Review:

The Sheriffs Little Matchmaker by Carrie Nichols is a Rose Creek, Texas novel.

Sasha Honeycutt has moved to Rose Creek, Texas to start a new life. A new life where she isn’t “the poor widow”.”  After losing her policeman husband five years previous, she is ready for a freah, new start! When she arrives she takes a quick trip to New Orleans with friends. And that’s when on a dare she kisses a tall, dark, and handsome stranger cowboy!  But this kiss is more than either of them expected, and as Sasha disappears into the night, the sexy cowboy searches all over the French Quarter for her. To no avail!

But Sasha chalks it all up to a drunk weekend dare that she attempts to forget, she begins her new job as an elementary school teacher. She is determined to steer clear of dating two types of men. Law enforcement and her students parent!

Remy Fontenot is the town Sheriff, and also a single dad. His seven year old daughter Evie has a new school teacher that she just can’t stop talking about. And when Remy gets called in for a parent teacher conference, he has no idea he is about to meet the sexy stranger he searched all over the French Quarter for.

Sparks fly when they come face to face again. But little did they know that Evie has plans of her own! Plans to get her dad and Miss Honeycutt together!

What a wonderfully heart warming story!

Sasha has some history. Her husband was killed in the line if duty as a police officer. She has sworn to never date one again! That and the fact that it is unethical for her to date one of her students parents, makes it hard for her to give in to everything she feels for Sheriff Remy!

Sasha has a history of struggles, but I appreciate her attempt at starting a new life. She is resolute and determined to not ruin any chance of staying put in Rose Creek. But her body betrays her at ever turn and run in with Sheriff Remy.

Remy Fontenot is Cajun, handsome and strong willed.  He searched all over for his kissing stranger and when she ends up in his town, teaching his daughter, he knows it was meant to be. But he is wary also, he has a daughter to consider in all of this. The last thing he wants is to bring his daughtet pain again.

Evie Fontenot is an adorable, smart, conniving seven year old. She does everything she can to get her dad and Miss Honeycut to spend time together! Even getting every single word wrong on her spelling test in order to get her dad called in for a parent – teacher conference!  She is precocious and funny! Making me laugh out loud several times!

The story moves quickly and steadily. And is quite endearing. You want nothing more than for Sasha to give in to what she teuly wants. But will she go against everything she believes to find the happiness she wants?

I highly recommend especially if you love a good Cajun accent and a hot, handsome lawman and an adorable seven year old!

Never Expected You by Jody Holford – a Review

Never Expected You by Jody Holford – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / iTunes

Description:
When Zach Mason, former army sergeant turned veterinarian for war-wounded animals, returns home, the decision to stay is easy. But convincing the only other vet in town to hire him is a good deal harder. It doesn’t help that the beautiful, intelligent, and stubborn Stella Lane is determined to make his life hell.

Stella doesn’t take outside help easily—she’s been let down in the past, most recently by her ex, just as she’d begun to plan their wedding. Trusting Zach with her animals is one thing, but trusting him with more is a hard pass. Too bad the handsome vet is nothing but temptation. And her new roommate…

Review:

Never Expected You is book two in the Love Unexpected series by Jody Holford.

Dr. Stella Lane is a veterinarian that has returned home to the small town of Brockton, to work along side her father in his veterinarian clinic. But after her father passes away she is left with the task of trying to keep his practice and the farm afloat.  Her father left her with an awful lot of debt and customers who pay for services with casseroles.

Stella is stubborn and prefers to do everything on her own.  Which doesn’t leave much time for anything other than work. And after the fiasco of her last relationship she has no desire to even think about men in a romantic way. She has a few close friends which she considers family but beyond that its just her and her well loved animals.

