ian Sommerhalder and old school Jared Leto maybe, but a bit rougher round the edges…

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story?

Gabrielle: One of the biggest challenges was keeping the timeline straight. The book changed massively from the first to the second draft and kept changing until the final draft.

I also have no idea what it’s like to be in a touring, up-and-coming rock band so that took a lot of research on the Internet and reading through band blogs to try and get an accurate representation of being on the road.

TRC: Are the storyline characters based in reality or a culmination of fact and fiction?

Gabrielle: It’s all entirely fictional – I suppose there are parts of me and people I know in some of the characters, but I don’t think anyone can write a novel and not include elements of their own personalities and those of their friends in the characters they write. After all, these people come out of our heads – they have to contain a small part of us!

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Gabrielle: You need to build tension, keep the plot relatively realistic, throw in a couple of red herrings and try not to give too much away!

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Gabrielle: The characters definitely direct me! The loudest character in HOW TO CATCH A (ROCK) STAR was Johnny. He just wouldn’t let himself fade into the background and that’s why I’m writing a second book based on him. He’s got a lot more to say!

TRC: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

Gabrielle: I can’t write in silence. I always have music on in the background and, unsurprisingly, the soundtrack for this book was Rock. I’m not sure it influenced the plotlines, but I suspect it had some impact on the characters!

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Gabrielle: I think you need to make your characters real to the reader and to do that, you have to give them flaws but not make them annoying. It’s a fine line! You really need to get into your characters’ heads, describe their emotions, show their reactions and the reactions of other characters to them. The reader has to care about the characters, otherwise there’s no gement. I think it’s all too easy to make your characters too likeable and that just isn’t realistic.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Gabrielle: The key is not to wait for the ‘muse’ to hit you. Sometimes you have to make yourself sit down and write. The story isn’t always flowing and, if that’s the case, ask yourself ‘what if?’. What if my main character has a complete breakdown in the supermarket? What if my protagonist’s best friend betrays her in some way? This type of question often helps to jump start my writing and introduces a dilemma or conflict to the storyline, which is always good.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Gabrielle: Ooh, good but difficult question! I like to eat cheddar and chocolate. Together. I suppose it’s not for everyone…

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

Gabrielle: That it’s an easy job! Realistically, for most authors, it’s not much money for a lot of hours and even more angst and stress. BUT, it’s an amazing feeling to be published and writing is its own reward.

TRC: Who is the first person you think about when you need someone to talk with and why?

Gabrielle: I have a really great group of friends who I can talk to about anything and everything and do! There’s not much we don’t know about each other and most of them have been in my life for more than fifteen years so that’s a lot of shared history. I love them because they’re non-judgemental, smart and funny as hell.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Gabrielle: I’m working on Johnny’s story, which is a spin off from ‘How To Catch A (Rock) Star’, so readers will get to find out a bit more about what happens to Jed and Lillie and also discover a lot more about Johnny.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Gabrielle: A big thank you to the Reading Cafe for interviewing me and, if you read the book, please leave a review on Amazon or Goodreads!

FLIRTING WITH FIRE ( Hot in Chicago #1) by Kate Meader

About the book: Release Date March 24, 2015

Savvy PR guru Kinsey Taylor has always defined herself by her career, not her gender. That is, until she moved from San Francisco to Chicago to be with her fiancé who thought she wasn’t taking her “job” of supporting him in his high-powered career seriously enough—and promptly dumped her for a more supportive and “feminine” nurse. Now, as the new assistant press secretary to Chicago’s dynamic mayor, she’s determined to keep her eye on the prize: no time to feel inferior because she’s a strong, kick-ass woman, and certainly no time for men.

But that all changes when she meets Luke Almeida, a firefighter as searingly sexy as he is quick-tempered. He’s also the second oldest of the Firefightin’ Dempseys, a family of foster siblings who have committed their lives to the service—if Luke’s antics don’t get him fired first. When Luke goes one step too far and gets into a bar brawl with the Chicago Police Department, Kinsey marches into Luke’s firehouse and lays down the law on orders from the mayor. But at Engine Co. 6, Luke Almeida is the law. And he’s not about to let Kinsey make the rules.

•••••••••

REVIEW: FLIRTING WITH FIRE is the first installment in Kate Meader’s adult, contemporary Hot in Chicago romance series focusing on the Dempsey family-a family of firefighting foster siblings who have seen their fare share of heartbreak and pain. This is eldest sibling and firefighter Luke Almeida, and PR representative Kinsey Taylor’s storyline.

Told from several third person perspectives, the storyline focuses on saving Luke’s public persona. His most recent antics have landed him on YouTube and in hot water with the Mayor’s office. Enter Kinsey Taylor-the woman hired to change the Chicago Fire Department’s image and in doing so, tame Luke Almeida. What ensues is a building relationship between two people whose recent histories in the love department has resulted in heartbreak and betrayal. As Kinsey works her magic with both Luke and the CFD, the truth about Luke’s volatile blow up goes beyond a simple bar room brawl.

Kinsey is a smart, independent woman who followed the wrong man to Chicago and now finds herself alone without family and friends. Luke, is an alpha male, who puts family first and in this finds himself in the position to defend and protect the people that he loves. As Luke begins to fall for Kinsey, our heroine will pull away when her time in Chicago comes to an end.

We are introduced to all of the Dempsey foster siblings: Beck and his new wife Darcy, the quiet and secretive Wyatt, model-gorgeous Gage and the only female Alexandra. There are a number of future storylines developing and Kate Meader seamlessly blends the introductions throughout the main premise. Several secondary and colorful supporting players include the misogynistic Mayor Eli Cooper, who may or may not be interested in the lovely Alex; Chef Brady Smith whose military PTSD has left him scarred both inside and out; as well as several fellow firefighters, city hall employees, and the patrons and regulars at the family owned bar. The Dempsey family has a rocky history with the political elite of Chicago –both in the Mayor’s office and the police department-and the stories are revealing a little bit at a time.

FLIRTING WITH FIRE is a brilliant and captivating introductory storyline. The Dempsey family dynamics prove that one does not need to be related by blood to feel the love and support. There are moments of intimacy between Luke and Kinsey; as well as shared family secrets, history and memories between Luck, Beck, Gage, Wyatt and Alex. FLIRTING WITH FIRE is an amazing start to a new series.

Interview

TRC: Hi Kate and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of FLIRTING WITH FIRE, the first book in your new HOT IN CHICAGO series.

KATE: Thanks so much for having me!

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW: Goodreads / Website / Twitter / Facebook

Kate MeaderKATE: Well, I’m originally from Ireland and I’ve lived in Chicago for over twenty years. I have degrees in law, history, and library science, and I write about hot alpha men and the women who can match them quip for quip.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

KATE: When I was younger, I was a big fan of women’s fiction and chick lit, especially authors like Maeve Binchy, Catherine Cookson, and Jilly Cooper. They wrote big, sprawling epics with multiple characters that dug deep into friendships and love. Later, I snapped up Marian Keyes, Jenny Crusie, and Susan Elizabeth Phillips – funny, smart ladies who wrote funny, smart romance.

TRC: If you had a choice, which career, other than writing, would you like to attempt?

