Description:
Nell can draw magic from the land around her, and lately she’s been using it to help the Psy-Law Enforcement Division, which solves paranormal crimes. Joining the team at PsyLED has allowed her to learn more about her powers and the world she always shunned–and to find true friends.

Head agent Rick LaFleur shifts into a panther when the moon calls him, but this time, something has gone wrong. Rick calls Nell from a riverbank–he’s naked, with no memory of how he came to be there, and there’s a dead black cat, sacrificed in a witch circle and killed by black magic, lying next to him.

Then more animals turn up dead, and team rushes to investigate. A blood-witch is out to kill. But when it seems as if their leader is involved in the crime, the bonds that hold the team together could shatter at any moment.

Review:

Circle of the Moon by Faith Hunter is the 4th book in her urban fantasy Soulwood series.  I am a big fan of Faith Hunter, especially for her fantastic Jane Yellowrock series, and I have really enjoyed the Soulwood series. In Circle of Moon, Hunter has given us the best one yet in this series.

Warning: If you read the Jane Yellowrock series, and have not read Dark Queen, you should read that first before starting Circle of the Moon, as there are spoilers.

Nell Ingram is our heroine, and in Circle of the Moon, she becomes more confident and independent in using her powers.  Nell is a member  (probie)of PsyLed (Unit Eighteen),  a Homeland Security division that investigates paranormal cases and is based in Knoxville, TN, close to Soulwood.  The PsyLed team is made up of witches, werewolves, empaths and Nell fits right in with her Soulwood powers; they make a great team, as they are all very likeable (Occam, T-Laine, JoJo, Tandy, Rick and  Soul, who has a small part in this book, probably due to her time in Dark Queen).

Nell and team are called into an unusual case involving witch circles and dead animals.  Rick, who has had his own issues for awhile, is being pulled in to the spell.  The team work together to help Rick, and to find out who and why these dangerous blood spells are being used.   While Nell spends a lot of hours at the team quarters, she is also in the middle of getting custody and protecting her younger sister, Mud; upgrading her house with more modern things, including air conditioning, and her slow burn evolving relationship with Occam.

What follows is an intense, exciting, gripping and violent story, where team Nell and team become immersed into stopping the sorcerer who is becoming all too powerful, which threatens everyone and everything .  With Rick being unable to stop from being pulled to the circle, the team forces his cat into to a cage to protect him.  The last half of the book was an edge of your seat thriller, and Nell was totally amazing stepping up in a wild and fantastic ride to the climax.  Nell’s powers grow, but I loved her bond with her teammates, and how close they have become.

Circle of the Moon is a fabulous addition to this series, as it is action-packed, suspenseful, exciting and dangerous death defying situations; with a fantastic group of characters and an amazing heroine.  This is not an easy review to write, as telling too much more would be spoilers.  There are a lot more characters we get to meet; vampires, witches, agents, etc.  Nell is a great heroine, and continues to get better in each book.  I for one cannot wait for the next book in this wonderful series. Faith Hunter has once again given us a fantastic story, with so many emotions throughout.  I still cannot get over the feelings and emotions from Dark Queen.  Hunter is an amazing writer.

Dark Queen by Faith Hunter – a Review

Dark Queen by Faith Hunter – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
As Enforcer to the vampire Master of the City of New Orleans, Jane Yellowrock stakes her reputation and her life on keeping her territory safe. But Leo has been issued a blood challenge by the emperor of the European vampires, who seeks to usurp all of his power and possessions. If Leo loses the match to the death, the city will be forfeit, and the people of New Orleans will suffer the consequences. Jane can’t let that happen.

Preparing for the duel requires all of Jane’s focus, but with so much supernatural power in play, nothing goes according to plan. She has to rely on herself and the very few people she knows she can trust to stand and fight. Only two things are guaranteed: nothing is sacred, and no one is safe.

Review:

Dark Queen by Faith Hunter is the 12th book in her fantastic Jane Yellowrock series.  Wow..Dark Queen was an incredible emotional rollercoaster of ride. At the end of everyone of the 12 book in this series, I have noted that each book gets better and better.  Dark Queen takes this even further, as it enthralled me from the start, and shattered my heart so many times.  With saying that, it is no doubt that Dark Queen is the best book in the Jane Yellowrock series.  Faith…I am in awe how you pulled me in and never let go, even to the final moment.

