••••••••••

REVIEW: HER DARK PAST is the fourth and final installment in Alexandrea Weis’s contemporary, adult THE CORDE NOIRE slightly paranormal, erotic romance, BDSM series focusing on the members of an elite, secretive society known as Corde Noire. This is businessman Declan Corinth, and erotic, romance writer Brynn Adler’s story line. HER DARK PAST can be read as a stand alone but for cohesion and backstory, I recommend reading the series in order as there is an ongoing investigation and search for answers about the murder of Nathan Cole whose story was told in book one DARK PERCEPTION. There is also a crossover connection with Alexandrea’s COVER TO COVERS series with Cary Anderson (The Bondage Club #3) and Donovan Books as Brynn Adler’s agent and publisher.

Told from several third person perspectives including Brynn and Declan HER DARK PAST continues to focus on the search for the person responsible for the murder of billionaire businessman Nathan Cole. Brynn Adler is Nathan Coles’s ex-wife, and the woman about to take over all of his assets and possessions. As a member of the infamous Corde Noire Society- an exclusive BDSM club- Nathan’s murder casts questionable doubt amongst the members of the Corde Noire. Enter Declan Corinth, a former sub and a reluctant Dom who is tasked with ferreting out whatever information he can from our story line heroine. What ensues is the building romance between Brynn and Declan, and the revelation about the who and why of Nathan Cole’s demise.

Brynn Adler has a psychic connection to the past; when she steps into a room she is able to ‘see’ the events that have occurred, and Ren Plancharde, the current head of the Corde Noire Society, needs whatever information Brynn Adler is able to reveal. Declan Corinth owes much of his current success to artist Ren Plancharde, and all debts will be wiped clean if Declan is able to seduce Brynn into revealing the information about the person(s) responsible for Nathan’s death.

The relationship between Declan and Brynn begins as a lie. Declan is a reluctant Dom ordered to seduce Brynn into a D/s relationship-a relationship and lifestyle that once destroyed Brynn’s marriage to Nathan Cole- a man whose sexual proclivities bent towards the dangerous and dark. As the story line progresses Brynn begins to place her trust in a man whose attraction to Brynn is marred by a debt owed to Ren Plancharde. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense although Declan’s attempts to Dominate are fraught with guilt and sorrow. Brynn’s reluctance to re-enter the D/s lifestyle casts an aura of questionable consent.

The world building continues to focus on the murder of Nathan Cole. Nathan’s ghost continues to ‘haunt’ a number of the story line characters including our heroine Brynn Adler, and Ms. Sabine Cleo- a woman with mystical powers that currently holds Nathan Cole’s spirit hostage and prevents him from moving on. We are introduced to Gabriel Durand, Ms. Cleo’s nephew, and a man with some extraordinary powers of his own. Gabriel will be featured in Alexandrea Weis’s new spin-off series THE MISTRESS MAKER- as the new head of the Corde Noire Society.

HER DARK PAST is an intriguing, exciting and revealing story line. The true nature of Nathan Cole’s murder, and the people responsible, comes to light but Nathan’s spirit will continue to haunt this plane of existence. The premise is sexy, enchanting, spirited and inventive; the characters are sensual and passionate; the romance is moving and emotional. HER DARK PAST is an enthralling and magical story line; a must read for fans of Alexandrea Weis and her CORDE NOIRE series.

