Description:
Nell Ingram draws her powers from deep in the earth, and uses them to help Psy-LED, the Psychometric Law Enforcement Division, which solves paranormal crimes. When a local vampire calls to report a dead body on her compound, Nell knows she and her team have to be ready for anything.

But the dead body is just the beginning of a mystery that involves supernaturals of all kinds, including some of the most powerful vampires in the country. As Nell gets closer to the truth, she begins to understand that the perpetrator is tracking her too—and that there is something personal about this crime. Something with roots that go almost as deep as those in Soulwood.

Review:

Rift in the Soul by Faith Hunter is the 6th book in her terrific Soulwood series.  Brief refresher: Nell Ingram is a member of PsyLed (Unit Eighteen), a Homeland Security division that investigates paranormal cases and is based in Knoxville, TN, close to Soulwood.  The PsyLed team is made up of witches, werewolves, empaths and Nell fits right in with her Soulwood powers; they make a great team, as they are all very likeable (Occam, Ayatas, T-Laine, JoJo, Tandy & Rick). Nell has really come into her own, as she is a powerful woman controlling her Soulwood land and plants.

Rift in the Soul begins with Nell summoned by the Master of the City, vampire Ming of Glass, reporting a dead body; both Ayatas and Rick also respond, making sure to protect Nell. Ming tries to get Nell to kill a powerful and ancient vampire, who plans to destroy everything.  Nell senses things are not right, with Ming and her team; soon after, an attack destroys Ming’s home by the ancient vampire, who is searching for the Blood Tarot.  While on the site, both Nell and Occam find the Blood Tarot, which is now hidden at PsyLed.

In a short time, Nell learns that the perpetrator, has a demon inside him, making things even more dangerous.  All of the PsyLed team join Nell at Soulwood, where attacks are at full force; with Nell’s magical connection to the land, fighting off the vampires. We learn so much more about Nell’s family, and how her powers in the land continue to grow. I really love how her younger sister, Mud is also gaining powers as a plant-woman, throughout Soulwood’s land.  We get to see Esther, who recently divorced, and has two babies, now living in Soulwood, and is also gaining powers. Nell, her family and PsyLed friends do everything in their power to stop the baddies.

While all this is ongoing, the whole family is in the process of preparing Nell’s wedding to Occam (her cat man). I loved how much the relationship between and Occam and Nell became totally filled with deep love.  Though Jane Yellowrock (she is the Dark Queen), is not fully part of the story line, there were so many mentions of her; especially with her on her honeymoon, as well as her approving many issues to help.

What follows is an intense, exciting, gripping and violent story.  Rift in the Soul is another fabulous addition to this series, as it is non-stop action, suspenseful and intense..  The last half of the book was an edge of your seat thriller, and Nell was totally amazing stepping up in a wild and fantastic ride to the climax. We are used to Faith Hunter always having a fantastic group of characters, an amazing heroine in her series. Nell is a great heroine, and in this book, she evolves to be even more powerful.  I loved her sisters joining together to fight the evil. The epilogue was wonderful, as we get to see Nell marry Occam, with everyone there.  Faith Hunter has once again given us a fantastic story, with so many emotions throughout.

Final Heir by Faith Hunter – a Review

Final Heir by Faith Hunter – Review & Excerpt

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Jane Yellowrock is the queen of the vampires, and that makes her a target as she fights to maintain control and keep peace in the city of New Orleans. She has enemies at every turn, because vampires live forever, and they keep their grudges alive with them. That includes the Heir, the vampire sire of the Pellissier bloodline, which gave rise to Leo Pellissier himself—Jane’s old boss and the former master of the city.

With the Heir and all the forces of darkness he can muster arrayed against her, Jane will need all the help she can get. She’ll find it in her city, her friends, her found family, and, of course, the Beast inside of her.

Review:

Final Heir by Faith Hunter is the 15th and final book in her fantastic Jane Yellowrock series.  I have said previously, this series just keeps on getting better and better, and Final Heir was the best one yet.  Sad to say, this is the final book for Jane Yellowrock, and I will miss her and the gang terribly.  Hopefully, Faith will give us some snippets of Jane in any upcoming books.