Dark Queen picks up a short time after the previous book ended, as Jane, her team and the Master of the City’s team prepares for the upcoming battle with the European Vampires.  With days remaining before the battle for rule of Europe and America, Jane is in the middle of major security preparations. They all know that if Leo and his team lose, it will be the death of so many, as the Europeans would assume control, and kill everyone working for Leo.   Jane, Eli and Alex are in the middle of some pre meeting attacks that are attempts to hurt and destroy the American team, which warns of betrayals to Leo, the Master of the City; including former friends, dangerous witch and enemies.

Jane also finds herself in a personal issue, as someone from her past arrives throwing her for a loop.  She must reconcile the possibility of this being real, or just someone using her.  This was an interesting development that we probably will explore in the future.   I loved how Beast continued to play a big part sharing the battles with Jane. I got a kick out of Eli becoming closer to Beast, which was a short release from all the tension.

Closer to the halfway point, Leo calls a meeting of all his clans and staff; to complete the preparations for the upcoming battle, as well in the event of his death.  This was an awesome meeting, which turned out to be one of the many highlights that I fully enjoyed.  Heirs were named, Clans tightened, and a new clan created…Clan Yellowrock.  I loved seeing all the new members of Jane’s clan that she added, in order to be their protector.  I loved this part so much, that I went back three times to read it again, as well as the final 1/3 of the book.

When the story moves to the battle of the Leo and Titus, the tension rises and there are no breaks along the way.  It was totally nerve wrecking, and emotional; constant violent action, as well as horrible deaths for all sides. I could not put the book down, and forced myself to read slower for fear of what will happened next, and who will we lose.

It is always great to spend time with Jane’s continued growing team, many of whom we have come to love.  Eli has is great, as Jane’s loyal second;  Alex, the techie, who is fully coming into his own; Bruiser, Jane’s love interest, whom I have come to love; Edmund, Jane’s Primo, who is also Leo’s heir: Molly, her best friend, who is a powerful witch; Brute, the wolf who can’t shift; plus many more we continue to meet. Of course, needless to say,   I adore Beast, and especially as now they are fully one; stronger, better, smarter, and unbeatable. I loved seeing Jane begin to learn to use more of her powers, as she rises up to be a true Dark Queen.  But will that be enough to save them all?

The last half of the book is not only violent, intense action & mind boggling battles, but the emotional toll we feel from the shocks we suffer after many deaths we did not expect, as well as the fear of how much more we will lose.  As much as we have prepared ourselves over the last few books about the European vampires coming to destroy the Master of the City and take over America; Faith Hunter has taken us by surprise at how far this would go.  Jane as the Dark Queen is a fantastic heroine, and Is more powerful then she has ever been, as her and Beast were a force to reckon with.

I will not give spoilers, as this is certainly one story you need to read.  What follows is an exciting, wild, intense, action packed  adventure that has Jane, Eli, Leo, Alex, Edmund, Molly and Bruiser and so many of the secondary characters that we have known throughout the growing evolution  of this series, fighting for their lives. We have little time to breath, as one fight after another finds Jane in the middle of death defying situations.  Will Jane be able to stop the ultra powerful enemies, and save her friends?  Will Leo survive or will the European vampires succeed in their takeover attempt?

Dark Queen is a fantastic mind-boggling addition to the Jane Yellowrock series.  For those of you who have not read this series, you are missing a great series, a super wonderful bad-ass heroine in Jane Yellowrock, and author who kills it (& us) every time.   Please Faith, though you ripped my heart out, please  keep on giving us more of Jane Yellowrock. I am not ready to let her go.  Warning:  Dark Queen does end in a cliffhanger.

Flame in the Dark
Soulwood series – Book #3
by Faith Hunter
Release Date: December 5, 2017

Flame in the DarkAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Nell Ingram has always known she was different. Since she was a child, she’s been able to feel and channel ancient powers from deep within the earth. When she met Jane Yellowrock, her entire life changed, and she was recruited into PsyLED—the Homeland Security division that polices paranormals. But now her newly formed unit is about to take on its toughest case yet.