Zach Mason, left Brockton right after graduation and the loss of his best friend Travis in a tragic accident.  Running away, he joined the Army, did several tours of duty and became a veterinarian. He spent his Army career planning his return to Brockton.  Coming back as an adult and making this place his home. But Brockton already has a town vet.  A man that has spent his entire life caring for the towns animals.  A man that was a mentor to Zach when he was a teenager and bullied because he was poor and his dad was an alcoholic.  Zach’s plan was to return to Brockton and try and convince Dr. Lane to take him on as an associate.

But when Zach returns and finds Dr. Stella Lane the daughter of his mentor.  She was never what he expected. He decided to go ahead with his plan to convince Stella to take him on as an associate. But Stella is not so easy to persuade.  She is stubborn and although she feels like she is on a sinking ship, she knows that she probably can not do it alone anymore. After Zach explains to her just what her father meant to him she decides to give him a chance. And Zach comes up with some amazing ideas to change things for the clinic and Stella. When Zach’s efforts begin to turn the vet clinic and the farm around, Stella starts to open her heart to him.

But will she end up broken hearted just like the last relationship she was in?  Will Zach be able to convince her that everything between them is real?

I absolutely loved this story, first because there are so many animals involved and that both the main characters are veterinarians. I loved the setting, a vet clinic / home / farm.  Where everything in Stella’s life is contained.  Small town feel where there was so much love and admiration for her father. The fact that he accepted casseroles as payment for services he rendered made her father even more endearing to me.

It was like you were actually in the small town, experiencing everything along with them. The chemistry between Zach and Stella was palpable from the moment they laid eyes on each other. And it only built as they spent more and more time together.

I had no idea this book was part of a series when I started it. But everything was laid out so perfectly that it can definitely be read as a stand alone. But now that I know that it is part of a series I have bought the first book because this one was just that good.

This book is the perfect blend of hot and steamy romance along with an endearing small town story.

Highly recommend for a cool, autumn weekend that you want to spend cozied up on the couch reading!

Former soldier Erik Harrison is a dead man walking. The sole survivor of an ambush, the guilt of losing his friends is crushing. He questions his own sanity, remembering the vision he saw as he was dying –– a battle angel come to collect his friends’ souls.

Valkyrie Brenna Lund doesn’t know why she failed in her duty to reap Erik’s soul on the battlefield. He deserves his place with the other mighty warriors in Valhalla, and if she wants to return home, she has to kill him.

There are consequences for betraying the gods. But the closer Brenna and Erik become, the more they both want to risk everything for a future together. If only an immortal hunter weren’t sent to kill them both.

Review:

Her Alpha Viking by Sheryl Nantus opens with soldier Erik Harrison on the battlefield of war. Stuck right in the middle of an ambush, his entire unit in the throes of chaos and suffering. Erik is dying and he knows that there is little chance that he will make it out of here alive. As he lays dying a woman appears before him. She is more like a celestial being, but to him she looks like a warrior princess. She is seemingly collecting the souls of his brothers in arms. Touching each of his comrades with the tip of her spear and sending their souls to Valhalla! When she steps to him, she doesn’t touch him with her spear, as she has the others, instead she kisses him, steps back and ascends to heaven.

One year later, Erik is still fighting the ghosts of war. He spends his time as a cage fighter. Moving from city to city running from the memories of the war. That is until the the beautiful Valkyrie Brenna Lund returns to finish what she didn’t do during the ambush.  Return Erik’s soul to Valhalla.

But when Brenna realizes that she can’t do it – even though she has lost her status as a Valkyrie because she allowed Erik to live. Her and Erik become the hunted by her sister Valkyrie Kara. Kara is there to complete the job that Brenna has failed to do. On the run and trying to stay alive, Erik and Brenna slowly begin to fall in love with each other.

This was a beautiful love story where the heroine is torn between her life as a Valkyrie and now her life as a mere mortal;  and the man that she has given up everything for.

I enjoyed both of the main characters.

Erik is a guilt ridden veteran trying to come to terms with the loss of his unit and reconcile what he saw, when the Valkyrie came and returned his comrades to Valhalla!

