The Daughters of the Glen/The Warrior Series – A Poem

THE DAUGHTERS OF THE GLEN/THE WARRIOR SERIES- A Poem based on the novels by Melissa Mayhue

I wrote this poem about one year ago but have since added a few more stanzas as Melissa Mayhue has written her WARRIOR series.

THE DAUGHTERS OF THE GLEN and THE WARRIOR SERIES

Melissa Mayhue dreamed a book
The Fae had filled her thoughts.
Of scattered worlds, from then and now,
A world, she blessed with Scots.

Connor was the first to seek,
An otherworldly trek.
The maiden Cate, was his to meet,
A love he’d not forget.

Sarah loved the written word,
To Scotland she was bound.
But Ian captured Sarah’s heart,
Their love, at long last, found.

Ramos gathered thoughts of good,
But Reynard tempted fate.
Mairi knew she found a love,
With Ramos, as her mate.

Caden searched, his brother gone,
The laird was missing too.
The Fae had plans for Ellie now,
For Caden-love renewed.

Jesse knew, his one true love,
Was Fae, so clean and pure.
And Destiny was by his side,
With hope, to reassure.

Robert’s life was waning fast,
A cure he needed now.
His guilt did cause, a shattered sense,
Of time, a broken vow.

Isa grew, so brave and strong,
Her power was foretold.
And Robert feared, he’d lost his chance,
But love had taken hold.

Andrew saved a maiden Fae,
Her secrets, she did hide.
But Leah craved his gentle touch,
She travelled by his side.

Abby wished for just one thing,
A soul mate, she would love.
But Colin’s cursed, to never know,
His woman’s gentle touch.

The Highlander’s of Scotland yore,
The women and the men.
Have found their lives, their love, their souls,
In The Daughter’s of the Glen.

And now the stories build once more,
The heroes from the Glen.
Of Scottish lass, and passing times,
Of Warriors, Fae and men.

Malcolm had a brother whom,
Desired death, revenge.
But Dani aided Malcolm’s cause,
His life she would avenge.

Eric never knew the truth,
When he broke a woman’s heart.
But a life alone without her love,
Meant Jeanne would live apart.

Chase had dreamt of long ago,
A beauty caught his eye.
And Christiana thought she found,
The stars, the moon, the sky.

The Warriors will meet once more,
When Torquil fights for power.
The gathered group, defend their lives,
Their loves with truth and honor.

Melissa writes a tale of love
That spans the years and miles.
Of Scottish Glens, and Fairy dreams,
Of kisses, sighs and smiles.

Highlander’s Curse

“Highlander’s Curse” is the latest book of Melissa Mayhue’s Daughters of the Glen series.  The 9th book is expected to be released May 1, 2012. Once again I loved this book.

Abigail Porter, is studying to become an archaeologist and is excited to have been selected to spend three months at a real dig in Scotland. Abby wishes for “The One”,  the one man who is perfect for her…her soul mate. Unknown to Abby, she is a descendant of the Fae, so the next morning Abby wakes up with a very strange and very naked man in her bed.

Colin MacAlister, whom we have met in previous books, lives is Scotland in the year of 1296. Colin, who has contempt for the Fae,  cares about nothing but the fate of Scotland during the war.  He goes to see a famous seer, and due to his bad temperament, ends up insulting the faerie queen herself. When he mentions that he does not want or need love he is cursed to feel the pain of soul mates who were torn apart and live in anguish and pain until they are reunited with their other half. Colin is now able to feel this pain and see how each soul was torn and how two will fit together. Only til he finds his own soul mate, will the curse be lifted.

Colin turned out to be another excellent hero, though he was stubborn as hell, as far as ignoring everyone not to change history, as he wanted to change the war, since he was able to go to the future and see what happens.  No matter who tried to convince him, Pol, Rosalyn, Abby, nothing could change Colin, except when he realized that Abby was indeed his soul mate, and when her life was in danger, he needed to put her first.

It was an excellent story, starting with him going to the future.  It was funny early on, and nice to see Mairi, Ramos and the others.  Of course the villain Flynn comes back into this story. His going back in time with them was a nice add on.