Woman with her hands tied up behind her back

Excerpt

In the back of the Mercedes, Brynn was wiping the raindrops from her face and neck when the rear passenger door flew open and another person scooted inside.
She almost screamed for her driver when she saw the man in the sharply cut black suit slide into the seat next to her. His riveting blue eyes fixated on her, and Brynn’s mouth dropped open.
Oh, shit!
“Well, well, Brynn Alder,” he said in a voice akin to honey. “I thought that was you. Forgive the intrusion, but I have wanted to meet you. I’m Declan Corinth.” He held out his hand.
Brynn stared at his hand as if it was a nuclear missile. What in the hell is he doing here?
When her eyes rose to his face, his good looks made her mouth go dry. With black wavy hair and sharp blue eyes, he was even sexier than his portrait. Declan’s features were sharp, but his nose was a little flat and his chin somewhat small compared to his square jaw. He had thin lips that complimented his looks. Just the idea of kissing those lips made Brynn want to—
Shake his hand! “Mr. Corinth.” She took his hand. “Why are you in my car?”
While holding her hand, his eyes examined her face, sending a tingling sensation up from Brynn’s toes.
“I was coming to Ren’s, and I saw you. I’m ashamed to say I’m a fan, Ms. Adler. I’ve read all your books. I think your interpretation of the BDSM lifestyle is unique.”
“Interesting choice of words, Mr. Corinth.” The fact that the attractive man had read her books was even more unnerving than his being in her car. “Are you familiar with BDSM?”
He kept a firm grip on her hand. “I have several associates who are ardent admirers of the lifestyle.”
She yanked her hand away. “By associates, I take it you mean Ren and his little society.”
“Ren is a business associate, Ms. Adler. As for his society, I’m familiar with it.”
She sat back in her seat, studying Declan’s compelling features. “How did you end up in one of his portraits?”
He hiked up a dark eyebrow, his eyes brimming with amusement. “You’ve seen the painting? And what did you think?”
“Ren told me a local businesswoman commissioned it. She was apparently quite taken with you.”
“Mabel Bergeron was more than taken with me. She was obsessed.”
Declan’s soulful chuckle resonated in Brynn’s groin, and then she was struck by the name. “Mabel Bergeron? But she ….” Her voice trailed off, afraid to say what she was thinking.
“She owns a bondage club in the Garden District.” Declan sat back in his seat. “Your ex-husband was a frequent customer of hers. We met at Mabel’s club.”
A cold realization settled over Brynn. Declan Corinth was a player—a Dom. How else would he know about the bondage club Nathan had belonged to, or be friends with Ren Plancharde? Feeling foolish, Brynn glanced at Bob, still awaiting instructions behind the wheel.
“I should go. I’m keeping you from your meeting with Ren.”
“Nonsense.” Declan motioned for Bob to start the car. “I’ll see you back to The Shallows. You shouldn’t be alone today.”
“You know where I live?”
“I heard you took over Nathan’s old penthouse.”
Brynn’s reservations mounted as the engine roared to life. “No, Bob, wait,” she called. “Mr. Corinth was just leaving.”
The shock in Declan’s blue eyes was entertaining. She suspected that, being a Dom, he wasn’t used to having a woman tell him what to do.
With a curt nod, he reached for the car door and then glanced back at her. “Can I ask you a question?”
His voice reminded her of a dark whiskey. Smooth, soulful, and reaching down to her—
“Of course, Mr. Corinth.”
He shimmied closer to her. “It’s Declan, not Mr. Corinth.”
Her toes were tingling again. “What would you like to know?”
“How do you get ideas for your stories? They seem so real.”
Brynn shook her head, convinced that he was baiting her. If he was an associate of Ren’s and knew Nathan, then he must have known of her past.
“A writer never divulges where she gets her inspiration.” Brynn smugly sat back in her seat. “Good evening, Mr. Corinth.”
The surly grin he gave her damn near knocked her to the car floor. He was even more devastating when he was angry.
Declan shoved the card door open. As the sound of the rain hitting the sidewalk drifted into the car, he said, “We’ll see each other again, Ms. Adler.”
Brynn just smiled and waited for him to leave.
He bounded into the pouring rain and slammed the door closed. Brynn sank into her cold leather seat as he jogged through the open gate and into Ren’s pristine courtyard.
“No, we will not see each other again, Mr. Corinth.” She rocked her head back and closed her eyes. “That would be very dangerous for me.”

After accidently uncovering Ren’s underground activities, the eccentric painter offers Ella a glimpse into his world of pleasure and pain. Intrigued, he decides to make Ella a part of his sinister Corde Noire Society, but his chef isn’t quite ready to commit.

Absolute submission isn’t all Ren wants from the stubborn woman. He has big plans for her gift, too. The only question is … will Ella be willing to give in to his desires when the time comes?

The darkness within can hide a lifetime of secrets.

••••••••••••••

REVIEW: HIS DARK CANVAS is the third installment in Alexandrea Weis’s contemporary, adult CORDE NOIRE slightly paranormal, erotic, BDSM series focusing on the members of an elite, secretive society known as Corde Noire. This is reclusive painter and Corde Noire society owner Ren Plancharde, and executive chef Ella Winston’s story line. HIS DARK CANVAS can be read as a stand alone but for cohesion and backstory, I recommend reading the series in order as there is an ongoing investigation and search for the missing Nathan Cole whose story was told in book one DARK PERCEPTION.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Ella and Ren) HIS DARK CANVAS is a sexually erotic story about two people whose lives intersected years before. Ella is an executive chef in need of a job when reclusive artist Ren Plencharde makes Ella an offer she cannot resist-one month/ $5,000 / live in chef to our mysterious hero. What ensues is Ella’s introduction to the Corde Noire Society-an exclusive BDSM club where membership is high and women are owned by those willing to pay for the privilege. Ren has agreed to train our heroine to be a submissive both in and out of the bedroom with the goal to have Ella ready for another Dom. But Ella has a secret that if revealed could mean the end of her relationship with Ren Plencharde but a relationship that begins to grow into something more.

