Description:
For centuries, the extremely powerful and ruthless vampire witches of the European Council have wandered the Earth, controlling governments, fostering war, creating political conflict, and often leaving absolute destruction in their wake. One of the strongest of them is set to create some havoc in the city of New Orleans, and it’s definitely personal.

Jane is tasked with tracking him down. With the help of a tech wiz and an ex-Army ranger, her partners in Yellowrock Securities, she’ll have to put everything on the line, and hope it’s enough. Things are about to get real hard in the Big Easy

Review:

Dark Heir by Faith Hunter is the 9th book in her wonderful Jane Yellowrock series. I am a big fan of this series and Jane Yellowrock. Faith Hunter continues to give us wonderful exciting stories, as well as allowing us to watch Jane and Beast become stronger together. Just to refresh, Jane is a skinwalker and her other form, is Beast, a mountain lion. She is one of the best kick-assed heroines, and in this book she continues to prove how powerful and respected she is, not to mention her loyalty to her friends, and those in danger.

In Dark Heir, the Son of Darkness has escaped and the consequences are deadly, with black magic causing all kinds of havoc. He is without a doubt the most lethal villain Jane has come across thus far, and throughout the book we worry if she can survive. However, Jane is our heroine and we know that is not an issue, though she will suffer badly.

From the time the villain escapes, the action becomes pulse pounding, and dangerous for all vamps and humans, as well as Jane, who multiple times will need the help from beyond to save herself. What I love about this series is the secondary characters we have come to love. It was great to see Jane become more involved romantically with Bruiser. I love Eli and Alex, who are Jane’s partners, and they become even more solidified in this book. The humor in this intense story is always fun with the three of them. Leo is still the tough and dangerous Master of the City, but in this book he seems more willing to help Jane, as he knows the dangers she will face. Though I love Bruiser with Jane, and so happy Rick isn’t there, I still wonder what it would be like for Leo and Jane. Ahhh never happen. Lol   I have always loved her friendship with Molly, but recently and more so in this book, I am not too happy with her. I also love Brute, the werewolf who cannot shift back to human…loved the ending with them.

This was another exciting adventure, as we learn more about Jane, and the vamps. If I had to pick something to complain about, it would be that I wanted more Jane and Beast interaction, which I totally love about this series. Please Faith, give us more Jane and Beast, and more interaction with Leo. With that said, I loved Dark Heir and Faith Hunter never fails to give us another wonderful story. I am already going through withdrawal waiting for the next book.

Review:

Broken Soul by Faith Hunter is the 8th book in her wonderful Jane Yellowrock series. This is one of my favorite series that I always wait impatiently for the next book. Jane is a skinwalker, with the soul of a mountain lion as part of her. When this series started out, Beast (Jane’s other part) was a big part of Jane, but we didn’t get to see much of her. Over time, Beast has become a bit more equal with Jane, and their power together is lethal. I love Jane… I love Beast, and love listening to them talk to each other. In Broken Soul, Jane learns more from Beast the things they can do together, which makes them an awesome combo that can’t be beat.

Faith Hunter has taken us on this journey slowly through the years of watching Jane become what she is today, opening herself to family, friends, love and Beast. Best of all in this book, we finally get what we have all been waiting for. Bruiser.   I have said over the last few books, that Jane needed to dump Rick (who I do not like) and allow Bruiser into her life. Sigh…. Thank you, Faith. Read this book to find out more about Jane and Bruiser, not to mention Beast. Lol However, Leo’s reaction to Jane and Bruiser will blow your mind.

As the story starts, Jane as Leo’s (Master of the City) Enforcer, is in the midst of beefing up security in Leo’s mansion, as well as the new one being built. The European Vamps are coming soon for a visit, and they must be prepared for the possible threats on Leo’s territory. It was fun to watch Jane and other security staff practice with the top vamps how to handle swords, since the European Vamps use that weapon of choice. Unfortunately, they were unprepared for an attack from another dark source from Europe that is now in New Orleans, and puts them all in danger. We learn about the secrets Leo has kept from Jane and others, that also drew this dark group (known as Satan’s 3) to come before the arrival in a couple of months of the European Vamps. They are determined to bring down Leo, take all the secret magical items; including finding a mythical creature, L’arcenciels, a creature of light, who have dangerous abilities, which this group wants. From here on in, the adventure is non-stop action, fighting, danger, with lives lost. A very exciting, tense, pulse-pounding story that finds Jane thick in the middle, as this dark group wants her too. I will not be giving out spoilers, so you need to read this book to find out more.

