Catching Up With Erin Knightley

Catching Up With Erin Knightley

Erin-Knightley2

The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome back Erin Knightley. Erin is here today to talk about her just released book, Flirting With Fortune, which is her 3rd book in her Sealed With a Kiss series. She will also tell us what she has in store for  2013/2014.

Let’s talk to Erin.

TRC: Hi, Erin.  Thank you for taking the time to visit us at The Reading Cafe, to discuss your new release “Flirting with Fortune”, as well as to talk about what you have planned in 2014.

Erin: Hello! Thanks so much for inviting me to join you  🙂

TRC: You have just released Flirting with Fortune, which is the 3rd book in your Sealed with a Kiss series.  For those who may not have read this series, would you please give us a brief description of the premise of the series?

Erin:  Absolutely! The Sealed with a Kiss series follows three of the Moore siblings – children of the Marquis of Granville. Each book features letters that are important to the storyline—which is where the Sealed with a Kiss title came from. Someday I hope to return to the series and give the youngest two siblings, twins Carolyn and Jocelyn, their happily ever afters, too!

FINAL Ruined by a Rake Cover CroppedTRC: Earlier this year you published a novella, Ruined by a Rake.  Can you give us a brief description of this novella?  How different was it writing a short story in comparision to your three full length books?

Erin:  The novella was created in good fun—I wanted a good old fashioned love/hate relationship. Out of that idea grew Eleanor and Nick’s story. Here’s the elevator pitch: When the only way to save the woman he loves from being forced into the wrong marriage is to ruin her, what’s a rake to do?

For the full blurb and to read an excerpt, check out myBookspage on my website 🙂

Miss Mistletoe

As for the writing, it’s both freeing and constricting to write a novella, lol. It’s nice not to agonize over a long, involved plot, but it still has to have enough going on to be interesting! This was actually my second novella (MISS MISTLETOE was my first, which was actually connected to the Sealed with a Kiss novels), so I had already learned a few lessons 😉

flirting with fortune

TRC: Will you please tell us a bit about Flirting with Fortune, which was released over a week ago?

Erin:  Oh, my, can I start with how darn sexy Colin’s half-Scottish accent is? His voice is crystal clear in my head, and I really hope I captured that for the reader! Colin is a barrister-in-training who recently inherited a title—along with an unexpected avalanche of debt. Now he’s forced to become the one thing he never imagined in order to save his family’s home and future: a fortune hunter.

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository

Beatrice is an accomplished painter, a bit of a snoop, and an heiress who has come to despise the fortune hunters who circle like vultures. She’s learned a thing or two about how to spot them in her six months since debuting, but all bets are off when she meets the son of Britain’s most famous painter.

I have had so many people ask me about Beatrice getting her own story (she was prominent in both of the first two books), that I was a nervous wreck about getting her story right! I hope I succeeded – y’all will have to let me know what you think!

TRC: What are you currently working on, and what do you have planned for 2014?

Erin: I’ve just turned in the first book in my new series titled THE BARON NEXT DOOR. The series is tentatively named Prelude to a Kiss, and it follows a trio of young female musicians who have converged on Bath for the first annual Summer Serenade in Somerset music festival. Anyone who read A Taste for Scandal will recognize my heroine, pianoforte player Charity. This book comes out in late spring 2014, and I believe the second book in the series will be out in winter 2014.

A fun little fact: of all people, Charity was actually loosely based on my brother! Like him, she is a gifted musician who hears music in her head and composes on the fly. If you want to hear a piece he conducted that I listened to while writing one of the emotional scenes in the book, check this out: Click here.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Erin: If any of your readers would like to try one of my stories, I am offering RUINED BY A RAKE free for a limited time! Available wherever e-books are sold 🙂 Also, I love chatting with readers, writers, and fans alike. I’m on Twitter, Facebook, and I even occasionally blog on my website. Lastly, to stay up-to-date on giveaways and releases, please feel free to sign up for my newsletter  🙂

TRC:  TRC members, don’t miss Erin’s limited time offer of a free copy of Ruined by a Rake.  It was a fun enjoyable read.

TRC:Thank you, Erin for giving us an update on Flirting With Fortune, as well as what we can look forward to in the future.  It was a pleasure talking with you again.  We hope to catch up again in the future.

Erin: Thanks so much for having me here!

Joan Swan – RUSH Blog Tour, Interview & Giveaway

Joan Swan – RUSH Blog Tour, Interview & Giveaway

Tour Badge-Rush by Joan Swan

Last week, Joan Swan released her 3rd book in her Phoenix Rising series, RUSH. Our review of Rush is the post below this.  We welcome Joan back to The Reading Cafe to discuss Rush, and anything else she has upcoming in 2013/2014.  Let’s Catch Up with Joan.

Interview red:black

TRC: Hi, Joan.  Thank you for taking the time to visit us at The Reading Cafe, to discuss your new release “Rush”, as well as to give us an update as to what you have upcoming in 2014.

Joan: Great to be here, ladies!

TRC: You have just released the 3rd book in your Phoenix Rising.  For those who many not have read this series, would you please give us a brief description of the premise?

Joan: Phoenix Rising is a David vs. Goliath series. It’s all about exposing dark government secrets and repairing broken lives and hearts along the way.

A mysterious explosion at a military warehouse injures a team of hazmat firefighters, killing one. The contents of the building—classified chemicals used by the Department of Defense—have inflicted the team with various paranormal abilities. Abilities the government wants to study; abilities the team wants to understand and expose.

