About the book: RELEASE DATE February 25, 2017

Prince of the Underworld and Lord of Lightning, Valen was banished from his home by his father, Hades, two centuries ago and given a new duty and purpose—to keep our world and his from colliding in a calamity foreseen by the Moirai.

Together with his six brothers, he fights to defend the gates to the Underworld from daemons bent on breaching them and gaining entrance to that forbidden land, striving to protect his home from their dark influence. Cursed by Zeus to never know love again, Valen has brought up barriers around his heart to protect it, but with each new barrier he creates, the dark hold his power has over him grows, becoming all he needs.

Until the night he finally crosses paths with the assassin who has been watching him from the shadows, a bewitching mortal possessing the name of an angel and the skills of a devil—a woman who awakens his passionate heart and stirs dangerous desires.

Eva has built a fearsome reputation for herself in Italy’s underworld, but her latest job in her beloved city of Rome has left her feeling that she has stepped into a dangerous world and this mission might end in her death—either at the hands of her mysteriously seductive client or by the blade of the wickedly alluring warrior who is her target.

As the threat from the daemons escalates and more than just the Rome gate becomes their target, will Valen be strong enough to face the fears in his heart and the ghosts of his past to claim everything he desires or will they lure him deeper under their spell and into the darkness?

REVIEW: VALEN is the second installment in Felicity Heaton’s contemporary, adult GUARDIANS OF HADES paranormal / fantasy romance series very loosely based in Greek mythology, focusing on six brothers- the sons of Hades and Persephone -sent to Earth to guard the gates to the Underworld. This is Prince of the Underworld and Lord of Lightning Valen, and assassin for hire Eva’s story line. VALEN can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order as the brothers struggle against an unknown enemy to keep the human world and the Underworld from colliding.

NOTE: The Guardians of Hades series is Felicity Heaton’s interpretation of, and does not follow, the actual Greek mythological family tree or events.

Told from several third person perspectives including Valen and Eva VALEN follows assassin for hire Eva as she is tasked with taking down a man she knows nothing about. For months our heroine has tracked Valen without success until a run in with her target, and a broken vial of what she believes is poison, finds our heroine in bed with the man who will change her life. Enter Valen, the Lord of Lightning, and a man who believes he is incapable of love. What ensues is the search for the truth, and the building relationship between a mortal and a god.

The relationship between Valen and Eva is one of forbidden love. Eva was hired by a powerful man to bring Valen to his knees; Eva is a woman who for most of her life has remained hidden in the shadows, trained to kill but a woman who will fall in love with a man not of this world. The $ex scenes are intimate and intense without the use of over the top sexually graphic language and text.

All of Valen’s brothers including Ares and his mate Megan (ARES #1), Daimon eldest brother Keras, Marek, Clalistos, Esher, their mother Persephone, and uncle Zeus play secondary and supporting roles. The requisite evil comes with many faces including Benares and his sister Jin-the pair who hired Eva.

Like many of Felicity Heaton’s story lines the tale is told through written narrative, introspection, reflection and internal dialogue but it is the narration that carries most of the story. The premise is entertaining; the characters are broken, colorful and energetic; the romance is passionate and breathtaking. VALEN is an imaginative take on Greek mythology; a spirited look at forbidden love.

REVIEW: ARES is the first installment in Felicity Heaton’s adult GUARDIANS OF HADES paranormal, romance series based in mythology, focusing on six brothers- the sons of Hades and Persephone -sent to earth to guard the gates to the Underworld. This is Prince of the Underworld and Lord of Fire Ares, and Megan’s story line.

Told from several third person perspectives ARES focuses on the brothers’ battle to protect the Gates to the Underworld. With the recent influx of ‘daemons’ in searching for the elusive Gates Ares and his brothers have had to step up their nightly patrol but Ares finds himself out maneuvered in a battle where he will have his powers stolen by a daemon of unknown origin. Enter Megan, a human with some powers of her own, who witnesses the struggle of the man who will steal her heart. What ensues is the building relationship between Ares and Megan, and Ares battle between recovering his powers and the love of a woman that calls to his heart.

The relationship between Ares and Megan is one of immediate attraction. Ares believes Megan is his mate, and with the loss of his powers he is helpless against the feelings and emotional fall out of their physical relationship.

We are introduced to Ares brothers, each with their own power and abilities but brothers who know that once Ares recovers his powers Megan may be destroyed by the man that she loves.

ARES is a sexy and decadent story of ‘forbidden’ love told through character introspection, reflection and plenty of internal dialogue. Felicity Heaton invites the reader into a passionate tale about one man’s search for what he lost, and the love of a woman who offers everything and more. The premise is enchanting: the characters are colorful and animated; the romance is emotional. There is plenty of exciting and lively action as the brothers battle for their lives.

excerpt

Megan kept her head down, using the hood of her coat to keep the rain off her face. She wasn’t sure why she bothered. The storm had already soaked her to the bone. Maybe she did it because the streets in her neighbourhood were pitch-black due to the power outage and she had already passed several unsavoury characters on her route from the bus stop to her apartment. The only light came from passing cars and the lightning forking across the heavy clouds.

She had never seen such a violent storm before and it unsettled her, bringing thoughts of Armageddon and the end of the world. A man passed her on the opposite side of the street, running hard through the heavy rain. He crossed the road further up, moving to her side.

She wrapped her arms around herself as he paused on the pavement and looked in her direction. When her manager had told her she could knock off early from her nightshift at the packing warehouse because of the power problems, she had thought it would be a good thing. Now she wasn’t so sure. She hadn’t considered how dangerous it might be to cross several blocks of New York in total darkness.

The man hadn’t moved.

She turned left down the next street.

It was a shortcut she often used on her way home. Normally, she only did it during the day when there were plenty of people around. It cut several minutes off her journey but it was also an alley. She quickened her pace until she was verging on jogging.

A creeping sense that someone was watching her washed over her and she glanced back into the darkness behind her.

Lightning split the sky and illuminated the main street.

Her heart jumped into her throat as shadows danced around. No sign of the man. She was just being paranoid again. He had probably stopped to figure out where he was going. It was easy to become disorientated in the darkness.

Her footsteps echoed along the alley, loud despite the thunder rolling overhead and the sound of rain battering the tarmac.

She turned to face forwards again.

Lightning flashed.

Her heart leaped into her throat.

An immense figure strolled towards her from the other end of the alley, long coat flaring out from his waist in the wind that gusted from behind her, pushing her towards him. His hand reached down to his side, she caught a flash of metal in the next lightning strike, and then he was running at her.

Chills erupted down her spine and over her arms.

“Move.” The word was a dark growl and her heart stopped dead.

Before she could convince her feet to do as he had ordered, he reached her. A bright burst of light illuminated his face, revealing chiselled features set into a black scowl and eyes that burned her with their intensity as they briefly locked with hers, and then he was running up the wall beside her and flipping over her head like some damned action hero.

He landed hard behind her and her heart exploded into action.

Megan whirled on the spot and brought her hands up in front of her, expecting him to attack her. Her dark eyes widened. The man from the street was there at the other end of the alley.

The larger man ran at him and she caught flickers of both men in the lightning strikes and another flash of metal. The slimmer male had a gun too. Her breath hitched and she tried to run but found that she couldn’t. Her legs refused to respond, no matter how desperately she tried to get them to work. The one who had spoken to her reached the smaller man and they both moved incredibly quickly, beyond humanly possible.

Was it the lightning causing them to look as though they were moving faster than her eyes could track?

It had to be.

They clashed and before either of them could fire their gun, they had both knocked the other one’s away. The big man drew two large blades from inside his long black coat, his broad back to her, and clashed again with the slimmer man. She only caught snippets of their fight as the storm raged above them.

Was it a gang fight, or perhaps a mugging?

Megan wasn’t sure what was happening but she knew what she should be doing. She had to run, or maybe call the police. She pulled her bag towards her and fumbled with it. She couldn’t see a damn thing in the darkness. Where was her phone?

Lightning flashed again and the slimmer man was only a few feet from her, his wet blond hair plastered to his forehead and dark gaze locked on her. The large man tackled him from behind and they rolled past her as she shrieked and leaped away from them, hitting the wall of the alley. Her legs trembled and her bag fell from her shoulder.

“It will take more than steel to win this fight,” the blond man snarled and she frowned at his accent. French?

A bright flash exploded overhead, the thunder rolling in time with it, and she flattened against the wall. Both men had found their feet and were fighting close to her, heading back towards the end of the alley in a flurry of kicks and punches.

She caught brief flickers of the blond man’s thin face as he fought the bigger brunet. Rain rolled down his cheeks and dripped from his small goatee. He didn’t look scared as he fought a man twice his size.

That man circled with him, his expression a picture of darkness and intent. Strands of his overlong dark hair had fallen down and were stuck to his sculpted cheeks. Not a trace of fear lined his features either.

If anything, both of them looked angry.

The Frenchman attacked with a burst of punches, landing a few despite how quickly the other man moved to evade them and then he was on the defensive as the big man swiped with his twin knives. He grunted as one of the blades sliced across his arm and the sickening tinny scent of blood instantly joined the smell of earth and ozone in the air.

He flipped backwards towards the mouth of the alley and came to a halt. He straightened, facing the larger man, and squared his shoulders. The lights in the alley blinked back into life and Megan looked at the street beyond him. They were back on there too. The dim alley lights shone down on the two men as they faced each other, both casual despite the fact they were in the middle of a fight, as if this was an everyday occurrence for them.

The Frenchman tipped his chin up and his eyes narrowed. “I have been waiting for this moment for a very long time.”

“Your death?” the larger man growled, his voice deep and edged with darkness. “You should have dropped in earlier. I’m always happy to send scum like you into the afterlife.”