Brenna has come back to earth with the mission of killing Erik and fulfilling the promise of returning his soul to the great halls of Valhalla. But once here, she realizes yet again that she just can’t do it.

Faced with the fact that she has not completed her mission nor would she be able to do it. She is not sure of the consequences she will now face as a mortal. And will she ever be able to return to her life as a Valkyrie? Does she even want to?

This story has an incredible mix of Norse mythology and romance.  I love the stories of Odin and mother Freyja mixed in with the modern romance! The characters are warm and relatable.   A wonderful read that I would recommend to any Norse mythology fan.

Description:
Secrets are con artists: they trick you into letting them out.

Sadie loves her rocker boyfriend Henry and her running partner and best friend Lucie, but no one can measure up to her truest love and hero, the dazzling and passionate George. George, her secret.

When something goes wrong and Sadie is taken to the hospital calling out for George, her hidden life may be exposed. Now she must confront the truth of the past, and protect a world she is terrified to lose.

Review:

The Museum Of Us is the debut novel by Tara Wilson Redd.

Sometimes reality is too much to handle. We all find ways to escape the realities of this world. For me it’s getting lost in the pages of a book. When we are young, those of us that are bookworms, we could get completely lost in the pages of a book. Transport ourselves into the world of Hogwarts, or take an adventure with a hobbit. But as we begin to age, those moments of getting lose in those worlds are less and less.

But for Sadie, she loses herself in her daydreams.  She walks within two worlds. The real world, where she has a rocker boyfriend, Henry and best friend Lucie who love and support everything that she does. They are and will always be there for her.  But then there is the other world that Sadie gets lost in.  Lost within her own mind and self.  But this world does not compare to the real world. This world contains George. George is her hero, her best friend, her true love.  They have walked a hundred worlds and lost themselves in the pages of hundreds of books.  But George isn’t real.  He is only real within Sadie’s mind.

Which is why she has kept him a complete secret from the real world and all who love and support her.  But that all changes when Sadie is in a car accident and rushed to the emergency room.  While in the midst of the chaos she screams for George. Desperate to know where he is. This signals the doctors that something else is going on – more than meets the eye.  Sadie then spends some time in the hospital and then a psychiatric ward, trying to determine what is real and what isn’t.

She can’t lose George, he has always been there for her and she does not want to live her life without him. When her two worlds threaten to collide will Sadie be able to face the reality of a world without George? Will she be able to continue without him?

I am going to be honest the beginning of this book completely confused me, I was lost in the chaos and confusion of what is Sadie’s world and why it is that way.  The story unfurls into a wondrous mental health expose.  I love the worlds that George and Sadie travel to. Hogwarts, Amsterdam – all of the worlds were so beautifully written and the picture they painted was spot on. The writing drags you in and doesn’t let you go.  After finishing the book I believe the confusion of Sadie’s world in the beginning only enriches the story as it develops and also shows a glimpse into what mental illness is truly like.

This story may cause triggers for some but for the most part I believe it could only enrich others as they experience what the life of someone with a mental illness might be like.

In the end Sadie must decide if she can move forward without George and the world she has created or continue on with her fantasies and daydreams.

I would absolutely recommend this book, with a side note that it does involve mental health and mental health issues.

Wild Child by A.S. Green – a Review

Wild Child by A.S. Green – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
I have never been to a place so tiny. Little Bear Island could fit in New York’s armpit. Still a job is a job and, after surviving Afghanistan, what’s twenty-four hours in podunk hell?

Providing private security for a celebrity wedding is nothing new…until I come face-to-face with Natalie O’Brien. The woman who chose someone else and kicked me to the curb six years ago. Time has done nothing to tame her. She’s a red-headed beauty with a sharp tongue and nerves of steel who could seriously knock me off my game…

When my assistant bails, Natalie jumps at the chance to get off this tiny island. Now we’re stuck criss-crossing the country in my SUV, with her tantalizing scent filling the cab and her smart mouth making me very…uncomfortable. Good thing the job will be over soon. So why does the thought of saying goodbye a second time make my heart stop?