Each book in the series focuses on different members of the team and their struggle with the aftermath of the explosion. As the group delves deeper into the incident and uncovers pieces of the puzzle, their personal issues are complicated by a powerful enemy trying to keep its secrets.

RushTRC: Rush was released last week, would you please tell us about the book?

Joan: Rush is a rollercoaster of emotion and action. The book begins by going back in time and allowing the reader to experience the actual event that started the conspiracy—the warehouse fire.

Jessica and Quaid have, undeniably, been the two members of the team damaged most by the incident and all that ensues. Quaid, Jessica’s newlywed husband, is presumably killed in the warehouse fire, an event from which Jessica never fully recovers.

When the team uncovers evidence in BLAZE that Quaid could be alive, Jessica’s life changes yet again. But she’s in for a new struggle because while Quaid still has intense feelings for Jessica, he has no memory of her or their life together.

And while Jessica and Quaid are trying to piece their relationship together, the team works to stop the man whose greed was responsible for the fire and the teams’ suffering, fighting powerful forces.

TRC:  How many books are you planning for Phoenix Rising?

Joan: Four. The original series ends with Mitch’s book, Shatter, releasing New Years Eve of this year.

I plan on picking up a thread left open in Shatter to write a spin off series, because all my incredible guys need happy endings.

TRC: Intimate Enemies was a wonderful first book, in your Covert Affairs series.  Can you give us a brief description of this series for our members?

Joan: Thank you! I love this book and this series!

The Covert Affairs series follows the brave men and women working for the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement as they fight the drug, weapon and human trafficking wars across various foreign borders.

Intimate Enemies is the first book in the series.  First Temptation, a Covert Affairs novella, is book 1.5 and recently released as part of the Wicked Firsts anthology.

TRC: When can we expect the 2nd book in this series, and how many books do you anticipate?

Joan: I’m working on book two as we speak. This is Tomas’s story, one I hint at in the beginning of Intimate Enemies. The plot is not fully developed yet, but will involve the sex tourism trade in Belize and the reunion between Tomas and his heroine…with a few surprises along the way. This book will be available early 2014.

One of the things I love about this series is that because each book has its own individual plot, the number of books in the series is unlimited. I’ll continue to add to this series as long as readers are loving them.

TRC: You write Romance Suspense/Thrillers.  Do you have any desire to write in another genre?

Joan: Yes. I’ve always been in love with small town contemporary romance, and I’d like to write that genre under my real name, Joan Swan.

I’m also currently writing a super hot line of contemporary romance under a pseudonym. The first book in this series will release this month.

I’ve chosen not to link my name with the pseudonym for both professional and personal reasons. I like my readers to know what they’re going to get when they pick up a Joan Swan book—in both voice, content and heat level. Separating my pseudonym and my real name keeps the genres independent. I’ve also decided not to link the names because since I do write under my real name, my personal life is open to more eyes. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of judgment in the world, which I don’t want to expose my family to.

TRC: Would you like to share with us what you are currently working on, and what you have in store for us in 2013/2014?

Joan: As I mentioned, Shatter will release on New Year’s Eve. I absolutely love this book! Love Mitch and his heroine. And feel very satisfied to tie up all the threads throughout the series.

Also in 2014, I plan to release at least two books from the Covert Affairs series and two books from my super hot contemporary series under my pseudonym. I’m also planning another novella or two for anthologies with The Alpha Six, the authors I’ve released First Temptation with in Wicked Firsts.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Joan: Yes! I’d like to thank my readers. Without readers there would be no reason to write. I don’t know if readers realize just how their enthusiasm fuels authors through the long, sometimes frustrating hours of getting a character’s story just right.

TRC: Thank you, Joan for giving us an update on Rush, as well as what we can look forward to in the future.  It was a pleasure talking with you again.  We wish you good luck with Rush, and hope to catch up with you again in 2014.

Joan: Thank you so much for having me!

Catching Up With Jennifer Estep-Interview and Giveaway

Catching Up With Jennifer Estep

Jennifer Estep

The Reading Cafe is thrilled to welcome back Jennifer Estep. Jennifer is here today to discuss her two new releases, Midnight Frost & Heart of Venom.  She will also tell us what she has in store for us in 2013/2014.

Let’s talk to Jennifer.

InterviewTRC: Hi, Jennifer. Thank you for taking the time to visit us again at The Reading Cafe, to discuss your two new releases, as well as give us an update as to what else you have upcoming for us in 2013.

Jennifer: Thanks for hosting me again. I really appreciate it.

Midnight Frost

TRC: Midnight Frost is the 5th book in your Mythos Academy series.  This was released in late July. Can you please give us a brief description of the book?

Jennifer:  Of course. Like the other books in the series, Midnight Frost focuses on Gwen Frost, a 17-year-old Gypsy girl who has the gift of psychometry, or the ability to know an object’s history just by touching it. After a serious freak-out with her magic, Gwen is shipped off to Mythos Academy, a school for the descendants of ancient warriors like Spartans, Valkyries, Amazons, and more.

In Midnight Frost, a friend of Gwen’s is poisoned, and she’s in a race against the clock and the bad-guy Reapers to try to find a cure in time to save her friend.

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo /The Book Depository

TRC: With 5 books, and 3 novellas completed in Mythos Academy series, do you see an end to this storyline?  If so how many books are you planning?