KATE: I’d be an historian and put my masters degree in medieval history to use. The problem with that is you have to have something amazingly original to say about twelfth century nuns that hasn’t already been said or you have to like eating ramen for dinner all the time. Neither applies to me, so I’m trying my hand at writing!

TRC: You are originally from Ireland-born and raised. When was the last time you visited the Irish countryside? Have your memories of Ireland inspired any of your storylines or characters?

KATE: I’m a Dublin city girl, through and through, so the countryside doesn’t usually figure much on my trips. As for whether my Irish memories inspire my storylines or characters…I do have an Irish pastry chef in one of Hot in the Kitchen books. Shane has a brogue that drives the ladies wild and a melancholy smile that only the heroine sees. He was such fun to write, though after twenty years in the US, I had to look up Irish slang to get his voice right. I’ve assimilated so much in my time here that I’ve forgotten my Irishness to an extent.

TRC: Your bio states that you were married in a tenth century castle in Italy. Have you considered writing an historical series focusing in and around the castle and all of the romantic tales it would inspire?

KATE: Though I have that medieval history degree, I think my voice is too modern to work for historical. What might be more fun would be an Italian-set romance series where maybe people are renovating the castle and seeing ghosts and falling in love. *Jots down brilliant idea*

Flirting with FireTRC: FLIRTING WITH FIRE is the first book in your new HOT IN CHICAGO erotic, romance series. Would you please tell us something about the series and the premise of the book?

KATE: The series focuses on the firefighters at Engine 6, the oldest firehouse in Chicago, and more specifically on the Firefightin’ Dempseys who rule the roost. There are five of them—four guys and a gal—and they are the foster children of a legendary firefighter named Sean Dempsey, who has already died in the line of duty before FLIRTING WITH FIRE starts. They live by the lessons Sean taught them: fire is stronger than blood and defend the people you love until the dying embers.

Book 1, FLIRTING WITH FIRE, is about Luke Almeida, leader of the Dempseys and all-round hothead, and Kinsey Taylor, ice-cool PR guru sent in by the mayor to clean up Luke’s act after a video of a bar brawl he instigated goes viral. So it’s workplace-opposites attract-sexy firefighters-family dynamics – all the things I love to read in a romance.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series and will each of the ‘foster siblings’ get their own story?

KATE: So far, I have planned a novella and three full-length books, all standalone. Each book will have a primary couple and there will be a hot m/m secondary romance between sexy firefighter Gage and a gruff former-Marine-turned-gourmet-chef that will arc over the three longer books.

TRC: What or who was the inspiration for the HOT IN CHICAGO series?

KATE: I imagined what the cover of my future firefighter book might look like and the inspiration flowed like honey… I’m just kidding, but have you seen the hot-as-the-hinges-of-hell cover for FLIRTING WITH FIRE? Who wouldn’t want to write (and read) about every day heroes with dirt-streaked muscles and blue eyes and shamrock tats and suspenders? Okay, for real now—you could say I found inspiration in a few different sources. I know a few Chicago firefighters personally. I’m originally from Ireland, so I appreciate the bonds of family that are inherently Irish. And I love the show, Chicago Fire! I was born to write this book series ☺

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story?

KATE: There’s so much that can be found with internet searching, so getting the bones right wasn’t a problem. But it was most helpful when I got to spend a day at a Chicago firehouse with a friend of mine, Captain Jerry Hughes. He was able to fill in a lot of gaps that I couldn’t by just watching firefighter videos or TV shows or reading online.

TRC: Are the storyline characters based in reality or a culmination of fact and fiction?

KATE: Completely fictional.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

KATE: That’s a tough one. Readers of romance know how it’s all going to end, which makes romance a comfort read, but at the same time you want to ensure the journey offers the surprises and twists that will keep it from being predictable. I’m not a big fan of drama for drama’s sake. The characters have to drive the plot and make choices in keeping with their characterizations as I’ve laid them out. For example, Kinsey, my heroine in FLIRTING WITH FIRE moved from San Fran to Chicago to be with her cardiac surgeon fiancé because he felt her support of him and his career was lacking. She tried to save the relationship by compromising her own career and goals. I think we’ve all made compromises or settled because it’s easier or we’re in love or we think we are. At the same time, she’s stubborn, so when her fiancé dumps her for a more “supportive” nurse, she stays put in Chicago. No more compromise for her, she’ll make the best of the situation rather than return to the West coast with her tail between her legs. So when there comes a point in the story where she might have to compromise again for Luke, what will she do? How will her past experience inform her future decisions? There’s a fine line to balance here sometimes – people want our couple to be happy but they don’t want the heroine’s personality to be subsumed in the hero’s.

TRC: Do you have any plans to return to your HOT IN THE KITCHEN series? novellas? Updates on the couples?

Hot in the Kitchen series

KATE: No plans right now. I may go back one day with a novella catching everyone up on the lives and loves of the DeLucas.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

KATE: Characters all the way.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

KATE: It all comes down to writing characters that people can identify with, whether it’s a tough-as-nails career woman or a single mom down on her luck. As long as that character is acting in situations that make sense to that character—and us—the reader will want to get on board that train.

TRC: What is something that few, if anybody, knows about you?

KATE: Up until the age of 18, I could speak Irish (Gaelic) fluently. I’ve lost it now, unfortunately, and hardly anyone needs to speak it anymore, but I was quite proud of that.

Playing with Fire

TRC: On what are you currently working?

KATE: I’ve just turned in Book 2 of the Hot in Chicago series, PLAYING WITH FIRE, and I’m getting ready to start Book 3. I’m also working on a series for Entangled Brazen about Texan tycoons who are unlucky in love.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

KATE: Just a thank you for all your support and for letting me chat today!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 24, 2015

Is it possible to expose Chicago’s hottest player—without getting played?

This is the story I’ve been waiting for all my life, and its name is Malcolm Kyle Preston Logan Saint. Don’t be fooled by that last name though. There’s nothing holy about the man except the hell his parties raise. The hottest entrepreneur Chicago has ever known, he’s a man’s man with too much money to spend and too many women vying for his attention.

Mysterious. Privileged. Legendary. His entire life he’s been surrounded by the press as they dig for tidbits to see if his fairytale life is for real or all mirrors and social media lies. Since he hit the scene, his secrets have been his and his alone to keep. And that’s where I come in.

Assigned to investigate Saint and reveal his elusive personality, I’m determined to make him the story that will change my career.

But I never imagined he would change my life. Bit by bit, I start to wonder if I’m the one discovering him…or if he’s uncovering me.

What happens when the man they call Saint, makes you want to sin?

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: MANWHORE is the first installment in Katy Evans’s contemporary, adult Manwhore erotic romance series focusing philanthropic billionaire Malcolm Saint and journalist Rachel Livingston. Set against the Chicago skyline, MANWHORE finds Rachel caught between her job and her heart.

Told from first person point of view (Rachel) the storyline follows Rachel as she is ‘tasked’ with investigating billionaire ‘manwhore’ Malcolm Saint. Rachel’s employer the ‘EDGE’ magazine is quickly succumbing to the recession and a tell-all expose about Malcolm Saint may give the magazine a stay of execution. When Rachel’s boss assigns the story to Rachel, she begins to research everything she can about Malcolm Saint and she doesn’t like what she hears and reads. A few well placed calls and Rachel begins her descent down the rabbit hole where she will loose her heart and her soul to a man who is very different than the public persona.