The Frenchman’s thin lips twisted in a cruel smile. “It is you who will die here tonight.”

“We’ll see.” The larger man launched himself forwards, boots pounding the tarmac.

The blond man raised his hand and suddenly the big one was flying through the air towards her.

She dived out of his path and hit the wet ground hard. Pain blazed through her right shoulder and she curled up on her side, covering her head with her arms. The brunet hit the wall and shards of brick rained down on her. When everything went quiet, she gathered the courage to crack her eyes open.

The large man lay face down on the ground near her. Above him, there was a huge dent in the brick wall of the building. What the heck had just happened? Was he dead? Her hands shook with the thought of witnessing a murder. It wasn’t possible that a man could survive something like that, at least not without broken bones and a severe concussion, but then everything that had happened in the last few seconds seemed impossible.

Her gaze darted between him and the blond man. She had faced some dire odds in her life and survived, but something told her that she wasn’t going to survive this. She should have run when she’d had the chance. She didn’t want to die here tonight.

The large man snarled something dark and her eyes widened as he moved. His hands shifted closer to his elbows and he pushed himself up onto his knees. He shook his head, causing the long strands of his wet hair to caress his face, and then got to his feet.

How the heck could he move after that?

He shouldn’t even be conscious.

His dark eyes shifted to her and she swore red embers lit their penetrating depths. He stared at her for a few seconds, as though they were the only two in the world and there wasn’t another man in the street with them.

A man who wanted to kill him.

“You okay?” he husked and she swallowed and nodded. He nodded too and then did something that surprised her. He smiled, his sensual mouth curving into it and setting her heart racing. How the heck could he smile when he had just been tossed into a wall with such force he shouldn’t be standing right now and was bleeding? “Stay down. I won’t let him near you. It’ll be over soon and you’ll be safe. Understand?”

He growled like a feral beast before she could respond and launched his right hand forwards, as though throwing something at the other man. A bright fierce orb of fire burst from his hand and shot down the alley, blinding in the darkness. He turned and chased it. It exploded against a wall and another flash of fire followed it.

Megan couldn’t believe her eyes.

The large man dodged and air whooshed past her, ruffling her wet shoulder-length hair. Trashcans further along the alley exploded as though something had struck them. Was that what had hit the large man and thrown him into the wall?

She crept to that brick wall and crouched there, keeping as small as possible. Her heart pounded and eyes darted, trying to take in the fight as fear turned to fascination.

The brunet unleashed another swirling orb of fire from his palms and the Frenchman evaded it, rolling forwards in the alley. The man levelled another fiery blast at him, catching him this time and sending him spinning through the air. He landed hard on the tarmac and rolled.

Awestruck didn’t cover how she felt as she watched them now. Both of them had powers. It was incredible.

The big man pounded towards the other one and he disappeared, reappearing right in front of him. They clashed again and the sound of material tearing cut through the thunder rumbling across the city. The brunet leaped backwards, towards her, distancing himself.

“You’ll pay for that,” he growled and she looked at the Frenchman. He stood in the middle of the alley, black cloth dangling from one of his hands. Had he torn the man’s clothes?

The slim blond smiled, tossed the piece of material aside and crooked a finger. “Come and make me.”

The brunet charged and they clashed again, each throwing punches. Megan flinched with every heavy blow and vicious kick, fear slowly trickling back in to wash away her fascination. She had seen some brawls in her time, but nothing like this.

This wasn’t a brawl.

It was a battle.

The lights on the walls flickered, flashes of lightning causing them to stutter. She couldn’t tell who was winning. She hoped it was the brunet because she had the impression that he wasn’t out to hurt her. Not like the other man. There had been moments when he had looked her way, and each time there had been a look on his face that said she was next.

The Frenchman ducked to evade a punch and threw his palm at the larger man. Was he trying to push him over? Megan couldn’t see why he would want to do that and it was the only explanation she could find for him pressing his palm against the man’s chest.

The immense brunet flung his head back and threw his arms out at his sides as he roared in agony at the storm. The lights on the wall of the alley died as his garbled scream filled the night, battling the growling thunder. He fell to his knees and arched backwards, the Frenchman’s hand still pressed against his chest. Orange light shone from the point where they connected, illuminating the blond man’s face as he grinned.

“It was too easy.” He drew his hand back and stared at his fingers.

Something glowed in the centre of his palm, strange light illuminating threads that ran around the back of his hand. He turned his cruel gaze on the large man.

The man collapsed forwards, palms pressing into the wet ground, and the lights on the wall blinked back into life again. His big body heaved as he breathed hard and she frowned as she realised something.

He was shaking.

Flames flickered over the Frenchman’s hand and a fireball grew from the centre of his palm. He aimed it down at the other man.

In an instant, Megan knew what he was going to do and she couldn’t allow it to happen. She couldn’t let this man kill the brunet. She wouldn’t stand for it. Her gaze quickly scanned the dimly lit street and darted back again. One of their guns lay on the wet tarmac only a few feet from her. She reacted on instinct, pushing off the ground and running for it.

She scooped it up.

Raised it.

Fired.

A loud crack like thunder split the silence and she jerked back from the force of the recoil.

The bullet nailed the Frenchman in his right shoulder, knocking him backwards, away from the other man.

An unholy shriek pierced her ears, more like the sound a bird of prey would make rather than a man, and the Frenchman turned his gaze on her. Megan hesitated, fear washing through her stronger than ever and her heart smashing like a jackhammer against her ribs. Eyes that glowed ethereally locked on to her.

What was he?

He raised his hand, the light from the fireball casting dark shadows across his face. She didn’t hesitate. She lifted the heavy silver gun and took aim again.

The fireball exploded from his palm.

But beneath the cold façade beats the heart of a vampire torn between love and hate, ripped in two directions by a single ethereally beautiful female—his fated phantom mate.

Driven by her phantom instincts, Isla used a spell to make her solid in order to deceive the vampire who killed her sister’s demon mate and have revenge on him, condemning him with a single kiss to become a phantom too. But her plan took an unexpected turn when she fell in love with him, and with her new life, and the night she betrayed him shattered both of their hearts. Now, he lives to make her suffer through their connection, one that is fading with them as they begin to slip into the phantom world, and she must face the monster she created if she is to save herself and the vampire she still loves.

With a demon from Grave’s past determined to destroy him and everything he holds dear, and the clock ticking down to their inevitable doom, can he and Isla overcome their past and their pride to work together to secure the future they both desire deep in their hearts? Or will death finally catch up with the vampire king and his phantom mate?

••••••••••••

REVIEW: HAUNTED BY THE KING OF DEATH is the eleventh installment in Felicity Heaton’s ETERNAL MATES paranormal romance series. This is vampire warrior Grave Van der Garde, and phantom Isla’s story line. HAUNTED BY THE KING OF DEATH can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Several of the characters from Felicity’s Vampire Erotic Theatre series cross over with the premise of HAUNTED BY THE KING OF DEATH allowing for a new direction in the Eternal Mates series.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Grave and Isla) HAUNTED BY THE KING OF DEATH follows the rekindling of the relationship between Grave Van der Garde and his wayward mate Isla. Approximately one hundred years earlier our heroine seduced and cursed the ruthless vampire in retaliation for the murder of her beloved brother in law. For close to a century, Isla and Grave have led separate but connected lives, but a spell once cast to keep Isla in corporeal form begins to fail taking she and Grave, the vampire she has always loved, towards the fade. What ensues is the search for the mage who cast the original spell, and the struggle to keep one step ahead of a demon determined to destroy their lives. Grave is a mercenary who has killed too many men, and revenge and retaliation have landed on his front door threatening everyone he loves. Be forewarned, the violence quotient has increased in this particular story line-not everyone will survive; no one is safe from trauma and death.

Once again, like most of the previous story lines in the series, HAUNTED BY THE KING OF DEATH is mostly a narrative where the reader follows the story line through the leading characters’ thoughts and ideas. The interaction between Grave and Isla is limited in the first half of the book but picks up when our couple must embark on a journey to save one another’s life. The relationship between Grave and Isla is tempestuous at best but both begin to realize that they have loved one another since the day they met. The $ex scenes are intimate and intense. Grave needs to reclaim the mate he hasn’t touched in close to one hundred years.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters; a number of the original couples from Felicity’s Vampire Erotic Theatre make an appearance including Snow and Aurora, Payne and Elissa. We are also introduced to Grave’s brothers-Bastien and Night. The remaining member of Isla’s extended family Frey is now in the position of King of the First Realm.

HAUNTED BY THE KING OF DEATH is a fast paced, action packed and entertaining story of betrayal, revenge and second chances. The premise is enchanting and imaginative; the characters are colorful, animated and dynamic; the romance is fated by slow to build. Felicity Heaton’s addicting ETERNAL MATES series is a passionate ride through the world of the paranormal.

excerpt

Darkness rolled over the land, visceral power that pressed down on him and chilled his blood.
Around him, the battle stilled, warriors frozen in position, locked in combat for a heartbeat before they all broke apart and turned as one towards the black mountains.

Grave looked there.

A male stood on a huge rock at the base of the mountain, just metres beyond the edge of the battle. He towered over them, black eyes surveying every warrior below him, gold elliptical pupils flashing as his gaze shifted quickly from one male to the next. His stance was casual, the black gauntlet covering the lower half of his right arm resting on the hilt of a huge black broadsword that stood beside him, the point buried into the solid rock, but Grave had the feeling this male hadn’t come to the edge of the Devil’s domain just to watch them fight.

The demon straightened and curled his clawed fingers over the pommel of his sword as his black eyebrows pinched low and his broad lips flattened.

Grave watched him closely, wary of the newcomer. He was young, appearing little more than in his early twenties to mortal eyes, but that meant nothing when it came to demons, especially those of the Devil’s ranks.