Jane is the Dark Queen of the vampires, and she always has to fight the evil villains, as she has many enemies that target her.   In Final Heir, she must face another of the Sons of Darkness, who is the Heir (from Pellissier bloodline), determined to kill her, and take over all of New Orleans. When a surprise attack in New Orleans happens, Jane and her team (Bruiser, Eli, Alex, Brute, Koun, Quint, Wrasser,Molly and Angie, etc), must join the battle when the Heir brings his evil witches to destroy the Null house, which holds the heart of the last Heir, and they will stop at nothing to get it.  I love how Jane’s team, besides Bruiser, Eli, Alex and Wrassler has grown into a fascinating security team that we met in the previous book (Koun, Quint, Thelma, Kojo, Brute, etc). In Final Heir, with evil in full force, she has a great team to join her in fighting the enemies.

From start to finish, the story is action-packed, constant danger, deaths, violence, blood and surprises along the way, as I held my breath many times in fear of losing our favorites. What follows is an exciting, intense, action-packed thriller, with Jane and team in constant danger, as they are facing probably the most powerful evil enemy.  Jane always flies by the seat of her pants, but now she has her team and those who have sworn loyalty to her.  I will miss so many of the wonderful characters that have over time added to the 15 books of this series.  I loved Jane, Beast and the core, Eli, Alex, Molly, Angie (love her), Leo, Gee, Edmond, just to name a few.

Final Heir was a fantastic finale to the Jane Yellowrock series, which I will sadly miss. Thank you, Faith Hunter for a wonderful 13 years and 15 books, with a fantastic heroine in Jane Yellowrock.  Please please give us more; in whatever you have planned, especially with Angie. For those of you who have not read this series (which you need to start at the beginning), you are missing a great series, a super wonderful bad-ass heroine in Jane Yellowrock.

                                 Chapter 1

Like a Stray Animal
Haunting Aggie’s Home

Eyes closed, I felt the movement of unexpected cool air as the sweathouse door opened and shut. Last week, I had learned that Aggie One Feather, the Cherokee elder leading me into understanding my personal and tribal history, sometimes left and reentered when I was sweating through a haze of her herbal infusions and my own hidden memories. She said humans couldn’t survive five or six hours in a sweathouse like I could, let alone all night, so she would slip out and back in.

I had asked her if she had a nanny camera hidden in the sweathouse to keep track of me. Her reply had made me laugh: “You need a legion of angels to look over you, but a nanny cam could help.”

The rustling of her cotton shift, the sound of her breath, and the crackle of flames seemed loud as she settled across the fire from me and fed the coals. I smelled cedar and burning herbs and heard the scritch-grind of her mortar and pestle. Behind my lids it seemed lighter than before. It had to be near dawn.

It occurred to me that the ceremonial fire was, itself, symbolic. It was parts of this world and the next, the two halves of the universe, energy and matter. It was wood and air and energy, and together they made flame and smoke, the destruction of matter into energy. Then that thought wisped away with the fire.

Aggie said, “Drink.”

I opened my eyes against the crack and burn of dried sweat, and studied the small pottery cup she held. On the third try I managed to croak, “Eye of newt? Ragweed? Mold off your bathroom floor? Peyote?”

“That never gets old,” she lied, amusement hidden in her gaze. “I have no mold on my bathroom floor.”

Which meant the liquid could be composed of the other three. Or not. I took the cup and drained it. The decoction tasted of lemon peel, fennel, wild ginger, something I couldn’t identify, and salt. I turned the empty, handleless cup in my fingers. It wasn’t traditional Cherokee work, but something fired in a modern kiln and given a bright blue glaze.

“What did your dreams show you?” Aggie asked.

I handed back the cup and said, “Same as last time. The angel’s location looks a little like my soul home. Walls that curve in toward the ceiling, dark streaks of water on them. Wings that seem to lie flat across the ceiling and down, as if dripping to the floor. Light that comes from nowhere and everywhere. There might have been a puddle of blood on the floor. Hard to tell. But unlike my soul home, I keep seeing people standing along the walls.”

“People or other angels?”

I frowned at the question. Had there been wings behind the people? “Maybe. Maybe a suggestion of wings, like shadows. Or maybe I just want to have seen that and so I remember it now.”

“Did you see yourself in your dream-state?”

If I watched myself, as opposed to being an active part of the dream, that would tell her a lot about whether this was a vision teaching me about myself and my life path, a prophetic dream portending something about the future, or if it had been a memory. I closed my eyes again and pulled at the fragments. The angel’s wings draped, so much larger, longer than in artwork depicting the messenger beings. I heard the faint drip of water, but the echo was different from the usual loud reverberations of my soul home. This place itself was subtly different from previous visions.