The relationship between Malcolm and Rachel is one of immediate attraction but Rachel has a job to do. She tries desperately to remind herself that Malcolm is an assignment-one that has fallen completely out of control. There is a definite spark between our couple, one that does not go unnoticed by both Rachel and Malcolm’s friends, and in this there is the usual push and pull between the heart and mind. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense.

Rachel is a woman determined to keep things professional but as the storyline builds so too does the sexual attraction between our couple; there is no mistaking the heat, the need and the desire but in the end, nothing good will come when the truth is revealed. Malcolm is a man who doesn’t do relationships; and his reputation with the ladies precedes his introduction to Rachel. Heartbreak and pain will follow when someone looking for revenge, exposes the truth about Rachel’s assignment.

The secondary and supporting characters include Malcolm’s best friends Callan and Tahoe ; Rachel’s besties Gina and Wynn- both of whom play the devil’s advocate; and Rachel’s mother Helen. The requisite evil comes in the form of Rachel’s coworkers who demand and undermine Rachel’s attempts to stop the investigation; and an assortment of Malcolm’s employees, drivers and professional assistants whose duty it is to protect Malcolm from investigating eyes. There are a couple of potential storylines developing –perhaps between Rachel and Malcolm’s friends !

MANWHORE is an intense, captivating and deliciously romantic read. Katy Evans pulls the reader into a story that is moving and seductive; where ethical and moral dilemmas are only a heartbeat away; where falling in love is as beautiful as it is destructive. The tension and anxiety build while the reader watches the inevitable fall out.

Interview 2

TRC: Hi Katy and welcome to The Reading Cafe. Congratulations on the release of MANWHORE.

Katy: Thanks so much for having me over, Sandy!

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Website / Facebook / Twitter

Katy Evans Katy: I’m Katy Evans, author of the Real series and the upcoming Manwhore series. Real debuted in 2013 as the first in the Real series and from that moment on, I’ve been truly blessed to be able to share my characters and stories with readers. The first book in my new series, Manwhore, releases this month and I’m super excited for readers to meet Rachel and Malcolm Saint.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Katy: It all began when I became addicted to the Sweet Valley High books. As I closed the pages of my very first one, it struck me that all I wanted was to be a writer and share my own characters and stories with others. I wanted to make others feel the things I felt reading, and I also wanted to share the stories that – even then – seemed to pop in my head at night as I imagined alternate endings or plot points.

TRC: If you had a choice, which career, other than writing, would you like to attempt?

Katy: I’d love a career where I get to work with animals all day, especially wild animals. Animals genuinely like me and I’m also insanely attracted to them. They give me such joy.

Manwhore TRC: MANWHORE is your March 2015 release-an adult, contemporary, erotic romance storyline. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Katy: Manwhore begins with my heroine, Rachel, getting an assignment to approach and investigate Chicago’s most notorious womanizer, the toe-curlingly gorgeous Malcolm Saint. What’s great about Saint is that we get a glimpse of him through the social media first – basically, gossip. Before our heroine meets him in person, she judges him based on the exterior persona that he projects to the world. Daredevil. Ruthless. Relentless. A playboy. All true. But when Rachel is assigned to get the “real” deets on him, we get to see another side of him that you’d never expect. And that’s what truly made me fall for him – I hope readers will fall for him as hard as I did too. There is SO much more to this man than meets the eye. He is so much more than a “manwhore.”

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series? Will all of the books feature Malcolm Saint as the leading hero or does each installment feature a different leading couple?

Katy: The first 2 or 3 books will be about Malcolm and Rachel and I’m hoping to continue with stories for some of their friends. 😉

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story?

Katy: It was initially a challenge to take the book where I wanted to go. I had a very clear idea of what I wanted the book to be like, but I wasn’t sure exactly at what point of the story to begin. I played around endlessly until I found some direction from my wonderful beta readers and agent, and from that moment on, the book exploded.

TRC: Are the storyline characters based in reality or a culmination of fact and fiction?

Katy: My stories are a blend of fiction and reality. As they say, fiction imitates real life, and vice versa! 😉

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Katy: I’m a very organic writer, so although I know “what” I’m writing about and have an essential idea of how the book should be, I don’t know anything else. I just sit down and start pulling out scenes the characters start to shoot my way, and sometimes I discard them when I don’t feel they’re good enough to match my vision, and sometimes I keep them but work on them endlessly until they get to a place they want. Sometimes I put them in the wrong place and realize maybe it needed to come sooner, or later, or not at all. So it’s a bit of a discovery process, and then a shaping process to be sure that one thing leads to the other and then to the other…

TRC: Let’s talk about your REAL series. The sixth book is set to release later in 2015. Do you have a title or leading character? If so, are you able to give us a hint ?

Real Series

Katy: The Real book #6 is still in brainstorming stages so I don’t want to jinx it yet. I’m allowing all my characters free reign so it could be a return to characters readers have already met, or a new story for one of the supporting characters in the first several books. I definitely promise to keep you updated.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Katy: Oh definitely the characters. I always start with an idea that seems to come with the character – what does he/she want? That’s usually what starts all my stories. When I know that one of the MC’s wants something pretty badly. And from then on, they direct the story.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writers fail in this endeavor?

Katy: I think that a great book has many elements, but the most important is definitely to make us care about what happens to the character. It’s not the same to watch a car blow up than to watch a car blow up with someone your character loves inside that car. To make that connection, I think we need to dive deep into the psyches of our characters, sometimes to uncomfortable places, to find the truth of who they are and why they are the way they are. Maybe it hurts and sometimes we shy away from digging that deep, but when we do that, it’s definitely when the magic happens!

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Katy: When I feel blocked, I usually step back and leave the book for a few days, and when that doesn’t work, I reread it or ask an author friend to give it a read, and help me pinpoint whatever is not working in the story. Usually Writer’s Block happens when you hit a wall and somehow the writer needs to scale that wall or go around it, or simply change something before that wall so that you don’t write yourself into a corner.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Katy: I’m shamelessly obsessive about certain things and I want them exactly my way or….the highway. Thankfully my husband knows my looks and knows when to let me get my way, and when to set his foot down. Haha

Manwhore Plus 1TRC: On what are you currently working?

Katy: I’m currently finishing MANWHORE +1, the continuation of Malcolm and Rachel’s story, out July 7th.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Katy: Thanks so much for having me over. I’m truly blessed to be able to share my stories and can’t tell you how much the support I’ve received means to me!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 11, 2015

Lucy Callahan will do anything to save her sister, even if that means marrying a stranger. Even if that stranger is an undercover government agent out to destroy the cult holding her sister hostage. Even if that stranger is a . . . werewolf.

•••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: AND JERICHO BURNED is the second installment in MJ Compton’s adult, contemporary Toke Lobo and The Pack paranormal romance series focusing on the Loup Garou wolf pack. This is caterer and human female Lucy Callahan and beta wolf shifter Stoke Smith’s storyline. Although AND JERICHO BURNED is the second book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

The premise focuses on Lucy’s need to rescue her pregnant sister from the New Sinai cult. Randy Butler, New Sinai’s self proclaimed leader has taken Michelle Callahan as his wife and is determined to add to his harem of women in the same manner as the biblical Joshua. When Lucy attempts to escape Randy’s guards while at a local concert, she will come face to face with Stoker Smith-an ATF agent and musician who claims Lucy is his mate. What ensues is the building relationship between Lucy and Stoker; the rescue attempt of Lucy’s sister Michelle, and the revelation that there are supernatural beings who inhabit the planet alongside the human population.

