Dangerous Tides

DANGEROUS TIDES by Christine Feehan – Reviewed by Xtina R.

Dangerous Tides by Christine Feehan is a satisfying read and one I would recommend others to read. This book is about Libby Drake, the fourth born/middle child of the seven Drake Sisters, gifted with the ability to heal and the renowned biochemist/adrenaline junkie Tyson Derrick.
The story begins with Drew Madison, who is a terminally ill leukemia patient who attempts suicide by jumping off the cliff. He does not die but is gravely injured and needs to be rescued. Tyson and the team of firefighters have to rescue Drew Madison with the helicopter and Tyson is the one who has to go down the rope to rescue him. Something goes wrong in the middle of the rescue and the rope breaks leaving Tyson to fall and in critical and near death condition. Libby finished up a shift in the hospital and is on her way, leaving for the day. While she hears of Drew Madison, she also hears about Tyson’s fall. Libby feels extremely compelled to heal Tyson at the cost to herself and her sisters.
From here the story goes into full swing. Libby is sick and disoriented from healing Tyson while her sisters try to help her find her way out of the hospital. Irene, Drew’s mother, assaults Libby with her purse because she is blaming Libby and her sisters for what happened to Drew while Elle rushes in, and wreaks havoc on Irene for assaulting Libby.
I thought this scene was super cool because it give you a glimpse of how powerful and frightening are Elle’s powers , as the seventh daughter who carries the legacy to bring in the next generation. This scene was also special to me because it shows me how much the Drake sisters really have each other’s back; that they were trying to help Libby; along with Elle standing up for Libby when Libby wasn’t in the position to do so. As much as all of the sisters are close and love each other, it is easy to see that Libby and Elle are quite close. You also catch a glimpse at how close they are in Oceans of Fire, when Libby tries to heal both Abby and Aleksandr. I like Libby and Elle’s relationship because quite frankly, it resembles, me and my sister’s relationship back in the day.
In the first 3 books, the men are not psychically gifted, but are quick to believe the magi the Drake sisters can wield. Tyson is another story, where he actually thinks the Drake sisters are con artists. One of my favorite scenes occurs when Libby and her sisters are using their magic in front of him in their house. Af first, Tyson tries to find out how some of the things are done, but then LIbby gets angry and tries to show Tyson that she can really heal. After a funny scuffle with Tyson and Libby, Tyson finally believes her and realizes that she was healing him as he was recovering from his injuries. Also, while Damon, Matt and Aleksandr have an easy time being accepted in the Drake family, Sarah is a little slow to warm up to Tyson.
Aside from my favorite passages of the book, there are the love scenes. I kind of felt like the love scenes were a little on the ‘soft core’ side, but I still enjoy the scenes nonetheless. The first love scene takes places in the house Tyson bought Libby which is described as gorgeous. A mansion that is all glass with a beautiful garden, I mean I can imagine the house to be breath taking. Tyson, who is socially awkward sure can have his thoughtful sides. Because Tyson is a scientist and can get caught up in his research, he has a tendency to stand Libby up. Despite Tyson’s shortcomings, he knows how to make Libby feel beautiful, sexy and cherished. Libby looks at herself like a ‘plain Jane’, next to her sisters. I have a feeling, that how Libby feels, can be related to some to be different from your group friends or to feel like a ‘plain Jane’ in a group of beautiful friends.
Tyson and Libby made such a lovely match. They both have a love for science and they just remind me of the cute, geeky couple. It is also a nice compliment that Libby is a doctor and Tyson is a biochemist for pharmaceuticals. Libby is a compassionate and selfless woman but has a shortcoming for being unable to say no, while Tyson is very intelligent and extremely loyal, but is socially awkward. Tyson is able to say no for Libby when she can’t, while Libby is compassionate and understanding of his awkward nature even when his cousin loses patience with Tyson.
This is still my undisputed favorite Drake sister book, because I see myself in Libby so much. I love that this story brings on many relatable feelings out of the readers, in the way that a ‘plain Jane’, quiet and maybe the insecure girl can find and love and feel desired. Also, that even people who feel like a misfit like Tyson can also find love and that such people can find their match. The book contained suspense that keeps the reader on their toes but cutting love scenes that take your breath away.

Dark Fire

DARK FIRE

All Carpathian males, must find their lifemates before they turn vampire or greet the dawn. Without a lifemate, the males no longer see in color, feel pain or experience emotions. A lifemate is the light to their dark. She is the keeper of his heart and the keeper of his soul.