Faith continually gives us wonderful new characters in this series. Eli and the Kid are now part of Jane’s team, and I love their relationship, giving us a feel of family togetherness. Derek is now training as Leo’s Enforcer, to take over from Jane, eventually. All the vamps that are part of Leo, are part of this story, which made this a lot of fun early on. One of the best parts of this story was Bruiser coming face to face with Beast. Oh I fell more in love with Bruiser. Please please Faith, keep Jane with Bruiser. Though there is a small part of me that wonders what it would be like with her and Leo. Lol

I continue to have the utmost respect for Faith Hunter. She gives us so much detail and at times complex, of Vampire history, current Vampire Politics, Mythical creatures that we remained glued to our seat in fear of missing any important information. With that said, this was also one of the most exciting books. Faith has done a marvelous job with the growth of Jane, and Beast. I cannot wait for the next book. If you have not read this series, you need to do so, as each book gets better and better.

Description:

Jane is ready to do whatever it takes to find her friend. Her desperate search leads her deep into a web of black magic and betrayal and into the dark history between vampires and witches. But the closer she draws to Molly, the closer she draws to a new enemy—one who is stranger and more powerful than any she has ever faced

Review:

Black Arts by Faith Hunter is the 7th book in her wonderful Jane Yellowrock series.  I have been a fan of this series, and Faith Hunter from the start, and Black Arts is the best one yet.  There is so much action, suspense, excitement, with a super fantastic heroine; but it is also a story that is filled with so many plots, twists and surprises along the way.

The story starts with a blast, as Jane’s house is almost literally being blown away, and Jane finds the culprit to be Evan Trueblood (Molly’s husband) using his magic abilities.  Evan, who is always suspicious of Jane, is angry, and wants Jane to let Molly come out.  But Molly isn’t there, and when Evan cools down, we learn that she is missing.  Evan and his two wonderful children, Angie Baby and EJ all come to stay with Aunt Jane, while she tries to help find Molly.  That is just the start; before long, Jane will have a few more different cases that will eventually all come together as one major one.  Between Molly having disappeared; Katie gives Jane a case to find two of her missing girls; and Leo, the Master of the City of New Orleans (MOC), has Jane in charge of security for his special “gather” event. Geez, Jane has her hands full. On top of this, she is now officially Leo’s Enforcer. Whew!

But Jane is not your everyday female.  She is a skinwalker, and if you have read my other reviews, Jane also has our wonderful mountain lion inside her……ahhh I love Beast.  Jane is smart, savvy, strong, talented, and no one can really stop her.  She can be beaten up, bloodied, heartbroken, but she always rises up to the challenge, though this will be her toughest and most dangerous assignments. There is a vampire master , who is out to kill Leo, and has strong magic helping him.  But again, he doesn’t have Jane, like Leo does.

What follows is such an exciting non stop action filled story. Jane must rely on her own personal team, Eli and Alex; as well as those she works with from Leo’s, such as Bruiser, Derek, and others we have come to know along the way.  The villains are very powerful, and the strongest one yet, who are out to get Jane, and kill Leo; some we have met before (Adrianna) and some new (Jack).  Jane finds herself stumped at times, and attacked quite a few times, but she pushes on to find her friend, Molly, who Jane fears may be too far gone to save.  The pieces of this puzzle, with so many pieces, will fall into place as we race to the exciting climax.  I was on the edge of my seat, as the major battle at the end was totally awesome and mind boggling.  It was heart stopping all the way to the end, and you did not know if any of them would survive.  Jane and Beast, use their combined powers together to fight the fight to the end against an evil so strong, the odds were against them all.

Another thing I loved about this book is that Jane is coming to terms about her past, feeling more free to open up about her not being human (a skinwalker), and if she has to, bringing out Beast.  We also learn more about Jane, especially when she sees Aggie again, and sweats out the answers, and her cute gift, Kitkat.  Romantically, I am not a fan of Ric, he has hurt her too much.  I prefer at this point Bruiser, or even Eli; though in Black Arts, there is one scene that has me opening my eyes to another long shot possibility for Jane.  LOL  We shall see.