This male could easily decimate both sides of the warriors gathered before him.

It was rare for one of his kind to leave the Devil’s realm, although as far as Grave could tell, the male still stood within the threshold of his dark lord’s lands.

The sensation of death and power that he exuded seemed to grow stronger as he searched the faces of the warriors, and many of them began backing away from him, some of the Preux Chevaliers included.

Grave remained where he was, beyond the line of demons and vampires now forming between him and the newcomer.

The young male ran the claws of his left gauntlet around the curve of his polished black horn and then ran the pad of his thumb across the pointed tip. They looked as if they had been sharpened, made even more deadly.

The longer Grave watched him, the stronger a sensation within him grew, a feeling that he knew the male even though he also felt sure he had never met him before.

He was oddly familiar.

But then, most demons looked the same to him.

The male’s broad bare chest shifted in a deep sigh and he moved his left foot, his shoulders twisting as he went to turn away.

His eyes landed on Grave.

He stilled and narrowed his gaze, and his demeanour darkened, the sense of power that flowed from him becoming a crushing wave as he turned back to face him and lifted his left hand.

Pointed right at Grave.

“You,” the male snarled through sharp fangs and Grave had half a mind to point a finger at his chest and blink hard.

Instead, he remained perfectly still and held his calm façade even as a question pounded in his mind.

What had he done to deserve the bastard’s attention?

He scowled as the ranks of warriors between him and the demon parted, all three factions quick to clear the way, removing themselves from the firing line.

Grave bared his fangs at Asher, daring him to back away any further than he already had.

So a demon of the Devil’s ranks had come to them looking for a fight.

It wasn’t the first time he had fought a demon of his kind and it wouldn’t be the last. He had fought older, stronger demons from the Devil’s domain than this one and lived to tell the tale.

He would mount the bastard’s head on his wall.

Or his entire carcass on the towering metal spikes outside his palace.

The demon pulled his black broadsword free of the rock and dropped to the earth, the obsidian armour on his lower half rattling as he landed hard. He straightened and the warriors around Grave backed off another step. Asher wisely remained where he was, his sword at the ready and his crimson eyes locked on the demon.

Grave calmly walked forwards, into the gap between the two groups of warriors. The situation was turning strange, with warriors who had been fighting to the death just minutes ago now united in silence in the face of a potential new enemy.

An enemy that had singled him out for some damned reason.

“What do you want?” Grave barked and the male’s black eyes darkened.

“You,” he hissed and stalked towards him, crossing the threshold between the realms.

Grave arched an eyebrow. “Any reason why? I was in the middle of a battle so I would like to know why you chose to disturb it and by the looks of things ruin my chances of getting paid for the job we had undertaken.”

“A job,” the demon spat and flexed black clawed fingers around the hilt of his obsidian blade. “For a price you will do anything… kill anyone?”

He nodded.

Maybe the demon had come to buy the services of the Preux Chevaliers.

That thought died when the demon disappeared only to reappear right in front of him, launched a hand out and grabbed him around the throat. He choked as the demon lifted him from the ground by his neck and kicked out, striking hard with his boots, battering the male’s legs.

He sensed Asher rush forwards.

“Retreat,” Grave bit out when the demon turned his black eyes on his men, his elliptical pupils little more than gold slits burning in their centres, and he felt the male’s intent to attack.

Whatever he had done, he could find a way out of it, but he wasn’t going to put his men in the firing line for no reason. He was their captain, their commander, and he was damned if they were going to die because of him.

“Retreat.” He squeezed that word out again and relief poured through him when he heard Asher barking orders to his men and sensed them moving back, drifting into the distance.

The lands around them emptied, leaving him alone with the demon male.

“How very noble,” the demon said, his voice a low purr laced with darkness, fury so strong that Grave could almost feel it sliding over his skin, tugging at his bloodlust. The male’s eyes slid back to him and narrowed again as he studied him, tilting his head to his left. “Odd that you have such an approach with your subordinates when you do not extend that nobility to others.”

To others?

Grave frowned and grasped the male’s wrist and hand in an attempt to lessen the pressure on his throat.

The male snarled and tightened his grip in response, and Grave choked as his head felt as if it was going to burst and he swore he could feel his trachea collapsing.

He kicked out again and the male snarled, twisted towards the mountains and hurled him at them. Pain exploded across his back as he slammed into the rock on which the demon had stood and he breathed hard as he collapsed onto the black earth, wheezing as he fought for air.

“Where was your nobility when you murdered my family?” the demon growled and the ground shook with each word, causing small chunks of rock to break off the boulder at Grave’s back and rain down on him.

He closed his eyes and flinched as one struck his temple and he felt the sting, smelled the fresh blood as it bloomed to the surface of the cut.

He had murdered the demon’s family?

“I came only to deliver a message… this time.” The male’s voice was so loud that Grave tensed, his eyes shooting open.

Boots filled his vision.

A face filled it a moment later as the demon hauled him off the ground by his throat again and shoved him against the rock. A face filled with fury, twisted in pain and hatred, darkened by anger. Razor sharp fangs flashed between his teeth as he snarled and his black horns flared further forwards, so close to Grave’s face as the demon leaned towards him that he leaned back, pressing the back of his aching head into the rock.

“I came to deliver a warning.”

Grave swallowed as best he could. He wasn’t sure he should be thankful about the fact he was going to survive this encounter, not when the air around him had slowly turned ominous, a sense of doom steadily growing within him.

“I have spent my years well, Lord Van der Garde,” the male hissed in his face and smiled slowly. “My dark master gave me access to his seers… gave me knowledge and power. I know of Night and Bastian… your brothers… I know of your cousins, Snow and Antoine… I know of their family.”

Grave tried to shake his head. No. He wouldn’t let this bastard target his family because of something he had done.

He lunged forwards and cracked his forehead against the demon’s, and the male grunted and reeled backwards from the force of the blow, his grip loosening. Grave broke free and shoved his hands against the male’s chest, and then darted around him, gaining space and freedom.

He would kill the bastard right here and put an end to his threat.

He ran across the black earth, crimson eyes furiously scanning it for a weapon, any weapon.

The air behind him shifted and the ground slammed into his face, and he cried out as his right scapula shattered under the force of the demon’s blow.

The male leaned over him, bringing his mouth so close to Grave’s right ear that his left horn stabbed into the nape of his neck.

Grave stilled, heart pounding as he felt the press of the male’s horn against his spine. One wrong move and the male would kill him with it, he knew it.

He gritted his teeth and bit back the growl of frustration that wanted to burst from his lips. As soon as the male gave him space, he would find a way to break free again. He had to bide his time. He would find a way to break free and he would find a blade, and he would cut the bastard’s head off.

“Such anger,” the male whispered into his ear. “Imagine how I feel… imagine seven hundred years of waiting… yearning to kill you and your kin as you killed mine before my very eyes… taking my family from me… leaving me to die in that castle… nothing more than a helpless babe.”

A shiver ran down Grave’s spine.

He remembered that night, and he hadn’t been alone in leading the attack on the black castle at the edge of the Devil’s lands. Snow had been with him.

It wasn’t possible the demon had been at the castle though.

They had been thorough, had checked every room, every damned nook and cranny to ensure they had killed the entire family of demons. It had been part of the contract they had been carrying out for the Preux Chevaliers. The Seventh King of demons had wanted the noble family eradicated because they had been sending the more powerful Devil’s demons to raze their lands and kill their people.

It had been a message to the Devil, a warning to remove his cherished elite from the borders of their realms, and it had worked.

But this male had survived, and now he was sending a message to Grave, one he couldn’t dare to ignore.

“Next time our paths cross… I will be delivering the heads of your entire family… one by one.”

The demon stilled and Grave could feel his eyes on his back, close to his hand where it pressed into his broken right shoulder, keeping him pinned face down on the black ground.

Grave gasped as the male ripped the shirt from his back and squeezed his eyes shut as claws raked lightly over his skin, tracing a pattern between his shoulder blades.

“A mating mark,” the demon murmured and continued to follow the lines of it.

Grave swallowed against the bile rising up his throat, fought the flood of vile oily darkness that pulled at his bloodlust as the male stroked his claws across his flesh and his power flowed over him. Into him.

Power that Grave knew he wasn’t strong enough to overcome on the battlefield, not as he was now, weakened by the very mark the male had noticed.

“This is unexpected.” The demon moved his hand to the back of Grave’s head and shoved it down against the rough ground, and he grimaced as pain splintered across his skull. The male leaned closer again and smirked. “Unexpected but not unwelcomed. I will take my time with the female when I find her. Perhaps I will even keep her alive for a while… to serve me.”

Grave snarled and flashed his fangs, unable to keep still any longer. No one touched Isla. No one but him. He was going to be the one to end her, not some demon. Her life was his to take in payment for what she had done to him.

The male pressed harder on his head and he ground his teeth against the pain, stilled beneath the demon, fearing he would crush his skull if he kept fighting him even when he knew the demon wanted him alive.

Wanted him to suffer.

“I will send you to your death soon enough… but first you must witness the bloody end of your family… and you will die with the knowledge that your mate is forever in these hands.” He brought his claws close to Grave’s face and Grave flinched away, unable to stop himself from reacting.

The demon’s smile grew wider. Darker.

And then he was gone.

Grave remained face down on the earth, breathing hard as he battled the sudden flood of emotions, feelings he hadn’t experienced in a very long time.

Fear. Despair.

He rolled onto his back and stared at the dark grey sky of Hell, and the mark on his back warmed, began to tingle as a connection started to open.

He slammed it shut on her, unwilling to allow her to see him like this, shaken and afraid, fearing for his life and that of his family.

He had already lost too many of them.

