Description:
Adrian Rizzo was seven when she met her father for the first time. That was the day he nearly killed her—before her mother, Lina, stepped in.

Soon after, Adrian was dropped off at her grandparents’ house in Maryland, where she spent a long summer drinking lemonade, playing with dogs, making a new best friend—and developing the stirrings of a crush on her friend’s ten-year-old brother. Lina, meanwhile, traveled the country promoting her fitness brand and turning it into a billion-dollar business. There was no point in dwelling on the past.

A decade later, Adrian has created her own line of yoga and workout videos, following in Lina’s footsteps but intent on maintaining creative control. And she’s just as cool-headed and ambitious as her mother. They aren’t close, but they’re cordial—as long as neither crosses the other.

But while Lina dismisses the death threats that Adrian starts getting as a routine part of her daughter’s growing celebrity, Adrian can’t help but find the vicious rhymes unsettling. Year after year, they keep arriving—the postmarks changing, but the menacing tone the same. They continue after she returns to Maryland and becomes reacquainted with Raylan, her childhood crush, all grown up and as gorgeously green-eyed as ever. Sometimes it even seems like the terrifying messages are indeed routine, like nothing will come of them. Until the murders start, and the escalation begins…

Review:

Legacy by Nora Roberts is another one of her fabulous stand-alone novels.  We meet Adrian Rizzo, when she is 7 years old, as she sees her father for the first time, when he is drunk and maniacal; he threatens her mother, as well as herself.  When Lina (Adrian’s mother) runs to save her daughter, she manages to push him away from harming her anymore and he falls to his death.  Adrian is sent to her grandparents’ house in Maryland, to spend the summer, and try to forget the horror of what happened, while her mother continues travelling and promoting her successful career as a famous fitness guru.

Years later, Adrian sits in the school lunch room and makes friends with three nerds that most people ignored.  She explains to them that she wants to start her own fitness business for younger generations on DVD’s, and convinces each of them to help her create them with her as the star.  Hector is the technical guru to film the spots; Teesha is the savvy business guru and Loren, is the helper.  A bond is formed and together they create a fabulous business, and Adrian becomes just as famous as her mother.  I loved the friendship bond that the 4 of them have, as they became lifelong friends over the years.

A few years after the death of the man who was her father, Adrian started getting threatening poems each year, with her mother saying she gets them too and to ignore them.  As the years go on, especially the last couple of years, the letters began escalating to three or so a year, with the poems even more threatening; the police are informed, and a private investigator is hired, with no results.   We do get an occasional POV for the person sending the threats, but no real identity.

Over the years, it was wonderful to see Adrian eventually move to her grandparents’ house in Maryland, where she has family and even some of her friends move there too, in a calmer happy atmosphere.   The key to this story, besides the unknown threats, was the entire family setting. I loved all of Adrian’s friends, as well as Maya, her childhood friend, and especially her grandfather, who owned Rizzo’s Pizza restaurant.   The other big part, focuses on Raylan (Maya’s brother) who tragically lost his wife, and left him having to take care of his two children.  What starts out as a friendship, will later on become a slow burn romance, which I hoped would bring them together, as they made such a wonderful pairing.  I also loved loved Sadie, Adrian’s big dog, and Jasper, Raylan’s dog, who was so in love with Sadie.  Lol cute and perfect.

As we get closer to the last ¼ of the book, the suspense and tension increases as everything is escalating, with a crazed killer on the loose for other victims, and Adrian is on the list.  Legacy was a fabulous romance suspense thriller, that not only held my breath as we raced to the climax, but I absolutely loved the entire friendship, family bonds and romance.  Adrian was a fantastic heroine. Nora Roberts amazingly gives us so many wonderful characters in this book, which had me caring about them all.  Legacy is so well written by Roberts, and has a bit of everything; family, friendship, two wonderful and loyal dogs, children, as well as being an intense suspense thriller.  You need to be reading this book.

The Star Crossed Sisters of Tuscany by Lori Nelson Spielman-Review

The Star Crossed Sisters of Tuscany by Lori Nelson Spielman-Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Since the day Filomena Fontana cast a curse upon her sister more than two hundred years ago, not one second-born Fontana daughter has found lasting love. Some, like second-born Emilia, the happily-single baker at her grandfather’s Brooklyn deli, claim it’s an odd coincidence. Others, like her sexy, desperate-for-love cousin Lucy, insist it’s a true hex. But both are bewildered when their great-aunt calls with an astounding proposition: If they accompany her to her homeland of Italy, Aunt Poppy vows she’ll meet the love of her life on the steps of the Ravello Cathedral on her eightieth birthday, and break the Fontana Second-Daughter Curse once and for all.

Against the backdrop of wandering Venetian canals, rolling Tuscan fields, and enchanting Amalfi Coast villages, romance blooms, destinies are found, and family secrets are unearthed—secrets that could threaten the family far more than a centuries-old curse.