In the memory of my vision, I saw myself. My hair was braided into a fighting queue and I was dressed in armor, one of the latest models Eli, my brother of choice, bought these days, now that money wasn’t an object. In teaching visions, I usually wore tribal clothing, the kind my father had worn when I was a child.

In addition to the armor, at my waist I was wearing the Mughal blade that Bruiser had given me.

That was interesting.

In the dream-state I did nothing, said nothing, so it probably wasn’t a vision teaching me about who I was or guiding my path through life. Seeing myself meant it wasn’t a memory. The ancient knife itself was part of a prophecy, and I seldom wore it, mostly for ceremonial occasions when the prophecy did me no good. Only rarely had I worn it into battle.

When he gave the blade to me, Bruiser had said, “A certain wily salesman suggested that the damascene blade is charged with a spell of life force, to give the wielder the ability to block any opponent’s death cut. Pure balderdash, but it makes a nice tale.” Except that Alex, the tech-genius of Yellowrock Securities and Clan Yellowrock, had traced the blade back to the seventeen hundreds, and there were stories over the centuries about people surviving the death stroke of an opponent’s blade.

“Prophecy?” I asked the universe. Or God, if he was listening. Not that anyone answered, not even Aggie. And since I hadn’t looked for the future in rain droplets in months, I might not know what this meant until it was too late. However, if I went searching for the meaning in the future, I probably wouldn’t understand it anyway, and if I saw danger-and I would-I might feel forced to meddle in time. Meddling in time-timewalking, time-jumping- might trigger the return of the magic cancer. All of which was why I hadn’t tried. Seeing the future was like that. Helpful. Until it wasn’t. And then it tried to kill me.

I inhaled and caught a familiar scent. He had to be close because I was human-shaped, and my nose in this form was unspectacular. I cleared my throat again and warned, “Werewolf.”

Review:

Of Claws and Fangs by Faith Hunter is a collection of her shorter books (Jane Yellowrock/Soulwood), some which were on her site.  I am a big fan of all of Faith Hunter’s books, and I looked forward to reading these stories that I may have missed from her site, or I did not remember.  Happy to say I loved reading these stories.

True Dead (Jane Yellowrock) by Faith Hunter – a Review

True Dead (Jane Yellowrock) by Faith Hunter – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Jane used to hunt vampires, but now she’s their queen. She’s holed up in the mountains with the Yellowrock Clan, enjoying a little peace, when a surprise attack on her people proves that trouble is brewing. Someone is using very old magic to launch a bid for power, and it’s all tied to the place where Jane was first drawn into the world of Leo Pellissier—the city of New Orleans.

Jane is compelled to return to NOLA because someone is trying to destabilize the paranormal world order. And because she now sits near the top of the vampire world, the assault is her problem. She will do what she must to protect what’s hers. Her city. Her people. Her power. Her crown.

Review:

True Dead by Faith Hunter is the 14th book in her fantastic Jane Yellowrock series.  As I have said previously, this series just keeps on getting better and better. I had previously noted that the last two books were the best in the series, and now I have to say True Dead is also a fantastic read. I pray Faith will continue giving us these great stories on our fabulous Jane Yellowrock.

When we last left off, Jane had just recovered from her cancer battle, but she continues to have issues with her shifting (with Beast), and never knows what she will look like each time.  When a surprise attack in New Orleans happens, Jane and her team (Bruiser, Eli, Alex, Brute) know it is time to return to NOLA, as a powerful magical evil is bent on eliminating Jane, and take control of the paranormal world.  Jane had already made plans to return to NOLA, since she was attending Wrassler and Jodi’s wedding.

As the Dark Queen, Jane has always been the one who would step forward and defeat the enemy. In True Dead, things are slowly changing, as Jane now has added security to protect her, not to mention help in defeating their enemies.  I have to say I loved all these new people, who are there for Jane, such as Koun, Quint, Thelma, Kojo, and Brute played a big part. She is after all the Queen, and with evil once again coming for her, the extended team is up for the task, and will protect her with everything they have. Jane does need to get used to others fighting with/or for her.  An amazing group…love them.

From start to finish, the story is action-packed, constant danger, deaths, and surprises along the way (someone you may have been waiting for).  There are a few times I held my breath that we would lose one of our favorites.  I loved Beast even more, as she pushes Jane aside to come forth and fight; and the banter between them is fun, as they are now fully one; stronger, better, smarter and unbeatable.  Jane’s brother does come forth to help her battle a surprising enemy within the family.