The relationship between Stoker and Lucy is one of immediate attraction but more so for Stoker as he is drawn to the woman whom he wants to claim and marry. In this particular series, male wolves are not sexually active or aroused until in the presence of their mate, and therefore we are front and center for Stoker’s fumbling and ill-conceived attempts to woo and seduce his mate. As a shifter male, Stoker is all about protecting his mate but it is virtually impossible when Lucy continues to search for a way to rescue her sister from a potential Waco-style massacre. Lucy is quick to accept the existence of werewolves and the soul mate connection she has with Stoker Smith but she is reluctant to obey or accept the terms of werewolf mating habits-in this there is a constant struggle between our leading couple.

The secondary and supporting characters include alpha leader Toke (Tokarz) Lobo; Restin-Toke’s second in command; Hank- a wolf whose mate and baby died in childbirth; as well as an assortment of beta, omega and delta wolves whose position in the Pack sometimes makes for some unusual situations. We are introduced to Randy Butler-the man who owns and operates New Sinai, and the man who will set out to destroy Michelle, Lucy and anyone who questions his power and commands.

There are many references to former cults including Waco, as well as references and similarities to the Jericho biblical story. Joshua Fought The Battle of Jericho is a song and theme used throughout the storyline-one that parallels the ATF and Randy Butler’s war against one another. People will die and the walls will come tumbling down.

AND JERICHO BURNED is an interesting take on shifter hierarchy, cult situations, and werewolf mating habits. The Pack is all about protecting their females and the hopes for the next generation. Most of the shifter wolves are likeable if not entertaining; there were a few issues with flow and pacing as the storyline would jump between plot points without a break or lead in but overall AND JERICHO BURNED is an enjoyable and delightful read. If you are a fan of shifter storylines, give AND JERICHO BURNED a try.

Interview blue

TRC: Hi MJ and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of AND JERICHO BURNED.

MJ: Thanks!

MJ ComptonTRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Find MJ: Goodreads/ Twitter/ Website/ Facebook

MJ: I’m married with two adult children. I grew up in the country with legions of cousins (and aunts, uncles, and all my grandparents plus a couple of great-grandmothers). As adults, many of us are still close. I attended a small rural school. My graduating class of about 90 students has produced three published authors, something I find amazing. My junior high school English teacher called me out of the blue the other night to congratulate me. He knew publication was always my goal.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

MJ: Reading has been a major influence on me. And for many years, I read anything. Now I’ve become more selective. I won’t finish a book I don’t enjoy. My local chapter of Romance Writers of America taught me so much. What I learned there helped me focus and hone my skills.

TRC: If you had a choice, which career, other than writing, would you like to attempt?

MJ: I would probably do something with music if I weren’t a writer. Or maybe art, because color is important to me.

TRC: Your bio states you had a 30 year career in local television. What are some of the more memorable highlights?

MJ: There are so many . . .I attended opening night ceremonies of the 1981 National Sports Festival while taping footage for the mayor’s re-election commercials. The US had boycotted the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics, so the ’81 NSF was a big deal. I gave three-time world champion boxer Carmen Basilio a couple of black eyes–with make-up, of course–while we were taping a spot for Golden Gloves.NASCAR driver Kurt Busch–who is currently in the news–was a guest on a show I produced. I spoke with actress Jean Stapleton (of All in the Family fame) on the phone. I got to meet then-First Lady Hilary Rodham Clinton when the CBS Morning Show brought her to town for a Town Hall Meeting edition of their show (and I had dinner with Bryant Gumbel the night before). Oh, and the Secret Service broke some of the dishes in the kitchen set we used for a show I produced while they were looking for bombs. We got a lot of mileage, joke-wise, out of that one.Former co-workers include Al Roker, Mike Tirico, and David Muir.

And Jericho BurnedTRC: AND JERICHO BURNED is the second release in your Toke Lobo and the Pack paranormal romance series. Would you please tell us something about the series and premise of the book?

MJ: During the French Revolution, aristocrats weren’t the only ones to lose their lives. French werewolves were also persecuted. A contingent of them approached the U.S. Minister to France and cut a deal: we will serve your new country if you will give us sanctuary. Werewolves make great spies–superior hearing, seeing, and speed, plus the ability to change form and their inherent viciousness make them formidable foes. The secret treaty was signed and the werewolves came to the United States. Flash forward to the new millennium. The werewolves have made a nice life for themselves in the USA. My particular pack owns a brewery in Colorado (Moonsinger Beer). And the pack alpha also has a country band, Toke Lobo & the Pack. They’re getting successful, too. Things are going well until the government decides to call on them for some treaty-fulfillment work. Very few people (outside of the werewolves) know about the treaty, and it isn’t often invoked, but when it is, the werewolves take their part very seriously.

Except the guys keep running into their mates. You see, in my werewolf universe, werewolves are pre-destined for their mates and once they have found their personal one-and-only, keeping the mate safe is first priority. And since the first two books involve human females, there’s lots of conflict.

TRC: Joshua and the walled city of Jericho is a part of the theme and premise throughout the novel. What was behind your decision to use a biblical reference and song for Stoker and Lucy’s storyline?

MJ: I was pondering how the werewolves could breach a stockade fence and the story of Jericho came to me in a flash. When I re-read the story of Joshua, I found there were several interesting parallels that would work very nicely with my plot–and it gave me a title I love.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading characters in this storyline, which models or actors best represents your ideal image?

MJ: Country music star Tim McGraw was the visual inspiration for Stoker Smith (hero). Lucy (heroine) is a little tougher. Maybe Reese Witherspoon, with really short hair.

TRC: Do you have plans to write a storyline for Hank and Michelle?

MJ: I’ve been toying with another subplot involving Hank and Michelle. That would be in Luke Omega’s book.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

MJ: Right now, four in all.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story?

MJ: Keeping the “universe” consistent and believable was the most challenging aspect of writing And Jericho Burned. I had to keep going back to the werewolf rules I’d invented in the first book to make sure I stayed uniform. Also, keeping one of the sex scenes from bordering on a rape scene was really difficult. My editor and I went over it several times to make sure Stoker’s naivety was clear.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Moonlight SerenadeMJ: A lot of editing. Seriously. I like to use subtle foreshadowing, so I’ll write blatant to get what I need, then I go back to erase until there is only the barest hint of what I plan to do. Lisa Gardner is a genius at unpredictability, and I study her books to see how she does it.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

MJ: My process involves a little bit of each. I tend to be more of an organic writer than an organized one. I try to fully flesh out the characters before I begin writing, but they often reveal things about themselves I hadn’t realized. That’s exciting. One of the most amazing things about being an author is writing something early on in the story and learning why I wrote it later on.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writers fail in this endeavor?