Review:

The Star-Crossed Sisters of Tuscany by Lori Nelson Spielman is a standalone novel.  200 years ago, Filomena Fontana cast a curse on her sister that no second born daughter will find a lasting love, and over these years, not one has. Emilia Fontana, our heroine, is content to have her own apartment, and a cute cat named, Claws.  She works for the family deli/bakery, making cannoli’s, and doesn’t mind being bossed around by her Nonna.  Then one day Emilia gets a letter from her Aunt Poppy, whom she hasn’t seen in years.  Poppy wants to go to Italy and is offering Emilia an all expenses paid vacation to go with her; eventually Emilia will decide to go, and her cousin Lucy will go with them to Italy. Poppy ensures the two young ladies that she will break the curse while they are in Italy.

Both Emilia and Lucy recognize that Poppy is ill, and this trip was for her to meet her old love, Rico at the Ravello Cathedral, after a promise they made to meet over 60 years ago.

Poppy, was a blessing for the girls, teaching them how to let go, and learn to enjoy life and open themselves up to the feeling of love and life. We did get a POV between Poppy and Rico’s time together during the war, as she would tell the girls about her wonderful love, and in doing they will learn some terrible betrayals, secrets and lies among the family during their journey through Italy.  We the reader also got a beautiful eyeful of Italy, as Spielman gloriously described all the wonderful sites as they toured places like Tuscany, Venice, Milan, Naples, etc.

What follows is a heartwarming journey of discovery, as both Emilia and Lucy embrace life, love and happiness. The Star-Crossed Sisters of Tuscany was not only entertaining, but emotional as well.  I loved Poppy, Emilia and even Lucy, and how their lives changed for the better, though there were some sad parts.  This was a very well written enjoyable story, with three fantastic women who truly became a true sisterhood. I recommended you read The Star Crossed Sisters of Tuscany and enjoy the ride.

Review:

The Vanished Queen by Lizbeth Campbell is a standalone epic fantasy.  This is the first time I have read Campbell, and after completing this book, I hope to read more of her, as The Vanished Queen was a fantastic read.  The story has three POV’s; Anza, Esvar and Mirantha.

We meet Anza, our heroine, at that start when she is sneaks into the library where all books have been locked up and forbidden. She comes across the diary of Queen Mirantha, who disappeared or was killed 12 years by her husband, the King.  The diary, as Anza will read, details Mirantha’s hard life with the evil and corrupt King Karolje, who rules the kingdom with fear and terror under a vicious rule, which has created a resistance that is bent on overthrowing him. Mirantha loves her two sons, Tevin and Esvar, who even to this day, love  and mourn their mother.

Anza, whose father was executed by the King, becomes more determined to join the resistance, as she reads Mirantha’s journal.  When she meets Sparrow, the leader of the resistance, she proves that she is an asset, especially as she has been trained by her father to excel in fighting and bow shooting. Anza was a fabulous heroine, as she was strong, smart, independent and loyal, not to mention her hatred of the king.  After a resistance attack, Anza is taken to be questioned by a bad corrupt captain, only to be saved by Prince Esvar, who claimed she was innocent of any wrong doing.

Prince Esvar, the second son, wants to protect and help his brother, who is the heir to the throne.  They both know their father has no qualms in killing them, if they stand in his way.  Esvar will eventually befriend Anza, and uses this opportunity to approach the resistance to help defeat his father.  With Anza at his side, Esvar tries to convince Sparrow and her team to help him eliminate the close supporters of the King, and help them defeat the King.  Can Sparrow and the resistance trust the Prince?

In the Queen’s journal, we learn how horrific Karojle ruled and destroyed innocent people, as well as making her life difficult, even to the point of killing someone close to her, who she was having an affair with, as well as other friends.  Then she is taken prisoner to disappear, but everyone knew the King was behind her ‘disappearance’.

In a short time, Anza and Esvar will find themselves attracted to each other, which will become a slow built romance that remains in the background.  I loved both Anza and Esvar, as they were great together, with Esvar determined to help his brother take the throne, even if it meant his death.  Early on the story was a bit slow, but as in all fantasy, the beginning introduces all the major characters, when we learn about this world.   The world building was very well done, with many details to give us a glimpse at these wonderful characters, and the political intrigue, struggles and the battle to defeat evil.

The Vanished Queen is a wonderful dark adventure, with fantastic characters, and a world filled with evil, secrets, lies, deceit & betrayal. I will say there is an amazing twist that blew us away.  Very well done.  The last 1/3 of the book was intense, exciting, non-stop action, that had me on the edge, as we raced to the climax.  What I loved the most about this book, was that it was a standalone, not having us wait for a couple more books.  Thank you, Lizbeth Campbell for this fantastic story.  If you like fantasy at its best, I suggest you read The Vanished Queen.
