Description:
When a fortieth birthday celebration leads to a ghostly visitor, four friends find themselves navigating surprising mysteries and spiritual hijinks, in this clever debut from Melissa Holtz.

Alyssa Mann isn’t adventurous, not since her husband died and she found herself the single mom of a teenage daughter. But there’s no way to avoid celebrating the big 4-0, so when her best friends drag her out for drinks and a tarot reading, she throws caution to the wind and decides to see what the spirits have to say. It’s all fun and games, until she wakes up the next morning with a wicked hangover—and a ghost perched on the edge of her bed.

Sheer panic sends her running to get help from Nick West, the (very attractive) detective who lives next door. When he finds no one inside, Alyssa has to accept that she really did see a ghost. As the dearly departed keep appearing, Alyssa and her friends do their best to learn how to control her newfound power. Trading insults with ghosts, tracking down family heirlooms, and getting closer to the skeptical but helpful Nick is more fun than Alyssa imagined. But when looking into one ghost’s past reveals unexpected—and unwelcome—facts about Alyssa’s late husband’s death, she discovers she just may be in over her head.

Review:

An Enchanting Case of Spirits by Melissa Holtz is an enchanting debut with a mystery and romantic story. We meet Alyssa Mann, our heroine, who has just turn 40, with a teenage daughter; and still grieves over the accidental death of her husband.  Her two best friends (Lanie and Nina) drag her out for drinks, and they end up visiting a psychic medium for fun. They are all shocked when a ghostly event occurs, connecting Alyssa and the medium, Collette. The following morning, Alyssa wakes up with a hangover and a ghost sitting on the edge of her bed. At first, she is scared and upset, but she quickly realizes that whatever happened the night before, she now has the ability to see and talk to ghosts.

Alyssa realizes she now can see ghosts, who come to her to help them move on; and in a short time, she knows that the ghosts are in limbo and need help to cross over to the other side.  So, Lanie and Nina, as well as Collette work together with Alyssa to solve why the ghosts cannot move on. With the first ghost still hanging around, two more ghosts will eventually appear; especially with ladies working hard to discover how the three deaths (which could include her husband’s accident) are connected.

Alyssa tries to explain to her neighbor, Nick West, who is a detective (and a hunk), about some clues the ladies have discovered, with help from the ghosts.   Nick, who is attracted to Alyssa, refuses to listen to her suggestions, as he doesn’t believe that she knows something.   But after he gets some facts about those deaths, Nick will slowly begin his own investigations, which will lead him to realize that she does see the dead.  Nick will get his partner to research the deaths of four people locally, which will include the mayor.

What follows is Alyssa, Collette and even Lanie/Nina have a new purpose in their lives, in helping those to move on.  Alyssa and Collette learn to control their power, and their interactions with ghosts were lots of fun; with lots of witty banter with the mischievous spirits. There was a number of intriguing twists and turns, which will also have her discover the truths that also include her husband’s death. To say too much more, would ruin the fun, which you need to read.

An Enchanting Case of Spirits was a fun, delightful, humorous, emotional mystery, with a paranormal element. I also enjoyed the romantic slow build relationship between Alyssa and Nick.  I loved her friends, Lanie, Nina and Collette.  An Enchanting Case of Spirits was so very well written by Melissa Holt.  I really enjoyed reading this book, as it was fun, easy to read and entertaining.

Painfully aware of being different, Mia Westbrook has always kept herself apart from others. Yet her new demon life comes with strings attached, namely one scarred and broodingly seductive knight who storms into her world—and her heart—and may just be her perfect match.

But a formidable evil has been watching, and is determined to tear them apart. They want Zenon back in Hell, with them, where he belongs…

•••••••••

REVIEW: KNIGHT’S SALVATION is the second instalment in Sherilee Gray’s contemporary, adult KNIGHTS OF HELL erotic, paranormal romance series focusing on a group of demon hunters known as the Knights of Hell, warriors whose birth was ordained by the mating of angels and demons. These ‘Knights’ hunt the demons who make life a living h*ll on earth for everyone involved. This is demon hunter Zenon, and demi-demon Mia Westbrook’s story line. KNIGHT’S SALVATION can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

WARNING: KNIGHT’S SALVATION may contain triggers for more sensitive readers due to the nature of the story line content.