MJ: I believe in the power of point-of-view, especially what authors call “deep POV.” I “become” the character as I write. I ask myself, “what would I be feeling if this happened to me–not only emotionally, but the physical manifestations as well?” If I can get those experiences onto the page, the reader can also experience them.I think some authors fail by staying on the surface of the story and not delving into the meat of emotion behind the actions. I recently read a highly-acclaimed book about life in Germany during the second World War, and I was disappointed by the lack of emotion. The facts were well-researched and the story was intriguing, but there was no emotional depth. It was a telling, not a showing (another favorite author maxim). I also find books written in first person, present tense to be on the shallow side, but that could be a personal preference on my part. Again, this is a point of view issue. However, I don’t have problems with books written in first person, past tense. One of the authors I grew up reading, Mary Stewart, wrote in first person. Her books are classics in the gothic genre.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

MJ: I’ve found if I just keep writing–it doesn’t have to be good or interesting or even relevant–but if I keep writing, I can write my way out of the “block” and back into the story.

TRC: What is something that few, if anybody, knows about you?

MJ: I have a weakness for “bubblegum” music.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

MJ: I’m working on a couple of projects: the next Toke Lobo & the Pack book; a series of baseball romances; and one publisher is interested in a series about lacrosse. Oh, and my critique partners and I are going to self-publish an anthology. My contribution is about a werewolf baseball player. Apparently I have a thing for men in packs/on teams.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

MJ: Love a book? Write a review!

THE HIGHEST TIDE (Eden #4) by Marian Perera

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 17, 2015

One touch, and the tide isn’t all that’s rising.

When brothel health inspector Jason Remerley finds a uniformed woman waiting impatiently in the Velvet Court parlor, wanting to hire a man’s services, he’s struck by lightning. His intense, immediate attraction compels him to pretend his way into her arms.

Enough silver, and most men forget about Captain Lera Vanze’s half-burned face. She senses something off about the handsome, ill-dressed prostitute who sells himself so cheaply. But with his first touch, goose bumps turn to shivers of desire—right before the truth drives them in opposite directions.

Her fury is still simmering when they face each other in a more “official” capacity. She’s joined a warship to stop a terrorist only Jason can identify. Though trust is scarce, they’re swept away in a tidal wave of murderous plots and an explosive attraction that could leave them marooned in an emotional—and very real—minefield.

Warning: She knows how to wield her sword, he knows just how, when, and where to apply his…mind. Contains deception in a brothel, sex in a cave, a shark with a bad habit, and one very large wave.

REVIEW: THE HIGHEST TIDE is the fourth installment in Marian Perera’s adult EDEN sharkpunk meets steampunk romance series. This is steamship Captain Lera Vanze and health inspector Jason Remerley’s storyline. Although this is the fourth in the series, THE HIGHEST TIDE can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty. The exception could be the lack of familiarity with the fantasy world that the author has been building for several installments. Some of the previous storyline characters also make an appearance.

Told from several third person points of view the storyline follows Lera and Jason on a voyage across hazardous waters where not only are the pirates dangerous but the seas as well. Lera and Jason’s introduction to one another was built upon a lie. Working as a brothel inspector, Jason is approached by a young woman looking for an evening of sex, with no commitments, believing Jason to be one of the brothel workers. What ensues is Jason’s desire for the scarred and feisty woman whom he couldn’t get out of his mind.

The premise finds one of Lera’s crew mates ordered by the authorities to aid in locating a suspected terrorist. Kovir Stripe Caller, a seventeen year old Seawatch operative with a shark familiar is tasked with finding an underwater explosive device before it detonates. In order to protect her young charge, Lera volunteers to go with Kovir on the voyage and is surprised to discover that Jason is also along for the ride. What follows is a volatile and dangerous mission where violence, retribution and revenge trigger a madman’s warped sense of right and wrong.

The relationship between Lera and Jason begins as an accidental ‘workplace’ meeting building to friendship then love. Our couple will encounter pirates, kidnappers, storms and a war not of their making. Castaway on an island, the $ex scenes between Lera and Jason are intimate but not overly graphic. Lera is a woman who has been burned; the scars are a reminder of the past; a past about which very few know. Jason’s attraction and need to aid Lera find him on the run facing an unknown future upon his return.

The secondary and supporting characters are numerous; from shipmates and crews to government officials and pirating thieves. We will be introduced (or re-introduced) to steamship captains and powerful industry players. There are moments of violence and revenge; romance and love; intrigue, espionage and suspense.

The sharkpunk/steampunk formula builds upon the premise and genre of science fiction meets steam-powered machinery in an age where technology is new within an alternative history and world. Combine this with the paranormal world of psychic communication with  sharks, you have a classification for the genre of sharkpunk; a belief systems of gods and deities, historical lore, and romanticized mythology becomes a recipe for a fantasy of action and adventure on the high seas.

Marian Perera’s world of sharkpunk is new to this reader. With the combination of steampunk meets the supernatural meets one of the world’s most dangerous predators you have an amalgamation that is sure to rouse the curious and tweak the minds of fantasy lovers.

TRC: Hi Marian and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of THE HIGHEST TIDE.

MarianPereraMarian: Thanks for hosting me! I’m happy to be here, and new book day is always special.

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow Marian: Website / Twitter  /Goodreads/

Marian: I’ve lived in places as far apart as Sri Lanka, Texas and Nunavut. I love spicy food, once wrote Transformers fanfics, and have used my keyboard for so long the only letters that haven’t been worn off the keys at all are Q, Z and X. Maybe some day I’ll write about a heroine called Zyza Quinx and get rid of those too.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Marian: On the fantasy side, Tolkien was a major influence—so much so it took me a while to break out of the traditional high fantasy mindset. I’m glad there’s so much variety in that genre now—other spec-fic authors who have influenced me worldbuilding-wise are George R. R. Martin, Jack Vance and Tanith Lee.

In romance, I love me some Pamela Morsi historicals, Mary Balogh’s prostitute-heroine stories, Lorraine Heath’s Texas novels and Courtney Milan’s historicals. The three most important things I learned from reading romances and women’s fiction are : evoke emotion, stoke the sexual tension high, and create a vivid, atmospheric setting. Anne Stuart, Joanne Harris and Philippa Gregory are excellent at the setting part (among their other strengths).

TRC: When not writing what do you do to relax?

Marian: Relax… relax… yes, I remember doing that once. Well, there are always books that need reading, and I enjoy calligraphy. Learning to make my own bookmarks now…And I collect keychains…

TRC: Your bio states your write fantasy with a scientific twist? Would you please explain?

Marian: A dash of science is a great way to shake up a fantasy world (look at what new discoveries or advances in technology have done to ours, over and over). For instance, what if the last free nation, in a final attempt to withstand a conquering empire, developed germ warfare?

I’ve written more or less traditional fantasies, with magic and dragons, where the main character is a photographer. Or a psychologist. The science grounds the fantasy and the fantasy allows the science to be taken in new and unexpected directions to influence the story.

The Highest TideTRC: THE HIGHEST TIDE is the fourth installment in your EDEN series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Marian: The continent of Eden is divided into five medieval lands which are more or less equal—one nation has magic, for instance, but another has the Tree of Life (that’s why it’s called Eden). But when steam engines and cannons are developed in one particular land, the balance shifts. Arms races begin. Governments plan how to seize their share, if not more, of this new power, and eventually there will be no neutral ground in Eden.