Jennifer: As of right now, there will be six books in the series. Killer Frost is the title of the sixth book.

Heart-of-Venom Aug 2013
TRC:
Heart of Venom is the 9th book in your Elemental Assassin series. Can you give a brief description of this book?

Jennifer: Of course. Like the other books in the series, Heart of Venom focuses on Gin Blanco, an assassin codenamed the Spider who can control the elements of Ice and Stone. When she’s not busy killing people and righting wrongs, Gin runs a barbecue restaurant called the Pork Pit in the fictional Southern metropolis of Ashland. The city is also home to giants, dwarves, vampires, and elementals – Air, Fire, Ice, and Stone.

In Heart of Venom, two of Gin’s friends are attacked, and one is kidnapped, so it’s up to Gin to track down the bad guys and rescue her friend.

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository

TRC: When you started this series, did you expect it to be this successful? How many books are you planning for this series?

Jennifer: I had no idea that the series would be as successful as it has been, and it’s been so wonderful to see folks respond to Gin and the other characters. I really, really appreciate all of the nice comments that I’ve gotten about the series. It always makes my day when I get a nice e-mail from someone telling me that they are enjoying my books.

As of right now, there will be at least ten books in the series. I am hoping to write more books in the series beyond that, but we’ll see what happens.

TRC: Being so busy with two series, have you had any thoughts of doing a different series?

Jennifer: I have ideas for a couple of different series that I would like to explore. But right now, I’m pretty busy writing my Elemental Assassin and Mythos Academy series. So we’ll see what happens. But I always have more ideas than I could ever find time to write.

TRC: Can you please tell us what else you have upcoming in 2013 or early 2014?

Jennifer: Spartan Frost, a Mythos Academy e-story, was released in June, and I have Parlor Tricks, an Elemental Assassin short story in the Carniepunk urban fantasy anthology that came out in July. Parlor Tricks is also available as a free e-download. Heart of Venom will be out on Aug. 27.

As of right now, The Spider, the tenth book in the Elemental Assassin series, will be released in late December 2013. Killer Frost, the sixth Mythos Academy book, is tentatively set to be released in March 2014.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Jennifer: Thanks again for hosting me on the blog. Also, folks can check out my website at www.jenniferestep.com for excerpts, free short stories, and more information about my books.

Catching Up With Robin D. Owens

Catching Up With Robin Owens

Robin Owens
The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome back Robin D. Owens. Yesterday, Robin released Heart Fortune, her newest release in her wonderful Celta series.  Robin is  here to discuss her new release, as well as to tell us what she may have in store for  us in 2014.

Before we start our interview, let’s refresh your memory about Robin.

About the Author silver

Robin D. Owens has been writing longer than she cares to recall. Her fantasy/futuristic romances finally found a home at Berkley with the issuance of HeartMate in December 2001. My best writing moment— winning the Romance Writers of America RITA award! My worst writing moment is every time a rejection hits.

I’m a true INFJ personality type = Introverted, intuitive vs. factual, “feeling” rather than thinking, and make quick judgments. I’m a nightowl, Scorpio, love pets, and I learn best through touching (tactile). I’m usually optimistic. My other creative outlet (and major achievement) is as a member of the Lungfish Theater improv group.

I love to read and read everything, science fiction, fantasy, mystery, thrillers, romance. I firmly believe that any man who reads a well-written romance will learn what a woman wants.

Interview-Black and Deep RoseHi, Robin.  Thank you for taking the time to visit again us at The Reading Cafe, to discuss your release of Heart Fortune, as well as giving us an update as to what else you have upcoming for us in 2013.

TRC: Heart Fortune is the 11th book in your Celta series.  For those who may not have read your series, can you please briefly tell us the premise of the series?

Robin: Celta was colonized by Earth people with psi power that has now developed essentially into magic, which they call Flair.  It is a pagan-Celtic society and includes telepathic animal companions…most with attitude, which, when talking about cats, is redundant. 🙂

Heart Fortune
TRC:
With Heart Fortune having been released yesterday, can you please give us a brief description of the book?

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository

Robin: The heroine is Glyssa Licorice, a librarian, who discovers where her fated mate, her HeartMate, is when he has a life-threatening accident.  Glyssa and Jace had had a brief, hot fling, and he'd left the city, then she'd realized he was her HeartMate.  Now she's ready to travel across the continent to the  excavation site of the "lost" starship, one of three that had brought the colonists to Celta.  Love and danger ensues, along with bonding with Familiar companions, a fox kit and a hawk for Glyssa and Jace.  I use the Fams often for comic relief.

TRC:  When you started the Celta series, did you expect to still be writing this series 11th books later?  Do you have an end in sight, or do you plan to keep writing this wonderful series indefinitely ?  I hope so  🙂

Robin: Wow, of course I didn't know I'd still be doing it…and I have done other series that have let me try other things, and come back to Celta renewed.  Right now I have a 3 book contract and Heart Fortune is the first book of the three, so there will definitely be 2 more.  I have ideas for several more and no intention of ending the series anytime soon.

feral magicTRC:  You recently wrote a novella, Feral Magic.  Is this going to be a new series?  How did you come up with the idea of this book?