I enjoyed Ellie trying to explain about the Fae’s and what happened, seeing Rosalyn again was cool.  The trek to find Dair and Simeon was very good, as this is where both Abby and Colin confirm their love, as she knew he was the one.  He after he lost his power, knew she was his soul mate.   Abby getting kidnapped, and ending up with Dair and Simeon was good, but also funny when they have her swear not to tell Colin what they had to do to find the knife, or tape her up.  Mayhue adding a touch of humor was perfect. Flynn getting killed was good, at least another one gone.

I loved the end seeing Drew & Leah, when Leah had to save Abby.  I was surprised that Colin wanted to go back to the future with Abby.  The emotional ending where Drew offered to tell Rosalyn Colin’s goodbyes, and Leah telling Abby to tell Destiny she is happy and pregnant.  Cool

One thing though.  Something has changed in the last two books for Mayhue.  Now two times, she doesn’t have an epilogue, she doesn’t show them with the family.  I miss that part.   With the upcoming Warrior’s Redemption a spinoff, I hope Melissa comes out soon with a new Daughters of the Glen book.

Healing the Highlander Review

Healing the Highlander Review

“Healing the Highlander” is Melissa Mayhue’s 7th book in her Daughters of the Glen series.   Once again Mayhue has done another great story, with a great couple.   As I was not crazy about Leah in the previous books, that totally changed when she left McQuarrie Keep, to help save her ‘grandparents’.  Then she met Drew and I really began to like Leah.  They certainly made great soul mates.

The story begins with Drew Macalister living with excruciating pain caused by an old wound, but when he rescues Leah Noble McQuarrie, he has no idea how much his life is about to change. Leah hates anything Fae, after being tortured by the Naudians to do their bidding, as she is a descendant of the Fae, and has the power to heal.  Leah denies her heritage and her magical healing abilities, but is determined to find a way to help her grandfather who is being held captive.

It was a very good story, different, but the same concept.  They meet accidentally, they fall in love, they fight the attraction, adventure & danger, they get saved and live happily ever after. Lol   I did enjoy it.

The storyline with Moreland was good, he knew she was the MacQuarrie girl he was looking for. Getting to see Sallie, Ran and family was nice.  Going back to Dun Ard was great, though we didn’t see Colin until the end.  Of course he is the next book, and he looks like he has the most power of any male Highlander.

At times it was frustrating that though they were very much in love, neither would admit it, and Drew, not knowing what was involved, just wanted to use her to heal him.   But of course, he really did love her.  Though I understood why Blane would not offer to send help for her grandparents, what would they have expected from her.  Even though she was foolish to expect old Moreland to bargain with her, she only thought of the family who took care of her and whom she loved.   Nice to see Sim and Dair, though we did not get too much.

As much as I enjoyed the book, and the pairing of Leah and Drew, I was disappointed that we did not get to see all the Scotland family at the end, like Mayhue has done with most of her books.  We did get to see Drew become laird of MacQuarrie, and that is why things changed when Robbie went back to Scotland and saw the castle well taken care of, which had been different when he had checked years earlier. All because Drew and Leah had control and that altered things.  I had hoped we would see Mairi find out what happened to Leah, so she could tell Destiny.  Maybe in the next book.

Watch out for a future Highlander books for Peter Moreland, as he redeemed himself at the end, as well as for both Dair and Sim.  Surprised she did Malcolm McDowalyt in her next book, Warrior’s Redemption.  However, we have been told that Redemption is spinoff series from Daughters.  On to Highlander’s Curse.

A Highlander’s Homecoming

“A Highlander’s Homecoming” is the 6th book of Daughters of the Glen series by Melissa Mayhue. Just when you think you read the best book previously, here comes one that beats it or comes damn close.

At the end of the last book, Robert volunteered to escort Leah, Destiny’s sister, who had been so torturously treated by Faeries, back in time so she cannot be located by those evil-doers again. The book picks up immediately with the plan for Robert to land at his home near the time he left ten years before, Robert ends up twenty years later, and finds the daughter of his friend is no longer a young child.

I loved Robbie and Isa.  Their story was great, and the addition of Jaime was excellent.

I have come to admire Melissa Mayhue and her ability to create such wonderful
soul-mates, as well as the children she brings into the stories.  I loved the part where Rosie has to help Cate and Mairi send Robert and Leah to the past.