But that’s the fantasy part. The romance side of it is ordinary people competing in races with their newly built steamships, forging bonds with foreigners from other lands—and falling in love. The specter of impending war is still in the background. For now.

TRC: Do you believe that each of the instalments can be read as a stand alone or should the storylines be read in order?

Marian: Each romance features a different main couple, so they can be read alone, but it’s even more fun to read them in order. Fewer spoilers that way, too!

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Marian: I’m working on THE REDDEST WATER (the one with the rabid shark, Jaws meets Cujo) and I’d need maybe three more books to completely wrap it up.

TRC: You have labeled the genre SHARKPUNK romance. What is SHARKPUNK romance and what qualifies a storyline to be labeled as such?

Marian: Just as there’s steampunk and biopunk, there’s sharkpunk. Take the shark away and the story is dead in the water, pun intended.

Only THE COLDEST SEA, coming out in May, deviates from this. Certain species of shark would be fine in the freezing waters next to an iceberg, but their human operatives would die of hypothermia.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular series?

Marian: Oh, where to start?

I researched sailing ships and steamships, how to cause a tidal wave with explosives, shark biology and behavior, how killer whale echolocation works. But writing this series was also a great reason to watch Master and Commander, Jaws, The Caine Mutiny and Das Boot.

The most interesting challenge for me, though, was to have romances between very different characters in each book. That meant, for each couple, the conflict would be original. A serious problem for Miri and Alyster in THE FARTHEST SHORE (she’s what his people consider a half-breed) isn’t an issue for Jason and Lera in THE HIGHEST TIDE, even though those two are from completely different lands.

eden series

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Marian: It’s both. I decide who the characters are—especially the traits that will bring them into conflict with each other, like Lera’s directness vs. Jason’s, um, creative interpretation of the truth—but after that, they’re on their own. The stories just wouldn’t work without those particular characters.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writers fail in this endeavor?

Marian: Give readers something they can identify with. I love romances where either the hero or heroine must carefully save their money, or where the heroine’s community disapproves of her independence. I understand both of those, and I sympathize muchly. But at the same time, some of the keepers on my romance shelves feature unusual professions or locales or characters. I find those just as intriguing, in a different way. What’s different is often fascinating.

Fails are when the characters do nothing interesting at the start; I once read a soulmate romance which began with the hero moping because he hadn’t met his True Love yet. I like characters with practical goals beyond “get married and live happily ever after”. Also, while flaws are fine, some of my pet peeves are misogynistic heroes and women so overwhelmed by a man’s hotness that they constantly blush, stammer and trip over their own feet.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Marian: I always have other ideas in mind, so I could work on those projects instead. But nearly always, writers’ block means there’s some issue with the story that I haven’t consciously identified just yet.

With THE COLDEST SEA, I originally had the heroine leaving home because she didn’t want to marry a certain man. Then she met the hero and was attracted to him. After four chapters I knew this setup wasn’t working, because there was no conflict.

I wrote out ideas for such conflict in a dialogue-with-myself form, and then realized the answer: yes, she’s still leaving home. But it’s because her fiance didn’t want to marry her; he jilted her. She’s still in love with him, though, and she believes if she just waits long enough, he’ll realize he was wrong. Now, when she meets the hero, she’s torn between him and her ex-fiance. After that, the story wrote itself.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Marian: Just ideas? I don’t. To me, the idea is the starting point—I still need characters, plot and setting, at a minimum. I have dozens of ideas, and rarely need feedback on those because almost any idea could be made into a good story (unless the idea is something out of How Not To Write A Novel). It’s the execution that matters.

That said, I find the Absolute Write forums invaluable in terms of discussion with other writers, and especially for technical information. I’ve asked lots of questions there on topics as diverse as developing photographs from glass plates and the explosive potential of flour, and have received a lot of helpfuul information.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

Marian:
Write a fantasy novel and query that.
Visit either France or Japan.
Clean out the attic. If no one sees or hears of me after year five, you’ll know what happened.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Marian: While Marian has always been my legal first name, no one ever used it until I turned 18.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Marian: The next Eden novel and a Christmas romance, one of a trilogy inspired by A Christmas Carol. Each features a ghost from the original story.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Marian: I blog about writing and publishing my favorite genres at Flights of Fantasy and have long juicy excerpts of my books at Marian Perera.com. I’m also trying to Tweet more, so look me up @MDPerera.

The Affair 1-8

ABOUT THE BOOK: Serial Release Dates September 16 –November 4, 2014

Innocent yet unconventional hospice nurse Emma Shore has secured a new position at The Breakers, the sprawling mansion of enigmatic and dangerously handsome racecar billionaire Michael Montand. Hired as caretaker for Montand’s stepmother, Emma expects few complications. But one night, lost in the mansion’s maze of corridors, she comes upon a woman and a man she can’t identify engaged in a raw, naked interlude of sexual subjugation. Silently, from the shadows, Emma watches – shocked, appalled, and unnervingly aroused.

But Emma wonders… if this mysterious stranger is not Montand, then who is it? And what other surprises are in store for her? Night after sleepless night, she’s considering the possibilities. And for the first time in her life, she’s not going to run away from them.

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE AFFAIR is the latest contemporary, erotic romance serial by Beth Kery. Released as an eight part serial THE AFFAIR focuses on hospice nurse Emma Shore and billionaire/racecar owner /developer Michael Montand.

Told from close third person point of view, the eight part storyline follows the building relationship between Emma and Michael. Emma’s position within the Montand household has an expiry date-hired to care for Michael’s dying step mother, Emma ‘accidentally’ witnesses Michael and another woman in a BDSM scene. Both turned off and turned on, Emma will come face to face with the man who would eventually bring Emma into his world. When Emma walks in on her boyfriend of two years having sex with another woman, Emma is free to explore what it is she truly wants.

The relationship between Emma and Michael begins as employer and employee but soon develops into something more. When Michael tells Emma he doesn’t do relationships and the only thing he can offer is sex, Emma offers Michael five weeks of sex and adventure then she will walk away. Michael will soon realize that five weeks with Emma is not enough-he wants a lifetime. The sex scenes are numerous, intimate and provocative.

THE AFFAIR is also a story of family, betrayal and letting go. There are moments of heartbreaking sorrow for a man who has lost everyone that he has loved and in return was rejected by the one person who should have been there from the start. Michael’s family is the epitome of dysfunctional and in this he is a man who will not commit to something more.

The world building brings the reader onto the racecar circuit and Grand Prix tours of Europe. The secondary characters include both Emma and Michael’s extended family members, friends and frenemies. Everyone has an agenda or a connection to the past.

The writing style is simple. There is no over the top angst or anxiety as the outcome is predictable. The BDSM premise is secondary to the storyline but it does command a good portion of the story. Michael’s persona did not scream Dominant but more of a need to control the world around him. The billionaire Dom and inexperienced sub is a familiar scenario. There are no hardcore BDSM scenes, no safe words, no anxious moments or questions of consent.

THE AFFAIR is an erotic romance storyline with a happily ever after. Fans of Beth Kery will recognize her signature BDSM storyline trope and you can’t help but fall in love with her leading characters.

