REVIEW: AM I THE ONLY ONE by E.K. Blair is a stand-alone, contemporary, adult story of suspense focusing on counsellor Carly Montgomery, and university student Emma Ashford.

Told from three first person perspectives (Carly, Emma and Luca) AM I THE ONLY ONE focuses on betrayal, secrets, and issues of trust in the world of the powerful and political elite of Washington DC. University counsellor Carly Montgomery is the dutiful wife of William ‘Tripp’ Montgomery, a man whose family has political aspirations for their son but Carly has never seemed to measure up, and with it comes issues of trust and fidelity where her husband is concerned.

University student Emma Ashford is about to lose everything including her place at Georgetown College. As the sole provider and care taker for her brother Matthew, Emma struggles to meet the financial responsibilities for school, and her brother’s continuing care. Desperate for money, Emma finds herself caught in an ethical conundrum when her path crosses with counsellor Carly Montgomery. Power breeds corruption but in the case of Carly Montgomery, mistrust lends itself to a question of ethics wherein the powerful bedfellows can lead to deception and the destruction of oneself when Carly makes Emma an offer she should have refused.

AM I THE ONLY ONE is a story of suspense in a world that values power, perception, money and control. Carly Montgomery’s well-ordered life is spiralling out of control; image is everything and Carly continues to play the beautiful wife yet feeling nothing but rage and rejection inside. Emma Ashford’s life is crumbling all around her having lost her job, her scholarship, and her placement at Georgetown. Frantic for a way out, Emma accepts Carly’s offer that will quickly push Carly into a downward descent of mistrust, secrets, lies and obsession.

AM I THE ONLY ONE is a psychological thriller of suspicion and doubt; of money and power; of image, countenance, and perception. EK Blair pulls the reader into a rabbit hole of what ifs and whys; of distortion and deceit. A mind-numbing , powerful and thought provoking tale that ends on a cliff-hanger wherein the carrot that is dangled, is just out of reach.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 26, 2018

(A forbidden romance stand-alone.)

This wasn’t supposed to happen.
But it did.
This wasn’t supposed to be my life.
But it was.

I was just a typical girl, living a typical life. Nothing was out of the ordinary until tragedy threw me into a turnstile I couldn’t see my way out of. That was, until him.

I never could’ve imagined my heart falling the way it did. Hard, fast, and with unbounding beauty.

The only problem?
He was off limits.
Forbidden.

But he became my everything, and I became his, so we risked it all. It was only a matter of time until I realized that our risk came with unimaginable consequences.

My name is Camellia Hale and his is David Andrews, and this is our love story.

••••••••••••

REVIEW: SECRET LUCIDITY by E.K. Blair is a stand alone, YA/NA forbidden romance story line focusing on the taboo relationship between seventeen-year old Camellia ‘Cam’ Hale, and thirty-one year old high school English Lit. teacher/swimming coach David Andrews.

Told from first person point of view (Camellia) with a closing chapter by David SECRET LUCIDITY follows the taboo relationship between thirty-one year old high school English Lit teacher and swimming coach David Andrews, and seventeen-year old Camellia ‘Cam’ Hale. Rising swim star Cam Hale had everything until the day she lost it all to a drunk driver that destroyed her sense of well-being and took the life of her beloved father. Unable to handle the grief of loss, and the harrowing aftermath of whispered pity and self-loathing, Cam struggles to find her place in a world turned upside down leaving her to battle her demons alone. The one bright spot in her life, swimming, no longer harbors the appeal until new swim coach and English Lit teacher David Andrews becomes her beacon in the storm. What ensues is the forbidden romance between David and Cam, and the fall out when their relationship is discovered.

The relationship between David and Cam is slow to build as both struggle with their growing attraction to one another; the taboo of the student/teacher romance; and the potential fall-out if and when their affair is discovered. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The mandatory YA story line characters are present: the adult figure in our heroine’s life is a mess; a lost cause, self-absorbed and without the capacity to parent. The requisite mean girls are alive and well; the best friend is caught between hatred and support; the one-time boyfriend is a lost puppy who is unable to let go of the girl he loves.

The dictionary defines lucidity as ‘clearness of thought’: a presumed capacity to perceive the truth directly and instantaneously, and with that in mind, perception is real when rumors begin to circulate. Our couple are well aware of the likelihood that if caught their lives and futures could be destroyed. Staying away from one another is a continuous battle, a battle they will lose in the end. Love and the heart know no boundaries including the taboo of a student/teacher relationship that will eventually damage and dismantle all thoughts of a happily ever after. The heartbreaking premise will captivate your attention; the characters are shattered and lost; the romance struggles in the face of the forbidden and the law. SECRET LUCIDITY is an emotional and powerful look at two people caught in a firestorm of controversy, disapproval and the taboo.