Right from the start I adored Isabella, her love of Jaime, and how she would dress down to meet her family.  When she met Robert, and started their trek back to her cabin, they both immediately began their attraction to one another. Strange….one of the best moments was when she was thinking about him and found her name for him  “Robbie”.  For there on in, I only thought of him as Robbie.  They made a great couple, in so many ways.

But…most of the times there is always a but. lol  Not lately in any of the Mayhue books I have read, but I thought in this book, despite my love for Robbie and Isa, I did not like some of the characters.  I hated the parts with Roland, & Agneys, nothing about those parts interested me, other then knowing he was a despicable character. Not even a good villain.  I did not like McDowalyt early on, but I liked him at the end.  He was better then, letting Isa go with Robert and Jaime, without even telling them he was doing so, and his brother Patrick seemed good. I know that in the next book, Warriors Redemption, Malcom McDowalyt will be the lead, so we shall see.

But aside from that I loved everything about the story involving Robbie, Isa and Jaime.   When the Tinklers ended up helping them, when Leah finally accepted what she was, the scene with her healing Jaime was very strong (especially seeing her take the scars and pain), Robert’s mother hearing the truth.  Great ending, with them and with Isa helping send Robbie back to the future, and Jaime along with them.

I loved once again seeing them all together at the end.  Mayhue knows how to end a book, bringing the characters that are family and friends together in a happy ending.  It is such a pleasure for us to get see how they interact with one another, their acceptance of Isa and Jaime and how well they fit in.

On to Healing a Highlander, and Leah.  I did like her better at the end of this book, so I look forward to her with Andrew.

A Highlanders Destiny

“A Highlanders Destiny” is the 5th book of Melissa Mayhue’s wonderful Daughters of the Glen series.

Destiny Noble has been searching for her missing sister for a while now, with nothing to guide her but the visions that appear in her dreams. Those visions led her work as a gypsy-clad fortune teller at a Renaissance fair. There she would meet the man dressed in black who would help her find and rescue her sister.

Jesse Coryell, whom we met in the first book, as Cate brother, has decided he wanted a change in his life, and plans to become a Guardian for the Fae and move to Scotland…just as he is about to tell his family, he finds a letter addressed to his father’s security firm requesting their help in locating a missing girl. He becomes intrigued, having strange feelings to investigate this.  Jesse goes to meet Destiny and he will become the man in black that she meets.

Destiny refuses to believe that her sister is dead. What she doesn’t know or could ever have expected was that she and her sister are both part Fae as well and Leah was kidnapped by a sinister Fae that wants her for her blood. And so begins Jesse and Destiny’s hunt for Leah.

I knew going in that I was looking forward to reading about Jesse, and this book did not disappoint.  I loved Jesse, and now I think I love him the same if not more then Ramos.  Mayhue continues to surprise me with how she builds her couples, and how well she does it and ties them to either current day or the old Scotland families.  Each book, she outdoes herself.   At first when we meet Destiny, she seemed ok, but a bit afraid, not sure of herself, her visions were a little confusing at first; all probably because she was using the gypsy disguise.  But as the story began to unfold, and she and Jesse came together, you could see they would become an awesome couple.

The story itself was great, exciting all the way through.  Watching Jesse and Des fall in love was great, and she got a lot stronger as she came closer to finding her sister.  I enjoyed the secondary characters, such as Robert and meeting Devlin. Leah was ok, but even though it was probably warranted, her fear of Fae’s, even those trying to help her was a bit annoying.  Even the villains were good, from Adira, to Flynn, to Dermond (hopefully he is dead), and then at the end, the return of Reynard.  Ugh we have him to look forward to.

As I said it was a great story, kept you interested all the way through, to the much deserved ending of Jesse and Des being soul mates.  But the best part, was the end.  Seeing all of them back together was awesome.  So Robert goes back to his time, and I am sure one of the future books we will be Leah finding her own soul mate.  My guess is that neither Robert nor Leah will ever come back to the present.  A huge downer for Destiny, but she has Jesse.

Melissa Mayhue is an excellent writer, and her books just keep on getting better.  I look forward to A Highlanders Homecoming, which I know will be Robert’s story.

