Review:
I feel like I have just gotten off the rollercoaster that is THE RUBY CIRCLE by Richelle Mead and I am still feeling exhilarated, a tad lightheaded and wondering, did I get off before it came to a complete stop? This novel is the conclusion of The Bloodline Series that brought “Sydrian” together. That is Adrian, our lighthearted Moroi vampire and Sydney, our serious Alchemist. These are two races that were never meant to be together, but there is no stopping true love!

Sometimes staying together is tougher than getting together! Sydney and Adrian find themselves living with his mother in a guest suite at the Moroi Court. It isn’t very romantic and real life is difficult, but soon the adventures begin. Sydney breaks out of Court with the help of Ms. Terwilliger, our favorite teacher slash witch! There was a clue left for Sydney that may help them find the kidnapped Jill. There is a lot of action in this novel and our couple is pulled in so many different directions. They are following the clues to Jill’s location, discovering who is behind the kidnapping and solving the mystery of what happened to Olive! This is Nina’s sister who fell in love with Neil and disappeared. We need a chart of all characters, because they all make an appearance in this novel! At times the action seemed manic, there were so many detours. All former characters, including “dead ones”, make cameo appearances and that added to the many side plots!

Adrian must come to terms with his Spirit use and how it is affecting his mental health. Nina used too much Spirit and she suffered the consequences! Sydney is surrounded by her adopted Coven and the magical aspects were a fascinating part of the storyline. I think I needed more witch time, but all of the characters were pushing for story time. During one part, a baby joins their group and the secrets about his parentage must be kept a secret from everyone! His genetics might literally be the salvation for the Moroi race.

The novel has two conclusions. The race to find our kidnapped Princess is exciting with Sydney battling a Demon! Sydney has a chance to make amends with The Alchemists through the use of blackmail, that’s the genius Sydney I know! Sydrian wants a chance to live a happy life without constantly looking over their shoulder. The epilogue is another story. I found it a tad disappointing! The story building was stellar and then, it fell flat. Loose ends were not resolved, leading me to believe that Ms. Mead wants to revisit this world with another spin off. It’s not a bad HEA, but it was too safe. That led to the feeling of, that’s it?!? I think readers will still love this novel, just hang on and enjoy the ride!

Their worst fears now a chilling reality, Sydney and Adrian face their darkest hour in this heart-pounding fifth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where all bets are off.

Review:

Very few times have I ever sat down to write a review and can’t come up with the first line. I literally have too many thoughts going through my head about this one. The story picks up shortly after The Fiery Heart ends. Those familiar with the story know that Sydney was taken against her will by the powers that be within the Alchemist organization for becoming too “chummy” with the Moroi (the vampires). If they only knew………….

Sydney was held, and basically tortured psychologically for months. Once she is released from the “cleansing” cell, she knows that she has to play along in order to make the Alchemists believe that she is on the mend and on the path to redemption. She finds herself in the ultimate game of cat and mouse and knows that if she doesn’t play her cards right, she’ll never see the light of day.

Adrian is utterly devastated that he hasn’t been able to contact Sydney in their dreams. Unfortunately, for Adrian, he falls back into his old habit of drinking to numb the pain. He begins to lose hope, and then there’s a knock at the door. I don’t know who was more shocked when he opened the door, him or me!! He is whisked back to Court and tries to enlist the help of their queen and his friend, Lissa and her guardian, Rose. But, Lissa knows that it’s a slippery slope and can’t risk her fragile reign to go up against the Alchemists when it isn’t one of her subjects in danger.

Despair descends on Adrian and he soon descends into a routine that he knows all too well: drinking and partying. Thankfully, the pity party doesn’t last long and he’s able to finally connect with Sydney and knows that she is alive! However, the one thing he needs to know is very elusive. He needs to know where she is and she has no idea. Adrian springs into action and heads back to Palm Springs and a plan is formed. He enlists the help everyone who will listen to him, and soon enough, the plan is enacted. Will they truly be able to get to Sydney in time? Will their crew be able to get in and get her out? Oh my friends, you’ll have to read to find out. Because as fans of this series know all too well, there isn’t always a happy ending…………

Richelle Mead is a phenomenal author. Her YA series, Vampire Academy (which Bloodlines spun off of), is one of my absolute favorites and I never thought that I’d like this particular series as well as that one. Well, I’m a big girl and can admit that I was wrong!! She has a different spin on vampires and the world and it more than works. It works WELL! Her supporting characters, all of which we get to see in Silver Shadows, are such an integral part of the story, but you never feel overwhelmed with the amount of information that IS this story. I wish that I could share more about some of the things that happened in this one, but don’t want to spoil it for anyone. You also don’t have the quintessential love triangle in this series as you normally get in a lot of YA series. At least, not with the main characters.

All of Mead’s books grab you on the first page, and this was no exception. This one was a bit brutal in the Alchemist’s treatment of Sydney and her fellow detainees, but was necessary to portray just how far the Alchemists will go to get what they want. If you’ve not read Mead, you are missing out on a fabulous ride. And, even though it’s YA, I can’t fathom anyone who is a fan of paranormal with a twist not liking this series. The downside? I have to wait on the next and I cannot wait. Well done Richelle Mead, very very very well done!!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 19, 2013

In The Indigo Spell, Sydney was torn between the Alchemist way of life and what her heart and gut were telling her to do. And in one breathtaking moment that Richelle Mead fans will never forget, she made a decision that shocked even her. . . .