Review:

Wild Child is the follow up to the book Summer Girl by A. S. Green.

Natalie O’Brien lives on Little Bear Island on Lake Superior.  She is everyone’s go to person on the island. A Jane of all trades so to speak. She is the glue that holds her small family together.  But something is missing.  Something or someone has been missing since she walked away from the love of her life six years ago. Six years ago, she was following her favorite band around the country, when she met Jackson Sparke, Jax as she called him. They had a whirlwind romance and he has forever been stuck in her mind.  So much so that no man that has come into Natalie’s life can not hold a candle to Jax.

For the past six years Natalie has pined away for the man she was sure she would never see again.  That is until there is a celebrity wedding on the island and she meets the man in charge of the security detail.

Jackson Sparke has had a rough go of life.  His parents were never there for him,  his gram passed away when he was younger and the girl of his dreams walked away from him and never looked back.  He joined the Navy and became a Navy Seal.  Saw combat and lost some friends who meant the world to him. Struggling with his own issues he never expects to run into the girl that has been on his mind for the past six years.

When they first meet each other again, they both pretend to not recognize the other.  They both have gotten older and their looks have slightly changed. But how long can they pretend that that have no idea who the other is?  What begins here is a wonderful angst filled story of rekindling old love, second chances and moving forward when there are so many complications from the past.

I enjoyed Natalie’s character.  She seems to mean a lot to a lot of people.  She seems to be everything for everyone else.  And in that she loses herself. She doesn’t want to spend the rest of her life on her little island.  She dreams of leaving and traveling and trying new things.  She has clearly not gotten over the romance she shared years ago with Jax.  And when he comes back into her life and offers her a job in New York City, she jumps at the chance. But she is just a small town girl, how will she hold up in the big city.

Jax was an angst riddled character that you just absolutely fall in love with.  You can see that he has truly been done wrong by people that were supposed to love him.   You can see that he truly cared for Natalie when he met her six years ago and was devastated when she didn’t stay with him and chose to return to the island without him.  He loved his grandmother and her death was just another whole left in his heart.  But he has gone on to do amazing things.  Start his own investigation company, which is currently doing quite well.  But he is not prepared for what running into Natalie again has brought to his life.

This is a classic romance with a twist of angst.  You aren’t quite sure you will get your happily ever after with this one. but in the end the romance is romantic and the lives of the characters feel real and fact based.  I loved that Jax was real, and while he was handsome and hard, he still was real.  With real faults, and qualities he just does not like about himself.  But when he is willing to make an effort to open up to Natalie and let his guard down – you completely fall in love with him.

This book can be read as a complete stand alone – which is what I have done.  There was nothing that left me questioning what I have missed. But now I want to go back and read Katherine’s story and will do just that with Summer Girl.

Review:

Little Do We Know is a coming of age contemporary story by Tamara Ireland Stone. Ex-best friends Hannah and Emory are next door neighbors. They have been best friends for as long as anyone can remember. There is exactly thirty six steps between their bedroom windows.

But a few months ago they had a fight and they have not spoken since. Neither one of them can take back what they said to each other that night.

With the fight weighing on both of them, they want nothing more than to bridge the gap between them. But they just don’t know how.

Emory is planning on attending UCLA after graduation, and she plans on having the time of her life with her boyfriend Luke before they attend colleges on opposite sides of the country.

Hannah’s entire life is based around her families faith. But when she unexpectedly finds Luke unconscious in his car in front of her house, this may be the thing that finally brings the best friends back together. Or is it possible it will tear them even further apart?