Dark Fire is the 6th book in Christine Feehan’s Carpathian series, and without a doubt, I favor this book because of Darius “blushes”

Darius, the youngest of the Daratrazanoff brothers, has yet to find his lifemate, and is so close to the end, he continues to distance himself from his family of ‘lost children’, until the evening he returns to their campsite to find Tempest ‘Rusti’ Trine, a fiery red-haired auto mechanic and his lifemate. For close to 1000 years, Darius has been the leader and family patriarch, watching over, protecting, fighting vampires and resigning himself to a life of loneliness –one without a treasured and necessary mate to save his soul. But the life he once knew, is about to be turned upside down and sideways, and one fraught with anxiety, laughter and love. He finds love and life in another lost soul-one who will challenge his leadership, his arrogance and his patience-Tempest is the lifemate he never expected and will die for, in order to protect her.

As independent as Tempest is, her life has been difficult-raised by drug addicts, who exposed the young child to the dirty underworld of neglect and addiction, she ran away, only to find that there are those you can trust and those who will take advantage of a young woman. Not without her own talent to ‘read’ and ‘speak’ with the animals, Tempest is not surprised by the world of the Carpathians. Their need to feed, go to ground to heal and sleep, as well their ability to shape shift, speak telepathically, and create the necessities to survive, from the earth around, do not push Tempest away, but the love of a man, has her running for her life and away from the only person who would destroy everything to protect her and cherish her beyond life itself.

Darius is placed in the precarious position to continuously rescue Tempest from the almost comedic and life-threatening situations she seems to find. When a reporter, Matt Brodrick threatens to expose Desari, Julian and the other members of the band as vampires, Tempest takes it upon herself to defend her new family against a campaign to rid the world of evil vampires, and finds herself injured, bleeding and once again, running from the only man, who has sworn his protection and love. When Tempest boards a bus, bound for any place but where she is, Darius is beyond exasperation, and must claim, the only woman, who can save his soul.

Following a trip into town to buy supplies, Tempest is approached by Cullen Tucker, a man once associated with the group of extremists, trying to capture and destroy the Carpathians, but who is now, risking his own life, to save Tempest and her new family. Knowing Cullen has more information that could aid Darius and the others, Tempest must bring this human, back to camp, and risk exposing everyone, to the humans they have been trying to avoid for 100’s of years.

Throughout the storyline, we see Syndil, trying desperately to friend Tempest and guide her through the ever-increasing changes, much to the chagrin of Barack. But unbeknownst to Syndil, and many of the others, Barack is her lifemate. He has never lost his emotions or colors, but has been waiting a lifetime to claim his mate. Due to a horrific assault by one of their own ‘brothers’ , who had turned vampire, Syndil is slowly recovering from the rape and near-death experience. Barack’s patience snaps, when Syndil approaches Cullen, looking for friendship and a male companion.

When Darius and Tempest are left behind by the other band members, they are attacked by vigilante terrorists, seeking to expose and destroy the family. With only a severely injured Darius to guide her, Tempest must find her way to the other family members, driving the tour bus over rough terrain and through a storm of fierce Carpathian pride. When they are finally rescued, and Darius must go to ground to heal, Tempest declares her love for Darius, and offers her life for his.

But it is not until an ill-fated kidnapping attempt of Tempest, that, once again leaves Darius injured and bleeding, do we see Tempest’s true devotion and love for this man. She willingly gives of herself and her blood, to save his life. When he awakens to the sound of his dying mate, Darius must complete the blood exchange, and claim Tempest as his lifemate for all time.

Dark Fire is one of my favorite Christine Feehan storylines. I fell madly in love with Darius from the moment he saw his lifemate, and had no idea what to do with her. He was a man lost in a world of need and longing, and a world he knew nothing about. There are many humorous passages involving Tempest and her ‘inability’ for find her way home, but overall, their story of love and passion, is what draws me to this storyline……..everytime.

Deadly Game

Christine Feehan’s Ghostwalkers are an elite group of men and women, psychically enhanced by the maleficent Dr. Whitney. 4 teams of specially trained soldiers, who are fiercely protective of those they love and the men and women who cover their backs.

Deadly Game is the 5th installment in the Ghostwalker series by Christine Feehan.

Ken Norton, a gifted sniper, with powers equaled only by his twin Jack, returns from a tortuous rescue mission in the Congo, to realize, not only his physical appearance has change. While on assignment to protect the senator who turned tail and ran in the Congo, Ken finds Mari, another enhanced soldier, who was also sent to guard the nefarious politician. Thinking Mari was a trained assassin, aiming her sights on the senator, Ken takes down Mari, in the first step on their trek of betrayal and love.

