Review:

Treoir Dragon Chronicles of the Belador World by Dianna Love is the 5th book in this 9-book arc.  As a big fan of Dianna Love, as I have read all of her series. Refresher: Daegan and his team are attacked by Immortiks, who were supposed dead many years ago. Many of his Belador team are being held prisoners, with the threat of death if Daegan can’t find the missing ‘grimoire’ volumes. The information on the Immortiks and the grimoire is difficult to find, as it dates back thousands of years ago.

As the story continues, Daegan with the help of Tristan and the entity he promised to help, together they were able to find a way to rescue Casidhe away from the hands of Queen Maeve. Casidhe at first believed the bad things said about Daegan, but after hearing how he was in dire straits, and showed how much he cared for her, she realizes the truth.  Knowing she was safe, Casidhe allows Daegan to go with the entity to complete his promise and she would wait for him

Daegen and Tristan find themselves in dangerous situation, as the entity did not tell all the truth, putting their lives in danger.  But in a short time, they manage to get what was needed, and escape back home to Casidhe, but they needed to find the hidden Grimore box.  While Casidhe and Tristan go off to find her friend, Daegan goes to visit Brina, as she is about to give birth.  Daegan also discovers some secrets and revelations from Lanna, that will affect their future.

Evalle, who is acting in charge for Quinn, finds herself, Adrianna and Reese being attacked by many demons, who mainly want Reese.  When things settle, Quinn finally finds Reese to tell her how he feels and wants the baby; and to keep her safe.

It is always great to see all of our favorites throughout each book. What follows is a non-stop action filled, pulse pounding story, with each chapter wild and exciting.  I am not going to tell too much more, since I do not want to give spoilers, as these are short stories and saying too much would be too revealing. As normal, this book ends with an amazing multiple cliffhanger; involving Evalle, with Adrianna; Casidhe discovering that she had been betrayed long ago and Daegan and Tristan in trouble again. As I have said previously, this is a 9-book series arc and you truly do need to read these books in cohesion.  If you are  love paranormal, urban fantasy, suspense, romance, great characters, you should be reading Dianna Love.

Give Way to Night by Cass Morris – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / BAM / Book Depository

Description:

The second book of the Aven Cycle explores a magical Rome-inspired empire, where senators, generals, and elemental mages vie for power.

Latona of the Vitelliae, mage of Spirit and Fire, is eager to wield her newfound empowerment on behalf of the citizens of Aven–but societal forces conspire to keep her from exercising her gifts, even when the resurgence of a banished cult plots the city’s ruin. To combat this threat, Latona must ally with Fracture mage Vibia, the distrustful sister of Sempronius Tarren.

While Latona struggles to defend their home, Sempronius leads soldiers through wartorn provinces to lift the siege of Toletum, where Latona’s brother Gaius is hemmed in by supernatural forces. Sempronius must contend not only with the war-king Ekialde and his sorcerers, but with the machinations of political rivals and the temptations of his own soul, ever-susceptible to the darker side of ambition.

Though separated by many miles soon after their love affair began, Latona and Sempronius are united by passion as they strive to protect Aven and build its glorious future

Review:

Give Way to Night by Cass Morris is the 2nd book in her Aven Cycle series.  This is an epic fantasy that takes place in Aven, with an Ancient Rome background, where they worship the Roman Deity.  The story is filled with magic, intrigue, history and romance.  Give Way To Night was a good story, but I did have mixed feelings, which I will note later in my review.

Latona, our heroine in the first book, continues to be the main character in this story. Lataona is the middle sister of the Vitelliae family that is highly respected in Aven. She continues to learn more about her mage Spirit and Fire powers.  Latona is in a loveless marriage forced by her father, but she is loyal & very close to her sisters.  I really loved Latona, and her two sisters, Aula and Alhena, and how strong all three women truly were. It was great when Latona was able to work with Vibia and Merula, who I thought were also great.

Sempronius Tarren, continues to be our hero, and is out in the field with his men to try and find out who is trying to destroy Aven, especially with strange supernatural attacks. Tarren is a very powerful shadow mage.