A powerful senator barely survives an assassination attempt that leaves many others dead—and the house he was visiting burns to the ground. Invisible to security cameras, the assassin literally disappears, and Nell’s team is called in. As they track a killer they know is more—or less—than human, they unravel a web of dark intrigue and malevolent motives that tests them to their limits and beyond.

Description:

Flame in the Dark by Faith Hunter is the 3rd book in her Urban Fantasy Soulwood series. Though this is a spinoff from Hunter’s wonderful Jane Yellowrock series, this is a totally different kind of storyline.

Nell Ingram is our heroine, and in Flame in the Dark, we learn more about her powers.  Nell is now a member  (probie)of Psyled, a Homeland Security division that investigates paranormal cases.  Also on the PsyLED Eighteen team are two others we know from Jane Yellowrock, Rick LeFleur and Soul.  There are werewolves, witches, empaths, and even a dragon that work together.

Nell is now a more confident and stronger person, and knows she is not human, but does not know what she is.  Nell has an ability that allows her to feel and absorb the earth’s powers, to heal her or fight off enemies. By the end of Flame in the Dark, we will know exactly what Nell is.

At the start of Flame in the Dark, the PsyLED team is called on a case where a Senator and his family have been attacked.  The team senses a paranormal element in the attacks, but cannot determine who the target is, which they originally thought was vampires.  As more attempts and murders happen, it becomes apparent that the villains are pyro’s, with the victims being burned.  Nell’s unusual ability allows her to put her hands into the earth to scent, vision or feel strange and dark vibes of something very dark and dangerous.

What follows is an intense, exciting, gripping and violent tale, where Nell will find herself in bad situations that threaten her own life.  With people dying, she will have to go above and beyond to discover who and what is causing these horrific deaths. I was so engrossed into this story, I was unable to put the book down.  Flame in the Dark was very well written by Faith Hunter.

What I also enjoyed was the team camaraderie between Nell and her team, especially as they learn more of what she is, and try to help her.   We also get to know about Nell’s younger sister, who is slowly developing the same kind of powers, which Nell wants to help her slowly learn to control.  But best of all, I loved the slow build budding romance between Occam and Nell, which we expect to become full blown in future books.

This is really a difficult review to do, as telling too much more would be spoilers.  I will say that besides being suspenseful and exciting, it was also amazing & wild to see what Nell can do.   There was so much more in this book (murder, strange fires, dark and horrific villains, and a fantastic cast of characters you enjoy the ride with), something you will need to read and find out.

Guest post-White and RedI often get asked – when you write a novel, do you start with Characters or Plot?

Every book is different, but with the Soulwood series it was character all the way! Well, that and the big question of all writers – What If?

Early on, I knew several things about Nell:
* that she would be a cult survivor
* a woman who loved a solitary existence, off the grid, in the hills near Knoxville.
* would become a member of a paranormal team of crime solvers
* that she would solve murders committed by paranormal means
After that it was a matter of deciding on each book what crime needs to be solved and what kind of paranormal creature committed the crime.

Nell—who she is, where she comes from, how she lives, who she loves—and a conflict idea for a story, or one of those unanswered “What If” questions, all have to come together for a book to work.

I always say (and please forgive the one “teachy” note in this post): Your main character has to have at least one great strength and at least one great weakness. The weaknesses make the conflict worse, the strengths and developing strengths save the main character and resolve the plot. This is called the marriage of character development and plot conflict. (End of teachy stuff.)

In Nell’s case, she is a polygamous cult survivor in a modern day alternate reality who starts out the series trusting no one and no thing, living off the grid and making a living as a farmer. She is in danger every day by the members of the cult who want her back inside so they can get her farm and who would then burn her at the stake as a witch because she is a paranormal being. Nell lives in danger. That danger and the fact that she knows so little about the modern world are her main weaknesses.

Her strengths are her individuality, her ability to adapt and survive, and her fearlessness when it comes to protecting other potential escapees from the cult. These women include her sisters, and half-sisters. Her adaptability means that when she is asked to join a law enforcement team to hunt down criminals, she is able to take her strengths and merge in to the team.