He pulled down a hard breath, curled his fingers into fists until his claws bit into his palms, and then roared his fury at the sky, stopping only when his lungs burned and head turned. His fangs bit into his gums as he snarled, fury obliterating his fear, darkness destroying the despair.

He was the King of Death, second only to the Devil in this dark realm. A lowly prince of demons was no match for him.

Grave would hunt him down and kill him before he could lay a claw on any of his family.

If the male wanted war, then he would have one.

REVIEW: AWAKENED BY A DEMONESS is the tenth installment in Felicity Heaton’s adult ETERNAL MATES paranormal/fantasy romance series. This is angel and Fifth Commander of the Echelon ‘Rey’, and Hell’s demon Asteria of the Second Legion’s story line. AWAKENED BY A DEMONESS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Asteria and Rey) AWAKENED BY A DEMONESS is a story of forbidden love that follows the building relationship between one of Heaven’s angels, and one of Hell’s demons. Asteria and Rey have been sent on assignment by their respective ‘leaders’, each searching for a certain half-breed witch who reveals more than our couple could have imagined. When Asteria finds herself in the land of the Fae, she comes face to face with one of Heaven’s angels-a man who would become her future and potential downfall.

The relationship between our couple begins acrimoniously. Our angel, whom Asteria names Rey, is a hunter of demons but for some reason he is unable to destroy the woman with whom he will fall in love. Asteria is a demon; a sassy female who must complete her assignment or face the wrath of Satan-himself. Asteria pushes all of Rey’s buttons, while Rey attempts to keep his distance from the sexy demon. The $ex scenes, although limited in number, are seductive and provocative.

AWAKENED BY A DEMONESS, like most of Heaton’s previous intallments, is mostly a narrative where the reader follows the story line through the leading character’s thoughts, ideas and reflections. The series arc has taken on a new direction. There is a war on the horizon between Heaven and Hell, and our couple may have committed themselves to one side more than the other. The premise is an adventure with a few surprises; the characters are colorful, exotic and animated; the romance is intimate and emotional. Felicity Heaton’s AWAKENED BY A DEMONESS will captivate your imagination leaving your breathless for more.

Asteria didn’t like the way the angel was eyeing her. She wanted to say that she doubted he would attack her in such a public place, but angels were a pain in the arse like that and didn’t normally give a fuck about pulling innocents into their battles if it meant another demon bit the dust. She kept an eye on him as she drank her tankard of brew, enjoying the buzz that tripped through her with each sip.

When the males loitering around her feet began to look as if they were losing interest, she flashed them another flirty smile and flicked her black hair over her shoulder, revealing her cleavage and pulling them back under her spell. They weren’t difficult to manipulate. It wasn’t even taking all of her wiles to keep them firmly under her control and thinking they had a shot with her.

As if.

She shuddered at just the thought. None of the fae and immortals below her were worthy of her attention. They certainly weren’t the type of male she would bang.

Her eyes betrayed her and slid towards the angel where he casually leaned against a stone building to her left, stunning pale green eyes scanning the busy square. He folded his muscular arms across his broad chest, causing his black t-shirt to stretch tight, and frowned as he blinked. When his eyes opened again, they were locked on her. She shivered, a hot bolt of lightning zinging through her bones.

She pulled down a breath to steady herself and glared at him for good measure, until he looked away from her.

She had a problem with him.

Mostly based on the fact he was too bloody handsome.

The sort of handsome that had her eyes gravitating towards him all the time and seemed to turn the sensible part of her brain to mush because she kept forgetting that he wasn’t just eye candy.

He was angelic eye candy.

He was all good, and bright, and holier-than-thou and shit that got her back up. But by the Devil, he was gorgeous.

She didn’t have to work hard to imagine just how chiselled and perfect his body was beneath the damned clothes that concealed it. If the toned sinewy muscles of his bare arms were anything to go by, the delicious corded perfection of his deltoids and those bulging biceps, and sexy toned forearms, then he was a god beneath the irritating black t-shirt and jeans.

She wanted to tear them off him to see if she was right.

With her teeth.

She could just imagine how he would react to that too, and what sort of punishment would await her if anyone back home found out she had banged an angel.

Although, if she screwed him and he fell from grace, she would probably get a promotion and a hefty reward from the Devil. He liked to reward that sort of thing. Another fallen angel for his ranks would certainly go a long way towards scrubbing the black stain off her name.

She shook her head, dislodging that idea.

She had been stupid enough to approach the angel when she had spotted him across the square, placing herself in grave danger. Seducing him to the dark side was not going to happen. She wasn’t even sure why she had confronted him. She wasn’t the sort to do something so reckless, not under normal circumstances. The sight of the angel had panicked her though, and she put it down to fear of what her dark lord would do to her if she failed this mission. That fear had made her attempt to drive the angel off her turf.

She was still surprised he hadn’t killed her.

Asteria dragged her eyes away from him, dropped them back to her drooling band of idiots, and smiled at all of them.

“So, about this coven,” she said and they all spoke at once, a cacophony that made her want to scream as she tried to understand what they were rushing to tell her.

She picked out a few juicy titbits about the coven she was meant to locate, the most annoying one being that they had moved on and were travelling south.

Damn it.

Another hot shiver tripped through her and she tensed in response to the feel of the angel’s eyes on her again. She tried to ignore him, but it wasn’t long before her eyes had gravitated back to him.

Why had she confronted him, placing herself in the firing line of his wrath?

It had been an urge at the time and she had followed it, but now that she was questioning it, she wasn’t sure what the urge had really been or where it had come from. She had set eyes on him, had known instinctively that he was an angel, and the next thing she had known, she had been storming across the square towards him, her best you-know-you-want-this strut in place.

She had flirted with him.

What the ever living Hell was wrong with her?

Flirted.

She had convinced herself that it had been to rile him and get his back up, because irritating an angel had been fun, but there was a part of her that had to work pretty damn hard to pretend that some of it hadn’t been real. She hadn’t really flirted with him. She hadn’t really imagined just how hot it might be to lure him over to the dark side. She really hadn’t lost herself in a fantasy about just how incredible he might be as a lover, with all that power and strength, and his wicked good looks.

It had all been an act on her part.

Totally an act.

Those stunning peridot eyes slid her way again, sending white-hot lightning arcing through her as they landed on her, and she couldn’t drag her gaze away from his.

She felt weak.

Trembled.

It was being away from Hell. It messed with her powers and left her vulnerable, and that was why he affected her so badly. Here, he was stronger than she was, a threat to her. She didn’t need an angel sniffing around when she was on such an important mission, one where her life was on the line, and he was doing just that. The bastard was listening in on her conversation.

She was starting to feel that the Devil had left out some details, like the fact there was a fucking Echelon after the same target and now tall-blond-and-holy was going to be chasing her tail.

Asteria scowled at him and flipped him the bird.

He arched a pale eyebrow at that and sighed.

He annoyed the hell out of her. He was so damned haughty and self-righteous, just like all the angels. She could feel it from here. He was dripping with goodness and it sickened her. That was it. That was why she found it impossible to keep her eyes off him and ignore him. He affected her because he was sickeningly good… and hot.

He was undeniably hot.

Incredibly hot.

She glared at him and both of his eyebrows rose high on his forehead, a confused look entering his eyes before they emptied of emotion again.

Angels shouldn’t be hot.

Okay, the Devil was a fallen angel and he was a beautiful bastard, but for some reason, it rubbed her the wrong way with this guy. It made her skin itchy, but at the same time it filled her with a twisted need.

She was awfully tempted to try and break his shiny metaphorical halo in half and stick it up his arse, but she was equally tempted to seduce the bastard.

Maybe it would knock him down a peg or three.

Asteria dismissed it. Her dark lord might love a present of a corrupted angel, but there was a tiny part of her that wasn’t sure pleasing him would be the reason she did it. She refused to look too closely at that part, afraid of what she might find.

“Do you know where the Cruyssen coven were heading?” She smiled sweetly at a young scrawny cat shifter and leaned over, giving him a view of her cleavage as she stroked her hand under his chin.

His eyes slid shut as she lightly raked her claws through the messy scruff on his jaw and he practically purred.

The sensation of the angel’s eyes on her grew fiercer, as if he was glaring at her now. She ignored the bastard and kept with her stroking, until the cat shifter was putty in her hands.

“London… t-the fae town near it,” he stammered and looked wounded when she removed her hand and leaned back, turning her attention on the nymph male as he cleared his throat.

Out of all the men gathered at her feet, he was the most tempting, his thick black hair and vivid cerulean eyes setting off his natural good looks. His ripped bare torso didn’t hurt either, giving her something nice to look at as she smiled down at him.

Not as nice as the angel.

Asteria shoved that voice out of her head and kept her focus on the nymph. “You know where this town is?”

He nodded. “At a mansion in the countryside. I can take you there.”

Tempting, but she didn’t need an escort.

Her gaze flicked to the angel again. Although, if he was going to tail her, an escort might be useful. She shook that thought away and shifted her focus back to her boys. She was strong enough to deal with her Echelon friend and she preferred to roll alone.

The sensation of his eyes on her disappeared and the instinct that constantly warned her of danger faded. She resisted the temptation to look to her left and see whether he was still watching her.

“It’s popular with witches,” the wolf shifter put in, his eagerness pleasing her as he stepped closer. She did love the way he panted over her, hunger in his brown eyes. She leaned over and tunnelled her fingers through his mousy hair, clutched it and pulled him closer still. “It’s run by the Rozengard coven.”

“Another coven?” She frowned down at him as she patted him on the head, brushed her palm over his hair and down the side of his face to under his chin. She tipped it up and gripped his jaw.

“A male one. Look for loose white shirts and brown trousers. Their uniform.” He looked as if he wanted a treat for being such a good boy.

