B. Kristin McMichael dips her foot into the genre of Young Adult PNR, with The Legend of the Blue Eyes. Our heroine, Arianna Grace, has no idea that turning 16 will change her forever: SHE is the legend come to life. In a rather rapid transformation (literally), Arianna cannot seem to catch her breath before being flung into this supernatural culture.

“You need to feed, or the pain will get worse.”

“Feed?” she asked, confused. Arianna felt a jolt of pain rip through her body and she closed her eyes. With one fluid movement, the young man pulled a knife from his pocket and cut his own wrist. “What…?” Arianna began to ask, as she opened her eyes to find his bleeding wrist near her face. Arianna felt an urge come over her. Her eyes glazed over as she stared at the blood. Without thinking, she reached for his bleeding wrist and licked the blood away. Arianna felt the pain inside her subside. The world around her dimmed, and she passed out.

Welcome…not! A mysterious person whom has been communicating via discreet notes confirms a meeting to deliver answers about her family. Arianna’s mother died after giving birth and her father died when she was four; she is being raised by her aunt and uncle. The revelation is more than Arianna could have anticipated: Great Uncle, Gabriel, one of TWO living relatives, tells her she will be meeting her mother’s father, Lord Randolph, and will now live at his estate. Arianna is the product of a paranormal Romeo and Juliet: Her mother was a purebred dearg-dul (aka vampire) and her father was a purebred Baku (“night human” aka demon). The two clans have been at war for hundreds of years (because they both feed on blood) and Arianna has reached the age where she must convert into the new species. As you can imagine: BOTH sides want her! So much for Sweet 16.

Before I get into the love story(ies), I should explain the legend itself (though I didn’t learn of it until about 57% into the book!). The legend states that for the blue-eyed one to reach full power, he or she must take five companions: each of a different race. And just like that, this is no straightforward love story. Devin is the first person attached to Arianna. He is a “day human” (nothing supe about him) and groomed by Grandfather Randolph to be Arianna’s guardian. Their attraction is almost immediate, but Devin is hot and cold with his feelings; completely frustrating/confusing Arianna. He supplies her with blood, he even kissed her, but is that because she’s an “assignment”? Does he like her or doesn’t he? This part didn’t bother me so much because I swooooon for first love (YA or otherwise!); those insecurities are universal and relatable.

What I didn’t enjoy, though I’m not the exact demographic for YA, is that by adhering to the “collection” of custodians (those who will supply Arianna with blood and become irreversibly connected to her), there is an influx of feelings from every new custodian she takes on. Forget about the YA love triangle. Enter Turner the Lycan, Andrew the Baku, and Thomas the Tengu (he flies). Even as I’m writing this, I’m wondering: Aren’t we missing the Dearg-dul? Or is Devin fulfilling that role since he supplies blood? Perhaps she doesn’t need that race, because she is already part vampire, but then again she’s also Baku and so is her custodian, Turner. Questions…lots of questions. Not to worry! Ms. McMichael is set to release the sequel, Becoming a Legend, in June. I’M FIRST IN LINE!!!! ☺

Arianna learns she has been surrounded in a supernatural environment all along (vampires, lycans and bakus, oh my!). Problem is, under Lord Randolph’s instructions (Uncle Gabriel’s pretty guilty, too), no one was allowed to advise Arianna of the monumental legend she would come to fulfill. Arianna finds herself embroiled in kidnappings, poisonings, and nefarious plotting to undermine current leadership. With little choice but to embrace this new life, Ms. McMichael keeps you interested in Arianna’s rise to glory and pursuit of adjustment and happiness. The story is far from done.

In “P.S.”-mode, while I am no fan of lycans, I did like Turner’s approach (he is the second person attached to Arianna and has a really great role in the story). Uncertain of Arianna’s feelings for Devin, Turner moves with intention and lets Arianna know he is interested. Maybe if Jacob had approached Bella li…nah, even then, Edward was clearly the better choice! 😀 I hope Ms. McMichael trusts me to continue this series…I need to reconnect with this group.