Ren Plenchard is the owner of Corde Noire and a man struggling to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of billionaire Nathan Cole. Nathan is a man with a penchant for the dark and dangerous side of BDSM, and a man whose whereabouts has become the number one topic within the Corde Noire elite. Ella’s hidden ability becomes fair game when Ren is desperate to uncover the truth.

The relationship between Ella and Ren begins as a business arrangement but for all intents and purposes our hero has ‘stalked’ our heroine for a number of years. Ella is an executive chef who has fallen onto hard times and Ren’s offer comes with a secret agenda and terms. Ren is a man who has lusted after our story line heroine since the day they first met but a man who doesn’t do relationships and refuses to commit to a future or happily ever after. The $ex scenes are graphic, erotic and intense; there is some light BDSM content including spanking, obedience training and bondage.

The world building continues to focus on the hunt for Nathan Cole, and the connections to and membership into the The Corde Noire Society. The paranormal subplot focuses on the series heroines, and their psychic abilities, supernatural gifts and a ghost who is unable to move forward until reparations have been made.

HIS DARK CANVAS is an engaging story line; an imaginative tale about two people brought together by fate and circumstances. The premise is provocative; the characters are passionate and dramatic; the romance is sensual and moving. Alexandrea Weis adds another intimate story line to her exquisite and erotic Corde Noire series.

Through the haze of her apple martinis, Ella spotted someone across the wide dining room. He was different from the other patrons there to celebrate the restaurant’s two-year anniversary. With an arrogant walk, he strutted across the stone floor. Lean, muscular, and blessed with one of those bodies women would always notice, he had dark blond hair and disquieting dark green eyes. He was the kind of guy who knew he was good-looking and let everyone else know it, too. She wasn’t usually attracted to that type, but this man—his confidence intrigued her.
“You’re Ella, Ella Winston,” he said in a voice like dark chocolate fondue: deep, and wickedly sexy.
“Yeah.” She almost dropped her drink. “I’m the sous chef.”
“I know. Marcus told me.”
As his smile sank to the depths of her belly, he extended his hand, but Ella ignored it.
Don’t touch him. You know what happens when you touch them.
“So, how do you know Marcus?” Ella quickly asked, hoping to make up for her rudeness.
He laughed, looking her over. Above the din in the room, she could sense something different about his laugh. Unlike the insincere chortle of others, this man’s laugh got to her. She was having an unusual physical reaction, something that never happened to her. When most men laughed, Ella usually ran away.
“Marcus and I share the same friends.”
“What friends are those?” she asked, craving another martini.
“The wealthy kind, who like to support the arts.” He raised a green bottle of sparkling water in his hand. “I’m a painter. Marcus and I know a lot of people who like to pretend they’re patrons and keep us gainfully employed.”
“Painter?” Ella shrugged, finding it hard to believe Marcus knew any painters. “What do you paint?”
“Portraits of women. Usually with very little clothing.”
Oh yeah, I need another drink. “Is that lucrative?”
“For me it is.”
Her eyes wandered around the dining room, desperate to find a rescue. Ella needed to get away from this man before she said or did something really stupid.
“Do you like art?” he pressed.
“Some art. I think it would depend on the passion I see in a painting.”
“The passion in a painting?” That laugh again. Her toes tingled. Not good. “You sound like a painter, Ms. Winston.”
The martini glass in her hand suddenly weighed a ton. “Isn’t painting a passion for an artist, like cooking is a passion for a chef? Having a passion is a healthy thing. It reminds us that we have a soul.”
He nodded, seemingly approving of her drunken ramblings. “That’s very profound and also very true. I think you have a lot of talents yet to be discovered, Ella. May I call you Ella?”
“Ah, sure. Ella is fine.” Her mouth went dry. “What makes you think I have any talents outside of cooking?”
“I have a sense for these things.”
She tensed. Can he tell? The same thought always haunted her when she met new people. Ella fought so hard to keep her secret under control. Time to make a run for it.
“Don’t let Marcus know I have other talents. He’ll probably fire me.”
She was about to depart when he stopped her. He leaned in, and she could just make out the small cleft in his pointy chin. “I promise, if you ever need a job, I’ll hire you.”
His mouth was so close she could have kissed his perfect, thin lips. Frightened by the notion, Ella backed away. “I’ll hold you to that.”
“I hope you do, Ella.”
She should have done a million different things: asked his name, gotten his phone number, or stayed to flirt with him some more. Instead, Ella walked away. She figured it was one of those moments in life she would live to regret. Fortunately, Ella found the bar and drowned her disappointment in another apple martini.
Ella reasoned that was the way of it. You meet people and move on, and one day, if you’re lucky, you meet the interesting ones again.