All memorable characters have these strengths and weaknesses , and if a reader analyzes the characters, each and every one will grow through the weaknesses, as well as rely on their strengths. The character becomes a friend as you read. I hope you’ll take a chance on Nell.

But there’s another danger to the city. When she hears reports of revenant vampires, loose in NOLA and out for blood, Jane goes to put them down—and discovers there’s something unusual about these revenants. They never should have risen.

Jane must test her strength against a deadly, unnatural magic beyond human understanding, and a ruthless of cadre of near-immortals whose thirst for power knows no bounds…

Review:

Cold Reign by Faith Hunter is the 11th book in her fantastic Jane Yellowrock series.  I love this series, and Jane Yellowrock is another one of my favorite kick-ass heroines.   Cold Reign picks up a short time after the previous book ended, as Jane, her team and the Master of the City’s team prepares for the upcoming arrival of the European Vampires.

Being Leo’s Enforcer, Jane once again is in the neck of things trying to stop the current attacks by revenant vampires, as well as the horrible violent storms that are happening.  In a short time, Jane will realize that these revenant vampires are different, and seem to be dead ones coming back to life.  Suspicion becomes apparent that the European vampires have been working behind the scenes to cause havoc and destruction against Leo.  The unnatural storm is also the works of witches, and magic.

What follows is an exciting, wild, intense adventure that has Jane, Eli, Alex, Edmund and Bruiser running all over New Orleans to stop the killings.  We have little time to breath, as one after another finds Jane in the middle of death defying situations.  It also becomes clear that the long thought dead European vampire leaders have planned this for a long time, and along the way, Jane will discover that there are traitors in the midst. Will Jane be able to stop the ultra powerful enemies?  Will Leo survive or will the European vampires succeed in their takeover attempt?

In between all of this non-stop action packed story, we get to spend time with Jane’s ever growing team, some of whom we have come to love.  Eli has become so great, as Jane’s second;  Alex. Eli’s brother and techie, has begun to mature more; Edmund, a ancient powerful vampire, is Jane’s Primo and is slowly becoming another favorite; I also like Brute.  Jane has evolved so much since the first book, Skinwalker.  She is much stronger, confident, and caring, and totally in sync with Beast.  I love Beast, and now they are fully one; stronger, better, smarter, and unbeatable.    It was great to see Jane open her heart and look at Eli and Alex as family, and also care about Brute, and Edmund.   I loved how her romance with Bruiser just keeps getting better and sexier; watching them both falling in love.   Just love them together.  I happily note: who needs Rick LaFleur.

Most importantly, Jane has become so much more powerful, with her own magic, and strength, as well as her stronger abilities with Beast, such as shifting much faster; her understanding and use of the gray between.  Cold Reign was another fantastic edition to the Jane Yellowrock series.  Bravo to Faith Hunter for another sensational story.

CHARACTER PROFILE
Molly Everhart Trueblood

Profile/History
Molly Meagan Everhart Trueblood— Best Friend who knows Jane is a Skinwalker. She is a powerful earth witch – her gift is herbs and growing things, healing bodies, restoring balance to nature. She has some ability as a moon witch. Also can sense dead things, like vampires asleep during the day. She used to have a guardian angel but when Molly stopped believing in angels it left.

Red hair, frizzy curls in humidity. (Molly hates her curls). Normally hair falls in ringlets down her back. Cuts it from time to time and wild red curls dance in the night breeze. Her skin is pale. She has two children – Angie Baby and EJ. Husband is Evan Trueblood (also a witch).

Molly is open-minded, tolerant, unprejudiced, and fearless. Says “Son of a witch on a stick”. Molly has a familiar—KitKit, and is pregnant in Shadow Rites.

Weapons/Magic
Sets several types of wards, including warning and protection wards, health and healing wards for children, and the Hedge of thorns ward. Wyrd Spells are in Irish Gaelic. When she creates a new spell that flunks when tested, she folds it into a paper airplane and flies it across the room. “It hasn’t flown” is slang for an untested spell.