Robin: Long answer (as if the others haven't been).  I had the idea some years ago but didn't think a publisher would buy another shapeshifter romance, particularly when the hero was from another world who landed in Denver, Colorado, searching for his lost infant nephew.  When epublishing burgeoned, I thought this would be a good thing to put Feral Magic out.  Again, I have several ideas and should have actually gotten more novellas out by now, but I sold ANOTHER series (Ghostlayer) and Berkley wants very short deadlines on them so my time is booked.

enchanted ever after
TRC:
You also released Enchanted Ever After (Luna series) in December.  Can you give us a brief description of this series?  Also, how many books are you planning for this series?

Robin: Ah, I loved the Mystic Circle series, again set in Denver with brownies and elves, firesprites and mer people…and Kiri, my heroine in Enchanted Ever After, is a full human who moves into the magical cul-de-sac and becomes transformed…  I had planned nine books in the series, but it didn't sell as well as Luna and I would have liked, so there will be no more unless I do them on my own, and, as I said, my time is booked, though I had the first chapters of the next one written.

TRC:
Can you please tell us what else you may have upcoming in 2013 or early 2014?

Robin: April 2014, August 2014, December 2014 should see the Ghostlayer series, currently titled, Ghost Seer, Ghost Layer, and Ghost Slayer.

Series Concept:
An edgy lawman whose leg and life have been shattered… an uptight, rational accountant who’s inherited a psychic “gift” along with a fortune…and ghosts of Old West gunmen.

Book One: Ghost Seer:
Contemporary Denver, Queen City of the Plains, modern and thriving…and haunted by restless and reckless ghosts of a dusty past that only a few can sense.

Accountant Clare Cermac doesn’t think of her gypsy ancestry very often, that is until she inherits a fortune, and the gift to see ghosts – and to help them move on to the other side.  Not just any ghosts, but those of the Old West.  Strong and determined, she struggles to save her sanity and her life.

Zach Slade (Jackson Zachary Slade) leaves southern Montana with a disability pension in his pocket and a bitterness in his heart after the recent betrayal of his fellow deputies.  He’d thought he was a member of a team, but he’d been considered an outsider.  And though he has paranormal “hunches” when he sees crows, he doesn’t believe in woo woo.  He can’t work for the public anymore, and going “private” with his investigative skills is being bought.

Two lives derailed, touched with the supernatural, collide…and the ghosts of the wild, wild West are no more reckless than two people challenging each other mentally, emotionally, physically.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Robin: I am deeply indebted to my readers for all their support.  Thank you!  And many, many thanks for giving my enovella Feral Magic, a chance at pleasing you outside Celta.

Merry meet and merry part and merry meet again.  May a little magic always grace your lives.

TRC:  Thank you, Robin for giving us an update on Heart Fortune. We wish you the best of luck and look forward to you visiting us again in the future.

Robin:  Thank YOU!

Catching Up with Julie Cross

Catching Up with Julie Cross

julie cross
The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome back Julie Cross.  On August 1st, Julie will be releasing a special book close to her heart in Letters to Nowhere. She is here today to discuss discuss her new release, as well as what else we may have to look forward to in 2013

Before we start the interview, let’s refresh your memory about Julie.

About the Author Black and Green

I’m the author of the YA sci-fi trilogy, the Tempest series (St. Martin’s Press). I’m also the author of the YA contemporary novel, Letters To Nowhere.

I live in central Illinois with my wonderful husband and three kids currently between the ages of 7 and 12 (the kids not the husband). My writing journey began in May, 2009 with a short story in a notebook.

Within a year, I had written seven (some good some God-awful) young adult novels. Not being a college graduate and having spent the previous fifteen years teaching gymnastics and working as a YMCA Program Director for Recreational Gymnastics, professional writing wasn’t in my plans. Not even close. But ever since the day I started that short story, I haven’t been able to stop. It was love at first sight.

After about a year of writing, I had a three book deal with St. Martin’s Press, and a film option with Summit Entertainment. Crazy, right? I know. It wasn’t until August of 2011 that I quit working full time in order to be at home with my kids more and of course, write more. My young adult time travel debut novel, Tempest, released on January 17, 2012. The rest of my personal story remains unwritten.

Now lets catch up with Julie.

Interview beige

TRC: Hi Julie. Thank you for taking the time to revisit with us at The Reading Cafe to discuss your new release “Letters to Nowhere”, and what else you may have in store for us in 2013/2014.

Julie: In addition to Letters to Nowhere, I’m also the author of the YA sci-fi/time travel trilogy, the Tempest series. Right now, the first two books in the series (TEMPEST & VORTEX) are currently available wherever books are sold. The third and final book, TIMESTORM, will release in the US on January 28, 2014.

I also have a co-authored New Adult contemporary series that just recently sold. It’s not announced yet so I can’t give too many details, but it’s called HALFWAY PERFECT and my co-author is Mark Perini, who happens to portray, Jackson, my main character in the Tempest series, on the book covers. You can get more info about that on our joint blog  http://markandjuliegchat.blogspot.com/
Letters to Nowhere
TRC:
Letters to Nowhere is scheduled to be released next week. Can you please tell us the premise of Letters to Nowhere?

Julie:  Letters to Nowhere is about a 17 year old elite level gymnast who’s just lost both her parents in a tragic car accident. Karen moves in with her coach and his teenage son so that she can continue training. And of course you can imagine that the “teenage son” becomes a major part of this story.

TRC:  Is this a standalone novel, or will this be part of a series?