Ken soon realizes that Mari is the woman who has been paired with him through hormone recognition and attraction, but refuses to accept that there is any woman capable of loving a man, so brutally tortured and maimed. His all-consuming attraction to and need for Mari, only reinforces what Ken already believes-that he is more like his abusive and sadistic father than anyone could know. His sexual aggression towards the woman, who would be his mate, is anything but normal for a man once known to make a woman weak in the knees.

Marigold Smith is determined to return to the compound where she and several other enhanced women have been raised and trained as soldiers, but Ken will never let her go. On a rescue mission of hope, Mari is captured and returned to the isolated compound where her ‘sisters’ in life, must suffer through the indignities and abuse by the men who claim to be their protectors. But a humiliating physical exam for Mari and a fight to the death between Shaun and Brett, for the ‘rights’ to impregnate his mate, shake Ken’s resolve. He is falling in the love with the woman created especially for him.

Deadly Game is filled with passion and sorrow. The story brought me to tears, when Ken believed Mari chose the sister’s with whom she was raised over the life he was offering. But love does conquer all, when Mari returns to start a new life of love with the man who was made …especially for her.

Christine has researched the background information required to detail the military lifestyle and adventures of the men and women who battle along side those who fight for freedom. The Ghostwalker’s series is a salute to the rescue missions and lives saved from the rebels and dictators, whose only goal is domination over others. Deadly Game and its’ hero Ken Norton, is a departure from the normal HEA. The torture and abuses suffered by Ken, by both his father and an evil dictator, left me feeling anxious and mourning for a character so maimed, that I wanted to wrap myself in a blanket and cry. I was emotionally drawn into the storyline and experienced all the sorrow and anger. And to me, that is a sign of a great writer.

Dark Predator

DARK PREDATOR – A REVIEW BY MIRANDA H.

As I sat down to read “Dark Predator” by Christine Feehan, I took into consideration every insight Christine expressed to her readers on the fan forum; about Zacarias. Upon shedding all my pre-conceived notions on how I imagined the great Zacarias De La Cruz would be, it was then that I opened this long awaited book–and simply allowing these two personalities to take me on their journey, wherever it may lead, and however it may end. Upon completion I found this to be the most surprising, and emotional book to date. I tend to become long winded in my thoughts when a novel has resonated so deeply within me. So, at risk of being unable to accurately express my thoughts and feelings, I will begin my review with one sentence. After nearly ten years of reading the Dark series….finally, at long last I can say confidently that I have a favorite.

From the very beginning I was utterly moved, and enthralled by the journey playing out before my eyes. Although fully aware that Zacarias De La Cruz returned to Peru seeking the peace of an honorable death after his endless, brutal existence, I was completely unprepared for the delivery of his salvation. The book had barely begun, and tears stung my eyes with the emotion this phenomenal author dragged from me, witnessing Zacarias’s reactions to the last sight he would see before he would meet the dawn. The beauty of Marguarita’s spirit as she rode atop one of the horses she loved. I found this scene so emotionally profound….for this lone, battle weary warrior to be shown first hand, that of which he had suffered endlessly in order to protect. Although he had only ever known duty and had never truly lived, in this moment he was shown life. What was to follow this moment of poignant beauty….I found to be one of the most exciting first meetings between a Carpathian and his life mate, I have ever had the pleasure to read. Zacarias De La Cruz, ruler of all in his world, had come to die….and yet someone dared to disobey him so that he may live.

As Christine previously expressed, Zacarias is truly a terrifying predator, born within a legacy of violence and death. A natural killer, with the makeup, and instincts of one. Deeply intense, darkly brutal, and wholly merciless in what he believes in, once he has set upon a path–yet I fell hard for his character regardless. After those rare glimpses of vulnerability, hidden so far beneath the surface not even HE knew it was there….I can say that I completely, emphatically adore all that is Zacarias. Truly, he is one of those once in a life time characters, in a sea of greats, that have grabbed hold of my heart, never to let go.

There were many moments in this book of which I was staggered by emotion for this fictional character. Yet none more so then when he laughed for the first time in his existence, or after Marguarita’s presence returned to him a long suppressed memory, and he awoke from the experience choked with long forgotten grief, and blood red tears dripping from his eyes.

Without giving too much away of the happenings in this brilliant work of literature, I will say that I can now fully understand Christine’s comment of Zacarias being unlike anything she had ever encountered, even in the Carpathian world. I was equal parts fascinated, and equal parts saddened by the difference of him from other males whom have found the other half of their soul, but I am comforted by the fact that this exceptional warrior now has found someone to love. Which brings me to Marguarita.