What follows is an exciting adventure that will put Latona and the other ladies in dangerous situations a number of number times.   Tarren will also have his hands full trying fight the unknown enemy and save his soldiers.  There were a number of villians that both Latona & Vibia came up against, as well as Tarren’s soldiers fight against.   I loved everything about Latona, Vibia, Aula, Merula and their chapters. I thought Tarren’s chapters were good, but all the other chapters were tedious, with too much details and slow reading, causing me to lose interest, pushing along to get back to Latona and the ladies.

As much as I enjoyed the story revolving around Aven, Latona, her family, Tarren, supporters, I did have some feelings about the rest.  I thought the other chapters with various villians/political members over done with so much details, I ended up skipping much of it. Overall, Give Way to Night was a good story, with some very good characters.   There is a cliffhanger, which makes me want to read the final book; however, I am still on the fence, as this was a huge book, with so many details and characters, I did get lost a number of times along the way.

Daughter of the Serpentine by E.E. Knight – a Review

Daughter of the Serpentine by E.E. Knight – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
As a young dragoneer moves through the ranks of the prestigious Serpentine Academy, her challenges grow greater and her time grows short to draw out a series of deadly threats, in this thrilling coming-of-age fantasy novel.

Sixteen-year-old Ileth is now an Apprentice Dragoneer, with all of the benefits and pitfalls that her elevation in rank entails. But her advancement becomes less certain after a she’s attacked by an unknown enemy, and Ileth begins to suspect that someone deadly may be hiding within the walls of the academy.

Outside of the walls there is a different challenge. The Rari Pirates are strangling the Vale Republic. What they lack in dragon firepower, they make up for in the brutality of their ever-expanding raids, making hostages or slaves of the Republic’s citizens. Surrounded by enemies, Ileth will need to learn what kind of dragoneer she wants to be. And as she makes decisions about her future, Ileth will have the chance to uncover the secrets of her past. Both will irrevocably change the course of her life.

Review:

Daughter of the Serpentine by E.E. Knight is the second book in his fantasy Dragoneer Academy series.  Daughter of the Serpentine picks up shortly after the last book left off, and continues to follow our heroine, Ileth’s,  journey into this magical world of dragons.  Ileth’s earned the respect of her peers in the last book, and is now an apprentice to a dragoneer, which has some pitfalls; she also continues to help with her dancing group.

Ileth finds herself meeting new friends, as well as keeping her old ones.  When a request comes from a Lord claiming to be her father, she is forced to leave the academy and spend time with her powerful and wealthy father and his wife, which changes things for her (having grown up poor). But in time, her friend Santeel will visit, and together they work on the father to allow Ileth to return to her training to become a dragoneer.

Ileth continues to be a wonderful heroine, who is smart, savvy, loyal and always willing to go beyond. I loved how she made friends with Aurue, a young Dragon, who befriended her.  I hope in future books, perhaps in time she will become his dragoneer.  But it was great to follow her journey, meeting new friends and dragons, as well as riding one of the dragons back home.   With a war on the horizon, Ileth will have to step up to help, proving how good she has become, even at the age of 17.

Daughter of the Serpentine was an excellent story line, with a wonderful heroine, very good secondary characters, dragons, exciting and action packed.  As I had said in my previous review, I thought there was a bit too much details that slowed down the story a bit. I did enjoy the book and look forward to finding out where EE Knight is going to take us in the next book.  If you enjoy fantasy, dragons, training, and a wonderful young heroine, I suggest you read this series.

Treoir Dragon Chronicles of the Belador World: #2 by Dianna Love

Treoir Dragon Chronicles of the Belador World: #2 by Dianna Love

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple

Description:
Daegan is running out of time to find the destructive dragon impersonating him and the woman who claims to be the Treoir family squire, but Casidhe has no intention of being caught. She’s racing to find her best friend believed captured by a deadly being. With Atlanta reeling from supernaturals being revealed, the Beladors are battling to protect humans while losing their own to Imortiks possessing any warm body, human or nonhuman. Hunting answers in Ireland lands Tristan somewhere he quickly realizes epitomizes a fate worse than death. Cathbad visits Queen Maeve to gain access to her resources, but the meeting turns explosive and costs him more than he could have imagined.

Imortiks drawn to the venom in Daegan’s body are draining his powers when he needs them most. With Beladors awaiting execution in Atlanta and Tristan still to be found, Daegan goes all in to gain information. Choosing the lesser of two evils means still ending up with one.

