ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 4, 2022

One year ago, Arianna Donovan and Will Jameson met on a dare and spent a perfect 24 together before going their separate ways. She thought they would stay in touch, but he disappeared without a word.

Arianna thought she’d moved on. But when Will shows up at a family dinner with her older—and very protective—brother, she’s angry and confused. How could he possibly forget to mention that he was friends with her brother? No one knows about their past and Arianna wants to keep things that way. No matter how tempting Will is.

When he walked away a year ago, Will thought it was for the best. Staying away from Arianna was the smart thing to do, especially with how protective her older brother—his friend and fellow soldier—can be. Time and distance will work wonders when you’re trying to stay away from someone. Now that he’s seen her again, he forgets all about doing the smart thing. He’ll just have to first convince her to let go of her anger and give him another chance.

Will isn’t above playing the nostalgia card, and when he challenges Arianna to a sexy game of truth or dare, she can’t resist. Neither one is ready to tell the world what they’re doing, but how long can they possibly keep things a secret when there are Donovans ready to meddle around every corner?

REVIEW:DARE ME is the first instalment in Samantha Chase’s contemporary, adult THE DONOVANS romance series. This is twenty-three year old, radiation therapist Arianna Donovan, and thirty-two year old architect Will Jameson’s story line.

Told from dual third person perspectives DARE ME follows the second chance relationship, of a sorts, between twenty-three year old, radiation therapist Arianna Donovan, and thirty-two year old architect Will Jameson. Approximately one year earlier, Arianna Donovan met Will Jameson in San Francisco, twenty-four hours before returning home to Laurel Bay, North Carolina. Believing she had found her soul mate, Arianna tried desperately to convince Will they were meant to be, with the hopes of a long distance relationship in their future but Arianna had no idea that Will knew exactly who she was, and he wasn’t willing to cross the line with his ‘best friend’s’ little sister. Fast forward to present day wherein Arianna is considering leaving Laurel Bay, in search of her own independence away from her suffocating family but Arianna is blindsided when the man she has never forgotten has taken a job working for her brother Liam. All does not go well as Arianna’s family sets a plan into motion to set up Will with Arianna’s older sister Ryleigh, a plan that forces Will into a fake relationship with someone he doesn’t want. What ensues is the rebuilding friendship but secret relationship between Will and Arianna, and the potential fall out when the Donovan family uncover the truth.

The relationship between Arianna and Will is a rekindling relationship that struggles in the face of secrets and lies, and the ongoing interference from the Donovan clan. The Donovan family is controlling and obnoxious, constantly getting involved in one another’s lives, involvement that is pushing away their youngest daughter. The parents try to control their daughters’s lives; the brothers are a constant source of heart ache and intrusion. The family tries desperately to keep the siblings under control but everyone refuses to help our story line heroine when she first returned to Laurel Bay. There are no $ex scenes-everything is implied.

We are introduced to the over protective, over bearing and often irritating Donovan siblings: Liam, Patrick, Ryleigh and Jamie; their unpleasant parents Kate and Shane Donovan, and uncle Ronan.

DARE ME is a story of family, relationships, friendships and love. The premise is entertaining but I struggled with the Donovan family dynamic and their overwhelming need to interfere and control which made my reading experience difficult and anxiety-filled affecting the overall enjoyment. DARE ME is a well written story line but the character’s attitudes, personalities and presentation were problematic for this reader.

New York Times and USA Today Bestseller/contemporary romance writer Samantha Chase released her debut novel, Jordan’s Return, in November 2011. Although she waited until she was in her 40’s to publish for the first time, writing has been a lifelong passion. Her motivation to take that step was her students: teaching creative writing to elementary age students all the way up through high school and encouraging those students to follow their writing dreams gave Samantha the confidence to take that step as well.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 28, 2016

Five coworkers.
Four drinks.
Three glances.
Two fleeting smiles.
One dare.

A dare that will change my life.

That’s all it takes to send me plummeting into the arms of the mysterious Holt Hamilton. Behind his crystal blue eyes is a secret, one that screams danger but calls to me anyway.

My name is Saige Phillips.

I never walk away from a dare.

•••••••

REVIEW: DARE ME (Dare Me #1)  is an erotic romance story line written by Rebecca Shea that focuses on a forbidden romance between Holt Hamilton, the co-owner of Jackson-Hamilton Aviation, and interior designer at JHA Saige Phillips. Holt’s attraction to Saige begins following a night on the town but his connections to his fellow employee are wound tighter than anyone could have imagined.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Holt and Saige) DARE ME follows the building relationship between Holt and Saige-a relationship built upon betrayal and lies. Following a successful week at work five coworkers meet for drinks at one of Chicago’s newest night spots where Saige Phillips will find herself face to face with the man who stops her heart-Holt Hamilton-the owner of the company for which she works. On a dare, Saige will ask Holt out for drinks and when ensues is the growing love between two people whose secrets and back stories will affect one another’s lives, and their future together.