Julie: Originally, I wrote it as a standalone but after much persistence from early readers and my own desire to keep writing characters in this world, I’m planning two more books now, RETURN TO SENDER and LETTERS TO YOU. Hopefully I’ll be able to release both of these this fall/winter.

TRC:  Can you please tell us how you came up with the idea of Letters to Nowhere, since this was totally different then your Tempest series?

Julie: The idea of writing a YA/NA novel set in the world of gymnastics is something I’ve wanted to do since I first began writing. But the actual premise for Letters to Nowhere came to me on a flight home from NYC right after my first novel, Tempest released. I kept thinking about a potential female gymnast main character and developing her. But I knew I needed something bigger for her to battle. An obstacle that would nearly make it impossible for her to reach her dream. Then I thought about how big a role parents of elite gymnasts play in their child’s life. And what would happen if I took away that support system? Is her dream really her own or a reflection of her parents? Even if it is her own can she find the strength and the drive to continue on her own?

TRC:  Why did you decide to self publish Letters to Nowhere?

Julie: My husband is actually the one who really encouraged me to dip my toes into the self publishing world. I had been on submission and recently sold three new projects, and none of them fit the Letters to Nowhere mold exactly. And LtN obviously didn’t fit in with time traveling YA associated with the Tempest series. Then all the beta readers that had so kindly read draft one of Letters to Nowhere had been emailing to ask when it would be published. I never went on submission with traditional publishing houses for this book or anything. The timing was never exactly right or I was waiting to hear back on another project. And I finally decided that I just needed to get it out there. It’s the book of my heart and I wanted people to read it. Self publishing is hard work and it would have been impossible without the help of my husband doing all the technical and business type tasks.

TRC:  Was it difficult to switch between different genres like Letters to Nowhere, as opposed to your Tempest series?

Julie:  Letters to Nowhere was much easier to write than any Tempest series books. Contemporary or realistic fiction is always going to be easier for me to write. The challenges with genre switching for me only come with marketing myself as an author. Sometimes it’s hard to sell a book that’s so different than your debut novels.

TRC:  With two books already released on your Tempest series (Tempest & Vortex), can you please tell us when we can expect the third book of this trilogy?

Julie: I’m actually quite proud of Timestorm (Tempest #3) and I hope readers feel a sense of satisfaction when reaching the end of the trilogy. Basically, I was able to answer almost all the remaining questions that had been hanging in the air over the course of two books and I was able to do so in the first 30-50% of the book. And then it’s new challenges and new battles to be won for the rest of the novel. It was exhilarating to finally write the pages for this huge plot that I’d planned almost three years ago.

TRC:  Can you please tell us what you are currently working on, and what are your plans for 2013 or 2014?

Julie: I’m currently working on a few projects that I’m feeling out. One is a New Adult called Third Degree and it’s about former child genius who, after being rejected for medical residency programs, decides to pursue a third college degree by enrolling again as a freshman, but this time she’s majoring in being 18.

I’m working on the sequel to Letters to Nowhere as well as the co-authored project with Mark Perini. I also have a Mature YA/New Adult crossover set in the world of professional baseball that should release sometime this fall. In addition, I’ve created a NA anthology that I can’t spill too many details about at the moment, but it’s got an amazing premise and an even more amazing line-up of authors.

TRC:  We know you love to write Young Adult.  Have you considered writing a New Adult novel, as that is also close to YA, but for the next age level?

Julie: I love to write YA because it’s my favorite genre to read but I think it’s the fast pace of the stories and it’s all the first experiences and that coming-of-age aspect. I just love that theme. I do have some New Adult titles coming up on my schedule soon, but I also consider the Tempest series to be New Adult because my main character Jackson is 19 and in college when the first book opens. All the characters I write fall between 17 and 19 years old so I’m almost always straddling that line between the two genres.

TRC:  Thank you, Julie for answering our questions. We wish you good luck with Letters to Nowhere.  We also look forward to working with you again in the future.

Julie: Thank you so much for allowing me to participate in this interview!

Catching Up With Dianna Love-Interview and Giveaway

Dianna LoveThe Reading Cafe is thrilled to welcome back Dianna Love. Last week, Dianna released her 3rd book in her Slye Temp series, Honeymoon to Die For. On July 30th, Dianna and Sherrilyn Kenyon will release the 4th book in their Belador series, Rise of the Gryphon. She is here to discuss both books, as well as what else we may have to look forward to in 2013/2014

Before we start the interview, let’s refresh your memory about Dianna.

About The Author

Dianna Love was born in Sarasota, Florida and grew up in the Tampa Bay area. She fell out of the womb a portrait artist and soon realized she was right brain/left brain, because she loved mathematics and business as much as creating art. Leaning on her artistic background, she started hand painting signs and then moved on to scaling billboards, where she was the rare female artist who would go a hundred feet in the air to paint someone’s portrait 20’ tall. While going from that to building Olympic projects for companies like Coca-Cola, she was a voracious reader of everything from thrillers, romance, sci-fi and fantasy to memoirs and biographies. But fiction was always her first love in reading. She started entertaining herself during fifteen-hour days by making up storiesAfter spending many years traveling across country to create unusual marketing projects for Fortune 500 company, she’s now released her energetic muse on creating high-octane romantic thriller stories and urban fantasy.