During the series, her earth magics morph into Death Magic. She has trouble growing things, making them thrive. The woods behind the house were hit with some kind of blight, beetles or fungus or something, and they were dying and she couldn’t make them right. To Jane the new magic smells different: metallic and brittle, like heated steel and old bones. It smells like a man’s magic, though Evan’s magic was sexless, no more masculine or feminine than Molly’s or her sisters’.

Molly learns how to fight them back and how to use her earth magics again, and adds Latin to her spells.

Curse on the Land by Faith Hunter – Review & Giveaway

Curse on the Land by Faith Hunter – Review & Giveaway

Curse on the Land Banner

Curse on the LandAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM / The Book Depository

Description:
Before Nell Ingram met skinwalker Jane Yellowrock, she had no one to rely on, finding strength only in in her arcane connection to the dark woods around her. But now she has friends in the newly-formed PsyLED team to keep her grounded—even if being part of the agency responsible for policing paranormals presents dangers of its own…

After training at the PsyLED academy, Nell returns home to her woods to find the land feeling sick and restless. And that sickness is spreading. With the help of her team, under the leadership of agent Rick LaFleur, Nell tries to determine the cause. But nothing can prepare them for the evil that awaits: an entity that feeds on death itself. And it wants more…

Review:

Curse on the Land by Faith Hunter is the 2nd book in her Soulwood series. When we last left off in Blood of the Earth, Nell Ingram, our heroine, had become a member of PsyLed, as she was just starting to learn how use and learn more of her unknown powers.  Nell is a more confident person, as she was able to move from under the evil that threatened her life in the first book.  Now Nell returns home to Soulwood, after training at the Spook School and plans to rest a bit before she starts her next assignment.  But not long after she arrives home, her boss, Rick LaFleur calls her to help with a new case that is tailor made for Nell’s abilities.  When she joins her team, Nell is happy, as the members have become friends of hers, and she feels comfortable & free in her new life.   But this new case will be much worse than what she has faced before.   Seems that there are dead animals, and humans being affected by some strange and deadly fungus/parasite in the land.  Nell using her powers to feel the land,  senses something or someone very powerful causing innocent people to do strange and destructive things.

No matter that Nell can read and hear the earth, the danger is at times horrific, and she has to rely on her teammates to rescue her.  The team will find their researches will go back in time to World War 2, and the current time.  It will lead Nell and the PsyLed team to chemical firms, witchcraft and an ancient entity, but it will take Nell to put her life in danger to find a way to stop this violent powerful force.

This is a difficult review to write, as anything more would be spoilers.  There are so much scientific details written by Hunter,  that at times it blows your mind; being difficult to follow, especially, if you aren’t into many of those terms.  But Faith Hunter does a masterful job in writing this suspenseful exciting story, and has created a wonderful new heroine in Nell, who continues to grow into her powers.  By the time we come to the tense ultra exciting suspenseful last 1/3 of the book, we are holding our breaths and unable to put the book down.

There were some interesting twists that will involve Rick, Paka and others, not to mention how strong Nell seems to be getting. I cannot wait to find out more about her powers. I also enjoyed seeing Nell’s growth in allowing  herself to enjoy the attention Occam seems to be giving her.  A romance between them is surely on the horizon.   I said this before, and I haven’t changed my mind, please Faith, keep Rick here and don’t bring him back to Jane.  If you like Urban Fantasy, Paranormal, a great heroine, than you need to read this series.

Blood of the Earth by Faith Hunter – Review & Giveaway

Blood of the Earth by Faith Hunter – Review & Giveaway

Blood of the Earth Banner

Blood of the EarthAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM / The Book Depository

Description:
Set in the same world as the New York Times bestselling Jane Yellowrock novels, an all-new series starring Nell Ingram, who wields powers as old as the earth.

When Nell Ingram met skinwalker Jane Yellowrock, she was almost alone in the world, exiled by both choice and fear from the cult she was raised in, defending herself with the magic she drew from her deep connection to the forest that surrounds her.

Now, Jane has referred Nell to PsyLED, a Homeland Security agency policing paranormals, and agent Rick LaFleur has shown up at Nell’s doorstep. His appearance forces her out of her isolated life into an investigation that leads to the vampire Blood Master of Nashville.