REVIEW: DARK ATTRACTION is the second installment in Alexandrea Weis’s adult, contemporary, CORDE NOIRE dark erotic, paranormal romance series focusing on the members of the elite and dangerous BDSM Corde Noire Society. This is wealthy businessman Sebastian (aka Doug Morgan) Dane, and nurse Samantha (Sam) Woods story line. DARK ATTRACTION can be read as a stand alone but for cohesion and back story I recommend reading the series in order as there is a continuing premise that is building with each successive installment.

Told from dual third person perspectives DARK ATTRACTION follows nurse Sam Woods as she endeavors to become billionaire Sebastian Dane’s latest submissive. Sam first met Sebastian while caring for his mother at a local hospital. Never one to pay attention to the patient’s family, Sam will soon be introduced to her new neighbor Doug Morgan – a man who offers the world of Domination and submission to our story line heroine. Sam has never considered herself submissive, and is unaware of the lifestyle that Doug is offering. What ensues is the building relationship between Doug aka Sebastian, and Sam, and Sam’s struggles to keep secret her ability to see and talk with ghosts.

Sam is able to communicate with the dead-those who have been unable to move on-but most importantly the spirits who need Sam to do something for them. Throughout DARK ATTRACTION three troubled spirits continue to make their presence known to our story line heroine-each with a connection to Sebastian, and the missing and presumed dead Nathan Cole (Dark Perception book 1).

The relationship between Sebastian and Sam is one of D/s. There is an immediate attraction between our couple but Sebastian makes no promises of love for the future. Sam is a woman who is slowly falling for the man who now controls every aspect of her life, and a man with ghosts of his own. Sebastian is a strong alpha and dominant character who is unable to keep from falling for the woman in his care. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense. Sebastian is passionate about the rules and regulations for his D/s relationship.

There are several secondary and supporting characters including spirits and ghosts, co-workers, and friends. We learn a little bit about Sam’s past and her struggles with her devout religious family; Sebastian’s past remains a bit of a mystery although there was some trouble between father and son which is an ongoing issue in the current time line.

DARK ATTRACTION is a story of friendship and love; submission and Domination; passion, intrigue and suspense. There are moments of spirited communication revealing sins of the past, and the realization that everyone hides behind a personal and public mask. The premise is captivating and provocative; the characters are emotional and intense; the romance is passionate and challenging.