Holt is the well respected CEO of his own aviation company. His is ‘sex on a stick’, and a man who guards his personal backstory from the woman he loves. Saige is a young woman whose earlier years are shrouded in loss, grief and heartbreak. Returning to Chicago, finds our heroine working in the corporate world surrounded by rich billionaires and CEOs, and the possibility of a future with the man whose secrets are about to unfold. The amazing chemistry between our leading couple is palpable; the $ex scenes are intimate and hot.

DARE ME has a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Saige’s roommate, and her four fellow co-workers whose personal lives are the topic of morning texts and social media updates. We are also introduced to Holt’s BFF Jack, Holt’s mother, and the man who is now the center of her life. Saige’s Uncle Brent, and Saige’s mother are the supporting factors in Saige’s life, and a welcome respite when her life begins to spiral out of control.

The world building focuses on relationship between Holt and Saige, as well as the secrets and lies Holt keeps hidden from the woman that he loves. The proverbial ‘elephant in the room’ is easily deduced early on, but the reveal finds Saige pushing away the man that she loves.

DARE ME is a provocative but familiar story line-one I have read many times in the past. The premise is dramatic and emotional; the characters are heartbreaking and beautiful; the romance is passionate and fated. Rebecca Shea writes a riveting and consuming story with a breathtaking happily ever after.