Told from several third person points of view including Zenon and Mia KNIGHT’S SALVATION follows demon hunter Zenon as he struggles with his attraction to demi-demon Mia Westbrook. Mia knows she is a half-human, half-demon hybrid; and with it comes immense power that is oft-times unstable, without the ability to control. Knowing she is expected to live and train with the Knights of Hell, Mia is shocked when her attraction to demon hunter Zenon causes all kinds of problems for our story line hero. What ensues is the acrimonious relationship between Mia and Zenon, and the potential fall-out as Zenon’s time on earth has an end date when Zenon is forced back into hell.

Zenon is unlike the other hunters. Our hero is a hell-born demon hunter; more demon than angel, and thusly his life is all about chaos, power and control. Broken and scarred, Zenon struggles with his attraction to Mia, a woman he knows to be his fated mate. With needs beyond that which he can control, Zenon is willing to sacrifice himself to save the woman with whom he is falling in love. Mia Westbrook has always known she is the product of a human and demon mating but her powers are growing beyond that which she is able to control, powers that attract the pure-bred demons. Hoping to live a life as normal as possible, Mia battles her attraction to, and hatred for the man that continues to break her heart.

The relationship between Zenon and Mia is contemptuous at best. Zenon refuses to accept Mia as his mate but he is unwilling to let go knowing his beast is but a heartbeat from breaking free and destroying it all. The push and pull, back and forth, up and down of Zenon’s emotions is overwhelming and constant. Ashamed and humiliated about his life and what he must endure, Zenon continues to push Mia at every encounter. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including the reappearance of Lazarus and Eve (Knight’s Redemption #1), Knights of Hell leader Chaos, James, Gunner, Kryos and his mate Meredith, and Rocco; as well as Silas-the angel who trains and watches over the Knights. The requisite evil has many faces.

KNIGHT’S SALVATION is a story of heartbreak, endurance, struggle and pain. The premise is engaging, emotional and disturbing; the characters are colorful, dynamic and dangerous; the romance is hot and heavy. KNIGHT’S SALVATION is also a familiar story line in that the male lead, and the struggles he has had to, and continues to endure are intensely recognizable and similar to another author’s well-known, broken, vampire warrior hero. From the name similarities (Z). same physical attributes and manifestations, tattoos and scars, to the background history and suffering, Zenon’s resemblance to said broken vampire are too numerous to ignore.

REVIEW: KNIGHT’S REDEMPTION is the first instalment in Sherilee Gray’s contemporary, adult KNIGHTS OF HELL paranormal, romance series focusing on a group of demon hunters. This is immortal demon hunter Lazarus, and bookstore owner Eve Taylor’s story line.

SOME BACKGROUND: The Knight’s of Hell are a group of demon hunters whose birth was ordained by the mating of angels and demons. These ‘Knights’ hunt the demons who make life a living h*ll on earth for everyone involved.

Told from several third person perspectives including Lazarus and Eve, KNIGHT’S REDEMPTION follows the building relationship between destined mates- immortal demon hunter Lazarus, and bookstore owner Eve Taylor. Once upon a time Lazarus was best friends with fellow demon hunters Tobias and Scarlet but a grave error in judgement created a fractured line between brothers leaving Lazarus struggling to accept that which he could not prevent. With the approach of the equinox, the portal to hell would open calling the demons to join in the fight but a ‘new’ demi-demon was about to come into her powers, and Lazarus knew the woman was his fated mate. What ensues is the developing relationship between Lazarus and Eve, and the fall-out as Eve’s powers are a beacon to demon-kind including the most powerful male in Hell-Diemos.

Lazarus believes himself a danger to his mate and thusly refuses to accept their fate. As the equinox nears Lazarus’ demon grows in power and the only balm to soothe the beast is the taking of his mate. Eve Taylor had no idea about the supernatural world in which she lived but a recent spate of headaches and a new-found ability to hear people’s thoughts finds our heroine accepting the inevitable but acceptance isn’t easy when the man that calls to her heart refuses to acknowledge their fate.