As I said before, Faith Hunter is an awesome writer, who puts out a fantastic storyline with so much action and excitement, not to mention all the plots and details that make you wonder how she does it.  Especially when it all falls into place.  Black Arts is a wonderful addition to the Jane Yellowrock series. If you have not read it, it time for you to start.

Description:
Jane Yellowrock is a shape-shifting skinwalker who’s always up for a fight—even if it means putting her life on the line

The Master of Natchez, Mississippi has a nasty problem on his hands. Rogue vampires—those who follow the Naturaleza and believe that humans should be nothing more than prey to be hunted—are terrorizing his city. Luckily, he knows the perfect skinwalker to call in to take back the streets.

But what he doesn’t tell Jane is that there’s something different about these vamps. Something that makes them harder to kill—even for a pro like Jane. Now, her simple job has turned into a fight to stay alive…and to protect the desperately ill child left in her care

Review:

Blood Trade by Faith Hunter is the 6th book in her wonderful Jane Yellowrock series.  I have loved this series since the start, and Jane and Beast are two of my favorite characters.  For those who may not know this series, Jane is a skinwalker, and Beast, is her other soul, who is a mountain lion.

Blood Trade picks up not long after Death’s Rival left off.  Having revealed her other soul, and being a skinwalker, Jane no longer hides what she is.  But when we start, she is depressed, having lost her boyfriend Rick, angry at the betrayal of her other suitor Bruiser, and most importantly afraid of the binding of Beast to Leo, the Master of the City (MOC of New Orleans, and more).   Poor Jane, she does have a lot of reasons to be depressed.

But nothing like a case that will cure her depression.  She is off to Natchez, to meet Hieronymus, the vamp leader in that territory. In Death’s Rival, Jane and her team helped destroy the enemy, but in doing so, much of Natchez was left in ruins.  But Hieronymus needs help, as a mutate group of vampires are killing humans, and they still have their own vamps effected by the plague.   Jane brings Eli and Alex with her, as they set out to find who is behind the mutation that is also behind the disappearance of witches.

But as soon as she arrives, she meets some friends from her childhood, Misha and Bobby.  In a short time, Misha, who is writing a story about vamps, disappears, and leaves Jane a note to take care of her sick child, Charly.  Jane does not like being distracted but feels a sense of loyalty to Bobby, and Charly.  Jane will learn that Misha’s disappearance has to do with the other missing witches, and Misha, she learns is a witch.

The story can be at times difficult keeping up with all the details that Jane discovers, but the story flows, and becomes very very exciting.  I love Eli, and though I know they are like brother and sister, I so wanted him with her.  But Jane is locked into her triangle with Rick and Bruiser, though she seems to care more for Rick.  Of course Beast just happens to want both Rick and Bruiser. Lol

I adore Beast, and get a kick out of her listening, watching, and helping Jane overcome the enemy.  But one of the best parts was when Jane shifted to Beast, and Eli came face to face with Beast, a ferocious mountain lion.  I laughed when Beast walked up to Eli, showing teeth, then jumped up with paws on his shoulders..chuffing (laughing).  Very cool.

Without giving away spoilers, the last half of the book was non stop action, with Jane trying to understand the clues given to her by an old time witch.  It was fun to watch Jane & Beast work with some of the wonderful characters Faith has given us in this series.  Rick, Bruiser, Evan (miss Molly & Angie), a little of Leo; and some wonderful newer characters, such as Eli, Kid, Soul, Sylvia, just to name a few.  I really enjoyed how some things from earlier books were tied up at the end, not to mention the climatic ending.  Of course, we do not have a resolution to Bruiser and Rick. Everyone is on team Rick, but I like Bruiser.  Faith Hunter continues to give us a wonderful story, and each book opens up Jane and Beast even more. Faith, do not ever stop writing this series. If you have not read this series, it’s time to meet Jane Yellowrock and Beast.

An Interview with Faith Hunter

An Interview with Faith Hunter

The Reading Cafe is happy to have the fantastic Faith Hunter as our guest today.