Midnight Exposure/Midnight Sacrifice by Melinda Leigh-a review

Midnight Exposure/Midnight Sacrifice by Melinda Leigh-2 part review

Mdinight ExposureMidnight Exposure (Midnight #1) by Melinda Leigh-released August 2012

Amazon.ca / Amazon.com / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository

Midnight Exposure, written by Melinda Leigh, takes us on a thrilling adventure in love and death by way of Huntsville, Maine. Jayne Sullivan is a struggling photographer from Philadelphia who has the potential to wipe her family’s debt by taking a picture for a tabloid magazine of the elusive sculptor, Reed Kimball. Their meeting sets off a series of terrifying events, of combined efforts that prove essential to their survival, and most rewardingly, of a new stage in their lives; a new life they were too afraid to consider.

A casual friend turned violent stalker is now on parole in Philadelphia (Jayne’s brother keeps her aware of his whereabouts). With so much distance behind her, you’d think Jayne would feel safe…save for that all too familiar feeling of being watched again. Just one picture. One picture of R.S. Morgan and Jayne would pay for her younger brother’s hospital bills. Unbeknownst to Jayne, she happens to be staying in a tiny town that’s currently investigating the disappearances of 2 teenage boys. Ms. Leigh leads us about town and introduces us to a supporting cast of characters whose quirks quickly put your mind to work: Who is overly friendly? Who seems shady?

Former police officer, Reed Kimball fled Atlanta 5 years ago following the mysterious death of his wife. He wasn’t found guilty, but rumors suggested foul play and the investigation went unresolved for so long, Reed moved away with his son to escape the media’s attention. This isn’t necessary to divulge in a new town, right?

People would stick together here. Natives were shy of tourists and newcomers, but once you were in, you were golden. If only Reed could be sure the town wouldn’t turn on him like the city of Atlanta. The backing of the community would help him make a stand. He shouldn’t have hidden his identity all these years. The townspeople were sure to resent being lied to.

I have to say Ms. Leigh developed the story in an order I didn’t quite love. Conventions allow for a romance to blossom before the heroine is embroiled in a major drama (Jayne is kidnapped by a deranged man obsessed with Druid celebrations where she is the featured attraction), but the trouble befalls Jayne earlier than I expected. Would Reed feel compelled to help a veritable stranger? Sure, there was a mutual attraction, but he doesn’t owe her anything; their brief interaction consisted of a coffee/hot chocolate date. But Reed’s instincts are honed and he is such a swoon-worthy hero, he’s ready to lend his strengths when action demands his involvement. [Hey, Reed, I could realllly use your assistance in Southern California!]

The love story was complicated. Having survived an attack and subsequent trial back home, Jayne doesn’t trust easily. Reed is so focused on raising his son in a healthy environment, he loses sight of the need for his own personal life. The attraction between Jayne and Reed is undeniable, but they outdo each other in a maddening dance of “arm’s length” limits (yeah, tell that to their honest inner voices – that’s where all the good stuff is heard!). Their courtship bordered on YA angst after a while. Denying a caress; refusing a simple touch — these undemanding, yet genuine signs of support had to be averted or they would send the wrong message. Ugh! But as in all worthy love stories, Happily Ever Afters are earned. We are rewarded with a healthy dose of steam, but most importantly, the dismantling of emotional walls with honest discourse. I love it when that happens!