Nell has a team—and a mission. But to find the Master’s kidnapped vassal, Nell and the PsyLED team will be forced to go deep into the heart of the very cult Nell fears, infiltrating the cult and a humans-only terrorist group before time runs out…

Review:

Blood of the Earth by Faith Hunter is the first book in her new Soulwood series.  In Blood of the Earth, Faith Hunter keeps us in the Jane Yellowrock world, as the heroine of this book is Nell Ingram, whom we met recently in a Jane Yellowrock novella.  Nell has magical powers using the earth and all the surrounding land where she lives in Soulwood.

Nell is in continuing danger by those from the local Church and the cult that runs it. She manages to keep the cult at a distance using her powers, which even she is not sure what she can do or what she is.  The PsyLED is a security agency that handles paranormals, and is headed by Rick LaFleur, the former lover of Jane Yellowrock.  Rick, having been alerted by Jane, wants Nell to join his team, especially with the investigation of kidnappings of young girls, which includes one girl belonging to the Master of Nashville Vampire Clan.  It will be Rick, and his team that will come to Nell’s rescue, when she is attacked by the Church men.  This will be the start of Nell finding a way to learn more about herself, and use her powers to good use and being part of a team, instead of always being alone.

What follows is a complex and exciting story, where Nell will slowly discover more about her powers, as well as accept who she is and to become part of a team.  Nell is truly the lead in this series, and she was a great heroine, especially as we see throughout her growing powers; her changing into a stronger and wiser person, and what she can do.  It was amazing and different to see her use those powers to fight off the nasty evil villains.  The Nell Ingram we meet at the start rises up over time to become someone to reckon with and a true member of the PsyLED team.  Besides the villains of God’s Cloud of Glory Church, there is also another group call Human Speakers for the Truth, whom is suspected of working together to kidnap the girls.  It was an interesting, and complex story, but very tense and exciting.  I loved near the end when Nell and her family, whom she had not seen much of for a long time, rebel and  bond together to fight the terrible evil being done to woman of the church.

The PsyLED team is made up of different types of paranormals, such as werecats, vampires, empaths, and other species.  Now with Nell added, it promises to be even better.  Blood of the Earth was a very good start to the Soulwood series, and I look forward to what comes next.  I will add that there were a lot of details that slowed things down somewhat, but many times the first book in a fantasy genre will have this due to introductions to the world building.  Lastly, I am not a fan of Rick LaFleur and was happy he is not with Jane; and he did not change my opinion of him in this book.  Hopefully though, he will stay here and not go back to Jane Yellowrock.  🙂  If you like Urban Fantasy, Paranormal and a great heroine in Nell, then you should read Blood of the Earth.

Description:
Slaying vampires is child’s play for skinwalker Jane Yellowrock. But handling the complicated politics of New Orleans’ supernatural players is another story…

Jane is keeping the peace between visiting groups of witches and vamps in the city, but then trouble comes knocking on her doorstep. When her house is magically attacked, the wild chase to find her assailants unearths a mystery that has literally been buried deep.

A missing master vampire, presumed long deceased, is found chained in a pit…undead, raving mad, and in the company of two human bodies. Review:

Shadow Rites by Faith Hunter is the 10th book in her wonderful Jane Yellowrock series.  After finishing this book, I can’t say enough how Faith Hunter continues evolve Jane and pull us totally into her life and her ever increasing family.

I am in love. I have always loved Jane Yellowrock, and Beast.  Now Faith has given us so many wonderful secondary characters who are part of Jane and Beast.  I love the Youngers (Eli & Alex), who are part of Yellowrock Security.  They are an awesome team. Love Jane with Bruiser. Love Edmund and all the Yellowrock clan, especially young Angie. Sigh…what are you doing to me, Faith Hunter

Shadow Rites was so exciting, emotional, tense and non-stop action all the way through; and in my opinion was best one yet.  What an awesome ride.

Jane is still recovering from her lightening shock in the last book, but it is no time to rest.  The Witch Conclave is about to start, with Leo (Master of the City) preparing to present a parley between the witches and vampires.  Jane, as Leo’s Enforcer, must make sure the security is tight, and to protect Leo. While she, and her right hand man, Eli are busy working with Leo’s people, as well as the place where the meeting will be, strange things are happening at Jane’s house.  Something magical is targeting Jane, and soon the Truebloods (Molly, Evan, Angie, little Evan ) will be arriving to help ward the house.  But nothing is easy, as everyone in the house will be in danger.  There is someone who has become very powerful and Jane begins to fear what they will be facing at the Conclave.  Eli and Alex try to investigate the trace they find of witches, and Jane sees the power coming from two witches maybe more than anyone anticipated.