Meanwhile, a former demon hunter seeks revenge for the death of his mate, a death he blames on our story line hero. Believing Lazarus betrayed their friendship, said demon is determined to destroy Lazarus’ fated mate.

The relationship between Lazarus and Eve is one of fate, circumstance and immediate attraction but Lazarus refuses to accept Eve believing himself unworthy of love. Unable to remain away from Eve for any extended period, Lazarus becomes Eve’s personal protector knowing it is only a matter of time before they become one. The $ex scenes are intimate and intense.

We are introduced to a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Lazarus’ fellow demon hunting warriors: Tobias, James, Chaos, Gunner, Kryos and his mate Meredith, Rocco and Zenon; a variety of demons, angels and demi-demons; and Eve’s former boyfriend Eric.

KNIGHT’S REDEMPTION is a story of friendship, family, betrayal and revenge; angels and demons. The premise is captivating; the romance struggles in the face of grief and guilt; the characters are enchanting and colorful. KNIGHT’S REDEMPTION is an intriguing take on the age-old war between good and evil. Sherilee Gray invites the reader into an edgy and dramatic story of vengeance and loss.

One touch from her and he’d lost focus again.
This wasn’t how this was supposed to happen. He’d been with her for less than an hour and already he was struggling to keep his shit together and had put her in danger. As tempting as she was, he had to remain fixed on his original path. He couldn’t allow this force between them to win. Because this wasn’t for him. He couldn’t keep her.
“We have to leave,” he said before putting even more space between them. Keeping his head straight was getting more and more difficult around Eve. He needed to conduct the rest of this mission as he always did—with cold efficiency.
She nodded and went back to biting her damn bottom lip.
He tore his eyes from her, not sure how to handle this, any of it. How was he going to explain what she was to him? How did you tell someone they were the key to your salvation, your only hope? That your future and that of the free world depended on her leaving everything she’d ever known and accepting him as her mate.
A mate who would leave as soon as he’d taken what he wanted.
A mate who could never love her.
That it was for the best because he would never, not in a million years, be worthy of her.
Eve would not be another sacrifice to this war. And that’s what would happen if he kept her. If he allowed her to get close.
People who got close to him suffered for it. They got hurt.
He’d do whatever it took to prevent that from happening again.
He glanced over at her. Keeping his shit tight wasn’t going to be easy. Besides having to deal with his overwhelming physical attraction to her, he feared his possession was moving at a faster rate. Time was almost up, and he had to find a way to explain the reason he’d come for her without sending her running.
What if she refuses you?
He couldn’t think about that now. Getting her to safety had to be his number one priority. The shadows had crept in earlier, the darkness trying to take another piece of his soul. Eve had seen it, the difference in his eyes as he fought to restrain his demon. He just had to hold off for a bit longer.
And hope like hell she’d accept him.

REVIEW: Long ago, Demons and Lycans have lived in harmony… Until one kind, humans, decided to change that. For the Lycans, it is to dominate or be dominated. And some have become ruthless, because of their nature that their numbers have suspiciously climbed. To control the growth of the Lycan population; and for other personal reasons, a mad scientist, General Jackson Wade, created an almost indestructible human army…the Alexi soldiers.

As a rule, Alexi soldiers are forbidden to pursue any of their personal vengeance. But Ayden isn’t just any other Alexi soldier. She is General Wade’s first and prized immortal creation to succeed. In addition, he alters the Alexi’s memories so they only remember the last few minutes of their attack. A fuel when it comes to combats with the Lycans. That memory alone and the mentality that she does not belong to no one, has made her decide to leave the compound and to seek revenge. Partnering up with the Sons of Wrath, demon warriors of vengeance, they have managed to eliminate a significant number of Lycans in the Detroit city. Still, something did not seem right…

Kane Walker, a Director for the Children’s Cancer Institute, has only days before he becomes one of Ayden’s most hated enemy. But with any physical contact with Ayden, images will flash in her mind. A memory? Hers, or the Lycan who had killed her? She does not know, and she’s determined to find out; promising his death in the end before his final transformation. However, going through with this new mission might mean a disaster to the rest of her Alexi life. So is she ready to find out the truth? And what will she do to Kane as he brings forth warm sensual feelings that are foreign yet pleasant to her?