I loved the character of Emory. She is confident and knows what she wants out of life. My favorite part was that she has been writing down quotes from Luke every day since they met. I past this on to my daughter who is in a similar situation and she loved the idea!
I love how vulnerable Emory becomes when you finally learn about what started the fight between her and Hannah. I thoroughly enjoyed the Our Town scenes and wanted to see the play in person.

Luke becomes a pivotal character when he loses consciousness and almost dies after a football injury. He becomes the glue that will begin to form the friendship again between Emory and Hannah.  He became my favorite character as he himself also become vulnerable and completely open about what has happened to him.  I enjoyed his honesty and realism in dealing with his situation.

Hannah started out all about her faith and her beliefs. And as things begin to happen she starts to question everything. And as painful as it is to read her going through all of this – it was raw, real and poignant.  The series of events that leads you to finally find out what the fight was about is riveting. I could not put the book down as I wanted to know what was going to happen next and if Hannah and Emory ever return to their friendship.

A wonderful coming of age book, dealing with religion, teenage turmoil, and the unpredictably of friendship.  This will be a book that I will have my teenage daughter read – as it deals with many things teenagers face during their lives. And it deals with them in such a way that benefits each one that is dealing with their own situations. Highly recommend for an amazing summer read!

Fair Game by Taylor Lunsford – a Review

Description:
In her designer shoes and power suits, Vivien Monroe couldn’t be more out of place in the video game company she inherited from her eccentric father. Not only does she have to sort out her father’s last request and deal with a younger sister she barely knows, she has to go toe-to-toe with her father’s protégé—a man who makes her think about the last thing she should be thinking about right now.

With his thick-framed glasses and graphic tees, Liam Bennett is the exact opposite of what she needs right now. His relaxed, out-of-the-box attitude reminds her too much of her father’s more exasperating quirks, but his dedication and quiet stubbornness begin to drive her crazy in a completely different way.

All Vivien wants is to get back to her life in New York, but someone is stealing the company’s best game ideas, and an FBI agent is sniffing around. She’ll save her father’s legacy for her sister and then she’s out of there—if she can leave Liam behind

Review:

Vivian Monroe couldn’t be more out of place at MT Gaming if she tried. Returning home to Texas was not her choice. Her estranged father has recently passed away and she has inherited the CEO position at his computer gaming company. She leaves her high powered New York job where she is dead set on making partner, to take care of business in Texas. As the majority shareholder and acting CEO she must decide who will take over the company when she returns to New York. But she didn’t bargain for “nerdboy” Liam Bennett, VP of Game Development.  Liam was made for this company, he lives and breathes it.  Upon Vivian’s return she realizes that something isn’t right. Someone is stealing the plans for future games and leaking them to competitive companies.

All Vivian wants is to make her decision and return to New York, return to the life that she knows and is good at.  But when she finds out that the company is being investigated she feels that it would be best to stick around and not turn over the company to anyone, just yet. But sparks fly between her and Liam and there is no way she can deny her feelings for him. But she makes it crystal clear that their relationship is strictly casual, no strings attached.

Vivian is strong-willed all business Ice Queen.  She has no time for family, relationships or anything in between. But she is thrown into a world she long ran away from. Her younger sister Greer, her fathers company – the world she couldn’t wait to get away from. She has come to Texas to pick her successor and move on. But when she meets the Vice President of Game Development everything changes. And as much as she wants to just get back home to New York. Her heart begins to betray her and pull her the one thing she isn,t ready for, Liam.

Liam Bennett is a wonderful “nerdy” video game developer. He is sweet, kind and loyal to a fault.

He speaks with his momma every day and takes his dog Flynn to work with him every day! What is not to love about this guy! I found him sweet, considerate and very relatable. And he isn’t afraid to turn up the heat when he needs to.

I enjoyed the sub-characters of Greer and Eli, and hope that their book is next. I would also love to follow along more with Vivian and Liam in their next chapter of the life. Fair Game by Taylor Lunsford is a wonderful, steamy, sexy, adorkabe read!