But the struggle isn’t over for Sydney. As she navigates the aftermath of her life-changing decision, she still finds herself pulled in too many directions at once. Her sister Zoe has arrived, and while Sydney longs to grow closer to her, there’s still so much she must keep secret. Working with Marcus has changed the way she views the Alchemists, and Sydney must tread a careful path as she harnesses her profound magical ability to undermine the way of life she was raised to defend. Consumed by passion and vengeance, Sydney struggles to keep her secret life under wraps as the threat of exposure—and re-education—looms larger than ever.

••••••••••••••••••

Where do I begin?? THE FIERY HEART by Richelle Mead is an awesome addition to the Bloodlines series. This novel is packed with humor, action, suspense and most of all………LOVE!! This is one of my favorite reads of the year! Adrian, our self- described, “eye candy with great hair” and Sydney, our smart and serious Alchemist are finally a couple! If you enjoy a great love story that slowly builds and shows a couple’s vulnerabilities and hurdles that must be overcome, you will love this book! Plus, we have alternating points of view from both Adrian and Sydney. I love her, but Adrian’s chapters leave you laughing out loud. He is so funny, but vulnerable and that makes him very swoon-worthy in my opinion.

Some highlights of this book are when Sydney joins a Coven and embraces that part of her life, magic! Zoe, her little sister, has moved into the dorms. She is the thorn in Sydney’s side because she becomes suspicious of Sydney’s activities. Sydney is still trying to analyze what ingredients are in their Alchemist tattoos, so that she can create an ink that allows them to break away and not be re-educated. Adrian is using his “Spirit” gift to try to discover what can make someone immune from turning Strigoli, or the undead!

Adrian gets to use some of that self- defense that he learned in a previous book and practices “treejitsu” on some men threatening Sydney. That is swinging a tree branch to protect his ladylove! There are many humorous parts, but like I said, the budding romance is the best. They are both committed to each other, even though the odds are against them. I loved all of Adrian’s escape plans: Move to Sweden and open a pancake shop, join a nudist colony in Fuji! You get the idea, they were all funny!

Adrian quotes a Yeats poem to describe their relationship: “Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold….”, but he then tells her, “The center will hold, because we are the center.” Sydney doesn’t quite get it, but when things do start to fall apart at the shocking climatic end of the novel, she reassures him by saying in Latin, “The Center will hold”.

WOW!! I can’t wait until the next book!

Indigo Spell (Bloodlines #3) by Richelle Mead-a review

Indigo Spell (Bloodlines #3) by Richelle Mead-a review

Indigo Spell

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

THE INDIGO SPELL (Released February 2013) by Richelle Mead is the 3rd book in the Bloodlines Series. How do I start on this review? It is a very hard book to review, because it was SO GOOD!! You might think, why would that make it hard? When the whole book is written well, full of endearing scenes and the emotion is so HOT, yes it is hard!! Some series start to falter in the middle, but this series has been consistent!! Strong, swoon-worthy emotion is hard to review, it must be read firsthand to be appreciated. Believe me, this book is full of action, new characters are introduced, a bad villain is uncovered and defeated, but the MAIN reason I love this series is the evolving relationship between Adrian Ivashkov and Sydney Sage. The swoon-o-meter goes off the chart during their interactions!!!

Things are awkward between our friends in Palm Springs. After their passionate kiss, Sydney leaves Adrian. She has years of Alchemist training, which has taught her that a relationship between a Moroi (good vampire) and human is strictly off-limits. Adrian being Adrian doesn’t give up, but says to Sydney, “If I keep loving you, maybe you’ll eventually crack and love me too”.

Adrian supports Sydney through everything that she goes through in The Indigo Spell. He is fun loving, never tells her what to do, and reminds her about her strength and power. He doesn’t mind when Sydney saves him! He is comfortable with who he is!! Sydney is still practicing her magic under the guidance of Ms. Terwilliger. There is a rogue witch in the Los Angeles area that is draining young women of their power and youth. Adrian and Sydney go undercover to warn young women. While at a college campus, they are forced to hang out at a fraternity party. When asked what fraternity he belongs to, Adrian answers A Y E, Alpha Yam Ergo!! Only Adrian can make a bad situation fun!! I WANT TO JOIN!!

A big part of the action, involves finding a rogue Alchemist, by the name of Marcus Finch. He tells Sydney some of the real truths about the Alchemists and these have her questioning her beliefs. Sydney uses her magic and wits to find evidence.

There are so many great interactions between Adrian and Sydney. When the powerful witch enters Sydney’s dreams, Adrian keeps her safe by doing the same. They have some hot and endearing dream visits! Who knew playing Monopoly could be so much fun, or *swoons * tabletops! I like that Sydney does not straddle the fence in this book. Finally, she makes up her mind!! Each interaction with Adrian makes her realize what she really wants and that is HIM!!!

This was a great book leading into The Fiery Heart. You know their love will not be easy, but I think that Sydney and Adrian will be able to handle any obstacle that comes in their way!! You know that it will be a wild ride!! I bet that between her brains and his charm, they will be a great match against anything!!

Once again!! TEAM ADRIAN!!!!!!!!!!