Interview 1

TRC:  Hi Beth and welcome back to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of THE AFFAIR.

Beth:  Thank you, and I’m very happy to be here.

TRC:  We would like to start with some background information. For anyone who does not know BETH KERY, would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow: GoodreadsTwitter/Website / Facebook

Beth KeryBeth:  Sure. I worked as a psychologist for years before leaving and becoming a romance writer. Some say it’s a strange combination of professions, but I think anyone who does either job might realize the similarities. Like a psychologist, writers are usually keen observers of character and the dynamics of relationship and emotion. I’ve written around forty novels to date, along with several novellas, and prefer the contemporary romance/erotic romance genres. I’ve lived in downtown Chicago for too many years to name, and love the culture and energy of the city. However, I’m originally a small town girl, and love the country as well. When it comes down to it, I’d be hard pressed to say whether I prefer a bustling city or a mountain retreat.

TRC:  Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Beth:  Certainly my mother, who read to me in the womb I think, and is an avid reader herself. There were books everywhere in my house growing up. Books were impossible to ignore. My father, too, was a big reader. Although I read in all genres, I had the feeling I could write romance. I’m not sure why. I just got the pace and process of it. I’d definitely have to mention romance authors as influencing me. I loved Sandra Brown, Julie Garwood, Jude Deveraux, Emma Holly, Jaci Burton and many, many more throughout the years. Some people say work hard, play hard, but I’d say work hard, read hard. For me, a good romance was like a gift certificate to the spa or a gift of premium chocolate—permission to indulge.

TRC:  When not writing, what do you do to relax?

Beth:  Surf and shop the internet, watch favorite shows like Downton Abbey, 30 Rock or Grimm, shop (at real stores!) with friends or family, go to the Art Institute or Chicago History Museum, walk in Chicago or along the beaches of Lake Tahoe, keep in touch with friends and family via phone, text or Viber, read a book.

TRC:  THE AFFAIR is an eight-part erotic serial focusing on Emma Shore and the enigmatic Montand. Would you please tell us something about the premise of the series?

The Affair 1-8Beth:  Sure. Although on the surface THE AFFAIR is a super sexy love story, it’s also a book about grief and forgiveness, about finding the strength and will to live and love again. The hero and heroine are Michael Montand and Emma Shore—two characters that I truly came to adore. They are so perfect for one another. Emma has a bone deep, eternal strength about her. Montand calls her fey. Because of an experience she had with death early in life, she has this sort of grace and calmness about her. As a hospice nurse, she deals with issues on a daily basis that most people would run from. It’s her peace, unconventionality and strength that calls out to Montand.

Montand, on the other hand, is cynical about almost everything. He’s experienced terrible loss and grief throughout his life, including the death of his twin brother in a drowning accident where Montand was present and survived. So he carries a great deal of survivor guilt. Emma and Montand are quite a character contrast, but the rub off on each other. They learn from each other, and grow into better people during the journey of the book. At its core, I believe that THE AFFAIR is incredibly romantic. Yes, it’s erotic, but there is such tenderness between this couple, such poignant, sweet moments. Those ephemeral moments of romance between Emma and Montand are what I prize most about the book.

TRC:  What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story?

Beth:  THE AFFAIR is a serial, which means it was released in eight parts over eight weeks’ time. It was very arduous to write. It’s the size of two books in length. Plus, it’s a very emotional story. The serial format is very tricky to do in general, much more mentally challenging for me then a regular, linear novel. Despite what many people might think, the serial is not a regular novel that’s been chopped up into pieces. THE AFFAIR was written as a serial and is meant to be consumed over an eight-week period. I’ve told the story to coincide with the first eight weeks of Michael and Emma’s relationship, so that each week of the serial is a week of their love affair. There were times I didn’t think the time element would work. It’s like doing a rubric’s cube to get everything to fit just right into the time allotment and weekly installment. I eventually got it, and everything clicked into place. By the end of it, I was kind of wrung out, and at the same time, extremely happy with the results.

TRC:  If you could virtually cast the leading characters, which models or actors would best suit your ideal image?

Beth:  They both are solely from my imagination, but I thought Carey Mulligan was a great fit for Emma—strong, fresh, a little fey. As for Michael, he was more challenging to find a look-alike for. I imagine him as a European-type—a real Mediterranean God, so to speak. Strictly on a physical characteristic basis, I chose Theo Theodoridis on my Pinterest The Affair page as being akin in looks to Michael Montand. Beautiful. Tragic.

TRC: Theo is definitely tragic and beautiful.

TRC:  Do you have plans to continue the series? Spin-off?

Beth:  I’d love to tell Niki Dellis’s story. I have something special in mind for him. However, I have not contracted for a Niki-book to date.

TRC:  You were one of the first author’s to venture into the serialized storyline format. What do you believe is the appeal of the serial format?

Beth:  One thing that the serial has highlighted for me is the reminder that there are many different types of readers out there. Not all readers are the type to consume a novel in hours or in one night. There are people who really enjoy the serial’s pace and the anticipation of waiting for the next installment. Busy, mobile people often enjoy this shorter, episodic version of consuming a book. Also, people write to me and say that they have never been a big reader, or haven’t really read since high school, but they enjoy the serial. They feel positively reinforced for completing an installment when they have struggled finishing an entire novel. That positive reinforcement makes them want to read the next week’s part. The serial offers an alternative way of reading, and I believe it hits a different market. Of course the rabid readers can love the serial too. I hear from many several-books-a-week readers who follow the serial because it’s fun and a change of pace.

TRC:  What do you believe is the ‘down’ side of the serial format?

Beth:  Probably that the rabid booklover can feel unfulfilled by the weekly episode. They want to continue when they want to continue. I completely understand that. The serial isn’t for everyone. The one thing that I tell people who feel unsatisfied with the serial is, the traditional book will always be available to them. The serial isn’t a threat to traditional reading any more than an e-book is a threat to a print book. When a reader says to me, “I just don’t get the point of the serial. Why not just publish it all at once?” I say simply, there are people who like the serial for the reasons I’ve stated above. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it really works for some. Plus, even for the most rabid reader, the serial has the advantage of coming out quicker and being available for reading before the traditionally published novel.

TRC:  Are any of your characters or the premises (of any or all of your books) based in reality or a combination of reality and fiction?

Beth:  None of my characters come from reality. They are products of my imagination. The thing about my characters and plots that is based in reality is that I’m very aware of people’s coping styles, their defense mechanisms and both healthy and dysfunctional ways of dealing with emotional angst or stress. That’s why I think there’s a decent level of reality to my characters, despite the fact that I’m writing a romantic fantasy.

TRC:  What are your thoughts on writing a series and ending an installment with a major cliff hanger?

Beth:  In regard to the serial? I’ve changed my opinion a lot on cliffhangers now that I’ve done three serials. I used to think each episode should dangle in the midst of the scene at the conclusion of the episode. Although there are still some cliffhangers today in my serial, I’ve come to realize that it’s not entirely necessary to create anticipation and excitement for the reader. If the reader is invested enough in the characters and their romance, it’s enough of a cliffhanger. Today in my serials, there are many installments that come to a fulfilling temporary conclusion. In regard to a traditional novel and a series, I try to avoid the cliffhanger as much as possible. For instance, I’m currently writing a story that has a two-book arc called GLIMMER and GLOW. This is one really large and developed story, and it took me two books to write it. So at the end of GLIMMER, while it is obvious that there is more story to tell, I attempted to bring it to a satisfactory climax between the hero and heroine, a temporary resting point. I didn’t want to leave the reader in too much anxiety over the wait between books.