She pressed a kiss to her other fingers and touched them to his lips. The poor male almost fainted. Such easy prey.

She slipped into flirting on autopilot with them as she mulled over everything they had told her, flashing them teasing smiles. The angel might be a problem.

Her gaze sought him.

He was gone.

She scanned the throng in the square, covering every inch of it, but he was nowhere to be seen.

Asteria smiled as she realised he had left before he had heard the best part from her informants, one that had given her a solid lead in the form of the Rozengard coven.

This was going to be easier than she had expected.

review

POSSESSED BY A DARK WARRIOR is the ninth installment in Felicity Heaton’s adult ETERNAL MATES paranormal/fantasy romance series. This is Commander Bleu of the Dark Elf legions , and dragon shifter Taryn’s story line. POSSESSED BY A DARK WARRIOR can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Commander Bleu’s story has been building throughout the series-quiet, powerful, in control, and a man who is determined to protect Prince Loren-no matter the cost.

Told from dual third person perspectives POSSESSED BY A DARK WARRIOR is mostly a narrative(as per Heaton’s style of story telling) told from our heroine and hero’s points of view; a story line that presents the events from the past that have lead Bleu and Taryn to present day. Hundreds of years earlier Taryn-a female, dragon shifter, had been accused of killing thousands of elves and stealing a deadly blade belonging to the Elven people. For centuries Commander Bleu has searched for the elusive she-dragon in the hopes of taking back the blade and destroying the dragon in the process. Fast forward to present day wherein Bleu discovers the whereabouts of the deadly dragon only to realize that Taryn is his fated mate and the truth is not what he has been lead to believe. What ensues is the push and pull of a relationship that finds Taryn siding with the man that she loves against the brother she no longer knows.

POSSESSED BY A DARK WARRIOR is a story with more graphic violence than in previous installments. The torture, terror and amped up cruelty is heightened in this particular story line – Taryn’s brother is a dragon possessed by the darkness and acts out against those he declares the enemy. The world building focuses on the recovery of the Elven blade, and the take down of a dragon that has destroyed so many lives.

The relationship between Bleu and Taryn is one fated by DNA but Bleu believes that Taryn is responsible for the death of thousands of elves. Taryn, on the other hand, knows that Bleu is her mate, but also the man who has sworn vengeance against her for sins of the past. The $ex scenes are intimate and intense-having a mate is something new for Bleu-and he is having a difficult time keeping his emotions and possessive needs under control.

POSSESSED BY A DARK WARRIOR has a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters as the different realms set to go to war with the dragons. Many of the names and faces will be familiar to readers of Felicity’s ETERNAL MATES. Taryn was first introduced to the reader in BITTEN BY A HELLCAT (Eternal Mates #6) when Taryn and several others were rescued from a slaver.

There is quite a bit of duplicity and repetition throughout the story line that I thought could have been edited out-e.g. the continuous need to acknowledge eye color, clothing color, and color of the dragon-sometimes the constant reminders become filler in the story, and I found myself skipping or jumping onto the next sentence or paragraph.

POSSESSED BY A DARK WARRIOR is a revealing story line; an enchanting love story about two people whose lives are thrown together by chaos and destruction; a fateful relationship that is dramatic, intense, emotional and impassioned. The premise is captivating; the characters are animated and heartbreaking; the romance is powerful and passionate. Felicity Heaton’s ETERNAL MATES series will leave the reader sated but wanting more.

excerpt

The mountains seemed endless, stretching as far as his eyes could see across one hundred and eighty degrees of his field of vision. Bleu stood high on a cragged ledge, his back to a black mountain that many in Hell would find forbidding, because it marked the border of the dragon realm. He could see a few flying into the realm, their jewel colours bright against the dull grey sky. He hadn’t lived in the time when dragons had been free to fly in the mortal realm, but he could easily imagine how majestic they would have appeared against a dazzling blue backdrop spotted with pale clouds.

Dragons had been allies of the elves once, so many millennia ago that the only proof they had of their friendship were tattered pieces of the ancient records of the elven kings and queens, scratched onto thick leather now so brittle they would break if someone dared to remove them from the delicate glass case that contained them in the castle.

The castle.

Bleu turned his gaze towards it, instinctively aware of which direction his home lay in, feeling the familiar tug in his gut that told him to return to it. He had business there, and he had never been one to ignore his instincts. They were rarely wrong, and right now they were blaring a warning at him to step back from the dragon realm and seek a safer course of action.

He needed a team if he was going to venture into the realm of dragons and dare to question them about one of their own kind.

It was too dangerous to head in alone.

Dragons were fiercely protective of their own kind, even those they knew had committed a crime that had given their species a black name in the language of the elves.

He didn’t fancy ending up as roasted elf, so he would return to the castle and form his team—the same trio of warriors that had been with him the last time he had hunted the female dragon.

He focused on his body, calling his portal, and green-purple light shimmered over the scales of his black armour. Darkness swallowed him and when it receded, he was standing in the bright sun-filled verdant courtyard of the castle.

It towered above him, a beautiful mixture of pale and dark stone quarried from the mountains, shaped to form tall towers topped with conical tiled roofs set on a series of large square buildings with balconies that ran across their length. The main building stood five storeys tall, and the thick towers rose to spear the darkening sky and added another six levels.

A warm breeze chased over the high walls surrounding the castle and rustled the leaves of the trees in the orchard around him, carrying the scent of their blooms. Nature embraced him again, a tender touch that soothed him after being surrounded by the darkness of the demon and dragon realms.

He began to relax and then tensed again when Prince Loren appeared right in front of him, his handsome face dark and his violet eyes flashing as he shoved his fingers through his neat blue-black hair and began to pace. His formal knee-length jacket flapped around his legs with each agitated stride across the pale gravel path that spread outwards from the portal, intersecting the lush grass that grew beneath the trees.

Something was wrong.

Wrong enough that his prince had left a council meeting to come straight to him.

Before he could ask his prince what was bothering him, Loren turned on him.

The dark crescents beneath his prince’s eyes concerned him and he took a step forwards, growing determined to find out what was worrying him and find a way to relieve his prince of whatever burden his shoulders held.

“Where have you been?” Loren said, a slight sombre edge to his voice as he halted before Bleu, his bright violet eyes searching Bleu’s. “You have failed to return to the castle since Vail came.”

There was a tone in those last three words that conveyed a wealth of hurt but relief too. Loren always sounded that way when speaking of his younger brother, but Bleu held no love for the mad prince himself, not since he had gone to war with Loren and the elf kingdom, and had decimated an entire legion of the army.

The legion Bleu had served in under Vail.

He had been one of only a handful of survivors.

He wasn’t sure he would ever be able to think well of Vail, not even after everything they had learned about the reasons he had attacked his own kind. The things he had seen Vail do were branded on his mind, seared on his soul, together with the deep pain he had caused Loren. Bleu couldn’t forgive him.

“It has been a lunar cycle… so I will ask again… where have you been, Bleu?”

A month?

He could only stare at Loren as that sank in. He had thought it had been a week at most since he had left the castle, intent on returning to the last place he had seen the dragon female and seeing if he could uncover any clues that might lead him to her.

A month.

“Did your disappearance and subsequent avoidance of your home have anything to do with Vail… because he has left with Rosalind.” There was a softer note to his prince’s voice now, a soothing one that had no effect on Bleu as it dawned on him that his leaving had in part been because of Vail’s sudden appearance.

But not because he despised Loren’s brother.

He rolled his shoulder in a casual shrug, trying to let the epiphany roll off him just as easily, but failing dismally. His mood blackened again, just as it had that night a month ago when he had learned another fool had fallen under the spell of a bond.

A male no one in their right mind could love had found someone who loved him, and fuck had it stung.

“Good for him,” Bleu muttered and turned to walk away.

“Answer me, Bleu,” Loren barked and he halted, freezing to the spot and aware of the danger he was in.

Loren rarely raised his voice, especially to him. When he did, he meant business, and right now his prince was throwing off vibes that warned he was liable to break with convention and throw him in the cells if he was disobedient. It would be a first. Bleu had mouthed off to him, had behaved with little respect at times, and never had his prince punished him.

Bleu slowly turned back to face him.

“Did you stay away because of Vail?” Loren whispered, a heartfelt plea for an answer that told Bleu his prince didn’t want to punish him this time either, but people were watching them closely, and they would expect Loren to do just that if Bleu showed an ounce of disrespect.

He shook his head. “No… Vail isn’t the reason I have been away from the castle.”

It was the truth.

Well, mostly the truth. Vail wasn’t the whole reason he had left or the reason why he had been away.

He had just been the last straw.

Seeing Vail bonded to his fated female on a day that had been Loren’s wedding day to his own mate Olivia, and had brought the happily mated couples of Sable and Thorne, and Bleu’s sister Iolanthe and her mate Kyter to the elf kingdom had hit Bleu hard.

He hadn’t really thought about his actions at the time. He hadn’t really considered why he had left or what he had been feeling. He’d had a pressing need to investigate the dragon and he had left to do just that.

But an entire month had passed, and the look in Loren’s eyes told him that he had worried him, that the tone Bleu had heard in his voice and the sombre edge to his eyes had nothing to do with Vail, and everything to do with him, and that Loren wanted answers now.

Bleu had none to give to him, at least none that answered the questions in Loren’s eyes, because he didn’t want to look too closely at his reasons for leaving.

Instead, he would give his prince a safer explanation for his behaviour.