Faith has just released Death’s Rival, her 5th book in her Jane Yellowrock series. Our review of Death’s Rival is just below this interview.

Faith is here to talk to us about Death’s Rival, and to tell us a bit about herself.

Let’s meet Faith.

TRC:
Hi Faith.  Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book, it is a pleasure to have you here at The Reading Café.

Would you please tell us about yourself?

Faith:  Hi. Thanks for having me here.

Well, I’m a writer with several different pen names (all of them mine, BTW) and I write in a *lot* of different genres. As Faith, I have written post-apocalyptic urban fantasy (the Rogue Mage series) and am currently writing dark urban fantasy—the Jane Yellowrock series.  Lately I’ve been writing 2 books a year, but I am getting ready to slow down on that a bit and see if I have a life left!

When I’m not writing, I am caring for elder parents and in-laws, making jewelry, target shooting, gardening bit, and white water kayaking. My hubby and I like to RV to white water rivers and paddle. I missed most of the paddling season this past summer with those elder-care issues so I am really looking forward to some fall paddling!

TRC: When and how did you become interested in writing?  What is your writing process? Do you have a specific place and time you like to write?

Faith:  I fell in love with writing in high school and decided on writing as a career when my tenth grade teacher told me I had talent. I have a writing room painted a soothing shade of bluish-green, furnished with a lovely little glass-topped wooden desk, a PC, a gas log fireplace, a dual recliner, TV, whichever of my orchids are currently blooming, and most of my collection of skulls and bones.

TRC: How did you come up with the idea of the Jane Yellowrock series?

Faith:  Tea with Kim Harrison. Seriously. We were tired and brainstorming—mostly to remember what it felt like to be purely creative. And Jane was born. 🙂

TRC: Can you please explain the premise of your Jane Yellowrock series?  Also, how many books do you plan for this series?  Hopefully this continues for a long time to come.

Faith:  Jane Yellowrock is a Cherokee Skinwalker who can shift into any similarly-massed, female animal, *if* she has sufficient DNA material. Jane is a hunter of rogue-vampires, and in Skinwalker—the first book in the series—she is hired by the Master of the City of New Orleans, Leo Pellissier, to find and dispatch a rogue-vamp who has turned on his own and started draining and eating vamps.

I am hoping for 10 to 15 books. And then spinoffs. Of course. LOL

TRC:  You just released your 5th book in the Jane Yellowrock series.  Please tell us a little about Death’s Rival.

Faith:  For Jane Yellowrock, having Leo Pellissier as a boss took some getting used to. But now, someone is out to take his place as Master Vampire of the city of New Orleans, and they’re not afraid to go through Jane to do it. After an attack that’s tantamount to a war declaration, Leo knows his rival is both powerful and vicious, but Leo’s not about to run scared. After all, he has Jane. But then, a plague strikes, one that takes down vampires but leaves humans untouched, but as carriers of the dread disease.

To uncover the identity of the vamp who wants Leo’s territory, and to find the cause of the vamp-plague, Jane will have to venture into the underbelly of vamp society, where rules were made to be broken. As she circles closer to the truth, she finds the answers to the secret that could turn every vampire in the U.S. true-dead…

TRC:  Your other series is the Rogue Mage.  Would you please tell those who have not read this series, the premise of Rogue Mage

Faith:  The end of the world came. The angels appeared and lifted swords of justice and billions of humans were judged and died in the first of the three great plagues. Then the demons appeared and brought the celestial war to Earth. The first generation of humans born after the “end of the end” were able to twist and work with left over creation energy to do something that looked a lot like magic. Afraid of what they didn’t understand, the remaining humans declared war on the teenaged mages and the seraphs put the magic users into gilded prisons called Enclaves.

Thorn St.Croix is a mage in hiding, the only of her kind living in secret among the humans. If the humans discover what she is, she will be tortured and killed. But when her ex-husband is kidnapped by the Dark, Thorn’s stepchild comes and begs her help. To keep the child happy, Thorn will brave both the Dark and the humans who hate her. But she has no idea what that decision will cost her or the world in which she lives. That’s the premise for book one – BloodRing – and the entire series.

TRC:  Many people are confused as to how to describe Urban Fantasy.  Since both of your series are Urban Fantasy, would you care to try and explain this genre?