Jayne is no wilting flower and proves herself a worthy adversary to the maniac pursuing her relentlessly (there is a second kidnap attempt on her life and even Reed has to dodge a bullet or two!). A confrontation at the end culminates the story’s excitement and uncovers a small town’s secrets, the perpetrator’s identity and an accomplice who gets away…keeping the threat to the couple’s safety and happiness in hiatus. I cannot wait to dive into the sequel, my friends! Jayne’s brothers come into town to take her home to Philadelphia, but Reed’s hold of her heart doesn’t relent so easily. We are introduced to Jayne’s youngest brother, Danny, rather late into Midnight Sacrifice (his hospital bills were the original purpose behind Jayne’s visit to Maine, remember?), but he happens upon a pivotal struggle at the book’s conclusion and ultimately sets up the sequel, Midnight Sacrifice. Not only do I want to see Reed and Jayne set down roots somewhere, but I want the culprit found! How can Jayne and Reed embrace their new life when they’re not done looking over their shoulders?

Midnight SacrificeMidnight Sacrifice (Midnight #2) by Melinda Leigh-released April 16, 2013

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository

“The state police detective could rationalize all he wanted, but Danny knew in his soul that the danger still centered in Huntsville. The quaint little town, with its postcard-perfect views, was the hub for something evil.”

In my spoil-free effort of herculean proportions, the accomplice who managed to escape from Midnight Exposure, is featured in Midnight Sacrifice; now the bigger bad. Mandy Brown was involved in a relationship with the accomplice, only she’s not offering up any details; especially not when pictures depicting violence of her beloved brother arrive at her house as a clear signal to remain quiet. Everyone thinks the accomplice is long gone or dead. Mandy feels the opposite in her gut. So does Danny Sullivan, Jayne’s youngest brother, whom stumbled upon the violent exchange between Mandy and the accomplice at the end of Midnight Exposure. Danny and Mandy resume the hunt for the accomplice when danger seeks to destroy their families.

Defiling the Celtic tradition of Beltane, the accomplice mirrors the original perpetrator from Midnight Exposure’s actions to save a loved one.
Come Beltane Eve, she was to be his May Queen, his flower bride, the pure one who signified strength, renewal, and growth. Once the Bel-fire had eradicated…disease, he would tap into nature’s energy through Mandy. [Accomplice] would die and be reborn youthful and healthy. [Accomplice] would have a brand-new life after the ceremony. He could begin again. With Mandy at his side.

Unfortunately, human sacrifice is required and those offerings weren’t going to go willingly. Snatching a father and his son from their campground, three young ladies hiking locally (both sets whom were only visiting, how horrible is that?!), a person near and dear to Mandy and an important resident of Huntsville, the innocent victims are being primed for their roles in the macabre celebration.

Having read my share of thrillers, I know that stalking is a process, it requires a methodical mind to execute nefarious plans (my creepy radar goes into overdrive), but sometimes I wished Ms. Leigh would just get to it instead of supplying excessive details. Truth is, while the mystery was gripping (I was riveted until the book’s big reveal), Ms. Leigh won me over with the swoon-worthy love story…again. Danny and Mandy pick up where Reed and Jayne left off, only the secret Mandy holds is enough (probably) to send Danny reeling from his currently “healthy” state of mind (being an Iraqi army survivor). Like I said, there was so much action to experience, so many layers to the mystery, I was cringing for the sound of impact, lol! When Danny discovers Mandy’s involvement with the accomplice, will he have developed enough genuine feelings for Mandy to overlook her less than honest approach? Are Mandy’s secrets her ultimate demise? While there were moments of insecurity similar to Reed and Jayne, Ms. Leigh caught her stride with Danny and Mandy. Gone were the overly hesitant gestures. *Applauding* There are resolutions to all plots – you will feel relieved.

When I reached The End, I sighed aloud (ok, I sobbed at the end); always a sign of a good book, right? Ms. Leigh has a great talent for chilling and thrilling us with her writing. I thought about returning to this book the second my children went to sleep and now that I’m done, I’ll miss Huntsville and its intriguing community. The characters developed while facing adversity and that’s what this reviewer needed. An older Sullivan brother, Conor, came into town to lend support to Danny. Even though his parts were minor, working alongside the local curator, Louisa, I was quickly wrapped up in their connection. To the point I’m crossing my fingers for their own book! Perhaps this glowing review could convince Ms. Leigh? I should mention I have this thing for brothers…

To Stand Beside Her by B.Kristin McMichael-a review

To Stand Beside Her

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Released January 24, 2013

To be the best courier in the world, eighteen-year-old Benét Leila follows three simple rules: always work alone, never stay in one place too long, and never fall in love. Too bad she didn’t follow her own advice.