excerpt

Six lemon drop shots line the center of our table, and we’ve all refreshed our drinks and have fresh glasses of ice water. “Ready?” Emery asks, and looks around at everyone, a hint of a challenge in her eyes. “Let’s do it,” Zay says and rubs his hands together, ready to begin. Emery beams with delight. “Okay, so we’re going counterclockwise. Rowan goes first, then Saige, then Zay, then Kinsley, and I’m last. We’ll ask you Truth or Dare. If you pick truth, we’ll use the questions from the app. If it’s a dare, we’ll come up with one as a group. Rules though, friends.” She looks pointedly at each of us. “It has to be safe, but it has to push boundaries.” The guys grumble. “I refuse to kiss Rowan,” Zay teases. “You’re not my type,” Rowan jokes back. “So, Ro.” Emery grins at him. “Truth or Dare?” Rowan rubs his chin and ponders his two options for a minute. “Truth.” “I knew he’d go easy on us,” Kinsley says. “Hey hey,” he chides. “Let’s start off nice and slow. Build our way up.” Emery taps the app on her phone, and the questions scramble. “Okay,” she says and chuckles to herself as she reads the question before reading it back to us. “Have you ever cheated on a boyfriend or girlfriend?” “Really?” Rowan raises an unenthused eyebrow. “That’s the question?” “Yep.” She turns the phone to face him, and he turns up his nose. “Yes,” he answers, sounding bored. “I’ve cheated on both.” “What!” Kinsley screams across the table. “You’ve had a boyfriend and a girlfriend?” “Yes,” he mumbles and takes a sip of wine. “It was a long time ago.” She drops her head back in laughter. “I need to hear more about this.” I glance over to where Holt stands with his guest, and we make eye contact again, sharing a brief but friendly smile before I quickly turn my attention back to my friends. Emery is smirking at me, which means she caught me looking. “No, you will not hear more about this.” Rowan raises his chin in defiance, then snatches Emery’s phone. “Moving on. Saige, truth or dare?” I glance around the table at my friends and, without much thinking, blurt out, “Dare.” *Oh, shit.* My stomach twists into a giant knot as those words fall from my tongue. Everyone begins hooting and hollering, and I can’t help but laugh along with them. “Remember, safe,” Emery reminds us. “And, friends, let’s be reasonable.” “Reasonable,” Kinsley snorts. “Okay, let’s put our heads together, guys.” They lean in to the center of the small round pub table, and whisper-yell over the tops of empty drink glasses and finally all sit back in their chairs. “Bad idea.” Zay shakes his head and purses his lips. “I don’t like it.” “Well, if one of you disagrees, then maybe you should come up with something new,” I chime in and look at Zay, who looks irritated. “Not in this lifetime.” Kinsley giggles. “You ready, Saige?” I swallow hard against my dry throat. “No.” *Truth. Always choose truth. What was I thinking?* “Too bad.” She grabs a shot off the table. “You are going to go ask Holt Hamilton out for a drink.” “What?” I snap at her. I look around the table like my friends have lost their damn minds. “I can’t ask him out for drinks. He’ll think it’s a date, and dating a superior is strictly prohibited per the company handbook. There’s this thing called ethics in the workplace, people. Have you all lost your minds? Are you all crazy? Are you trying to get me fired?” They all roar with laughter and my heart races. “First of all,” Kinsley tips her head back and swallows the lemon drop shot, “it’s not against company policy to date a coworker. You cannot date your direct manager. Holt is not your direct manager.” She looks pleased, like she just solved a murder case. “He owns the fucking company,” I bark at her. “That pretty much qualifies as my manager.” “Pipe down, little one.” Rowan pats my hand. “It’s just a drink, and purely innocent.” I glower at him. “You said you’d have my back. This is not having my back, Ro.” I wipe my sweaty hands on my skirt. “It’s all in pure fun.” His eyebrows dance at me. “Tell him we dared you if you have to.” My frown deepens. “So I look like a thirteen-year-old? Hi, Mr. Hamilton. My friends over there dared me to ask you out. Will you have drinks with me? No thanks.” I cross my arms over my chest in defiance. Then, realizing that I probably look like I’m actually thirteen, I uncross them. Zay chimes in, “I’ll bet one hundred dollars she won’t do it.” “Chicken, Saige?” Kinsley kicks me under the table. “I’m not a chicken, you assholes,” I grumble. “I’m reasonable. This is not reasonable. I’d like to keep my job.” Emery nudges me. “It’s all in fun, and I am dying to see the look on his face when you ask him.” I glance at Holt, feeling anxiety building in my stomach. Suddenly, he turns in our general direction to find all of us watching him. His brows pinch together in a confused look, but he offers us all a polite smile and a little nod of his head. *Ugh… *“Fine. I’ll do it.” I add my two whiny cents, “This is really stupid, though, and if I wasn’t already close to being three sheets to the wind, I’d just take the damn shot.” I fan my face. The heat from the alcohol or the stuffy bar is getting to me. “Atta girl!” Rowan grabs my hand and helps me down from the tall barstool. My knees wobble, and I press a hand my cheek to cool the flush crawling across my face. Between my nerves and the alcohol, my stomach is twisting and turning. “Just breathe,” Rowan whispers in my ear as he grips my hand tightly. “Just ask him if he’d be interested in grabbing a drink sometime.” “And when he says no?” “You just smile and come back to us.” Zay clears his throat. “What if he says yes?” I turn around to shoot him a death glare. Emery answers, “Then just know that she asked out the hottest man alive, and he accepted. Win-win.” She offers me a reassuring smile. “Hottest man alive?” Zay mumbles under his breath and pffts into his glass of beer. “Yes!” Emery and Kinsley say simultaneously. “I can’t do this,” I say, reaching for my chair. Nerves are getting the better of me, and my knees are literally knocking together. “You can,” Rowan assures me. “Go.”

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: DOWN THE AISLE is the third instalment in Christine Bell’s Dare Me contemporary romance series. Down the Aisle is a novella that re-visits Lacey and Galen, our couple from Down for the Count-Dare Me #1.

Down the Aisle focuses on Lacey as she prepares for her upcoming marriage to Galen but not all is well in the relationship department. Our couple have been trying to get pregnant for close to a year, and each day brings the heartbreaking news that they are either not pregnant or the adoption has been turned down.

The reader watches as Lacy and Galen face rejection once again just days before their wedding and we watch as the couple struggle with the intimacy of their relationship.

Down the Aisle is a short story of one couple’s struggles with infertility all the while preparing for their impending nuptials. Lacey’s BFF abducts our heroine for a night on the town and for a few hours she is able to forget about her sorrows, but reality will come crashing back.

The world building is limited in the short storyline but most of the major players have been introduced in previous novels. But there is also the introduction of Galen and Lacey’s friends –Rafe and Courtney- who seem to be heading for a tumultuous and interesting storyline. There appears to be a power struggle with some BDSM play in the future.

Down the Aisle is a novella with a little bit of romance; a little bit of sensual and steamy sex; a little bit of humor and a whole lot of love. You will feel for Lacey and Galen as they struggle with some issues that many couples face in their relationship and in the end, perhaps there is happiness around the corner.

***************************

REVIEW:   DOWN AND DIRTY is the second storyline in Christine Bell’s contemporary series Dare Me. This storyline focuses on Cat Thomas (Galen Thomas -our hero from Down for the Count sister) and his best friend Shane Decker.