Her first book won the prestigious RITA® Award (as Dianna Love Snell) and she now has a new Slye Temp romantic thriller series in 2013 – LAST CHANCE TO RUN (available), NOWHERE SAFE(available), HONEYMOON TO DIE FOR (June/2013) and KISS THE ENEMY (fall). Dianna also co-writes the Belador urban fantasy series with #1 NYT best seller Sherrilyn Kenyon. RISE OF THE GRYPHON is the next Belador release (July/2013).

When not speaking at national and international events throughout the year, Dianna lives in the metro Atlanta area with her motorcycle-instructor husband and a tank full of unruly saltwater fish named after celebrities.

Now let’s talk to Dianna.

InterviewTRC: Hi Dianna.  Thank you for taking the time to visit us again at The Reading Cafe, and to give us an update on your two new releases, as well as what else you may have upcoming in 2013 or early 2014.

Dianna: Thank you for having me again. I love to visit The Reading Café (I always think what a great blog name that is).

TRC: This month, you have just released your third book in your Romance suspense series, Slye Temp.  Can you please tell us the premise of this series, for those who may not have read it?

Dianna: The idea for this series came to me when I was first writing Last Chance To Run (LCTR), which is why LCTR is the prequel novel. The Slye Temp series  is about an independent black ops team led by Sabrina Slye, one very deadly woman you wouldn’t want to cross. After a mission in the UK went bad two years back, she and her team dropped out of sight to heal their wounds.  When they resurfaced, Sabrina opened Slye Temp, an elite corporate security agency. At least, that’s what the public sees at street level. Below ground is where covert missions to protect national security are planned in the war room.  Every story is a stand-alone romantic thriller about one of the agents finding love in the most unexpected—and inconvenient--place, but there is also an over-arcing plot going on in the background that progresses with each book.  These are high-action stories with powerful romance at the center of each one.

Love-HoneymoontodieforTRC: Can you give a brief description of your new novel in the Slye Temp series, Honeymoon to Die For?

NOTE: If you haven’t read Nowhere Safe – skip this because it’s going to give away a spoiler.

Dianna: Ryder Van Dyke was introduced as a new Slye Temp agent in Nowhere Safe.  During that story, he did a favor for someone in his family, which ended with him being arrested for murder. At the opening of Honeymoon To Die For, he’s being held for trial, but he’s being held in a prison due to the nature of the charge and his Special Forces skills.

When something unexpected happens in the prison yard, the FBI sees the chance to coerce Ryder into gaining evidence they need to go after a man they believe is a traitor – Ryder’s father.  The deal requires Ryder and Special Agent Bianca Brady to team up, and it turns out nothing like either one expects.

Rise of the Gryphon
TRC:
Rise of the Gryphon
is your next book in the Belador series, which is expected to be released on July 30th.  Can you give us a brief description of this book?

Dianna:  Rise of the Gryphon is a major turning point in the arc of the Belador series.  Evalle Kincaid meets her greatest challenge personally and on the battlefield. In this book, Evalle decides she’s ready to take her relationship with Storm to the next step, but things are never easy for her and this is no different.

At the same time, she has to turn her back on her beloved Beladors to save them.

Justifiable
TRC:
Justifiable is the first book in your Riley Walker series.  Would you please give us a brief description of this series? Are you and Wes Sarginson planning on a new book soon?

Dianna: This series started as an idea that Wes had back when we first met. He’d filmed a special on me for television, and we hit it off. He kept calling to discuss this book idea and I would always explain how to develop the characters and plot, but he wanted me to co-write it with him.  I was hesitant only because I had so much on my plate at the time, but I finally gave in (Wes is very persuasive!).

This series is about a television news anchor who was at the top of his game (like Wes) when something very bad happened to destroy his reputation (not like Wes).  Riley moves to Philadelphia and takes a job with the lowest-ranked station in the city.  He gets a chance at a big story there, but it turns into his worst nightmare when he realizes there are parallels to the incident that cost him everything. But he can’t turn his back on the story because a child is in jeopardy and a killer is targeting innocent adults.  Book two is in the plotting stage and we hope to have it out next year.
Link to our Justifiable review:

TRC: You also write a new series, The Red Moon series, as Micah Caida. What can you tell us about this series, and why you decided to use a pen name?

Dianna: Mary Buckham and I are collaborating on this series. We debated about using our names since we’ve been published for a while, but decided we wanted to keep the young adult series separate from our adult books.

Caida-Time Trap
Time Trap
is book one of the four-book Red Moon series, all of which will be out by the end of 2014. This series is like nothing else out there, but the books target fans of The Hunger Games and Harry Potter. It’s a sci-fi/fantasy about Rayen, a seventeen-year-old girl who wakes up in a strange land (on Earth) and is being chased by a sentient beast.  She has no idea who she is or why everything seems unfamiliar, at first. She forms an unlikely alliance with a computer-savvy street punk and a gifted, oddball girl to save their world – and the future – which is how Rayen meets an unusual seventeen-year-old boy who is as deadly as he is attractive.

TRC: What are you currently working on now? Also, would you like to share with us what you may have upcoming in 2013 or early 2014.

Dianna: Right now, I’m working on the next Slye Temp novel – Kiss The Enemy– that will be out this fall (2013). The next YA book will be Time Return (Book two in the Micah Caida Red Moon series) that Mary and I plan to have out this winter.  In 2014, I’ll release two more Slye Temp books and the last two in the Red Moon Series, plus (we hope) the next Riley Walker and possibly a New Adult novel I have in mind.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Dianna: I would love to remind readers that they can get free, signed cover cards in the www.KeeperKase.com program. The glossy cards are 4 x 6, and will fit in any photo album or brag book.  I’m giving away the Keeper Cards, and the list of other authors offering cards is constantly growing. This is a program I created just for readers and am thrilled to see the response. If they read e-books, now they can collect the autographed cards to put on their Keeper Shelves the way we all used to keep autographed books, but all readers are welcome to get the cards, whether they read e-books or print books.