Faith: For me it is three things:
1.
Voice. The way the authorial voice (or narrative voice) sounds and feels is called voice and tone. All Urban Fantasy has a similar contemporary voice (though each writer is distinctive within this field) .
2.
Setting. Modern, urban, technological, violent, and tough. A story where the bad guy (or the bad thing) gets what he/she/they deserve.
3.
Character. One who is modern, urban, cool, and kick ass.

TRC:  What are you working on now?

Faith: Trying to finish Blood Trade. Sigh… And I am getting behinder and behinder. (rolls eyes)

Okay. Let’s talk all things Beastly.

TRC: Beast has her own Facebook page.  How has Beast handled her popularity?

Faith: Beast is . . . preening. And enjoying the invitations to hunt in the fan’s backyards. She believes that she fully deserves all the adulation and attention. Hey. She’s a cat. Know what I mean?

TRC: *frowns and looks toward the doorway…* ‘Was that a scream I just heard?’

Faith: Ummm. Yeah. It *is* okay that I brought Beast along on the interview, right? I mean she gets pretty ticked off when I leave her behind, and she’s been left behind a lot on this blog tour.

TRC:  *eyes wide open…stutters*  Welcome Beast, I hope you ate.  But I do have two rare steaks in the refrig.

Beast:  (sits slowly and stretches out, panting) Want to hunt cow. Or Bison. Do you have cow to hunt?

TRC: Uhhh. No. But since you are here. . . Beast, you have become a big star.  How do you feel about this?

Beast:  Beast is happy as long as hunting is good. But humans who offer belly rubs are good too. Rub my belly?  (Beast rolls over, exposing her belly. She yawns hugely, showing off killing teeth). Come on. Rub. (chuffs with laughter when human backs away.)

TRC:  Beast, since you are so close to Jane, can you tell us something we don’t know about her?

Beast: Jane has no secrets except from herself. She does not remember her past. She does not remember the evil she has done. But she will remember soon. (looks at Writer) Writer knows.

TRC:  What do you think about Jane’s Rick.  Do you approve?

Beast:  Want Rick as mate. Want Bruiser as mate. And Leo. Need strong mates. Jane is foolish kit. Wants only one mate. I do not understand this.

TRC: You do complain about Writer not taking you on trips. How did you arrange to come here?

Beast:  (chuffs with laughter) Writer did not see Beast hiding in back of essuvee. Beast is good hunter. Beast is good hider. Beast is good.

TRC: Beast is there anything you would like to tell your fans.

Beast:  Fans should send Beast deer to hunt. Beast likes deer. Also want to hunt elk. And bison. Cow would be good too but Writer will not let me hunt cow. Says cows belong to cattlemen. Writer is not fun.

TRC:  Faith, I read on your website that you enjoy target shooting.  Does this come in handy when you need to calm down either Jane or Beast?

Faith:  Mostly when I need to let off some steam. After a long week at the keyboard, I need a valve-release. If I don’t have time to go paddling, then a trip to the shooting range is in order. The Hubby hangs my man-shaped targets on the basement windows to scare off burglars. It seems to be working. 🙂

LIGHTNING ROUND

Favorite Food: Shrimp

Favorite Dessert: Italian wedding cake

Milk or Dark Chocolate: Dark

Favorite TV Show: NCIS with Covert Affairs as a rising second.

Last book that you read: I don’t remember the last one, but I am currently reading
Deb Harkness’ Shadow Of Night.

Who is your favorite fictional character (not your own): Harry Dresden.
Hands down. Love me some Harry!

Do you have pets? Oh yeah. We have two spoiled-rotten rescue dogs, Blonde Pomeranians named Tommy and Tuffy. Right now Tommy is asleep on the leather recliner—on a pillow, of course, for his royal comfort, and Tuffy is under my desk chair wedged between the wheels so I can’t shift *at all* without him knowing instantly.
Can you say separation anxiety?

TRC: Thank you, Faith & Beast for answering our questions. We look forward to continuing to read your books, and to work with you again in the future.

Faith: Thanks for having me here. It’s a good day. Come on Beast. Home. Beast! Stop chasing the nice people here. Stop that! They do not liking hiding under their desks. BEAST!