Review:

Treoir Dragon Chronicles of the Belador World: Book 2 is the 2nd book in the 9 book arc of this series. Refresher: Daegan and his team are attacked by Immortiks, who were supposed dead many years ago. Even though Daegan is a bit disabled, but many are being held prisoners, with the threat of death if he can’t find the missing ‘grimoire’, volumes.  With Tristan now captured by another evil entity trying to find the volumes, Daegan must find help. The information on the Immortiks and the grimoire is difficult to find, as it dates back thousands of years ago

When we left off in book 1, Daegon is desperate to save his people from the Imortiks, especially Tristan, who is captured by a familiar evil being.  In book 2, Daegon is in dire straits, himself trying to recover from the poisoning, as well as a strange and mysterious woman who wields a big sword and manages to escape him.  Casidhe is an ancient Luigsech researcher, who is able to read the grimoire volumes what others also want, but she only cares about her friend Fenella, who is now missing.

Daegon will bring in Quinn and Reese to help him find Casidhe, as he needs her to help, as well as finding out who has kidnapped Tristan, as time is of essence to save him.  Casidhe doesn’t trust Daegon (since she does not know who he really is), but eventually she is willing to help Daegon, but only if he will help her find Fenella.  They both get off on the wrong foot, with constant tension and arguing between them.  I suspect in upcoming books we may see them become romantically involved, as we can sense their budding chemistry.  The POV’s continue with Daegan, the evil Cathbad and also Casidhe. We also learn from Quinn, that Reese is keeping a secret, which we will learn more about in upcoming books.

This is a difficult review to write without giving spoilers, as these are short stories and saying too much would be too revealing. You truly do need to read these books in cohesion.  What follows is an exciting, tense, suspenseful, paranormal adventure. It is great to see many of our favorites from the Belador series make appearances to help Daegon and find the grimoire.   If you are new and love paranormal, urban fantasy, suspense, romance, great characters, you should be reading Dianna Love.

Review:

Treoir Dragon Chronicles of the Belador World by Dianna Love is the 1st book in her new 9 book series Arc.  I have been a huge fan of Dianna Love for a long time, having loved her Belador & other series.  With this new arc in the same world, I am excited to return there.

Treoir Dragon Chronicles centers around the Belador King, Daegan, as he is called to rescue one of his Beladors.  We see that three Beladors in separate spots, are taken down by a powerful Immortik (thought dead thousands of years ago), and even Daegan nor  Tristan cannot help the kidnapped members.  Daegan, who is ultra-powerful, and can secretly shift to a Red Dragon, but to his surprise, he feels the Immortik is able to disable him; he is given a warning; the Beladors have two weeks to find two missing ‘grimoire’ that was divided up and hidden two millennias ago, or his people will be killed.   Daegan has no choice and calls his team together to Treoir to find a way to stop the Immortik, get the grimoire before Maeve, Viper, Cathbad or Macha find it themselves.  On top of this issue, there is an unknown group creating videos to show humans that supernaturals do exist, and showing a red dragon on the screen.  Daegan is determined to find who this fake Red Dragon is, not to mention who is behind this chaos to create fear to humans.

It was great to see all of our favorites again, such as Evalle, Tristan, Adrianna, Quinn, Storm, Tzader, Brina.  The information on the Immortiks and the grimoire is difficult to find, as it dates back thousands of years ago.  Daegan with help from Tristan, searches for a female squire who is able to find old books, and going back to his old homes to look for family that may have survived his 2000-year captivity.

We do get two POV’s from the evil Cathbad and the squire, giving us more information as to what Daegan doesn’t know.   Daegan, the Beladors and humans are all in danger as the world as they know it is about the change. Daegan is a great leader, loyal and protective of his team, and determined to defeat the enemy.

I am not going to tell too much more, since I do not want to give spoilers.  What follows is an exciting pulse pounding paranormal, suspenseful adventure, with many of our wonderful heroes from the previous books.  Keep in mind that these are shorter books in this 9-book arc, and be warned that this one ended with a cliffhanger.  If you are a Belador fan, do not miss this new series.  If you are new and love paranormal, urban fantasy, suspense, romance, great characters, you should be reading Dianna Love.

The Moonlit World by Edward Willett – a Review

The Moonlit World by Edward Willett – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Book Depository

Description:

Fresh from their adventures in a world inspired by Jules Verne, Shawna Keys and Karl Yatsar find themselves in a world that mirrors much darker tales. Beneath a full moon that hangs motionless in the sky, they’re forced to flee terrifying creatures that can only be vampires…only to run straight into a pack of werewolves.