SOUL AVENGED is the first novel of Keri Lakes new series the Sons of Wrath. As was stated above, Wrath demons are warriors of vengeance, they are the sons of the demon Prince, Wrath. They are responsible to punish those who have wronged on earth. Furthermore, they don’t make deals, rather they make contracts. That was how Ayden happened to be under their protection and has become her partners when seeking out to eradicate the Lycans.

This novel contains some gruesome scenes as are shown in horror films. As detailed as it was, the scene did not bother me…but for a reader with a weak stomach, might be a different story. This was an exciting and entertaining read. Although it’s Ayden’s and Kane’s story, meeting the sons of Wrath (Gavin, Logan, Calix, Zeke and his twin brother Zayne) makes it a quintuple excitement because they must find their Tazschla (mate) or suffer the Sovidon where it forces them to choose a mate to ensure the continuation of their species.

Archangel of Mercy by Christina Ashcroft-a review

ARCHANGEL OF MERCY by Christina Ashcroft-a review

Archangel of Mercy

ABOUT THE BOOK: Released December 2012

When Aurora Robinson attempts to open a rift between dimensions to embrace her true heritage, an arrogant Archangel is the only one who can save her from the jaws of hell. And while she owes Gabriel her life, she’s determined not to fall at his feet-despite the desire she feels whenever they’re together.

After his wings were brutally destroyed millennia ago, Gabriel has no compassion for humans like those who ruined him and betrayed the ones he loved. But when he inexplicably finds himself defying ancient protocols to rescue a woman from a fate worse than death, he is shocked by the searing attraction he feels for a mortal.

As the ancient forces that seek to punish Aurora for her actions close in, Gabriel offers the tempting woman protection at his private sanctuary. But as they both succumb to their desires, they discover an even deeper connection-one that threatens to consume them.

ARCHANGEL OF MERCY was a finalist in the Australian Romance Readers Award for Favorite Paranormal Romance

***************

REVIEW: ARCHANGEL OF MERCY is the first storyline in Christina Ashcroft’s new series focusing on a group of angels and archangels and the lives of the people they come in contact with every day.

Like most introductory storylines, Archangel of Mercy is awash in world building and one that is very detailed and heavy in otherworldly characters such as angels, archangels, demons, Guardians, and nephilim as well as social structure, political alliances, rules and regulations to follow and, a goddess, whom we have yet to meet, and who can only be compared to Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Artemis. Archangel of Mercy introduces several potential future storyline characters including friends, frenemies and the angels who have yet to fall.

Archangel Gabriel is our hero who mysteriously finds himself in Ireland atop a beautiful woman who has accidently pulled the Fallen through a portal as she was trying to access another dimension. In doing so, Aurora Robinson has inadvertently called the ancient race of the Guardians back to earth, who claim it is their right, to capture any human who tampers with portals and tries to cross into another dimension. And so begins the storyline where Gabriel finds himself protector and lover to a woman who is strangely familiar to himself and the other archangels-only Gabriel is the last to realize why the ‘human’ woman is his to protect.

Aurora Robinson is a woman hoping to help her mother regain some sort of semblance of her sanity. Her mother is not from earth, but she has been unable to connect with her people since falling in love with a human male. But Aurora’s attempt to help her mother has caused a rift in the ‘time-space’ continuum-so to speak- and her attempts have alerted several immortal species to her existence.

As a couple, Gabriel and Aurora had an instant attraction but one that was mired in lust and sexual need. At first, Gabriel (and most of the other archangels) came off as a rude, self-centered, alpha male-one that only had sex on the brain, but as the storyline developed we learn that angels and archangels are known for their sexual prowess and Gabriel is the tortured hero (with a past) who is stunned when Aurora shuns his attempts at sexual conquest. Aurora is instantly attracted to Gabriel but his overbearing personality and sexual appetite and constant disappearances finds our heroine in the reluctant position of needing this hero to keep her alive.