REVIEW: CRAVE Part Two is the second installment in E.K. Blair’s contemporary, new adult CRAVE duet that focuses on the relationship between two high school lovers, and the resulting turmoil and fallout as each enter their first year of college. CRAVE Part two cannot be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the events of CRAVE Part one.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Adaline and Kason) CRAVE Part two covers several years in the life of Kason, Adaline and her best friend Micah but mostly focuses on the struggles of our story line heroine. At the end of Part one Adaline’s life was destroyed; the pain and humiliation found our heroine walking away from the young man that she loves in the hopes of protecting not only his heart but from a future marred by memories and tears. Adaline believes revealing the truth will hurt everyone involved but her secrets and lies will eventually destroy the boy that she loves. Fast forward five years and our heroine must return to the town and people where it all began as tragedy continues to destroy the young man she left behind.

CRAVE Part Two is a story about one girl, two boys and a lifetime of secrets, heartache, addiction and recovery. Kason’s life slowly began to unravel when Ady refused to admit or acknowledge the truth about that fateful night that would tear apart their lives. Kason would remain oblivious but suspicious about the events that led to Ady’s spiral out of control while his own demons would demand and take hold without a second backwards glance. There are moments of infidelity, grief, shame and revelation. Age does not equate to maturity, and in this, our story line couple will continue to hurt the people they love. Ady runs when things begin to overwhelm; Kason buries his feelings with every willing female that crosses his path. Adaline will make selfish choices that affect the people in her life knowing that she will destroy a young man who has already suffered more than anyone could have ever imagined.

CRAVE Parts One and Two reads like a mature YA (Young Adult) story line rather than the more age appropriately titled new adult genre. The $ex scenes are implied and fade to black; the requisite love triangle is pervasive and frustrating, angst filled and frustrating; discouraging and frustrating ; heartbreaking and …frustrating ! Everyone deserves a happily ever after in a romance story line but with love triangles there is always someone whose heart will be destroyed never alluding to a happily ever after. The premise is emotional but I struggled with the love triangle aspect of the story- at times my lack of sympathy for the heroine bordered on apathy in light of what happened years before. The consequences of her choices, and her decision to remain quiet and run destroyed several lives in the process. The characters are dynamic but immature; the romance struggled with too many demons both current and past. CRAVE Part Two concludes Adaline and Kason’s roller coaster relationship-here’s hoping that Micah, Trent and Kate find their own happily ever after.

This is what happens when one person loves beyond the craving and the other craves beyond the loving.

••••••••••

REVIEW: CRAVE Part 1 is the first installment in E.K. Blair’s contemporary, young adult/new adult CRAVE DUET romance series focusing on seventeen year olds Kason and Adaline, high school students whose lives will spiral out of control when demons from the past control action of the present. I will be honest up front and say that I wasn’t initially aware the Crave Duet was a YA/NA story line but I was pleasantly surprised that the author stayed clear of most of the annoying (in my opinion) YA tropes.

Told from dual first person points of view (Adaline and Kason) CRAVE Part 1 follows the building relationship between Adaline and Kason. Adaline is the new girl at school who quickly finds herself part of the popular crowd, a popularity that is marked by jealousy and rumors about our story line heroine. Meeting Kason the first day of school alleviates many of Adaline’s fears but falling in love with Kason is unexpected and real.

CRAVE Part 1 follows a year in the life of two high school teenagers – a year that reveals family secrets, broken souls, and unimaginable guilt and shame. Adaline is an innocent; a sweet, naïve young woman who has yet to experience first love, $ex or too much drama in her life. Kason is a young man struggling to keep up appearances in the face of the truth-a truth that if revealed could destroy his relationship with the young woman he loves. Kason’s silence hides a multitude of secrets and sins but will Adaline’s love be enough to help him heal?

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Adaline’s friend from back home Molly, and Kason’s buds Micah, Trent and Rhett, as well as the introduction of Kason and Adaline’s mothers-two woman whose lives have gone in opposite directions.