What follows is an exciting, intense, action-packed thriller, with Jane and team in constant danger, especially from those who have taken the side of the enemy.  She, Beast, Eli, Bruiser, Alex and the rest of their extended team, will need to use all those who have sworn loyalty to Jane, as well as other help, such as the Aya, Mithrans, Arcenniels, Infermieri, just to name a few. To tell too much more would ruin this for you, and this must be read to see some of those surprises.

True Dead was another fantastic addition to the Jane Yellowrock series.  I was thrilled with all the changes and new characters, as well as excited to see where Faith Hunter will take us next. For those of you who have not read this series (which you need to start at the beginning), you are missing a great series, a super wonderful bad-ass heroine in Jane Yellowrock, and author who kills it (& us) every time.

Review:

Bound Into Darkness by Faith Hunter
Bound into Darkness takes place between the last two novels in Hunter’s Jane Yellowrock series; the story revolves around Eli Younger and Liz Everhardt. Liz has had a crush on Eli for a while, but after she was seriously injured, she has been in recovery and Eli has not been around.  When Liz gets a call for help to find a missing dog, she asks Eli to help her.   They head to the steep and dark mountain, looking for the dog, only to find Liz encountering a skeletal demon, who comes to life and wanting to possess her.  Liz manages to escape, with Eli’s help and together they build a hedge circle, but time is of essence, as the demon is trying to break through.  To make matters work, a group of rogue werewolves are on the way to kill them.  The question is:  who set this trap to have Liz killed and why?

What follows is an exciting, tense novella that kept my attention from start to finish.  The last half of the book was amazing, as we got to see many of our favorites try to rescue Eli and Liz; including Jane, Cia (Liz’s twin sister, also a witch), Alex, Brute, Lincoln, just to name a few.  We also learn who was behind this trap, which also gets explained more in the next short story; Ties That Bind. I really loved this new addition to the Jane Yellowrock series.

The Ties that Bind by Faith Hunter
Bedelia is the mother of Liz and Cia Everhardt, and she senses something is happening.  Linc Shadrock, who fathered her children, and whom she has not seen in many years, once he became the Master of his territory. When he visits Bedelia late night, he explains about the woman who is threatening to kill her daughters. The Mayhew witches blame Liz for killing one of their own, and they were behind the current attack.  Linc needs Bedelia’s help before he leaves to help save his daughters, with the help of Jane Yellowrock and team.

Bedelia agrees to call in her witch friends, who had set up a circle from years before, and try to trap the Mayhew leader.  Once the ladies arrive at the circle and set up the trap, they find themselves under attack by both witches and werewolves.

I enjoyed seeing how Linc loved Bedelia, and explained that he still loved her.  That was a nice addition.  Great short story.

Spells for the Dead by Faith Hunter – a Review

Spells for the Dead by Faith Hunter – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Nell Ingram is a rookie PsyLed agent, using the powers she can channel from deep within the earth to solve paranormal crimes. Together with her team, she’s taken on the darkest magic and the direst foes. But she’ll need to tap into every ounce of power she has for her newest case.

Nell is called to the Tennessee mansion of a country music star and finds a disturbing scene–dead bodies rapidly decaying before everyone’s eyes. The witch on her team, T. Laine, knows this can only be one thing: death magic, a rare type of craft used to steal life forces. PsyLed needs to find this lethal killer fast. But when a paranormal-hating FBI agent tries to derail the investigation, they find themselves under attack from all sides.

Review:

Spells for the Dead by Faith Hunter is the 5th book in her fabulous Soulwood series. Brief refresher: Nell Ingram is a member of PsyLed (Unit Eighteen), a Homeland Security division that investigates paranormal cases and is based in Knoxville, TN, close to Soulwood.  The PsyLed team is made up of witches, werewolves, empaths and Nell fits right in with her Soulwood powers; they make a great team, as they are all very likeable (Occam, T-Laine, JoJo, Tandy & Rick).

Nell is now a full-fledged agent of PsyLed; though she is considered a rookie.  Nell and T. Laine are the first called to a Tennessee mansion, belonging to a famous music country star.  The scene is horrific, as not only are there many people dead slowly decaying, but everything surrounding them (objects, clothes, house, grounds, etc.)  is also disintegrating.  A powerful death magic is in effect, and anyone who comes close or touches things will slowly decompose and die.  The whole team (with the exception of Rick until later in the book) comes together to try to figure out who and why this is happening at the Mansion, and other places that have some sort of connection to the country music star.  We get to know more about, Ayatas Firewind (Firewind), who is the regional director (also Jane Yellowrocks’s brother and Rick’s boss), as he plays a major part of this story.