Like Down for the Count, our couple have a previous history-one that started as teens but never proceeded any further. When Galen left for college he asked his best friend Shane to look after and protect his younger sister Mary Catherine, but little did Galen know that Cat and Shane had feelings for each other. And like most teens neither one was willing to act on their emotions. Shane became the over protective big brother-one that refused to allow Cat to have fun or stray. And Cat thought that Shane’s over bearing attitude was a sign that he hated her from the start. Only Shane has wanted Lacey for a very long time.

The relationship between Cat and Shane reconnected on a chance meeting years later when Shane attended Galen’s final professional boxing match. Without a place to stay, Cat reluctantly offered her hotel room, secretly hoping that the feelings she once felt for Shane no longer mattered. But to her surprise she had difficulty separating her emotions about the man with who vowed his protection many years before. As the storyline progressed Cat continued to waiver with regards to her feelings for Shane fearing that to accept his protection meant she accepted defeat and in doing so pushed the one many away who mattered most. By accepting a dare, Cat placed herself in a position to watch as Shane was forced into seeing other women.

Cat was a difficult character to like. She had become a successful fashion designer with her own line and feared losing her identity to a man-any many-especially a man who had sworn his protection. She wanted Shane; she knew she had lost her heart to the man; but she refused to give into the idea that loving the man would make her a better person. Cat’s identity was wrapped up in her business and she didn’t want to lose herself in a man like she believed happened to another. She pulled Shane in and then pushed in out-several times. And with one final push she may have pushed Shane away forever.

DOWN AND DIRTY is another storyline with a hero who knows what he wants and a heroine who waffles at every stage of the story. There is some angst as Cat pushes one too many times and your heart will break when Shane realizes that Cat has yet to grow up. But in true contemporary romance fashion, our couple will have their HEA but it takes a virtual stranger to show Cat that to accept love doesn’t mean you give up.

****************************

Review: DOWN FOR THE COUNT is the first storyline in Christine Bell’s new contemporary romance series Dare Me. This is Lacey and Galen’s story.

What do you do when you find your husband of two hours ‘doing it’ with your friend and bridesmaid in the storage closet at your wedding reception? Well if you are Lacey Garrity, you have your BFF handle things at the hall while your teen ‘crush’ whisks you away on his motorcycle to the family cottage for an evening of drinking and revelation. But when Lacey and Galen wake up in Puerto Rico, on what was supposed to be Lacey’s honeymoon, Galen is determined to help Lacey discover her inner vixen. Slightly tight laced and stoic, Lacey was never one to push the envelope, but with Galen by her side, Lacey soon learned to let go of her pent up years of frustration and family rule.

Lacey ‘s marriage can only be described as a merger. Hoping to merge two high profile legal firms, Lacey’s mother had made it her life’s ambition to ensure the man to whom Lacey would marry was of good breeding and pedigree. And to Lacey’s astonishment, her mother (aka The Admiral) refused to accept anything less than perfection. But when Lacey’s mother pointed out that even her marriage wasn’t all roses and candy, Lacey wondered if she had made the wrong decision. Hoping to give Lacey time to think, Galen leaves only to discover that Lacey is the only woman who can mend his broken heart.

The relationship between Lacey and Galen is both romantic and hot. Lacey knew Galen to be the popular boxer with women clamoring for his attention, and Galen only wanted one thing permanent in his life-Lacey. We watch as Galen gets Lacey to let go of the past and her inhibitions to discover the real woman hidden just below the ‘good girl’ façade. Galen wanted to show Lacey a good time and prove that he is the man for her.

I liked that Lacey didn’t whine about her the circumstances in her life and she was a woman willing to try something different to prove (to herself) that she was worthy of love from the right man but she did have some emotional baggage with self-esteem issues brought on by a tyrannical mother who refused to allow Lacey her independence. In this, Lacey was a means to an end for a business transaction and nothing else. And Galen with his tough exterior was the perfect man to bring Lacey’s hidden sexual kitten to the surface and allow her to discover what it was in life she really wanted-and it was Galen.

DOWN FOR THE COUNT is a fast paced, sweet storyline of betrayal, romance, fun and finding yourself in the one person you had always dreamed would one day be yours. There were a few moments where Lacey steps outside of the box and jumps into ‘vixen’ mode too fast, but overall the storyline was a fun read with the usual cast well-meaning friends, interfering mothers and the realization that your heart and soul belong to the one person who that can make you laugh and cry at the same time. There was nothing earth shattering or thought provoking in the premise, but a storyline with a little bit of heartbreak, a little bit of sex and a whole lot of romance between two people who have probably loved each other for a lifetime.