Looking for Dei by David A. Willson – a Review

Description:
Fifteen-year-old Nara Dall has never liked secrets. Yet it seems that her life has been filled with them, from the ugly scar on her back to the strange powers she possesses. Her mysterious father refuses to say anything about her origins, and soon, she and her best friend must attend the announcement ceremony, in which youths are tested for a magical gift.

A gifted youth has not been announced in the poor village of Dimmitt for decades. When Nara uncovers the reason, she uses her own powers to make things right. The decision sets her on a path of danger, discovery, and a search for the divine. In the process, she learns the truth about herself and uncovers the biggest secret of all: the power of broken people.

Review:

Looking for Dei is the debut novel by David A. Willson.  The story takes place in the Great Land.  Fifteen year old Nara Dall lives in the small town of Dimmit, on the Southeastern corner of the Great Land.  She was raised by Bylo, the only man she has known as a father.   Nara knows she is different from other girls; the scars on her back prove that.  And she has special powers, magic.   She can do things others can not.  And because of that,  Bylo has instructed her to keep her gifts hidden from everyone -that includes her best friend Mykel.  The Great Land consists of the gifted people (those with magical powers), regular people and the cursed.  The gifted consists of a bear – which has magical strength, a knitter – which is a magical healer, a watcher – a great hunter that with vision would detect animals far away and help feed others, and a harvester – a collector of magic for others to use. You are considered blessed if you held two or more of the gifted powers.   Then there was the cursed – the cursed would be put to death right away as they were an affront to the church.  Every few years an announcement ceremony is performed.  Children who recently entered adolescence would partake in the ceremony.  During this ceremony they would find out their destiny.  This year’s ceremony would turn out quite different than expected and have traumatic and life changing results.  The results would mean that Bylo, Nara and Mykell would need to leave Dimmit in a hurry.   Once on the run Mykel finds out about Nara’s magical powers – of which he has always known her to be special.  And Mykel has come into some magical powers all of his own.  But neither of them knows if they are the good or bad kind of power.  From here they encounter an old woman named Anne, who claims to want to help them on their journey and Gwyn, a watcher who has tracked and found the scarred girl she has been looking for.  Gwyn was hired to find Nara and bring her to Minister Vorick, a blessed and powerful man.  But he has his own reasons for seeking her out.  He knows she is not like any other.  And he must have her for his own selfish reasons.  But will Nara willing help him?  Or will she use all of her powers to defeat the minister?

Nara isn’t a typical teenager.  She knows she is different.  She has a horrific scar on her back to prove it.  And her bright red hair makes her stand out in a crowd.  She knows she harbors magic powers and has always had to keep them hidden from everyone.  But she is strong.  And all she wants is  to help others and to take care of those in need.  I truly enjoyed her character.  She is stubborn, but with such a goodness in her heart that her intentions are always for the good.  She embraces her magic and as we watch her grow and come into her own it is truly brilliant.

Mykel is also scarred with a birth defect, which I believe is why he is such a good friend to Nara. He truly loves her and would do anything for her.  But when Nara saves his life it has earth shattering results.  The consequences is that it will change both of their lives dramatically.  I loved how he cared about his little brother, took care of him, and watched out for him even though his brother could take care of himself for the most part.  He stood beside Nara and care for her with true love and kindness. They both make is very easy to fall for them and want only the best for them.

The story is written in magic.  Magic, runes, ancient manuscripts, and hereos are just a few of the wonders awaiting.  The author immerses you within the Great Land and he paints a portrait of the world around you.  I have sometimes struggled with books that portray other lands as I sometimes can not grasp the world being painted.  But this was not the case. This story is beautifully written and the landscape painted before you like a portrait that you want to step into. As the story unfolds you realize that we have only started on this journey.  I look forward to continuing with this series and with this author.

Beautifully written and magic abounds.  If you are a fan of fantasy and magic this book, this series will pull you in and take you on a magical ride.  Highly recommend.