TRC: Thank you, Dianna for giving us an update on what we can look forward to in 2013/2014, and we wish you the best with both new releases.

Dianna: Thanks so much Barb.  It’s always a pleasure to visit with you here and catch up with what’s been happening.  I’ll be around to chat today if anyone has questions or comments.

Catching Up With Jesse Hayworth

Catching Up With Jesse Hayworth

Jesse HayworthThe Reading Cafe is happy to welcome back the wonderful Jesse Hayworth.

Jesse is here to catch us up on her new release, Summer at Mustang Ridge, which was just released. This is her first book in her new series, Mustang Ridge.

Let’s talk to Jesse.

Hi Jesse. Thank you for taking the time to revisit us at The Reading Cafe, to discuss your new release “Summer at Mustang Ridge”, as well as to give us an update as to what you have in store for us in 2013.

TRC: When you were last here, as Jessica Andersen, we discussed mostly the final countdown to your fabulous The Nightkeepers series.  Now, as Jesse Hayworth, you have started a new contemporary romance series, which starts off with the release of your first book, Summer at Mustang Ridge.  Can you please tell us what made you decide to use a new pen name, Jesse Hayworth, and how you came up with the idea of the Mustang Ridge series?

Jesse: Hi, and I’m so pleased to be back at the Café! Thanks for having me. I’ve got my hot chocolate (just a dab of whipped cream, thanks), and can’t wait to kick back and dish about romance 🙂

Why take a new name and write contemporary romances? Two words: true love. (Or, if we’re having a Princess Bride moment here, twooo wuv.) When I met my one-and-only, Arizona (thank you, Match.com), I lost my need to blow stuff up and started wanting to write happier, funnier romances. At least for the time being.

As for the pseudonym, these stories are so different from the Nightkeeper books that I wanted to use a different name so there wouldn’t be any confusion (for me or the readers!). I went with “Jesse” because I didn’t trust my own ability to remember a new name, and “Hayworth” because it combines my new married (and admittedly unpronounceable) name with that of my extremely cool grandfather.

TRC: Being a new series, can you tell us the premise of the Mustang Ridge series?

Jesse: The stories center on a ten-generation Wyoming cattle ranch that twins Krista and Jenny Skye have turned into a dude ranch, much to their grandfather’s annoyance. But with their grandmother ruling the kitchen, the barn full of horses, and the cabins booked to capacity, there’s no question that Mustang Ridge is a success. Too bad they can’t say the same for their love lives …

summer at mustang ridgeTRC: Would you please give us a brief description of Summer at Mustang Ridge?

Jesse: Absolutely! It’s the story of, eight-year-old Lizzie, who hasn’t spoken in nearly two years—not to her teachers, not to her friends … not even to her mom, Shelby. Which is why Shelby takes a sabbatical from her real life in advertising, and heads west to a family-run Wyoming dude ranch. There, she’ll be the assistant cook and Lizzie will get some hands-on time with the horses. The traditional treatments haven’t worked … maybe this will?

Shelby soon butts heads with the trail boss, Foster, but Lizzie takes an instant liking to the cowboy and his horses. Sparks fly and the city lady as the cowboy discover some common ground, but junk food and b-grade science fiction aren’t enough when they come from two different worlds. As the summer comes to a close and Lizzie’s condition deteriorates, Shelby knows they have to return to the real world … even if it means leaving Mustang Ridge—and Foster—behind.

TRC: You released a novella last month, Sunset at Keyhole Canyon, to start this series.  How many books do you plan for this series?

Jesse: There are two more books in the works, but I’m keeping the series open-ended after that. I’m having way too much fun with the Skye family and their guests, who come to whoop it up at Mustang Ridge Dude Ranch for everything from Singles Week to Round-up Week. There’s never a dull moment!

TRC: Now that The Nightkeepers series has ended, do you have any plans to return to writing a similar type of the more darker paranormal romance stories, as Jessica Andersen?

Jesse:  I definitely plan on writing more Jessica Andersen books, though I couldn’t tell you what they’ll be yet, or when. I recently started watching Criminal Minds again, which suggests that as Arizona and I approach our second wedding anniversary, I’m emerging a little from my puppies-and-kittens fog and potentially regaining the urge to write about demons and mayhem, at least part-time.

TRC: Was it hard to switch from writing about warriors, mages, demons, and then switching to contemporary romance with cowboys as our heroes?

Jesse: Actually, I’m going back to my roots here, as my first few under-the-bed manuscripts were contemporary romances with horses in them. Back when I first started writing, “Western” was a swear word in publishing, but these days, hunky cowboys are in! I’ve ridden professionally and had a farm for many years, and these stories just flowed out of me. They’re tender, romantic, funny, and about people and animals I truly love.

TRC: Would you like to share with us what you are currently working on, and what you have in store for us in 2013?