TRC:  When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Beth:  That’s a good question. I like to think I control things, but there are many times a character develops a mind of their own. Michael Montand, for instance, from THE AFFAIR was originally cast as much more cynical and aloof. But then he started interacting with Emma, and she’s so fresh and unexpected that he started revealing more of himself than I’d anticipated. He began to show his need for her much more intensely than I originally planned. Things happen like that all the time when I’m writing, and you just have to see where it leads you.

TRC:  The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Beth:  I believe they truly have to understand not only their characters, but have a good understanding of dynamics and the ebb and flow of emotional interactions. I was talking with another writer recently and she was trying to write a psychologically complex scene. I said, do you understand what this woman is experiencing right now? Can you feel a measure of it? A good author must be truly compassionate, in my opinion. That doesn’t mean they have to enter in to the complete angst of having cancer, or experience the wild euphoria firsthand of an impulsive romantic tryst, or endure repeated losses of loved ones. But they do have to be willing to enter partly in to that experience. They have to feel along with their character, or they really won’t understand how their character is going to respond. I think the best scenes come when the writer is truly is inside their character’s head, and the dynamics of the scene naturally unfold.

TRC:  What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Beth:  I kind of have a closet fascination with psychic phenomenon, like ESP, psychokinesis, clairvoyance. I’m not interested in it from a scary perspective, but a scientific one. I realized not many people know this about me because recently, one of my sisters, whom I’m close to, by the way, expressed surprise that I believed that a poltergeist phenomenon could occur. I’d love to write a book that involved some psi element . . . along with a romance, of course.

TRC:On what are you currently working?
Only for YouBeth:  I’m writing on the second book in the two-book arc I referred to above. It’s called GLOW. GLIMMER and GLOW are both contemporary, sexy romances, but they have more of a new adult feel with elements of suspense. At times, it even feels like bit of a ghost story. ☺ GLIMMER was a ton of fun to write, and I’m very excited about how everything is going to develop and deepen in GLOW. Also, the next novel in the One Night of Passion series, ONLY FOR YOU, is debuting on December 2, so I’ve been working to spread the word about that. ONLY FOR YOU is Seth’s story. Seth is a Hollywood special effects makeup artist at the top of his game, and he’s devoutly avowed to avoid actresses in the romance and sex department. Of course, fate just has to send his soul mate in the form of Hollywood’s sweetheart, celebrity Gia Harris. What’s life without a challenge? These are two smart, independent people who have to work to find their way to each other. I think readers will really enjoy taking that journey with them.

TRC:  Thank you Beth for taking the time to answer our questions. Congratulations on all of your success. We wish you all the best.

Beth:  Thank you so much for having me at The Reading Café. It’s been fun.

Interview beige

TRC: Hi JL and welcome back to The Reading Café.

JLBarnett-1JL: Hello Sandy, and TRC fans. Thank you so much for having me back.

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself since last we spoke?

JL: Well, 2 years have passed since our initial interview. Besides writing, I have also had to focus on my other profession, Photography. Just after the first interview and release of Storm’s Wake, the publishing firm I was with went out of business 3 months later. Sadly, it happens. So, I spent 6 months pursuing other venues and decided after many rejected queries to postpone the release of my work until I was closer to having the series complete.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

JL: I would say the catalyst that started me writing this series was a combination of events. I began writing after lose my mother in 2008. I was in a really dark place in my life. I opened word, typed what I was feeling and a co-worker was walking by my desk and glanced over my shoulder at what I was writing. She said it sounded like a great opening to a book, had I ever considered writing. So, over the next few days, I started creating a story from the dark feelings I had. From there, I read my work to my family and they eagerly wanted to know what was happening next. So, I’d say my mother’s death was the start and my family’s interest became the influence that kept me going.

TRC: When not writing, what do you do to relax? For fun?

JL: I enjoy watching some of my favorite tv shows with my family. Also, I have a hobby/business in photography that I work at. I know, you asked about relaxing and fun. I love editing and graphic design. I don’t see post editing as a chore. For me, it’s like working in a Zen Garden. Making minor changes here and there, it’s peaceful for me. I also love riding my motorcycle. This is very relaxing.

Storm's Wake coverTRC: STORM’S WAKE is the first installment (released in January 2012) in your Chronicles of Jake series. For anyone who has not read the storyline, would you please tell us something about the premise of the series?

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/

JL: Storm’s Wake, was initially released in 2012 and has been re-released this year back to Amazon. As for the premise of the series. While I don’t have one, dedicated premise or theme technically, I’d have to say that following what you believe, having faith in yourself and perseverance can and will lead to success, even if you fail along the way.

TRC: STORM’S RAGE, book two in The Chronicles of Jake Trilogy is about to be released. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Storm's RageJL: This is a continuation of the first book. The decisions and realizations become harder, testing his belief as more of who he is becomes evident.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story and series?

JL: My biggest challenge is my ADD. I have a struggle focusing my attention while I’m writing. Yes, while on a creative role, especially the first book, just seemed to happen. Book 2 has been more of a struggle as I’ve had to learn and adhere to writer concepts while attempting to perfect my craft. For this series, I have always seen it like a movie in my mind. I want my reader to actively imagine the book, challenging their minds to open to what I see.

TRC: From where did your ideas originate?

JL: I initially created this book from my emotional state. My friends and family have always said I have a vivid imagination. For me, inspiration for books can come from anything.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading characters in this storyline, which models or actors best represents your ideal image?

JL: This has been a question I’ve asked myself before. If I had the chance to cast for the characters, who would I pick? For Jake – Ian Somerhalder.. For Tessa – Scarlett Johansson or Jessica Alba

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

JL: As being my first works, while creating the story/plot, it evolves and becomes its own entity (somewhat). I do add real locations and events to keep things grounded.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

JL: I’d say there is a mix of both at times. While this is written from Jake’s view, there is a realization that time and the world exist in parallel.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

JL: I believe each writer has their own style and voice. For myself, sharing my thoughts and words with my family allows me to see how they respond. I also have a select circle of friends who have different likes and follow different genres of work. Hearing their input allows me to see how my work will impact a reader, in a general sense. Sort of like a comedian testing his material on a small select audience. I believe some writer’s fail in this because they take their reader’s aspect out of the equation. If you’re not writing to entertain your audience, why are you writing?

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

JL: A famous writer once said, to be successful at writing you have to write every day. I too have suffered with writer’s block and it is difficult to overcome sometimes. For me, going on a ride, taking a break and looking at something else, reviewing whatever muse inspired your work, helps me get back on track.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

JL: This might sound a little cliché but I’d like to be a best seller. I hope to one day be invited to writer’s conventions, scifi con’s, etc. Last, I’d like to see my work in the movies.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

JL: Book 3 is in the works. I also have a few new book ideas waiting for me for some much needed attention.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

JL: I believe readers will enjoy where this series is going and I want to wish everyone happy reading.