Unlike the Ghostwalker, and Leopard novels…I very rarely connect with the females of the Dark series as much as I connect with some of the males. Many of them I love, and appreciate, but I have never before had a favorite heroine…until now. Without being the typical quote un-quote, warrior chick, or the damsel in distress…at long last I received in this book what I have wanted to see much more throughout the entirety of the series. A woman whom, in my opinion is the true equal of a Carpathian male….not in power, or strength perhaps…but a true partner of the heart and soul. A woman as fiercely loyal, as furiously protective, as maddeningly stubborn in the love of her mate, as the male is for her. Marguarita is my all time favorite heroine in the Dark series so far….because she equally gave Zacarias as good as she got. Cherishing HIM, and placing HIS needs above her own.

A bonus of all this insane emotion, and the wild journey to love between Zacarias and his lady, at long last….was the pulse pounding demise of Ruslan Malinov. I never would have thought ten years ago when I began this series, that a Carpathian could ever defeat a vampire in such a way. Outstanding. Once again, in this novel, we readers are awarded with that perfect formula of emotion, romance, mystery, and action that few authors can achieve with the same finesse, and integrity as Christine.

In closing…putting it far more simply, and shorter than all I said above…I loved every single word of Dark Predator from beginning to end. Bravo Christine Feehan for writing what I believe to be the greatest Dark book so far.

Dark Curse Review

DARK CURSE – A REVIEW BY TRICIA K

I love Christine Feehan’s writing. I’ve loved every story I’ve read. Reading her books helped me through a devastating time in my life. I had not read anything for years and decided one day while at the store to pick up a book because I thought it would be a nice distraction from the real world. Burning Wild and Shadow Game was what I purchased that day. Needless to say…..I was HOOKED!! I’ve read all of her books and look forward to each and every new release.

Dark Curse is my favorite Dark Series book, which was a surprise for me because I’m not normally an “alpha” male type of gal. But there is somethingabout Nicolas that is just too irresistible.

Lara being tortured by Razvan and Xavier was terrible. How her Aunts did everything to teach her and protect her was amazing, considering the condition they were in. They were basically starved, given just enough sustenance to keep from dying. The Aunts could have been bitter and cranky, teaching Lara how to hate and seek revenge, but instead they expressed their love, and told her stories about the Carpathians. The Aunts even helped her escape so she could try to live a normal life. They instructed her to keep her magical powers a secret to protect her from Xavier and his minions.

Fast forward and Lara is grown, returning to the ice caves, the scene ofher childhood nightmares. Then, in walks Nicholas. Mr. Man. Chest poundingTarzan. Typical knuckle dragging caveman. I love him so! Here are a fewparts of the book that I loved:

Who knew that telling your future lifemate “Let go of me, you bastard” would make him fall in love! That’s when Nicolas’ emotions hit him like a freight train…..that was very unique!

Romantic moment #2 – she knifes him in the side. Wow, that’s love. He starts claiming her after she sticks him. Maybe it was the blood that gave him the warm fuzzies???

And when he stood before her with his arms wide, telling her it was her choice, she could stab him if she wanted….or accept his claim, his life was in her hands……*sigh* She tells him “You deserve to die for being stupid. Now heal yourself!”

When he’s asking about her research and she says it’s mostly sexual research…..he says “very funny” She said “you deserved it. You had a tone.” He says “I had a tone??”

He claims her before he even knows her name! He just does it, so sure of himself and he tells her straight up! AWESOME!

I also like how the aunts had described lifemates to her as a child, how the love story had been so beautiful to her.

Tarzan, oops I mean Nicholas, meeting with Mikhail was hilarious.
Here’s a recap in my own words:
Tarzan tells his lifemate: “This is Mikhail, prince of our people.”
Mikhail: “Who is the lovely woman with you?”
Tarzan (roaring and pounding his chest): “This is…..my woman
Mikhail: “What’s her name? You don’t know her name?”
Tarzan: “Name?…….Um, um, Lifemate is all you need to know! She restored my emotions and colors, no vampire turning for me!”

Back to the review:
Lara and Nicolas had to learn to trust each other. Both had suffered far too much. Lara suffered because of Xavier, and Nicolas suffered because of his centuries of hunting vampires and losing his emotions. Reading how they learned to trust one another and to rely on each other was a great story.

Lara’s determination to save her Aunts was remarkable. Her love and devotion for them was so strong, she faced the horror of her childhood so she could rescue them.

I think one of the things that captivates me with Nicolas and all of the Carpathian men is how they enjoy their lifemate’s happiness. You have this dominant, headstrong males, who want to be the dictator and protect the little woman from harm. But then we get to see the male experience his own joy at seeing his lifemate happy. For example, when Lara is able to fly as a dragon for the first time, Nicolas was overjoyed at her happiness. He realizes how much he adores her and sees the happiness within her. I love those parts.