Leila is a courier. To the people she takes from, she is seen as a common thief; to the people she helps, she is a savior.

Nalick is your typical king. He’s rich, powerful, and always assumed to be right. When Leila crosses paths with King Nalick, she finds herself trapped. In a rush to save her best friend Kay from a prison sentence for a crime Leila committed, Leila trades her hand in marriage in exchange for Kay’s freedom.

********************

The much sought-after, but elusive “Ghost Courier”, aka Leila Benet, has finally been nabbed – in custody at a king’s palace no less! An ineffectual woman might panic. Ok, Leila is more than a little frazzled; her BFF is also being detained (but she failed an assignment!). Leila thinks only to liberate her friend and sets to negotiate with King Nalick. To Stand Beside Her by B. Kristin McMichael is a lovely Young Adult novel that travels along the pitfalls of procurement adventures, both in goods and persons, and surprises us with a bittersweet twist on the ever-popular love triangle.

King Nalick seemed reasonable. Leila thought him especially so when he dispatched her to a palatial suite instead of the dungeon. King Nalick wouldn’t abuse his power…right? Right indeed, but King Nalick won me over pretty early on. Great character, Ms. McMichael! Ascending to the throne at the precocious age of 14, Nalick has remained true to himself; not allowing the power to override his good senses (so voiced by his loyal personal guard made up of his life-long friend and cousin). But truth be told, it’s time Nalick took a wife. He’s had his eyes, and heart, set on Leila…for a long time.

The initial banter between Nalick and Leila is quick and witty and loaded with retorts – critical elements to capture my interest. Leila’s only 18 with the ferocity of a true tomboy – she isn’t intimidated by Nalick’s title. As a matter of fact, she’s sizing him up, thinking she might best him in weapons and hand-to-hand combat. You can only imagine the crowd that gathers when they put their skills to the test! Slowly, but steadily (and almost without reservation), Leila recognizes worthiness in Nalick; he’s not like the other fiendish kings she’s eluded in the past.

“All I ask in return is that you marry me. If at any time I break my end of the deal, you are free to walk out of here without any explanation and disappear to where ever you go when you leave kings. I promise I will not hunt you down. Your friend has been freed and on her way home.”

What’s more shocking than that? LEILA STAYS. A level-headed young woman, Leila accepts Nalick’s proposal and embraces all the pomp and circumstance that comes with marrying royalty. Yeah right! When word travels of the pending nuptials, spurned kings launch kidnapping attempts and the couple gets even closer as they prepare to defend Leila from enemies. And like all good love stories, Leila has a past. Despite Nalick’s charms and promises to love her, Leila is reluctant. She was previously engaged, but Ms. McMichael doesn’t belabor the fact. Personally, I want the hero to make good on his declarations. Nalick…swoon-worthy!

Enter said twist. While Leila and Nalick develop their relationship (Leila is constantly assuring fellow couriers they encounter along their adventures that she is willingly marrying), a personal guard, Anatolio, is assigned to Leila, though he is to remain in the shadows. Anatolio protects her and becomes her right hand when there is trouble and/or Nalick is unavailable. It’s not obvious from the beginning that Anatolio’s fate is intertwined with Nalick and Leila’s…but it becomes more clear…and unsettling to this reader. There is a purpose behind Anatolio’s presence, but it was difficult for ME to place myself in the situation. I was really Bella in Twilight or Anastasia to Christian Grey; do you know what I mean? It was thrilling to think myself the heroine. Not so much in this case. I felt the triangle was a cross to bear; the proverbial albatross around your neck. Love is hard enough. Add a third person who will feature in your future…when you’re trying to build a here and now and forever with your husband? Confusing, I know, but also unnerving for ME.