Rather than tell too much more, what follows is an intensely exciting pulse pounding adventure that is non stop.  Yes, we get some romantic, sexy and fun situations with Jane and Bruiser.  We also get to spend a little time with little, Angie,  who promises to be the strongest witch of them all, when she grows up.  While we hold our breaths during each powerful attack, and fear who will survive, it is the new additions to the Yellowrock family that will make us happy.  Edmund will be added, even if Jane wasn’t thrilled, and Brute will be one of the family, too.  It is amazing how Faith Hunter gives us so much action,  pulling on our emotions that had us fearing for many lives; but she can lift our spirits to lessen the tension.  She has changed Jane and Beast so much over the 10 books, and together they are a great pair, and even more powerful then when this all started.  Leo played a bigger part in this book, and I loved some of the humor between him and Jane, not to mention when they worked together.

Shadow Rites was a mind bending thriller as we raced to the finish, unable to put the book down, as our hearts raced with deep chilling fears for our favorites.  So much has happened, and so much more to come, especially with Euro Vamps coming soon.  This is a fabulous series, with a fabulous cast of characters.  If you have not started Jane Yellowrock, you are missing a gem.  Shadow Rites was fantastic.  Thank you, Faith

Review:

Blood in Her Veins by Faith Hunter is a collection of stories, 19 to be exact, in the wonderful world of Jane Yellowrock. Of the 19 short stories, there are two new ones. If you are a fan of this series, as I am, you will love Blood in Her Veins. If you have not read this series (what are you waiting for), then it would be hard to start with this book, as you would miss so much that has happened with Jane over the years, especially with Beast; not mention those with Jane during those years, such as Molly, Angie, Rick, Bruiser, Leo, Soul, Brute. I loved the stories that are more recent years, where Eli and Alex have now become a major part of Jane Yellowrock. I love them together as a team, becoming part of Jane’s family with Beast.

I really enjoyed reading many oldies that I had previously read, and the ones I may have missed, but I loved the two new stories. Rather than give a description of all 19, I will concentrate mostly on the two new novellas, and perhaps some notes on the others.

Cat’s Tats is mostly about Rick LaFleur; Wesa is about Beast; Haints is Molly’s. In some of the others, we get to see when Bruiser decides he would fight Leo for Jane; we also get to meet Nell Ingram, who will be the main character in Faith Hunter’s new spin off series, Soulwood coming in 2016. The rest of the older stories were all Jane, with her team in exciting, tense situations that only Jane Yellowrock can solve.

Cat Fight is a new story, which has Jane, Eli, Alex being sent back to Bayou Oiseau by Leo (Master of New Orleans), to stop the witches and vampire in a war over a magic artifact. There are some powerful forces that Jane and team must face or die trying. This was a fun exciting and wild adventure, and I loved every minute of it. I also loved Edmund, whom need to learn more about whatever his secret is. Eli and Alex were also awesome.

In Bound No More, which was never published, Jane welcomes Molly and Angie to her home, after a long period where Molly didn’t talk to Jane. While waiting to attend a witch’s conclave, an unknown force attacks Jane’s house trying to hurt Molly and Angie. This too was very exciting, but also an eye opener, as we learn more about young Angie, who is destined to become a very powerful witch. I love Angie, and love how Beast adores her. It will be interesting to see where Faith will take this in the future. But for now, Angie is too young, and Molly (we also learn she has a secret that is revealed), Evan, and Jane must make sure she doesn’t use those powers until she is ready. I was very happy to see Molly and Jane make up and become friends again.

Jane Yellowrock continues to be one of the best tough kick-ass heroines in the literary world, and Faith Hunter just continues to keep us fully hooked into this fantastic series. Now that I have had a refresher, and some new tidbits; I cannot wait for the next Jane Yellowrock novel in Shadow Rites.