As the lycanthropes and undead battle, Karl is spirited away to the castle of the vampire queen. Meanwhile, Shawna finds short-lived refuge in a fortified village, where she learns that something has gone horribly wrong with the world in which she finds herself. Once, werewolves, vampires, and humans lived there harmoniously. Now every group is set against every other, and entire villages are being mysteriously emptied of people.

Somehow, Karl and Shawna must reunite, discover the mysteries of the Shaping of this strange world, and escape it for the next, without being sucked dry, devoured, or–worst of all–turned into creatures of the night themselves.

Beneath the frozen, gibbous moon, allies, enemies, surprises, adventures, and unsettling revelations await.

Review:

The Moonlit World by Edward Willett is the 3rd book in his Worldshapers series. Brief refresher:  Shawna Keys lives in a perfect world, one she shaped to fit her, and she doesn’t remember how she learned to shape worlds. But when the evil Adversary enters her world, and slowly begins to shape people to his needs, and not know Shawna.  Karl, who is sent to help Shawna understand her powers, convinces her she needs to leave her world behind, and find a way to defeat the Adversary. Together they enter other shaped worlds.

When we left off in the second book (Master of the World), Shawna Keys, our heroine, managed to fix and leave the Jules Verne shaped world and with Karl, enter a portal into a new unknown world.  Upon entering this world, they end up being chased by flying creatures (bats), which they suspect are vampires, and Karl ends up being captured by those vampires. Shawna manages to escape and runs to safety, only to end up in a small village of humans, run by a priest, who makes her go through tests to see if she is a vampire or a werewolf.   Karl is taken to the Vampire Queen Patricia, with the vampires believing Karl is a spy sent from the Werewolf Queen.

When Shawna manages to leave the village, she is captured by the werewolf pack, who is run by Queen Stephanie.   They too believe that Shawna is a spy sent by the vampire queen.  Shawna realizes all is not well in this world, as both Stephanie and Patricia, who were best friends, and were the shapers of this peaceful world, which has changed so much, that they are now enemies.

Karl escapes and joins Shawna, as they try to find the reason for the world change and destruction to many.  They discover a rogue shaper, who viciously kidnaps the young humans for his benefit, and brings chaos to both the vampire and werewolf world. This is a difficult review to write, as there are so many details and characters, and to tell too much would ruin the storyline. I do love Shawna, as she is a great heroine.

What follows is an exciting adventure where Shawna with help from Karl, will learn more on how to use the powers she has to shape things on her own, and find a way to stop this rogue shaper.  There were some very good secondary characters from both the vampires and the werewolves, as well as the human Priest. The Moonlit World was a detailed, exciting, and entertaining story line.

She must race against time to uncover the truth about a catastrophe that will leave the world broken, divided, and at war.

Aurianna just wants answers. But the people need a saviour.

Review:

Dawn Rising by Lisa M. Green is a time travel book and the 1st book in her new Awakened series. Not my usual genre, but I’m always open to new authors and their ideas. The back cover intrigued me, so let’s go…..

People come out of the darkness, we should be scared, they are dangerous. But if captured they can be drained and then killed. But you need to burn the bodies. But who are the people? Are the citizens aware those people are drained and burned? There are lots of questions that need answering.

Aurianna knows she’s different, she doesn’t act the same as other, she can remember when the sun came out, when there was warmth in the air. But now there is only grey days and darkness. I did find Aurianna a little annoying at times, acting like a grown up one moment and then childish.

When a stranger comes to town, she begins to put pieces of a puzzle together. A time traveller, Aurianna is then told she’s the key to a prophecy, she can help the future, but it means she has to go to the past.

Pharis is a traveller, coming to the future is a dangerous thing, no one has come back yet, so it’s all resting on him. Meeting Aurianna didn’t go the way he expected, and trying to convince her to go to the past with him proves interesting.

What happens next is a fast paced race through this book. Going back to the past to change the future, sounds easy right? Wrong! And they have to train Aurianna to use her powers, but I also get the feeling they are leaving a few things out! And what is the darkness? Do Aurianna and Pharis need to be wary of it?

I have to admit i thoroughly enjoyed the book!