“I tracked the dragon,” he said and Loren’s expression gained a curious edge and he stepped closer to Bleu. Bleu sighed and raked his fingers over his longer hair, preening it back from his face as he tried to figure out where to begin. He knew how important the sword was to Loren, and he had sworn to retrieve it, and now he felt he was on the verge of fulfilling that promise. “I believe she has returned to her own realm for some reason. Perhaps the dragons there are hiding her, or she has gone to see someone, or she believes she will be able to conceal herself again among her own kind. I only returned to assemble a team so I might track the dragon into her own realm.”

Loren began pacing again, his head bent and the thumb of his left hand playing on his lip. His prince had never been able to keep still when thinking. It drove the council of elders mad when he silently paced back and forth in front of his throne, and that often amused Bleu no end. Anything that pissed off the council was fantastic in his opinion. They were antiquated idiots who stuck firmly to the rules and had given his prince nothing but pain and heartache for the forty-two centuries he had been at war with Vail, constantly badgering him to kill his brother.

Bleu had been all for killing Vail, but he never had been able to bring himself to do it whenever they fought. He had always faltered when dealing the killing blow, aware of the devastating pain it would cause Loren if he took Vail’s life.

Now the council were probably giving Loren hell as he attempted to convince them to allow Vail back into the elf kingdom now that he had proven he had been nothing but a pawn, a puppet controlled by a dark witch, and was maddened by the terrible things he had done.

Bleu couldn’t see them agreeing to that, and he couldn’t see his prince giving up this time either. Loren was a stubborn bastard at times, especially where those he loved were concerned.

“I have experienced fleeting sensations.” Loren glanced across at him but didn’t slow his pacing, taking long strides across the path, only needing three to reach the grass before he had to turn back around.

His prince needed a bigger space to work off some of his tension. Bleu would have offered to spar with him, but the urge to pull his team together and head into the dragon realm was growing stronger, and the thought of delaying his departure was near painful. He had to get back to the dragon realm.

He had to find her.

“They are familiar… and it took me some time, but I have realised what they are. It is the sword.” Loren huffed and his lips twisted into a grim, self-reproaching smile. “I admit that it has taken me some time to decipher the sensation… because my connection to it is not as strong as Vail’s… but it has surfaced again. Perhaps the dragon has retrieved it from wherever she hid it?”

Bleu didn’t like the sound of that. They still didn’t know why the dragon had stolen it or whether she had any ill intentions. She could easily decimate an entire demon army with it. But if that had been her agenda, why would she have waited so long to carry it out?

Why had she hidden the sword?

He wanted to believe that she viewed the sword as treasure and only treasure, but there was still a part of him that feared she meant to use it, that she had been waiting for some reason. Dragons could see the future if they were born of a strong bloodline. Had she seen something in her future and had stolen the sword because of it, and had been waiting all this time for that future to come to pass?

Loren’s hand clapped down on Bleu’s shoulder, jerking him away from thoughts of the dragon and what might lie ahead.

“Hunt the dragon. Eliminate her. Retrieve that sword for me, Bleu.”

Bleu had the feeling his prince was more aware of his innermost feelings, the ones he had tried to bury deep and ignore, than he would like and was giving him a mission to focus on in order to take his mind off things.

To give him a purpose again.

Aya has spent seventeen years living in London, immersed in the underbelly of the fae world, keeping her head down and her tail out of trouble. But when trouble walks right into her life in the form of a sinfully handsome, dangerous assassin, she is pulled into a whirlwind of events that stir up the nightmares of her past but might just give her a shot at putting those ghosts to rest—if she can resist the dark allure of a male she knows is her fated mate.

Can Harbin and Aya resist the passionate fire that blazes between them as they chase the vengeance they both crave? Or will they surrender to their deepest desires?

•••••••••

REVIEW: MARKED BY AN ASSASSIN is the eighth full-length installment in Felicity Heaton’s adult ETERNAL MATES fantasy/paranormal romance series. This is snow leopards Harbin and Aya’s storyline-a second chance for fated mates.

Told from dual third person perspectives MARKED BY AN ASSASSIN follows snow leopard and assassin Harbin as he is tasked with hunting down another snow leopard. All he knows is a possible location but he is never told who and why. What ensues is the realization that Harbin has been sent to kill the woman he hasn’t seen in over forty years-the woman he will eventually believe to be his fated mate.

MARKED BY AN ASSASSIN focuses on revenge against Archangel Industry-a group that studies, tortures and imprisons the supernatural species. Years earlier, Harbin fell for a female huntress unaware that she worked for Archangel –her betrayal destroyed all that was left of Harbin’s snow leopard pride, and in doing so Harbin not only lost his family but the woman who called to his soul. Fast forward to present day where Harbin continues to search for the huntress who betrayed him; and Aya sets into motion a plan to destroy the man who broke her heart.

The events of MARKED BY AN ASSASSIN run parallel to, and cross over with the events in the previous storyline TAKEN BY A DRAGON wherein our current storyline couple find themselves imprisoned, alongside several other supernatural species, at Archangel. Once again, the world building continues to traverse between the human realm and Hell, and a war between Archangel and the supernatural. Like most of the previous installments in the series MARKED BY AN ASSASSIN is narrative that tells a story from past to present; reveals the history between Harbin and Aya, but also what happened in the ensuing years following the attack by Archangel on the snow leopard pride. There is very little one on one communication between our leading couple, or between any of the storyline characters. MARKED BY AN ASSASSIN is as much a reflection about the past as it is about revenge in the present. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate without the over the top graphic erotic imagery.

Several of the previous storyline characters plays a secondary or supporting role especially those characters crossing over between installments including Loke and Anais (Taken by a Dragon): Harbin’s brother Cavanaugh and his mate Eloise (Craved by an Alpha) and elven Commander Bleu. Although MARKED BY AN ASSASSIN can be read as a stand alone I would suggest reading the series in order as many of the series characters play integral roles as a war between the realms,  humans and the supernatural powers continues to build.

Felicity Heaton brings together shifters and vampires; demons and witches; elves, Fae and humankind. The premise is entertaining with a number of action sequences and fight scenes; the characters are colorful and somewhat heartbreaking; the romance is fraught with sexual tension as the couple continue to push away one another. MARKED BY AN ASSASSIN is a storyline that will take you into a world of the supernatural; where betrayal is marked by revenge; where fated mates find one another amid the carnage and threat of assassination and death.

Excerpt

Aya’s back hit the wall with enough force to shake snow from the roof. It fell in a waterfall behind the male in front of her, a brief shield that gave them a flash of privacy as his mouth descended on hers. She shuddered from the fumbling clash of their lips and his taste as it flooded her senses, drawing all of her focus to him and bringing every nerve to life within her. She moaned into his mouth as he found his stride and his kiss turned passionate and demanding.

Possessive.

Her body heated, fire sweeping through her as she desperately tangled her fingers in his hair and clung to him, riding the storm of the new feelings and sensations as they bombarded her.

He groaned, the sound a sweet hit of pleasure that her body responded to against her will, arching into his. A solid wall of muscle and power greeted her, pressed against her and made her only quake for more.

His hands clamped down on her, one grasping her right hip and the other burrowing beneath her fall of silvery hair to grip the nape of her neck, holding her in place against him. She shuddered again, a fierce hot shiver that he responded to by angling his head and deepening the kiss, leaving no part of her untouched.

The voice of reason surfaced at the back of her mind, telling her that she shouldn’t be doing this, but she shoved it aside, ignoring it as she began to kiss him back, attempting to match his fervent passion.

She bravely met his tongue with hers and fought back, earning a husky growl as her reward. His grip on her tightened and she flinched as his fingertips pressed in with bruising force.

Desire instantly turned to panic. The heat of passion became a cold prickling down her spine. Her chest tightened, lungs seizing as she fought his hold but he refused to let her go.

No.

Screams rose around her, the terrified shrieks of young and old alike, and she shoved at the male’s chest, battering him and trying to break free of his hold. The man said something and only gripped her harder, his voice no longer matching the deep one that had teased her ears just moments before. She opened her eyes and stared into his cold dark eyes, seeing a different male before her. A mortal male. Fear crashed over her as the scent of blood assaulted her and the white world she loved so dearly was painted red beyond him.

No.

Aya twisted her hands free and shoved hard at his chest, sending him stumbling backwards and slipping on the icy ground. She broke right, skidding herself as her boots fought for purchase. Ahead of her, two more men in black fatigues dragged an unconscious male member of her pride across the snowy square in the centre of her village. A woman with blonde hair spilling from underneath her black skullcap followed them.

Her green eyes swung towards Aya and narrowed.

She said something and pointed towards her.

Aya’s heart leaped into her throat as she heard the man behind her getting to his feet and dodged right again, heading between the two small wooden framed buildings, clutching the pale grey stone bases that supported the black beams and plaster walls, keeping the delicate structure off the permanent snow, for support as she did her best to run. The scent of blood grew stronger and hot tears spilled down her cheeks as she ran towards the source of the smell. She had to help them.

A male twisted into her path when she reached the wider street at the end of the alley, his agonised wail cutting short as he fell to the snow. He landed face down in the white powder and she skidded to a halt beside him.

“We have to move.” She grabbed his arm and tried to pull him up, determined to help him flee the battle that had erupted in their peaceful home.

Her eyes darted around, heart pounding as she scoured her mountain village for more mortals, fearing they would catch her and the male if they didn’t move quickly. They had to escape. Her gaze shot right, towards the edge of the village and a path that would take them up the dangerous rocky peaks in the distance there. If she could gather as many of her kin as she could and guide them there, they could shift and escape the mortals.

“Come on.” She tugged at the male.

He didn’t respond so she manoeuvred him onto his back so she could grasp him by his arms and drag him to safety.

Her blood chilled and she snatched her hands back.

Dull lifeless eyes stared up at her, his pale skin splashed with crimson that soaked the ground where he had been laying.

Aya stared back at him, her skin prickling and her mind going blank.