excerpt

Sebastian hated this part; walking into the ICU from the waiting room. The beeps, bells, and whirring of the machinery, which kept the occupants of the ICU alive, upset him. They were alien noises that grated against his nerves.
He did his best to not let the sounds get to him, but as he went to his mother’s room, he felt his skin prickle with that well-ingrained fear of hospitals. The result of a precocious childhood.
When he reached his mother’s doorway, he spotted the pretty nurse, the one who insisted on being called Sam and not Samantha. His eyes drifted from the nurse to his mother in the bed. Her color was better, but she was still hooked up to the ventilator. Shit!
Falling at her home, she had hit her head and been knocked unconscious. The surgery to relieve the bleeding in her skull had been successful—or so the doctor insisted—but she was still not awake.
“She’s doing better today, Mr. Reinhardt,” the attractive brunette nurse with the long ponytail said to him.
How many times had he told her that his last name was Dane, not Reinhardt? Still, she called him by his stepfather’s name. His palms itched to correct her, but he refrained.
“Has she woken up at all?”
“Yes, she opens her eyes now and then, which is a very good sign. We should have her off that breathing tube in a day or two.”
He followed the nurse’s perfect profile. Sebastian thought her almost doll-like. Even down to her porcelain skin and petite, almost little girl figure, everything about her reminded him of a doll.
“Thank you, Sam. You’ve been so encouraging these past few days. I thought for a while she wouldn’t make it.”
“I told you she would make it.” Sam stretched her pouty lips into an attractive smile. “I have a sense about these things.” As if hearing something in the outer hallway, she raised her uncanny eyes to the door. “I’ll be back.”
She was gone before he could ask any more questions. Sam always did that.
It was as if she looked through him, and not at him, whenever he came to visit his mother. What he wouldn’t give to have her see him, to have the little nurse with those amazing eyes see him for what he really was. Ah, but that was for another time and place.
He walked closer to the bed and held his mother’s hand. Still warm and soft the way he remembered it as a child. With the ugly purple bruise on the right side of her face and the thick white bandage on her head, she didn’t resemble the mother he had known. Gone were her fancy rings, diamond bracelets, and designer clothes. The blue hospital gown made her look paler than usual, and without her always fastidiously applied makeup, she appeared older, much older than her sixty-five years.
“I’m here, Mother. You’re doing better. Much better.”
He felt the slightest pressure on his hand, as if she had heard him.
“That’s it, squeeze my hand. Let me know you can hear me.”
This time, her grasp was stronger and more deliberate.
His heart soared with relief. It was a small step, but it was progress.
“Looks like she’s coming out of it,” Sam surmised, entering the room. She pulled a penlight from her white jacket pocket and flashed the light in his mother’s eyes.
His mother frowned.
“Did you see that?” he demanded. “She frowned when you shined the light in her eyes.”
Sam shrugged her shoulders, not seeming very impressed. “Like I said, Mr. Reinhardt, she’s waking up.”
Her dismissive tone made that certain itch come alive in Sebastian. The one he always got when he discovered a new … project.
Sam went back to her table outside the room door and made some notes on his mother’s chart.
Giving his mother a kiss on the cheek, Sebastian whispered, “I’ll be back tomorrow.” Exiting the room, he stopped by Sam’s table. “Thank you for taking such good care of her.”
Sam never looked up from her notes. “I’m glad she’s doing better.”
“Will you be here tomorrow?”
Sam shook her head and became distracted by a patient in the room next door to his mother’s. “I’m off for a few days, Mr. Reinhardt. I’m sure your mother will be gone by the time I get back.”
He never got to ask her anything else. She ducked into the other patient’s room and went to the monitor above the bed.
Sebastian grinned. He would see the pretty little Sam Woods again. He wasn’t going to let this one get away.

REVIEW: DARK PERCEPTION is the first installment in Alexandrea Weis’s adult, contemporary, CORDE NOIRE dark erotic, paranormal romance series focusing on the members of the elite and dangerous BDSM Corde Noire Society. This is wealthy businessman Nathan Cole, and pianist/psychic Melinda Harris’s story line.

NOTE: The story line contains questionable sexual situations and triggers that may not be suitable for some readers.

Told from close third person perspective (Melinda) DARK PERCEPTION follows the building relationship between psychic Melinda Harris, and the man who would destroy her heart-Nathan Cole. Melinda is a psychic who ‘sees’ the future (and ghosts), and Nathan is a regular customer who wants Melinda for himself. As a wealthy businessman in New Orleans, Nathan ventures into the property game where he believes Melinda can ‘foresee’ his successes and failures. What ensues is Nathan’s seduction of Melinda-a woman who is about to lose control of her life.

The relationship between Nathan and Melinda is quick to develop. Nathan is a Dominant and he demands submission from Melinda in every aspect of his life, and herein lies the proverbial ‘elephant in the room’. Melinda quickly learns that Nathan is not the man she presumed him to be, and in this, our heroine finds herself in a dark and dangerous situation as it pertains to her safety with the man with whom she is falling in love. The $ex scenes are graphic, intense, and not without some questionable acts of power and control. Nathan’s temper pushes the envelope of consent.

DARK PERCEPTION is a dark, erotic romance where one man’s obsession with power and control is ill-fated, ruinous and tragic. The premise is fascinating but alarming; the characters are controversial including a heroine with questionable desires and a lack of self-preservation. The romance is dark, destructive, and doomed. DARK PERCEPTION is a dramatic look at the ultimate cost of power and control.

excerpt

Nathan gently removed a stray strand of hair from her face and placed it behind her ear. As he
stared into her green eyes, the images of the two of them came blazing back to life, even more

powerful than before.

“You’re doing that on purpose!” she shouted, and slammed her flute down on the bar.

“What?” Nathan seemed astonished by her reaction.

She backed away from him. “You’re thinking those thoughts.”