First books in a new series need to be finely balanced, too much information and we get stuck, not enough information and it doesn’t keep the readers interest. This had it. And it kept me turning the pages.

But I felt the characters needed a little more work, they felt a little stiff. I know we are in hard times, but there doesn’t seem any lightheartedness. And the like/hate/love between Pharis and Aurianna needed just a tweak, they almost seemed to gel, then they’d lose it.

And we have a twist I didn’t see coming. The ending has you wondering it the next book will start there…..

The Vanished Queen by Lizbeth Campbell – a Review

The Vanished Queen by Lizbeth Campbell – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / BAM /

Description:
When a country is held in thrall to a vicious, despotic king, it’s up to one woman to take him down.

Long ago, Queen Mirantha vanished. King Karolje claimed it was an assassination by a neighboring king, but everyone knew it was a lie. He had Disappeared her himself.

But after finding the missing queen’s diary, Anza—impassioned by her father’s unjust execution and inspired by Mirantha’s words—joins the resistance group to overthrow the king. When an encounter with Prince Esvar thrusts her into a dangerous game of court politics, one misstep could lead to a fate worse than death.

Esvar is the second son to an evil king. Trapped under his thumb and desperate for a way out, a chance meeting with Anza gives him the opportunity to join the resistance. Together, they might have the leverage to move against the king—but if they fail, their deaths could mean a total loss of freedom for generations to follow.

Review:

The Vanished Queen by Lizbeth Campbell is a standalone epic fantasy.  This is the first time I have read Campbell, and after completing this book, I hope to read more of her, as The Vanished Queen was a fantastic read.  The story has three POV’s; Anza, Esvar and Mirantha.

We meet Anza, our heroine, at that start when she is sneaks into the library where all books have been locked up and forbidden. She comes across the diary of Queen Mirantha, who disappeared or was killed 12 years by her husband, the King.  The diary, as Anza will read, details Mirantha’s hard life with the evil and corrupt King Karolje, who rules the kingdom with fear and terror under a vicious rule, which has created a resistance that is bent on overthrowing him. Mirantha loves her two sons, Tevin and Esvar, who even to this day, love  and mourn their mother.

Anza, whose father was executed by the King, becomes more determined to join the resistance, as she reads Mirantha’s journal.  When she meets Sparrow, the leader of the resistance, she proves that she is an asset, especially as she has been trained by her father to excel in fighting and bow shooting. Anza was a fabulous heroine, as she was strong, smart, independent and loyal, not to mention her hatred of the king.  After a resistance attack, Anza is taken to be questioned by a bad corrupt captain, only to be saved by Prince Esvar, who claimed she was innocent of any wrong doing.

Prince Esvar, the second son, wants to protect and help his brother, who is the heir to the throne.  They both know their father has no qualms in killing them, if they stand in his way.  Esvar will eventually befriend Anza, and uses this opportunity to approach the resistance to help defeat his father.  With Anza at his side, Esvar tries to convince Sparrow and her team to help him eliminate the close supporters of the King, and help them defeat the King.  Can Sparrow and the resistance trust the Prince?

In the Queen’s journal, we learn how horrific Karojle ruled and destroyed innocent people, as well as making her life difficult, even to the point of killing someone close to her, who she was having an affair with, as well as other friends.  Then she is taken prisoner to disappear, but everyone knew the King was behind her ‘disappearance’.

In a short time, Anza and Esvar will find themselves attracted to each other, which will become a slow built romance that remains in the background.  I loved both Anza and Esvar, as they were great together, with Esvar determined to help his brother take the throne, even if it meant his death.  Early on the story was a bit slow, but as in all fantasy, the beginning introduces all the major characters, when we learn about this world.   The world building was very well done, with many details to give us a glimpse at these wonderful characters, and the political intrigue, struggles and the battle to defeat evil.

The Vanished Queen is a wonderful dark adventure, with fantastic characters, and a world filled with evil, secrets, lies, deceit & betrayal. I will say there is an amazing twist that blew us away.  Very well done.  The last 1/3 of the book was intense, exciting, non-stop action, that had me on the edge, as we raced to the climax.  What I loved the most about this book, was that it was a standalone, not having us wait for a couple more books.  Thank you, Lizbeth Campbell for this fantastic story.  If you like fantasy at its best, I suggest you read The Vanished Queen.