A Highlander of Her Own

“A Highlander of her Own” is the 4th book in the Daughters of the Glen series by Melissa Mayhue.  Once again, as it seems be with Melissa Mayhue, I really enjoyed this book.  The only thing missing out of this book was we didn’t get to see the others in the present time.   But nevertheless, it was great to spend more time with Rosalyn and her family.  Great to see Sallie again, having her 4th child. Lol  too bad though, Sallie would have been a great character for the future.  But I am sure she will continue to be part of future stories, especially those spent in Scotland.

A Highlander of her Own” begins in Texas present present time with Ellie Denton, as her world has spiraled out of control. She has a strange new birthmark, animals talking to her, and her mother’s ex-husband laying claim to the family ranch that she wanted for herself.  But Ellie doesn’t that the birthmark is her connection to her Faerie ancestors, which Pol gave to the other women, upon Mairi’s request. Life is about to change for Ellie.

At the same time back in Scotland, 1304, Caden MacAlister is having his own problems, with his brother held for ransom, the laird missing,  he sees a mysterious woman in his stables.  Knowing the history of his family and the Fae, Caden thinks Ellie was sent by the Fae for one of his brothers, as he has no desire to be involved with anything sent by the Fae.

This book was different then the others.  Ellie Denton  turns out to be a great heroine.  I really enjoyed everything about Ellie.  Not so much when she was in Texas, but definitely when she traveled to the past to Scotland and the MacKiernan’s.  I loved her with Caden, but at times he would annoy me, being so determined to push Ellie to his brothers.  Loved the way she interacted so well with everyone, even the help (anna).  Another reason this book was so different, yet very enjoyable, was Ellie’s ability to converse with animals.  I enjoyed and laughed at times with her conversations with Missy and Baby.  However, what kinds of names for dogs are Missy and Baby?…cmon.  lol  Missy maybe, but Baby?  Baby was a big dog, he went to rescue Caden, then went back to Ellie for help.  He most certainly wasn’t a baby. Lol  ok enough of that.

The book was well written and kept your interest throughout.  The betrayals, rescues of Colin, Blane and introducing new characters, such as Dair and Simeon. I really liked Dair from the start, not so his sister and brother. Simeon we shall see. I loved the way Sallie gave her knives to Ellie to use, and how she eventually did use them.  But Caden stubbornness, Ellie’s confusion of what she thought would happen, was a bit annoying (not too much), as it finally took Rosalyn to take matters into her own hands.  Great ending, great plan by Rosalyn to get everyone united in helping to force Caden and Ellie together finally.  I do have to say, I wasn’t totally happy about the ending. I understand for Ellie’s sake, they needed closure, some kind of revenge for Ray Stanton.  But to end the book that way, I would have preferred more like the first three books.

I enjoyed this book.  It was an easy read, a fun read and this series does have great romantic couples or should we say…soul mates. I fully understand why everyone who reads this series loves it.  This is perfect escapism  Next I start A Highlander Destiny, which I know is Jesse’s book.

Soul of a Highlander

“Soul of the Highlander is the 3rd book in Melissa Mayhue’s Daughters of the Glen series.  I really enjoyed this book.  .

Mairi MacKiernan’s life already changed dramatically when she was saved from death and pulled forward in time with her brother, Connor. She’s adjusted to modern life, but she has a strong need to fix what happen in the past, and to save her cousin Marsali.  Mairi confronts Pol and gains permission to travel back to the past to right a wrong. Mairi needs to get past her almost rape and murder that occurred before she was brought to the future, she needs to get back her spirit and fire

Ramos Servans, now a Fae Guardian, wants to repair the damage done by his evil father, Reynard. He is given the task to go back in time to help rescue or assist Mairi in her quest. Ramos needs to get past the things he did for his father, not know that he was a bad guy.  He’s a good man, and everyone but him sees that.

Both Ramos and Mairi were a great couple.  As much as I liked Connor and Ian from the first two books, I knew once I found out this book belonged to Ramos, that I would love him the best. I really enjoyed him in Highland Guardian, with his friendship to Sarah.  But totally fell in love with him in ‘Soul of a Highlander’. I was surprised that Mairi turned out to be such a great heroine.