“What thoughts?”

Melinda searched his eyes while he inched closer.

Nathan’s mouth pressed into a thin line, adding to the tension in the air. “I think I should go.

You’ve had a long day. We can talk again tomorrow after you get settled in. We will need to go

over my agenda.”

What’s wrong with me? Get a grip.

Running her fingertips over her forehead, she tried to clear her mind. “What agenda?”

Nathan picked up his glass of champagne and downed the contents. “I have meetings

scheduled this week and next about that property development we spoke of the other day.” He

turned his eyes to her. “There’s a formal cocktail party at the home of a New Orleans socialite

next weekend. She’s interested in my plans for that property and wants to talk to me about

funding the project. You’re to accompany me to the party and all my meetings, then you can tell

me what you feel about these people.” His eyes traveled over her Tshirt and torn jeans. “You’ll

need to dress professionally for the meetings, and you’ll need a formal gown for the party. I’ll

have Bob take you to Canal Place for some new clothes.”

“I can’t afford new clothes, Nathan.”

He raised his brown eyes to her. “I’ll take care of that, not to worry.”

“You’ve given me this apartment, furniture, a new television. I can’t have you buying me clothes,

too.”

“Melinda, you’re my assistant now. I can’t have you escorting me places dressed like that.” He

motioned to her clothes. “You need to look the part.”

Melinda wanted to argue with him, but she thought better of it. He wanted to buy her some new

outfits, what of it? After all, this is what she had always wanted, to be taken care of.

“Yes, Nathan.” She gave him a weak smile.

“Good girl.” He abruptly headed for the door. “I’ll come by tomorrow evening and we can go over

my itinerary in detail. I have a new cell phone coming for you tomorrow, as well as a credit card.

Use the card to buy your clothes and anything you may need for your job.”

“A credit card? Are you sure you want to trust me with that?”

Nathan smirked with amusement. “Just make sure you don’t go too crazy. I still have to justify it

all to my accountant at the end of the month as a business expense.”

“Is that why you’re telling everyone I’m your assistant?”

He frowned at her. “What do you mean?”

“If you tell people I’m your assistant, even though you already have a secretary, don’t you think

that will look funny?”

He squinted his eyes, appearing interested in her reasoning. “Funny, in what way?”

“Perhaps everyone thinks I’m not here as an assistant, but as something else.”

“What else?” he questioned with a glimmer of mischief in his eyes.

“You know what else, Nathan.” She turned away, but he held her arm.

“What else, Melinda?”

Melinda gazed into his dark eyes and then she knew. The images she had seen earlier of them

together were his. She could feel it as sure as she could feel the warmth of his hand.

Nathan let her go. “I hired you to be my psychic, that’s all. If others read more into the

relationship than that, it’s their problem.”

Despite what he told her, Melinda knew Nathan wanted her, but something was holding him

back, something she could not see. In her mind’s eye, she searched for an answer, but only

foggy images came through.

“I’m very happy you’re here,” he said, and then he leaned forward and kissed her cheek.

Melinda almost grabbed for the doorframe to keep from falling to her knees. The unexpected

wave of electricity from the caress of his lips was catastrophic.

“Get some rest,” he told her. “We have a big week ahead, and you have your work cut out for

you.”

Confused, Melinda watched him make his way back to his penthouse. Perhaps he didn’t send

those images to her.

Was it me?

Melinda quickly shut the door and threw her body against it. “Oh, I’m in trouble.”

Right after Melinda spoke the words, a wave of fear enveloped her. She turned to her living

room, and as quickly as it had come, the feeling departed. She gazed about the room, reaching

out with her mind to whatever entity had called to her, but nothing came.

Shaking it off, Melinda picked up a box and carried it to her bedroom. When she stepped into

the hall, the doorway to the storage room was wide open and the light inside was on. Setting the

box on the floor, she went to the room and looked around. Nothing appeared to her, and there

were no moans or rattling of chains. But as she stood in the stark square room, the hairs on her

arms stood up. In her mouth, the acrid taste of dread. Melinda fought her instinct to flee, and

instead opened her mind.

“I feel your fear,” she pronounced.

Then a woman’s soft voice whispered in her ear, “Run.”

Melinda’s eyes flew open. She backed out of the room, flipped off the lights, and shut the door.

She stood in the hall staring at the handle on the door as her trepidation faded. There was no

lock on the door, no way to secure it. She had a sudden urge to make sure this door stayed

closed, because what was inside of that room scared her.