Throughout the storyline, Gabriel is commissioned to track down a missing child and in this scenario, Gabriel finds the mission hits too close to home.

The book can be confusing with the back and forth of the world building. There are portals, dimension, galaxies and planets, as well as aliens and otherworldly creatures. By way of explanation, Christina Ashcroft uses Gabriel and the other angels as the vessel to explain the nuances of life as an archangel, to the reader, as well as to Aurora. Aurora will become a target and the pawn in a life and death struggle where a Fallen Angel finds the soul mate he lost years before.

ARCHANGEL OF MERCY is a well written storyline but a difficult storyline to rate. There is plenty of sexual chemistry between Aurora and Gabriel but no tension, and the romance aspect is slow to build as everything in the beginning is about need and want-Gabriel wants sex! It took awhile before Gabriel knew what it was he wanted other than getting laid several times per day. Aurora is a strong heroine, who doesn’t submit very willingly although there is one particular scene where it seemed she was completely out of character as well as out of place in the storyline. The author was trying to show a seedier side of archangel life, but it came off as cheap and unrealistic. The archangels and demons use the women in this particular storyline as nothing more than sexual toys-to be used and thrown away.

There are secondary characters whose personalities have yet to develop, but by way of introduction in this particular storyline, we know that each has a story to tell. In the beginning of the story, Gabriel wasn’t a very likeable character-his initial aggression and lack of respect for Aurora ( and most women) had me angry and at times hurt, knowing that this man/archangel was once the love of someone’s life and it was difficult for me to see him as a man capable of love. But then again, many tortured heroes have a past that forms their present-we do not know that he is hurting for a lost love. In the end, his heart and soul knew what he wanted and he wanted Aurora.

Ravyn’s Fall (Heaven and Hell #1) by Julie Blackstone-a review

Ravyn’s Fall (Heaven and Hell #1) by Julie Blackstone

RAVYN’S FALL (Heaven and Hell #1) by Julie Blackstone

RAVYN’S FALL is the first novel in Julie Blackstone’s new Young Adult series Heaven and Hell. Focusing on the battle between Angel and Demons: Nephilim, Cherubim and Seraphim- Ravyn’s Fall follows Ravyn Creed as she tries to navigate between good and evil, knowing that both want to end her life. And to complicate matters she is falling in love with the demon that made a deal with the devil. Ravyn lived for 16 years with her guardian Hank. But on this night, she would learn what it meant to truly be alone.

Ravyn is a 16 year old girl with a gift and this gift has made her a target in the world of the supernatural. The demons from hell want to protect Ravyn; the Cherubim want her destroyed; and the Nephilum want her blood. Could anything else possibly go wrong? At this point everyone will need a spreadsheet to keep track of the various types of angels and demons, on the hunt for a crossbreed child.

Enter Ezekiel (Zeke) Lancaster. Zeke is unlike anyone that Ravyn has met. And when Zeke reveals a little of the history behind the recent attacks, Ravyn is sure that she quite possibly has gone insane. As Ravyn approaches her 17th birthday a series of attacks will force Ravyn to search alone for answers, but she will unwittingly expose those closest to her to danger.

Ravyn and Zeke’s relationship is intense from the start. But unbeknownst to Ravyn, Zeke’s intentions have not always been admirable or pure. Zeke has made a deal and Ravyn is the price. But the ultimate betrayal will come from the family she never knew existed and their connection to the young man with whom she is falling in love.

We meet several of Zeke’s extended family and friends and, each will play a significant role in Ravyn’s new life. Ravyn’s guardian must answer to a few questions and Kimmy-Ravyn’s BFF is the only human who is completely aware of the angel and demons existence.

RAVYN’S FALL is a well-written, fast paced Young Adult storyline without the usual teen angst and whoa-be-gone self-pity that many young heroines endure. Julie Blackstone weaves a tale of warrior angels, loving demons and a vampire existence connected to both Heaven and Hell. The heroine is thrown head first into a world that wants her dead, and she comes out fighting for her life with her heart and soul. Ravyn’s Fall is a fascinating look at Heaven and Hell. I am looking forward to RAVYN’S GRACE later in 2012.