She slowly shook her head, refusing to believe what she was seeing. It wasn’t possible.

She lifted her chin and looked in the opposite direction to the mountain path, her gaze sweeping over the madness unfolding there, struggling to make sense of what was happening. Black shadows moved everywhere, attacking her kin.

Killing her kin.

Aya’s lips flattened and then peeled back off her short fangs, all thoughts of running leaving her as she took in the pandemonium that had erupted in her peaceful home. She growled and shoved off, leaping over the dead male and heading for the second square ahead of her, where several females were attempting to fend off another group of shadowy figures. She tore at her clothes, stripping off the layers as she sprinted hard. One of the females went down as she attempted to protect a young boy. Aya snarled and her claws grew at the same time as her fangs.

She roared as she reached the end of the alley between the small houses and leaped high into the air. Pain shot through her bones as they transformed and silvery thick fur swept over her body. She came free of her clothes at the apex of her jump and growled through her teeth as she began to descend, heading straight for two males.

The click and slide of metal on metal stole her focus and she snapped her head up, her eyes settling on the third man in the clearing.

He raised his rifle and took aim.

Fired.

Aya shot up in bed, her rapid breathing and the frantic beat of her heart the only sound in the dark room. Sweat trickled down her spine and between her bare breasts as she fought for air, her wide eyes locked across the room on the wooden chest of drawers and wardrobe that lined the pale blue wall. A cool breeze caressed her left side, washing in from the small gap at the bottom of the sash window there, carrying the calming scent of the night. She breathed deep of it, struggling to settle her pounding pulse and her emotions. Her fingers tightened in the cream covers pooled in her lap, twisting them into her grip as everything crashed over her, a thousand memories she would rather not possess.

Ones she had buried deep and finally forgotten as she moved on with her life.

Until that male had walked into the club last night.

The return of her nightmares was his fault.

She hadn’t seen another snow leopard in over a decade and she had never wanted to see one again.

She had been happy living without the reminder of what she was, because now it was only a cold and dark reminder of what had happened to her. It took her back to that day when her life had been turned into a waking nightmare, everyone she had loved stripped from her as she had fought to save them all.

Aya bent forwards and ploughed her fingers through her damp black hair, pulling the jaw-length strands back. She clutched the sides of her head and tried to focus on her breathing as memories surged to the surface again. Her throat closed and her heart thundered against her ribs, a sickening rhythm that echoed in her ears together with distant screams and pleas for mercy.

She shook her head in an attempt to dislodge those memories and growled.

She wanted to forget again.

She needed to immerse herself in the tangled fae and mortal world, losing herself in it and surrounding herself with people, or she would only sink deeper into her memories, her instincts forcing her to seek out the familiar faces of her past so she would no longer feel alone. She needed to escape that past, and that meant returning to the club. It had become her sanctuary over the past few years, a place she returned to nightly to talk with the people she knew there, fulfilling the deep need to be part of a group that had been formed in her decades at the bustling pride village where she had grown up. Now, she sought crowds whenever she woke, escaping the emptiness of her apartment, hurling herself into the fray and dancing or drinking the night away.

It was a risk, because she knew the male might be there too.

A flash of silver shot across the darkness of her closed eyes. It drifted back and split, forming into two piercing orbs and a messy tuft atop them. The male. She had felt the intensity of his gaze the moment he had entered. It had sent an electric shiver through her, a bolt of awareness that had shattered everything around her, leaving only him behind. She shivered again beneath the covers, her heart beating harder for a different reason as heat swept through her as it had last night when his gaze had drifted over her, taking her in from head to toe.

He shimmered into being in her mind and she snapped her eyes open, breaking the illusion.

Aya shoved the covers off her bare legs, shifted them over the right edge of the double mattress and rose from the bed. She stretched, moaning as she arched her back. There was nothing quite as enjoyable as a good stretch when she woke up.

She lowered her arms and checked the clock on her bedside table. The numbers cast a green hue across her small bedroom, providing the only light. It was already growing late. She had managed to sleep through the day before her nightmare had begun.

Hopefully tomorrow she could do the same again without the nightmare.

She padded across the narrow span of wooden floor to the bathroom opposite her and flicked on the light, flinching as the white tiles reflected the brightness and seemingly magnified it, hurting her sensitive eyes.

Aya gave them a moment to adjust before opening them again. Her reflection in the mirror above the grey vanity greeted her. Or possibly mocked. She looked awful. Her silver-gold eyes were bloodshot, last night’s make-up smeared like black ash all around them, emphasising how tired they looked. She tugged her fingers through her messy black hair, trying to smooth the wild short strands that stuck out in all directions at jaw level. Silver threaded her hair, turning her stomach. She would need to dye it again soon. She hadn’t been able to face herself with her natural hair colour since starting her new life. It was a reminder of her past, another thorn that only tore at her and left her bleeding inside.

She had loved her silver hair once, back when life had been carefree and simple, and she had lived at the pride village.

Back when she’d had a pride.

She turned her cheek to the gaunt female in the mirror and headed towards the double shower cubicle that took up the entire right side of the room. A shower would help clear her head and set her back on track.

Aya slid the door open and stepped into the cubicle. The water was cold as she lifted the lever to start the flow, but soon warmed to her preferred temperature. She turned beneath the spray, closed her eyes and sighed as the hot water pounded down on her back. The effect was immediate, easing her muscles and washing away her bad memories. She focused on showering, using the routine to empty her mind. Once she had rinsed the conditioner out of her hair, she switched off the water, slid the door open again and grabbed a towel from the rack.

Her mind drifted as she dried off, thoughts of who would be at the club tonight keeping her occupied. She shut out any about the male and scrubbed the towel across her hair. Satisfied that she wouldn’t leave a trail of water across the pale floor tiles, she stepped out of the shower and moved to the next step of her routine.

When her hair was tamed, the fine black strands styled to lay flat on top but flick outwards and upwards at the ends in a cute way, she applied her standard black make-up around her eyes, a dash of lip-gloss, and a quick spray of perfume.

Aya padded out into the bedroom, grabbed her white strapless bra from the floor where she had tossed it last night before falling into bed, and put it on. She followed it with a matching pair of knickers from her chest of drawers at the foot of the bed and then sidestepped to her wardrobe and pulled the doors open.

Jeans.

She grabbed a pair of black ones from the pile at the bottom of the wardrobe and tugged them on. They were tighter than she remembered. She growled as she wriggled into them, muttering beneath her breath about cutting back on the sweet treats whenever she visited a coffee shop or hit the grocery store.

She had always been average, not a woman blessed with a stick-thin figure and never one to want to look that way either, but she was holding a little more winter padding than normal. Back at the pride, she had gotten away with indulging in her love of food, needing the fuel to keep her warm. Old habits died the hardest. She never had managed to shake her constant craving for food, even in the warmer weather of London.

Her silvery gaze roamed over the hangers filled with a range of camisoles, t-shirts and long-sleeved tops. The weather was cooler now, but she found herself picking a silver halter-top with a plunging neckline, one she hadn’t worn in months.

It had nothing to do with the male.

She just wanted to feel good about herself tonight and dressing to impress would certainly boost her mood. She wasn’t planning to catch his eye if he was there again tonight, definitely wasn’t interested in sending any signals to him. She planned to avoid him and catch the eye of another male.

Any other male.

Hell, maybe she would flirt with a few of them.

The attention from them would definitely make her feel fabulous.

She might even do more than flirt.

It had been a long time since she had been with a male, and she needed a little physical contact, a little craziness to blow off some steam. It might even change her outlook for the better, making her forget her worries and see some good in the world again.

Aya pulled the silver top on, tugging the triangular cups beneath her breasts and smoothing the material over her stomach. It barely reached the belt of her jeans and it would flash her belly if she raised her arms above her head, but she didn’t care.

Tonight was about feeling good and forgetting, not about worrying what others made of her figure. Their opinion didn’t matter. She was happy as she was and she refused to change herself to suit anyone’s tastes.

This was her life and she was going to live it.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 1, 2015

Cast out of Heaven and now the king of Hell, Lucifer is a powerful fallen angel warrior with a heart as cold as ice and soul as black as the bottomless pit. For millennia, he has ruled his realm with an iron fist as he plots the demise of his ancient enemies. When one of those enemies dumps an unconscious mortal female in the courtyard of his fortress and leaves her there, Lucifer finds himself entranced by the beguiling beauty and tempted beyond all reason. But is the enchanting Nina an innocent pawn in the eternal game or part of a plot against him?

Also available as part of the Dark And Damaged boxed set (June 2015)

•••••••••••

REVIEW: HER SINFUL ANGEL is the eighth installment in Felicity Heaton’s Her Angel paranormal romance series. This is the King of Hell –Lucifer- and human female Nina’s storyline. Although Her Sinful Angel is the eighth book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Some of the characters from previous storylines have secondary and supporting roles.

Told from third person point of view HER SINFUL ANGEL follows Lucifer as he unknowingly begins to fall for a human female that has been dumped in Hell’s courtyard by one of Heaven’s angels. What ensues is a building relationship between Nina and Lucifer, one both blessed and cursed by Heaven itself. Lucifer is a changed man; a changed demon who no longer destroys what is left of the souls of the angels who have fallen from Heaven, but in this ,the character of Lucifer seems to have lost some of his edge. Lucifer is not the Devil of our childhood nightmares but a man who is lonely and unaware of the empty hole in what’s left of his heart.

Nina remembers very little about the circumstances surrounding her abduction and arrival in Hell-in fact-she has no idea where she is or why anyone would want to kidnap her. Within hours of her arrival Nina finds herself falling for the man whose powers are unlike anything she has ever seen before. The entire storyline covers but 24 to 48 hours.