CRAVE Part 1 is a simple read; most of the teens are typical, nothing too rebellious or over the top but our story line hero struggles with a past mired in dark secrets and shame. Unlike most YA story lines there is no love triangle (thank goodness), and the parental units are more or less respectable, understanding and normal-the relationship between Adaline and her father is tense and stressful but not unlike many relationships between parent and child in situations of divorce or second families.

CRAVE Part 1 is an emotional story line with plenty of ups and downs, twists, and revelations. Friendships will be made and lost; love with falter in the face of betrayal and lies. The premise is engaging and edgy; the characters are colorful, dynamic and charismatic; the romance is sweet; the $ex scenes are intimate, mostly implied or fade to black, without the use of sexually graphic, over the top language and text but saying that there are some issues between our story line couple that are addressed with honesty and clarity.

E.K. Blair touches on a potentially controversial subject-a subject many people do not completely understand. The author, as well as the leading couple, handle the sensitivity with maturity and grace with the understanding that not all is well in the young hero’s life.

CRAVE Part 1 ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

brick-synopsis

They say when you take revenge against another you lose a part of your innocence.

But I’m not innocent.

I haven’t been for a very long time.

My innocence was stolen from me. Taken was the life I was supposed to have. The soul I was born with. The ruby heart embedded in a life full of hopes and dreams.

Gone.
Vanished.

I never even had a choice.
I mourn that life. Mourn the what-ifs.
Until now.
I’m ready to take back what was always meant to be mine.

But every plan has a fatal flaw. Sometimes it’s the heart.

**Due to the dark and explicit nature of this book, it is recommended for mature audiences only as some scenes may be particularly disturbing.**

brick-excerpt

In an instant, he’s crouched down before me, hands spreading me open wider before dipping his tongue inside me. I continue massaging myself as he laps me up like I’m the only one who can quench his thirst. He sickens me, and as soon as I feel the swirl of hate manifest, I turn every part of me off and simply go through the movements I know he likes. I’m a well-oiled machine at this point, flawless in my performance.

He has no idea that I’m the poison in his bones, making my home in his soul. I’ve crept under his skin, and he never suspected a thing other than everything I’ve wanted him to, but he’s made my life a hell, and payback is a wicked bitch that comes in the form of me. I’m the devil seeped within the cracks of him. What he doesn’t know, is that it’s because of him that I am what I am, and he’s fallen into the cobwebs of my lies like a fool. I guess I should love him for that, because when he least suspects it, he’s going to give me everything I’ve been seeking—vengeance.

REVIEW: FADING is the first instalment in E.K.Blair’s contemporary, new adult series focusing on two twenty something adults with some major demons in their past. This is a story about rape and the resulting physical and emotional trauma as one woman endeavors to overcome the memories of that night. Along the way, we will be introduced to a number of secondary characters who love, support and basically enable the healing process to slow.

Fading focuses on Candace Parker and her recovery following a brutal rape and assault by someone she knew. Like many rape victims and survivors, Candace blames herself but refuses to press charges due to her family’s connections and position. As the storyline progresses, Candace has a difficult time in social situations and it will take the love of one man to show her that not all people are evil and cruel.

E.K. Blair pulls the reader into an emotional storyline; a roller coaster of tears and frustration – not only for the heroine but for the reader as well. Without ever having experienced such a brutal attack, no one can tell a rape survivor how to feel or what to do but our heroine continues to ‘fade’ as she so eloquently points out. The days turn into weeks and months, and she is still not able to acknowledge that she needs help. The PTSD and nightmares haunt her days and nights; her fear of crowded places and strangers is overwhelming; and her inability to talk about what has happened will push away the people that love her the most.

This is also a story of dysfunctional family dynamics. Without the support of family, Candace is a shell; going through the motions one day at a time.

The relationship between Candace and Ryan is loving, supportive and emotional, but Ryan has a secret that when it is finally revealed Candace feels betrayed, manipulated and abused all over again. Ryan’s past history is not all flowers and roses and we will learn his story in Falling.

FADING is a storyline about friendship and love; betrayal and pain; heartbreak and sorrow; acceptance and recovery. It will be a difficult storyline for many readers –rape is not an easy subject about which to talk or write- and it is made even more difficult by a heroine who does not acknowledge that she needs help with her recovery. At times it was frustrating watching Candace ‘fade’ knowing that everyone wanted to keep her safe and protected from further harm; she was fragile and broken but as the months go by she will begin to bury her demons through the love of a man who knows more than she could have possibly imagined.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 13, 2013

Knowing who you are and accepting who you are come at different prices.