What follows is an intense, exciting, gripping and violent story, where Nell and team become immersed into stopping the person behind these horrible deaths.  The PysLed team spend a lot of time at many sites, investigating, and getting help from various covens to try to contain the “death and decay” from spreading further. In the early part of the story, Hunter gives us a lot of details, which slows things a bit.

I loved how Nell continues grow as she utilizes more of her earth powers, and especially the bond she has with her teammates, which continues to build as they are all in danger.  An added element to the story was Nell and her relationship with her two sisters, Mud who moved in with her previously and now Esther, who is getting divorced and moves in with Nell and Mud.  It was fun to see Nell give Esther advice how to get her dowry back and build her own home on Nell’s land.

Most of all I loved how her relationship with Occam (a werecat) progresses to a full-blown romance, with their chemistry sizzling.  They are great together and I look forward to when they solidify their relationship, as well as Occam becoming part of the family. I also loved how Nell and Firewind respected each other, and their bantering was fun.

Spells for the Dead is another fabulous addition to this series, as it is action-packed, suspenseful, exciting, with a violent dangerous death magic that destroys so many people and land. The last half of the book was an edge of your seat thriller, and Nell was totally amazing stepping up in a wild and fantastic ride to the climax. We are used to Faith Hunter always having a fantastic group of characters, an amazing heroine in her series. This is a difficult review to write, as there are so many details, as well as horrible ‘death and decay’ throughout the entire book, and to say too much would be spoilers.   Nell is a great heroine, and in this book, she evolves to be even more powerful. Faith Hunter has once again given us a fantastic story, with so many emotions throughout.

With nowhere to run and her body failing, the rogue-vampire hunter and her inner Beast must discover a way to defeat this new threat, and find a form that gives her a chance to fight another day.

Review:

Shattered Bonds by Faith Hunter is the 13th book in her fantastic Jane Yellowrock series.   I could not wait to get my hands on this book, as the last book left us breathless and in a state of waiting impatiently for the next book. As I had noted in my review of Dark Queen, that was the best book in this series; being hard to equal that, Shattered Bonds was still an epic story.  I love this series and Jane Yellowrock always rocks.

Shattered Bonds picks up a short time after Dark Queen left off.  Jane is still sick, with a cancerous tumor that is killing her; she has pulled herself away from responsibilities of her being the Dark Queen but those that are part of her family, Eli, Alex, Brute and Bruiser have moved up to the mountains to be near her and help keep things regarding her responsibilities going.  Jane spends a lot of time in her Beast form, which also helps alleviate the pain.  But an ancient enemy rises to force Jane to resume her title of Dark Queen in order to save those she loves.

Her Primo, Edmund has been kidnapped by another evil powerful Son of Darkness (she killed the older and powerful brother in the previous book) and he is also kidnapping and torturing others.  When she gathers her team to stand up to the villain, she manages to save Edmund, but that is only short lived.  The Son of Darkness has abilities that even Jane can’t stop, and she needs help from the Everhardts (Molly, Evan, Angie and the coven of witches) to fight the enemy.

What follows is an exciting, intense, action-packed thriller from start to finish.  Jane must rise above her disabling condition to use all of her powerful Skinwalker and Dark Queen abilities, to stand up and fight an unbeatable enemy.   She and Beast will need to use everyone, including her team, angels, arcenniels, witches, vampires, and her past history to survive.

It is always great to spend time with Jane’s fantastic team, many of whom we have come to love.  I love Eli, who is wonderful as Jane’s strong and loyal second;  Alex, the techie, has matured and is also great; Bruiser, Jane’s love interest, whom I have come to love; Edmund, Jane’s Primo; Molly, her best friend, who is a powerful witch; Brute, the wolf who can’t shift; plus many more we continue to meet. Of course, I adore Beast, and especially now they are fully one; stronger, better, smarter, and unbeatable.

Shattered Bonds was another fantastic addition to the Jane Yellowrock series.    I am excited and look forward to seeing where Faith Hunter will take us next. For those of you who have not read this series (which you need to start at the beginning), you are missing a great series, a super wonderful bad-ass heroine in Jane Yellowrock, and author who kills it (& us) every time.