The relationship between Nina and Lucifer is quick to develop although Nina is unaware of Lucifer’s true identity and the power that he controls. When one of Heaven’s angels demands Nina’s return to the human realm, Lucifer becomes both guardian and protector of the woman with whom he is falling in love. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive. There is a reason Heaven has placed Nina in Lucifer’s arms.

Several of the previous storyline characters make a cameo appearance including Erin and Veiron,; Asmodeus and Liora; as Lucifer continues to battle Heaven’s angels. Heaven wants something from Lucifer but the Devil refuses to hand over what belongs to him.

Felicity Heaton continues to focus on the Fallen-the Angels who have been thrown out of Heaven and whose life will be saved by the woman who calls to his heart. Each of her storyline heroes is dark, damaged and oft times broken; the females are perfectly matched in beauty and mind. HER SINFUL ANGEL reveals that even the Devil has a little light remaining his soul and all it takes is love to break through and allow that light to shine.

Because the majority of the storyline is a written narrative, there is very little communication between our leading couple as per Felicity’s style of writing. Most of the background, history and storyline are revealed through memories, thoughts and observations.

excerpt

It had started out like any other day in his kingdom.
He had risen at seven sharp, based on Greenwich Mean Time, and had crossed the black stone floor of his expansive bedroom to his equally as impressive bathroom. There he had showered and carefully attended to his grooming. With a black towel slung low around his hips, he had ventured into his wardrobe to select one of the black tailored suits that hung from numerous rails. It had gone downhill from there. He had found the suit he had desired to wear, only to discover a crease pressed into the finely woven wool fabric. That had led to the first death of the day.The impudent fallen angel who had been responsible for ensuring his wardrobe was perfect had been sent back to Heaven. With his wings missing.
And in pieces. The last part wasn’t his fault. The idiot should have remembered to teleport before hitting the pavement of the courtyard far below the black fortress in the bottomless pit of Hell.
Of course, it might have helped if he had allowed the maggot to retain his ability to teleport.Lucifer smiled grimly to himself and flicked a speck of dust off the right sleeve of his newly-pressed suit, his golden eyes fixed on the black cragged lands beyond the window of his study.Breakfast had been a rather sober affair this morning. His attendants were on edge around him today, more than they usually were anyway. He couldn’t think why. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that they had narrowly avoided being hit by the falling angel when they had been crossing the courtyard.
A chuckle slipped from his lips as a replay of the event played across his mind.
By now, all of Hell would know he was not in a good mood.
He had planned to improve it by heading out to the distant plateau where Heaven had stationed a group of angels and use the power of his voice to see if he could sway a weak one into falling. There was a space in his ranks that needed filling, and corrupting angels always brightened the dreariest of days.
A pale orange glow lit the wall of black rock beneath the plateau, adding a dash of colour.
He despised that band of gold.
The lava river encircled his fortress and marked a boundary that by law he couldn’t cross, not until the time between his scheduled battles with Apollyon, an angel who had served Heaven for centuries before turning his back on that realm for the sake of a woman, had passed.
Lucifer hadn’t won one in centuries. He had taken several for the team without receiving any shred of gratitude in return, allowing the angel to defeat him so he would remain trapped in the bottomless pit and a band of fallen angels bent on destroying the mortal world would remain caged here with him.
Of course, it might have helped if he had informed Apollyon that he was losing on purpose, but storing up his losses and waiting for the perfect opportunity to mention to the angel what he had been doing all these millennia had been too enticing to resist.
His smile stretched a little wider.
It had been most satisfying to reveal to the angel just a few weeks ago that his hard won victories had been hollow and see the look on the bastard’s face.
The momentary flicker of pleasure that shot through his veins dimmed as he lowered his gaze back to the courtyard and it fixed on the current thorn in his side.
There was no chance of improving his mood now. It had hit rock bottom, thanks to a certain angel of Heaven.
Mihail.
When he discovered who had awoken the angel to his true purpose, restoring his memories at the same time, he would send his finest legion to Heaven to destroy them.
The angel flicked his long white hair over his shoulder but kept his icy blue eyes locked on Lucifer. The silent challenge they issued didn’t go unnoticed, but Lucifer knew better than to rise to it. Mihail couldn’t enter his fortress, thanks to powerful wards Lucifer had put in place after their last battle.
A fight that had seen almost half of Hell destroyed and turned to rubble.
Lucifer had enjoyed the millennia of peace that had come afterwards. Battling Apollyon was merely a workout for him, but fighting Mihail was a war and one that could easily claim his life. Only Mihail held the power to truly defeat him. Apollyon could only wound him.
Mihail could kill him.
Lucifer had no interest in dying and being thrust into limbo, wandering eternity as nothing more than a soul, maddened by being caged in a bleak world where he couldn’t communicate with those around him and tormented by his sins.
Not until he had settled a score with his former master and had his vengeance.
Not even then.
He never wanted to go to that dark place few angels knew existed.
Those who didn’t know of it had no fear of death, trusting they would be reborn in Heaven upon their demise, restored to their former glory, albeit without memories of their previous life.
The fools.
Lucifer knew better.
He had seen the corrupted souls of angels in the far reaches of his realm, heard their whispers on the wind and felt their suffering in his blood.
True death was possible for any angel.
He knew because he had killed one on occasion, damning them to a hellish existence.
Lucifer would damn Mihail in the same manner without even flinching if he had the chance.
The white-haired angel moved a step closer, his enormous glossy white wings shifting with the action, stark against the black pavement of the semi-circular courtyard and the obsidian armour he wore. The patches of golden skin visible between the black greaves that encased his shins, the strips of black that protected his hips, his short black breastplate and his vambraces that shielded his forearms bore tattoos now when once they had been clean and pure.
Lucifer’s smile returned.
Mostly because he felt sure that the bastard angel despised those tattoos and the one who had put them there—the fallen angel this male was linked to through duty and powers.
If Lucifer had the power, he would gift those angels who were linked to Mihail and his brethren with the ability to do more than merely change their skin by adding ink that would also appear on their counterpart. He would give them the power to amend their appearance in other ways. He wasn’t talking about haircuts and piercings.
He was talking about wounds.
Mihail spread his white wings, regaining Lucifer’s attention, but not for long. It drifted away again, his gaze roaming downwards and across the courtyard, to the prone mortal that lay like an offering on an altar between his fortress and the angel.
A woman.
Lucifer’s golden gaze narrowed on her and questions filled his mind again, ones that wouldn’t be ignored this time. Why had Mihail dumped an unconscious female in his courtyard?
Was she bait?

excerpt

EXCERPT FROM THE RESURRECTION OF SAM SLOAN by Erin Quinn

“It’s not a game, Maggie.”

She shook her head, but her gaze had fixed on his mouth and the Reaper took the chance before she changed her mind. Her lips were soft and silky. Against his, they felt like nothing he’d imagined and everything he’d imagined. There were no memories of this in Sam’s banks and he was glad for that. He wanted this experience for his own. Sensations shot through him in sharp, hot waves, a torrent of passion and lightning.

She made a soft sound of surrender in her throat, murmured something that sounds like, I’m a fool, and then her arms twined around his neck and she kissed him back.

The feel of her; the smell of her, the sweet intoxicating scent . . . All of it filled him, pushed out the vestiges of the man Sam had been, overwhelmed the foundation of the Reaper inside, and forced them both into the moment that was now. Here. Her. Him.

Maggie tugged at his shirt, pulling it free of his jeans, then took his hand, leading him up the stairs and into the bedroom she’d banned him from. The door closed behind them. She locked it.

“I want you so much that that I can hardly breathe,” he said, that hint of accent that only appeared at rare times adding a husky rasp to his voice. “I’ve been thinking about this since I opened my eyes. Since I came to life.”

There were more words he should say, feelings begging for a voice, but the swamp of emotion made speaking an impossible feat.

He took her face in his hands, kissing her like this life that he’d never expected to have depended on the breath he stole from her. She tugged at his shirt once more and he stepped back only long enough to strip it off.

Her eyes molten, her pulse beating away at her throat, she stared at his bare chest with a hunger that threatened to consume him. His hands were big and clumsy as he gently pulled her shirt over her head when he wanted to rip it off. He dropped it on the floor and simply stared at the perfection he’d unveiled. Her skin was as smooth as alabaster, flawlessly beautiful. A bra the same shade as her skin held her breasts in an embrace of lace and satin. He touched one gently, groaning at the weight, the softness. He bent his head and covered it with his mouth, sucking the hard nipple, letting the lace rasp against his tongue, acting on instinct he didn’t question.

“Take it off,” he asked, his voice so deep it throbbed against the quiet.

She arched back, hands meeting between her shoulder blades as she unfastened the bra and shrugged it off. The stretchy pants came next without him even asking. She stood before him in dainty pearlescent panties and his body went up in flames.

He’d never imagined that just looking at someone could make him feel so many things. He wanted to take; he wanted to give. He wanted to stroke, to bite, to kiss, to lick . . . to worship.

He lifted her up and turned her, laying her out on the bed so he could follow her down to the soft mattress. Her body yielded to his and the perfection in the feeling wrenched another groan from him. She was beautiful, inside and out. He kissed her deeply, trying to slow his racing his heart. Trying to experience each second, but everything came at him at once. The sensations, the passion, the desire to please her.

He had her in bed, where he’d wanted her from the start, and he needed her like he’d never needed anything before. She was gloriously naked and in his arms, where he felt she’d always belonged. But fear suddenly crept in. He’d never done this before and though he’d managed to toe the line between human and Reaper, he knew in a deep place that had been growing since the moment he’d opened his eyes, the time had come.

Reaper or human? He couldn’t be both.

One came without the heavy burden of emotion, of mortality, of humanity.

The other came with Maggie.
