Sandy’s REVIEW: BITTERSWEET is the third instalment in Jessica Prince’s contemporary, adult REDEMPTION romance series focusing on the people who live and work in Redemption, Tennessee. This is twenty-six year old, former US soldier and security specialist Jensen Rose, and twenty-four year old, single mother Shane Hendrix’s story line. BITTERSWEET can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Shane and Jensen) using present day and memories from the past, BITTERSWEET follows the second chance romance between twenty-six year old, former US soldier and security specialist Jensen Rose, and twenty-four year old, single mother Shane Hendrix. Approximately five years earlier, high school sweethearts Jensen and Shane had their entire future implode when a then twenty-one year old Jensen Rose disappeared without a trace, leaving a pregnant Shane Hendrix to pick up the pieces of her broken heart. Fast forward to present day wherein Jensen Rose, now a security specialist with Elite Security is hoping to reconnect with the woman he loves, and the son he never knew but secrets from the past are about to be exposed, revealing the truth about what happened years before. What ensues is the rekindling romance and relationship between Jensen and Shane, and the potential fall-out as their son is about to become collateral damage I a war of the Roses.

Jensen Rose grew up in a well-to-do but abusive family, and in the ensuing years Jensen had separated himself from the family he disowned. Returning to Redemption, Tennessee gave Jensen a hope for another chance with the woman he loves until the truth is exposed pulling Jensen back into the life he was hoping to forget. Shane Hendrix and her brother Stone had been abandoned by their mother years before, and in the ensuing time Shane was raised by her Aunt Caroline and Uncle Scooter when her brother left Redemption, without looking back. Falling in love with Jensen Rose meant a future with the man that she loved but Jensen’s disappearance threatened to push Shane over the edge.

The relationship between Jensen and Shane is one of second chances; a relationship between two broken souls who found one another at a time when they needed it the most but all was not well in our hero’s life, and walking away was the hardest thing Jensen would ever have to do. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and energetic secondary and supporting characters including Farah Highland and Cannon Banks (Bad Alibi #1), Jase Hyland and Poppy Weston (Crazy Beautiful #2); Shane’s brother Gavin ‘Stone’ Hendrix, their Aunt Caroline and Uncle Scooter; Elite Security specialist Gage Langdon, and Laeth Harker; Jensen’s parents Whitman and Cordelia Rose; Shane’s former friend Rina, and school bully Ronny; and Shane and Jensen’s son Brantley.

BITTERSWEET is a story of drama and abuse; betrayal and vengeance; second chances, family and love. The premise is emotional and heart breaking; the romance is seductive and captivating; the characters are edgy, broken but healing.

Sarah’s REVIEW:  Bittersweet is the third book in the Redemption series by the fabulous Jessica Prince. This is such a long-awaited book for me, and such a good read. As a series, I do recommend reading the first two before reading Bittersweet, I feel that you get the back story a little better after reading the books in order.

That being said Shane is one of the best characters I have read before, she loves her son more than anything and does everything to make sure the little guy is happy and whole. She is a force of nature and I couldn’t wait for her to get her happy ending. Jenson on the other hand, I had mixed feelings. Yes, the man has issues, yes he has a past, but even so he left his child. That was a turn off. I really loved seeing them reconnect and work through their issues. You can tell right off how much they still love and care about one another, they just don’t know how to get past the hurt they each have.

As always Jessica Prince will draw out every emotion you think you know, then times that ten times. I cried like a baby when reading this and that in my opinion is what makes a great book, a story that brings out real emotions. Five out of Five stars, such a fantastic read!

“Sure you’ve noticed already, but it looks like big brother wants to rip your organs out through a hole he’s plannin’ to punch in your chest.”

I turned to look over my shoulder toward the section I knew Shane’s family would be sitting in, along with their other friends. They never sat anywhere else but at the pool tables whenever they came in. And sure enough, Stone Hendrix was looking at me exactly how Gage had described.

The dude had about two inches on me and a couple pounds worth of muscle. Every inch of his beefy arms was covered in colorful ink in intricate designs, only making him look even more menacing than he already did.

I’d only met the man twice back when Shane and I were together, but it had been enough for the dude to scare the absolute piss out of me. Now, not so much. I hadn’t been in a fight in years, but that didn’t mean I’d gotten rusty. If anything, with the skills I’d picked up during my time in the service, I was even better at it than I had been back then. It was just that I had my anger issues in check now.

I looked to his left and spotted Scooter sitting next to him—only slightly smaller but no less threatening—looking at me with the same scowl. Instead of turning away, I jerked my chin up, letting them know I wasn’t going to be intimidated into leaving. They knew why I was here. Hell, everyone in Redemption knew. I was here to get my family back, and I wasn’t going to let anyone get in the way of that.

Caring family and friends, tranquil streets—ex-prosecutor Willow Lamont wishes these could make her feel truly at home. She’s back to help her grandfather manage Chocolate Haven, a long held dream come true. But she’s struggling to make their unique fudge—and to cope with a secret trauma that haunts her. Yet when she finds an abandoned baby who breaks her heart wide open, she wonders how long she can hide her emotions—especially from warm, handsome, and way too nosey Deputy Sheriff Jax Gordon.

Earning Willow’s trust is the hardest thing he’s ever had to do. Yet between her honesty and courage, he’s longing to fill her life with rekindled joy—and a forever of irresistible love

Review:

Bittersweet by Shirlee McCoy is the 3rd book in her Home Sweet Home series. Willow Lamont is our heroine, having returned home temporarily to help her grandfather run Chocolate Haven.  With her two sisters (previous story heroines) busy with a marriage or babies, Willow spends her free hours making chocolate and failing on making the family secret fudge recipe.  Willow has nightmares, due to a rape when she was only 13, and has kept this a secret all these years; one reason she does not like to come home.

One evening, while working late, she hears a noise outside and calls the cops.  Jax Gordon, the deputy sheriff and our hero, arrives to find out what is wrong.  Willow describes a car stopping and then pulling away.  Together Jax and Willow will find an abandoned baby by the dumpster.  When they are at the hospital for the baby, Jax recognizes that Willow is hiding some kind of trauma, and when it comes to that, Jax is an expert.  He himself has his own nightmares of having his own family murdered years before.

What follows is a slow build sweet romance between Jax and Willow, with the mystery of finding the person to dumped the baby.  Despite their determination to not have any relationship, they both start falling for each other.  It was really nice to see the Lamont family again, as well as the backdrop of making chocolate.  Willow will foster the baby called Miracle, temporarily until she is well enough to be adopted.

Bittersweet was a very nice romance, with a couple that each had their own mentally disabling issues.  Willow will slowly learn to put the past behind her, and realize that she loves being home again.  The only problem is she needs to help Jax move on from his past, as he fears being hurt again.  Once again, Shirlee McCoy gives us another wonderful story, surrounded by a great family, in the small town of Benevolence, Washington.  If you enjoy small town romances, I suggest you read the Home Sweet Home series