This book was excellent throughout, with very little boring moments.  Very exciting all through, and Reynard Servans made a very good villain, even if I dislike him so much.  What I loved mostly about the book, was meeting Rosalyn again, and her family.  At first I couldn’t take Marsali, but ended up really liking Sallie.  lol  She was one tough young girl at the end.  I would have loved to see a storyline for her, but I doubt that will happen, as she ends up married to Ran.

The parts with Pol, I love, as I really like him, and hope he continues to be part of the other stories.   It was also great at the end to see the children, Will and Rose again; as well as seeing Cate, Connor, Ian, Sarah.  Mayhue continues to make you fall in love with her couples, as she did once again with Ramos and Mairi.  She also has very good with creating excellent secondary characters, and my guess is many of those will be future books, therefore allowing us to go back and forth in time, with Rosalyn’s family and the current time families (Cate/Connor, Ramos/Mairi, Ian/Sarah) or in the far future books (will this series end?) for Will and Rose.

Loved this book, very relaxing and enjoyable read.  However, that being said, I was somewhat disturbed with some points of the end. I love Dallyn, are they trying to tell us he is Wyn Servans?  Though Wyn wasn’t totally bad, I can’t see him being Dallyn, since how would he have been able to go to the realm, which isn’t probable, as he was Naudian.  And the mystery that Pol wants to discuss with Dallyn about the mistake of his with Mairi (mortal women having fae power).  Oh well, we shall see.  Next is Highlander of her Own.

Highland Guardian

“Highland Guardian, the second book of Melissa Mayhue’s Daughters of the Glen series.  Right up front, I noticed that Mayhue’s writing changes a lot in this book. As much as I loved Connor and Cate in Thirty Nights with a Highland Husband, this book was better in many ways. Bringing in Dallyn, the Fae general, was a nice move, and he was funny, especially with incorrect slangs, or even eating chocolate. We also get to meet the powerful Pol, who created the original curse.

Mayhue throughout the book had a number of cute or funny comments. Very nicely done. The added mystery of the Nuadians made for an excellent storyline.

”Highland Guardian” introduces us to Sarah Douglas, who is an author in the midst of being in a writers block.  She decides to spend a few months in Scotland to see if it will help her start writing again.  There is also something pulling her to go to Scotland, especially to a special cottage.

Ian McCullough, is Fae guardian, who is a 600 years old. Ian, who is half fae and half human, works for Dallyn, the Fae general.  Ian’s job is to protect the gateway between the human and fae worlds from the evil Fairies – the Nuadians.

Ian meets Sarah, who is renting his cottage, which is very close to the gateway that Ian guards.  The danger is that Sarah’s presence presents a risk to Ian and his job. She’s a descendant of the Fae as well unbeknownst to her, and as a female descendant she can see the gate. Since Sarah knows nothing of her ancestors, she could be in danger from the Nuadians, who would want her to lead them to the gate.

I loved Ian and Sarah’s romance. Loved the fact that Sarah was not a young girl in her 20’s, having an older heroine at 38 was nice and she didn’t have to worry, since he was 600 years older then her. lol  I also loved Ramos, and was glad he was saved at the end. I enjoyed the friendship he developed with Sarah. He too becomes one of those (Robert, Jesse) who I would like to see have stories told.

The villain to me was Brad, he was one of the worst kind of villains (more of a creep), though Reynard was by far the most evil. But I so wanted Ian to punch out Brad, and would have been happy if he killed him at the end. His treatment of Sarah, in front of all those people was pathetic. The golf ball in his back was funny.

The children, Will and Rose, were exceptional and fun.  Mayhue does well with creating excellent secondary characters. The book was both well-written and exciting.  The story pulls you in and keeps you turning the pages until the exciting end. I enjoyed Sarah utilizing her power to kill Reynard. Bringing in Pol to Dallyn and Darnee at the end, opens this up in different directions with the soulmates, healers, etc.  Mayhue also does very well with her sex scenes, which are steamy, but not over the top.

Hopefully we get to see some more of these fabulous characters. Next up will be “Soul of the Highlander”, which I am happy to say belongs to Ramos and Mairi.