Jase Kinrick grew up in your typical, all-American household. But after the death of his sister, his parents shut down, forcing him to deal with everything life throws his way alone. Terrified of the person he’s discovering himself to be, Jase has his way with every willing girl to try and rid himself of what he fears he is—gay.

Escaping California and moving to Seattle to attend the University of Washington, Jase frees himself to the reality that he likes men. Never staying with any guy long enough to get to know them, he doesn’t realize that he’s still hiding from who he is until he meets Mark. Scared of having real feelings for another guy stirs up the questions and fears he’s fought hard to bury.

To strip away the barriers to the heart of what is real, and to be okay with what lies underneath, will be Jase’s moment of truth. But he’ll need Mark to lead him there.

**This is a companion novel to the USA Today Bestseller, FADING.**

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: FREEING is the second storyline and companion novella to E.K. Blair’s FADING. The story is told from Jase’s point of view and runs parallel with a three to fourth month period just prior to and after the attack against Jase’s best friend Candace.

Freeing is a storyline that allows the reader into the mind of one man struggling with his sexual identity as well as the rape and recovery of his best friend. When his sister was killed in a car accident five years earlier, Jase’s parents shut down and forgot about their only son. Lost in a world of one night stands and mindless sex, Jase will finally meet Mark-the man who will claim him body and soul-but before he does, Jase makes a mistake that may cost him the man that he loves.

E.K. Blair pulls the reader into a story of a developing relationship between two people caught between both the private and public world of their own sexuality. The author handles the situation of coming out to parents and friends with finesse as one man discovers that you can only do so much when the people who are supposed to love you turn their backs and walk away.

FREEING is a story of one man ‘freeing’ his heart and mind-allowing him to love without judgment; to live without fear; to grow up and take responsibility for his actions. It is also a story about family and the struggles for acceptance in a judgmental world of bigotry. One man must accept that he will always be the prodigal son and another accepts the prodigal son with open arms.

E.K. Blair has written an emotional and sometimes heartbreaking storyline where preconceived and outdated notions can destroy a family and a life. Freeing is one man’s journey to uncover what it is in life he really wants and what he wants is the same as everyone else-to be loved for who he is.

REVIEW: FALLING is the second full length storyline (and third instalment) in E.K.Blair’s new adult, contemporary Fading series focusing on Ryan Campbell, Candace Parker and the aftermath of a brutal attack that left Candace a virtual shell of her former self. The storyline is told from Ryan’s POV and follows parallel to the first book in the series Fading. Falling begins several years earlier with a flashback to Ryan’s younger years and then starts to mesh itself into the present timeline a few weeks before the attack. E.K. Blair will then fast forward five to six years and we see what has happened to Ryan and Candace in the ensuing time.

FALLING allows the reader in to the mind of a man whose guilt rides him hard after discovering a man brutally raping a young woman behind his bar. Ryan holds himself partially responsible because he was too late onto the scene; his nightmares and constant thoughts of the beaten and abused woman becomes a living reality when he realizes that the woman he loves is the woman he was unable to save. The reader is pulled into Ryan’s story-friends, work and the people he loves and protects. We learn more about what drives Ryan at work and at play, but also the build up of a relationship between two people with more in common than they could possibly know.

The storyline follows Ryan and Candace’s building relationship along the same timeline as Fading but we get an in depth look into the thoughts and feelings behind a man who is falling in love with a woman who hides a painful secret-one that Ryan is all too heartbreakingly aware. But everyone has secrets and Ryan’s family history will be revealed so that the reader will understand the demons that ride Ryan’s present.

This is a story about rape and recovery but it is also a story about family and loss; forgiveness and moving on. Both Candace and Ryan’s dysfunctional family units are perfect fodder for psychological analysis and in this we see that sometimes asking for help is the only way to start on the road to recovery. As the recovery process begins to take hold, Candace will finally realize what it is she wants – and she wants the happiness that only family and Ryan Campbell can give.

E.K.Blair has written about a difficult subject; you do not have to experience the heartbreaking sorrow and guilt to understand what everyone is feeling or how the attack has left the main characters numb and in pain. The characters are not perfect-they are flawed-they are imperfect humans living in an imperfect world but a world where there is also love and a happily ever after. Life is never easy but it is made more difficult by the vile and evil that lives next door or on the next street-we are the only ones who can move forward; no one can tell us how to feel; and in the end we have to take responsibility for our own recovery so that the future will be open to the possibility of moving forward and letting go.