As a lover of language arts, grammatical and spelling errors nearly ruined my concentration and general flow of the story, but the structure itself is a sound one; it has all the elements to delight and entertain you. I will no longer speculate on “the twist”; you are going to have to reconcile those feelings when you read the book. There is a thoughtfulness and beauty to the foresight. My sentiment at the end of the book could, or could not, have something to do with that.

DARK SECRETS (Arcane) by Shona Husk-a review

Dark Secrets (Arcane) by Shona Husk-a review

Dark Secrets

Amazon / Barnes and NobleiTunes

Release date: February 18, 2013

Dark Secrets by Shona Husk explores the world of Arcane magic. If you’re considered strong in your particular talent, you gain an apprenticeship and earn your membership in the guild overseen by a particular Lord of the genre. Confident that he had the potential to be something special, Haidyn Mast asked his betrothed, Anisa, to wait for him. Haidyn was refused. Ashamed of his rejection into the Union, Haidyn turned to a life of degradation, whoring, to be specific, and never returned to his love. When destiny brings Anisa to his town…will there still be a spark between them?

Did I mention Anisa thought Haidyn was dead? **Ripping off band-aid** and…that she’s new to town…because she married Haidyn’s enemy? Yiiiikes. Which issue should Haidyn tackle first? First, Haidyn will have to apologize for dropping off the face of the earth, tell her that he’s been selling “himself” to a lust house (at least he’s the owner now), and that one of his most despicable clients happens to be her husband. *Gasp!* A daunting task no matter which way he approaches.

…he has made a life as a prostitute – to all outward appearances. In truth, he sells his mind but not his body, using magic to let his clients experience their most secret fantasies while his hands stay clean.

Brixen Saw is the Lawman of the town. A once formidable man with the responsibility of upholding and dispensing the town’s justice (any way he sees fit), does his job amidst a shadow of judgment upon his character. Two previous wives died mysteriously; the town has always been suspicious of those circumstances. In spite of the muttering rumors (you’ll discover the truth), the Lawman, tasked with maintaining order and eradicating lawlessness, furtively visits Haidyn’s establishment, the Red Lust House every ten-night (hypocrite much?), but it’s to seek out Haidyn…as he prefers men to women. Yeah…I’d have given Anisa THAT knowledge first. But in rediscovering Anisa, and the love he thought had withered away with his refusal six years ago, Haidyn lays himself at Anisa’s feet and begs her forgiveness.

Skeptical to be sure, but definitely re-inspired by Haidyn’s admission of guilt and regret, the Lawman’s henchmen witness Anisa and Haidyn’s brief exchange and Anisa pays dearly for it (in spite of his marriage, the Lawman still visits Haidyn and a peek into his thoughts through his magic, sends horrific images of Anisa’s ruined back at the hands of her adoring husband). Haidyn might have failed Anisa before, but he’s smarter and stronger now; both in mind, magic and body. Now all he has to do is convince Anisa to trust him anew…and, what…run away? What to do…what to do?

I’d learned long ago that hope was worth more than gold. A man could live without gold but not hope.

Aside from the love story that is battling to survive from within and against outside sources, the subplot of the great divide between the licensed Arcane magic users and the “rogue” faction who has gone on to form its own guild, the Free Arcane Association, was just as interesting. Haidyn sympathizes with the latter (for obvious reasons), but as the owner of an establishment that sits on the fence of impropriety, coin pays for silence…on both sides. His clientele is comprised of paying, thrill-seeking patrons who check their allegiances at the door. I enjoyed the heck out of this story line as the reader decides who the bigger evil is.