Jesse: I’m finishing up a draft of the third Mustang Ridge book as we speak. The novella and Summer at Mustang Ridge are my only releases in 2013, with the following books due out in Feb and July of next year.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Jesse: I had hoped to be able to direct you guys to an awesome video trailer for the new books, but that backfired so thoroughly that it was laughable. In fact, you’re invited to laugh at me, if you want to check out The Video Trailer That Wasn’t. (http://jessehayworthbooks.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-video-trailer-that-wasnt.html)

TRC: Thank you, Jesse for visiting us to tell us about your new Mustang Ridge series, as well as what we can look forward to in the 2013. It was a pleasure talking with you again, and we wish you good luck with Summer at Mustang Ridge.

Jesse: Thanks so much for having me here! To celebrate, I’m giving away a Mustang Ridge prize pack that includes made-in-Wyoming Cowboy Chocolates, Buffalo Smooch lip balm, and a signed copy of Summer at Mustang Ridge. To enter, tell me about your favorite (or least favorite!) piece of Western wear. Me? I’ve got a concho belt that I’ve been wearing since the late 90s, and I’m a sucker for a pair of Justin boots.

Catching Up With Nalini Singh

Nalini Singh color c Deborah Hillman

The Reading Cafe is thrilled to welcome back Nalini Singh. Next week (June 4th), Nalini will be releasing the 12th book in her wonderful Psy/Changeling series. She is here today to discuss Heart of Obsidian, as well as what else we may have to look forward to in 2013

Before we start the interview, let’s refresh your memory about Nalini.

About The Author Gold and Purple

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh is passionate about writing.  Though she’s traveled as far afield as the deserts of China, the Highlands of Scotland and the temples of Japan, it is the journey of the imagination that fascinates her most.  She’s beyond delighted to be able to follow her dream as writer.  Nalini lives and works in beautiful New Zealand.  Visit the author online at www.nalinisingh.com, www.facebook.com/AuthorNaliniSingh, and www.twitter.com/nalinisingh.

Let’s now talk to Nalini.

Interview blue:black

TRC:   Hi Nalini. Thank you for taking the time to revisit us at The Reading Cafe, to discuss your new release Heart of Obsidian, as well as to give us an update as to what you have in store for us in 2013.

Nalini: Thanks for having me!

TRC:  You have just released the 12th book in your Psy/Changeling series.  For those who may not have read this series, would you please give us a brief description of the premise of the series?

Nalini: The Psy-Changeling series is set in a world with three races:

The Psy, who have phenomenal powers of the mind, such as telekinesis and telepathy, but who have conditioned emotions out of themselves in an effort to fight the murderous insanity that stalks them.

The changelings, who are true shapeshifters, as at home in their animal forms as they are in their human form. The two main packs in the series are the DarkRiver Leopards and the SnowDancer Wolves. In contrast to the Psy, the changelings are very tactile and emotional, and blood loyal to their families, lovers, and packs.

Caught between the Psy and the changelings, humans are the weakest of the three races on the surface, but they have an important role to play as the series continues.

Heart of ObsidianTRC: Heart of Obsidian will be released next week, June 4th.  Without revealing all the secrets that have been kept under wrap, while we have been impatiently waiting, can you give us a brief description of this book?  🙂

Nalini: By the time this interview goes live, a two chapter preview of the book will have been posted, so your readers can go straight there to have a read! (http://www.nalinisingh.com/obsidian.php)

The events of this book will slam through the Psy-Changeling world for some time to come. It is a critical episode in the series.

Links to pre-order Heart of Obsidian:
Amazon / Barnes & Noble / The Book Depository

TRC: Ok, I’m going to try.  Will Heart of Obsidian reveal who is Ghost?  You do not have to tell us who it is, just a little crumb if we will finally find out who he is?  🙂

Nalini: Yes, you will – in an unexpected way in my opinion. 🙂

TRC:  YES🙂

TRC: The last time you were here, you said there was an end to this series arc.  Can you give us an update on this, since this is the 12th book; how many more do we have to look forward to?

Nalini: In my head, I foresee 2-3 more books to end this arc (I’m not sure if 2 books will be enough to tie up all the threads, which is why it might be 3. I won’t know until I sit down to write the books).

However, after that, there will still be plenty to explore in this world and I hope readers will be as interested in doing that as I am.

TRC: We always want to stay in your world.  🙂

TRC: What are your thoughts in regards to continuing the premise of Psy/Changeling with your new arc, and will we still get to see those wonderful characters that we have come to love?

Nalini: Yes, absolutely. I love the sense of family in the series, and I couldn’t totally walk away from all my beloved characters – though you will also be spending time in new places, and meeting new people.

Link to Nalini's Full Booklisting in reading order

TRC: Upcoming in October, 2013, you will release your 6th Guild Hunter book, would you please tell us the premise of Archangel’s Legion?

Archangels LegionNalini: The blurb of Archangel’s Legion is now out! (www.nalinisingh.com/legion.php)

It begins with angels falling from the sky in New York and continues with rivers of blood – Elena and Raphael have a hard, brutal fight on their hands to save their city, but through it all, they work together as a single beating unit.

You’ll also get to see a lot more of Illium, Aodhan, and Naasir in particular.

TRC: What are you currently working on?

Nalini: I’m preparing for my USA/London book tour in June, so I’m working on a few smaller pieces, and making notes for my next Psy-Changeling book, which I’ll begin to write after the tour.

TRC: Thank you, Nalini for answering our questions. We look forward to continuing to read your books, and to work with you in the future.

Nalini: Thanks for the wonderful interview!