Ms. Husk delivers a great story. Anisa is the jilted lover coming to terms with this new incarnation of Haidyn while discovering her husband harbors secrets and fury. Haidyn must continue his magical prowess long enough to…in order to…UGH…I CAN’T VERY WELL TELL YOU! There’s a lot to love in this short story. I will admit to getting lost a few times along the way with regard to the Arcane terminology (Kindle failed me this time; unaware of Ms. Husk’s magical world!). I was certain Dark Secrets was written as a sequel, but when I reached out to Ms. Husk (you knew I would!), she said it could be read as a stand-alone. I took great pleasure from this book, but look forward to reading Dark Vow (released in 2011) to visit the beginning. But I’m/WE’RE not done yet — Ms. Husk advised me she is working on a new book in the world of the Arcane. I’m clearly a fan…you think I can get some insight??? 😉

A Vampire’s Christmas Carol by Karen McCullough-a review

A Vampire’s Christmas Carol by Karen McCullough-a review

A Vampire’s Christmas Carol by Karen McCullough

Decatur, AL is where Carol Prescott WANTS to be on Christmas Eve; at mom and dad’s celebrating with family. Due to bad weather, forcing the freeway shut, Carol braves the unfamiliar roads and her car ends up in a ditch having slid across an ice patch. Trusting her survival skills, Carol walks toward a lighted house, a beacon to save her from freezing to death. Ironically, the home owner is a very hungry vampire. I never said she’d survive the night.

“Tomorrow I’ll die for good. At sunrise.”

“For good. You mean, like, finally? But how do you know?”

“My hundred years of grace are up tonight. If I don’t drink human blood by tomorrow morning, I’ll die at dawn. And I don’t plan on drinking any, which is why your presence is so dangerous.”

“I don’t – Oh. Temptation?”

He nodded.

A bit of self-preservation is healthy at this point. Instead, Carol abides by her inner voice and considers her odds of surviving the inclement conditions outside or remain alongside the ravenous bloodlust that Michael assures her will consume him and threaten her very life. SHE STAYS.

Michael tries, more than once, to try to get Carol to leave. He warns her of the agony he will face by denying the monster inside, but he is resigned to end his life. She can stay and watch (a little on the morbid side), but Carol reminds him of his previous life, his former love, and it brings him comfort to have her there; something he’s denied himself for too long. How very charming, if not romantic. What ensues is an all-nighter of history and camaraderie. HA – you thought I was going to say SEX, didn’t you? Not one bit, but the story wasn’t lacking in any way. Michael recruits Carol to draft his story in the hopes that it could help another vampire in the future. Am I not supposed to swoon?

To pass the time, Michael tells Carol how he became one of the “Risen”. At the age of 29, on his way to propose to his lady love on Christmas Eve, Michael was the victim of the Good Samaritan rule gone bad. After defending a woman from an attack in an alley, the assailant turned on him, perturbed by the interruption, and proceeded to drain Michael. The former lawyer, used to being inquisitive and even ambitious enough to try politics, was now in self-exile; hating the day his life was stolen.

How in the world is this remotely a Christmas story? Is December 24th its only identifier? For a few chapters, I pondered the same myself. Karen McCullough, the author, pummels Michael with exhaustive levels of pain while staving off his body’s instincts to succumb. Convulsions, prey-predator moments and sheer fear for Michael’s last minutes have Carol contemplating just staking the poor dude herself! But just as Carol closes the door behind her…leaving Michael to fry in the sun…**his choice, not hers**…Michael’s wishes for her future usurp her promise…

“I wish…You did say there might be a way—“

He shook his head. “No. Too dangerous. You’ve already risked…too much just staying here. Wouldn’t want that on my…conscience.”

“Michael, I—“”

“No. Make me happy, if you go. Have a good life. Find that hero. He’s out there somewhere for you.”

A Vampire’s Christmas was a sweet, short story full of perseverance and heart. I know I believe in Christmas miracles…will Michael?
I’d LOVE a Vampire for Christmas!
